Overturning the Reformation - Using and Abusing the Adiaphora - Matters of Indifference

Luther and Melanchthon provided the initial materials promoting and defending the Reformation.

Martin Chemnitz studied under Luther and Melanchthon, combining the previous work of Lutheran Melanchthon, continuing the work of his professors with the help of his colleagues.

X. Church Rites.

From the Book of Concord, Formula of Concord, Epitome

Which are [Commonly] Called Adiaphora or Matters of Indifference.

1 Concerning ceremonies or church rites which are neither commanded nor forbidden in God’s Word, but have been introduced into the Church for the sake of good order and propriety, a dissension has also occurred among the theologians of the Augsburg Confession.

STATUS CONTROVERSIAE: Chief Controversy concerning This Article.

2 The chief question, however, has been, whether, in time of persecution and in case of confession, even if the enemies of the Gospel have not reached an agreement with us in doctrine, some abrogated ceremonies, which in themselves are matters of indifference and are neither commanded nor forbidden by God, may nevertheless, upon the pressure and demand of the adversaries, be reestablished without violence to conscience, and we may thus [rightly] have conformity with them in such ceremonies and adiaphora. To this the one side has said Yea, the other, Nay.

AFFIRMATIVE THESES: The Correct and True Doctrine and Confession concerning This Article.

3 1. For settling also this controversy we unanimously believe, teach, and confess that the ceremonies or church rites which are neither commanded nor forbidden in God’s Word, but have been instituted alone for the sake of propriety and good order, are in and of themselves no divine worship, nor even a part of it. Matt. 15:9:In vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men.

4 2. We believe, teach, and confess that the congregation of God of every place and every time has the power, according to its circumstances, to change such ceremonies in such manner as may be most useful and edifying to the congregation of God.

5 3. Nevertheless, that herein all frivolity and offense should be avoided, and special care should be taken to exercise forbearance towards the weak in faith. 1 Cor. 8:9; Rom. 14:13.

6 4. We believe, teach, and confess that in time of persecution, when a plain [and steadfast] confession is required of us, we should not yield to the enemies in regard to such adiaphora, as the apostle has written Gal. 5:1: Stand fast, therefore, in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not entangled again in the yoke of bondage. Also 2 Cor. 6:14: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers, etc. For what concord hath light with darkness? Also Gal. 2:5: To whom we gave place, no, not for an hour, that the truth of the Gospel might remain with you. For in such a case it is no longer a question concerning adiaphora, but concerning the truth of the Gospel, concerning [preserving] Christian liberty, and concerning sanctioning open idolatry, as also concerning the prevention of offense to the weak in the faith [how care should be taken lest idolatry be openly sanctioned and the weak in faith be offended]; in which we have nothing to concede, but should plainly confess and suffer on that account what God sends, and what He allows the enemies of His Word to inflict upon us.

7 5. We believe, teach, and confess also that no Church should condemn another because one has less or more external ceremonies not commanded by God than the other, if otherwise there is agreement among them in doctrine and all its articles, as also in the right use of the holy Sacraments, according to the well-known saying: Dissonantia ieiunii non dissolvit consonantiam fidei, Disagreement in fasting does not destroy agreement in faith.

NEGATIVE THESES: False Doctrine concerning This Article.

8 Accordingly, we reject and condemn as wrong and contrary to God’s Word when it is taught:

9 1. That human ordinances and institutions in the church should be regarded as in themselves a divine worship or part of it.

10 2. When such ceremonies, ordinances, and institutions are violently forced upon the congregation of God as necessary, contrary to its Christian liberty which it has in external things.

11 3. Also, that in time of persecution and public confession [when a clear confession is required] we may yield to the enemies of the Gospel in such adiaphora and ceremonies, or may come to an agreement with them (which causes injury to the truth).

