The Benedict Option and the Collapse of the UOJ Church Corporations

1. It is “an act of Divine Providence” that we are having this conference today, on September 11, because the sex abuse scandal is the Catholic Church’s own 9/11.
2. No churches have been destroyed (so far) by terrorists, but symbolically, US churches (“all the churches of Pennsylvania, along with the Basilica of the National Shrine of the Immaculate Conception in Washington”) have “collapsed” because of the “mortal wounds” delivered to souls by “priests of the Catholic Church.”  [The basilica cite might be a reference to Cardinal Wuerl]
When the same scandals light up the LCMS, does Holy Mother Missouri help the victims or save their money "for our missions in Russia?" Are the enablers voted out or re-elected? Ditto, WELS-ELS-CLC (sic).

To make the presence of a congregational pastor absolutely necessary for the church would, of necessity, make the congregational pastorate part of the essence of the church. But Walther maintains

In the same essay, Walther writes concerning the congregational pastorate (Pfarramt): "The Apology does not have Grabau's understanding,

August Pieper, who was Walther's student, echoed his teacher when carefully distinguishing between the necessity of the congregational pastorate for the wellbeing of the church (Pieper asserted with Walther

GJ - A reader wanted to rename Cascione's Blog of Fog WaltherQuest, but we know that Reclaiming Walther relieves all participants of reading or quoting Luther.

Roman Catholic religious used to talk about their TLC. Let's see if that fits the Missouri Synod.

  1. Triumphalism - We are the best, and others wish they was us.
  2. Legalism - We mandate what is not the Law and ignore what is the Law.
  3. Clericalism - You dare to question someone who studied Greek, a descendant of (fill in the blank) a son of the Church?
That is why LCMS clergy join Rome or mini-pope to Eastern Orthodoxy (see ELDONA for an example). LCMS clergy conclude that real TLC can only be found in the Church of Rome.

Since Walther was without actual sin, he was assumed into heaven. To be fair, many LCMS pastors are faithful and love Luther. However, they are rare in the hierarchy.

Breitbart News - Pope Calls Telling the Truth Satanic

"You, texting to the world press, be gone."

Satan, the “Great Accuser,” has been unleashed against the bishops of the Church, Pope Francis said Tuesday, in a thinly veiled reference to the former Vatican nuncio to the United States.

The former nuncio, Archbishop Carlo Maria Viganò, recently accused a number of prelates of dereliction of duty in dealing with clerical sex abuse and claimed that the pope had rehabilitated serial abuser Cardinal Theodore McCarrick, elevating him to a position of influence despite knowledge of his misdeeds.
In an 11-page testimony published on August 25, Viganò alleged that he had personally informed Pope Francis in 2013 of the serial homosexual abuse perpetrated by Cardinal McCarrick, along with sanctions imposed on his ministry by Pope Benedict XVI, and yet the pope lifted those sanctions and involved McCarrick in the naming of future bishops.
“The Great Accuser, as he himself tells God in the first chapter of the Book of Job, roams around the earth looking for someone to accuse,” Francis said in his morning homily at Mass in the chapel of the Santa Marta residence in the Vatican.
In these times “it seems that the Great Accuser has been unleashed and has it in for the bishops,” the pope said.
“It is true, we are all sinners, we bishops,” he said, but the Great Accuser “seeks to unveil sins so that they may be seen, to scandalize the people.”

With fraud which they themselves invent, thy truth they have confounded;
Their hearts are not with one consent on Thy pure doctrine grounded.

Despite the pope’s frequent calls for transparency and accountability for those responsible for committing or covering up sex abuse, he seemed to suggest Tuesday that the former nuncio had behaved like Satan by making public the errors of his brother bishops.
When asked about these allegations shortly after their publication, Pope Francis dodged questions from reporters, telling them to read the accusations and make their own assessment of their credibility.
On the papal plane returning from Ireland in late August, a journalist asked the pope if it were true that the papal nuncio had explicitly informed him in 2013 of sexual abuse perpetrated by Cardinal McCarrick and subsequent sanctions imposed on him by Pope Benedict XVI.

