Bill Still Moving Through - Studying Ahead for Beneficial Insect Results

The Jackson Rose Farm has many places and levels to feed, many types of foods and seeds.
The squirrels do not monopolize the food or tear up the bird feeder.

Mrs. Ichabod had a routine test yesterday, so I brought the beneficial insects book in to the waiting room. I used to bring in Teaming with Microbes, but I gave the printed version to a our nursery owner neighbor, at Almost Eden.

Beneficial insects are endlessly fascinating because of their relationships to other creatures and various flowers.

Rain has prevented anything except feeding the birds, which made me very popular just before the storm broke. We had Bill on radar and saw the storm slowly circling and moving toward NW Arkansas. Sassy and I took a walk and she hurried inside to beat the rain. The drizzle - more of a misty - was already falling. I went to the backyard to scatter the combination bird seed I mixed in the pail. Bird sounds increased immediately while I was putting seed in various places to let everyone have some food before the storm.

I went inside and opened the window by the bird feeder. We watched the birds feeding and listened to their sounds as they fussed, chortled, and broadcast the meal being served. The little ones favor the finch feeder while the larger ones use the platform and the window ledge. Behind them the rain was starting to fall. The backyard looked like a very large shower room with the hot water left on.

So I looked through the Jessica Walliser book to see what could be done to make our yard even friendlier to beneficial insects.

Part of my job as co-host of a radio program called The Organic Gardeners is to answer questions from callers about how to get rid of bugs. This never used to be a problem for me; I would tell the caller what organic product to spray to get rid of the perceived pest, and that would be that. But now that I am a confessed bug lover it’s a different story, and I struggle to find a balance. I want to go into a long, involved elucidation of how callers are gardening wrong and how they need to appreciate their bugs and how everything is connected, but if I did they would probably hang up on me. I hear the “just tell me what to spray” tone in their voice. So instead of giving a lecture, I tell them not to panic. Seldom does an insect actually kill a plant in a garden setting. Yes, the plant might not look so good for a while, but the chances of its survival are excellent.

I never went through that phase of giving up chemical solutions, rototillers, and finding joy in organic gardening. Instead, I trusted in the beneficial bugs from the start. I grew up with my mother capturing bugs and showing us interesting features. I read every organic gardening book I could find and went through the children's library to read those gardening and nature books too.

When my future wife and I were dating in college, we often found moths in the fridge at home, or perhaps on the curtains if the newly hatched escaped. My mother photographed them for magazines and wrote about them. She knew moths and butterflies, too.

The trouble with an urban living (compared to the farm) is having all the experiences with insects indoors, where bugs are annoying vermin. Outside, insects and the other creatures keep each other controlled, so there is a constant dynamic that is fun to watch. The insects will do some harm, but they are limited by the creatures that prey upon them.

The landscape complexity Paula Shrewsbury champions is essential to encouraging your good bugs. You don’t have to rip up every inch of lawn (but if you really want to, go right ahead), nor do you have to change everything about your existing garden. “A lot of home landscapes already have some diversity as far as trees and shrubs are concerned, but when you add more, look to diversify those plant species,” she advises. She suggests these three steps to creating a beneficials-friendly landscape: first, choose plants that thrive in your climate; second, select plants known to support natural enemies....

Beneficial insects are crazy for the tiny flowers of the carrot family.

Flowers and Weeds for Beneficial Insects 
Many common flowers and weeds are overlooked as favorite hang-outs for insects. The early blooming weeds provide initial pollen and nectar for bees and insects that prey upon pests. The pest eaters - or parasitizing egg-layers - often need nectar and pollen for themselves, if not as their main food, then at other times when fresh prey is not abundant.

I look at the low-lying, spreading weeds in the grass as early bee feeders. They are all quite attractive on their own. Other plants are simply not ready to bloom and provide harbors for the insects at the first sign of spring.

Roses were blooming and feeding bees very early, but Queen Ann's Lace and borage flowered much later.

