We have two portraits of repentance here. One is true repentance based upon God’s mercy. The other is phony repentance, based on making a show for people to see.

Phony repentance is quite popular, fun to view and attractive to the Old Adam. In one movie a man dragged around a heavy burden as he climbed up a mountain with everyone else. He was paying for his recent sin. Suddenly he let them all go crashing downward, because he felt forgiven. That is a pathetic picture of worldly contrition, as Walther calls it, putting on a big show, its foundation coming from a false view of God.

The Roman Catholic Church and all false views of sanctification depend on this idea of man paying for his sins (but never enough) and redeeming himself with good works. Nothing seems quite so attractive and knowing that someone can pay for his sin immediately afterwards. As customers used the say at my father’s doughnut shop, “The doctor says I should not be eating this.”

Doing, paying, and earning all detract from the glory of God.

Godly repentance has two parts. The first is Godly contrition, true sorrow for sin related to violating God’s Word. The Ten Commandments cover all possible sins, so we should always be suspicious when new commandments are invented and enforced instead of the original Ten Commandments.
Godly contrition is depends upon the Gospel, because repentance is not “feeling sorry” but contrition and faith in the Promises of God.

Our Old Adam wants us to think we feel sorry enough and express that with enough energy, the debt is paid. Knowledge of sin against the Word is good, and that is a useful, practical step. That knowledge comes from the work of the Holy Spirit, not from us.

But the true remedy for sin can never be the Law and Godly contrition alone. That stops with the diagnosis of the illness, lacking the treatment and the healing.

The Gospel portion is the most important and the only solution. Only through the Gospel can we find forgiveness and strengthening against temptation.

The Holy Spirit convicts us of sin (John 16), because we do not utterly trust in our Savior. That is quite different from the normal conception of sin and forgiveness, because the typical view is Old Adam’s: “I have done something wrong, so I feel terrible. Now I must do something to make up for it.”

That attitude obliterates the work of Christ in dying on the cross for our sins. Even worse, that attitude overshadows and supplants the Biblical teaching of justification by faith. Believing in Christ alone is forgiveness.

That trust comes from the Promises of God being preached and taught. That Word-created faith embraces and treasures the forgiveness promised.

In all kinds of relationships, forgiveness is essential. Without that, no relationship can last. Peace of mind comes from forgiveness, the peace God bestows because God is the true cause and the guarantor of forgiveness.

We know we are forgiven of our sins because of the objective truth of the Gospel conveyed to us by the Word. That means:
1. Forgiveness is not based on how sorry we are. Sorrow does not earn forgiveness. Christ has already atoned for our sins.
2. What we do to deserve forgiveness. Christ has done that.
3. Promises we make, since God keeps His and we do not keep ours.

Forgiveness comes from the power of the Gospel, which does even more than take away sin, so that it is forgiven and forgotten by God.

The Gospel heals us because it is God’s divine medicine for strengthening our souls. The many examples of physical healing and raising three people from the dead are metaphors for what the Gospel does for us. We taken from being dead in Christ, unable to do anything to help ourselves, to being restored, given new life, and strengthened.

The Gospel strengthens us against temptation. The Law can make us feel the weight of sin and its condemnation, but it cannot heal and cannot strengthen us. Yet both work together, Law and Gospel, because we need both.

A Final Word from the Moderator

Now that the Church and Change organization has come to an end, this discussion group will also end – in fact, the discussion group will cease to exist following this email.

Over my term as the moderator for this group, I have delighted in reading of the high regard members of our denomination have for God’s inspired and errorless Word, not to mention the grace in Jesus that the Bible proclaims. I am grateful for the iron sharpening iron exchanges that have gone on here. I have been encouraged by the sensitivity for others that some have shown in their posts. I have thanked the Spirit for the Christ-like love that has spilled out in our emails. I have rejoiced in solid ministry ideas shared, sincere questions asked, and faith in our Savior confessed.

We did struggle, however, with maintaining a helpful tenor in some of our discussion. We didn’t always listen well or completely. We didn’t always respond with respect.

The posts to our discussion group have highlighted areas of tension that exist in our denomination at present. Tensions that we who love Jesus, his Word, and his people will want to continue to work to resolve. But resolution of those issues requires careful communication – not to mention Scripture study and prayer.

