Deplorable Plants Have Their Adorable Qualities

Cute, but no, leave the soil alone as much as possible.

Even recently, I saw weeds as deplorable interlopers, taking water and sunshine from the choice, chosen plants.

Gabe Brown changed my attitude by saying, "Keep living roots in the soil as long as possible. They add energy."

Before I saw weeds as good potential for turning into compost when the life-giving sunlight was cut off. But now I am humbled by the reminder that every plant invites all of Creation to give and take, to bargain for nutrition (debris for bacteria and earthworms) and to receive digested nutrition from fungus. One plant is growing miles of root hairs and energizing billions of microbes. As Brown said, plant roots provide most of the organic matter in the soil. The goal of regenerative farmers is to put as much carbon into the soil as possible, so the buzz-words are:

  1. Carbon Cowboys
  2. Soil Food Web
  3. Organic
  4. Regenerative
  5. Cover Crops
  6. Composting
  7. Earthworms
  8. Teaming with Microbes
  9. Teaming with Fungi.

No one has borrowed Creation Gardening from me, but I am not going to trademark a name so obviously nicked from the Scriptures. Google or YouTube the terms above and plenty of good illustrations will follow.

How the Deplorables Became Adorable
When I see a plant growing where it should not be, it is the abomination of desolation. Here are some that converted my primordial anger into benevolent feelings.

Dandelions
They are herbs brought over. Birds use their seed fluff. In terms of soil health, they puncture the lower levels and bring up calcium. No more useless collecting of egg shells in the false hope that they will add calcium to the soil. I cut them for greens (extra nutritious salad) but let them grow otherwise. They do not spread outrageously, and if they did, their sunny yellow flowers are cheerful, not threatening.

Poke
The Poke plant can be 20 feet tall and opens up its fast-growing branches to reach out in every direction. Pokeweed is prepared as salad in the South, but that means boiling it first - because of toxins. And the berries are also toxic to us. But where is the sin in sincerely, as the Music Man asked.

Poke has devilishly deep roots and is perennial. That is a high energy plant doing the work that fancy, expensive plants won't do. Pokeberries are loved by 60+ species of birds and animals, so it is a living, breathing, soil-improving, free bird-feeder. Secondly, its tiny flowers attract beneficial insects, so it is actually protecting the roses.

Wild Strawberries
I always liked them as little red rubies growing in the grass and thriving under the trees, but they invaded the rose garden too. Then I repented of the evil I said against them. They may surround a rose, but they are living mulch that energizes the topsoil and attracts poopy birds at the same time. If the birds graze and fertilize at the same time, the soil is gaining.

 Sow Thistle is sowicked.

Sow Thistle
I saw this plant growing in the front yard, and let it grow. The young plant looked like a dandelion but not quite. As it grew larger, I saw the tiny bristles, which meant - thistles! Burn, destroy, hack, pull!

This weed was almost shoulder high when I dug it out, along with a few others. The wildest impulses could not get me to let big thistles grow in the yard. Nevertheless, the weed is definitely a soil energizer.

The seeds might have blown in from Almost Eden, where some soil berms are allowed to grow wild, an interesting lab in botany. Sassy and I look it over several times a week, for different reasons.

One way to use a half-grown thistle is to dig/pull it out and compost it. I throw the treasure behind the bushes, where sunlight is blocked, or into the compost pile, which is in the shade. A weed clump is packed with soil creatures, good soil, and plant material ready to decompose.

Dutch White Clover spreads by seed and by the roots.

I Liked These Before the Lawn-lovers Did
Clovers -
They build nitrogen in the soil, feed the bees, and lend a bubblegum fragrance to the air. I have Dutch White Clover in the lawn and gardens, but I also broadcast Crimson Clover in the Wild Garden. Crimson Clover can grow very large, even waist high.

More than a rock song by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts,
Crimson Clover is valued as a cover crop.

Little Lawn Weeds -
They seldom last long. The purplish mint weed covered vast areas of lawn in the area and invaded our little patch of grass in the back. A few weeks later, it disappeared.

Others bloom with tiny yellow, blue, or white flowers. They fade quickly but they feed the beneficial insects, which are tiny and need tiny flowers.

Using broad-leaf weed killer will wipe these out early and leave bare patches in the soil. If the lawn is near trees, the bare patches often remain open, making the top soil too hot and vulnerable to wind and water erosion.
Creeping Charlie. Many weeds annoy us
by cheerfully spreading, no matter what we do.
Most man-made treatments hurt the soil and ultimately
benefit the soil.

Jesus' Fine Gospel Requires Fine Students - Luther Against the UOJists

Jesus washes the disciples' feet,  by Norma Boeckler.

CANTATE - FOURTH SUNDAY AFTER EASTER

Text: John 16:5-15. But now I go unto him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? But because I have spoken these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Nevertheless I tell you the truth: It is expedient for you that I go away; for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I go, I will send him unto you. And he, when he is come, will convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: of sin, because they believe not on me; of righteousness, because I go to the Father, and ye behold me no more; of judgment, because the prince of this world hath been judged. I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, shall come, he shall guide you into all the truth; for he shall not speak from himself; but what things soever he shall hear, these shall he speak; and he shall declare unto you the things that are to come. He shall glorify me: for he shall take of mine, and shall declare it unto you. All things whatsoever the Father hath are mine; therefore said I, that he taketh of mine, and shall declare it unto you.

1. The meaning of this Gospel lesson we have also often heard elsewhere; the only trouble is, the words have not generally been understood to have the meaning of things with which we are familiar. Therefore we will explain it a little, in order that one may see that the same teaching is contained in these words, that is found in all the other Gospel lessons. It is a fine Gospel, but it also requires fine students. We will omit the first part and consider what the Lord says, that the Holy Spirit is to convict the world in respect of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment, and will see what the meaning of all this is.

2. In the first place, we see here that the world is accused of blindness and ignorance. All those who are without the Holy Spirit, however wise they may be in matters pertaining to the things of this world, are, before God, fools and blind. They do not like to hear this; and when they are told that their doings are of no account before God, it displeases them and makes them angry, because they insist that they are in possession of reason and the natural light, which God created in them. But what does this matter to us? There are the Scriptures and the Word of God plain and clear, that the Holy Spirit is to come to ‘convict the world, because it does not know what sin, righteousness and judgment are. Thus it is determined, there it stands; let be angry who will, Christ does not care.

