WELS Blames Massive Losses on Lack of Babies

They all signed up for Fuller Seminary courses,
and look what happened
to ELCA-LCMS-WELS-LCMS-ELS-CLC (sic).

What are the two major themes of WELS? Three - if we count lying?

  1. Universal Objective Justification.
  2. The Church Growth Movement - now called missional, etc.
  3. Deception.
The bad leaven of forgiveness without faith has been permeating the so-called conservative Lutherans ever since CFW Walther learned his dogma from an abusive Pietist who did not even finish his degree - Martin Stephan, STD. Walther identified with Pietists and participated in Pietist conventicles, as his circle did.

The Halle replacement of Justification by Faith did not dominate the Synodical Conference until later. The more UOJ took over, the greater the influence of mainline apostasy, the more feverish the search for gimmicks - typical of unbelievers.

Fuller's Church Growth Movement was cleverly managed and adroitly sold to mainline denominations - a solution for their malaise. Feed Fuller money, mission executives, and professors - voila! - transform the denomination. No, no, nothing to do with actual Christian doctrine. Fuller had no time for that - wink, wink - they had great things to accomplish.

Honoring the 500th Anniversary with gee-gaws:
CPH sells these.

We now know that the WELS and LCMS leaders were hotter than Georgia asphalt for Fuller, and so was ELCA. The dumber the leaders -Werner, Olson, Bivens, Valleskey, Kelm, Huebner, et al. - the more they loved their Fullerism and hated the opposition.

Missouri was completely out about Church Growth, but WELS was more feverish and secretive. Wayne Mueller lied in print about WELS engorging itself on Church Growth. Valleskey and Bivens either bragged about going to Fuller or lied about it, depending on the audience. Valleskey was angry with David Koenig (CLC) for telling me the truth, which made Koenig furious with me for printing the facts about Valleskey and Fuller.

All the Lutheran seminaries are emptying out, because they have nothing to teach. The congregations are shrinking because they despise the Gospel, repudiate the Means of Grace, and treat members like dirt. Leaders take pride in being colossal jerks and reward their mirror-images in the lower clergy.

Nothing was ever done to address the false doctrine,
except Mark Schroeder paved the way for more of the same.

WELS Conceals Why They Are Shrinking Faster Cotten in Hot Water -
All About the Statistics

Your mission dollars at work - John Lawrenz
and Steve Witte were part of Church and Change's founding.
John argued withe Holy Spirit about going to Hong Kong,
never a good idea, and passed the Fulleroid baton to Steve Witte.

---
Fuller dudes always get out the statistics, not the Scriptures. The LCA did the same presentation in 1978.

Why did the church Tim Glende abandoned grow
so fast after Star of Bethlehem sold the building to Babtists?
The new congregation teaches Justification by Faith.
WELS, Glende, Brug, and Brenner teach against it.

Let us analyze why it is not the fault of crimes against members,
alcoholic pastors and teachers, false doctrine, and management by shunning?

Some prepared this graphic for our little blog.

But we have been teaching Church Growth for 40 years!
We silence anyone who teaches Justification by Faith.

Gems from Luther's Sermons, Volume 3

Gems Volume 3

Christ’s Kingdom – poor, needy, wretched
9. Now, Christ uses this trait or nature of the animal as an illustration in explaining that he is the good shepherd. In this manner he plainly shows what his kingdom is, and wherein it consists, and would say: My kingdom is only to rule the sheep; that is poor, needy wretched men, who well see and realize that there is no other help or counsel for them.
Misericordias Domini, First Sermon

Christ Rejects Nobody
20. Therefore, we should so preach Christ as one who will reject nobody, however weak he may be, but will gladly receive and comfort and strengthen everybody; that we may always picture him to ourselves as a good shepherd. Then hearts will turn to him of their own accord, and need not be forced and driven. The Gospel graciously invites and makes men willing, so that they desire to go, and do go, to him with all confidence. And it begets a love for Christ in their hearts, so that they willingly do what they should, whereas formerly they had to be driven and forced. When we are driven, we do a thing with displeasure and against our will. That is not what God desires; therefore it is done in vain. But when I see that God deals with me graciously, he wins my heart, so that I am constrained to fly to him; consequently, my heart is filled with happiness and joy.
Misericordias Domini, First Sermon