Seminary Professor John Brug recently commented in his introduction to the articles in volume 108 of the Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly that, even though it is true that "love cannot exist where truth is absent," it is also true that "truth cannot survive where love is absent." I’ve attached the initial paragraphs of Professor Brug’s article . I found them important for myself. They are a call to repentance for my own failures to stand in loving support of my synodical brothers and sisters – especially when it seems we are not on the same page. Perhaps you will also find Professor Brug’s words of value.

Philippians 1:3-6, 9-11 seems an appropriate benediction and prayer with which to bring our discussion group to an end: “I thank my God every time I remember you. In all my prayers for all of you, I always pray with joy because of your partnership in the gospel from the first day until now, being confident of this, that he who began a good work in you will carry it on to completion until the day of Christ Jesus.... And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to discern what is best and may be pure and blameless until the day of Christ, filled with the fruit of righteousness that comes through Jesus Christ—to the glory and praise of God.”

Where There Is No Love, Doctrine Cannot Remain Pure

There has been a lot of debate within the church about the right relationship between doctrine and love. Some claim that the church should elevate love over doctrine. Doctrine is blamed for dividing the church. Love, some say, should overlook doctrinal differences for the sake of peace. This claim, however, cannot be harmonized with the scriptural teaching that truth and love must be inseparable partners. Real love can never be present wherever God's truth is ignored or set aside. Real love is not possible without the truth. No departure from God's Word can ever be labeled love, because every departure from the Word harms souls. Real love, on the other hand, never harms but always heals. "Love cannot exist where truth is absent." This is an important scriptural truth.



But in this article we are interested in examining the opposite truth: "Truth cannot survive where love is absent." Luther was vehement in his assertion that he could tolerate no "love" which compromised the truth (AE 27:38, 41), but in a sermon on John 15:9 he stated also the corresponding truth, "Where there is no love, doctrine cannot remain pure" (AE 24:244).

Holding truth and love together is a struggle. We must make every effort to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace because Satan is always working hard to tear that unity to pieces. Love is a bond which keeps a communion from being torn apart (Col 3:14). Love covers a multitude of sins (1 Pe 4:8). When the unity of a communion is torn either by error or by arrogance, love is the bond that mends the tear before it rends the whole garment.



We can't prevent offense from being given and taken in the church. Luther said we can avoid offending each other as little as we can keep one toe from touching another. Sinners constantly rub each other the wrong way. Someone offends you. You do the same to him. Even the mission team of Paul and Barnabas was split by personal offenses and disagreement. Church history is littered with such sad stories.



Sometimes these offenses are caused by significant personal trivia. I am offended because someone has not given me enough praise. He is offended because he did not recognize how constructive my criticism of him really was. I have gotten some honor or position that he wanted, or vice versa. Our group accepted his proposal not mine. Such personal slights lead us to focus a more critical eye on the brother who offended us. One thing leads to another, and personal faults and theological misstatements are magnified. One brother takes a stand on an issue, and the other immediately knows, without much thought or reflection, that his stand should be the opposite. Sparks become fires, molehills become mountains, and through the magnifying glass of jealousy specks of sawdust look like beams.



We can't avoid giving and taking such offense, but we can reconcile and be reconciled. Love, which is biblically defined as doing what is good for the brother and for the church, heals little nicks before they become large wounds on the body. Love covers over such sins not by ignoring them but by healing them.



But what if the offense is real not imagined, and the offense is against God's Word? Certainly love does not cover over such sins, does it? "Love must confront error with the truth!" That is true. The medicine of correction must be applied to every ill, but a spoonful of love helps the medicine go down. Love remembers that our first goal is to win the brother, not just to win the argument. Love understands that how correction is applied sometimes has more impact on the outcome than whether the rebuke is true or false. "Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres" (1 Cor 13). This passage provides a good checklist for us to use when we are evaluating how we have responded to an offense against us.



What are some of the ways in which a lack of love endangers the preservation of the truth? They fall into the general categories of too harsh and too hasty.



Damage is done to the body of Christ when the method of correction is more destructive than the offense itself. A person who uses a cannon on every fly that goes through his house has no flies. But he soon has no house either. Not every misstep or misstatement leads to formal discipline Be calm and talk to the brother. Don't press too hard.



Don't press too fast. Work through the problem with the brother, giving him time to study and reflect. Don't involve others prematurely. It is for good reason that Jesus instructs us that the first step should be to talk to the brothers alone. Love does not hastily and prematurely involve others. Is an offense serious enough to sound the alarm at once or can it be handled quietly and privately? When people are asked to take sides and are polarized prematurely, a whole synod can be divided into armed camps. A little flame in a pile of leaves becomes a forest fire.



