ELCA Exits Continue - The Bishops' Synod (NALC) Has 250 Congregations Already?

First Lutheran Church of Paxton Illinois took its second and final vote today to sever its ties with the ELCA. The vote was 79-3 with 1 abstention. It also convened a second meeting to address the council's unanimous recommendation to affiliate with the North American Lutheran Church. That vote also passed 74-1 with 2 abstentions. [GJ - Augustana College was located in Paxton for a brief period of time, before landing in Rock Island.]

GJ - Mr. Squirrel humiliated me again. Not long ago, he stood on the squirrel-baffle and the bush to reach the seed, pumping the bar to feed sunflowers into his mouth. So I trimmed back the bush, to deny him a place for one leg.
Instead he stood with both feet on the baffle and fed himself.
He also hung down from the top of the bird-feeder, using the squirrel-prevent bar to pump seeds into his greedy mouth.
Meanwhile, I have been placing salted peanuts in the shell on the outside window sill. The fearless squirrels sit there and eat their peanuts, often watching us with no concern at all. I have tried scaring them away, but a squirrel will just do a startle move, getting ready to jump, without leaving the food. Once I opened the window and the squirrel on the feeder seemed to launch himself away as if a sling-shot propelled him.
My biggest reward lately has been a blue jay stopping by for peanuts. One day I was out of peanuts on the sill. The jay walked up and down on the sill, looking in, full of wrath that he was out of treats. In Midland I had one that bathed each morning and landed on the kitchen window sill, screaming at me, all wet, looking for his morning treat. When I opened the window, he flew to the maple and waited for the food, returning at once.
A $6 bag of salted peanuts in the shell has lasted me weeks and has about two weeks to go. The sunflower seeds are still being eaten, but it is nothing like the parade of cardinals we got after the heavy snows. They have paired off now. We see a male and a female around the feed from time to time.

Virginia Ramey Mollenkott celebrated her 75th birthday a few days ago. You may or may not know Virginia, but the odds are if you're reading this blog, your life has been touched by her work.In 1978, Virginia Mollenkott co-authored (with Letha Dawson Scanzoni) the book Is the Homosexual My Neighbor? A Postive Christisan Response. God alone knows how many queer lives she saved with that book, which is still on the shelves, revised and re-isued, after 19 years. Yow!
I first ran into this handsome butch spiritual lesbian about ten years ago when we met at the now defunct A Different Light LGBT bookstore in New York City. Virginia has written 13 books, but my favorite remains Omnigender: A Trans-Religious Approach, in which she debunks the myth of religious "truth" of two and two only genders, and she does this religion by religion. It's amazing work.

Mollenkott served as Stylistic Consultant for the New International Version of the Bible, and as a member of the National Council of Churches' Inclusive Language Lectionary Committee, coming out to the NCC convention in support of the Metropolitan Community Church's application for membership. She has guest lectured at hundreds of universities, church conferences and seminaries, and testified on behalf of the New Jersey anti-discrimination law, receiving a l992 Achievement Award from the NJ Lesbian and Gay Coalition. In 1999, SAGE (Senior Action in a Gay Environment) presented her with a Lifetime Achievement Award for her work of combating heterosexism in religion.
Mollenkott has served as Board Member for various GLBT-friendly organizations, including Evangelicals Concerned, The Center for Sexuality and Religion, and Kirkridge Retreat Center, where for many years has led several GLBT events annually. She is a founding member of the GLBT-inclusive Evangelical and Ecumenical Women's Caucus.
Among her twelve books, the most explicitly lesbian is Sensuous Spirituality: Out From Fundamentalism, although lesbians have also enjoyed The Divine Feminine: Biblical Imagery of God as Female. Her most recent and most radical work, Omnigender: A TransReligious Approach, won the 2002 Lambda Literary Award in the bisexual/transgender category.

One of the major blocks to going through with my gender change was my fear of God's wrath. It makes sense—I'm a Jew, and we believe that God can be mighty wrathful when He wants to be—no matter that wrath is a deadly sin.
I left religion behind me, and embraced atheism as a spiritual path.
Many transgender people do that: when our religious leaders tell us how angry God is going to be with us for messing with our God-given genders, we turn away from God. And we eventually reach a point of unbearable loneliness and inconsolable grief, with no God to comfort us. Virginia Ramey Mollenkott is the first person to address our spiritual conundrum. She is the first person to return us to God's comfort and wisdom.

