WELS Conference of Presidents Has an Annual Deluxe Vacation in the Tropics

Black macaques in Indonesia
The Missouri Synod is not alone in having a luxury vacation for their mini-popes.

WELS has one every year in the Tropics, when it costs the most.

Fie on goodness. The WELS leaders lap up the cream. They devour the living of widows and orphans.

They will probably congratulate Buchholz for being a stalwart leader of UOJ Enthusiasm.

They will give Engelbrecht Humperdink tips on plagiarism.

They will give Mark Schroeder new advice on how to act helpless.

VirtueOnline - News - Exclusives - Same Sex Blessing Spreads throughout The Episcopal Church:

Same Sex Blessing fever spreads throughout The Episcopal Church
More than two thirds of the domestic dioceses give their blessing to partnered same gender relationships

By David Virtue with Mary Ann Mueller
www.virtueonline.org
November 28, 2012

Since The Episcopal General Convention passed A049 at last July's General Convention in Indianapolis, the trickle of Episcopal dioceses that have authorized Same Sex Blessings has now become a veritable flood. According to Virtueonline's exhaustive research, 69 domestic dioceses have decided to fully embrace and allow for the provisional Same Sex Blessing ceremony to be celebrated within their borders.

Virtueonline called each diocese or churches within the diocese to ascertain if SSB was permissible; checking diocesan and congregational websites for their posted information on SSB; and researching the Internet for published stories about Episcopal bishops who have announced their intensions - for or against - concerning a pastoral response for partnered same-gender relationships.

VOL learned those dioceses giving a nod to SSB include: Arizona, Arkansas, Bethlehem, California, Central New York, Central Pennsylvania, Chicago, Colorado, Connecticut, Delaware, East Tennessee, Eastern Michigan, Eastern Oregon, Easton, El Camino Real, TEC Fort Worth, Georgia, Hawaii, Idaho, Indianapolis, Iowa, Kansas, Kentucky, Long Island, Los Angeles, Louisiana, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Newark, North Carolina, Northern California, Northern Michigan, Northwestern Pennsylvania, Ohio, Olympia, Oregon, Pennsylvania, TEC Quincy, Rio Grande, Rochester, San Diego, TEC San Joaquin, Southeast Florida, Southern Ohio, Southern Virginia, Southwestern Virginia, Spokane, Texas, Upper South Carolina, Utah, Vermont, Virginia, Washington DC, West Missouri, West Tennessee, Western Michigan, Western New York, Western North Carolina, and Wyoming.

Even though these dioceses permit or will be permitting SSB, there are some tight guidelines. These guidelines vary from diocese to diocese. In some dioceses, the bishop is the final determiner on which couples can participate in the ceremony. Some dioceses allow for SSB in certain churches only. So there is a wide variation in how SSB is being implemented throughout The Episcopal Church.

As Advent approaches, the 19 dioceses which said that SSB is not a part of their liturgical offerings included: Alabama, Alaska, Albany Central Florida, Dallas, East Carolina, Eau Claire, Florida, Fond du Lac, Mississippi, Montana, North Dakota, Northern Indiana, Oklahoma, Springfield, Tennessee, West Texas, Western Kansas, and Western Louisiana.

VirtueOnline - News. Laity Turn Down Women Bishops in the Church of England!

The agony - holding back the tears of pain, betrayal, and rage.

VirtueOnline - News:

And so it came to pass that the laity in the Church of England rose up and declared they would not have women bishops to reign over them. The vote was admittedly only six votes, but six votes are six votes. The issue cannot be revisited until a new Synod is elected in 2015.

Liberals and progressives along with homosexuals and lesbians are in "tears" and "agony" over this defeat. So is the Archbishop of Canterbury Rowan Williams and the soon to be Archbishop Justin Welby who both spoke up in favor of the measure. It was a bitter pill for Williams to swallow as he is out the door in five weeks, another example of his failed incumbency. His legacy lies in ruins. It's a bad start for Welby.

Williams said in the aftermath of that decision, the church risks being seen as "willfully blind" to the demands from wider British society; it must do away with institutional and theological sexism.

"We have, to put it very bluntly, a lot of explaining to do," he told the General Synod. "Whatever the motivation for voting yesterday, whatever the theological principle on which people acted and spoke, the fact remains that a great deal of this discussion is not intelligible to our wider society. Worse than that, it seems as if we are willfully blind to some of the trends and priorities of that wider society."

He added, "We have some explaining to do, we have as a result of yesterday undoubtedly lost a measure of credibility in our society."