Pastors, don't nitpick on your people (or on your brother pastors). People, don't nitpick on your pastor.



Avoid word battles. Gerhard warned, "It is wicked to interpret a poor choice of words as error when you know that the right meaning was intended" (Good works, 38).



Instruct gently, with kindness and patience. The goal is to win the person (2 Tim 2:23-26).



Lack of love can break unity by being too harsh in the way we begin discipline, but we can also cause and maintain division by the way we finish discipline. Public doctrinal error which has endangered or offended others must in some way be set right with those who may have been affected by the error, but pressing for apologies or confessions of error, doubting the brother's sincerity or repentance unnecessarily, may prolong the division in the heart long after the statements have been clarified or corrected.



We are warned to watch our life and our doctrine carefully (1 Tim 4:16). In the context of this article "watching our life" applies to the way in which we deal with offense. It is important that we not only have the right doctrine but also the right motive, manner, and attitude in the way we correct offenses. We need to practice Christian love and forgiveness as we bear with the sins and endure the faults and shortcomings of others. In this way unity is preserved in the church, so that the family of Christ is not torn apart and disrupted. Divisions must sometimes come in order to preserve the truth, but we should take care that they are necessary, unavoidable divisions for the sake of the truth, not schisms caused by personal offense or loveless correction.



"As important as it is to be concerned about purity of doctrine, we dare not become irrational about it." This statement, which served as the springboard for this article, was made by C. F. W. Walther in his "Duties of an Evangelical Lutheran Synod" (Harrison edition, p 321). Certainly, no one could accuse Walther of being lax in his concern for doctrinal purity, but because he was as evangelical as he was, he also gave close attention to the opposite concern: Where there is no love, the doctrine cannot remain pure.

Love! Who has spent more time being divisive than Church and Change? Who has vilified more people than their leaders? Who has grabbed all the loot available for themselves?

The apostles of love need a heartfelt confession of sin, not another display of posturing.

We invite you to celebrate with us!  It was more than fifteen years ago that the first weed seeds were sown for Church and Change.  Satan put it into the hearts of the Church and Change pioneers to find new approaches for setting aside the efficacious gospel of Jesus Christ with our communities and world. Church and Change brought together many WELS false teachers; people passionate about undermining sound doctrine and multiplying the lost and to better serve ourselves with grants and synod subsidies . Church and Change also helped the WELS stay market-focused as Fuller-trained leaders made the compelling case for Antinomianism.  It is our revenge that Christian freedom will continue to be an excuse for our Lutheran follies as we foist our beliefs on the innocent.

Many were disgusted and depressed over the years through Church and Change. Ministry leaders improved and expanded their egos and networked with other false teachers leaders across the country, in many denominations.  Those leaders who became part of Church and Change learned new approaches and methods to reach out and are now teaching and misleading others to do the same.  The goals of Church and Change have been achieved: WELS is doomed.

So, it’s time for Church and Change to make a change of its own. It’s time to let other zombies take the lead.  As of today, Church and Change has finished its run. We are confident that the “spirit of apostasy” will continue. We believe that Our Father Below, who called us to share his doctrine with as many as possible and in as many different ways, will continue to lead us.  We pray that Old Scratch will give you strength and wisdom to march downward!  It has been a privilege to get to know, work with, encourage, and learn from so many of you.  We thank our true Master for the blessing of Church and Change and for you!

I was near a congressman's office when I stopped to take an insurance exam. I walked in and said to the assistant, "If he votes for this bill, there will be pitchforks and torches brandished, and I will help lead them."

He said, "I take it that is a no for you." He smiled.

He added, "There are many more like you. This does not have a chance."

There are many ways to stop apostasy, but wishing it away does not work. Another failure is hoping for someone else to do the work.

If enough people show enough spine to speak against an error, the church politicians will cease for a moment.

About 20 years ago, the Methodist Church released the list of hymns for their new hymnal, which included "Strong Mother God." As liberal as that mainline church was, with all the defections over the years, the phone lines were so jammed that no calls could come through or go out. And that lasted for two weeks.

The LCA/ALC had a similar reaction over their hymn-list, which was going to include a free version (O Mighty God) of How Great Thou Art instead of the Billy Graham HGTA. They had 20,000 letters when 20 letters are considered a landslide. They bought the Graham version and--chuckle, chuckle--used it as a selling point when promoting the Liberal Book of Weirdness.

