Scent-sational: Insects and Humans Love Them in the Creation Garden.
Clethra and Many More!

Sugar Spice, Summer Sweet, or Clethra.

I was casually reading some gardening anecdotes, trying to understand the magic of Clethra. The nicknames should have given it away -

  1. Sugar Spice
  2. Summer Sweet.
One gardener talked about getting around to a corner of the garden where the Clethra grew and getting that heavenly scent. I decided to move the two little shrubs to the front yard, to discover that instead ignoring the plant, which some vegetation overshadowed.

Then - one day - I knew. I smelled an aroma like cinnamon, though no flowers were blooming. This spring, I caught the other fragrance - sweet. Summer Sweet, Sugar Spice. The butterflies and beneficial insects love the tiny flowers and fragrant bark. A short course in beneficial insects, even if you ignore them. Aim for tiny flowers (mint), fragrant little flowers (Clethra), and giant compound flowers (sunflower).

Luther's Romans Commentary - UOJ or Not?

bored has left a new comment on your post "WELS - Study the Book of Concord?Better Study  Wal...":

A little off topic but...Here's a passage from Luther that destroys the UOJ interpretation of Romans 5:18-19.

(NAS) Romans 5: 18 So then as through one transgression there resulted condemnation to all men, even so through one act of righteousness there resulted justification of life to all men. 19 For as through the one man's disobedience the many were made sinners, even so through the obedience of the One the many will be made righteous.

Luther wrote:
"(v. 18) Here the Apostle says 'all'; first, because as all who are begotten of Adam are born again (through faith) in Christ; and secondly, because as there is no carnal begetting except through Adam, so also there is no spiritual begetting except through Christ. (v. 19) Here the Apostle speaks of "many" and not of "all" to show that the emphasis is not on the number of the sinners or the righteous, but on the power of sin and grace. If sin proved itself so powerful that a single transgression has perverted many, or rather all, then divine grace is much more powerful; for the one act of grace (Christ's atonement) can save many, indeed all men, of many sins, if they only desire it."
(Martin Luther, Commentary on Romans, trans. Theodore Mueller, 1954, Zondervan, pg. 97)

Objective Justification - the fire in the belly of the smells and bells guys in the LCMS. Below is Beane's conduct on Facebook.

Pater Larry Beane Gregory, please use your own Facebook page for self-promotion. I charge $100 for ads.

You're getting to be like the embarrassing relative that drinks too much at Thanksgiving and passes out on the bed with all the coats on it.

Every family has members who want to hijack every expression of gratitude and joy, every real discussion and lighthearted banter, and even obvious humor, into a self-serving and dour political or doctrinal argument.

Gregory, you need to display better behavior from now on, or you won't be invited back.

To my other guests, I apologize. Hopefully your coats will not require dry cleaning.

"Stop sending me ads for Opti-fast!"

Everyone had something to say about Pastor Herman Otten, but Matt the Fatt courted the CN editor to become Synod President.

Matt and his groupies went to New Haven, Missouri, to flatter Otten and sing a hymn of praise to him. Apparently, Matt played his banjo and sang. I am not sure because I was not invited. Doubtless Paul the Plagiarist McCain arranged the lovefest from behind the curtain at the Purple Palace.

The author of this doggerel is not listed, but Matt was leading the singing, trying to look cool. He only succeeded in looking like a funeral director one pint over his limit.

Everyone who questions a synod is called crazy. That is routine, because the fat cats cannot imagine risking their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, let alone their Thrivent goodies. I have been called crazy countless times, LutherQuest (sic) is only the most recent case. They erased and apologized when it became clear they were legally liable.

Begging for help, singing a love song, and then singing "insane" and a "liar" and "deceiver" - that shows the quality of leadership Harrison offers.

I used to think that McCain revealed Matt's dark side, but McCain is his doppelgaenger - obsequious when needy, back-stabbing when convenient. They remind me of a statement about Joe Kennedy - "I don't know why he is trying to destroy me. Joe was never a friend of mine."

Not a photoshop. Repeat - not a photoshop.