Over the recent history of the movement for transgender freedom—the 1990's and the late 1980's—trannies fell into one of two camps: either we were academics, who taught the neither/nor beliefs of postmodern theory, or we were political activists who fought for transgender civil liberties. For nearly a decade, Virginia Mollenkott has stood alone as a spiritual leader, a beacon to every transgender person who came across her work.
In her ground-breaking book, Omnigender, a trans-religious approach, Virginia teaches that the origin of trans oppression found in Deuteronomy comes down to the old Jewish love of binaries, and their abhorrence of incompatibility.
Men do one thing, women do another. They can't be mixed up. According to old Jewish ways of thinking, when you add femaleness to maleness, you pollute maleness and confuse the accepted bipolar gender system. That’s a double bind: first, it implies that femaleness is polluting, and second, it plays on the fact that Jews despise confusion. It’s why we’re always think-think-thinking!
Virginia's answer to the paranoia of Deuteronomy is this, from Omnigender:
“Any sincerely religious person who believes that women and men are equally created in God's image should think twice before invoking biblical prohibitions against cross-dressing and same-sex love. Because these prohibitions are associated with the attitude that femaleness is a pollutant, they have no place within a democratic and fair-minded society, let alone in a contemporary church, synagogue, or mosque.”
Virginia taught us that God—like gender—has many faces, and that none of His true faces are wrathful or transphobic. By painstakingly tracing the roots of trans prohibition in religions, Virginia has built us a bridge that connects postmodern theory and political activism with spirituality. That's never been done before.
Today, touring around to colleges and universities, I'm seeing more and more young trans students who are majoring in Religious Studies. Each and very one of them I spoke told me that Virginia Mollenkott was a major inspiration for their wish to ma
ke spirituality and religion a more integral and accessible part of the transgender experience.
Why might Dr. Mollenkott be so successful at reaching out to trannies? Well, one reason Virginia's work is so popular amongst trannies is that Virginia makes it okay to be religious and sexy at the same time. I mean, just look at this sexy, handsome woman (who just happens to be one of the finest flirts I know!)Thanks to Virginia Mollenkott, religion hasn't been this sexy or this much fun since the days of temple prostitutes!

I was privileged to spend some time with my friend and mentor Virginia and her partner. And I was able to enjoy Nancy and her assistant Connie's company as well. Great lectures, wonderful music including a concert by folk singer Carrie Newcomer, a closing worship service that really grounded me in a way that was very helpful.
I've been slow to join EEWC (EEWC Website) and slower to attend their conferences and read their GREAT newsletter Christian Feminism Today. So learn from my mistakes whether you're male or female identified and join this great organization. These people, women and men, have something special going on. You won't find me missing from one of their conferences again!

Virginia Ramey Mollenkott spent her 44 year professional career teaching college level English literature and language, but developed specializations in feminist theology and lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender theology during the second half of that career.
She was born in Philadelphia's Temple University Hospital on January 28, 1932; married Frederick H. Mollenkott on June 17, 1954; had a son, Paul F. Mollenkott, on July 3, 1958; and was divorced in July of 1973. She earned her B.A. from fundamentalist Bob Jones University in 1953; her M.A. at Temple University in 1955; her Ph.D. at New York University in 1964; and received an honorary Doctorate in Ministries from Samaritan College in 1989. She chaired the English Department at Shelton College, Ringwood, New Jersey, from 1955-1963 and at Nyack College, Nyack, New York, from 1963-1967. She then taught at William Paterson University in Wayne, New Jersey from 1967 to 1997, chairing the English Department from 1972-1976 and since 1997 holding the position of Professor of English Emeritus.
Dr. Mollenkott served as an assistant editor of Seventeenth Century News from 1965-1975; as a stylistic consultant for the New International Version of the Bible for the American Bible Society from 1970-1978; as a member of the translation committee for An Inclusive Language Lectionary for the National Council of Churches from 1980-1988; on the Board of Pacem in Terris, Warwick, New York, from 1980-1990; on the Board of the Upper Room AIDS Ministry, Harlem, New York, from 1989-1994; on the Board of Kirkridge Retreat and Conference Center, Bangor, PA, from 1980-1991; on the Advisory Board of the Program on Gender and Society at the Rochester (New York) Divinity School from 1993-1996; as a manuscript evaluator for the Journal of Feminist Studies in Religion from 1994 to the present; as a contributing editor to The Witness from 1994 to 2000; and as a contributing editor to The Other Side from 2003-2007. She has delivered hundreds of guest lectures on feminist and LGBT theologies at churches, conferences, universities and seminaries throughout the United States.

