Our Philippine Mission Effort - by Pastor Jordan Palangyos

Bethany Lutheran Church - Our Philippine Mission Effort

A Glimpse of our Church Planting Site
By Jordan Palangyos

Our church planting site is in Wallayan and Delles, La Union, Philippines, a two-hour trip from my home. I live in Baguio City, Philippines (a former American Base).  From home,  I have to travel by taxi to go to the bus station. I ride a bus and transfer to a tricycle when we reach town center. From the town center, we ride a tricycle to reach our church planting site.

The Town center

A tricycle

The  challenge is that the road going to our mission station is not along a jeepney line. No public transport goes there due to its far-flung location. We have to hire a car to go there. The most affordable  mode of transportation is a tricycle. Sometimes, the tricycle drivers do not want to transport us because of the difficulty going up in the mountains.

                                                       Description
We have two mission stations. These stations are quite close to each other.  The place is a Mountainous rural area in Northern Philippines. The road is cemented but very narrow.    The people we are ministering to are composed of kankana-ey tribe. They are peace-loving people. Majority are farmers and broom makers. Most of the houses are shanties made of galvanized iron sheets. Few concrete houses are under construction.

More brooms

However, we are faced with challenges such as the presence of mambunong (shaman or pagan priests),  spiritual decay (gambling, cockfighting, apathy, and immorality), and abject poverty. In addition, there is an increasing number of mothers who work abroad and leave their children in the care of husband, relatives, or grandmother.  Some of these children are in our Sunday school.

Despite such, God is at work. People are very much interested to learn God’s word. In fact two families always welcome me, my wife, my two kids and sometimes my brother, Judah. My wife is my partner in the mission field. Naturally, our kids tag along with us. The two families offered their simple houses as the venue for our Sunday worship and discipleship training classes.

The other house who always host our discipleship Training

Today, March 31, 2019, I discussed Dr. Greg Jackson's Gems Mined from Luther's Sermons. Thanks to Dr. Greg Jackson's generosity in donating us his books. We now have materials for our discipleship classes.

We are just starting. There is much work to do in God's vineyard. We ask His grace guidance, and providence (specially for the church building and transportation vehicle) for us to actualize and execute the following programs:

E.       Strengthen the children groups

II. Evangelism Program

B.      Sunday school teachers' training
C.      Bible distribution
E.       School visitation
F.       Inductive bible study
G.      Baptism
H.      Cathechism

III. Educational Needs
              A. The reading needs of the children
              B. English Grammar and Communication needs of the youth

IV.Plan to Improve the community
A.      To coordinate  the water needs of the community (Water is scarce now)

 V. Work in progress
1.       Regular Sunday service in the backyard of one of the members
2.       Regular Sunday School for about 15- 30 children
3.       Continuous doctrine class for the youth
4.       Continuous Discipleship classes of the adults
5.       Church construction
6.       Team building

We are one in prayer for our Lord's guidance, grace and wisdom so that in all the things we do, it is HIS name that we proclaim, trust, and worship.

Jesus Loves the little Children

Opening a congregation is tough and challenging especially if working as an independent missionary. Plans, strategies and resources must be done carefully. I am so blessed to have a wife who really supports me in doing mission work.

Our work started when an unknown guy invited us to visit in their place. A mountainous area for we have to travel more than an hour to reach the place. It is tough in the beginning for only 3 to 4 adults are coming to listen and attend worship. I am so disappointed and wanted to quit and look for a place more receptive to the Gospel. One Sunday my family went to serve together with my two kids; to our surprise 11 little children are sitting and waiting for us that Sunday. We are stunned and asked who sent them? One little girl answered— "Our grandmother (the most dedicated woman in that place) told us to come and listen to the Word of God."

I cannot believe my ears; God really works in mysterious ways. God used these little children to inspire u…

Walk of Faith

Walk of Faith

Blessings  come And light had always shined His Hands touched my heart Ignited me to walk forward Worries were unchained Doubts wereforgotten I will walk the land Reaping those fruits of faith I'll say farewell to my family But I'll take them in my heart I'll say goodbye to my ambitions But Good will be my reward.  -Judah Palangyos

We're going to the Golden Gate

Salvation given by His blood,
Victory in Golgotha,
The promise that was spoken,
Now, His Spirit is among us,
Leading us to our mansions,
We'll soon ride in a golden chariot,
Taking us to the golden gate,
The sin of man was defeated,
Evil failed to his mission,
Soon will have our perfection,
Soon will enter paradise,
We'll soon ride in a golden chariot,
Taking us to the golden gate,
All the sickness of the world,
All will be crumpled and be trashed,
He had fulfilled the promise,
Heaven is in our grasp,
We'll soon ride in a golden chariot,
Taking us to the golden gate.

In The Country Side

In The Country Side
By Judah Palangyos There’s a poor man With no books at hand He remained idle When given the Bible The Spirit had taught him well Now he got good news to tell We can find him in the country side Just join the ride

There’s a farmer With a very sick father Every meal they pray Goes to church every Sunday Gives more than ten percent To praise Him is his intent Goes home smiling With his heart singing We can find him in the country side Just join the ride
There’s a mom Strong but calm
She reads the Bible with her child
Putting God’s Word above all
Accepting Christ as the Savior
Guided by the Spirit So that her home will not fall
We can find her in the country side
Come and join the ride.