12 4. Also, when these external ceremonies and adiaphora are abrogated in such a manner as though it were not free to the congregation of God to employ one or more [this or that] in Christian liberty, according to its circumstances, as may be most useful at any time to the Church [for edification]. GJ -

WELS-LCMS-ELCA-ELS-CLC (sic) were so weak in Biblical doctrine and the Book of Concord that they worked together to destroy their own sects, boasting about their superiority while banning the King James Version. Evidence? above and below.

American Lutherans - All Synods - Began Their Self-Destruction 100 Years Ago

The Bible is a matter of indifference, according to the really cool Lutherans. And why not? Protestants invited the Roman Catholic leaders into the American Bible Society at the very beginning. The same happened in Europe with the much worse United Bible Societies.

Were not the ecumenical agencies building and improving, from the Great Depression onward?

They played Magician, concentrating on one hand (a better, clearer Bible!) so nobody cared about the other hand (verses and words eliminated by the Improvers). They  watered down faith in Jesus Christ and His Divinity, using Greek texts that very few scholars and leaders could see or discuss or question. The magicians who know the tricks can easily bamboozle those who do not see the obvious.

Protestants felt warm and cozy about their friendships with Roman Catholic leaders. The genius of Roman Catholicism is its foundation in the greedy, and horribly corrupt visible institution - Holy Mother Church.

Lutherans began discovering that Luther was much more Roman than the Reformation allowed. Here are some of the baby steps that Lutherans and many Protestants (especially Episcopalian) have already taken to get in bed with Whore of Babylon (Revelation 17):

The Dirty Dozen

  1. Forcing the three-year lectionary, acting as if the historic lectionary was deficient.
  2. Honoring saints and famous people instead of Jesus first
  3. Promoting gay liturgical garments and paraments - when not wearing old jeans and yardwork shirts
  4. Insisting on the non-canonical Apocrypha and making those boring and uninspired books higher in value than the Scriptures.
  5. Encouraging famous pastors to join Rome and pull more high profile victims.
  6. Making it essential to burn incense.
  7. Sprinkling the congregation because priesthood does.
  8. Favoring the priest or father title because it is Roman and more glorious.
  9. Wearing albs, which became a license to purchase CM Almy costumes, extravagantly expensive, demanding more and more frills - mitres for the pseudo-bishops, copes to add another expensive garment, giant wooden staff crosses (crossiers) to impress the audience. Add communion sets on sale for only $8,000.
  10. Gathering semi-secretive groups, like the Society of the Holy Trinity (STS in Latin, appropriate for most of them).
  11. Relying on leaders to tell them what to do and knowing that the hierarchy will never allow a Biblical debate on anything.
  12. Teaching against Justification by Faith and denying that grace comes to us only by faith in Jesus Christ the Savior, the Son of God, Romans 5:1-2.

From a Reader - Why Are Lutheran Pastors using the Angel Pose? - AKA Orans

Pope Saint Paul VI - This papal tiara is nicknamed "the artillery shell," his sanctified and sanctifying hands are in the orans (silent praying) pose.

A reader wondered about the "angel pose" among the ELDONUTs. Decades ago, a Lutheran layman came back from an Episcopal wedding, complaining that the groomsmen had to walk in and stand using the angel pose. He hated how prissy it looked.

How did this get into Lutherdom? The Ft. Wayne and St. Louis seminary graduates are brainwashed in Catholicism and Eastern Orthodoxy. They despise Luther's Biblical doctrine and fuss over how to barbeque the incense. Most of all, they love to parade in their expensive costumes. Their services, as Chemnitz wrote in Examination of the Council of Trent, is either a tragedy or a comedy.

Book of Concord, Formula of Concord, Article 10, Adiaphora -

Likewise, the article concerning Christian liberty also is here at stake, which the Holy Ghost through the mouth of the holy apostle so earnestly charged His Church to preserve, as we have just heard. For as soon as this is weakened and the ordinances of men [human traditions] are forced upon the Church with coercion, as though it were wrong and a sin to omit them, the way is already prepared for idolatry, and by this means ordinances of men [human traditions] are afterwards multiplied and regarded as a divine worship, not only equal to the ordinances of God, but are even placed above them.