Pope Francis acknowledged having read the statement but refused to confirm or deny the allegations. “I won’t say a word about this,” he said.
Since then, a number of bishops have criticized the pope’s “no comment” media strategy, insisting the allegations are very serious and that Francis has the duty to clarify the facts to provide the “accountability” for which he himself has called.
Certain news reports from early in the Francis pontificate would seem to lend credence to charges that the pope gave McCarrick a new lease on life shortly after his election.
In a 2014 article in the Washington Post, journalist David Gibson said that McCarrick was “one of a number of senior churchmen who were more or less put out to pasture during the eight-year pontificate of Benedict XVI.”
“But now Francis is pope, and prelates like Cardinal Walter Kasper (another old friend of McCarrick’s) and McCarrick himself are back in the mix, and busier than ever,” Gibson wrote.
“Francis, who has put the Vatican back on the geopolitical stage, knows that when he needs a savvy back channel operator he can turn to McCarrick,” he said.

If You Want To Know about Halle Pietism, Start with This Link

Spener worked hard at establishing Pietism, and Francke
created world-wide networks through his Halle institutions.

Here is the previous Halle Pietism link.

I will add this link to the previous Halle Pietism post. https://www.francke-halle.de/luther2017englisch-a-7762.html

In 1705, the SPCK published the English translation of Francke’s most important prospectus under the title "Pietas Hallensis" and supported the dissemination of Halle Pietism in the British colonies in North America and India. Halle missionaries were active in Tranquebar, Southern India as of 1706. Based on Francke’s model, they founded social institutions and schools there, including the first school for girls on the Indian subcontinent. Letterpress printing was established on Indian soil from here with a complete printing house staffed by personnel from Halle.
Francke became interested in North America at an early stage and corresponded with the Puritan Cotton Mather (1663-1728) in New England. Salzburg Lutherans under the leadership of Halle pastors later settled in the colony of Georgia. Henry Melchior Muhlenberg (1711-1787), who was sent from Halle, became patriarch of the Lutheran Church in North America from 1742.

The Halle Pietists maintained close contacts with the Protestant nobility in southern Germany, Thuringia, Saxony, Brandenburg and the Harz region. The princes and counts in these regions were frequently under the direct authority of the emperor and therefore, in accordance with the Peace of Augsburg, retained religious sovereignty in their lands. Many of these nobles were influenced by Pietism and brought Francke’s students to their territory as officials or pastors, who then improved local administration as well as the welfare and school system. In this way, the Pietist reform ideas influenced entire dominions.

Francke strongly supported the Protestant nobility in Silesia in their denominational disputes with the Catholic sovereigns, the Habsburgs. A "Privy Council" comprised of numerous central German nobles supported Francke in the course of these disputes.
Like many other nobles, Henriette Catharina von Gersdorff (1648-1726) had her grandson, Imperial Count Nikolaus Ludwig von Zinzendorf (1700-1760) educated at Francke’s Royal Paedagogium. Count Nikolaus then emerged as founder of the Moravian Church and shaped his own version of Pietism.

Und ve go von Zinzendorf zu Martin Stephan und das Dr. CFW Walther. Ja, Stephan had a church devoted to Pietism, built on land given by Zinzendorf.

One Can Only Laugh at the Church Growth Cover-Up Artists Sticking Up Their Noses at the Church Growth Cover-Up Artists in WELS and the ELS

CLC (sic) Missionary and Church Growth Fiend had to be told to cool it with the notorious Horst Gutsche, no longer available to prey upon kids. Gutsche is with his Father Below. No problem for the CLC (sic). Koenig's only problem was - "Who gave Ichabod the photo?"
You did, Dave. It was posted on Facebook

Their seminary enrollment is way ahead of ELDONA (zero) and not far behind the ELS and WELS.

Here are the 2018 convention proceedings. I direct your attention to the ecumenical discussions with the Little Sect on the Prairie and the Wisconsin Sect.

Short version - over Dan Fleischer's dead body will the CLC (sic) ever forgive WELS for being mean to little Danny at Northwestern College. The seething anger is a hoot, given Dan's ability to overlook anything consequential. False doctrine? No problem. Gutsche and Koenig? Koenig and Tiefel?

The only thing dividing them is Donkey Basketball. The ELS and WELS do not support their institutions with DB. The three dying sects agree about UOJ and Fuller CGM, now called Missional.

