Hey--Church and Change Convention--
Some New Ideas That Work

Church's money giveaway: Alsip pastor's cash prizes fill pews

Minister's focus is to help congregation pay bills and begin a debt-free life

In Alsip, the Rev. Dan Willis holds a box with cash that he gives to lucky worshipers at his services. (Tribune photo by Zbigniew Bzdak / October 28, 2009)

At Lighthouse Church of All Nations in Alsip, the congregation can get more than just prayer at the Sunday worship services.

If a lucky -- or "blessed and highly favored" -- churchgoer is in the right seat, they can also receive a cash prize.

At each of the three Sunday services, the Rev. Dan Willis pulls a number of one seat from a bag and the worshiper in that seat wins a cash prize. Two of the churchgoers win $250 and the third gets $500. The church gives away $1,000 each Sunday, Willis said.

The cash prize is part of Willis' recent focus on helping his congregation pay bills and begin a debt-free life, he said.

"We've had soooo many of our people displaced from jobs, facing foreclosure," he said. "When people's faith was high, their debt was down. When their faith was down, their debt was high. I realized the two are connected."

Willis concedes the cash prize is a gimmick to fill the pews. But he's unapologetic about the plan, because it's working. On a typical Sunday, his church draws about 1,600 people to its three Sunday services. But since the money giveaway started, about five weeks ago, the congregation has grown to about 2,500 each week, he said. The money for the giveaway comes from the church offering. Lighthouse is a non-denominational church.

"If I can get someone in here and teach them and give them money, that's what I'm going to do," he said.

As part of the lessons, Willis set up a shredder near the pulpit to encourage church members to shred their credit cards and commit to stop spending. He talks about budgeting, tackling past-due bills and saving. He encourages the prize winners to use the money to pay down their bills, rather than splurge on new items. One Sunday, he gave away 15 savings accounts with $25 already in them. And he had bank representatives at the service so church members could set up accounts.

"The Bible says even an ant stores up in the summer so it can live in the winter," Willis said. "Even an ant can teach us. Even an ant knows how to save. We, with intellect, don't know how to do it. When people see that in Scripture, it takes on a whole different level."

White Horse Inn

Those Wacky Presbyterians

Covenant Presbyterian Church in uber-hip Los Angeles has started a pet-centric worship service.  The linked article says this is something of a mini-trend, crossing denominational boundaries and showing up as “pet blessing” services or “Woof and Worship” services.

It’s easy to write this off as just another bad idea that emanates from a failing evangelicalism, but I wonder if we should pay closer attention to the crying need for community that is expressed by some of the “worshippers” at the Covenant service.  They have traded in family connections for pet connections. As important as those are, they cannot be life-sustaining, no matter what sort of piety we dress them with.

If the pastor and church in question recognized this, the possibilities for true outreach would be significant. Instead, doggie treats are served and the congregation sings a hymn titled, “GoD and DoG.” Sigh.

Statistical Summary of WAM Essay

Fish Fry for Pastor Maier

What a glorious event, to see so many people gathered at Our Savior Lutheran Church in Lansing, Michigan for a benefit fish fry for our Senior Pastor David Maier. There were literally hundreds of people that came from between 5 and 7 p.m. for this excellent dinner and to support one of the best pastors in Lansing, let alone all of Michigan.

People came from as far as Chicago and Fort Wayne to support Pastor Maier and his family as he goes
through his battle with lymphoma. Many of the pastors from the Lansing circuit came to join us, as well as special visit from the LCMS Michigan District President, Bill Hoesman and his wife, Barbara.

Maier_menOn the left is a picture of Dr. Walter A Maier II, Pastor Maier's father, Dr.Paul Maier, Pastor Maier's uncle, in blue Pastor Maier, and on his left is Walter A Maier III, Pastor Maier's brother. What a great moment to have them all together, great men of God, great leaders of the faith, and great prayer warriors. The church has truly been blessed  by such men whose leadership exemplifies Christ's love for his people, teachers who have demonstrated a heart for their Savior and a joy in the Lord.  We pray that the ministries of all four of these men will continue to benefit the church for many, many years to come.

A big thank you to all who showed up to support Pastor Maier and his family, and a thank you to the men and women who were very exhausted from working the Fish Fry, went home smelling like fish and got a good night's sleep, I am sure. The fish was excellent. (And I don't even like fish!)