Who stole my stole? Pope Francis, SJ, was photographed wearing Pope Paul VI's stole.

 ELDONUTs - note the bishop's mitre (fish-hat).
No tiara? Not yet.

16 Moreover, by such [untimely] yielding and conformity in external things, where there has not been previously Christian union in doctrine, idolaters are confirmed in their idolatry; on the other hand, the true believers are grieved, offended, and weakened in their faith [their faith is grievously shaken, and made to totter as though by a battering-ram]; both of which every Christian for the sake of his soul’s welfare and salvation is bound to avoid, as it is written: Woe unto the world because of offenses! Also: Whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in Me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea [Matt. 18:6, 7 .

Are You Still Indifferent about Matters of Indifference? This Is a Time of Doctrinal Crisis.

Let's show our respect for the Papacy and its equal partner in Eastern Orthodoxy.

Some danger signals have been flashing for decades - on adiaphora, matters of indifference.

Biblical knowledge is at its lowest ebb, yet the conservative sects (WELS-ELS-LCMS-ELDONA) push hard to promote the Apocrypha, those books which have never been canonical. His Holiness in Rome said a Mass of thanksgiving for this blessed change.

Holy Father in Rome created a three-year lectionary. ELCA followed, then the "conservatives." The Antichrist says, "Thank you for supporting our work."

Rome's liturgical calendar had to be changed, along with the paraments, because that would also be unifying. Most of the Protestants and all of the Lutheran sects agreed, adiaphora - but why follow Roman Catholic practices when they reject Justification by Faith? I get it - the Lutherans also reject the Chief Article of the Christian Religion, so that makes it A OK.

Father McSorley, a priest who visited Waterloo Lutheran Seminary said, Luther was correct.

Christian News had no problem with selling Father O'Hare's The Truth about Luther, a vile and dishonest book by a Roman Catholic. Do Roman Catholic publishing houses do the same for Luther? CN's defense was, "We sell to both sides of the issue."

In fact, there is only one side of the ecumenical issue - Calvinistic Objective Justification. I can name many people who thought my writing was great, until I dared to question Justification without Faith, their Helen of Troy. They have invoked their primary sacrament - shunning - which gives me time to write back to believers instead of listening to apostates whining and gnawing.

When the minister has to have incense, he is drifting toward Romanism. But it is only an adiaphoron, right?

R U Indifferent about Adiaphora?

One layman asked me to write about the issue of adiaphora - matters of indifference in Latin. The term is abused in today's Lutherdom, because education is so poor and continued study is lacking, except for phony degrees from Fuller Seminary. The master's degree after a divinity degree was once called - Latin word order - STM - a master of sacred (Christian) theology. Fuller should have retained the practical Doctor of Sacred Theology - STD. Then no one would attach the initials to the name. That is far more sensible than Doctor of Ministry, though D.Min. sounds pleasingly like Demon. Fuller has produced many demons.

I would pay money to hear the Church Growth experts in WELS, LCMS, and ELCA say, "All of us picked up STDs at Fuller Seminary, so pay attention to us."

Enough ruminations! Article VII of the Augsburg Confession states that unity comes from general agreement, not from every possible picky thing anyone can imagine. That is used with Article X of the Formula of Concord to label everything as adiaphora, Latin plural for "matters of indifference." WELS specializes in everything being matters of indifference, including women consecrating Holy Communion, bedding down with ELCA, and promoting Calvinism.

Confidentially, WELS knows as little about the Book of Concord as the Missouri Synod. That is shown by their shared ignorance and mutual opposition to an important part of Article X in the Formula of Concord.

