Sunday Morning Mike Problem

I am sorry. I was so enthralled with everything technical that I did not ask if the mike needed its own power. Apparently it does, because neither mike worked for the service today.

Alec enjoyed seeing the mike lifted up as the culprit. No, I did not feel like tossing it out the window. This is a great adventure with a lot of possibilities for spreading the Word.

I will provide a make-up service in a day or two. Stay tuned.

We may also need to match the speed of my fiber optic with what the system should handle. We have a jet engine for internet speed (1000 megs) and the default setting was lower. That may have contributed to bad viewing, which can be adjusted.

Siberian Tiger Hosta and a New System for Broadcasting

I planted some tiny Hosta, the tender ones the bunnies love to eat. I put a plastic color around each one. They were white from being in the packing on the way, and started to form their stripes. I watered them with rainwater from the new rain barrel. Sassy supervised.

Today I put together the missing parts of the new live streaming system - HDMI camera, converter, mike, hardware encoder. I will do some checkups and talk to my guardian angel at RESI. They host the platform, mostly for churches, for live and stored videos.

This was really exciting, to put the puzzle together and have the little green and red lights come on. The way it works is counter-rational to me, but it is high quality, highly praised, and described fairly well on YouTube.

Choosing a Camera To Work with RESI - HDMI or SDI

We have two choices:

1. Use a HDMI/USB camera, at $299. That would need a converter (about $70) from HDMI to the RESI encoder.

2. SDI connects directly to the encoder and they cost more. I need to talk to RESI a bit about that.

"This is easily connected via USB or HDMI to your computer. Then you would use the included IR remote for control." (A vendor wrote that about the camera mentioned above.)

I welcome responses from the vast majority who know more about this than I do. I am not buying a camera until I have more understanding about what we need and what will work.

Something was wrong with the camera feed. I will talk to Resi tomorrow and if necessary get a different camera. 

They sounded like I had a toy camera, but we had an older weaker one for a decade. Everything changes.

We can still have the service when that is settled.

Two Alternatives to the Live Broadcast

At least two households have trouble getting the live worship service via Vimeo and the same might be true of RESI (going live soon). The new broadcasts assume more bandwidth than Ustream, so the new guys assume a raging torrent of 1s and 0s rather than shallow crick. (That is "creek" up north where people talk funny.)

Chasing the Technology Train - Fun, Fears, and Victory

Today was especially fun because I dedicated it primarily to broadcasting. The jigsaw puzzle includes a number of pieces, which now make sense. Sassy and I listened to a new presentation on what I need to know, what I need to use.

1. I have to have a better email set-up, because some have not reached the intended destination.

2. I will need to convert the WordPress Ichabod (not ready for prime time yet) to have a long-lasting place to store videos. We all know how reliable Google is! (Implied positive statement)

3. I will practice broadcasting, starting tomorrow. That will be displayed on this blog.

4. We have a library creation tool, which will be good for long-term, non-disappearing storage.

5. Captions are a low-cost option. I wonder if people like the idea. I always put captions on when I can (YouTube, etc) because I follow the content better.

6. I will be asking if you have been getting your emails. I will have a separate stored placed for them and hope the new set-up works well with group emails.

7. I will slow down books in favor of publishing more lectures on such topics as the KJV, books of the Bible, apostasy, Rome versus the Gospel, the Jesuits.

Live Streaming without the Blackouts and Better Music

I began looking for a replacement for Vimeo, which I am sure aims at the big budget customer. Their personal service is zilch. I landed on one good place, which is Apple only. OK.

Our two issues are blackouts and music, which comes down to the twirlies, those circles that signal delay or dropped signal. That will be true until fiber optic is 100.00% connected, but it can be overcome with software and hardware.

We don't always see twirlies, but they are part of Internet delays.

That is what RESI claims to do - hold the signal in a buffer and continue feeding it to homes. We have a very wide range of signal in our vast domain. Fortunately we have fiber optic here, so that gives us the speed to produce a good signal.

I have found RESI willing to discuss the problems and solve them. The price is close to our current charges from Vimeo and we may get a refund there. No matter, we need better personal and network service and that is possible. I met with them over the phone - group talk - and I will talk to a staffer tomorrow at 8 am.