Greek Lesson - Mark 6:1-20

By Caravaggio - scan, Public Domain, Link

Parser - tells us the I.D. of the word

Lenski's Mark Commentary - download as a PDF

ΚΑΤΑ ΜΑΡΚΟΝ 6 1550 Stephanus New Testament (TR1550)

Fatherland

χειρ becomes chiro in English

Not scandalized but fell into the trap of unbelief, those facts were the trigger, the skandalon

Three-fold - a prophet not without honor except

Lenski, Mark - Only the fact is stated that Jesus was able to do but a few miracles in Nazareth. Luke 4:28-88 explains this inability: the people rose up, thrust Jesus out of the city, and tried to kill him. When Matthew attributes the small number of the miracles performed in Nazareth to the unbelief of the people, this is the unbelief and its manifestation that he refers to. When Jesus healed the few sick persons is not indicated; it may have been on Friday, before the Sabbath

peri - ago, go around

clean, add an a - unclean,

Travel light - tell the big mission boards!

Use of hospitality

δέχομαι - important parallel with believe but not quite the same

They did not tell people they were already forgiven.

All active. The disciples did this, Jesus gave them the exousia.

Foreshadowing of Jesus rising from the dead.

Lenski, Mark - Herod's crime was a public outrage. The woman had first married her own father's brother and then ran away and lived with the half-brother of her hus band, who was also her half-uncle and already had a legal wife. Two marriages were disrupted, and the new union was not a marriage. It was plain adultery and within the forbidden degrees of consanguinity. Josephus charges Herodias with the intention of con founding her country's institutions. No wonder John raised his voice in spite of Herod's being the ruler. "To have" =t to have as wife. "The wife of thy brother" brings out one great feature of the unlawfulness.

Too Bad David Scaer Unleashed a Horde of Ignorant Bullies on the LCMS-ELS

I was thinking about this post from Jay Webber, which WELS Discussions made disappear on Facebook.

Jay's tactic, modeled after David Scaer's maneuvers, is older than ragweed and just as prolific.

If you start listing the Objective Justification bullies -

  • Jack Casione
  • Paul the Plagiarist McCain
  • Jay Webber - with an ELCA online STM
  • ELDONA (post-conversion, they are just bullies) -
they have one thing in common, a bad education at Concordia Seminary, Ft. Wayne, Indiana, 46825.

Scaer bragged about his longevity in his overpriced autobiography. The Lulu book should be printed free as a warning to all. He failed his German PhD so he recycled his credits at Concordia St. Louis, submitted the same thesis, and got a seminary PhD. All he wanted was being a parish pastor, which is why he went to two different schools for a PhD. Sure, parish pastor Dave, so why not help out a struggling parish now?

That nostalgic claim is not exactly fresh and unusual. All the synodicats who have big salaries and deluxe benefits loudly long for the joys of the parish ministry. They are like the professional baseball players who ache for the joys of backstreet baseball with worn bats and makeshift equipment.

What came through Jay's incautious eructation actually expressed the spirit of the entire Scaer book - disgust with Justification by Faith. Scaer's vendetta against the Chief Article is striking and revealing of the radicals in the LCMS-WELS. In both sects, the radical Leftists took over their synod by replacing Justification by Faith with the mainline favorite - Justification without Faith - Objective Justification.

Just as the abortionists must get rid of all pro-life people, so the OJ fanatics - who are just plain stupid about Biblical doctrine - must rid their synod of any outbreak of Justification by Faith. Like the abortionists, they must paint the traditionalists as entirely evil, destructive, and menacing to all.

Scaer was appalled that Walter A. Maier II was hired to teach at Concordia, Springfield, where he was teaching. The school was transported to Ft. Wayne by Jack Preus, years later.

Scaer was even more appalled that WAM III was hired at Ft. Wayne, hinting at the fatherly influence of WAM II, but never mentioning his own son teaching at Ft. Wayne.

Scaer is like his former students on LutherQuest (sic) who are scandalized by my PhD from Notre Dame but not by the many PhDs from Notre Dame at Ft. Wayne. They need to review the saying about what comes out of a man

Mark 7 21 For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders,
22 Thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lasciviousness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness:
23 All these evil things come from within, and defile the man.