She has published dozens of articles in scholarly and literary journals as well as church-related publications, and is an active founding member of the Evangelical and Ecumenical Women's Caucus, better known as Christian Feminism Today.

Sodomy and the NIV
The following readings compare the KJB and the NIV in several areas where sodomy or homosexual behavior is mentioned. Going over these, it is easy to see that sodomy was never considered as a viable concept in the NIV and homosexuality was presented from Dr. Mollenkott's viewpoint. The comments of Dr. Mollenkott are from her book, Is The Homosexual My Neighbor? (abbreviated as ITHMN)
Genesis 19:5 - The sin of Sodom
KJB - And they called unto Lot, and said unto him, where are the men which came into thee this night? Bring them out unto us, that we may know them.NIV - They called to Lot, "Where are the men who came to you tonight? Bring them out so that we can have sex with them."
Mollenkott, ITHMN, Page 57 - "... the Sodom story seems to be focusing on two specific evils: (1) violent gang rape and (2) inhospitality to the stranger."

Mollenkott, ITHMN, Page 59 & 60 - "Most scholars agree that in the fertility religions of Israel's neighbors, male cult prostitutes were employed for homosexual acts. The people who loved and served the God of Israel were strictly forbidden to have anything to do with such idolatry, and the Jewish men were commanded to never serve as temple prostitutes."
(Author's note: Clearly a male could be a shrine prostitute and not be a homosexual, but according to the dictionary a Sodomite is a homosexual.)

Such a person loves Jesus Christ and wants above all to acknowledge God in all of life, yet for some unknown reason feels drawn to someone of the same sex, for the sake of love rather than lust. Is it fair to describe that person as lustful or desirous of forgetting God's existence?"
I Corinthians 6:9 - Rejection of homosexual behavior

A note here to point out that this is the only place in the NIV where the word "homosexual" occurs. It is not clear from the context if this means heterosexuals who abuse homosexuals or homosexuals who abuse each other. See Dr. Mollenkott's explanation in the 1st Timothy comments following.
I Timothy 1:9 & 10
KJB - Knowing this, that the law is not made for righteous man, but for the lawless and disobedient, for the ungodly and for sinners, for unholy and profane, for murderers of fathers and murderers of mothers, for manslayers. Mollenkott, ITHMN, Page 67 - "Interpretations of these passages depends on two Greek words used in I Cor. 6:9 which have presented a problem for translators in the King James Version, they translated 'effeminate' and 'abusers of themselves with mankind.' In the Revised Standard Version of 1952, they were combined and rendered simply 'homosexuals,' which implied that all persons whose erotic interests were oriented to the same sex were by the very fact excluded from membership in the kingdom of God. But the original intent seems to have been to single out specific kinds of same-sex practices which were deplorable."
Jude 7 - Strange flesh
KJB - Even as Sodom and Gomorrah, and the cities about them in like manner, giving themselves over to fornication, and going after strange flesh, are set forth for an example, suffering the vengeance of eternal fire.NIV - In a similar way, Sodom and Gomorrah and the surrounding towns gave themselves up to sexual immorality and perversion. They serve as an example of those who suffer the punishment of eternal fire.
Mollenkott, ITHMN, Page 59 - "The unnatural lust" thus could, in the context, and in view of the apocryphal texts to which Jude made allusion, refer to a desire for sexual contact between human and heavenly beings.î
It would not be fair to say that all the people involved in producing the NIV favored homosexuality as an alternate lifestyle, but it is fair to say that those who were responsible for the final wordings were at least sympathetic to Dr. Mollenkott's cause. One only has to look at the treatment of sodomy in the NIV to reach this conclusion.
While many believe practicing homosexuals can be Christian, there are many others who have a different conviction about what the Bible says about sodomy. For this group, it is hardly acceptable to call Sodomites temple prostitutes, or to think of same-sex relationships as natural. These same people would take a viewpoint that God hates the sin of homosexuality and will bring judgment on those who live this kind of lifestyle.
The information presented here is not all-inclusive, but is intended to sound an alarm. If the NIV is your Bible of choice, it would be prudent to look closely in other areas as well, for there are many other subjects handled just as loosely as sodomy. Don't take anyone's word for what God says; Check it out! After all, He'll hold you alone responsible.