What sort of explaining to society is it that the church is supposed to do exactly? The church is a counter culture. We are told not to "conform to this present age", we are not to be lovers of the world system, we stand in opposition not apposition to society. The church is not supposed to embrace the mood of a transient culture; to do so will soon enough make it a widow. He makes it sound as though it was a power play and he and his fellow liberals lost.

Extra Nos: Hunnius proves Steadfast Waltherians are Huberites

Extra Nos: Hunnius proves Steadfast Waltherians are Huberites:

Hunnius proves Steadfast Waltherians are Huberites
UOJers, all of them, teach that there is a justification that has occurred 2000 years ago to the whole human race. Since this occurred before you were born, then this occurred outside of faith. They call this objective justification.

What is the favorite Scripture they use to promote this?

It is Romans 4:25. They believe right here in this verse, St. Paul is teaching a justification that occurred without any reference to faith

 Here is an example.

1.) From again Steadfast Waltherian group found here, Jim Pierce writing:

In wrapping up my answer, we can talk about the entire human race, or the world, being justified—just as the Scriptures do (Ro 4:25)—as the action God took in response to Jesus’ resurrection from the dead where the Law is concerned
2.) From my interaction with one adherent of UOJ:

ME: "Joe it is different because Brett and I do not believe in the starting point that there is justification that has happened FOR all men without faith or without regard to faith. That is difference. The difference is that we do not posit or assert a universal justification."
Joe: You are speaking against Romans 4:25.

3.) Again from a post just recently by a Steadfast Waltherian blogger found here. To prove the existence of an objective justification that occurred outside of faith, the blogging pastor says this (apparently taken from Francis Pieper):

Romans 4:25: He was delivered over to death for our sins and was raised to life for our justification. “To refer to the words: Who was raised again for our justification,” to the so-called subjective justification, which takes place by faith, not only weakens the force of the words, but also violates the context.”3

It is evident just from the sampling on how Romans 4:25 is being used that without a doubt, UOJers in general and the Steadfast Waltherians in particular believe in a justification that occurred without reference to faith.

What does Aegidius Hunnius say?

Hunnius :
Thesis 6
Hence Paul, when he expressly discusses justification in Romans 3 and 4, does not know of a justification apart from faith, and especially as Galatians 2 plainly says, "Man is not justified except by faith in Jesus Christ."

Episcopal Conservative Gives Some Historical Perspective

Bow, bow to the Episcopal PB Katie Schori.

                                                                                                             December 2012
Dear VOL Friend and Loyal Supporter,
In 1979 I wrote my first editorial as Managing editor of the Virginia CHURCHMAN. It was titled Gay is Not Okay. Needless to say, my stay in the diocese was short-lived. At the time I was dubbed extreme, shrill and strident.

Who would have thought that 33 years later The Episcopal Church would have openly gay and lesbian bishops, even more closeted homosexual bishops, and now a growing number of transgendered priests in Episcopal pulpits! A public bathroom at the recent Indianapolis General Convention was marked “Neutral Gender Restroom”. One can only imagine what a St. Paul, an Athanasius, a Cranmer or a Wesley would have had to say looking at this and then exploding with wrath and indignation at how this violated Scripture, Tradition, Reason, the righteousness and character of God and the holiness we are called to put on – however imperfectly we may wear that mantle.

Who would have thought that entire dioceses would, in time, up and leave (the most recent being South Carolina), following The Episcopal Church’s sordid consecration of a homosexual bishop! After that, they would watch as the small trickle of Episcopalians leaving TEC become a massive flood leading to the formation of a new Anglican missionary province in North America (ACNA) that is recognized by a large number of Global South provinces and archbishops who represent the vast majority of the Communion’s 77 million Anglicans.

A decade ago no one would have believed this possible. So it has become. The end is still not in sight. Today millions of dollars are being spent litigating for properties that rightfully belong to those who built and paid for them and who worshipped and honored God in them. Archbishops in provinces of the Anglican Communion will no longer sit at the same table with Episcopal Church leaders. Still the Episcopal Church stumbles blindly forward hoping it can steer a way through the ecclesiastical minefield offering canards of inclusivity and d

The Global South has distanced itself from North American Anglican jurisdictions they believe have become heterodox in faith and morals. A new Archbishop of Canterbury could be a game changer for the Anglican Communion starting in 2013.

ELCA PB Mark Hanson and Episcopal PB Schori
have decimated their denominations.
WELS and Missouri work with both groups - happily, joyfully, greedily -
through Thrivent Insurance.