If large groups of people can go ballistic over a hymn list (and they should), they can also do the same when their leaders fail to maintain discipline. One WELS observer said, "The only thing heard is the sound of silence. Grand Inquisitor Englebrecht is likely heating the tongs for the Fox Valley Five."

GJ - They all vary as much as icebergs that calve from a glacier. The two new splits have already planned using the ELCA seminaries, just as one of the earlier splits decided to use Fuller! Oh...my...Groeschel.

I applaud the congregations and pastors leaving ELCA. But, by keeping women's ordination, all of them are continuing the same downward plunge. WELS and Missouri have women's ordination, too. They are just engaging in probing operations now, an example here and there, to reduce opposition and say, "No one objected before. We have been doing this for years."

It worked for Church Growth and a host of other inanities.

Women's ordination is not the biggest mistake--because there are so many--but it reveals an attitude toward the historic teaching of the Scriptures and Confessions. They will pick and choose, turn the time machine back a few years.

Those who see this imagine the answer is Eastern Orthodoxy or Rome, helped by their sinuflecting professors at St. Louis and Ft. Wayne.

The situation is not not hopeless, but the momentum is 99% the wrong way.

I noticed that the Lutheran Ministerium-USA held a conference where they gave about seven papers on the Means of Grace. They seem to be moving toward a serious confessional stance, but I know very little about them.

WELS, Missouri, and the Little Sect have ignored countless opportunities to be synods where the Lutheran Confessions are studied and followed, doctrinal issues debated in the open. Marvin Schwan unwittingly sealed the lids on their coffins by leaving a billion bucks so they could build some shiny mausoleums in his memory. And they did!

Almost all the blogs are political, controlled and managed by factions jockeying for power or keeping the apostates in power.

The WELS pastors and laity are in a state of paralysis from the dragon's toxic stare, even though they see the characters behind him: Kelm, Gurgle, Ski, Jeske, and First VP Huebner. WELS replaced one CG VP (Wayne Mueller) with one who studied at Fuller
and mocks the efficacy of the Word.

Lutheran Martyr, by Neelak S. TjernagelI happened to find myself rereading, this weekend, the opening pages of Neelak S. Tjernagel’s biography of Dr. Robert Barnes (~1495-1540), Lutheran Martyr. Dr. Barnes was an Englishman, who lived during the reign of King Henry VIII. Like Luther, Barnes was an Augustinian – though at Cambridge. Following in the footsteps of Erasmus, he left Cambridge for the continent to acquire an education at Louvain, returning in 1523 with his Doctor of Divinity. Recognized for his scholarship, his order made him Prior of his house, a position he used to introduce the classical learning he had been exposed to at Louvain. Of course, knowledge of Luther and his theology was not hidden on the Cambridge campus, but, being Roman Catholic, such theology was officially forbidden and rejected. Knowing that it was being discussed anyway, at times the University even conducted searches for heretical books or pamphlets that may have made their way from Germany. For this reason, scholars often met off campus, to study the text of the Bible and discuss theology. One place they met was the White Horse Inn. Among the group who met there was Dr. Barnes, who was the indisputable leader of that group, Thomas Cranmer, who would later become Archbishop of Canterbury, and William Tyndale and Miles Coverdale – important Bible translators and publishers – along with many others who would later be referred to as theCambridge Reformers.

The synod that will accept Groeschel-plagiarism as a good thing will also endorse, by their silence, the Change N Die conference.

Ski and Jeske are just being open about their unionism. WELS leaders pose as Lutherans but they are monetarians. Money talks, doctrine walks.

The only honest minister at Change N Die is the ELCA pastor. ELCA does exactly what it says. They voted on homosexual and lesbian ministers, then welcomed them back in while kicking out the straights. ELCA loves unionism, and they practice it with gleeful abandon. They have doctrinal agreement with the United Church of Christ. "You don't believe anything? Neither do we! Let's commune together."

WELS/LCMS are against unionism but practice it with ELCA and everyone else.

WELS is against the homosexuality of ELCA, but posted a homosexual themed video made by future ministers at the College of Ministry, the maladroitly named Martin Luther College. The video was yanked for a short time, then posted back on YouTube and also on Facebook.

The talking points are the same, along with "I don't see that" and a few other refusals to engage the arguments against UOJ.