The editor of FICL has published a tirade against those who criticize his precious NNIV. His editorial, which was read over the phone to me, is full of accusations against anyone who disagrees with the decision to buy the NNIV and make billionaire Murdoch a few millions more.
The first print-run is over 1 million Bibles, so that means any book purchased is pure profit, minus the cost of paper and a few pigskins. The primary objection is that this translation is agenda-driven, not only on the feminazi side, but also in promoting the mythical view of the Bible.
They already have the RSV and its spawn for the mythical view. The RSV is the translation from the Commies at the National Council of Churches. The RSV translators suddenly discovered, after about 2800 years, that Isaiah 7:14 was not a prophecy of the Virgin Birth. Here is the miracle from God - drumroll - a young woman will have a son. Ta-da.
The NNIV has discovered that Adam is a myth. His name really means Mankind, says their footnote. I guess Eve is Womankind. Many verses are gone from the New Testament, but you never noticed with the Old NIV. Pipe down - the editor says you are destroying people's faith by questioning Whorely Mother WELS leaders (aka Church and Change, aka Fuller Alumni Association).
Congratulations, WELS members and pastors - for driving the NNIV cheerleading team to distraction. Vic Prange, who helmed the feminist hymnal changeover, is plenty sore, too. You are winning this round.
If you let the NNIV get approved, "Game over, man! Game over!" You will be training your kids in heathenism with the NNIV.

“We cannot commend the 2011 NIV to Southern Baptists or to the larger Christian community,” the resolution concluded.
Criticism over the update has been high ever since its inception, with opponents like the Council on Biblical Manhood and Womanhood – which support a complementarian view of manhood and womanhood – finding over 3,600 gender-related problems in the new version.

Pope Paul the Unlearned has started his own thread about Ichabod on LutherQueasy. He has three posts on that topic alone in one day. He must have been weaned too early, because nothing shows obsession more clearly than reading this blog simply to find more more posts to blog about.
Someone said, "Fame is a shuttlecock kept aloft by opposition," so I appreciate all the extra web attention.
How many Lutheran blogs have various would-be authors dedicated to this holy task?
I did reproduce an error in earlier posts. I gave McCain credit for three years as a nominal parish pastor while he worked with Herman Otten to get Al Barry elected Synod President. McCain's bio shows only two years in that position, carefully avoiding congregational work ever since.
A little bit of research shows almost the same wording used by Paul Without a Call, no matter who is the object of his wisdom. Someone who spent two extra years in seminary without earning a degree is rather special.
Some of you are thinking, "Oh, you mean his time-out and defenestration on the ALPB Online discussion forum?" Oh no, here is an example from a Roman Catholic, who ran into McCain's macro-wit. I do not mean giant wit, but saying the same thing every time, no matter what the topic is, regardless of the facts.