[GJ - I met WAM II at Ft. Wayne and heard him speak. He was very sociable and always had that big grin on his face. I have a lot of regard for Robert and Jack Preus, but they really sandbagged WAM II on UOJ. Robert lived long enough to write a retraction - Justification and Rome. Someone should tell Rolf and Dan.]

Let's try that link again.

I have suggested that the Synodical Conference was weak in the area of the efficacy of the Word in the Means of Grace.

In his essay, efficacy and efficacious are not used at all for the Word of God. The "efficacious work of Christ" is mentioned twice.

The "Means of Grace" is mentioned twice.

The most devastating arguments against UOJ are the overlapping terms: efficacious Word, Means of Grace.

I need to spend more time on the essay to say more, but I do think my criticism fits many Synodical Conference efforts.

Luther, the Book of Concord, and General Council writings are very clear and consistent about the efficacy of the Word and the Means of Grace. Schmid's Doctrinal Theology is also clear about these terms.

The reason for the Synodical Conference vacuum may be this: Walther set himself up as the official dogmatician and chose Pieper to follow...in his steps. In His Steps - is a famous Pietistic novel. Walther liked to defend propositions. He was not a Biblical theologian.

UOJ Fans Are Church Growth Disciples

Those who hate Church Growth need to admit they are doctrinal partners with them, via UOJ.

Fox Mulder has left a new comment on your post "DK's Offer For the Chicanery Convention Tomorrow":

To say that UOJ states that all men should just go to heaven, is to take out of context what I said. Yes, Romans 5:18 says that justification applies to all men (and it very clearly does) but in context is also clear that no one enters heaven but through Christ. The verdict toward mankind is that through Christ they are not guilt (sic), but a man can certainly deny this mercy, and remain an unbeliever.

***

GJ - I am amazed that the CG Enthusiasts can overlook Romans 5:1-2

KJV Romans 5:1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

and shoehorn Knapp's Pietistic double-justification scheme into the rest of the chapter. Paul must have lost track of what he was saying a few verses before. The Apostle's mind must have wandered after spending Romans 4 on Abraham as the father of faith.

Strangest of all, Luther and the Concordists never noticed this UOJ opinion.

Lenski did a careful analysis of the entire New Testament and never found UOJ in any passage.

UOJ Stormtroopers endlessly repeat their favorite slogans without enlightening anyone.

Church and Change: Jekyll Dr. Jeske and Mr. Hide

I suffered through the latest Jekyll and Hyde show, a popular musical in spite of its dreadful plot and music. At least Phantom of the Opera is full hilarious incongruities. Nevertheless, I found the Big Song in Jekyll/Hyde a good illustration of Lutheran pastors joining Church Growth - and why.

JEKYLL:
This is the moment!
This is the day,
When I send all my doubts and demons
On their way!

Every endeavor,
I have made - ever -
Is coming into play,
Is here and now - today!

This is the moment,
This is the time,
When the momentum and the moment
Are in rhyme!

Give me this moment -
This precious chance -
I'll gather up my past
And make some sense at last!

This is the moment,
When all I've done -
All the dreaming,
Scheming and screaming,
Become one!

This is the day -
See it sparkle and shine,
When all I've lived for
Becomes mine!

For all these years,
I've faced the world alone,
And now the time has come
To prove to them
I've made it on my own!

This is the moment -
My final test -
Destiny beckoned,
I never reckoned,
Second Best!

I won't look down,
I must not fall!
This is the moment,
The sweetest moment of them all!

This is the moment!
Damn all the odds!
This day, or never,
I'll sit forever
With the gods!

When I look back,
I will always recall,
Moment for moment,
This was the moment,
The greatest moment
Of them all!

The Lutheran CG leaders are Jekyll/Hyde split personalities. They pretend to be Lutheran but they really despise Lutheran doctrine and worship. Once they turn against the Means of Grace, their hatred toward all things Lutheran seems to know no limits. Yet most want to pretend this has not been happening for the last three decades. Church and Change is currently showcasing their hatred for the Lutheran Church. Perhaps some of them will jump ship for Missouri, but that does not make them Lutheran.

The content of Church and Change, past and present, is all anyone needs to know about their agenda. They hate having the secret listserve being published. It's like being caught with the flask in one's hand, the evil smoke curling from the toxic contents.

DK's Offer For the Chicanery Convention Tomorrow

I need a stretch Lincoln for the quotations.

dk has left a new comment on your post "DK's Big Van Available for Confessional Raid on Ch...":

Well,
IJ Reilly, I'm not sure if you're Confessional or a C&Cer so take this how you want:

It's better to do something about a problem than to sit around and gripe. I'm not saying anything about you or readers of this site, but there are A LOT of Confessional WELSians that just gripe. That's part of the reason the WELS is where it is; because the people who actually saw the problems just complained and stuck their heads in the sand of "it'll never happen to us".