The CLC (sic) published this photo and promoted this unique and motivational fund-raising activity.
Instead of "Drain the swamp!" they shout "Wash the floor!"

How Was Lutheran Doctrine Preserved?

From Henry Sieck:

Of the early Christians at Jerusalem we read that they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine, and the apostles themselves spoke not as of themselves, but preached and propagated the doctrine committed to them by their Lord and confirmed to them by the Spirit whom He had sent from the Father. Thus did they, preachers and hearers, bear the first and foremost token of true discipleship, according to their Master's word. If ye continue in my Word, then are ye my disciples indeed. Again, when Antichrist set up his throne in the church, the chief abominations in holy places were the false doctrines whereby the souls of men, instead of being made free by the truth of the gospel, were fettered and held in bondage and the thralldom of a worse than Babylonian captivity.  And when, in the days of the Reformation, the bulwarks of Satan were laid low and Israel was set free, this wondrous work of God was performed by the restoration of the doctrine of Christ to the preachers and hearers of Christendom.

Alas, then came a time when this kindly light of saving truth was again obscured, when rationalism was enthroned in the pulpits of what went under the name, but no longer fought under the standards, of the Lutheran church. It was then chiefly in the old books handed down from better days and read and reread at the firesides of humble people, whose libraries consisted of the Bible, the Hymnbook, the Catechism, and the family postils, that the pure doctrine of the grace of God in Christ Jesus was still the bread of life which nourished immortal souls unto life everlasting. God bless those old postils and those who read them, the old German postils, of which there are thousands also in this country, where they have contributed and still contribute not a little toward keeping preachers and hearers steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine. For though by the goodness and mercy of God the Lutheran church is no longer an unknown quantity in America, and its light of pure doctrine is not hidden under a bushel, but shines throughout the land from coast to coast, and to far distant shores beyond the seas, it must not be forgotten that this light of pure Scripture doctrine came to the restorers of sound Lutheranism in America largely through the quarto and folio volumes of the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries and was to a considerable extent exhibited and communicated to hearers and readers directly from these sources. Nor are the days of their usefulness now at an end. May their blessings never cease.  (emphasis added)
Amen!

Half of them, perhaps, illlustrated?

"Imitation is the sincerest form of flattery."

Paul McCain's pals just attacked me on LutherQuest (sic) for publishing Luther instead of venerating Walther and Stephan.

I am pleased the LCMS is publishing an edition of Luther's sermons. They are far too expensive but so pretty on a pastor's bookshelves. That ninny who raves about everyone being saved. "Everyone! Everyone!" He has a massive set of bookshelves. The question is - will these sermons be read and heeded? Let us hope so.

We are providing the entire Lenker set (BW) plus the Gems in color for $70 delivered. That means 9 volumes, author's price, taxes and shipping.

Our limo is a 94 Lincoln Town Car, so we kee overhead low.
CPH customers are supporting massive CPH salaries.

"But what about the House Postils?" We have started the House Postils, which Norma A. Boeckler will illustrate.

We are working on everything being offered in Kindle at the lowest price, and there will be free PDFs of our books offered for anyone to own and to share.

We offer Luther's Sermons so everyone can read and enjoy them, in BW, color, Kindle, and soon - PDFs.

Want Butterflies? Grow Their Favorite Flowers and Vegetation.
Concentrate the Attractions

I tried to move a Chaste Tree to the front yard, without getting the soil moist enough for a gentle digging. Memo to self - Chaste Trees get very attached to their original locations.

I learned my lesson and soaked the Clethra and its new location. Digging it up with a soil ball and installing it in the rose garden went fast. I did that with help and also discovered the second Clethra, which proved "Out of sight, out of mind." It became a part of a solid wall of green in the bird feeding area.

Clethra is also called Summersweet. Tapping the flower will yield a bunch of tiny insects, which like tiny flowers. Butterflies seem to favor those small flowers which people would never grow for a bouquet, so they are treated to a variety of butterfly displays instead.

I repeated the Clethra move this morning, after soaking it last night in buckets of rainwater. I moved the this one into the wheelbarrow easily, with a rootball, and found a good place among the roses for it. If I want a plant to prosper, I put it where I will see it all the time. The rose garden never lacks color, whether from mints, Crepe Myrtle, Joe Pye, daisies, hostas, or the milkweed family.