The Catholic blogger replied:
Nice try, but, um, no cigar. It is published by Sophia Institute Press, a very reputable and well known Catholic publishing house that specializes in classics (and I received an advance of $3000: that would be quite a feat indeed for a self-published book. Who would write the check, I wonder?). One would think that a "reviewer" could get his basic facts about the book reviewed straight, but no such luck.
This is in line with his [McCain's] stated antipathy to apologetics:
Perhaps we would do well to distinguish between apologetics and polemics. Lutherans have done polemics since the "we condemn" of the Lutheran Confessions. Apologetics? Not so much.
When I read Dave Armstrong's blog, or James White's blog, I frankly find myself getting bored, in a hurry. Both men are self-proclaimed and self-annointed [sic] "apologists" and yet they seem to spend a lot of their time attacking other apologists and arguing with how other apologists argue, and then debating who said what, about what, when, and where, etc. It is really finally absurd.
I think Lutherans much prefer simply to proclaim, and confess, and teach and let the truth speak for itself.
That is not to say that we do not do polemics. This is a perfectly fine and even necessary thing to do, but apologetics? Well, like I said, not so much.
It seems that Rev. McCain's impulse to finally mention me on his blog has something to do with a marked dislike of my person. On the same discussion thread (the next day) he "proclaimed":
By the way, this particular post and thread has set Dave "I'm a Roman Catholic apologist" Armstrong off on what can only be described as a temper tantrum becoming a three year old. It is however a very good illustration with the problem of most of this on-line "apologetics" work going on. Dave tried to bait me into an argument, one of his favorite tactics, and then failing to do that he didn't take kindly to some observations I made about his blog site and his apologetics methodologies and then the mud really started to fly.
Armstrong is a convert from what he calls "Evangelicalism" though admitted to be a member of an ELCA congregatio[n] at some point or another. Now, as is so often the case, he must breathlessly, with near desperation, "defend" Romanism against any perceived slight. The funny thing is that he can't see that the very things he finds as faults with others and how they express themselves, are all precisely the same way he conducts his "apologetics ministry" only at about a multiplying factor of ten.
It finally gives me a good case of the giggles.

