Efficacy - One Word To Cure the Ills of Christendom - Romans 10 and Isaiah 55. "How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?"

The bankrupt seminaries of all denominations have failed to grasp and to teach two major sections of the Scriptures. Both passages teach the efficacy of the Word of God, one in Isaiah 55, the other in Romans 10. Both passages are so clear than no one can ignore the clear message - everything accomplished by the Christian Faith comes from the exclusive effectiveness of God's Word.

This effect comes from 

• reading, 
• hearing, and 
• remembering the Scriptures.

Are popcorn, peanuts, soda, and coffee effective? Then why use these lures to make worship appealing? The crowds who followed Jesus into the desert ignored their peril because His Word was divine in authority, not like the teaching of the scribes and Pharisees. They were fed miraculously because they had so much faith in the Son of God. 

The Means of Grace Chapters

The connection between Romans 10 and Isaiah 53 is also significant. Several terms come up, teaching the same concept. Faith only comes from hearing the Word, also called the Rumor or the Report.

For centuries, Isaiah 53 meant very little. Rabbinic literature had trouble with a Suffering Servant. The disciples were initially deaf to the three predictions of the suffering Jesus and His resurrection. But read or hear Isaiah 53 and Romans 10 together - The report of Jesus' suffering, death, and resurrection creates faith in Him.

That is why we read the Scriptures to newborns when they are baptized. They listen and pay close attention to everything. That is why it is so good to hand a newborn to a stranger wearing a robe - instant in waking up and getting attention, plus crying. The doubters say, "A newborn cannot have faith. Wait until he is 6 years old, or 8, or 12." But the baby has faith in his mother and becomes peaceful and happy in her arms, from her whispers. The Word which created everything in the universe (John 1:3) also plants Gospel faith in the heart of the infant.

Reject Faith in the Scriptures

Faith in Jesus Christ is almost completely gone among the Lutheran synods, worshiping themselves and praising Holy Mother Synod. ELCA is farthest out simply by embracing every error of our time. The ELS-WELS-LCMS-CLC-ELDONUT sects have the same hardness of heart, directly from clinging to CFW Walther, BA, and his notorious repetition of Objective Faithless Justification.

Consider the irony - Jim Heiser, searching for his bishop's mitre, united with the ELS and WELS to deliver one more Waltherian sect into this world. They formed the Luther-lite Confessional Synod, which adored Objective Faithless Justification. Later, without blushing, they switched.

Another irony - the Lutheran sects oppose Luther and the Reformation.

And - they love every Bible but the KJV.

And - they are failing just as fast as the mainline sects because they have the same rationalistic, works-righteousness.

The sects have no power because they do not recognize the efficacy of God's Word.

One pastor stopped talking to me because this is a translation of Knapp, ignoring the fact that the Calvinist translator - a dominant Calvinist in his time - used these soon-to-be-popular terms. His sect will soon be "only a footnote in the history of Lutheranism."

Some call Romans 10 the Means of Grace chapter, like Isaiah 55. 

The ακοη is translated as hearing, and acoustics come from the Greek word. But does it simply mean hearing?

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

16 αλλ ου παντες υπηκουσαν τω ευαγγελιω ησαιας γαρ λεγει κυριε τις επιστευσεν τη ακοη ημων

If we expand the meaning of ακοη, we could say 
"hearing the Report," or
"hearing the Gospel sermon," or
"hearing the Atonement taught."

The Report verse opens Isaiah 53 -

Isaiah 53 Who hath believed our report? and to whom is the arm of the Lord revealed?

ΚΥΡΙΕ, τίς ἐπίστευσε τῇ ἀκοῇ ἡμῶν...LXX - Greek Old Testament

2 For he shall grow up before him as a tender plant, and as a root out of a dry ground: he hath no form nor comeliness; and when we shall see him, there is no beauty that we should desire him.

Reading Isaiah 53 and the verses just before that chapter, we can see that this is the Gospel of the Old Testament, a precise description of the death of Jesus and the reason for that death.

Since Paul is quoting Isaiah 53, the word for hearing is really meant to include that chapter as the Report. In fact, the New Testament reproduces most of Isaiah 53 if all the quotations are collected. Isaiah 53 is central to NT doctrine and serves as the bedrock foundation of evangelism - it was all revealed centuries before. 