---

GJ - Virtue Online has been my reliable source of Episcopal news for some years. Years before the 2009 vote in ELCA, I was publishing VO and asking why ELCA was still together,

Hanson and Schori have worked together to ruin whatever was left of their denominations. I was impressed that current Episcopal bishops were willing to risk everything and take their dioceses out of the denomination.

Courts have set aside the law to let Schori grab property that belonged to congregations long before The Episcopal Church existed as a corporation. That said, the Presiding Bishop does not own any congregation's property. But the Great Dragon went ahead and stole whatever she could and slandered her own bishops. She even took out a large loan against the headquarters building to use as cash for endless lawsuits.

This matters to "conservative" Lutherans because they support continued religious work with ELCA and The Episcopal Church. Missouri and WELS are in bed with the gay activists and loving it.

Campus Ministry Is No Place To Vent:
How Synods Abuse the Trust Placed in the Leadership

bruce-church (https://bruce-church.myopenid.com/) has left a new comment on your post "How Did WELS DP Buchholz Excuse Foreclosing on the...":

That Rydecki's church was found to be in noncompliance on the CEF loan is not surprising. Recall that in the LCMS, Minnesota-South district terminated the Minneapolis campus ministry rental agreement simply because they had installed a dryer with vent so they could home dry-clean their altar vestments and eliminate dry cleaning bills. ("Dry cleaning at home" is why there are so few dry cleaners left in business, in addition to the more casual attire seen everywhere, even worn by clergy at altars and pulpits!)

Some name-withheld person told Rev. Jackson it was hard to believe the hammer could fall on Rev. Rydecki's church so fast, citing the time needed for due process. Well, I'm not surprised at all, since I've seen the hammer fall pretty fast in the WELS when someone pushes the right buttons, or has no political support. All it takes is a few phone calls. In the WELS and LCMS they are proud to say they'll "have your back," that is  - unless something someone says or does is indefensible. Then they starting define "indefensible" downward.

DP Jon-Boy Buchholz Got Away with Tyranny,
Just Like ELS SP John Moldstad Before,
Plus Many More Like Them

Brett Meyer has left a new comment on your post "How Did WELS DP Buchholz Excuse Foreclosing on the...":

This letter should be read by every (W)ELS member.

http://ichabodthegloryhasdeparted.blogspot.com/2012/10/letter-to-wels-district-president-jon.html

The (W)ELS has condoned DP Pastor Jon Buchholz' applying the label of heretic, then the excommunication of faithful Pastor Paul Rydecki from fellowship in the WELS.

Rydecki to Buchholz, "But in true papistic fashion, you have refused from the beginning even to admit the possibility that you could have erred or that the WELS doctrinal statements may be wrong. You called me to repentance for preaching that “all who trust in Christ are absolved before God’s courtroom.” You stood in front of my congregation and called me a false teacher for teaching the Gospel that sinners are justified by faith alone in Christ, and now you have suspended me from the ministerium of the WELS."

Are the actions of DP Buchholz, which have been condoned by the WELS, ELS and LCMS, in opposition to Christ and His Church when Scripture and the Lutheran Confessions only teach that sinners are justified by faith alone in Christ? Yes.

an·ti·christ/ˈantēˌkrīst/Noun:
1.A great personal opponent of Christ who will spread evil throughout the world before being conquered at Christ's Second Coming.
2.A person or force seen as opposing Christ or the Christian Church.

***

GJ -  The aggression of bullies like Buchholz is not so shocking, given the extensive cult training forced upon the supposed elite in WELS.

But the passive surrender of the clergy and many laity - that is surprising. They should be driving Buchholz out of town, baiting him with dogs and pelting him with manure - for teaching against the Gospel in the name of the Gospel.

Luther was quite explicit about lazybones pride-swells like Jon-boy, who has to tell everyone who his relatives were, as if he picked them hisself.

---

Brett Meyer has left a new comment on your post "DP Jon-Boy Buchholz Got Away with Tyranny, Just Li...":

Correction to the post title - DP Buchholz didn't get away with tyranny.