What've you done Reilly? I've informed at least 15 people (five pastors)about UOJ, most of whom have done the applicable homework (easier thanks to Dr. Jackson) and come away with the belief that UOJ actually does challenge the efficacy of the Word. Beyond that, I've been writing to old friends who were led astray (towards Enthusiasm) with me back at WLC. I'm engaging people in conversation about the problems in the WELS and LCMS, asking hard questions of people who've been given authority.

I'm not "oh so proud" of anything I've done in this regard. It's small potatoes. But at least I go beyond complaining. And if I want to go pass out fliers to C&Cers at their little convention (and maybe paint my van) more power to me.

Chronic gripers are marginalized and petty.

Dr. Jackson's Lincoln is truly the Uber-Swank and house paint would sully it. Must be my van.

Howdy Professor!

If you could write me a one paragraph statement about how Church and Change wants to destroy the Efficacy of the Word I would appreciate it.

I'm going to go down to the C&C conference and pass out fliers. I'd really like to engage some of these folks in conversation and give them a flier with a concise summary on it.

I'd really love to have a group of Confessional WELS folks to join me. I can fit about ten people in my van. Maybe if we don't make a spectacle (will a painted van) people will be more likely to join me.

Email me if you're interested in joining me. My goal is win over our fellow Christians and to fight the Enthusiasm that's infecting the WELS.

GJ - Here is my paragraph. Copy and paste as you see fit:

Church and Change began--and still exists--to promote the false doctrine and unionism of Fuller Seminary and its offspring in WELS. This group hired Baptist Ed Stetzer to teach WELS members and pastors the Word of God - only the intervention of the District Presidents stopped them. Earlier they hired Leonard Sweet! This organization trusts human methods rather than the efficacy of the Word. They are eager to replace Biblical worship with rock entertainment, as if people could be sneaked into the Kingdom of God rather than converted by the Gospel Promises. They believe coaching, a current business fad, will make the church grow. They despise the Means of Grace, as proven by their loathing of the liturgy and Creeds, their refusal to serve Holy Communion at Sunday services, and their blatant copying of the sermons of false teachers: Mark Driscoll, Craig Groeschel, Bill Hybels. The leaders of this group have knelt at the feet of false teachers at Fuller Seminary, Denver, and Gordon Conwell to earn their DMins in Church Growth. They worship with false teachers such as Andy Stanley, Ed Stetzer, and Mark Driscoll.

KJV 2 Timothy 4:2 Preach the word; be instant in season, out of season; reprove, rebuke, exhort with all longsuffering and doctrine.

KJV Isaiah 55:8 For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, saith the LORD. 9 For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways, and my thoughts than your thoughts. 10 For as the rain cometh down, and the snow from heaven, and returneth not thither, but watereth the earth, and maketh it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower, and bread to the eater: 11 So shall my word be that goeth forth out of my mouth: it shall not return unto me void, but it shall accomplish that which I please, and it shall prosper in the thing whereto I sent it.

"Wohl scheint auf den ersten Blick die ganze Differenz recht unbedeutend; aber in Wahrheit gibt sich hier die gefaehrliche Richtung der Pietisten zu erkennen, das Leben ueber die Lehre, die Heiligung ueber die Rechtfertigung und die Froemmigkeit nicht als Folge, sondern als Bedingung der Erleuchtung zu setzen also eine Art Synergismus und Pelagianismus einzufuehren. (At first glance, the total difference seems absolutely paltry, but in truth the dangerous direction of Pietism is made apparent: life over doctrine, sanctification over justification, and piety not as a consequence but declared as a stipulation of enlightenment, leading to a kind of synergism and Pelagianism.)" Salvation Army - Holiness Denomination

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "WELS Salvation Army?":

http://www.wels.net/cgi-bin/site.pl?1518&cuItem_itemID=20395&cuTopic_topicID=20

The Salvation Army is Holiness denomination. It is not merely a charitable organization but a heterodox denomination.

The Arminian theology of Methodism can be seen in the Salvation Army's teaching that election or predestination depends on the foreseen conduct of the individual. Lutherans teach that there was nothing in us to cause God to choose any of us; our election is caused by God's grace and God's grace alone. Lutherans place the primary emphasis in theology on what God has done for us by justifying us, declaring us not guilty for the sake of Jesus who was condemned in our place.