Scaer also indulges in the categories used by Calvin and Walther.

  • Calvin - anyone who disagreed with him was an Arminian.
  • Walther - anyone who disagreed with him was a false teacher.

"Yet both Robert Preus and Jack Preus could not accept what they saw as the denial of objective justification by both Walter Maier I and his son Walter Maier II. His views also became an issue in September 1989 with the calling of Walter Maier III, whose views were seen by some faculty members as virtually identical with his father’s view. Neither understood this doctrine according to traditional Missouri Synod definitions. For the Preus brothers, this was not a minor issue. Jack Preus was not the only one to look into the issue. Ralph Bohlmann also did. The inability of the Missouri Synod once and for all to bring this matter to a conclusion may partially lie in that the Missouri Synod had long been “Protestantized” in an Arminian direction."

Scaer, David P.. Surviving the Storms: Memoirs of David P. Scaer. Luther Academy. Kindle Edition. #5646.

We never learn the reason for Scaer's disgust with the Chief Article, other than the false claim of Justification by Faith going against the LCMS traditional view.

Thanks to prior research done by the sainted Pastor Harley and additional research done by someone else, it is clear that the original official view of the LCMS was - Justification by Faith - for many decades.

Like the warning of Orwell's 1984 novel, all of history must be re-written and the past destroyed to support the newer, better understanding.

And where else is this practiced, even on Luther's grave? Jay Webber's ELCA online ILT -

Since David Scaer's pal Jack Kilcrease teaches there, we can assume they are slaves of the crafts and assaults of OJ.
Note the language - the Quia Marias miss that the Chief Article is by faith, not at all bad in Paul or Luther, even if it gives the fanatics the heebie-jeebies. They believe, as James says, but their hides bristle. James 2:19

The Walter Maier clan looks jolly rather than fierce.
Why did the LCMS fail to stop Dr. Walter Maier I from teaching inerrancy and Justification by Faith? Now the OJ LCMS of Matt the Fatt opposes inerrancy and Justification by Faith.

Wonders in the Creation Garden

This Chaste Tree shrub has no problems with being pruned or being moved.

Surprises - especially the pleasant ones - are common in the Creation Garden.

This year is full of wonders, because the rainfall has been generous, but so has the sunshine. Before I can empty the rainbarrels, they are overflowing again. Nevertheless, I empty them regularly to prevent skeeters.

Almost Eden got me involved in shrubs, so I now have two fully developed Chaste Trees and two little ones. The little ones came from fearing I killed one from a move in dry weather. Once the replacement came, the dead one was thriving. Chaste Tree has a definite medicinal smell; its deep blue flowers are enticing to bees and striking to neighbors. Our neighbor Mrs. Gardener said, "What is that beautiful plant?"

Joe Pye is easy to grow, if watered in dry spells.
I order mine early from Growthers Exchange.

Joe Pye came up so often on butterfly plant lists that I bought a group of them from The Growers Exchange, the only plant source I trust now. They were slow to impress, but last year the senior example soared to 7 feet, filled the air with its scent, and attracted butterflies constantly. The junior class is looking robust, and even the new Little Joe Pyes are budding in time. Little Joe Pye was developed for those who do not want a giant in the garden, so it is more of a flower box plant.

Our first Mountain Mint was buried by accident under cardboard and mulch, but burst through later to flourish and spread.

Mountain Mint, which also drives insects crazy, arrived as a tiny plant. This year two large areas are ready to bloom at about five feet in height.

Cats love Cat Mint, a mint that grows in circumference but does not go wild with roots.

Cat Mint grows low, but two plantings have grown in circumference and bloomed very early to host the bees and tiny beneficial insects most people ignore or swat away. My plan for dry weather is to plant some dug from the mother ship around the maple, to have a colorful circle in an area which favors weedy growth.

Almost Eden sold me 17 Spirea bushes (Neon) for about $1.50 each. They were small but hardy, planted as the fence around the rose garden, which expanded beyond them. The result has been that the Spirea, mints, and Joe Pyes have grown almost together, but leaving room for roses to grow and soak up the sun.