Faith Moves Us to Good Works
22. If in this way you have Christ as the foundation and chief treasure of your salvation, then follows the other part of laying hold of him as your example, that you give yourself to the service of your neighbor as he has given himself for you. Notice, then faith and love will be exercised, God’s commandment will be fulfilled, and man becomes happy and fearless to do and to suffer any and everything. Therefore, give heed and mark well; Christ as a gift nourishes your faith and makes you a Christian; but Christ as an example moves you to do good works; these do not make you a Christian, but they go forth from you who have already become a Christian.
Misericordias Domini, Second Sermon

Not the Outward Appearance
60. Here we are also to learn, as I have often said, that we must not judge of the kingdom of Christ and his church by the outward appearance and with the judgment of reason and human wisdom. For here you are told that this knowledge of the sheep belongs to Christ alone, and that it is as much hidden to reason under the greatest offense as he himself was when hanging on the cross.
Misericordias Domini, Second Sermon

We Have Neither the Joy Nor the Persecution
But when Christ departs out of the heart, then the joy also departs. The grace continues, but the conscience can easily fall. I tell you this to the end that you may not be offended in the future, when many of you shall fall from the Gospel and deny Christ. For wherever Christ shall be with his joy and comfort, there the cross and persecution are also soon at hand. But I fear we have neither the joy nor the persecution, since we so little appropriate the Gospel. We continue ever in our old nature and despise the dear and precious treasure of the Gospel; therefore God will visit us with greater punishment than he did the Jews, namely, with blindness and error. As Paul says to the Thessalonians: “And for this cause God sendeth them a working of error, that they should believe a lie: that they all might be judged who believed not the truth, but had pleasure in unrighteousness.” 2 Thessalonians 2:1-12. For God cannot allow his Gospel to be disgraced. That one should stumble he will indeed allow, but for one thus to despise his mercy he will not permit, and it is not right that he should. Therefore, it is to be feared that heresy and working of error will come, so that no one will know what is the trouble, as is already evident and will become still more so. May God restrain Satan and save us from such a visitation! Amen.

#19, Jubilate, Second Sermon

The Result of No Faith
10. As if he wished to say: Had they believed on me, everything would already have been forgiven them, whatever sin they might have committed, for I know that they by nature cannot do otherwise. But because they will not receive me, neither believe that I can help them, this it is that will condemn them. Therefore, God will at the final judgment pass a sentence like this on them: Behold, thou wast in sin and couldst not free thyself from it, still I did not on this account wish to condemn thee, for I sent my only begotten Son to thee and intended to give thee a Savior, in order that he might take the sin from thee. Him thou didst not receive. Therefore, on this account alone, thou wilt be condemned, because thou hast not Christ.
Cantate, First Sermon

Righteousness Is Faith
26. These are the three parts we have in this Gospel lesson: Sin is unbelief; righteousness is faith; the judgment is the holy cross. Therefore give heed and learn to consider everything that is without the Spirit as nothing and as condemned, and afterwards be prepared for the holy cross that thou must suffer on account of it. Now follows in the Gospel further: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth.”
Cantate, First Sermon

Unbelief – Dragon’s Tail
24. Lo, how the dragon’s tail of the devil and all hell must follow unbelief!
The reason is, that he who does not believe in Christ, has already turned away from God and quite separated himself from him. Therefore he cannot have the Holy Spirit, nor originate good thoughts, nor have a true, hearty pleasure in living according to God’s will; notwithstanding he may outwardly assume a different appearance, like a hypocrite, and act so as not to be rebuked or chastised. Just like a bad, ill-behaved servant, who is inimical to his master, and does what he hates to do, only because he is compelled, and as opportunity arises, does evil. Such are the beautiful, precious fruits, produced by this fountain and stem, if Christ is not accepted and heard as the Savior, presented to us by God in order to blot out our sin and to take from us God’s wrath.
Cantate, Third Sermon