The Salvation Army places its main theological emphasis on sanctification, the holy life that we are to live. Like Methodism and the other Holiness Churches, the Salvation Army teaches perfectionism or entire sanctification. Lutherans teach that the Christian will remain both sinner and saint until he dies. The Christian will struggle against sin until at death he is freed forever from sin and sin's consequences.

Lutherans teach that the Holy Spirit creates and sustains faith only through the means of grace, the gospel in Word and Sacraments. The Salvation Army historically has taught that the Holy Spirit works directly on the human heart apart from the means of grace.

Among Christian denominations the Salvation Army seems to be unique in not practicing either Baptism or the Lord's Supper. Lutherans place a strong emphasis on these two sacraments as means through which the Holy Spirit works to create or strengthen faith and brings us the forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation.

Since the Salvation Army is a heterodox church body, we cannot readily separate their charitable work from their false teachings. For that reason we cannot support such a group (2 John 10-11). Although we might admire the zeal of the Salvation Army to help the downtrodden, we cannot participate in that work with them. We might rather want to support those charities operated by the Wisconsin Synod, ELS, and congregations in our fellowship, or charities that are not connected to any religious organization.

Dear Enews Family,

I have been an early riser all my life. It goes back to growing up in a family that owned a fresh produce business. But for someone like me to be tossing and turning two hours before sunrise, after a sixteen hour work day at Willow...well that is worth trying to figure out.

Female Worship Leader: Jet lag? Nope. I have been in the same time zone for weeks. Family trouble? Nope. My family still graciously puts up with all my quirks. Anxiety? The world has its share of troubles, and I like many of you, have felt the need to pray more fervently for so many who are suffering. But after reflecting on that for a little while, I knew that wasn't the root cause of my sleeplessness.

Chicaneries: Jet lag? Nope. I have been in the same time zone for weeks. Family trouble? Nope. We recently returned from one of the most enjoyable vacations we have ever had. Anxiety? The world has its share of troubles, and I like many of you, have felt the need to pray more fervently for so many who are suffering. But after reflecting on that for a little while, I knew that wasn't the root cause of my sleeplessness.

Female Worship Leader: Being the seasoned spiritual leader that I am, I finally resorted to a formula that has been a secret embarrassment to me for decades: "When all else fails...turn to God and ask for help." When I quietly breathed a prayer for insight from above, the Spirit whispered, "It is old fashioned excitement, Bill.

Female Worship Leader: You felt it in years past when Holy Week services were filled with a sense of anticipation and wonder and you are feeling it again now. It is a good thing. In fact, why not revel in the fact that you have been doing something for fifteen years and you love it so much that you can't sleep come ‘game day’." Duh.

Chicaneries: You felt it in years past when Good Friday and Easter services were filled with a sense of anticipation and wonder and you are feeling it again now. It is a good thing. In fact, why not revel in the fact that you have been doing something for thirty years and you love it so much that you can't sleep come ‘game day’." Duh.

Female Worship Leader: Last night I prayed for Scott as I knew he would be putting on the finishing touches for the three Maundy Thursday Services. And today I'm contemplating the final rehearsals for our Good Friday services, and felt a sharp pang of sadness that it is not being broadcast all over the world. It was that touching to me. I was completely convinced that any and all who experience it will be moved to tears as I was, and as irresistibly drawn to the Crucified One. The Tenebrae services are at 12:30, 3:30 and 6:30 tomorrow.

Chicaneries: Last night I sat through the final rehearsals for our Good Friday services, and felt a sharp pang of sadness that it is not being broadcast all over the world. It was that touching to me. I was completely convinced that any and all who experience it will be moved to tears as I was, and as irresistibly drawn to the Crucified One. The first service starts tonight at 7:00 p.m. (And then we get to do it three more times on Friday--at 4:00, 6:00, and 8:00 p.m.!)

Female Worship Leader: Earlier in the day John, a few others and I reviewed the Easter message. (Remember we are at West High, 966 Shawano Ave. at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m.) As the group left my office, I sat with John and we grieved over the fact that we would only be having eight Holy Week services! All John and I could talk about was the redemptive potential of the next four days. Who knows what God might do--in how many lives?!

Chicaneries: Earlier in the day God had graciously given my Easter message to me, after which the team and I reviewed the Easter program one final time. As the group left my office, I sat alone for just a moment and grieved over the fact that we would only be able to do it seven times! At the end of my workday Greg Ferguson and I did our typical run, but at a ridiculously fast pace, because all we could talk about was the redemptive potential of the next four days. Who knows what God might do--in how many lives?!