X. 5. Namely, when under the title and pretext of external adiaphora such things are proposed as are in principle contrary to God’s Word (although painted another color), these are not to be regarded as adiaphora, in which one is free to act as he will, but must be avoided as things prohibited by God. In like manner, too, such ceremonies should not be reckoned among the genuine free adiaphora, or matters of indifference, as make a show or feign the appearance, as though our religion and that of the Papists were not far apart, thus to avoid persecution, or as though the latter were not at least highly offensive to us; or when such ceremonies are designed for the purpose, and required and received in this sense, as though by and through them both contrary religions were reconciled and became one body; or when a reentering into the Papacy and a departure from the pure doctrine of the Gospel and true religion should occur or gradually follow therefrom [when there is danger lest we seem to have reentered the Papacy, and to have departed, or to be on the point of departing gradually, from the pure doctrine of the Gospel].

How about this, synodicals, ye who worship the organization and bow down before the fancy-robed and fish-hatted dictator?

The synods - with ELCA - endorsed and promoted the Roman Catholic three-year lectionary.

The synods - with ELCA - love every Biblical paraphrase except the Apostolic Text, aka the Majority or Traditional Text of the KJV, and promote the snip and clip monstrosities of apostate liars Tischendorf, Westcott, Hort, and Aland.

The synods - with ELCA - endorsed and promoted Rome's San Francisco color scheme for the paraments, adding pink, sky-blue, and who knows what.

The district and synod presidents -with ELCA - have become more Roman in their liturgical finery than ever before.

WELS - suffering from withdrawal, giving up their black Geneva gowns - brazenly adopted an expensive Calvinist hymnal of their own and demanded big bucks from the parishes to pay for it.

The synods - with ELCA - despise Biblical Lutheran doctrine, if they even deal with it, and pile up experts of their own from Rome, Calvinism, and the popcorn praise band advocates of the Babtists.

Rome and the Calvinists have made such incursions into Lutheran doctrine and worship that all these "adiaphora" should be removed. No one should be indifferent about the adiaphora coming in the back door, no pun intended, but that is what the thieves like best (John 10).

Lutheran Layman Code-Named 29A - Reminds Us about Adiaphora

From Yet Another Layman - 29A:
Reading Ichabod.  I remember the big to do back in the 1980s about adiaphora. Even CFW made a quote about adiaphora in a state of confession. They forgot that about their hero.

Reminds me of that Theodore Schmauk   I read on ichabod. I summarize. It will not stop until they cross the borders of Scripture itself. Maybe they already have with NIV2011.

About the Crunchy Lutheran Mommy Conversion to Eastern Orthodoxy

From Another Reader - with permission:
I read your latest post about the LCMS Pastor who became Eastern Orthodox. I am not sure it is solely because of UOJ. I went to his blog and read a couple of his posts. He is arguing that liturgy and practice do matter. This is going to continue happening. I say the same thing to my husband all the time. The Lutheran Church I grew up in was very strict in matters of liturgy and practice. Now I am being told that it is adiaphora. We can all worship how we are moved. For your church that may be with Keith Getty music, but it doesn’t matter. We are all one. To which I ask, “Are you really sure about that?”  What am I going to be told is adiaphora next? If we can just change practice depending how I feel, why not just change the whole thing?  I  believe the truth of Sola Scriptura, but worship and practice do matter. They are a mirror of our doctrine. They are a reflection of who we are. If we are not teaching that, we are failing. I am sure the Pastor who left has more reasons. I am sure the struggle for him was real. I find that the Lutheran Church does not want to address this. They are fine with the fact that they are fractured. How many more people are struggling inside?

GJ - The synods are happy to grab the tuition money, so they keep their eyes half-shut when a paying customer is in the seminary. Having someone leave afterwards is not so bad, because it opens up a slot. If anyone thinks the synod leaders care about the individual congregations...think again. I asked a prominent Concordia St. Louis professor about the "shortage" situation. He said, "I don't know and I don't care."

The adiaphora excuse only shows the apostates have not opened the Book of Concord for any reason. Or they simply despise the Confessions.