I am catching onto butterfly gardening. The Butterfly Weed bloomed and formed Milkweed like pods for the seeds. One opened up today and the seeds headed off on the breeze.

Since Clethra is known for its attraction to butterflies, I decided to move it where it would thrive with more sun and with Joe Pye blooming nearby.

I have bags of Stinky Peat in the limo trunk, so I pulled out a couple of bags and dumped them on top of the Clethra base and on the Chaste Tree's final resting place. Peat Compost is only $1.60 a bag and remains my favorite for planting. If the project does not work out, I have improved the soil in that spot.

Bumble Bees adore the Chaste Tree. The oil is sold on the herbal market. The leaves have a definite medicinal aroma.

God has a plan for every living thing. That is clear from moving a few things around and planting some new, unual flowers and shrubs I never head about before. Creation Gardeners know how little they do for the garden. The schedules are already set up for blooming, reproduction, support of butterflies and birds.

Every gardener has an enemies list of destructive bugs. Mine is short - Japanese beetles and aphids. This year I saw little of both, because the good creatures kept them down and Milky Spore got to the grubs before they romanced, chewed, and reproduced in the roses.

My Facebook friend found tetanus in her soil in the microbiology lab. I replied, "But there are also antiobiotics in the soil. Otherwise death in the soil would poison us all."

Even false teachers have their purpose. They show that figs do not grow on thistles, or grapes on thorns. They make the difference between sound and toxic doctrine clear, if only we pay attention to the Word of God.

My father, born in 1910, would say, "You have to buy milkweeds now?" I would say, "For the Monarchs, yes."

From Your Self-Appointed Lutheran Vatican Observer - McCarrick's Successor as Cardinal

Cardinal McCarrick is being protected because he is a "son of the Church."

Cardinal Donald Wuerl followed the notorious McCarrick. The system produces protectors of that system. For examples, see WELS, LCMS, ELS, CLC (sic).
Read the complete article at the American Spectator website here.

But let’s get to the specific reason why Wuerl would resort to such crass clericalism: I am gradually smoking out his corruption, breaking a series of stories that have caused his face to turn as red as his robes.
Those stories include: that he lives in a palatial, multi-million-dollar penthouse on Embassy Row; that he employed a “personal chef” who would spend twelve hours a day at his opulent pad (according to an informed source in the neighborhood) and park his flashy White Mercedes not in the employee parking lot but in the cardinal’s personal garage (the archdiocese declined to state his employment status to me; I was told he mysteriously disappeared after my reporting on his putative culinary services for the razor-thin Wuerl); that Wuerl is sheltering his child rapist-predecessor, Theodore McCarrick, at a $2.3 million, archdiocesan-owned mansion on the edge of American University Law School, just blocks from a children’s academy (McCarrick’s assigned babysitter is Mario Dorisonville, one of Wuerl’s auxiliary bishops); that Wuerl is using tens of thousands of dollars of the faithful’s money to provide McCarrick with 24/7 protection; that Wuerl has hired Barack Obama’s disgraced director of the Secret Service, Mark Sullivan, to oversee his security; that Wuerl, according to a chancery-connected source, is furtively building a costly retirement pad for himself at John Paul II Seminary (Wuerl was so upset about this disclosure that he had three police cars and a security goon search for me on the seminary grounds one night, according to a well-placed source).
But perhaps the story I broke about which he feels the most sensitive regards his protection of a priest I will call Fr. Hot Tub: Emmanuel Betasso, a Discalced Carmelite holding retreats and providing “spiritual” counseling in Wuerl’s archdiocese who was arrested in 2011 for groping an 18-year-old male in Wisconsin.

Some Areas To Study for Those Who Do Not Know the Influence of Halle Pietism on American Lutherans

Spener inspired the creation of Halle University, a Biblical Pietism that rejected the Confessions and clearly borrowed from Calvinism. A link to even more about Pietism can be found here.
As a student, Muhlenberg came under the influence of the Pietist movement through fellow students from Einbeck who had worked at the Francke Foundations in Halle (Saale), an important Pietist institution. With two other men, Muhlenberg started a charity school in Göttingen that eventually became an orphanage.[1]

  2. Muhlenberg, the founder of the LCA, and
  3. Adolph Hoenecke, the dogmatician of WELS

The University of Halle (Universität Halle) was founded in 1694 by Frederick III, Elector of Brandenburg, who became Frederick IKing in Prussia, in 1701.
In the late 17th century and early 18th century, Halle became a centre for Pietism within Prussia.