3. It is much to be deplored that the world is convicted, not only because of its sin and want of righteousness, not being able to judge rightly, but that it does not acknowledge nor see this, to say nothing of its endeavor to alter the matter. Oh, how completely the praise of all comes to naught, who, while they endeavor to make other people pious, know not themselves what sin is! Let us take, for example, at the present day, all the schools of learning and the learned men and see whether they can tell us what that one little word “sin” is? For who has ever heard that not to believe in Christ is sin? They say, it is sin if one speaks, desires or does something against God’s will and commandment. But how does that correspond with this saying of Christ: It is sin because they do not believe on me? Therefore, they are easily convicted of the fact that they know not what sin is; and if they be ever so learned, they will not be able to explain this text.

4. In like manner, they are not able to know what “righteousness” is. For who has ever heard that a man should become pious and just because Christ ascended to heaven or goes to the Father and we see him no ,more?

There we must say, a fool has thus spoken and not a wise man. For they say, righteousness is a virtue, which teaches man what he owes others.

This is true, but the trouble is, they do not understand their own words, such blind fools they are. Therefore, one needs not be surprised that they rage so much against the Gospel and persecute the Christians. How could they do otherwise? They know no better.

5. Neither do they know what “judgment” or right is, that is, a right judgment, a correct good opinion and sense, or whatever you may call it.

For they say: Right is that which is written in books, how one is to know and distinguish things, to quiet and end quarrels. But how does Christ define it? He says: “It is right, that the world is to be judged.” Who understands such speech, and where will it go in or out, and how does it correspond with reason? Let ut see whether we can explain it so that it may be understood.

6. In the first place one must know that the Word of God does not speak only of the outward existence and appearances, but it takes hold of the heart and the depths of the soul. Accordingly it does not judge man as to his outward appearance and action, but according to the depths of his conscience. Now, everyone will experience in himself, if he wishes to acknowledge it, however pious he may be (even though he were a Carthusian or as holy as any one on earth), that in his heart he would rather do the contrary, and otherwise than what he is outwardly compelled to do.

Thus, if I were left to myself, a monk, who walks about in poverty and chastity, as they pride themselves, but were made to confess how I feel in my heart, I must say: That which I do, I would rather not do. If there were no hell and I would not feel the disgrace, I would leave my office have the misfortune, and run off. For I have no desire from the heart to do it, but am compelled thereto, and must do it in spite of hell, punishment or disgrace.

It is not possible that I should do it from choice and gladly. Such everyone who is without grace finds in his own heart. The same you will find continually in other matters. I am never from my heart kind and friendly to my enemy, for this is impossible to nature; and though I act otherwise, in my heart I think thus: If it were not for the punishment, I would have my way and not remain without revenge. Thus, I still go about before the world, and do not as I would like and feel inclined to do, for fear of punishment or disgrace. Likewise if you go through all the commandments, from the first to the last, you will find that there is no one who keeps God’s commandments from the bottom of his heart.

7. Now, against this evil God found a remedy and determined to send Christ, his Son, into this world, that he should shed his blood and die, in order to make satisfaction for sin and take it away, and that the Holy Spirit then should enter the hearts of such people, who go about with the works of the Law, being unwilling and forced to it, and make them willing, in order that without force and with joyous heart they keep God’s commandments. Otherwise there might be no means of removing the misery; for neither human reason and power, nor even an angel could rescue us from it. Thus, God has done away with the sins of all men who believe on the Christ, so that henceforth it is impossible for one to remain in sin who has this Savior, who has taken all sins upon himself and blotted them out.

8. Inasmuch as Christ has now come and commanded to preach that everything we may do, however great and beautiful it may appear, is sin, because we do nothing that is good with pleasure and willingly, and that for this reason he has stepped forward and has taken away all sin, in order that we may receive the Holy Spirit, through whom we obtain love and pleasure to do what God wants us to do, in order that we do not attempt to come before God through our own works, but through Christ and his merits, therefore it cannot be called any longer sin committed against the Law, for the Law did nothing to assist us in becoming pious, since we are not able to do anything good.

9. What sort of sin then remains upon earth? No other than that one does not receive this Savior and refuses to accept him who has taken away sin.

For if he were present, there would be no sin, since he, as I have said, brings the Holy Spirit with him, who kindles the heart and makes it willing to do good. Therefore, the world is no longer punished and condemned on account of other sins, because Christ blots them all out; only this remains sin in the New Testament, that one will not acknowledge nor receive him.

Therefore he likewise says in this Gospel: “When the Holy Spirit is come, he will convict the world in respect of sin, because they believe not on me.”

10. As if he wished to say: Had they believed on me, everything would already have been forgiven them, whatever sin they might have committed, for I know that they by nature cannot do otherwise. But because they will not receive me, neither believe that I can help them, this it is that will condemn them. Therefore, God will at the final judgment pass a sentence like this on them: Behold, thou wast in sin and couldst not free thyself from it, still I did not on this account wish to condemn thee, for I sent my only begotten Son to thee and intended to give thee a Savior, in order that he might take the sin from thee. Him thou didst not receive. Therefore, on this account alone, thou wilt be condemned, because thou hast not Christ.

11. This sentence, then, is given for the honor and glory of the high grace, which God has given us in Christ the Lord. What reason would have ever been so wise as to discover that this was done for man’s sake? Reason is not able to rise higher in its thoughts than to say: I have sinned in deeds done. I must make good by doing other deeds. I must blot out and pay for the sin, in order that I may thus obtain a gracious God. If reason comes so far, it has reached its climax. Still it is nothing but foolishness and blindness.

12. But God speaks thus: If thou wilt be rid of sin, thou must do other works wherewith to pay the price. But with all the works which thou dost, thou canst do nothing but sin, even with the works wherewith thou thinkest to reconcile me and to do penance for thy sins. How wilt thou then, thou fool, blot out sin with sin? For even in the works which thou considerest the best and which thou canst do, thou sinnest if thou dost not do them willingly and from the heart. For if thou didst not fear punishment, thou wouldst rather not do them at all. Thus thou dost no more than that thou seekest to blot out little sins by doing greater ones; or else to commit such great ones that thou mayest lay aside others.