Because, to date, he has rejected faithful Pastor Rydecki's call to repentance and has refused to return to the Scriptural and Confessional Gospel of the Lord Jesus Christ. His heart is hardened against Christ and the one true Gospel and... actually Hunnius spoke about Buchholz's huberianism years ago (Intrepids that are sympathetic to those UOJists who hold authority in the Synods may want to look away at this point or suck on a tablespoon of sugar):

Hunnius refuting the UOJ of Huberite DP Jon Buchholz, ”We are pleased to explain with clear words what our sentence is regarding his points, and to lay the foundation of Scriptural support and, by the grace of God, to fortify our position on all sides in such a way that not only will Huber be completely unable to defend against it, but not even the gates of hell will be able to prevail against it. Nor shall we hesitate to defend publicly the doctrine contained in these propositions, either in solemn colloquy or also, if it seems appropriate, in general council against this insolent and insulting Thraso and, by the grace of God, so to stop up his impudent mouth (which knows how to spew forth nothing but the most shameful lies) that learned and unlearned alike may carefully observe who that spirit is by whose dictation Huber vomits forth his writings in the Christian world and truly tries to sell and thrust his belchings and vomitings upon all people even rulers in place of the heavenly truth, to the extent that his gift for impudence is able.”
Theses Opposed To Huberianism, Page 6

Those who pervert the Gospel of Christ stand condemned by God.

Matthew 12:37, “For by thy words thou shalt be justified, and by thy words thou shalt be condemned.”
Matthew 18:6-7, “But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea. Woe unto the world because of offences! For it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!”

How Did WELS DP Buchholz Excuse Foreclosing on the Loan to Rydecki's Congregation?

Free foreign vacations are included in the perks.

The discussion on your blog about the CEF call on the loan in NM has sparked my interest.

I have a recent (2012) set of loan approval documents from the CEF.  There is nothing in their loan approval about being a WELS church.  There are just some weasel words regarding being in agreement on Ministry.

So, I am not really sure how the mission board could have met and then aligned with the CEF in just a few weeks to decide that the NM church was not in unity regarding ministry.

I think is it ridiculous to presume that the Mission Board met and the CEF all in the matter of a couple of weeks? And were in complete agreement…

14. Cancellation:

WELS CEF reserves the right to cancel this commitment and terminate the obligations hereunder at

any time if any of the following occurs:

a. Rejection of ministry plan by WELS Board for Home Missions.

b. Congregation fails to comply with any of the requirements of this commitment.

c. Defects in title to the property are discovered.

d. A filing against the congregation in any circuit court for any reason.

e. Any substantial adverse change in the condition of the property or in the financial condition of

the congregation.

Feel free to use the above information as you wish.

Rydecki is above,

GJ - Someone from the Arizona-California WELS district told me that Buchholz was threatening foreclosure on the New Mexico congregation the moment the congregation voted to leave the false-teaching WELS.

It is a matter of public record that Buchholz promised the congregation, when he was there, to continue discussing the topic of justification.

Instead, the lying DP sent an email or letter telling Rydecki that he was kicked out.

Some might quibble about excommunication, but would any of the timid rabbits in that district dare to commune Pastor Paul Rydecki?

Please send a list of those who would defy the raging DP.

Yes, justification by faith is settled doctrine:
consult the Scriptures and the Confessions.

Garden Plans Start in the Fall and Winter.
Birds and Squirrels

The pileated woodpecker is rarely seen.
Ours posed for our guests, feasting on the wood borers from a dying oak.
The oak tree had to be cut down.

I know people are interested in Creation, because the pileated woodpecker post is one of the all time favorites since June of 1970. It has been read almost 4,000 times.

One wit suggested including donkeys, birds, and kittens into posts, to make sure it is popular, no matter what the main topic.

The temperature hit 77 degrees yesterday, in spite of the December date. Sassy celebrated by finding some horse manure in a garden and rolling in it. She was quite pleased with herself. It was not the older, sweeter composted horse manure but the tangy, fresh, loaded-with-nitrogen-compounds kind. She had an outside bath so she could be trusted inside for a Lemon Verbena bath. She was suitably contrite, although I distrust the sincerity of a drama queen like her.

One of my first jobs in the new house was putting up the squirrel-proof bird feeder. The squirrels in Bella Vista had it figured out after one year, so I was giving up on it. I would have left it in place, except I figured the Springdale squirrels were too far away to have received training from the Bella Vista rodents.

The feeder is placed near the bedroom window, where we can enjoy it in the mornings and evenings, the favorite times for bird feeding. We also have a watering station outside for Sassy, but that will serve the birds and other creatures to some extent. A large clay dish, for underneath plants, will be the birdbath. I hate to spend money to buy a hardware store birdbath that is little more than an elevated ceramic dish. Two dollars for one or 30 for the other? Not much of a decision.

We have two dead trees and four living ones in the grassy, fenced backyard. Dead trees are ideal for birds. They love to have extra perches for observing ground movement and potential food. They feel safe from most predators there. They are natural feeding stations. I will be buying suet again, assuming we are too urban for raccoons. A dead tree is a good place for extra food. I like to place food around the house and create a bird habitat. It does not take much time or money, just a little attention now and then.