My friends tell me the Chaste Tree, a new plant to me, is wildly popular with bees and insects.

Coreopsis - everyone has heard the name, but how many grow it?
Beneficial insects love coreopsis.

Easy to grow Coreopsis (tick-seed) is a great plant for beneficial insects.

Sunflowers are good for many insects and fun to watch grow.

Bee Balm or Horse Mint is also Oswego Tea and Beramot.
Nevertheless, insects, butterflies, and hummingbirds like it.

Bee Balm (horse mint) is a robust plant that many insects love and rumored to be a hummingbird favorite as well.

Queen Ann's Lace is one of many carrot family plants with tiny flowers for tiny insects. Not every insect can feed from every flower, and many of the best beneficial insects love this family of plants, including dill and parsley. I just bought Lace Flower, which is the genteel version of Queen Ann's Lace. Walliser impugned Queen Ann's Lace, associating it with highways and semis roaring by, so I told her I got my supply at the Lowe's empty lot, where the semis are parked. She responded favorably on Facebook.

Beneficial Birds
All birds are beneficial, especially those who never win popularity contests - crows, starlings, and grackles.

When I step into the backyard, a dozen or more birds launch into the air - every time. But often they feed a few feet from me, because I am no threat but a reliable food source.

The main benefit birds seek is a plenty of bathing space. When I opened the Community Pool for the birds, with a spare in the Wild Garden, birds were wary. Now the kiddie pool is filthy on the bottom, testimony to the crud washed off their feathers each day.

A rainstorm should bathe all the birds, right? They can perch on a limb, get a shower, shake it off and preen. But after every storm here I find birds in the street puddles, having joyous baths, even as cars drive by.

This morning the birds are interested in feeding, after using up so many calories staying warm. The platform feeder is seldom level, because the squirrels climb into it or land on it for food. The birds then feed at an absurd angle, but without complaint. Some seed gets dumped on the ground, so the ground feeders have a party in the garden.

All the birds feed from the mulch and lawn and garden. A large group of birds think of the Jackson Rose Farm as their favorite place to feed and bathe.

snag a nut from the bird feeder and depart.

We were typical suburban gardeners. Each year, at the beginning of the growing season, we carpet bombed our lawns with a mega-dose of water-soluble, high-nitrogen fertilizer and watered like crazy; then we strafed their weeds with a popular broadleaf herbicide. Next, we attacked our vegetable gardens and flower beds with a bag or two of commercial fertilizer and leveled them with a rototiller until the soil, the color and texture of finely ground coffee, lay as smooth and level as the Bonneville Salt Flats. These things we did religiously, as did most of our neighbors. Once was never enough either. We continued to use chemical fertilizers throughout the season as if we were competing in the large-vegetable contest at the Alaska State Fair— and at the end of the season we rototilled again, for some inexplicable reason. 

When necessary (and it often was), we would suit up into protective clothing— complete with rubber gloves and a face mask— and paint our birches to protect them from invading aphids by using some god-awful smelling stuff that listed ingredients no normal person could pronounce, assuming he or she took the time to read the incredibly small print on the chemical’s label. Then we sprayed our spruce trees with something that smelled even worse— something so strong, one application lasted not one but two years. It was a good thing we did protect ourselves, as both spray products are now off the market, withdrawn as health hazards.

Webber made a staggering and unbelievable claim when he described his propaganda essay as a work of historical theology. The boggy, verbose, and undisciplined effort avoided key points of history and revealed a lack of knowledge – or candor – about most of it.

The Dogma Is Older Than the Term

First we have to distinguish between the term Objective Justification and the concept. The concept arrived among Lutherans long before the term was used. Since Walther is the gold standard of doctrine for Webber and other synodical drones, it should be added that OJ is a term later adopted by Walther, blessed, by Walther, and used by his minions.