13. Wherefore, it is ever great blindness that a man does not see what sin is, nor know what good works are, but accepts sin for good works. When the Holy Spirit comes, he convicts the people and says: The works which thou hast done, as well as those which thou art still doing, are nothing but sin; therefore, it is all in vain that thou dost attempt to make satisfaction for thy sin according to thy ability. Then they feel compelled to say: Behold, this I did not know. Then says he: For this purpose I am here, in order to tell thee this. If thou hadst known it, it would not have been necessary for me to come and make it known. What wilt thou do now in order to be helped? This thou must do: Believe on the Savior, the Lord Christ, that he has taken away thy sin. If thou believest this, he is thine and thy sins will disappear; if not, then thou wilt never get rid of sin, but wilt always fall into it deeper and deeper.

14. Thus, with this passage everything has been completely overthrown that has hitherto been preached about penance and satisfaction for sin, and all else that has been practiced and urged. For this reason there have been founded many orders and masses, and on this account we have become priests and monks and have run to and fro in order best in the world, which the world considers pious and holy, to get rid of sin. Therefore, it also follows: Whatever is that is nothing but mere sin and a damnable thing.

Thus we have considered one part of this Gospel.

15. The second thought then follows: “The Holy Spirit will convict the world in respect to righteousness, because I go to the Father,” says Christ, “and ye behold me no more.” Rigtheousness means piety and a good and honorable life before God. What is this now? It is, says Christ, “because I go to the Father.” We have often said about the resurrection of Christ that it came to pass not for his sake, but for our sakes, in order that we may apply it to ourselves as a blessing which is our own. For this reason he is risen from the dead and has ascended to heaven, that he might begin a spiritual kingdom, in which he reigns in us through righteousness and truth.

Therefore, he sits above; he does not rest and sleep, does not play by himself, but, as Paul says, Ephesians 1:22, has his work here upon the earth, governing the consciences and the souls of men with the Gospel.

16. Wherever Christ is now preached and acknowledged, there he reigns in us, from the right hand of his Father, and is himself here below in the hearts of men. There he reigns with might, power and dominion over you and all your enemies, and guards you from sin, death, devil and hell. Thus is his resurrection and ascension our comfort, life, blessing, righteousness and everything in one. This is what the Lord means when he speaks of righteousness, that the people thereby should become pious and righteous, that he ascends to heaven to the Father and we see him no more. This the world does not know, therefore the Holy Spirit must come and convict the world of it.

17. How does this come to pass? Just as we have heard. Am I to become pious, it will not be enough for me to perform outwardly good works, but I must do them from the bottom of my heart, gladly and willingly, so that I may be free from the fear of sin, death and the devil; be joyous, and with a good conscience, and all confidence stand before him and know how I stand with him. This no work, no creature can give unto me, but Christ alone, who has ascended into heaven — there, where one cannot see him, but must believe that he sits yonder and wishes to help one. Such a faith makes me acceptable unto God; Christ gives me the Holy Spirit into my heart, who makes me willing and happy in the doing of every good work.

In this manner I become righteous, and in no other; for the works themselves make me more and more unwilling, the longer I occupy myself with them.

18. But the longer one is engaged in this work, the more willing it makes one’s heart; for wherever there is such knowledge, there the Holy Spirit cannot be wanting. When he comes, he makes the heart willing, joyful and happy, so that one may be free and willingly do what is pleasing to God, with joyous courage, and suffer whatever there is to suffer, yea, and even die willingly. And in proportion as this knowledge is clear and great, in that proportion the willingness and joy will also be great. Thus the commandment of God is fulfilled and everything done that one is to do, and thus thou art righteous. Who would ever have thought that this would be righteousness and that thus it should be. This question we have hitherto often heard about and considered, and although the words here be different, yet the sense and meaning are the same.

19. In the third place, the Holy Spirit is to convict the world in respect of judgment , that is that the world does not know what right is. For who has ever heard the definition of this right to be, because the prince of this world hath been judged? The prince of the world, to be sure is the devil, which one may readily see in his government.

20. If now I have learned to know what sin is and am free from it, and have obtained righteousness, so that now I stand in a new character and life and have become another man — have now the Lord Christ and know that something else than our works is required to get rid of sin — if these have come to pass in me, it then follows that I may have a correct judgment, having learned to judge differently before God. For, according to such understanding, I know how to discuss, conclude and judge of all things in heaven and upon earth, and to pass correct judgment; and when I have passed such a judgment, I can live accordingly. This no one else can do.

21. The world, in its holiness, maintains that righteousness means to perform good works wherewith to do penance for sin and reconcile God.

This has been taught in all the schools of learning. Such teachers think it is right and well done if only they can accomplish good works. But now comes the Holy Spirit and says: Not so. You err and are mistaken. Your judgment is wrong. Therefore there must be another judgment. You should judge thus: Everything that your reason concludes, is erroneous and false, and you are a fool and a simpleton.

22. Reason may do other things; for instance, know how to judge in worldly and human matters and affairs, how to build cities and houses, how to govern well, and the like. In such matters one may easily be able to judge and decide more wisely than another. Of this, however, we do not speak here, but of judgment in the significance of what is right or wrong before God. Here the Holy Spirit concludes thus: Every judgment of reason is false and worth nothing. Everything that is born of man and is not born from above, must be rooted out and crucified, so that no one may boast of it and depend upon it. Again, whatever the world considers as wisdom, that which it votes as wisely and intelligently devised and accomplished, is foolishness before God. In short, whatever the world does, is useless and cursed, unless it proceeds from Christ, the Lord, and is of his Word and Spirit, as he teaches us. If it does not proceed from him, it is surely mere blindness and there is no good in it.

23. Therefore everything that the world considers good is debased.

Everything is evil because it does not proceed from the Word and the Spirit, but from the old Adam, who is nothing more than a blind fool and sinner. And why? Should not your wisdom and reason be foolishness and count for nothing, since the most exalted one, who has all the power and wisdom of this world in the highest degree, is condemned? For, without doubt, there is no one in the world so wise, shrewd and rational as the devil, and no one is able to make a more pious appearance. And all wisdom and holiness that do not proceed from God, as well as the most beautiful things in the world, are found in their highest degree in the devil. Since he is a prince and the ruler of the world, the wisdom and righteousness of the world must proceed from him; here he reigns with all his power. Therefore, Christ says: Since the same prince of the world is condemned, with all that he has and can do, the world is ever blind because it considers that to be good which has been condemned already, namely his wisdom and piety.