We have some good areas for gardening. The front will feature a row of Double Delight roses. The back garden will have potatoes and some other favorites. So - I am starting to compost for the spring.

A compost bin is easy to create. Just take a length of cheap chicken wire and form a cylinder. I will probably buy about 10 to 12 feet. I will place it on the ground and begin filling it with leaves, grass, and organic material. The bottom is open to the soil and grass, so those creatures have easy access to a supermarket of warm, wet food all winter. The top and sides are open to air and rain.

Dog and cat manure do not go into compost, because those pets can be intermediate hosts for some unpleasant creatures. Cow, horse, and rabbit manure are good additions, but grass and other green materials will also supply nitrogen compounds to speed up decomposition. Fresh grass will heat up and speed up a compost pile. It is worthwhile to take a pile of fresh grass and see what happens and observe how hot it gets from the bacteria that heat it up. I have seen "steam" rising from decomposing grass.

Leaves and wood by-products can bind up nitrogen but they do not rob the compost of nitrogen, as some imagine. Leaves and wood use the nitrogen to decompose and then release it. One study showed that wood adds to total soil fertility. So does clay, which is good for the transfer of minerals. Clay, if handled well, is the richest of soils.

All soils benefit from large increases of humus (organic material) from manure and compost. Sandy, loam, and clay soils become more fertile and support a larger earthworm population. Richer soils attract more birds, and birds reduce pests. Therefore, simply keeping the free organic material in a yard will increase its production and beauty in time. No gardener has ever said, "I have too much compost."

In Midland, I was the guy who collected as much grass and leaves as I could from neighbors. I either mulched or composted what I collected. Everyone smirked until the Silver Queen white corn grew six feet tall and ripened. Then my neighbors asked, "How is that sweet corn doing?" I was happy to share it and tell them how they were eating corn planted in four feet of compost, a goldmine of balanced chemicals and soil prepared by an army of earthworms.

Use shiny 8" chimney pipe slid over a post for a cheap baffle to keep squirrels off feeders on posts, or fit over ledges to stop squirrels from using ledges as a diving platform (the chimney pipe opened up lengthwise can attach itself to ledges with its spring action). If they can't get a good grip, they can't jump as well, since unlike humans, squirrels need a grip to make long jumps.

I found that an upside-down 5-gallon pail fits snugly over a 3-hole cinder block, and that serves as a nice firm base for a bird bath.

A submersible de-icer can be had for $30. They only heat the water up to just about freezing, so the heater won't crack pottery bird baths, nor fry plastic bird baths, nor use a lot of electricity. The heater element has a couple bumps on it to keep it off the bottom of whatever it is placed in. Buy a cheap timer so it only runs from 8AM to 4:30PM when the birds are out. The larger watt heaters are best because the 75 watt ones may need hours to work, and if the birds check out the water and find it frozen, they won't come back as much. For safety, use a GFCI adapter if your outside outlet doesn't have GFCI built in:

Moving Memories - Books To Keep

Father Mapple preached from the prow of a ship

The Gregory Peck movie was scary and strange
for children.
We have settled down enough in our new home to enjoy some normal days, knowing where the essentials are. We moved to downsize our rent and be closer to higher education work, since Bella Vista is north of the population center of Northwest Arkansas.

I divided my library into three sections:

  1. Books to keep,
  2. Books to sell or give away.
  3. Books that need mailing.

The books to keep are:
Luther's Sermons - the old red 8 volume Lenker set - my favorite reading in the car and at doctors' offices.
Luther's Galatians Commentary - Kregel edition.
Concordia Triglotta - Sassy chewed on it, but the binding stood up to her hunger.
All Martin Chemnitz books - Examination, Enchiridion, Two Natures of Christ, Lord's Supper.
Moby Dick - The novel that is not a novel.
The Wind in the Willows
Dickens - A Christmas Carol.

Many great books are digital now and easy to call up and use, such as Luther's works.

I lost track of how many boxes of books I have gathered and given away, perhaps 50 boxes. I am not sure. I look for bargains and give them away to friends and students.

IL was rather mild when Pr. Rydecki was kicked out. Frankly, the mildness is due to the fact that they are not so convinced that UOJ is false doctrine.

Nobody gives credit to Dr. Greg, yet it was here at Ichabod I first heard the rattling of the cage known as UOJ. Where did I first hear of UOJ being possibly wrong? It was at Ichabod. Using again the Scripture and the Confessions, and a bit of honesty, it can not be denied that the UOJ passages used to support UOJ are not based on exegesis, but based in eisegesis by none NT experts. Pieper being one of them.