Papal Methods, Adopted by Lutheran Apostates
68. Truly, that would be a fine church, which could arrogate to itself the power, as the Antichristian church of the pope does, to teach contrary to Christ whatever it wished, and to change his ordinances, and then would prove and confirm it with this saying: “I have yet many things to say unto you.” Whereas he says distinctly of the Holy Spirit, and so puts limit and measure upon him, that the Holy Spirit shall glorify Christ and not speak from himself, but take and proclaim of his own, that is, of that which is the Word and command of Christ. Therefore the company that teaches otherwise, cannot be from the Holy Spirit, nor the church of Christ, but must be the sect of the hateful devil.
Cantate, Third Sermon

Prating Is No Prayer
Often have I admonished that we should persevere in prayer, for there is great need of it. Since the outward prating and muttering of prayer is done away with, we no longer pray in any way. This is a good indication that we heretofore, notwithstanding our many prayers, never prayed.
#1, Rogate Sunday

Foundation of Prayer
3. So God himself now founds our prayer upon his promise and thereby encourages us to pray. If it were not for this promise, who would have the courage to pray? We have hitherto resorted to many ways of preparing ourselves to pray — ways with which the books are filled; but if you wish to be well prepared, take the promise and lay hold of God with it. Then your courage and desire to pray will soon grow, which courage you will never otherwise get. For “those who pray without God’s promise, imagine in themselves how angry God is, whom they wish to propitiate by means of their prayers. Without faith in the promise, there is then, neither courage nor desire to pray, but mere uncertain delusion and a melancholy spirit; there is, therefore, no hearing of prayers, and both prayer and labor are lost.
Rogate,

Faith the Foundation of Prayer
5. The second requisite of true prayer, following that of God’s promise, is faith — that we believe the promise is true, and do not doubt that God will give what he promises. For the words of the promise require faith. But faith is a firm, undoubting confidence in God’s promise that it is true; as James says: “But if any of you lacketh wisdom, let him ask of God, who giveth to all liberally and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him. But let him ask in faith, nothing doubting: for he that doubteth is like the surge of the sea driven by the wind and tossed. For let not that man think that he shall receive anything of the Lord.” James 1:5-7. Moreover, he who doubts and yet prays, tempts God; for he doubts in respect to God’s will and grace. Therefore, his prayer is nothing and he gropes after God like the blind for the wall. John also speaks of this assurance of faith in 1 John 5:14-15: “And this is the boldness which we have toward him, that, if we ask anything according to his will, he heareth: and if we know that he heareth us whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions which we have asked of him.” John describes with these words how a truly believing heart is disposed in prayer, namely, that it is concerned about nothing else than that its prayer be heard, knowing that it has even then obtained its petition. That is also true. Such faith and definite assurance, however, the Holy Spirit must impart; therefore, without the Holy Spirit, surely no prayer will be offered.
Rogate

Faith Swallows Up Sin, Unbelief Cannot Remain with Unbelief
12. Now, place the two side by side, and you can rightly conclude: Where there is faith, there cannot be so many sins, but they will surely be swallowed up and exterminated by faith; where there is unbelief, you will never be able to do good works enough to blot out the least sin. Little, therefore as sin can stand in the presence of faith, so little can good works abide with unbelief. Therefore, nothing is needed, in order to do good works, but faith; and nothing more is required, in order to do sin and evil works, than unbelief. Thus it follows that he who believes has no sin and does nothing but good works; on the other hand, he who does not believe, verily, does no good work, but all he does is sin.

Faith Makes  Christ as Our Own Treasure
13. Therefore I say, however, you cannot have committed so many sins, neither is Satan such an invincible enemy of yours, but that all is taken away and forgiven as soon as you begin to believe. For through faith you have Christ as your own treasure, who was given to you for the very purpose of taking away sin; and who will be so bold as to condemn Christ?
Ascension,

Energy in the Ascension
24. We must, therefore, conceive of his ascension and Lordship as something active, energetic and continuous, and must not imagine that he sits above while we hold the reins of government down here. Nay, he ascended up thither for the reason that there he can best do his work and exercise dominion. Had he remained upon earth in visible form, before the people, he could not have wrought so effectually, for all the people could not have been with him and heard him. Therefore, he inaugurated an expedient which made it possible for him to be in touch with all and reign in all, to preach to all and be heard by all, and to be with all. Therefore, beware lest you imagine within yourself that he has gone, and now is far away from us. The very opposite is true: While he was on earth, he was far away from us; now he is very near.
Ascension

Where Is Christ?
Hence, he who would be freed from sin and delivered from Satan and death, must come thither where Christ is. Now, where is he? He is here with us, and for this purpose did he sit down in heaven, that he might be near unto us. Thus, we are with him up there, and he is with us down here. Through the word he comes down, and through faith we ascend up.