10] We believe, teach, and confess also that at the time of confession [when a confession of the heavenly truth is required], when the enemies of God's Word desire to suppress the pure doctrine of the holy Gospel, the entire congregation of God, yea, every Christian, but especially the ministers of the Word, as the leaders of the congregation of God [as those whom God has appointed to rule His Church], are bound by God's Word to confess freely and openly the [godly] doctrine, and what belongs to the whole of [pure] religion, not only in words, but also in works and with deeds; and that then, in this case, even in such [things truly and of themselves] adiaphora, they must not yield to the adversaries, or permit these [adiaphora] to be forced upon them by their enemies, whether by violence or cunning, to the detriment of the true worship of God and the introduction and sanction of idolatry. 11] For it is written, Gal. 5:1: Stand fast, therefore, in the liberty wherewith Christ hath made us free, and be not again entangled in the yoke of bondage. Also Gal. 2:4f : And that because of false brethren unawares brought in, who came in privily to spy out our liberty which we have in Christ Jesus, that they might bring us into bondage; to whom we gave place by subjection, no, not for an hour, that the truth of the Gospel might continue with you. 12] [Now it is manifest that in that place Paul speaks concerning circumcision, which at that time had become an adiaphoron (1 Cor. 7:18f.), and which at other occasions was observed by Paul (however, with Christian and spiritual freedom, Acts 16:3). But when the false apostles urged circumcision for establishing their false doctrine, (that the works of the Law were necessary for righteousness and salvation,) and misused it for confirming their error in the minds of men, Paul says that he would not yield even for an hour, in order that the truth of the Gospel might continue unimpaired.]

I do not know where this reader worships, but the adiaphora argument was used constantly to excuse WELS chasing after the Evangelicals and Pentecostals. Visit any Assemblies of God congregation and you will find all the key ingredients of a Mark and Avoid Jeske church:
  1. Praise band.
  2. Stage - not a chancel. A table maybe, no real altar.
  3. No pulpit.
  4. Coaching sessions, no sermon.
  5. Hide the sacraments.
  6. Screens here, there, everywhere.
  7. Selling coffee - supposedly gourmet. Ha.
  8. Parking valet. No, I am not kidding.
  9. Digital giving, such as having an ATM in the narthex.
  10. Clergy attire confused with going to a picnic.
Notice that the favorite motto of the Jeske circle - A Changeless Christ in a Changing World - is also employed by the apostate American Lutheran Publicity Bureau. It is the name of their history book about how they bravely abandoned Lutheran doctrine. So, is that a liberal thing? Yes, the motto is a liberal thing.

The other argument used by WELS is - "Perhaps we should not exercise our liberty, because that might harm those of you with a weak faith." A smirk would follow. There is no use citing the red section of Article X above, because that has as much meaning to them as Egyptian Book of the Dead in its original language.

Besides all that, Eastern Orthodoxy is long on ceremony, short on doctrinal clarity. The poor abused students of Concordia, Ft. Wayne graduate with two great loves - Eastern Orthodoxy and UOJ. UOJ paves the path to Eastern Orthodoxy, Roman Catholicism, Church Growthism, and ultimately atheism. I know two WELS pastors who espoused Church Growth and UOJ only to become atheists - loud and proud - as their confused thoughts led them away from the Word.

The WELS-LCMS-ELS leaders, yea even the CLC (sic) have facilitated this loss of doctrine for the last 40 years plus.

The only WELS excommunication of a pastor for doctrinal reasons was DP Buchholz, SP Schroeder, and their DP allies extending the Left Foot of Fellowship to someone who defended Justification by Faith, the Chief Article of Christianity. How dare he?

 And your little dog too!

WELS Hates and Scorns the Book of Concord

narrow-minded has left a new comment on your post "Mark Schroeder and Praise Band Hootenannies.ALPB O...":

Augsburg Confession, Article XV: Of Ecclesiastical Usages.

1] Of Usages in the Church they teach that those ought to be observed which may be observed without sin, and which are profitable unto tranquility and good order in the Church, as particular holy days, festivals, and the like.