Nobody gives credit to Ichabod and those that do, still remain anonymous. What is that but politics?

The Hymn # 657            Beautiful Savior            4:24

KJV Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we believed. 12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light. 13 Let us walk honestly, as in the day; not in rioting and drunkenness, not in chambering [lewdness] and wantonness, not in strife and envying. 14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

KJV Matthew 21:1 And when they drew nigh unto Jerusalem, and were come to Bethphage, unto the mount of Olives, then sent Jesus two disciples, 2 Saying unto them, Go into the village over against you, and straightway ye shall find an ass tied, and a colt with her: loose them, and bring them unto me. 3 And if any man say ought unto you, ye shall say, The Lord hath need of them; and straightway he will send them. 4 All this was done, that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the prophet, saying, 5 Tell ye the daughter of Sion, Behold, thy King cometh unto thee, meek, and sitting upon an ass, and a colt the foal of an ass. 6 And the disciples went, and did as Jesus commanded them, 7 And brought the ass, and the colt, and put on them their clothes, and they set him thereon. 8 And a very great multitude spread their garments in the way; others cut down branches from the trees, and strawed them in the way. 9 And the multitudes that went before, and that followed, cried, saying, Hosanna to the Son of David: Blessed is he that cometh in the name of the Lord; Hosanna in the highest.

First Sunday in Advent - The Collects of Veit Dietrich

Lord God, heavenly Father, we thank Thee, we bless and praise Thee forever, that Thou didst send Thy Son to rule over us poor sinners, who for our transgressions did justly deserve to remain in the bondage of sin and Satan, and didst give us in Him a meek and righteous King, who by His death became our Savior from sin and eternal death: We beseech Thee so to enlighten, govern and direct us by Thy Holy Spirit, that we may ever remain faithful to this righteous King and Savior, and not, after the manner of the world, be offended with His humble form and despised word, but, firmly believing in Him, obtain eternal salvation; through the same, Thy beloved Son, Jesus Christ, our Lord, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

The Night Is Far Spent

KJV Romans 13:11 And that, knowing the time, that now it is high time to awake out of sleep: for now is our salvation nearer than when we  [GJ – first] believed.

I remember people wondering how long things could go on like this, over 20 years ago. Now it looks like a golden age in comparison. Paul faced the same kind of tumult and confusion.

Luther’s commentary on Galatians 4:17 following reads like an essay on the Lutheran Church today. Those comments are completely in harmony with this Romans passage.

Paul was given a unique mission from God, to preach the Gospel revealed by the risen Christ Himself. Paul had no doubts about the Gospel and he also had a special background in his own study of the Old Testament. He knew how wrong he was in the past, about that content. Christ revealed to Paul what the Old Testament (as we call it) really meant.

It was parallel to the road to Emmaus experience, recorded in Luke. His eyes were opened.

Thus Paul knew the answer to the salvation of the world, and he knew it from the Son of God. And yet, wherever he went, this Gospel was persecuted and he was blamed for all the problems that erupted.

Worst of all, many became convinced that the false teachers were really doing what they promised, helping everyone toward salvation and improving the church.

Paul was blamed for those splits, too.

And how could he NOT be blamed for causing riots. He had a record of being arrested, beaten, and escaping a city in a basket lowered from a window. He saw a great crisis, literally a judgment, and preached about it.

But still people slumbered. That is a universal metaphor used to described a lack of interest in actual events. When we sleep our bodies enter a paralysis, and our minds drift away. Reality no longer exists. But we have to wake up and take care of our normal duties.

Most people awaken slowly and they have trouble grasping the reality left behind in sleep. People trip over pets, lose their glasses, and gasp at the image in the mirror. Waking up in a new place can create a surge of anxiety. “Where am I and how did I get here?”

Wakefulness symbolizes seeing things as they are. The time of evil is an era of darkness. As bad as things might be, salvation is nearer to us now than when we first believed.

Salvation means the final consummation for us, when we are moved from this earth to eternal life. We do not know the exact future, and Paul did not either. All those prophets who predict the future place themselves above Christ, who said, the Son does not know, only the Father.

The working of the Antichrist began in the Apostolic Age, but God allowed human history to continue. That we have had life 2000 years after Christ is a testimony to God’s grace alone. It is His letting (2 Thessalonians 2). When He stops allowing us to continue, history will come to an end.

All believers will inherit eternal life because of their sins being forgiven through faith. For many then and even more (in numbers) today – that has meant death through martyrdom.

