Luther - On Faith

9. Behold this good inclination or comforting trust, or free presumption toward God, or whatever you may call it, in the Scriptures is called Christian faith and a good conscience,

which man must have if he desires to be saved. But it is not obtained by human works and precepts, as we shall see in this example, and without such a heart no work is good. Therefore be on your guard, there are many lecturers who want to teach faith and conscience, and know less about them than a common blockhead. They think it is a sleepy, lazy thing in the soul, that it is enough for the heart to believe that God is God. But here you observe what a thoroughly living and powerful thing faith is. It creates wholly a new heart, a new man, who expects all grace from God. Therefore it urges to walk, to stand, makes bold to cry and pray in every time of trouble.

Steadfast Lutherans » Benke participates in worship service with ELCA, according to ELCA news release (by Pr. Charles Henrickson): "Benke had previously participated in an interfaith prayer service on September 9, 1998. On October 22, 1998, he signed a public apology in which he stated:

“My participation in this service was a direct violation of the Holy Scriptures and the Lutheran Confessions, and consequently, violation of the Constitution, Bylaws and doctrinal resolutions of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod. I also recognize that my participation in this interfaith prayer service was a violation of my duties and responsibilities as an elected officer of The Lutheran Church-Missouri Synod.

“While well-intended, what I did was wrong. I therefore sincerely and publicly apologize to the Synod for my actions in this connection. I assure the Synod that I will not repeat this error in the future by participating as an officiant in ecumenical services.”"

GJ - McCain/Barry "disciplined" Benke the first time, so McCain/Harrison will do as much this time. Missourians should quit belly-aching, as long as they continue to exist in non-declared union with ELCA via Thrivent insurance and a host of activities.

Walton Family Foundation gave more than $1.2 billion to Crystal Bridges in 2010 | NWAonline: "Walton Family Foundation gave more than $1.2 billion to Crystal Bridges in 2010
By The Arkansas Democrat-Gazette
Posted: September 23, 2011 at 11:29 a.m.

The Walton Family Foundation announced Friday that it gave more than $1.2 billion to Crystal Bridges Museum of American Art in 2010, or about $400 million more than what the museum's executive director announced earlier this year.

Don Bacigalupi said at a news conference in May that the museum had received a trio of endowment gifts from the foundation totaling $800 million to support operations, art acquisitions and future capital costs.

On Friday, the foundation said it also gave the museum $403 million for artwork, general operating expenses and construction. The museum — founded in 2005 by Alice L. Walton, who sits on the foundation started by her father, the late-Wal-Mart Stores Inc. founder Sam M. Walton — is scheduled to open Nov. 11."

It’s important to remember that the left has to lie to “win”. They convince enough people with their poisoned lies, to “win”, but it is a fragile victory.

I am a Presbyterian, a member of PCUSA, a mainline denomination that has for decades been a battleground in the war. The left “won” a battle over ordaining homosexuals this year, with soothing words. The denomination is facing hundreds of faithful churches leaving. They only had to win once, sound familiar?

They want faithful congregations to stay, and promise that they will be left in “peace” as long as they don’t rock the boat, and pay their tax. Sound familiar?"

Hell-questioning pastor leaving Mich. megachurch - US news - msnbc.com

Hell-questioning pastor leaving Mich. megachurch - US news - msnbc.com: "GRANDVILLE, Mich. —

An evangelical pastor who stirred firestorm this year with his book that questions traditional Christian beliefs about hell is leaving his Michigan megachurch to share his message with a broader audience.
Only on msnbc.com

A statement Thursday on the website of Mars Hill church in Grandville, near Grand Rapids, says Rob Bell will discuss the decision Sunday.

Bell's book "Love Wins" questions the traditional Christian belief that a select number of believers will spend eternity in heaven while everyone else is tormented in hell. He has said he wrote the book because the Christian message that God is love seems to have gotten lost.

Mars Hill has grown in 12 years under his leadership. He has made online videos and written other books that have been popular among younger evangelicals."

Leader of Mars Hill, Rob Bell, is resigning from his church and going on a speaking tour due to the controversy over his book that rejected the traditional belief in hell and embraced universalism:

I'm so tired of metro-sexuals. These overly-coiffed sissies would have scorned John the Baptist because he wasn't one the kids with the pumped up kicks.

Good riddance, Rob.

p.s. If the WELS ever boots Jeske can someone please prohibit him from a speaking tour?

The Authorities Listed -
Let's Not Turn It Upside-down

Fuller doctrine for fuller wallets, the motto of Church and Change.