34. So, we see everywhere in the Scriptures that faith is such an unspeakably great thing that we can never preach about it sufficiently nor reach it with words. It cannot be heard and seen, therefore it must be believed. Such is the nature of faith that it feels nothing at all, but merely follows the words which it hears, and clings to them. If you believe, you have; if you believe not, you have not. In this wise must we understand this article of faith, that Christ is ascended into heaven and sitteth at the right hand of God.
Ascension

The Faith of the Apostles
6. To sum up all: We should expose and reprove what is wrong, and exercise truth and love toward everybody; we should be plain-spoken, not letting ourselves be silenced, for none of us, since we are flesh and blood, will so live as to be found without blame in all things. I in this, you in that. We all see, that even the apostles were lacking in the chief things yet they were cornerstones, the foundations and the very best part of Christendom.

7. But let no one think that the apostles were altogether unbelieving; they believed what was written in the Law and the prophets, although their faith was not yet perfect. There was a faith there and yet no faith; they did not yet believe all things, although they believed that God created heaven and earth, and was the Maker of every creature. So the apostles were not altogether without faith, for they had faith in part. Faith is a thing that always grows. It is with faith as with a man who is ill and begins to get well — is increasing in strength. Therefore the Lord shows where they did not believe, and what they lacked; it was that they did not believe the resurrection of Christ from the dead. Although they believed the other things, they were still lacking in this. I hold that they believed that they had a gracious God. Yet this was not enough; they must believe also the resurrection of Christ. The Lord upbraided them with their unbelief, reproved them and said that in spite of all they had seen, they were not believing, they still lacked in a certain article of faith, namely the article on the resurrection. Hence Christ’s words to them at the Last Supper: “Ye believe in God, believe also in me.” John 14:1.
Ascension, Second Sermon

God and Man
But let us thank the Father for ordering it as he has, and placing between us one who is God and equal with God, and also man, on a level with man; for we are human and he is God. Where God and man oppose each other, man meets with instant destruction, for he cannot stand against God. God has intervened by placing as mediator one who is alike true God and true man. Through him we are to come to the Father; with the price we can pay nothing is accomplished.

Luther's Sermons - Progress Report

Volume 1 of Luther's Sermons is available. Amazon delayed it a bit, but the book is now available in full-color, in the bargain edition, and as a Kindle e-book.

Volume 2 is being prepared by the finishing editor, Janie Sullivan, who gets it ready for Amazon and Kindle.

Volume 3 is almost ready for the finishing editor, so I will be working on Volume 4 very soon. You will know when I have done Volume 3, because I will post the basic list of gems from that volume.

I am sending some books out now, but I will send more when I can send two at a time, Volumes 1 and 2, since shipping is almost the same.

Let me know if you cannot wait for Volume 1. The retail prices are much higher than the author's price, so I would rather send you books at the author's price. Kindle prices are the same for everyone.

As often happens, I gave the proof copy to our visitors, so I just bought a copy for myself.

Luther on Unbelief - Why Did He Not Praise UOJ's UnFaith Forgiveness?

Cantate - Third Sermon - Luther's Sermons, Lenker edition

9. Now what does such preaching call for? It calls for this, that I believe in it, for in no other way can I apprehend it. If you write it in a book, it will be of no use to any man, though you indulge in much thinking about it. Again, you may preach and speak about it, or hear it; it will be to no purpose. You must believe it and confidently rely upon it that the thing is as the Gospel says, that not your works but the Lord Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection takes away your sin and death. This you cannot attain to except by faith.