2] Nevertheless, concerning such things men are admonished that consciences are not to be burdened, as though such observance was necessary to salvation.

3] They are admonished also that human traditions instituted to propitiate God, to merit grace, and to make satisfaction for sins, are opposed to the Gospel and the doctrine of faith. Wherefore vows and traditions concerning meats and 4] days, etc., instituted to merit grace and to make satisfaction for sins, are useless and contrary to the Gospel.

I don't believe Article XV implies that adiaphora gives license to discard the Liturgy and have the church service resemble an AC/DC concert.

***

GJ - Likewise, the Formula of Concord is even clearer on the subject, since so many conflicts arose after the actual signing of the Augsburg Confession. They even gave away Augsburg Confessions at the WELS convention!

The Formula of Concord proves to everyone that WELS scorns the Lutheran Confessions, because Wisconsin turns the article upside-down. We must hold fast to the matters of indifference when there is a confessional crisis. Can anyone deny that today, when Lutherans copy their sermons from Groeschel, Stanley, Driscoll, and Sweet - anyone but Luther?

The big movie screen and praise band of Pentecostalism are now required equipment for SynCon chancels - or rather - stages.

The Means of Grace are hidden away, and the pulpit is a lectern or Notebook holder for the next, exciting coaching talk.

Book of Concord, Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, Adiaphora, Article X.

Brett Meyer has left a new comment on your post "WELS Hates and Scorns the Book of Concord":

Sounded like someone just asked for a (W)ELS funded and approved sermon series about Sex - Satan's Sex Ed.

Baby Blue Eyes Asks a Question about Adiaphora.
Article X. Formula of Concord. Solid Declaration.

The Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord

X. Church Rites, Commonly Called Adiaphora.

The Solid Declaration of the Formula of Concord

X. Church Rites, Commonly Called Adiaphora.

1] Concerning ceremonies and church rites which are neither commanded nor forbidden in God's Word, but are introduced into the Church with a good intention, for the sake of good order and propriety, or otherwise to maintain Christian discipline, a dissension has likewise arisen among some theologians of the Augsburg Confession: 2] the one side holding that also in time of persecution and in case of confession [when confession of faith is to be made], even though the enemies of the Gospel do not come to an agreement with us in doctrine, yet some ceremonies, abrogated [long since], which in themselves are adiaphora, and neither commanded nor forbidden by God, may, without violence to conscience, be reestablished in compliance with the pressure and demand of the adversaries, and thus in such [things which are of themselves] adiaphora, or matters of indifference, we may indeed come to an agreement [have conformity] with them. 3] But the other side contended that in time of persecution, in case of confession, especially when it is the design of the adversaries, either through force and compulsion, or in an insidious manner, to suppress the pure doctrine, and gradually to introduce again into our churches their false doctrine, this, also in adiaphora, can in no way be done, as has been said, without violence to conscience and prejudice to the divine truth.

4] To explain this controversy, and by God's grace finally to settle it, we present to the Christian reader this simple statement regarding the matter [in conformity with the Word of God]:

5] Namely, when under the title and pretext of external adiaphora such things are proposed as are in principle contrary to God's Word (although painted another color), these are not to be regarded as adiaphora, in which one is free to act as he will, but must be avoided as things prohibited by God.

6] For in this case what Paul writes, 2 Cor. 6:14-17, shall and must obtain: Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what communion hath light with darkness?Wherefore come out from among them and be ye separate, saith the Lord.

7] Likewise, when there are useless, foolish displays, that are profitable neither for good order nor Christian discipline, nor evangelical propriety in the Church, these also are not genuine adiaphora, or matters of indifference.

8] But as regards genuine adiaphora, or matters of indifference (as explained before), we believe, teach, and confess that such ceremonies, in and of themselves, are no worship of God, nor any part of it, but must be properly distinguished from such as are, as it is written: In vain they do worship Me, teaching for doctrines the commandments of men, Matt. 15:9.