They Have the Word, Moses and the Prophets
This Gospel obliterates any notion that God works apart from His Word. This is a parable used to express extremes, to make the lesson as clear as possible. For example, the poor man, who is despised, has a name, Lazarus. The rich man has no name, because he has been forgotten by heaven.
The two extremes are portrayed vividly, with ironic humor. The rich man feasts in great luxury every day and wears luxurious clothing. Purple was the beginning of the chemical industry. It was rare and reserved for the upper class, not that anyone else could afford it. One of the first supporters of the Church, Lydia, Acts 16, dealt with purple dye (derived from a shellfish).
We take an abundance of clothing for granted, but look at homes from the beginning of the 20th century. They had tiny closets or used wardrobes. They had few clothes. In the Louis Lamour novels, some men wear their Civil War uniforms because they had nothing else to wear. So the rich man not only had clothes but he had money to burn on the fanciest clothes possible, the best food possible.
This is another fetish of the rich – spending too much on food. When we lived in the right zip code, we got catalogs for over-priced food, such as steak butter for $16 a pound, back 20 years ago. Doubtless it was good, with a few extra flakes of seasoning in it, but that seemed a bit pricey for us. One company recently offered us cherries for $16 a pound. I always compare prices to meat prices. That was so high that I repeated the price back in shock. The cubicle saleslady said, “You don’t have to buy pounds. You can buy just two pounds.” I said, “Steak is less expensive.” That company is now in bankruptcy, no doubt precipitated by losing customers who spent all their money on needless luxuries.
The rich man had money to spare for food and clothing, but outside, Lazarus had none. He hoped for crumbs from the rich man’s table and obviously lay there in rags. Beggars seldom wear silk or purchase purple dye for their formal wear.
“Moreover the dogs licked his wounds.” Dogs are intuitive creatures. They may be in bad shape themselves, but they are instinctively protective of humans. If they find something wrong on their companion, they fix it by licking it. They also show affection the same way. I will say, “Look at Sassy Sue is curled up against you.” Sassy will respond with a tail wag and a lick.
Dogs are common, too, so they are despised, kicked, shooed away, and taken for granted. All our dogs are rescue dogs that no one wanted. All three were destined for elimination in a short time, so we gave them a home. Sassy Sue went from waiting in a cage at the pound to having her own blog, which is read all over the world. My classmates were discussing what a character Sassy is, and one of them said, “She has her own blog.” The Dairy Queen helper searched for the Sassy Sue blog and read it.
The irony is that Lazarus, the one favored in this parable, has only a dog for a companion. He is alone in the world, despised for his poverty and illness. Like a dog, he hopes for crumbs from the table. Whenever we eat anything, our three dogs go into their hope mode. They see us big, strange looking dogs, the alpha dogs who give them food. They are utterly dependent on us. Therefore, every crumb is accepted as an act of loving care, even a bit toast.
Lazarus had no job, no income, no prospects. The rich man should have cared for him out of love, since love is the first of the fruits of the Spirit.
But then the roles are reversed. Lazarus died and was carried home by the angels, into the bosom of Abraham. The expression means he was in the place of highest honor, next to Abraham in heaven. That can only mean he had faith in the Savior, since faith alone justifies and receives salvation from God.
In contrast, the rich man went to Hell and suffered great torment there. The man who spared no crumbs or clothes for Lazarus now wanted Father Abraham to send the beggar to dip his finger in water and give him some comfort. This is quite important. He does not ask for an angel or for Abraham himself, but for Lazarus. Thus in the Kingdom of God, the believer has great importance, even though he is nothing in the eyes of the world. In fact, what we should never do in view anything in the eyes of the world.
So many ministers talk about their parking lots and their new additions. Some even have new church buildings. In one case, a sedate old church spent a small fortune putting the altar in the back and facing the pews the other way. I said, “You can put on your resume – I turned this church around.” He liked that idea.
Some might see the irony of this parable at this time. I know about two families where they have been excommunicated for questioning false doctrine. Rather than offer the comfort of the Gospel, as Luther taught it, as the Book of Concord confirmed, the Lutheran Enthusiasts refused to discuss the issues and chose expulsion as the solution. As one excommunicator said, “Passionate about sharing Jesus in the Valley.” He plagiarizes Craig Groeschel, a Methodist. The other excommunicator said, “We will meet with you, but you cannot talk.” He is starting an expensive new worship site, almost next door to a brother pastor. Both excommunicators are friends and Church and Change fanatics.
Father Abraham told the rich but nameless man:
25 But Abraham said, Son, remember that thou in thy lifetime receivedst thy good things, and likewise Lazarus evil things: but now he is comforted, and thou art tormented. 26 And beside all this, between us and you there is a great gulf fixed: so that they which would pass from hence to you cannot; neither can they pass to us, that would come from thence.
There is no solution after life is over, in spite of what the Roman Catholics teach. They grasped the meaning of this parable and filled the gap. What Abraham could not deliver, they offered in abundance – comfort earned by works. If the whole family prays for the Godfather, he will get time off in Purgatory. No one knows how much time he will serve, but they are given little guidebooks for how much each act is worth. Thus the Vatican enforces the opposite of this message of the parable.
The rich man is a good salesman, which may be the secret of his worldly wealth. The first rejection leads to another request.
Send Lazarus to my brothers, so they have a chance to repent and believe. He already knew this was impossible but he asked anyway.
28 For I have five brethren; that he may testify unto them, lest they also come into this place of torment.
Abraham said, “They have the Gospel already in the Old Testament Scripture. They have Moses and the prophets. Let your brothers hear them.”
That was the second rejection, so the rich man asked a third time. Someone rising from the dead would get their attention.
Abraham countered the final objection, “If they do not hear the Gospel in the Old Testament, someone risen from the dead will not persuade them either.”
Thus everything accomplished by God is done through His Word. His Law shows us our true nature, and His Gospel comforts and strengthens us. We may be the poorest of the poor in the eyes of God, but we receive the spiritual wealth of God through faith.
"Let us learn more and more to look upon the Lutheran Church with the right kind of spiritual eyes: it is the most beautiful and glorious Church; for it is adorned with God's pure Word. This adornment is so precious, that even though an orthodox congregation were to consist of very poor people - let us say nothing but woodchoppers - and met in a barn (as the Lord Christ also lay here on earth in a barn, on hay and straw), every Christian should much, much rather prefer to affiliate himself with this outwardly so insignificant congregation, rather than with a heterodox congregation, even if its members were all bank presidents and assembled in a church built of pure marble. Let us be sure that our flesh, and the talk of others does not darken the glory of the orthodox Church, or crowd it out of our sight."