Here is a datum no one can dispute: The Missouri catechism taught justification by faith alone, decades before F. Pieper got UOJ into the Brief Statement of 1932. Before that, various brief statements did not mention UOJ. Sasse was concerned that the 1932 statement would supplant the Confessions, and it certainly has. Americans prefer junk food to the real thing.

Another datum is difficult for WELS to face. Their favorite catechism, perhaps their only one for years, was the Gausewitz. No UOJ can be found there. But there it is in the dreadful, expensive Kuske catchism.

UOJ did not appear until the unassailable Halle University, center of Pietism, taught it in the lectures of Georg Christian Knapp. The double-justification scheme of the Olde Syn Conference follows the Knapp wording, which was in print before C. F. W. landed in the Big Easy.

LCMS/WELS and the NIV
I may post more on Biblical translations soon. A WELS pastor admitted that all their precious books will be obsolete soon because the NIV will de-rez in 2012. They are not allowed to print their old false doctrine with the old NIV. Ditto Missouri. And get this, sports fans. The new, new NIV is loaded with feminist language, which is the reason for finding another bad translation. Who changed the hymnal while focusing on putting feminist language into it? Yes - WELS, as Victor Prange admitted. What the LCA/ALC did first (though not so stupidly), and WELS did next (really bad), the NIV will do decades later. So ban them! The logic is so Syn Conference.

Watch WELS and Paul McCain agree on another pea-brained Living Bible type version. It will not have "King James" in its title, although there are about six to choose from, including the very conservative KJV 21.

Once they finish agonizing over this, they will get to print new versions of everything and all the old books will be obsolete.

The Miracle of the Pancakes

Shrove Tuesday pancakes are a doctrinal issue in the CLC (sic).

Shrove Tuesday is a harmless way to use up the fat before Lent, not unlike the Jewish practice of using up leaven. "Shrove" comes from the practice of writing down one's confession of sins, the term being a corruption of the German word for write.

In the tiny, aging Church of the Lutheran Confession (sic), Circuit Pope Steve Kurtzahn managed to make pancakes sound felonious, a common problem with legalists. They invent their own commandments while ignoring the Ten Commandments. Thus a known adulterous, incestuous layman can destroy his family and be taken with utmost seriousness by the CLC (sic) clergy.

As the WELS Church Lady says, it is wise to stay away from them. In fact, Kurtzahn promoted himself back into the WELS after wrecking a number of CLC (sic) congregations.

Kurtzahn is now a regular on LutherQuest (sic), where the participants oscillate between truculent ignorance and psychosis.

Various Minor Items


I was happy to receive a bonus from one of the universities, making it two out of two in a few months. The previous one was for being in the upper percentile of their instructors, according to HAL, their never-sleeping statistics gathering computer. The new one is for scholarship and other activities. I thought, "This is good." They delay actual payment for one year, pending another year of work. That is even better, because they are trying to hang onto senior instructors.

Most of my teaching is in religion now, for various reasons. One school is limiting instructors to master's/PhD in the teaching area, so that limits me to religion and the graduate school in education. The other school has a large religious instruction program, so I have taught about 15 different classes, but mostly Biblical classes. No one has condemned me for teaching Lutheran doctrine, so you can rest assured they are not owned by WELS, Missouri, or the Little Sect on the Prairie. In fact, the students love having quotations from Luther, Gerhardt, and other orthodox Lutheran writers.

We should have a larger order ready for the May Trifecta, when the ELS, WELS, and LCMS get together (without ELCA, for once).

I laugh when people think the newest church politicians are going to change what has been happening.

The church politicians make it to the big time by going along with everything, knowing how dissent is punished.

They move adroitly into copying what has happened before, because it is just another stage in their career of conformity. They continue to do what they have done before, and the results are the same.

Some may ask, "Why is Ichabod so good at doctrinal polemics?" The reason is - practice. I have engaged apostates ever since my earliest days in the LCA. I argued with the professors in seminary and made fun of their weirdest theories. One was that a book revealed the author's secret knowledge of Christ, which was never known until about 1970. I repeated that and laughed out loud. The book was dropped from the course at once, although it was read out loud, solemnly, before that.

Likewise, I read from a book about Tillich at Notre Dame, where his liberal theologian friend called the adulterer a pagan. The professor was aghast as I said, "And that is his friend from Union, repeating what Union Seminary liberals said." The professor is now occupying an endowed chair at Harvard while I write a blog "no one reads." But at least I am good at it.