10. Again, Christ says: “He that disbelieveth,” even though he be baptized, “shall be damned.” These words, too, you must allow to remain just as they are. For he does not say thus: He that disbelieves and does evil works besides; but, without any varnish he says: If thou hadst the chastity of all virgins, the sufferings of all martyrs, and, to be concise, if thou hadst all the works that ever were done by all the saints — if thou hadst all these in a heap, yet, if faith were lacking, all would be lost.

Ascension Sermon, Vol 3, Luther's Sermons

The Word, which is called the Word of Christ, must be the rule and touchstone by which the Church is to be discerned and by which it must govern itself. There must be a certain rule by which the Church shall measure its conduct. It will not do for individuals to formulate their own ideas of conduct, act accordingly, and then say that the Church is led by the Holy Spirit.

Chemnitz on Creative Writing in Theology

Here is a passage from Martin Chemnitz' Loci Theologici in the section about special cautions or reminders when talking about the teachings of the Church.

"Finally, we must note which methods of speaking the church has accepted in the case of an individual locus, and why and with what rationale it rejected other methods so that we do not carelessly, out of a foolish love of novelty, depart from the proper language of the church. For pious people consider it proper to speak in harmony with the church for the sake of peace. Heedless change either produces errors or division. And often dangerous errors are strewn along the way, since many people have grown sick of the 'fisherman's simplicity' of the Holy Spirit and have introduced error under the cover of some ornate and elegant new method of speaking."

***

GJ - I especially like Chemnitz' phrase - the fisherman's simplicity of the Holy Spirit. Almost all of modern theology - and the posturing on blogs - seems to devoted to showing how creative the writer is, how elegant, how far beyond the basics of the Word of God.

Look at the UOJ statement from Ed Preuss, who became a major figure in Roman Catholicism -

Flowery? You bet. Faithful to the Scriptures? Hardly.

KJV Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves. 16 Ye shall know them by their fruits. Do men gather grapes of thorns, or figs of thistles? 17 Even so every good tree bringeth forth good fruit; but a corrupt tree bringeth forth evil fruit. 18 A good tree cannot bring forth evil fruit, neither can a corrupt tree bring forth good fruit. 19 Every tree that bringeth not forth good fruit is hewn down, and cast into the fire. 20 Wherefore by their fruits ye shall know them.

21 Not every one that saith unto me, Lord, Lord, shall enter into the kingdom of heaven; but he that doeth the will of my Father which is in heaven. 22 Many will say to me in that day, Lord, Lord, have we not prophesied in thy name? and in thy name have cast out devils? and in thy name done many wonderful works? 23 And then will I profess unto them, I never knew you: depart from me, ye that work iniquity.

Eighth Sunday After Trinity

Lord God, heavenly Father, we most heartily thank Thee that Thou hast caused us to come to the knowledge of Thy word. We pray Thee: graciously keep us steadfast in this knowledge unto death, that we may obtain eternal life; send us now and ever pious pastors, who faithfully preach Thy word, without offense or false doctrine, and grant them long life. Defend us from all false teachings, and frustrate Thou the counsels of all such as pervert Thy word, who come to us in sheep's clothing, but are inwardly ravening wolves, that Thy true Church may evermore be established among us, and be defended and preserved from such false teachers, through Jesus Christ, Thy Son, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Bearing Good Fruit

KJV Matthew 7:15 Beware of false prophets, which come to you in sheep's clothing, but inwardly they are ravening wolves.

When Luther preached on this topic, he suggested ending every sermon with a warning against false teachers, because this warning is at the end of the Sermon on the Mount.

Jesus' teaching might be divided into two categories -

  1. Illustrations from His Creation,
  2. Illustrations based on human nature - like the Prodigal Son.
This is quite arbitrary, but I have been struck by the ways in which the Savior connected His teaching to vivid pictures. They are impossible to forget, so phrases like "a wolf in sheep's clothing" and "a prodigal son" are common in everyday life.

Below - the unrepentant drug addict and fraudster who spoke to the Thrivent convention, to inspire them no doubt, is called The Wolf of Wall Street.

Belfort's publicity photo omits the fact that this money
was stolen from investors through fraud.