Those who teach material blessings through the Gospel avoid the cross entirely. They cannot harmonize the two, so they reject the cross in favor of luxuries and ease. Luther argued that the cross is proof of sound doctrine – not a refutation of it. Chytraeus said the same thing. The Gospel always produces opposition, especially in the visible church.

Ministers are made to feel guilty when there is opposition -
  • You said something wrong – or in the wrong way – or too boldly.
  • Your children are loud in church and yet you are a minister. That must be your fault.
  • Why does your wife dress so well (or so frugally)? Both are considered faults by those who oppose the Word.
Luther commented on one excellent minister whose members never let him forget that he was always clearing his throat.

Thus today the biggest fraud is the favorite of the synodical leaders, because they are also frauds. They know their false doctrine and deceptions have earned them luxury vacations at the finest resorts, all kinds of tax-free gifts, and the greatest honors from those who know them least. After imposing their false doctrine on a congregation and splitting it from the divinely called pastor, they point their crooked fingers and cackle, “Look at him. He divided the congregation. We must chase him away as a wolf among sheep.” And they do, rejoicing in their so-called orthodoxy.

12 The night is far spent, the day is at hand: let us therefore cast off the works of darkness, and let us put on the armour of light.

In John’s Gospel and in Paul, darkness represents evil, falsehood, and sin. In contrast, light symbolizes truth, righteousness, and purity. I did a study of this long ago and was struck by this symbolism in two authors. John and Paul truly own this distinction in the New Testament. However, other authors also use the terms to some extent.

Luther made this observation about Creation by the Word in Genesis 1. Light was created by the Word before all the stars. How can light exist before the source of light, the sun and stars?

That is God’s way. He created light. He is truth. Jesus, the creating Word said, “I am the Light of the World.”

What do all the false teachers say? They are light. In the Masonic Lodge religion, the Worshipful Master is called the light. Not Christ, but an elected human being – like a District President or a bishop.

KJV John 8:12 Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the Light of the World: he that followeth Me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Paul here is admonishing his followers to get rid of all the works of darkness, the sins that drag them away from the Gospel, the false doctrine that surrounds them.

False doctrine is the opposite of the cross. It promises the very things that our Old Adam craves. And yet it is never satisfying, so Old Adam wants more and better. Paganism was a sex cult, so that was attractive by itself. The Roman Empire was bi-sexual from the top down, which meant they might conceive children but they really preferred their own gender. See Romans 1 for a portrait of our age and theirs. The first 15 Roman emperors were all bi-sexual, and many were monsters, even in the eyes of their peers. Each ruler had his Reggie Love companion and more besides. Tiberius and Joel Hochmuth – same behavior, only without the Internet.

and let us put on the armour of light.

We are and will remain sinners, always vulnerable to temptation of all kinds. And yet there is a powerful armor against all darkness – the Gospel, which is the armor of light. The truth of forgiveness means that when we fail, when we fall, we still find forgiveness in Christ, which is constantly offered us in the Word.

Luther called the Word the ultimate weapon against Satan. The Word identifies Satan’s work and also defeats it. The Gospel shields us against Satan’s attacks and comforts us with the true, genuine comfort of God’s grace and love.

My wife ran into one of those cloaked nasty emails I often get from “conservative” Lutheran pastors. It made her a bit upset, because we know this person. I said, “No, it is a commendation. The barbs and sneers and fake good wishes are all a way of saying – the Word torments us for promoting UOJ.”

Although most people think of fleshly sin when the term sin is mentioned, our biggest weaknesses come from our emotions. I had a grandmother lose her cherries grandchild during an online class. She felt helpless and worthless and could not focus on anything. She was going to drop out and fail the class. It is a natural feeling to say, “Here is one more cause of pain. I will drop that cause and it will feel better.” I gave her Angel Joy as a PDF, to read and share with her family. In the long run, finishing a class is not the biggest thing, but it helped her focus on faith and Christian grieving. She finished the class.
The Gospel is the only medicine for grieving, and it is powerful. Nothing is universal is scope – except loss and grieving.

The Gospel is the armor of light, because God’s truth heals while Satan’s deceptions destroy.

NIV Romans 13:13 Let us behave decently, as in the daytime, not in orgies and drunkenness, not in sexual immorality and debauchery, not in dissension and jealousy. [NIV so WELS can understand it.]

Because of the cross, the temptation is always there to give up the Gospel in favor of darkness. Or, in the case of people who use the Gospel as a pillow to sleep on – to excuse returning to the old ways through an appeal to God’s grace.

It does not matter what everyone says, what everyone does. Here are clear pathways that lead to destruction. I know a prime example, with great talent and intelligence. He could handle every substance he abused, he said. Now he is an admitted slave to them and pays the price in every possible way.