This is why serious students need basic NT Greek, because ακοη is translated variously as:

• News, Matthew 4:24
• Hearing, Matthew 13:14
• Fame, Matthew 14:1
• Rumor, Matthew 24:6
• Hearing, Luke 7:1
• Report, Romans 10:16
• Hearing, Romans 10:17

Romans 10:15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

Sent is a key verb in the Gospel of John, describing Jesus as sent from the Father. Jesus sending the disciples is directly related to the Father sending the Son.

The Gospel of Peace is not unilateral disarmament, but the righteousness of faith, forgiveness, which gives peace to those who believe the Report.

13 For whosoever shall call upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Salvation comes from calling on the Lord, the result of believing the Report. The word for hearing is the verb form that forms the climax of the argument - ακοη.

Believing is not the work of man, but the gift of God. Those who constantly, foolishly talk about faith as a work of man are ignorant of Jesus' teaching in John -

John 6:28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.

Note that Jesus defined the Holy Spirit revealing sin as not believing on Him. John 16:8ff.

John 16:8 And when He [GJ - the Holy Spirit, preaching through the Word] is come, He will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment:9 Of sin, because they believe not on He;

There is no shame in believing the Gospel of Christ

Romans 10: 11 For the Scripture saith, Whosoever believeth on Him shall not be ashamed.

12 For there is no difference between the Jew and the Greek: for the same Lord over all is rich unto all that call upon Him.

As taught in the Reformation, the righteousness of works - which Paul described so eloquently - must be replaced by the righteousness of faith.

Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The Word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the Word of faith, which we preach;

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised Him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

Paul preached the Word of faith, a fact never disclosed by the rabid Objective Justification faction. Everything afterwards in Romans 10 is perfectly in harmony with these two verses.

Nothing in Paul's inspired writing leads the reader to imagine that the world was justified, declared righteous, absolved of all sin - when Jesus rose from the dead. 

Citing Romans 4:25 for their Objective Justification (Stephan/Walther/Rambach) is proof that the 1932 LCMS convention was a parliament of idiots. The continued abuse of Romans 4:25 proves that nothing is too dumb for false teachers to promote.

Faith Comes from the Sermon - The Report

Romans 10 16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report?

People can easily have the wrong impression when they hear various words used in Christianity, especially when people choose to warp and distort their meaning. One of the best ways to get a good view of the truth comes from comparing various passages. 

Shining the Light on Dark Passages

This is one instance when a debated term is distorted because of a lack of comparisons. A time-tested principle is that we find the truth by casting light (from bright, easy to understand passages) on "dark" (hard to understand) passages.

That does not mean the Bible is hard to understand for anyone, but people make the plain Word of God obscure by all their arguments and hair-splitting. They may start with their experts and use that as the foundation of truth and ignore the only foundation is the Word itself.

False Ideas

This is an important topic because of the way "faith" is approached by many who are false teachers or poorly informed. The bad information begins with the assumption that faith is a decision made by man, an act of the will.

Another error comes from the source of faith, which they imagine comes from making the Gospel appealing, attractive, or relevant. Remember the movie theater advertising their service as "real, relevant, and relational?" That is typical of Calvinism and its offshoots.

Some will say, "No, do not criticize error!" But Jesus and Paul were especially pointed in their rejection of false doctrine, and so is the seldom-read Book of Concord and the never-read Apology of the Book of Concord.

So we get at the Biblical truth by rejecting false claims of others, in this case, about faith.

Many Places to Begin

There are many places to begin, but I am especially fond of Isaiah 53, which is the Old Testament Gospel. If anything, this chapter (hated by liberals) gives the basic Gospel so clearly that one cannot separate the words of this short chapter from the actual atoning death of Jesus about 1,000 years later.

I was reminded of this when working on the Greek lesson for tonight. The connection is often made, following Paul, with Isaiah 53 and Romans 10 (the Means of Grace chapter in Romans). 

The key word can be translated "hearing" or "report." Sometimes it is "rumor" in English, but we consider rumors to be false or hard to verify. The word comes from the word for hearing, and that makes sense. Very little was read in ancient days. The Scriptures were heard in worship, memorized, and also taught in sermons. 

Luther often emphasized faith and how it develops in people. They do not make a decision. It is not an act of human will. Faith is the result of hearing the Gospel, the Holy Spirit at work in the Word, always effective in converting and hardening.

Isaiah 53 is a marker for all that would follow, an usual passage in a major book for Jews and those who sought truth in monotheism. Educated people could read the Old Testament Gospel easily in Greek, in the Septuagint.