Fever Few grew to five feet and bloomed. It was just a tiny flower when I grew it in Midland, where it spread to every bare spot. The moment it bloomed, beneficial insects were on it.

Shasta Daisies, the dandelion of flowers, grew from two plants and my efforts at dividing them. They are fully budded and just starting to bloom. Tachinid Flies love daisies - and those flies love killing aphids.

A wise gardener praises his neighbor's Hotas, which have to be thinned. What better way to increase these natural Hummingbird feeders?

When I planted Hostas, I feared that rabbits would devour them. The current herd of cute bunnies suggests some sampling of all the plants, but no big losses. The Hostas are robust and blooming, ready to be divided later. I was going to do that in the fall but decided to let them have their leap year first:

  1. Planting new ones, keep them alive year.
  2. Second year, sleep year.
  3. Third year, leap year, which is true of many shrubs.
Portrait of the Creation gardener, before the harvest.
I cut these Easy Does It roses for our granddaughter's wedding. My siblings asked, "Did you really grow them?" Our paternal grandfather and our mother were legendary rose gardeners.

Typical WELS

Good morning Pastor Jackson,

Don’t know if you saw this on the WELS Discussion board or not but thought I’d bring it to your attention: Winnebago Lutheran Academy Teacher Under Fire Female Circumcision Lesson.  Some readers on the WELS Discussion board can’t see the forest for the trees, getting hung up on little details instead of the true meat of the story.  Does the story have plenty of clickbaity words that will catch a Google search?  Oh indeed.  The reporter isn’t foolish in that regard.  School choice in Wisconsin, Lutherans, linking this story to the gay valedictorian that wasn’t allowed to address the school, female circumcision, it is all a potential cornucopia of hot takes and buzz words.

Regardless of how one feels about how the school handled this topic and the teacher that brought it up female circumcision in class, personally I feel that he was completely run out of town on a rail by a weak-kneed school administration, there’s one point in the story that only illustrates the bullying mentality that can run rampant in the WELS:

Several persons who had affiliations with the academy were contacted by USA TODAY NETWORK-Wisconsin, but declined to be interviewed for fear of retribution, they said.”
“Fear of retribution”.  Retribution.  At this point, I shouldn’t be shocked by any from the synod or synodical schools or school boards of education, but “retribution”?  Amazing what was said by these people not commenting, isn’t it?

Retribution.  I think of Clint Eastwood during the finale of Unforgiven when I think of retribution.  I certainly don’t think of a “Christian” school.  But now my eyes are opened as to how a definition can be broadened.  As an alum of this school, I find this even more destatable and simply disgusting.

And now because of these events, a good man and a good teacher is kicked out.  No chance for another call and the public sector won’t touch him, if he even wanted to go that way.  A 24-year veteran instructor of WLA is gone and over something that certainly didn’t warrant a forced resignation.  I had him as an instructor back when he started there and as his focus was social studies, this wasn’t a topic that was beyond the realm of coverage.  Besides he taught it for 15 years and the school board and administration apparently had no issues with it for over half of his teaching ministry there.

Oh and to add to it being even more disgusting, here’s the newest update as of yesterday 6-17-19: Fond du Lac Teacher Claims He Was Forced To Resign After Lecture about Female Circumcision In that article, we get a reply from a pastor who says nothing, brings up no real details other than being weak-kneed, and I’m shocked some random and not-relevant Scripture passages weren’t thrown in for good measure, as that’s the usual Winnie-Lu way.  Perhaps that pastor could also answer as to why there were persons affiliated with the Academy who feared retribution for speaking about this.  Doubtful that’ll ever come to light.

I hope and pray that all is well with you and your family.

Take care and keep up the good fight on Ichabod!

LutherQuest (sic) Crybabies Still Run from the Scriptures

"He is calling us crybabies again."
"What if we are?"

I gave the LQ (sic) denizens a simple challenge - address these key passages:

  1. Genesis 15:6
  2. Romans 4, summed up in Romans 5:1-2
  3. Galatians 3:6-7
They have quoted everyone except Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez, but they still run from the Scriptures.

A Literary Criticism Exercise - How Do Selected Chapters in Romans
End and Start?