Leucorea Foundation, Wittenberg.

University of Halle in 1836.
In the 17th and 18th centuries, the universities were centers of the German EnlightenmentChristian Wolff was an important proponent of rationalism. He influenced many German scholars, such as Immanuel KantChristian Thomasius was at the same time the first philosopher in Germany to hold his lectures not in Latin, but German. He contributed to a rational programme in philosophy but also tried to establish a more common-sense point of view, which was aimed against the unquestioned superiority of aristocracy and theology.
The institutionalisation of the local language (German) as the language of instruction, the prioritisation of rationalism over religious orthodoxy, new modes of teaching, and the ceding of control over their work to the professors themselves, were among various innovations which characterised the University of Halle, and have led to its being referred to as the first "modern" university, whose liberalism was adopted by the University of Göttingen about a generation later, and subsequently by other German and then most North American universities.[3]

Biblical criticism began as an aspect of the rise of modern culture in the West. Some scholars claim that its roots reach back to the Reformation, but most agree it grew out of the German Enlightenment. German pietismplayed a role in its development, as did British deism, with its greatest influences being rationalism and Protestant scholarship. The Enlightenment age and its skepticism of biblical and ecclesiastical authority ignited questions concerning the historical basis for the man Jesus separately from traditional theological views concerning him. This "quest" for the Jesus of history began in biblical criticism's earliest stages, reappeared in the nineteenth century, and again in the twentieth, remaining a major occupation of biblical criticism, on and off, for over 200 years.

Born in Breslau in the Prussian Silesia as the grandson of Daniel Schleiermacher, a pastor at one time associated with the Zionites,[12][13] and the son of Gottlieb Schleiermacher, a Reformed Church chaplain in the Prussian army, Schleiermacher started his formal education in a Moravian school at Niesky in Upper Lusatia, and at Barby near Magdeburg. However, pietistic Moravian theology failed to satisfy his increasing doubts, and his father reluctantly gave him permission to enter the University of Halle, which had already abandoned pietism and adopted the rationalist spirit of Christian Wolff and Johann Salomo Semler.

Schleiermacher's Professorship[edit]

In 1804, Schleiermacher moved as university preacher and professor of theology to the University of Halle, where he remained until 1807, quickly obtaining a reputation as professor and preacher; he exercised a powerful influence in spite of contradictory charges which accused him of atheism, Spinozism and pietism. In this period, he began his lectures on hermeneutics (1805–1833) and he also wrote his dialogue the Weihnachtsfeier (Christmas Eve: Dialogue on the Incarnation, 1806), which represents a midway point between his Speeches and his great dogmatic work, Der christliche Glaube (The Christian Faith); the speeches represent phases of his growing appreciation of Christianity as well as the conflicting elements of the theology of the period. After the Battle of Jena he returned to Berlin (1807), was soon appointed pastor of the Trinity Church, and on May 18, 1809 he married Henriette von Willich (née von Mühlenfels) (1788–1840), the widow of his friend Johann Ehrenfried Theodor von Willich (1777–1807).
At the foundation of the University of Berlin (1810), in which he took a prominent part, Schleiermacher obtained a theological chair, and soon became secretary to the Prussian Academy of Sciences. He took a prominent part in the reorganization of the Prussian church, and became the most powerful advocate of the union of the Lutheran and Reformed divisions of German Protestantism, paving the way for the Prussian Union of Churches (1817).

Rambach was born in Halle and a true Pietist. "In 1723 he was appointed adjunct of the Theological Faculty at Halle, as also inspector of the Orphanage; in 1726 extraordinary professor of theology; and in 1727, after A. H. Francke's death, ordinary professor as well as preacher at the Schulkirche." Hymnary.org

Biblical Criticism - Halle Professors on the List

The Higher Critics: An Annotated Chronology, 1710-1917

Ray Dyer, PhD

1710. Halle, Germany. A Bible group begins distribution of low-cost Bibles to the poor (1804). University of Halle founded as Lutheran foundation 1694, “the first modern university”. Had renounced religious orthodoxy in favour of objective-rational science and investigation. Canonical texts were replaced by systematic lectures, and German replaced Latin as language of instruction.