Hoenecke used General Justification, which may sound neutral, but the German word really means :”every single one” so the German term has the same force as universal. To make this redundantly clear, WELS has generally used Universal Objective Justification lately, because the sect has made a fetish of their favorite doctrine. Using Universal and Objective together is repetitive in meaning, similar to saying “a very unique” destination when unique literally means one of a kind.

But WELS has not been blessed with literate writers for a long time, so they have their UOJ and others their OJ. Sig Becker, a Missouri convert to WELS, tried to make distinctions about some of these terms, but his explanations were distinctions without a difference.

Some think Objective Justification is very much like Calvinism. Our researcher is working on a separate essay about this. Dr. Lito Cruz believes this to be true, and I would add that Calvin’s scheme is harmonious with OJ.

Calvin separated the Holy Spirit’s work from the Word and Sacraments, using the term sovereign. Because the Spirit is sovereign, He may make a sermon effective or he may not even appear. Calvin did not write this once but many times, as described by a Harvard doctoral researcher and published in his excellent book on this topic. This separation of Word and Spirit is called Enthusiasm by Luther and the Book of Concord in the overlooked Smalcald Articles, where Enthusiasm is condemned.

Notice how Calvinism is remarkably close to Walther’s “election without faith.” For Calvin, God has predestined a small percentage of all church members to eternal salvation and the rest of the world to eternal damnation. That is Calvin’s double predestination. The tiny yield is because of God’s grace, and really shows God’s grace, they claim. Mark Twain observed that a Calvinistic sermon reduced the number of saved to such a small number that it was not really worth the trouble. The Waltherians like to emphasize Grace! - disparaging the Means of Grace by thought, word, and deed. So their grace is a faux-grace, since they tear down or ignore the Instruments of Grace, the Word and Sacraments.

The rationalism of Calvin certainly infected his followers, who often live up to the slogan “Young Calvinist, Old Unitarian.” This slogan fits entire countries, the Calvinistic history of New England, and other parts of America. The greater the Calvinistic influence, the more quickly rationalism takes over.

Missouri has often been infatuated with old time Calvinists, because many Calvinists were early to use English in America (unlike Missouri) and the Calvinists seemed to be allies against Modernism.

WELS, Missouri, the Little Sect on the Prairie, and the Coveting Legalistic Cult have all cast longing eyes over the fence at other Protestant groups, the loopier the better. Fuller is their Mecca, and Willow Creek is their local haven. The first one to open the gate was Samuel Huber, and they have yet to admit this fact, quoting their Pietist leader Walther to confirm the truth of their denial.

Thunderstorm Topples Dead Tree - Big Storm To Arrive Tonight

We could use a water feature in the back yard, too.

Today I was startled to find our dead tree prostrate before the Wright Rose Garden. The tree spared the fence and all the roses.The landscaper's brother said he heard the snap at midnight.

Long ago a resident pruned the tree by cutting some branches and the main roots. Mr. Wright said the tree would die, and it did. I was pleased to have it in the yard, especially because it became a favorite roots for the birds.

Our helper also stopped by to tell me about the tree. He decided to mow just before the storm, so his daughter read a children's book about earthworms while she was waiting. Don't laugh - children's books are the best nature books. I gave it to her to take home. Her father said, "My kids love the children's Bible you gave them."

Three of us have already discussed how to use the dead limbs from the tree. I was coveting logs from the landscaper. Now I have my own, potentially, and I know he would love to carve the tree up after Tropical Storm Bill rolls through in the next 24 hours.

For this reason, all books and authorities are subordinated to the Word of God, because the Scriptures judge all books, articles, commentaries, authorities, and traditions. We call the Bible “the ruling norm” because nothing is above the Word of God, the revelation of His will.

Luther expressed this well when he preached,

"The Holy Spirit teaches man better than all the books; He teaches him to understand the Scriptures better than he can understand them from the teaching of any other; and of his own accord he does everything God wills he should, so the Law dare make no demands upon him."

Efficacy of the Word

The Word alone has the divine power of the Holy Spirit to accomplish His will.