30 Seeing it is one God, which shall justify the circumcision by faith, and uncircumcision through faith.

31 Do we then make void the law through faith? God forbid: yea, we establish the law.

4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?

2 For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.

3 For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.

23 Now it was not written for his [Abraham's] sake alone, that it was imputed to him;

24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;

25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

---

The chapters and verses are arbitrary, added later, but the themes are not. We can see how Paul used the ancient literary device of starting a theme and concluding one part of the theme or argument through transitions to the next stage.

One's teachers, parents, grandparents, synod, heroes, or villains should not make any difference. Biblical doctrine is derived from the ruling norm, not from secondary sources. I could explain how the latest LQ (sic) Gerhard quote is not OJ, but why bother with someone who runs away from the Book of the Holy Spirit, the Bible?

Yet, one of their persistent LQ (sic) fanatics, Jay Webber, spent 50 pages trying to get a tiny audience to share his delusion that Luther was OJ.

Jay Webber's Online Seminary Deceives People about Justification by Faith

WELS genius level pontificators Zarling and Bivens did this with Justification. They used the language about Justification by Faith (the Bible, Luther, etc) and applied it to Objective Justification - Calvin, Huber, Halle University, Knapp, Stephan, Walther, Barth.)

Knowing that Jack Kilcrease was educated ELCA and teaches Roman Catholics, serving on the ILT online faculty, I am not shocked that Webber hardened and calcified his Pietistic OJ at the school.

Too bad that Webber inflicted his ignorance and errors on the audience of Emmaus, with Buchholz grinning like a hog in the wallow. But it is even worse to have ILT use the face of Luther to deface Christian doctrine.

Bee Balm and Bee Bread Bloom and Bumblebees Love Them

Ohio State has a better bee on Bee Balm than I could manage.

The first cluster of Bee Balm is in full bloom. Ranger Bob came over for coffee and gardening plans, but asked first, "What are those flowers in bloom?"

I was watching the older planting of Bee Balm grow shoulder high and bud. The blooms were open and swarming with bumble bees.

Besides that, the beneficial insects were flying in and out, the fighter jets in comparison to the bumble bee tankers. If someone wants a reason to defend the Six Day Creation, consider the flowers without the bees, the bees without the flowers, the beneficial insects without pests to feed their young.

I do not argue from the data, but I think about the engineering and management issues of interdependent species and creatures (I mean evolutes). If the right combination arrives late in that enormous span of millions of years, if not billions, how do they thrive and exist? My highly educated siblings cannot arrive to an event on time, yet all the garden life-forms indicate they have done this forever, on time and under-budget, adjusting to fit the circumstances.

My two favorite unknown insects are a mystery to most gardeners-

  1. The springtails, which may weigh more than all of mankind put together, and
  2. The ichneumon wasps, which are broken down into 6,000 varities, according to The Snoring Bird, a classic work on the topic.

Birds hunt by sight; the ichneumons hunt mainly, but not exclusively, by scent. Not any caterpillar (or its pupa) will do. Like the over 6,000 other species of the Ichneumoninae— all of them parasitize Lepidoptera (moths and butterflies)— this particular Protichneumon will search for something very, very specific. For her, it is the caterpillar of a green sphinx moth that is artfully camouflaged like a leaf. This ichneumon has a bright reddish-brown abdomen.
Heinrich, Bernd. The Snoring Bird (Kindle Locations 1178-1181). HarperCollins. Kindle Edition.

Springtails are tiny and help the rotting and recycling effort. Ichneumon wasps are almost as hard to see, yet they work tirelessly in the Creation Garden.

Bee Bread, also known as Borage, is always a bit ragged looking, but the bees go for the blooms, which quickly turn into seeds and replant their feeder. The flowers are edible and improve one's mood. "I borage, give thee courage."

I plant Borage by sowing the seed, just before or during a rainstorm. By growing a lot of pollinator plants (for bees, beneficial insects, and butterflies), I protect the roses from most predators.

This majestic Veterans Honor rose was placed on the altar in memory of all veterans and Christina's cousin, Pete, below. No man-made chemicals were used to protect the flower, which was defended by the Creator's beneficial creatures: hover flies, ichneumon wasps, and spiders.