1752. Semler (1775) becomes Professor of Theology at Halle (1710).

1776. Johan Jakob Griesbach (1745-1812), Professor first at Halle and then at Jena 1775, was first to challenge “Received Text” of Gospels (1831 Lachmann). He coined the term “synoptic” for the first three gospels. Epochal textual critic. Synopsis of the Gospels of Matthew, Mark and Luke, 1774-76. The “Griesbach hypothesis,” gave priority to Matthew, was accepted by Strauss, Baur, and many other scholars through early Victorian years (1832). Cf. “Marcan hypothesis” (1831 ibid) (1838 1850). QHJ: Chap. X.

Scheiermacher taught Objective Justification alone - he was a Universalist.

1799. Friedrich Schleirmacher (1768-1834). the “Father of Modern Theology,” emphasized historical examination of the origins of Christianity. He taught at Halle until 1806 during the Napoleonic Wars, at which point the liberal torch passed to Gottingen. He held the position of Professor of Theology at Berlin from 1810. He addressed Speeches on Religion to its “cultured despisers”. He was the first to lecture on “The Life of Jesus” beginning in 1819 . He employed rational methods in the service of theological aims (sic).
August Tholuck - He is quoted as avocating Universalism.

1837. August Tholuck (1799-1877), Professor of Theology at Halle (1826-77), was an exponent of "mediating theology" and an early critic of Strauss, appealing to Animal Magnetism as mediating means to preserving belief in supernaturalism and miracles, as would Hase by 1876 and perhaps Nippold later. GJ - Tholuck was Adolph Hoenecke's mentor at Halle.

1857. C.K.J. "Chevalier" Bunsen (1791-1860) employed the Universal History of Egypt. Part V as his basis for challenging the "short chronology" of the Bible (Bibelwerke fur die Gemeinde (Bible Works for the Municipality), Vol. IX, Das Leben Jesu (The Life of Jesus), edited by the authoritative H. J. Holtzmann.

1884. Friedrich Emil Kautzsch (1841-1910) was Lecturer at Leipzig from 1869 and from 1872 Professor of Theology at Basle, where he knew Nietzsche. He also taught at Tubingen from 1880 and Halle from 1888. Kautzsch was a textual and linguistic specialist in Grammars of Biblical Aramaic. Grammatik des Biblisch-Aramaisch. He was a founder member of the German Society for Exploration of Palestine, and editor of Theologische Studien und Kritiker, 1888- . Cf. Dalman.

1885. Willibald J.H. Beyschlag (1823-1900), Professor of New Testament Exegesis at Halle from 1860m was the liberal-Protestant author of Das Leben Jesu (The Life of Jesus), 2 vols. (1885-86). The excellently arranged preliminary study and scholarly apparatus of the first volume is then followed by a disencumbered life in the second. Beyschlag insists on merging the Synoptics and John, and on retaining the eschatology with the spiritual, against Volkmar. Many inconsistencies are thereby noted by Schweitzer. Beyschlag attempts to resolve the problems by postulating three stages in the development of Jesus: (1) Preacher of a future and supernatural Kingdom. (2) Growing belief that the Kingdom was then presenting itself, as seen in the changes brought about in the people who flocked to Him in the middle part of the Public Life. (3) As failure began to mark the scene, thought shifted to "beyond the grave" and a "glorious return" (QHJ: 215-16).

1892. M. Kahler (1835-1912), Professor of Theology at Halle from 1862, who opposed liberal life of Jesus studies, was a proponent of the "Faith versus History" debate. In The So-Called Historical Jesus and the Historical Biblical Christ (2nd ed. 1896; English translation 1964 he argued that Christianity was only interested in the latter - "The real Christ is the preached Christ" - foreshadowing the theology of Karl Barth and R. Bultmann in the 1920s, and modern studies of the Apostle Paul, the Kerygmatic Christ, and the beginning of a "New Quest".

Let's Not Forget the Halle Professor Who Inspired the OJ/SJ Explanation by His Calvinist Translator

Some consider Barth the ultimate non-confessional Pietist, though he claimed to loathe Pietism.