⁸ For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the Lord.

⁹ For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts.

¹⁰ For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater:

¹¹ So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it. Isaiah 55:8-11

The Isaiah passage contains three promises:

1.    The Word will never return void, just as rain and snow always have an effect.

2.    The Word’s effect will be pleasing to God.

3.    The Word’s effect will be great, abundant, and unmistakable, even if seen otherwise – such as Paul preaching and causing a riot. (Acts 17:13)

Genesis 1 and John 1 reveal the Son of God as the Creating Word, so that nothing in the universe around us is created apart from Him. The Trinitarian Creation is defined by God as the Father’s will carried out through the Word, witnessed by the Holy Spirit, accomplished in six days.

The Word of God always has this power and never lacks in power, unless man dilutes it, distorts it, or creates an alloy made up of one part God’s Word and 99 parts man’s opinion. Thus the power of God’s Word is directly related to its purity.

False doctrine also has power to delude, harden, and blind people, but that is really derived from God’s power when His Word is rejected in favor of error.

The Means of Grace

Because the Holy Spirit only works through the Word, any claim about God’s will and work must be directly attributed to the Scriptures. Therefore, the Word of God is the Means or Instrument by which God’s grace is conveyed to people. The Gospel is the announcement of God’s promises and blessings, chiefly the righteousness of Christ and the forgiveness of sins, God’s victory over sin, death, and the devil.

Unity of Truth

Luther is still respected – and hated – today because he read the Scriptures as a unified truth, not as one particular item or another to be taught. The Lutherans of the Reformation avoided speaking of individual articles as if each one existed separately, but taught what the Word revealed as a whole. Naturally, some distinctions have to be made for man, since comprehending the entire Scriptures is an art and gift given to few men.

The Scriptures not only have divine power and efficacy – they are consistent, without error or contradictions. Luther himself used the Latin for these words in his Large Catechism, dealing with Holy Baptism – infallible and inerrant. The entire Christian Church, Roman Catholics included, taught the infallibility of the Bible until the last century or so. When rationalists began quibbling and double-talking about “infallible in doctrine but not in history and geography,” some began using the term “inerrant.” However, inerrant is simply Luther’s term, less vulnerable to degradation.

Justification in the Bible

The new experts on justification do not seem interested in justification in the Bible, unless they can use some phrases to launch into their own private speculations, fads, and ethnic traditions, some almost 200 years old. But they are allergic to this ancient figure Abraham, who is intimately connected to justification by faith throughout the Bible, Old Testament and New.

² And Abram said, Lord God, what wilt thou give me, seeing I go childless, and the steward of my house is this Eliezer of Damascus?

⁴ And, behold, the word of the Lord came unto him, saying, This shall not be thine heir; but he that shall come forth out of thine own bowels shall be thine heir.

The meaning of justification is to be counted or reckoned as righteous. God not only promised Abraham a son of his own, through Sarah, but a nation as great and numerous as the stars in the sky. We no longer see the spangled heavens the way they appear, without light pollution and interference from tall buildings. The infinity of space and the billions of stars expressed to Abraham how great this Promise was – the righteous through faith would be his heirs and fill the earth, with blessings impossible for man to number. Abraham believed this Promise and trusted in God, so he became the example of faith in the Old and New Testaments.

Romans is Paul’s great doctrinal essay, a summary of his Gospel work, inspired by the Holy Spirit. False teachers have plucked one fragment of one sentence out of Romans 4 to celebrate and emphasize their delusions. But that must be seen in context. The first three chapters destroy any possibility of justification by works, whether a religious work- righteousness or a civil works-righteousness, always contrasting this man-made righteousness of works with God’s justification by faith.

Chapter 4 is a celebration of Abraham as the example of justification by faith –

4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

² For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

³ For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

⁴ Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.

⁵ But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.