Confession Means a Positive Message with a Negation
One of the great seductions of the modern age is thinking we can have a positive message without warnings. Everyone is trained against being "judgmental" and "upsetting others." If we listen closely to these people who admonish us so often, they are always condemning others and upsetting people for being wrong about burning coal, global warming, or other issues.

The Savior and the Confessions have this in common - teaching the truth and warning against error. The Reformation did begin because Luther discovered the Gospel. In fact, he had a lot of help from others, including his advisor, Staupitz. Luther was different in that he said, "If this is true, then the Church is teaching error." That sparked the Reformation, separating the good from the bad, as Paul urged - there must be divisions to prove what is good.

The Institutional Error
Luther warned his followers not to compare the other guys with their own guys. He said, "We have the same problems." This invariable leads to denouncing the scandals of the other side while hiding the scandals of the feature sect of the day.  Or there might be a comparison based on trivia, such as the common cup versus individual cups; kneeling; high church or low church.

Luther taught the Word of God, not the institution. The Book of Concord is devoid of institutional claims and very light on issues concerning polity or organization. The truth of the Scriptures will sort those things out. Institutional comparisons do not.

Today's world of Lutheranism is more like the Animal Farm, by Orwell, where we learn that - in spite of all the claims - the animal leaders are working with the hated humans, and selling their fellow animals down the river, like poor Snowball. Picture all the speeches and official pronouncements against ELCA and then all the meetings and joint projects with ELCA. It is the same story. We drove 100 miles to Luther Seminary and looked up the facts in the insurance magazines and published the names. My wife found the articles and said, "I've got you, Bob, you fat little liar." We tracked down another case and a synodical spy asked, "How did you know?" When told, she said, "You drove all the way there and looked it up?" The first example made the insurance companies AAL/LB (now Thrivent) go silent on LCMS-W/ELS cooperation with ELCA. The second example led to a certain amount of revenge. No gratitude.

Sheep's Clothing
The first issue concerns the false teacher pretending to be an innocent lamb while teaching against the Word of God. A good example comes from the founder of Church Growth, who got people to say, "God wants His Church to grow." That seems like an indestructible foundation, but the Scriptures teach that God wants people to be faithful to His Word and trust in the Word.

The statistical model is so evident. I just learned that WELS allows people to look up every parish and see the statistics graphed for that congregation - worship and membership. Some are downhill slides and some are ski-jumps. But what does that matter? It is an entirely false way to look at the Gospel, going back to Church Growth and McGavran. What makes us have more members? Popcorn and soda in church? Let's do it.

Paul also warned against the wolves, from outside and from within:
Thus St. Paul also did, Acts 20:28-31, when he was about to depart from Ephesus, among other things, he said: “Take heed unto yourselves, and to all the flock, in which the Holy Spirit hath made you bishops, to feed the church of the Lord which he purchased with his own blood. I know that after my departing grievous wolves shall enter in among you, not sparing the flock; and from among your own selves shall men arise, speaking perverse things, to draw away the disciples after them. Wherefore watch ye, remembering that by the space of three years I ceased not to admonish every one night and day with tears.”

There are many historical examples of this, because once the congregations build up with the Gospel Word, and bear fruit, others come in who want the benefits for themselves without the labor or sacrifice. The apostates always gather where the money is, so an endowment fund set up by the faithful will prove to be a moral hazard from that time on, attracting those who want the Benjies for themselves, but not the cross. Our friend says that at work, the employees explain all the problems of the day with - "It's all about the Benjies." (the money)

Paul had false teachers following him to take away congregations they did not establish, attacking Paul while praising themselves.

5. Thus it will come to pass also among us. God be praised, we and others have the Gospel in greater purity and abundance than at any time since the days of the Apostles. But when we and those who now assist to promote it are gathered to our fathers, you will have false teachers enough, as many have already commenced and they already bestir themselves. And blessed are they who are diligently on their guard according to this Gospel and believe not every wind of doctrine, but remain steadfast in what they have learned. This Christ first teaches here with the words: “Beware,” be warned, as if to say: you will most certainly have to contend with false teachers.