24. We must, therefore, pass a correct judgment, such as Christ passes, if we are to guard against everything that the world considers and declares precious in order that it may appear before God prudent, wise and pious. If people who have not the Word and Spirit of Christ, desire to teach and govern, everything is already condemned; for in this way one accomplishes no more than to make the old Adam stronger and to establish him in his opinion that his works, his piety and prudence are to avail before God.

Thereby one must work himself deeper and deeper into the devil’s kingdom.

25. But now, since the prince of this world and the Holy Spirit, the kingdom of Christ and the kingdom of the devil, are directly opposed to one another, and the Holy Spirit is not willing that anyone should parade his own deeds and praise himself on account of them, the holy cross must soon follow. The world will not consent to be reprimanded for its blindness. Therefore one must willingly submit and suffer persecution. If we have the right kind of faith in our hearts, we must also open our mouths and confess righteousness and make known sin. Likewise we must condemn and punish the doings of this world and make it known that everything it undertakes, is damned. For this we must be considered heretics, and must pass through the fire. They say: This is against the holy councils and the canon of the holy father, the pope. Then you are to answer: How can I help it? Here it stands — the text does not say the Holy Spirit is to convict them and say their doctrine is error, blindness and the government of the devil. This, of course, they will not endure, but would have us call them gracious noblemen. Therefore, one must here risk his neck.

26. These are the three parts we have in this Gospel lesson: Sin is unbelief; righteousness is faith; the judgment is the holy cross. Therefore give heed and learn to consider everything that is without the Spirit as nothing and as condemned, and afterwards be prepared for the holy cross that thou must suffer on account of it. Now follows in the Gospel further: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all the truth.”

27. These words ought to be understood in all their simplicity, as if the Lord were to say: “These three parts which I have now related, you cannot yet fully understand, even though I were to explain them unto you. I would have to say much about them in order to explain them more fully, to make plain how things shall be, and you still stick too deep in your coarse, carnal reason to be able to comprehend it. Therefore, I will forbear now. When the Holy Spirit comes, he will enlighten your hearts, so that you will understand it, and will call to your remembrance all things, I tell you of it now, in order that you may think about it. Thus, we give these words in their simple meaning. It is as if I conversed with some one and said: I would yet have many things to say, but they are too difficult for you. You cannot yet comprehend and grasp them.

28. But our doctors and highly learned men have made use of these words in a frivolous way and said that it was necessary to have something more than the Gospel and the Scriptures; therefore one ought also to hear what the councils and the popes decree. They endeavor to prove in this way that Christ says here: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now;” therefore, because he has not told them all things, it must follow that he told them to the councils, popes and bishops, who are now to teach them.

29. Now look at these fools, what they say. Christ says: “I have yet many things to say unto you.” What does “you” mean? To whom does he speak?

Without doubt, to the apostles. To these he says: “I have yet many things to say unto you, but you cannot bear them now. Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he shall guide you into all truth.” Therefore, if Christ is not to lie, his Word must have been fulfilled at the time that the Holy Spirit came. The Holy Spirit must have said everything to them and accomplished everything that the Lord here refers to, and, of course, he led them into all the truth. How, then, do we get the idea that Christ should not have said everything, but should have kept much back, which the councils were to teach and to determine? With this idea his words do not at all harmonize. Christ gives to understand that soon the Holy Spirit would tell and explain to them all things, and that afterwards the apostles should carry out everything, and through them should be made known to the world what they have learned from the Holy Spirit. But, according to the councils and popes,’ it depends on what they say, teach and command, even to the end of the world.

30. Moreover, Christ says further: “He shall guide you into all the truth.”

Here we conclude: If what the councils teach be the truth, that one is to wear the tonsure and the cap and live a life of celibacy, then the apostles never came to the truth, since none of them ever entered a cloister, nor kept any of those foolish laws. Thus, Christ must indeed have betrayed us in this, that he said the Holy Spirit should guide us into all the truth, when in reality he wished to teach how we were to become priests ‘and monks and not to eat meat on certain days, and like foolish things.

31. Without doubt it is “truth” before God when one lives an upright and sincere life. But if we now look at our ecclesiasts, pope, bishops, priests and monks, we see nothing but carnival masks, who give themselves the outward appearance of being pious, but in their hearts they are villains.

What popes, bishops, and orders have ever led us into this truth, which should spring from within — out of the heart? In everything they are concerned about the outward appearance of things, in order that they may make a display before the eyes of the people.

32. Thus they have perverted this text masterfully in order to strengthen their lies; and yet we are to call them gracious lords! To hear such things is exasperating and it should grieve our hearts that we are to suffer such great outrage — should see how shamefully the people act against the precious Word of God and that they make the Holy Spirit a liar. Should not this single passage be powerful enough against the pope and the councils, even if we had no other in the Scriptures?

33. Thirdly, Christ says: “You cannot bear them now.” Here we ask: My dear, should it have been too hard for the apostles to understand or to obey such laws as abstaining from meat, and the like? They had been accustomed in the law of Moses to observe many such outward ceremonies, and had been educated therein all their life, so that it would have been child’s play for them. Moreover, they understood this better than we do. Is it such a difficult matter — that a monk must wear a black or gray cap, the pope three crowns, a bishop a pointed hat, or the manner of dedicating churches and altars and baptizing bells — are these so difficult as to make it necessary that the Holy Spirit should come from heaven to teach such things? If it is not acting the fool enough that one jests with these noble words, then I do not know how one may be a worse fool.

34. Therefore, beware of these liars and understand the words rightly, thus:

Christ wishes to speak of the inward, actual character, not of outward jugglery. He wishes to make the heart, before the eyes of God, pious and righteous in order that it, in the first place, acknowledge its sin, and in the second place, that it acknowledge him to be the one who forgives sin and suffers himself to be sacrificed upon the cross. This is that “truth” which the apostles were not yet able to hear and understand. But those outward things make no one righteous, lead no one to the truth. They make only hypocrites and a show, by which the people are deceived.