I studied comparative doctrine at Notre Dame, which was a good place to do it. We could argue doctrine in class, because there was no repeat after me dogma. That was a good start for WELS, where no one knew or adhered to Lutheran doctrine. Working in Columbus among adulterous false teachers, with divorce and alcoholism being the least of their sins, I learned the Book of Concord and its history. I had to find out for myself what the doctrinal issues were. The olde Syn Conference simply repeated the Crypto-Calvinist era, and it grows worse each day.

I never saw pastors who hated Lutheran doctrine and worship as much as the Columbus gang did. They even refused to have circuit meetings. One would think that the VP of the district and the circuit pastor would not need to have their feet put in the fire for the most basic of pastoral functions. But they did. And they made circuit meetings a farce too.

So laugh out loud when the ecclesiastical bigwigs say, "You can reform us only in the ways we allow, using the methods we dictate, while we pummel you." They conformists bullies are good at what they do, running everything into the ground.

Meanwhile, the useless Boomer pastors and laity will have this on their account - They are the reason everything has gone this way. They have done almost nothing, waiting for someone else to do it for them. The Boomer children will have few church jobs waiting for them. Churches and schools are closing at a record rate.

ELCA Sues Chinese Lutherans To Get Back the Property Given to Them

The pastor of HerChurch, which is totally pagan now, closed the congregation whose property was given to the Chinese Lutherans.
Now ELCA wants it back and is going to court for it.

Here's an interesting story. One of the congregations that has left the ELCA in the Sierra Pacific is Life Lutheran Church, Richmond, CA, one of two Chinese ministries in the synod (the other one left as well). Some years ago they had been given the property of a closed congregation (closed, actually, if I recall correctly, by the present pastor of herchurch.org). Now the synod's attorneys are telling them that they must vacate the property and turn it back to the synod. The justification for this is that when the synod deeded the property to the congregation, there was a clause in the deed saying that it would revert to the synod should it ever ceased to be used in mission in the furtherance of "this church." Now "this church" clearly is the way the ELCA refers to itself (rather grandiosely, IMO), and in the ELCA constitution it is clear that when they say "this church" it's the ELCA they are talking about. It does not, however--or so I've been told--say this in the deed by which the property was conveyed to the congregation. And so the legal question is an interesting one, since one has to read it against the clear constitutional provision that when a congregation leaves to affiliate with another Lutheran denomination (and they have affiliated with LCMC, as I understand it), they keep the property.

Interesting legal questions aside, I'm astonished that the synod wants to put itself in the situation of bringing suit to recover property given to an ethnic minority congregation, located in a place where the ELCA had been unable to keep a viable congregation going.

I have to admit that I have a special feeling about this congregation, since before they were given this property by the synod, they rented space from a Methodist congregation that was my first assignment in my previous life (though that was long after I was gone).

ELCA Congregational Newsletter Shows Disintegration

This ELCA congregation in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, tried to leave ELCA but fell short a few votes.

The newsletter shows that the congregation's members and staff are breaking up over the failed vote. In many cases, a failed vote has meant a new congregation forming almost immediately.

Even ELCA calls those votes to leave the synod "successful." Sometimes the bishops have to be honest, if only for a moment.

This congregation gives about $6,000 per week in offerings and has a very large staff.

ELCA takes every opportunity to divide and conquer. Notice that the required 66% vote is difficult to obtain on almost any serious matter. That is why I was pleasantly surprised to see congregations finally moving against the Lavender juggernaut.

ELCA began by saying, "Only a few are leaving." That was true for a month or two. The exodus gathered momentum. Now ELCA is going to be especially thuggish, which will only push congregations out faster and more effectively.

Thanks to blogs, Twitter, and email, Lutherans are no longer slaves to the lying. spineless church executives. ELCA is so bad that six bishops have jumped ship. Even slowly warmed frogs in the kettle will ask, "What's cooking?"

GJ - I used to think that nothing could pry congregations loose from ELCA. They were slapped and spit upon from Day One, when ELCA formed with lawyers leading the meetings. The attitude was: "Shut up. Sit down. Listen. Vote. Pay."

They got away with this, with only a marginal number of congregations and pastors leaving, 1987-2009, 22 years of grace...as they all like to say. The lavender triumph in 2009 changed that.

Missouri, WELS, and the Little Sect on the Prairie think they are in control of their property. They push out any minister who threatens Holy Mother Synod, and HMS is easily threatened.

All that can change in a moment.