The report in Isaiah is the Atonement message of the Messiah dying for the sins of the world. It is the Gospel in every sense of the word - God declaring a solution for sin and death, before anyone could imagine or ask for such a measure. This Gospel creates faith, which is why we are called "new creations" or "new creatures" by Paul.

I enjoy the contradictions in "scientific" gardening. They run out of terms for all the beneficial life-forms in the garden, so they say "creatures" as in something created. They are never called "evolutes" - something that evolved. Or they marvel about the intricacies and balance of "nature," without asking what that means.

The Gospel creates faith because it is the message of the Creating Word and the message about the Creating Word.

This is promised by the Gospel, and is even in the Ten Commandments:

Respecting God's Word always brings good results - and the cross.

The benefits are many and last multiple generations. 

The Gospel converts children and changes their lives forever. 

The Gospel converts adults with more difficulty, because they develop habits and attitudes that resist God's Word. No one can tell how much time, and those who resist the most may end up the most productive (Paul, Augustine).

The Gospel produces many fruits in the lives of believers, and that is not the result of programs and plans but the Spirit at work in the Word.

The Scriptures and Confessions teach about the righteousness of faith, never about the righteousness of unfaith, yet the ELCA-LCMS-WELS-ELS-CLC leaders swoon over their own righteoussness of unfaith.

Oh-oh, the righteousness of faith is εκ πιστεως δικαιοσυνη, anarthrous, so it is more of a compound word, faith-righteousness. "But faith-rigteousness speaks this way..."

7 Or, Who shall descend into the deep? (that is, to bring up Christ again from the dead.)

8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach;

The Word is rema, which belongs to God. And Paul calls it το ρημα της πιστεως ο κηρυσσομεν - the Word of faith that we proclaim. I thought the Apostle Paul proclaimed the word of Unfaith. The paid shills of UOJ keep insisting on that, and JP Meyer is quoted in support of that dogma, in awe, in wonder, in a state of ecstasy.

9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

I thought Lutherans got rid of "if" statements! The liberal, modernistic theologians all say that an "if" statement is contrary to grace, which is where the herd of Walther donkeys congregate, around bankrupt Calvinism.

οτι εαν ομολογησης εν τω στοματι σου κυριον ιησουν - 

I see homiletics ομολογησης there, the art of preaching, but here it means if you (singular) confesses - like John the Baptist. the Fourth Gospel - "Objection, yer honor. This is second person singular, and we know the true dogma is Universal salvation first, you all, second plural. I studied Greek!" 

πιστευσης (2nd singular) εν τη καρδια σου οτι ο θεος αυτον ηγειρεν εκ νεκρων σωθηση (2nd singular)

Once again, this is second person singular, If you (singular) believe God raised Him from the dead, you (2nd singular) will be saved (2nd singular).

But this is always the righteousness of faith in the Scriptures.

Verses 11-13 are beautiful, clear, parallel statements that show what we believe is also what we call upon and confess out loud. So Paul asks a question and answers it with the Means of Grace, primarily preaching.

14 How then shall they call on him in whom they have not believed? and how shall they believe in him of whom they have not heard? and how shall they hear without a preacher?

Now we begin to smell the pot roast. For all these good things to happen, there must be a preacher, something like a town crier in the olden days.

15 And how shall they preach, except they be sent? as it is written, How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things!

16 But they have not all obeyed the gospel. For Esaias saith, Lord, who hath believed our report? τη ακοη ημων?

This report is the preaching of the Atonement in Isaiah 53, where this same term τη ακοη  is used in the Septuagint, the report heard.

That is certainly true - not all have obeyed. The robed resistance is firmly entrenched in the sewers of the "Lutheran" sects, which they call Synod Headquarters and Our Beloved Seminary and Our Mission Board.

Report is signficant, the center of the argument. But report is a bit weak for 

τη ακοη ημων - because report comes from the verb for hearing. Using our church terms, it is more like hearing the preached sermon.

17 So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the Word of God.

Forgivenes and salvation only come through individual faith. The Gospel is not Universal Forgiveness and Salvation without Faith - but the Atoning death of the Messiah for the sins of the world. The donkey-clowns of UOJ always say, "UOJ is not the Atonement." That is the only thing they can get right - everything else is the raucus braying of fools, ignorant fools who hate the Gospel, despise the Means of Grace, and abhor Luther.

 Fifty years of teaching false doctrine at Mordor makes one a saint whose precious ramblings must be reprinted and endorsed by Panning, lest they be lost to history.