35. Thus, we have the true meaning of this passage, from which we see how fools who seek from it to bolster up their jugglery, place themselves in opposition to it and build upon the sand. There is scarcely a passage that is more strongly opposed to them than this one. We have briefly explained this Gospel lesson in order that we may see how it teaches just that which we have always preached.

More Tactics of the Lutheran Left - To Promote Their Precious UOJ.
The Atonement Is Not Justification

Lutherans are dismayed about the results,
but avoid dealing with the cause -
Universal Absolution without Faith, UOJ.

The previous post on Tactics of the Lutheran Left described some, but not all of their methods.

Below are a few more.

Appeal to Authority. Certain names are used to end all discussion because these people are more significant than the Scripture witness.

  • Holy Mother Synod has spoken. The leaders say "Scripture alone" but they practice "Holy Mother Synod Alone." His Holiness DP Buchholz even declared that UOJ was settled doctrine.
  • Walther, Pieper, their clones, the younger Robert Preus, Valleskey, Bivens, Pope John the Malefactor (nee Moldstad), Paul McCain, Herman Otten, Jack Cascione, the younger Jim Heiser and his clergy, and many more. The argument against Justification by Faith is, "Are you calling _______ a false teacher?!"
  • Just like the Church of Rome, the leaders can cite an endless list of authorities who have endorsed, promoted, and fought for this, their favorite dogma. However, the entire collection together does not make a dent on the Scriptures, which is why they Baptistically misquote a Scriptural phrase here and there, ignoring the plain teaching of the Bible. To paraphrase Edward Preuss, who taught at St. Louis as a Lutheran and finished his life as a Roman Catholic authority, "Give me the citations and I can prove anything."
  • The always comical Jay Webber cited the first president of my seminary as a UOJ advocate, as if that meant anything. The man was a Pietist in a Pietistic synod, where sulfuric sermons were blasted against playing cards. Jay only proved my point - Pietists love the rationalism of UOJ. As they claim, "If Christ died for the sins of the world, then everyone in the world is without sin and saved."
Why give up a false appeal to authority
when it works so well?

Fallacy of Emphasis. One matter is emphasized to create a false impression.
  • Atonement passages in the Bible and in the Book of Concord are gathered with glee to "prove the entire world has been forgiven and saved, without faith." Proving that Christ died for the sins of the world is not the same as showing that everyone is born forgiven and saved, as Edward Preuss wrote and Robert Preus repeated.
  • "Christ died for the ungodly..." But of course, He did. That does not support the Universalism of UOJ. The Atonement is the treasure of the Bible, as Luther often wrote. To turn the Atonement into universal forgiveness and salvation is to ignore the Means of Grace, the Holy Spirit distributing the treasure through the Word and Sacraments.
  • "The Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world." If this means everyone is already forgiven and saved, then "You must be born from above" means "You must have a born-again experience." The Lamb of God proclamation of John the Baptist is the Atonement.
  • "If Christ became sin for us, then everyone in the world is righteous." The Gospel must be preached to kindle and sustain faith. This shallow display of logic is clearly quashed in advance by many passages, such as the wrath of God remaining on unbelievers.
  • "If the risen Christ was justified, 1 Timothy 3:16, then the entire world was justified in Him when He rose from the dead. This pronouncement of justification applies to Jesus alone, showing the world that He died without sin. He did not need justification, but this shows how He died without sin, unlike all of humanity. Here the Pietist Rambach rejoices in universal justification, as Jay Webber and Walther do. Jay is a true Waltherian, because he also pimped for an adulterous pastor, as Walther did.
Ad Baculum - Threats. Someone must agree with Holy Mother Synod or be kicked out of the ministerium, excommunicated, lose all financial support and benefits, and be excoriated by all his friends.
  • Many Lutheran leaders rejoice because they have the easiest life and the most money - free trips to Europe and other exotic places. They fear the truth would topple the topless beach tours of France and Brazil, where they go to share the Gospel, so they threaten anyone who would impede their pleasures.
  • The threats are genuine and carried out with the speed and ferocity utterly lacking when dealing with genuine cases of discipline. However, threats only support the reign of false teachers. They cannot make a case from the Word or the Confessions, so they shake their fists and email their public executions.
The DP would like a word with you.

Tactics of the Lutheran Left - Apostasy instead of Luther's Biblical Doctrine

Someone appreciated the Luther sermon I posted for Cantate Sunday, so I will soon post the other two, here and on Facebook.

I learned years ago that saying something was available is no match for putting it on the front page with graphics.

Below are tactics of the Lutheran Left, which controls the LCMS, WELS, ELS, CLC (sic), and ELCA. Of course, ELCA has completely abandoned its distinguished theologians of the past, so the battle is over. But these tactics worked well in the LCA in preparation for the ultimate merger with Seminex/AELC/ALC.

Some mark their territory
because leaders today do not mark and avoid
.

I'm young and I love to be young.
I'm free and I love to be free.
To live my life the way I want,
To say and do whatever I please.

Tactics - And They Work
Attack Faith. Make the word faith sound so repulsive that anyone mentioning faith has to be admonished right away with stern words. This is a version of poisoning the well, listed separated. But faith has to be set aside, diminished, and even removed whenever possible from discussions.

Poisoning the Well. Any source has to ge the treatment, so the source is obliterated from quoting, even from the slightest mention.

  • Luther was "heavily influenced by Medieval theology," or "the early Luther cannot be trusted" (Romans Commentary).
  • The late Luther is too polemical (Galatians Lectures).
  • Inerrancy is a product of scholasticism, so Chemnitz made a law out of something Luther never taught.
  • Someone mentions me to WELS pastors just to be entertained by the lengthy rant that follows. I don't know Greek, doncha know, which is why I teach NT Greek on Ustream.
  • Faith is Calvinism or Arminian/Decision Theology. "Don't make faith into a work!"
Adultery and false doctrine do not
hamper Billy Graham's grandson.

Hysterical Drama. So much fuss is stirred up that no one even thinks of raising the issue or mentioning that person again.

