The Wisdom of the (W)ELS - found in the strangest places.
Lutheran Worship Reforms of the 1500s that We Can Still Use Today Stephen P. Valleskey Prepared for the Pastor Teacher Delegate Conference WELS Meeting at Abiding Word, Houston, Texas January 21-22, 2010 Some see the former as having happened with our beloved The Lutheran Hymnal, the hymnal this writer grew up with, memorized, loved, and worked with the first half of his ministry. The Lutheran Hymnal was published in 1941 and not replaced in WELS circles until the publication of Christian Worship in 1993. Historically, wisdom has been found in producing a new hymnal per each generation. The Wisconsin Synod produced its first English hymnal in 1911, Missouri in 1912. The Wisconsin Synod added a book of hymns in 1916. Thus for both Wisconsin and Missouri about 30 years passed, one generation, before their hymnals were replaced by The Lutheran Hymnal. We applaud the work of our synod’s worship commission in putting out the Supplement to Christian Worship and helping already to get us thinking about new forms in which the timeless gospel and ageless liturgy of the church may be presented. https://connect.wels.net/AOM/ps/worship/Worship%20the%20Lord/6.%20Worship%20Words%20-%20Issues%2036%20through%20current/43%20-%20Contemporary%20-%20July%202010/Valleskey-Lutheran%20Worship%20Reforms.rtf
"In order to reach a...budget of $38 million....PLANS WILL BE PUT IN MOTION (relying)solely on the grace of God..."(oxyMORON)..."PLANS WILL OFFER SPECIFICS ON HOW TO DO THAT.." (solely on the grace of God)oxyMORON! ..."POINTEDLY DIRECTING ALL TO THE 'WHY'...PERCENTAGE OF INCOME OFFERRED...(solely on the grace of God)-oxyMORON!
Now WELS is going to "pointedly direct" the faithful in how to be joyful while we shake 'em down, using the cross and the empty tomb-the most sacred living symbols in Scripture. Every WELS member should ask this self-invited intruder if the Synod will use these generous gifts in a manner worthy of the cross and the empty tomb. But, hey, an every-member visit! Dr. Jackson says pastors should do more visitations! And who says nobody reads Ichabod?
And to celebrate 500 years with no indulgences, Synod can indulge in more offerings! I mean, who started the Reformation anyway? And instead of praying for the dead, through estate planning the dead can be "joyful stewards" too. This is even bigger than the Jubilee Bailout! In these days of rising unemployment, hyperinflation, and the possible collapse of the dollar, it's reassuring to know that WELS is just too big to fail. Jim Becker
"Graduate from MLC staff minister candidates and laymen who meet the needs of local congregations."
So in other words: "if your local congregation didn't send you to get trained, don't even think about getting a call in staff ministry, bub. Oh sure you can count on us taking your tuition without a problem, but that's about all you can count on."
"Possible term limits for district officials"?!
Most promising thing I think I've seen on this plan, but let me guess, the Catch-22 is that it would only pass if the DPs vote on it, so in other words it will not pass?