Female Worship Leader: Friends, don't miss anything these next few days. Don't miss private promptings from God regarding what He wants you to reflect on this Holy Week. Don't miss a single opportunity to ask additional friends and family to come with you to the services. Don't miss the teaching moments with young children that this season affords. Miss a little sleep...but don't miss anything else. Deal?

GJ - To show the extent of the plagiarism from Willow Creek, I made the Parlow/Limmer message the female worship leader's words. I repeated the same passages in the EARLIER Hybels email on the same topic. Tis truly amazing how Limmer/Parlow had the same restlessness, the same grieving, the same emotions. Yes, even grief can be plagiarized in the last days of an insane, old world.

Bill Hybels runs the Willow Creek franchise, which Parlow/Kelm joined, yet no one has a problem with a WELS church belonging!

Bill Limmer was learned how to copy and paste at St. Mark Willow Creek.

Parlow attended the Babtist Drive 08 conference with Ski, Katie, and others from WELS.

When Seminaries Rot, Congregations Pay the Price:
Two Chicaneries Advised The Sausage Factory

Randy Hunter has a female worship leader, so he gets a vicar--thanks DP--to spread the apostasy.

WELS used to say about the LCMS:
  1. The fish rots at the head.
  2. The seminaries go first.
  3. The worst liberals are in the headquarters city.
That would never happen to WELS, they imagined, because they had watchmen on the towers of Zion, to borrow a phrase from Walther. To honor the latest and perhaps last convention of Church and Change, let us recall some horrifying facts.
  1. Two of the most notorious C&C members--a competitive list, needless to say--have advised The Sausage Factory on how to improve seminary education! Those Chicanery leaders are Paul Calvin Kelm and Kudu Don Patterson. Kinda like Planned Parenthood advising Lutherans For Life.
  2. David Valleskey and Frosty Bivens worked together to promote the Church Growth Movement, coming out of the Fuller closet rather early. Valleskey became VP of The Factory and Bivens became a professor and VP. In WELS, VPs become president.
  3. Richard Gurgle, at The Factory, agitates for the Chicaneries on their listserve. The Enthusiasts do not want just one Manchurian Candidates on their sem faculty. They want the bench full of them.
  4. James Tiefel presided over the most feminist, Pietistic, and Growthy hymnal in Lutheran history. To defend their feminist Creeds (note the plural), WELS hauled out heresiarch Ted Hartwig, of Two Isaiahs fame (Mary Lou College).
  5. The Doctrinal Pussycats have sat around "with their teeth in their mouths," to use a Midwestern expression. Doctrinal oversight must mean "to overlook, to ignore, to extend the Left Foot of Fellowship to anyone who notices the change."
After years of grabbing power and saying, "You must listen to us, because we hold the office that gives us authority," the Chicaneries are now furiously fighting the top official, who was elected to undo their harm. Some recent exits include:
  1. Wayne Mueller, former First VP, denying/promoting Church Growth;
  2. Peter Kruschel, another Love Shack drone;
  3. Dave Kehl, in the control tower for the Love Shack's Airport;
  4. Bruce Becker (Love Shack and Chicanery board);
  5. Paul Calvin Kelm, DMin, AARP (The CORE Bible study leader);
  6. Elton Stroh, who turns imaginary churches around;
  7. Mark Goeglein, the genius behind Cross-Cultural, MLK, and Latin American disasters.
Congregations are paying the price for 30 years of seminary mis-education, leveraged by sage advice from Chicaneries Patterson and Kelm. Recall, if you will, that Patterson led a group of WELS workers to the Exponential Conference, possibly the worst confab of wacko Enthusiasts in the land. Recall, also, that Kelm resisted all efforts to disinvite Leonard Sweet (New Ager) as Chicanery Conference speaker. Not only that, Kelm refused to address the issue on his own secret Chicanery listserve, even though the Shrinkers always say, "You have to sit down with me and tell me my sins instead of going public." As they say on every sportscast, "What is the bottom line?" The bottom line is - WELS seminarians are graduating as lazy Enthusiasts who give horrible sermons, turn worship into entertainment, and embarrass anyone who is even mildly Lutheran.

In one incident, the sermon given by a guest pastor (WELS) was so bad that the lay leaders refused to put it on their website. Parlow/Kelm stopped uploading their downloaded sermons and calling them their own. Ski and Glende gladly agree that their joint sermon ideas and content come from Okie Craig Groeschel. After all, Kelm has no problem giving a Bible study downloaded from the Net. Was that the advice Kelm gave Mequon - more sermon downloads?