  • One of the few entertainment features of the CLC (sic) consisted of Paul Tiefel and Dave Koenig going nuts whenever I did or said something. Tiefel even took the mike at their mini-micro convention to cry about how badly he had been treated. His season in Purgatory consisted of doing whatever he wanted, broadcasting the crudest false doctrine, and always have CLC Prez Fleischer back him up.
  • Paul McCain and his stooges make sure that Justification by Faith is never discussed seriously. The LCMS has canonized the McCain Principle by banning all doctrinal discussion.
  • Anyone who dares to challenge the drama queens is quickly labeled, ad hominem, the personal attack. Someone wrote to Herman Otten that I was destroying the CLC (sic). I used that in a meeting where they were trying to silence me. I asked, "Who is leaking privileged information to Otten? I didn't." Utter silence followed.
  • I had fun with the CLC (sic) Sanhedrin. I said, "Some say I am abrasive. And I am." I tossed a piece of sandpaper on the table, "Which side do you use?" Mouths hung open. Later the prez told my friend, "We had to break our own rules, because he was always outsmarting us."
Ad Hominem - Against the Person. This is one way to change the subject immediately (by itself, a favorite tactic, listed below). The idea is to claim that the person is so unworthy of attention that nothing he says is worth considering.
  • Luther hated women.
  • Paul hated women, too. What do both have in common? Justification by Faith, inerrancy, the efficacy of the Word.
  • Someone is a Fundamentalist, KJV only, TLH only, or even uglier names.
  • The choicest ad hominem fallacies contain a kernel of truth mixed with outright lies. Paul McCain, for example, used our Internet worship services to say I had people "put their hands on the TV set" etc.  Many made our willingness to broadcast evil by itself.
Change the Subject. Nothing works so fast as changing the subject. Fallacies are designed and used to keep away from the main subject.
  • WELS leading lights Zarling and Bivens started essays on the Chief Article, which is Justification by Faith, and switched to UOJ - which is anti-JBFA.
  • According to the LCMS, WELS, ELS, CLC (sic), and ELCA, celebrating the 500th Anniversary of the Reformation means ignoring and undermining the Reformer himself, his doctrine especially.
  • One way to change the subject is to feature the history of Luther, which has lesser importance, and side-step his doctrine.
  • Another way to change the main issue with Luther is to tell cute little anecdotes and offer some quotations - some of them actually true. However, factual accuracy is not necessary and citations are a waste of time.

Inevitable Conclusion
Those who base their church work and income on falsehoods must pay the price. Unfortunately, they make many others participate in the fee imposed by God and Satan.

God allows the stooges of Satan their time of fun, to punish those who tolerate false doctrine.

Why don't the esteemed and degreed seminary faculties say something about the doctrinal fraud imposed upon their synods? My answer - they obtained their positions by kissing up the to apostate leaders, so they are incapable or unwilling to oppose any error more significant than "individual cups at communion?" or "shall we allow the Christian flag behind the altar?"

Satan collects from those who earn the most in dollars and public honors. Are we in the end times, the era of the Great Apostasy? Look at the Lutheran celebrities - Jeske and Ski?

List the Evangelical-Pentecostal stars - all tin-plated purveyors of false doctrine, adultery, and various addictions.

The Birds No Longer Wait for Me To Go Inside.
Keeping the Air Wing Happy

Some WELSians get their Geneva gowns
in a knot because I look good as a Franciscan, so I run this
graphic several times a year.

Family News
Today Chris invited Sassy and me for a walk around the cul-de-sac. She has more energy now than the year before her cancer surgery.

We had a great time Saturday with LI's family, when our oldest grandchild graduated from the community college, with plans to finish at - Woooooooooo, Pig ! Sooie! Razorbacks! - the U. of Arkansas. That cheer is often used at Walmart meetings and is carefully reproduced all over town.

Next week is the younger daughter's graduation from high school. There will be a family dinner at a restaurant, so we suggested Sonic's where both granddaughters work. They get along great, which is why the older girl, an assistant manager, hired her sister.

Mother's Day Roses
I got up early to cut roses for each home on our block. The mother of four daughters got four Easy Does It roses. The two brothers got pink roses for their mother's grave. And so on. Tonight, one of the four daughters brought over a long-stemmed red rose for Chris and mowed our lawn.

Simply giving roses away has brought the block closer. Our little street is Hispanic, Laotian, and Caucasian, all on one block. But everyone loves roses.

We had a few extras, which I planned for our police officer, wife, and baby a block away. Another set went to Sassy's good friends, John and his wife Pat.

Yes, we had a bunch of Easy Does It orange roses for the altar, and one perfect Queen Elizabeth for the bud vase.

Birds Collect When I Am Still Outside, Because I Keep the Air Wing Happy

My backyard duties include:

  1. Changing the water in the birdbaths
  2. Filling the feeders
  3. Using rainwater for special plants in the back and front
  4. Checking for new developments: weeds, new plants, roses.
Today was especially fun because the feeders were empty, except for finch food in the squirrel-proof feeder - squirrels hate finch food unless starving. Finches love Nyjer (TM), sometimes mistakenly called thistle, but the rest of the birds shun it. However, finches really love sunflower seeds. The Nyjer (TM) lasts forever, because the finches switch over to sunflower seeds when I fill the feeders.

I washed out and filled five birdbaths of various sizes, the shallowest being a flat, plastic garbage can lid. I keep the water clean and shallow so all the creatures get access. The birds are intimidated by depth, and toads like shallow water for hydrating.

Plants designated for extra rainwater include:
  1. Butterfly Bushes
  2. Pokeweed
  3. The new Crepe Myrtle growing near the kitchen window
  4. The newly planted Horse Mints, which will thrive next year
  5. The Elderberry hedge, growing and blooming
  6. Honeysuckle
If serious rain is forecast, I aim at emptying all rain sources before they are filled again. We have another major storm predicted for next week. This storage and use of rainwater gives some plants double doses, to revive the weak and to boost the strong, favored plants. I have also found fresh, ground coffee benefiting plants.

"Ichabod, this coffee tastes like mud."
"Well, Mrs. I, it was fresh ground this morning." Bada-bing.
In truth, the coffee is de-caff and compares unfavorably to mud, so I use it on flowers, without brewing it.