After the death of Luther, the Evangelicals fell into disputes and errors, so great that they realized a need for doctrinal agreement. That gradually, slowly developed into the Formula of Concord and the Book of Concord, 1580, 17 years after his death. Now there is not even the slightest effort to correct the wrongs of Fuller's Church Growth or ELCA's attacks on the Faith. One can wonder if that will ever happen at all, but I think the Lutheran Church is like Mt. St. Helen's. One day an explosion will mean a new landscape. But that is only a guess.

I see this in our yard all the time. Some plants appear to be horrible weeds, but prove to be useful and good when they flower and fruit - Poke is a good example. Others seem harmless, like a little Bermuda grass, but take over with stupendous growth, choking worthwhile flowers and plants.

One plant, growing tall and strong, proved to be a thistle. I was never going to get anything from that six-footer, no matter how long I waited. Weeds are prolific but sterile. They do not produce anything worthwhile. How many say, "Look at those weeds! That is great. You have so many weeds. How do you get such lush growth?"

On the other hand, this sermon reminds us that Gospel fruits grow from the Gospel. There we do not need to emphasize the fruits, which grow from the Spirit in the Gospel Word. Instead, we need to rely on the Gospel for those fruits.

Any gardener would laugh at making something happen to a plant, though we try from time to time. On the contrary, a wise gardener improves and protects the soil, the foundation for what the plant achieves. A Creation gardener does not do much that is complicated, because God takes care of the intricacies of His own Creation. I pulled up a large pile of crabgrass (a grain, not a weed). Some of the seeds may have matured. I did not care. I put that pile under the Crepe Myrtle, to feed the soil. After that point, my work is done. I pile food on the ground beneath the myrtle and the soil creatures complete the feeding process. Large piles of leaves, grass, and mulch have disappeared beneath the plant. Enormous blooms have popped out of the branches, followed by big seeds the Cardinals love to eat.

Likewise, the teaching of John's Gospel, just as it written, without speculation or salesmanship, is enough to produce Gospel fruit. The Gospel itself protects the believer against false doctrine, leaving very little room for competition. Norma Boeckler's garden is all flowers, not that weeds never appear. But the flowers exclude most of the weeds by their vitality.

The vitality of the Gospel displaces false doctrine a large part of the time. I learned the Means of Grace early but not appreciate how much that was hated and set aside. Then, when it was despised and ignored, I could see how strange and bizarre the false claims were. However, to refute those claims I had to know the errors better than they did - and to teach the unity of the Means of Grace, chapter and verse.

Opposition is good because that provokes us to study when we would false asleep if left alone unbothered, only enjoying the benefits and not the cross.

So one test is - what are we studying? Here are some basic warnings.
  • Calvinists deny the Means of Grace and mock the Sacraments. I do not know what I can learn from them, because they begin in error. C. S. Lewis has some clever comments, but he is a kind of Universalist. so that wars against him as a Christian leader.
  • Pentecostals largely hate infant baptism. I had one walk out of the room when I discussed the topic, her lips pursed in anger. One Baptist professor said to me, "You're a Lutheran, so you have to believe in infant faith." The true Pentecostals are Lutherans who teach the Holy Spirit working on through the Word. The true Baptists are those who know the power of the sacrament to be in the Word - which means rebirth, renewal, washing, forgiveness.
  • Roman Catholics intend to awe people with their pageantry in worship, and they do that well, even in poor, out of the way churches. But as long as they require works for salvation, teach Purgatory, and other such dogma, they should not attract anyone faithful to the Word.
Many who call themselves Lutheran are a mixture of these three, flitting from one dogma to another, like hummingbirds or butterflies. If they mock the Book of Concord, as many do, they are not Lutheran. If they make fun of Luther, they obviously have not read Luther. Those who do read Luther do not have to prove it. Others, who like Luther quips, are no more Lutheran than Calvin, who read Luther and supposedly agreed with the Augsburg Confession.

7. When God gives us his Word, his gifts and Spirit, it is not his will that we should be lazy, sleepy and idle. For if you have the true Word and its true meaning, the world will attack you on one side, and the devil will attempt to tear you from it on the other, not only by means of worldly tyrants who persecute the Word with the sword; but also by means of our own reason and the wisest people in the world. Thus God desires to develop you by his Word, and to give the Holy Spirit whom he has bestowed upon you something to do, so that you may learn that God’s wisdom is wiser than the world’s wisdom, that God’s strength is stronger than the strength and power of the world, which you will not learn unless you pass through this conflict with false teachers.