Someone, perhaps Pastor Rydecki, listed the authorities in doctrine this way.
  1. The Scriptures.
  2. The Book of Concord.
  3. The orthodox theologians - Luther, Chemnitz, Melanchthon, Chytraeus, Gerhard.
  4. Synodical writers.
  • The Scriptures are the very Word of God, His revealed will, inerrant and infallible. The Bible judges all books, so we always return to the source when a doctrinal matter is being disputed.
  • The Book of Concord is not revelation, but man's witness to the revelation of the Holy Spirit. These Lutheran Confessions place the Reformation within the continuous orthodox tradition of Christian teaching.
  • The orthodox theologians are the finest Biblical theologians of the Christian faith, but their extensive writings do not equal or supplant the Lutheran Confessions. One issue is brevity. The other issue is the agreement of all the parties about their harmony (concordia) of doctrine.
  • Synodical writers are useful in many ways, but they do not equal the Concordists or the orthodox theologians. They cannot be used to override the meaning of the Book of Concord--or more importantly--the Word of God.
In this Age of Apostasy, the worst errors and practices are upheld in the name of recently deceased synodical leaders. In some cases they are alive but considered the walking dead: dead to the Word, dead to the Means of Grace, dead to correction. The false teachers tie them up in knots, saying such things as: 1. He is my classmate. 2. He is a professor. Are you saying the seminary has false teachers? 3. Are you saying you would not commune with him? 4. He is a nice guy. 5. This is a gray area of Scripture. 6. Have you been reading Ichabod?

Many of these leaders are unspeakably evil. They watch members and pastors being abused, either emotionally, sexually, or physically - and they do nothing. They are helpless. They are powerless, that is, until they get a chance to defend their abusive buddies. Suddenly they are braver than lions with the claws of a tiger.

Words Convey Thought, So Sloppy Language
Betrays False Doctrine

AC V has left a new comment on your post "Luther Rocks: Y'All Need to Check This Out...Serio...":

Question:

What is it that enables believers to go to heaven? Is it that they have been forgiven of their sins? Or, is it because Christ's righteousness covers them by faith?

Since we continue to sin (cf. 1 John 1:8), we are saved because of Christ's righteousness being ours by faith, not because we are completely forgiven of sin by Christ on the cross 2,000 years ago.

What we need to preach in and hear from our pulpits are terminology and illustrations that teach this truth. Too often we hear blanket phrases such as "all your sins were forgiven on the cross, fully, freely, forever" thus giving the impression that we are completely sinless. The danger is that we won't feel the need for Word and Sacrament in order to strengthen our faith through the forgiveness of our sins that Word and Sacrament effects. Currently we hear that Word and Sacrament assures us that we have been forgiven (by the cross 2,000 years ago), not that we are actually real-time through the reception of Word and Sacrament forgiven of our sins.

GJ - Ministers seldom express something they do not believe in, so close questioning of their doctrine is essential. Some will avoid topics--like abortion--because they do not want to end their jobs by offending someone. Others will use ambiguous language so that one side will understand the words one way while another group will hear what they want. "Error loves ambiguities," as Krauth said.

"Assurance of forgiveness" is a bastard, born of an unholy union between Pietism and rationalism.

"All your sins were forgiven on the cross" - that is clearly associated with the cowardly Universalism promoted by UOJ. As anyone can see from the Book of Concord, atonement is not the same as the declaration of forgiveness, justification by faith. Instead, the Luther-an (deliberate dash) pastors should be saying with Luther, "The Word of the Gospel conveys Christ and His forgiveness to us. Believing is forgiveness."

ChurchMouse Endorses Tim Buelow Comment

churchmousec (http://churchmousec.wordpress.com/) has left a new comment on your post "Intrepid WELS Members and Pastors Supporting Justi...":

Timothy Buelow said it best in that exchange, and this is what clergy really should be emphasising:

'... unbelief is not simply some little thing, viz. the lack of belief. It is an active, militant, ungrateful, offensive, disgusting, miserable active sin of rejecting what Christ has done for them. God is most just in sending to hell whoever dares to spit in the face of Christ by not appreciating what he has done, and believing in Him who is Love personified and defined, and trusting in the atonement he has attained at the cost of His own innocent blood.

'Again: Unbelief is not the lack of faith. It's the active sin of spitting God in the face, deeming Christ's sacrifice useless, telling the Holy Spirit to take a hike, mocking the revealed will of God in Scripture, etc., etc., etc. And THIS is not worthy of damnation?!!'

How many 'damnation' or 'condemnation' verses are there in the New Testament? Many. I used some in one of my posts about Rob Bell earlier in the year. Have come up with more since in my study of John's Gospel. Also, blaspheming the Holy Spirit is grounds for damnation.

So, how anyone can come up with universal justification is beyond belief.

In other news, I read on an Anglican discussion board the other day this gem: 'We all know that NO ONE goes to hell!' They were serious.

To these people I say, 'Folks, pull out your Bibles and start reading! When you've finished, start again.'