Notice that not everything is straight out of Hollyword. Strife and jealousy are included, because they are examples of coveting – evil desire and the temptation to create harm and manufacture trouble, due to jealousy.

Everyone has a jealous streak. Even babies. When we referred to babies in the hospital, our innocent little Erin got jealous of them. I had to say, “But YOU are the baby of this hospital.” She wanted to be Number One Baby. Later, she did not like the term and wanted to be The Big Girl. I remember an engineer who mentioned how lovely these petite ladies from India were. His beautiful wife’s eyes were glowing green, and he never noticed at the moment. I was sure he had to pay back the loan on his wife’s patience later.

Jealousy is an emotion until we act upon to lower someone, hoping to make ourselves better by lowering them. (Men and women speak different languages, so the engineer’s compliment was not disparaging his wife in any way. But she felt the sting. Such things keep conversations going.)

14 But put ye on the Lord Jesus Christ, and make not provision for the flesh, to fulfil the lusts thereof.

This is an admonition to use our baptismal grace against all the wiles of Satan.

We have many friends who love sacred music, the great classics of the hymnal especially. I was taking a break from moving, since it was going to be a long, long day (24 hours in all). One recent hymn kept going through my head – “Invited, Lord.”

Invited, Lord, by boundless grace,
I stand a guest before Thy face;
As Host Thou spreadst no common food:
Here is Thy body and Thy blood.

I was thinking about how hard we were searching for something in Bella Vista, which would have trapped us in one sense, far from new opportunities.

No common food kept going through my head, because the Real Presence is overlooked, distorted, and rejected by so many. It is one more example of God’s boundless grace.

Advent One

Quotations for the Epistle,

Romans 13:11-14

The night is far spent, and the day is at hand. "By the word 'night' we are to understand all doctrines apart from the Gospel. For there is no other saving doctrine; all else is night and darkness."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 15f. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14.

"For the Holy Spirit aids us, fortifying our hope and enabling us not to fear nor to flee from the disasters of the world; but to stand firm even unto death, and to overcome all evil; so that evil must flee from us and cease its attacks. Remember, it is hope in the power of the Holy Spirit, not in human weakness, that must do all this through the medium of the Gospel."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 63. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14.

"Hence, you see, the ecclesiastical traditions that flatly forbid the eating of meat are contrary to the Gospel."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 27. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14.

"It is our duty to allow the body all necessary food, whether wine, meat, eggs or anything else; whether the time be Friday, Sunday, in Lent or after the feast of Easter; regardless of all orders, traditions and vows, and of the Pope. No prohibition contrary to God's command can avail, though made by the angels even."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 26. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14.

"The other class is represented by the blind saints who imagine the kingdom of God and his righteousness are dependent upon the particular meat and drink, clothing and couch, of their own choice...Upon this subject Paul says (1 Corinthians 8:8): 'Food will not commend us to God; neither, if we eat not, are we the worse; nor, if we eat, are we the better.'"
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 25f. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14; 1 Corinthians 8:8.

"We are to place our whole confidence in God, and in Him alone, being very careful not to devote any portion of it to the mother of God or any saint and so set up an idol in our hearts." Sermons of
Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p.54. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14.

"Using a convenient term, he calls Christ a 'minister,' as he calls all preachers and apostles ministers. 'What then is Apollos? and what is Paul? Ministers through whom ye believed.'" 1 Corinthians 3:5.
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 57. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14; 1 Corinthians 3:5.

"Paul in Romans 12:7-8 devotes the office of the ministry to two things, doctrine and exhortation. The doctrinal part consists in preaching truths not generally known; in instructing and enlightening the people. Exhortation is inciting and urging to duties already well understood. Necessarily both obligations claim the attention of the minister, and hence Paul takes up both."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 9. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14; Romans 12:7-8.

"But, being deceived by the devil, we forsake the light of day and seek to find truth among philosophers and heathen totally ignorant of such matters. In permitting ourselves to be blinded by human doctrines, we return to the night. Whatsoever is not the Gospel day surely cannot be light. Otherwise Paul, and in fact all Scripture, would not urge that day upon us and pronounce everything else night."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholaus Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VI, p. 17. First Sunday in Advent, Romans 13:11-14.

"Other books may have power to slay us, indeed, but no book except the holy Scriptures has power to comfort us. No other bears the title here given by Paul--book of comfort--one that can support the soul in all tribulations, helping it not to despair but to maintain hope. For thereby the soul apprehends God's Word and, learning His gracious will, cleaves to it, continuing steadfast in life and death."