8. Wherever he permits the devil to create factions, he would thus stir you up, and say: Defend yourself, lay hold of the Word, and learn to experience God’s wisdom and power against the wisdom of the world and the lies of satan. Thus the strength and wisdom of God’s Word will appear, that you may learn that it is not to be conquered with power and wisdom; but it conquers, and puts to shame all power, cunning and wisdom opposed to it.

This is one reason why God permits factions and sects among us, who enter in as it were edgewise, as though they were beneficial and served to the end that the Word, the truth and Spirit prove themselves to be better and plainer; however aside from this factions and sects serve no good purpose.

I know a couple that makes a point of reading Lutheran material as part of their Sunday routine. One would do well to have a good translation - KJV or KJV21 - and study the two Catechisms, the Augsburg Confession, and the Apology.

If Lutherans across the US did that, they would have a gradual, powerful, national renewal. More importantly, each individual would have the Word of God as a powerful shield and weapon against error, plus the comfort of the Gospel of grace.

Jesus teaches here that these basics cannot bear evil fruit, just as evil trees cannot bear good fruit. There are people who like to identify with the wilderness, so they taste various things they find when going through the woods. Some of them look good but are either powerful irritants, enough to put someone in the hospital, or even worse, deadly poisons. I had a beautiful green plant growing in my future hosta garden. I had planted a row of seeds from that plant family, so I thought it was one of those, or two of those as it developed. But it grew so big and looked so impressive that I had to identify it. That was Poison Hemlock, part of the large, insect-friendly carrot-dill family. Many plants in that family are great to grow and to enjoy. Others are not. My gardening friend said, "Just don't eat it," but I dug it out
instead.

The sad truth is that few believe the positive message from Jesus at the end of His Sermon on the Mount - it is impossible to broadcast the Word of God and be without good results. Opposition tells us that the Word threatens the opponents, no matter how deeply they are dug in - district presidents, synod presidents, professors, council members, local clergy. But in the midst of that opposition, the Gospel tree will grow and bear fruit in many lives.

I had weeds take advantage of heavy rains and brilliant sunshine. In the midst of this Japanese beetles invaded every rose. I was ready to order a Caterpillar tractor from Peoria. But then the roses began blooming again, as they always do.

19. Hence the saying is true, the holy Scriptures are a book for heretics, that is, they are a book to which heretics most of all lay claim. For they misuse no other book so much, yea, they do not know any other worthy of praise, and no heresy was ever so wicked or gross, that did not attempt to strengthen itself and recommend itself by the use of the Scriptures. Just as a man might say: God is the God of all rogues and rascals, because the largest crowd in the world take his part. Not because their rascality comes from God or is acceptable to him, but because they thus take his holy name in vain. So then, the holy Scriptures must be a heretic’s book, not that the book is to blame, but because of these rogues who so shamefully misuse it.

In like manner people are accustomed to say in the proverb: All misfortune begins in God’s name. This is also true. Well, you say, then I will be careful not to make use of God’s name. What is that you utter? How can you blame the name, that is given in order that I might be saved? He will indeed find and punish these rogues and rascals. Well, then, the Bible is a heretic’s book, but I will not throw it away on that account; on the contrary, I will study and read it much more, so that I may know how to avoid the misuse of it.

20. Then let every one be prepared and armed, that he may not so easily allow himself to be misled by the brilliant pretensions of false teachers, although they at the time quote the Scriptures. For within certainly lie concealed ravenous wolves. And when you think they will feed and satisfy your soul, then they rend you, murder and devour you. But no one will so readily judge or decide this matter, except with spiritual eyes. The common man and the rabble cannot, for the largest multitude despise the Gospel and are unthankful, while the smallest flock receive it and can appreciate it.

One reader said, "I wish I had known these insights in my job. I had the same experiences of opposition." That is the sad part. We only learn those things by experience, reading, and worship. They are not intuitive but seem to oppose common sense. However, when we recognize how the world is organized by evil and for evil, God's grace existing in islands here and there - that is miraculous and shows His power.