It is a sad commentary on Lutheran education that the One Thing Needful is scorned, neglected, and abused. Every single Lutheran pastor has four great opportunities in his congregation: 1. To give original, Biblical sermons, in a quiet and respectful atmosphere, where everyone listens. 2. To lead a liturgical service where the Gospel Promises are emphasized and articulated in a variety of ways. 3. To teach adults and youth the Word of God. 4. To take the Word of God to people in pastoral visitations - to the bereaved, hospitalized, shut-in, and unchurched.

KJV Luke 10:39 And she had a sister called Mary, which also sat at Jesus' feet, and heard his word. 40 But Martha was cumbered about much serving, and came to him, and said, Lord, dost thou not care that my sister hath left me to serve alone? bid her therefore that she help me. 41 And Jesus answered and said unto her, Martha, Martha, thou art careful and troubled about many things: 42 But one thing is needful: and Mary hath chosen that good part, which shall not be taken away from her. I enjoy the daily albeit anonymous demands that I repent. I also get scornful comments on how no one reads the blog - especially funny when that person reads every single post critical of CG and responds to it. And - how few members I have. Every single comment like that reveals how far they have fallen, not only from the Lutheran confession of the truth, but from the Christian faith entirely. The word for that is apostasy.

KJV 1 Timothy 4:1 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart (verb form of apostasy)from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils; 2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron; KJV 2 Thessalonians 2:3 Let no man deceive you by any means: for that day shall not come, except there come a falling away (apostasy)first, and that man of sin be revealed, the son of perdition;

Church and Change is a synod-funded agency for apostasy. That apostasy has reached and permeated synod headquarters, Mequon, and Mary Lou College.

Planned Parenthood Director Is Now a Pro-Life Activist

The LCMS-ELCA marriage is also revolting.

The entire story is linked here.

The director of a southeast Texas Planned Parenthood office has resigned after eight years.

Abby Johnson had a change of heart after watching an ultrasound of an abortion. She now works for the Coalition for Life, a pro-life group that often prays outside her old Planned Parenthood office.

Johnson said her bosses pressured her for months to increase profits by performing more abortions.

***

GJ - Believe it or not, the LCA took a pro-life position at its Chicago convention in 1978. Mrs. Ichabod and I were there. The leaders responsible for the pro-life initiative were pushed out of their positions and the abortion fans took over. Now ELCA pays for abortion-on-demand through its health plan. Their health plan alone would be reason enough not to work with ELCA on any project for any reason. LCMS - take note. Perhaps some LCMS officials will watch the video and apply its lessons.

dk has left a new comment on your post "Chicanery Conference Program":

Howdy Professor!

Would you like to get to Milwaukee this weekend, Dr. Jackson? I bet we'd have fun making my van into the Luthermobile. I would be honored to have you as my guest. I've a comfortable couch and the skill to cook amazing meals.

Apparently no one believes me when I previously wrote that I'm willing and able to donate the aesthetics of my big van for the cause of confessional Lutheran.

If you are a confessional Lutheran WELS person living in Milwaukee (or willing to make the trip) email me at folkright@gmail.com. We will paint up my van with Luther quotes and circle the Wyndom parking lot passing out fliers to C&C folks.

This is a serious offer. What a better way to engage in Lutheran fellowship?

Who says Confessional Lutherans can't have fun?!!

I read the real program. I tried to find something useful in it. I noted that "Word" was used a few times (not as many as "coaching", etc.). Prayer, lots of prayer. What happened to an emphasis on Word and Sacrament ministry? How will any church grow without it!?!?

After reading the program, all I could think was, "What a bunch of crap."

TM has left a new comment on your post "WELS Extension Fund Sponsors Church and Chicanery ...":

Check out the "Core Values" of the Groth Design Group. Particularly amusing is their commitment to the holy grail of all liberal endeavors: Social Justice.

Sustainability: I agree that God wants us to be good stewards of creation, but He blessed us richly with resources we need to survive. Put simply, if humans do not exploit earth's resources, we will all die. Finally, I would hope that even the Church and (money) Changers worship God before they worship the earth.

Diversity: again, I firmly believe that discrimination (against the categories listed) is sinful and don't disagree that this is admirable. The danger here lies in joining in the ecumaniacal chorus of post-modernism which seeks to reduce any firm principles to a pragmatic mush.