I fed the birds last, and heard them carrying on in the trees like we had some bird sanctuary. Of course, it is, with all kinds of trashy weirdness to benefit birds and soil creatures. That also means various forms of shelter in our yard and nearby. Natural foods include all kind of bugs and berries.

Before I could put the lid on the seed can, birds were landing on the feeders. Downy Woodpeckers were first, followed by a Cardinal on the ground, and common Sparrows looking for treats. Since male Cardinals are the shyest of birds, the early approach pleased me. Now most birds will eat with us only inches away, inside, watching them feed.

Rationalism Not Proof of Creation
I was disappointed in watching a heavily scripted video. A science professor told of being stymied by a student who asked questions about the theory of evolution. He became a Creationist and then a Christian, he said.

My objections to this approach are simple. Creation rests upon the Word of God, not the logic of man. Answering doubt with rationalism is like curing thirst with salt-water. Inevitably, someone will have a rationalistic answer to the rationalistic questioning of evolution.

As one scientist said, "Why begin with the weakest arguments, from science, instead of the strongest ones, from the Scriptures?"

That could be said for Intelligent Design. I do not question the basics of Intelligent Design, but why water it down so it does not sound like Creation by the Word?

There is also the alloy of Creation and evolution, Creation over billions of years, wild rose at the base (evolution) with a nice display on top (Creation) to hide the evolutionary assumptions. In the long run, the wild root base will win, the hybrid rose will fade, and evolution will openly dominate.

The strength of Creation is - Creation by the Word, the Logos, the Son of God. Genesis 1 said God commanded by the Word, and that Word (Logos) is identified as Jesus in John 1.

John 1
In the beginning was the Word,
and the Word was with God,
and the Word was God.
The same was in the beginning with God.
All things were made by Him; and without Him was not any thing made that was made.

If we do not concede the absolute power of the Word of God to accomplish His will, then everything pretending to belong to the Crhistian Faith turns to ashes and dust when we build a foundation on man's knowledge and experience.
Creation is a mystery revealed by the Spirit in the Word, not a theory or philosophy.
Gardening in faith clarifies the clarity of the Word. Jesus is both the Lord of Creation and the Teacher of Creation in His parables and lessons.

Plant It and They Will Come
One of my current fascinations is the attraction of beneficial bugs to certain plants, many of them ignored by gardeners because of their tiny, inconspicuous flowers.
Most people do not want Poison Hemlock in their garden. When I finally identified it, Almost Eden said, "Look at the ladybugs on it." They were crawling all over the toxic flowers that killed Socrates.
One neighbor got a copy of Creation Gardening and said, as a Christian, "Of course, that should work, following God's ways."

Natalie Pratt had a lot of these gimmicks on her following Twitter list, and wanted people to think she had instant stardom on her
short-lived blogs. Luther Days was just as fake, as they
learned when the WELS money disappeared.

The bizarre 'click farm' of 10,000 phones that give FAKE 'likes' to our most-loved apps - Mirror Online:

"Footage has emerged of a giant "click farm" that uses more than 10,000 mobile phones to give product ratings and pages on social media websites phoney "likes".

Companies reportedly pay thousands to get their apps more likes by using services like this massive plant offers.

This covert clip in China shows rows and rows of like-making machines all wired to other devices in a factory.

And there are said to be thousands more phones in the same building all made for the same purpose."

Fourth Sunday After Easter

Lord God, heavenly Father, who didst through Thy Son promise us Thy Holy Spirit, that He should convince the world of sin, of righteousness, and of judgment: We beseech Thee, enlighten our hearts, that we may confess our sins, through faith in Christ obtain everlasting righteousness, and in all our trials and temptations retain this consolation, that Christ is Lord over the devil and death, and all things, and that He will graciously deliver us out of all our afflictions, and make us forever partakers of eternal salvation, through the same, Thy Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

KJV James 1:16 Do not err, my beloved brethren. 17 Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, and cometh down from the Father of lights, with whom is no variableness, neither shadow of turning. 18 Of his own will begat he us with the Word of Truth, that we should be a kind of firstfruits of his creatures. 19 Wherefore, my beloved brethren, let every man be swift to hear, slow to speak, slow to wrath: 20 For the wrath of man worketh not the righteousness of God. 21 Wherefore lay apart all filthiness and superfluity of naughtiness, and receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls.

KJV John 16:5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged. 12 I have yet many things to say unto you, but ye cannot bear them now. 13 Howbeit when he, the Spirit of truth, is come, he will guide you into all truth: for he shall not speak of himself; but whatsoever he shall hear, that shall he speak: and he will shew you things to come. 14 He shall glorify me: for he shall receive of mine, and shall shew it unto you. 15 All things that the Father hath are mine: therefore said I, that he shall take of mine, and shall shew it unto you.

What Do Mothers Teach Their Children? - Faith

KJV John 16:5 But now I go my way to him that sent me; and none of you asketh me, Whither goest thou? 6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart.

Lenski Commentary, John:
The addition: "and none of you inquires of me. Where art thou going?" while it is joined with "and," is adversative, "and yet." Strange to say — and Jesus says it with a touch of gentle reproof and of pain in his own heart — not one of the eleven makes a request of him as to where he is going. "Where,"  is used, as in common English, for "whither," R. 298. The disciples seem to have no interest in this return of Jesus to his Sender. They make no request to learn more about the destination of Jesus and about what it means to him fo return to his Sender. Jesus is, indeed, not thinking of what his return means for himself personally, his glorification and the blessedness that awaits him with the Father. He has in mind the significance of his return for the disciples whom he is leaving behind.

This sermon by Jesus is all-important, for several reasons.
  • First of all, it is part of His farewell, which in the Bible is the most important of all the addresses of leaders.
  • Secondly, because this is directly from Jesus and reported by the disciple He loved, every phrase is significant and not to be overlooked.
  • Finally, since the Fourth Gospel has the role of teaching sound doctrine and anticipating false doctrine, to rebuke it, these verses deserve special and careful consideration.

The setting is quite personal and easy to understand. The disciples know Jesus will no longer be with them. Sorrow has filled their hearts, so there is room for little else. When our feelings take over, they overwhelm reasonable thought, and even react against such thought. Therefore,  this is a sympathetic portrayal that helps us realize how they were already completely distressed when Jesus was arrested and taken away. Fear, panic, sorrow - all spread rapidly and take over. This battle is lost for the moment among the disciples, but served to strengthen them for the rest of the apostolic mission. Judas had faith in Jesus, but the wrong faith.