⁶ Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,

Some say, “No fair. You said Romans 4 but included Romans 5:1-2.” The chapter headings are late, man-made. There are definite thematic breaks, but that does not mean we should stop reading at the end of Romans 4 and not see the next two verses as the summary of that little essay on Abraham. Paul began with Abraham, applied this to anyone who trusts in the God who raised Jesus from the dead – who was raised for our justification. And he concludes by starting the next chapter with a two verse summary of justification by faith – the only way we receive peace, forgiveness, being reckoned as righteous in the same way as Abraham.

This Romans passage is clear so justification by faith has always been taught by traditional Protestants and Lutherans, even Lutherans in the LCMS and WELS. Naturally, one asks how Romans 4:25 by itself has been elevated to a slogan often repeated – by Webber also – even though it is a fragment of a sentence.

The Pietists misused 1 Timothy 3:16, so Romans 4:25 appealed to them as support for their abuse of “justified in the Spirit.”

And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness:

God was

·         manifest in the flesh,

·         justified in the Spirit,

·         seen of angels,

·         preached unto the Gentiles,

·         believed on in the world,

·         received up into glory. 1 Timothy 3:16

These six verbs strike most people as a well known confession of faith, and “without controversy” can be translated from the Greek – “as we all confess…” The Pietists created this strange logical cul-de-sac, as if Jesus Himself needed to be justified. They argue - since He was justified, the entire world was justified in Him, because He bore the sins of the world. That is the Easter absolution of Stephan, Walther, and all Pietists. They are blind to the previous verse, Romans 4:24, and emphasize Romans 4:25 out of context. Now they are wedded to the dogma of Halle Pietism and feverishly hope to make people forget Romans 4:24, Chemnitz, Luther – and St. Paul.

One ardent supporter of UOJ wrote, years ago, “You cannot quote Luther’s Romans Commentary. That was early in his career.”

The way in which people believe and receive forgiveness is clearly outlined in Romans 10, sometimes called the Means of Grace chapter in that epistle.

The Holy Spirit clearly teaches us through Paul that those who believe and confess the truth of Christ will be saved. We believe unto righteousness, similar to the phrasing of the Formula of Concord – the righteousness of faith.

The  Midwestern Pietists have a strange aversion to the word “faith,” which may be explained by Walther always treated faith as a work of man. Anything related to faith is a work, and to be disparaged, to emphasize grace. But that is not unique to the Midwestern Pietistic Lutherans of the Synodical Conference.

Scholarship

I do not find any Lutheran promoting UOJ who has graduate training in theology. They are seminary graduates (and not always that) who find themselves rewarded for repeating the limited knowledge of Walther, a college graduate—and Stephan, who did not bother to graduate (like Moldstadt before he became Professor of New Testament and UOJ at Bethany Seminary). If McCain, Webber, Buchholz, and others would study modern theology and read hundreds of books on this topic, they would find a striking resemblance between Walther, themselves, and the modern apostate, mainline theologians. Whether someone is a PhD from ELCA, or the Presbyterian Church, or European, the famous theologians all caution the reader against “making faith a contingency.” If faith is required, then it is no longer grace, but a work. They necessarily conclude that everyone is already saved because of God’s grace. Anything else is a denial of grace. The result in WELS, the ELS, and the corrupted echelons in Missouri is an attempt to erase faith from the Christian Faith.   

There are two kinds of scholarship. One is based on formal training and earned degrees. For better or worse, a PhD at a real university will expose the student to a wide variety of scholars, opinions, and research methods. Drive-by DMins have not claim to scholarship, because they have simply exchanged a lot of money for a chance to call themselves “Dr” when they know better.

The other scholarship is simply study, whether one earns degrees or honors. Anyone can be a scholar of the Bible. The original Greek word meant “leisure,” which mean the scholars of the day took the time to study and think about various topics. These scholars laid the foundation of Western culture, law, science, arts, and architecture. Pastors and laity can be scholars, and many of them are. They are the fifth column, the resistance against the eructations of self-destructive Waltherians. The pastors have let down their members and gone against their ordination vows for many decades.