Equity: again, sounds good on paper. The danger here lies in their attempt to find solutions that accommodate differing points of view. This pragmatic slur comes straight from Kant's post-modernist handbook. Whether this company believes in this or not, they are being strategic in attempting to ride the current wave of Socialist sentiment that is infecting our society.

Building Consensus: here they talk about the pragmatic reconciliation of differing views. I could care less if they want assemble a "human rights" tribunal or engage in alternative dispute resolution to decide what color tiles to use in the bathroom. The real danger here is their stated standard operating procedure: COMPROMISE.

Compromise is exactly what groups like Church & (money) Changers Inc. attempt to do by importing foreign concepts into the ministry. Ayn Rand (noted atheist)said that "In any compromise between food and poison, it is only death that can win. In any compromise between good and evil, it is only evil that can profit."

Unfortunately, we all know the end result when the Word of God is compromised.

Social Justice is a cruel bag of tricks used by Satan to hoodwink unsuspecting souls into believing that man, of his own volition and good works, can attain the divine status of a saint.

That C&C is sponsored by this company with these particular values surprises me not when the methods that C&C is so eager to cut-and-paste from are from the sinful world.

"...the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one." 1 John 5:19

"...do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind, that you may prove what is that good and acceptable and perfect will of God.... Abhor what is evil. Cling to what is good." Romans 12:2, 9

"Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world -- the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life -- is not of the Father but is of the world. And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever." 1 John 2:15-17

"If you were of the world, the world would love its own. Yet because you are not of the world, but I chose you out of the world, therefore the world hates you." John 15:19-20

Invited Schroeder to Church and Chicanery Conference?

Invite WELS Synod President Mark Schroeder.

JR has left a new comment on your post "Ichabod Breaks Ranks With Confessionals To Promote...":

Does anyone know if President Schroeder is planning on attending this conference?

I'd love to see everyone send him an email message asking him to go to the conference.

I wish I could see the look on Ski's face when he started his speech to see our WELS President there in the crowd.

Please, please, please. Someone attend this conference and report back to us on it. I would prefer audio/video evidence if at all possible.

***

GJ - For the sake of diversity, the Chicaneries should invite a Lutheran to speak. The elected leader of the synod would be a good choice, just to confuse the audience!

DK has left a new comment on your post "Ichabod Breaks Ranks With Confessionals To Promote...":

If some Confessional WELS member wants to protest the C&C conference I will donate the use of my very large van.

With a little white housepaint (Which I'll provide as well) an enterprising individual could, with a little work, paint a Confessionally Lutheran Message on the side of my van and park it at the Wyndham Hotel--armed with fliers describing how Church and Change is challenging the Efficacy of the Word.

As long as the individual borrowing my van promises not to let my van get towed I could care less what they write on it--as long as it's good theology.

Perhaps TMJ4 News could be notified!!

I think if the person were positive, with the intent of winning people over my giant F250 extended body van would really help separate the sheep from the goats! I live 15 minutes from the conference site!

I'd do it myself, but since I left the WELS for doctrinal reasons, I don't think I'd be the best choice. I'll pay for the printing and assist in handing out fliers though.

Professor: Would you write a one paragraph summary of C&C's disdain for the Efficacy of the Word, suitable for a quarter-sheet flier?

I just know I'm going to get swamped with people taking me up on my offer!

Dragged Through the Mud, Or Dragging One's Congregation and Synod Into the Mud?

Mark Goeglein, nominal Lutheran
This Just In:

One Shrinker thinks I have "dragged Mark Goeglein's name through the mud" by suggesting he taught at a Babtist church. Given that premise (Babtist, mud, etc) then why did Church and Change invite Babtist Ed Stetzer to teach WELS? New Ager Leonard Sweet to teach WELS? If associating with Babtists is so mud-inflicting, why does the Jeske circle spend so much time studying under them. I swear, Katie and Ski need a monthly fix  to help them make it to the next annual Andy Stanley Babtist Drive Rockapalooza.

Why did WELS kelm Warren's awful Porpoise-Driven material and publish it? Warren is a Babtist. I saw his dunking pool at Saddlesore.

I already posted WELS congregations like St. Mark, Depere, in full fellowship (by their own volition) in the Willow Creek Association or the Rick Warren Denomination. Are they dragging their own names through the mud? Or Luther's?