I told the Old Testament classes that we studied John 5:24-47 in the Greek class. Jesus, in addressing His opponents, makes three powerful arguments.

  1. You rejoiced in the light of John the Baptist, and he witnessed about Me.
  2. The Father Himself bears witness to Me.
  3. You profess to love the Scriptures of Moses, but he speaks of Me too, so you really despise Moses and the Torah.
The necessary conclusion is implied - Therefore, all righteousness comes from believing in Me. He speaks of this in light of the Final Judgment, when all the dead will be raised by His Word.

7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you.

This is God's plan, to transform a local ministry - they enjoyed so much - into a global mission which will be countered with violence and persecution. Since it is God's plant for Jesus to ascend to His throne, the Spirit will come to guide and lead them in all truth, and to bring to mind everything He has taught them.

Mother's Day
The high church people take pride in not mentioning Mother's Day. They consider that  to be a great sin. The liturgical calendar is a worthwhile and very edifying tradition of man, like Mother's Day.

This year Mother's Day lands on Cantate Sunday, where Jesus teaches the true meaning of the Spirit's work. It did not take me long to associate this lesson with Mother's Day.

What do mothers do with their young children? They teach them faith in Jesus. Naturally, the father is the spiritual leader of the home, but he is often busy with his work. Parents take their newborns to church to be baptized. Even the Babtists have their children dedicated and sanctified by the Word, misunderstanding baptism by water and the Word.

Mothers will pray with their children, have their children learn the Lord's Prayer and the 23rd Psalm.

8 And when he is come,
  • he will reprove the world of sin,
  • and of righteousness,
  • and of judgment:

  • 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me;
  • 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
  • 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

These verses seem mysterious at first, but they condense the Gospel message of Jesus into a few words. When I teach the Old Testament in the MA program, the students all define sin based on the second table of the Ten Commandments. They talk about the short-comings of others, and their own. These range from chasing women to someone who had, at one time, three life sentences imposed on him.

I ask them to consider sin as Jesus defined it - starting with not believing on Him, which could also be translated as not utterly trusting in Him for forgiveness and salvation. Luther has a wry comment - They think the their sinful works can be paid for with good works. So, it is very easy to be stuck in this mode, especially since America was largely settled by Pietists, Calvinists, and Roman Catholics. The burden of salvation through the Law is almost automatic, and the leaders of works-righteousness are untouchable, holy saints.

Unbelief is the foundational sin, so we see what a great benefit it is for parents to baptized their children, teach them basics of catechism, and to emphasize faith in Jesus as their Savior. This is so deeply embedded in children by believing parents that these lessons stick with them for life.

The cure for sin is not saying it embarrasses the family or tribe or sect. It is not saying that a virtuous life is good and beneficial. The cure for sin is faith in Christ, not that someone becomes sin-free, but rejoices in the daily forgiveness of sin through the Spirit at work in the Gospel.

My mother had us memorize Scripture - KJV. I memorized the 23rd Psalm. The last thing I said to her was "You taught me this," and I read it to her. She breathed a deep sigh and soon passed into eternal life.

This is the ideal - that we are given the Gospel at the beginning and hear the Gospel at the end of earthly life. Many things can happen in-between. As Luther says, believing does not make the Christian perfect, but sin does not dominate his life. Many fall from grace, sometimes in spectacular ways, but the early lessons are still there, and the Spirit dwells in those who are baptized.

Lacking faith, an individual cannot call upon God for comfort. Lacking faith, he does not pray. What do parents teach small children? Prayer, which requires faith. Therefore, the fruit of faith becomes a habit, and prayer bears fruit too. The power of prayer is so great that God works miracles according to His wisdom and timing. He does not acknowledge the mortal habit - or sin - of Management by Objectives, where people order Him to do certain things according to a timetable.

 MBO is Management by Objectives,
as defined by Peter Drucker.

This conviction of sin continues with the Christian believer because we falter and grow weary of the trials of life. Rather than taking comfort in the Gospel Promises, we grow impatient with God not delivering the blessings we would like to have.

Gerhardt is brilliant in his hymns in seeking comfort in the Gospel rather than in material solutions. For that reason he was blessed with unusual gifts and great influence, which continues today. The most appreciative are the non-Lutherans introduced to his work.

When the material solutions come through, this convicting work of the Spirit reminds us of our doubts. The wait for anything is terribly long, but not when good news arrives. Then it seems like a few seconds have passed.

  • 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more;
Righteousness comes from receiving the Gospel in faith, so it does not depend on the visible presence of Christ. This also means that His very Ascension is additional evidence (now mostly ignored) of His divinity.

Christ on His throne reminds us of the vast gap between how He is taught by sceptics and unbelievers and apostates, and how He really is.

53. In this sense Christ also uses it here, and he intends to indicate that when the Holy Spirit shall pursue the two themes of his preaching in the world and shall convict it in respect of sin and righteousness, the world will not receive it, nor be willing to be convicted of being in sin and without righteousness, nor be moved to allow the righteousness of Christ to be offered to it. But it will set itself against this teaching and convicting of the Holy Spirit, and condemn and persecute it. It will claim to be right in doing so and to be obliged not to suffer its wisdom and righteousness, which it considers divine gifts and service of God, to be reduced to nothing.

  • 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.
If we know what sin is - unbelief in Christ, then we know and understand the "righteousness of faith," as described by Luther and the Book of Concord.

If those two are known, judgment is that Satan is condemned. We belong to Christ or Satan. There are no alternatives. Therefore, the judgment is clear and unequivocal.

James - and receive with meekness the engrafted Word, which is able to save your souls.

The most vivid description of our relationship with Christ is from James - the engrafted Word. Two plants are tied together to form a graft. They are plainly from two plants but they become one.

The Word grafts itself onto us. The Spirit dwells in us and delights in the Gospel. As I told one person, the illustration below is often on my mind and has been a prod to get my mind off of various difficulties.

Like the force of a gyro, it pulls us in the right direction when we pull away. We do not always like the tug we feel, but that is the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