Paul Revealed Why the UOJ Hive Cannot Grasp Justification by Faith - They Only Buzz and Sting

Many clergy slowly become unbelievers - and apostates - by allowing the weeds of Mammon and career advancement to choke and smother what little faith they had in the beginning. The result is not unlike a weed-choked plant, which still lives beneath the aggressive weed's foliage but produces no fruit.

This happens overtly in the WELS abusive sect, because every parson has to be a Kokomo cheerleader to exist. Just as publicly supporting Rauschenbusch was rewarded in the mainline denominations. so is bowing to the errors of JP Meyers and Sig Becker recompensed in WELS. The stupider the essay, the more likely the apostate will be teaching at The Sausage Factor in Mequon - where faith dies among the lies.

The process is subtler in the LCMS, because they no longer make an issue of UOJ. Being a Bronze Age Missourian, with heart-felt loyaty to F. Pieper, is no longer a selling point, now that the Bronzies are dead or retired.

Instead, the same effect is created when a pastor is punished for being fanatical about the Confessions (he actually reads them) or unionism - not wanting to march robed with ELCA women pastors. The entire ELCA-Thrivent-LWF-UN con game is really a victory for UOJ. No one can have any faith, discernment, or conscience left to work with any of those entities, let alone all four.

I can imagine the synodical responses:

"Do you recall that we voted overwhelmingly to continue work with ELCA? The synod convention - the ultimate authority, far more authoritative than the Scriptures?"

"If we don't spent all that Thrivent money, then ELCA will get it. Do you want that, you legalist?"

"We decided a long time ago that we can work with others in LWF to send relief to the poor in the Third World. I suppose that grieves you."

"What? You are in favor of malaria? I would love to tell all the dying masses that one."

But - as Grampaw used to say - "Lie down with dawgs, git up with fleas." The clergy who remain in the same stall with false teachers soon partake of the same Universal Salivation - thirsting for every god but the One True God. They handle the same warm asphalt that builds the road to perdition and think their hands are not stained and reeking.

Does St. Paul Contradict Himself?
The UOJ stylists have abandoned Romans 4:25 completely, because too many people opened their Bibles and read Romans 4:24. Sorry. Some of them ventured to read all of Romans 4 and saw that the theme of that chapter was not justification without faith, but Abraham counted as righteous because of faith. Instead of UOJ being as ancient as Stonehenge, it was re-discovered in Genesis in that citation about Abraham  - "he believed as it was counted as righteousness." Genesis 15:6

How can we believe that the Holy Spirit teaches justification by faith with utmost clarity in Romans 3 and 4, only to abandon that doctrine in favor of justification without faith in Romans 5 - if we only ignore Romans 5:1-2. The Mequon faculty is praying that you read Romans 5, minus the first two verses, with their guidance, of course.

Notify the NNIV committee, now meeting at the Gold Base of Scientology. They have a lot more additions and subtractions to make, in case people read past Romans 3.

Here is another major section of Paul's inspired writing that demolishes UOJ. For now I am skipping over their thread-bare rants about reconciliation and "the Lamb of God who takes away the sins of the world." I will get to them in a future post or two.

I would just like readers to consider Romans 10 and judge for themselves whether the dark shadowy dogmas of UOJ disappear completely in the bright light of that chapter.

Romans 10 follows Paul's lament in Romans 9 that his own Jewish people do not believe in Christ.

He disposed of righteousness through the Law and any other righteousness except the righteousness of faith. Note - there is no article in the Formula of Concord called Righteousness Without Faith, but there is a crucial article, III, on the Righteousness of Faith.

Romans 10 Brethren, my heart's desire and prayer to God for Israel is, that they might be saved.

2 For I bear them record that they have a zeal of God, but not according to knowledge.

3 For they being ignorant of God's righteousness, and going about to establish their own righteousness, have not submitted themselves unto the righteousness of God.

4 For Christ is the end of the law for righteousness to every one that believeth.

5 For Moses describeth the righteousness which is of the law, That the man which doeth those things shall live by them.

6 But the righteousness which is of faith speaketh on this wise, Say not in thine heart, Who shall ascend into heaven? (that is, to bring Christ down from above:)

This chapter clearly shows the Order of Salvation, in reverse. To put it in ABC order -

• Preachers must first be sent. As Luther emphasized, the pastoral office is the Preaching-Office, not the Entertainment-Office, not the Sheep-Counting-Office, not the Synod-PR-Office.
• The Gospel must be preached, because faith comes from hearing the proclaimed Word.