GJ - Church Growth Enthusiasts have been renamed Shrinkers on this blog because they are so good at shrinking the size of their synods and the budgets thereof. Look at their numbers for the last 30 years - they stink. Shrinkers have increased their salaries and the numbers of apostates hired, but everything  worthwhile has gone downhill.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Dragged Through the Mud, Or Dragging One's Congreg...":

What a ridiculous post. You totally dodge the point made by myself and that other poster.

What proof do you even have that Goeglein is working with Church and Change? As far as I know, he has had no direct ties to them (perhaps you could provide some evidence to the contrary).

You are digging yourself deeper and deeper in slander, without any evidence to back it up. If it were a public sin, that would be one thing, but you have nothing to back up your slanderous assertions. And when prompted, you provided nothing else, but rather you dodge the issue completely.

What does God's Word say about unrepentant slanderers? Since you publicly sinned against Pastor Goeglein by posting unsubstantiated rumor aimed at hurting his good name, you should publicly state such and repent.

As is, you are no better then the many men you decry.

***

GJ - I promote C and C all the time. I am waiting for them to quote me.

Like I said, if going Babtist is mud-throwing, why is C and C so eager to make WELS go Babtist? Look ye for a monument to Jeske? Look around at the wreckage caused by C and C, his personal sandbox.

It is English but in order to communicate the Law and Gospel to these people, you will need to learn a new vocabulary." Page 126, left column, last paragraph

"1. Through the means of grace, keep cultivating an attitude of selfless Christian love. Attitude can’t be stressed enough or too often. The gospel’s goal is not behavior modification, but transformation of worldview and our whole way of thinking, speaking, and acting." Page 126, right column, 2nd paragraph

"Preaching of the gospel and making disciples is the primary mission of the Church," Page 127, left column, 4th paragraph

"9. Thank God and celebrate the successes. Don’t be suspicious of those who are having success in reaching out to people of other cultures. We would hope that all congregations and their leadership feel confident that other pastors, teachers, and congregations will allow them their Christian liberty so that they will not be exposed to judgmental criticism for changing externals in an attempt to reach out cross-culturally. Let’s allow the gospel to create its own forms among the new generations and cultures that the Holy Spirit gathers in." Page 128, right paragraph, 1st full paragraph

Money Abuse in the Synods

Live on free-will offerings?
I'm a Giving Counselor, not a pastor!

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "From Norm Teigen":

The Great Commission is ultimately self-perpetuation of the church. There always needs to be a church on earth to baptize and teach God's people and to carry the gospel to the ends of the earth under the Savior's promise to be with them as they do this to the end of the age. Consequently offerings are needed for the church to self-perpetuate. Self-perpetuation is not always bad in and of itself.

The baby bottles are little different than the Mite Boxes of LWMS. In fact, my WELS church happens to give offering envelopes to its members and asks them to return them on the appropriate Sundays as dated on the envelopes. Maybe Norman Teigen has heard of them too. From his letter, I would assume he has never used them and has also asked the ELS president to order them discontinued from ELS churches. I suppose he is also against end-of-year offerings which are apt to be given for income tax purposes more than solely to the glory of God.

What we need to be concerned about is socalled "development" work which is based almost purely on secular tactics. Doners, especially "well-healed" ones are buttered up with all kinds of fluff and talked into giving their money. Often the appeal is to their sinful flesh and not to the "new man," to guilt and not to the Gospel. In addition, development work will get money in any and every way and place possible -- auctions, fund-raisers, foundations grants, the government grants, insurance companies, tuition (from non-members -- and from any people possible -- unsuspecting lay people, the heathen, the heterodox, non-members in our schools, even from foreign students who pay big bucks. Any fool who will part with this money if fair game.

The church is now after third source income, when the church should have one source income.

The one source is our offerings to God given as an act of worship in our Sunday morning worship services. The second source that crept in is tuition at schools which were once funded by their churches. The third source that crept in is money from development work. I will suggest that the monies received outside our Sunday morning offerings have ultimately been the downfall of our schools and our synods -- both ELS and WELS. All the blessings of the big money years are now coming to naught.

***

GJ - The multiplication of appeals has not worked well. I find the constant effort to tie the church and school into commercial promotions (grocery stores, Thrivent matches) an embarrassment. The message is - "We cannot support our own work, so we need others to bail us out." Commercial fund-raising is often found where congregations are giving 2% of their income.

Thrivent proved how vulnerable matching gifts can be when they decimated their programs and called off one matching deal three months early. Patterson rang the alarm bells early. "There goes my trip to Africa!"

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Money Abuse in the Synods":

I nominate Patterson for the WELS Salvation Army. He is a good man.