Pete Ellenberger served his new country, like many in his family.

ELDONA on Branding the Micro-Mini Sects

Heiser did not know about Objective Justification until Rydecki was kicked out of WELS? How can a Ft. Wayne graduate and disciple of David Scaer make such a claim, especially after working with Higher Things (the LCMS OJ-Jungendbund)?

Higher Things has a hilarious speaker who shouts each message into the camera while reading his cue cards. "When do you want your couch delivered, mam?" Klemet Preus was president of the Jungendbund and an ardent UOJ activist when Heiser spoke for them years ago.
Heiser was at Ft. Wayne when Robert Preus was arguing UOJ and promoting Church Growth.

False Doctrine - And the Cure - Illustrated

Funding Planned Parenthood abortions - for years, through Thrivent.

Luther says this about false teachers:

False Doctrine Tolerated
"And such false teachers have the good fortune that all their folly is tolerated, even though the people realize how these act the fool, and rather rudely at that. They have success with it all, and people bear with them. But no patience is to be exercised toward true teachers! Their words and their works are watched with the intent of entrapping them, as complained of in Psalm 17:9 and elsewhere. When only apparently a mote is found, it is exaggerated to a very great beam. No toleration is granted. There is only judgment, condemnation and scorn. Hence the office of preaching is a grievous one. He who has not for his sole motive the benefit of his neighbor and the glory of God cannot continue therein. The true teacher must labor, and permit others to have the honor and profit of his efforts, while he receives injury and derision for his reward."

Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 110f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. Psalm 17:9.

God Punishes Ingratitude by Allowing False Teachers

"In the second place such teachers are disposed to bring the people into downright bondage and to bind their conscience by forcing laws upon them and teaching works-righteousness. The effect is that fear impels them to do what has been pounded into them, as if they were bondslaves, while their teachers command fear and attention. But the true teachers, they who give us freedom of conscience and create us lords, we soon forget, even despise. The dominion of false teachers is willingly tolerated and patiently endured; indeed, it is given high repute. All those conditions are punishments sent by God upon them who do not receive the Gospel with love and gratitude."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. John 5:43.

False Teachers Flay Disciples to Bone

"In the third place, false teachers flay their disciples to the bone, and cut them out of house and home, but even this is taken and endured. Such, I opine, has been our experience under the Papacy. But true preachers are even denied their bread. Yet this all perfectly squares with justice! For, since men fail to give unto those from whom they receive the Word of God, and permit the latter to serve them at their own expense, it is but fair they should give the more unto preachers of lies, whose instruction redounds to their injury. What is withheld from Christ must be given in tenfold proportion to the devil. They who refuse to give the servant of truth a single thread, must be oppressed by liars."

Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

Avarice in False Teachers

"Fourth, false apostles forcibly take more than is given them. They seize whatever and whenever they can, thus enhancing their insatiable avarice. This, too, is excused in them."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

They Lord It Over Us

"Fifth, these deceitful teachers, not satisfied with having acquired our property, must exalt themselves above us and lord it over us...We bow our knees before them, worship them and kiss their feet. And we suffer it all, yes, with fearful reverence regard it as just and right. And it is just and right, for why did we not honor the Gospel by accepting and preserving it?"

We Are Their Foot-Rags
"Sixth, our false apostles justly reward us by smiting us in the face. That is, they consider us inferior to dogs; they abuse us, and treat us as foot-rags."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

False Teachers Are Peacocks

"The peacock is an image of heretics and fanatical spirits. For on the order of the peacock they, too, show themselves and strut about in their gifts, which never are outstanding. But if they could see their feet, that is the foundation of their doctrine, they would be stricken with terror, lower their crests, and humble themselves. To be sure, they, too, suffer from jealousy, because they cannot bear honest and true teachers. They want to be the whole show and want to put up with no one next to them. And they are immeasurably envious, as peacocks are. Finally, they have a raucous and unpleasant voice, that is, their doctrine is bitter and sad for afflicted and godly minds; for it casts consciences down more than it lifts them up and strengthens them."