9] Therefore we believe, teach, and confess that the congregation of God of every place and every time has, according to its circumstances, the good right, power, and authority [in matters truly adiaphora] to change, to diminish, and to increase them, without thoughtlessness and offense, in an orderly and becoming way, as at any time it may be regarded most profitable, most beneficial, and best for [preserving] good order, [maintaining] Christian discipline [and for eujtaxiva worthy of the profession of the Gospel], and the edification of the Church. Moreover, how we can yield and give way with a good conscience to the weak in faith in such external adiaphora, Paul teaches Rom. 14, and proves it by his example, Acts 16:3; 21:26; 1 Cor. 9:19.

13] Thus Paul yields and gives way to the weak as to food and [the observance of] times or days, Rom. 14:6. But to the false apostles, who wished to impose these upon the conscience as necessary things, he will yield not even in such things as in themselves are adiaphora, Col. 2:16: Let no man therefore judge you in meat, or in drink, or in respect of an holy day. And when Peter and Barnabas yielded somewhat [more than they ought] in such an emergency, Paul openly reproves them as those who in this matter were not walking aright, according to the truth of the Gospel, Gal. 2:11ff

14] For here it is no longer a question concerning external matters of indifference, which in their nature and essence are and remain of themselves free, and accordingly can admit of no command or prohibition that they be employed or omitted; but it is a question, in the first place, concerning the eminent article of our Christian faith, as the apostle testifies, that the truth of the Gospel might continue, which is obscured and perverted by such compulsion or command, because such adiaphora are then either publicly required for the sanction of false doctrine, superstition, and idolatry, and for the suppression of pure doctrine and Christian liberty, or at least are abused for this purpose by the adversaries, and are thus viewed [and are believed to be restored for this abuse and wicked end].

15] Likewise, the article concerning Christian liberty also is here at stake, which the Holy Ghost through the mouth of the holy apostle so earnestly charged His Church to preserve, as we have just heard.

16] Moreover, by such [untimely] yielding and conformity in external things, where there has not been previously Christian union in doctrine, idolaters are confirmed in their idolatry; on the other hand, the true believers are grieved, offended, and weakened in their faith [their faith is grievously shaken, and made to totter as though by a battering-ram]; both of which every Christian for the sake of his soul's welfare and salvation is bound to avoid, as it is written: Woe unto the world because of offenses! Also: Whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in Me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea [Matt. 18:6, 7].

17] But it is to be especially remembered what Christ says: Whosoever therefore shalt confess Me before men, him will I confess also before My Father which is in heaven, Matt. 10:32.

18] However, that this has always and everywhere been the faith and confession, concerning such indifferent matters, of the chief teachers of the Augsburg Confession, into whose footsteps we have entered, and in whose Confession we intend by God's grace to persevere, is shown [most clearly] by the following testimonies drawn from the Smalcald Articles, which were composed and subscribed in the year 1537:

From the Smalcald Articles, in the Year 1537, etc.

19] The Smalcald Articles (Of the Church) say concerning this as follows: We do not concede to them (the papal bishops) that they are the Church, and indeed they are not; nor will we listen to those things which, under the name of Church, they enjoin and forbid. For, thank God, [today] a child seven years old knows what the Church is, namely, the saints, believers, and lambs, who hear the voice of their Shepherd. And shortly before (Of Ordination and Vocation): If the bishops would be true bishops, and would devote themselves to the Church and the Gospel, it might be granted to them, for the sake of love and unity, but not from necessity, to ordain and confirm us and our preachers; omitting, however, all comedies and spectacular doings of an unchristian nature and display. But, because they neither are, nor wish to be, true bishops, but worldly lords and princes, who will neither preach, nor teach, nor baptize, nor administer the Lord's Supper, nor perform any work or office of the Church, and, moreover, persecute and condemn those who, having been called to do so, discharge these functions, the Church ought not on their account to remain without ministers.

20] And in the article Of the Papacy, the Smalcald Articles say (475:14): Therefore, just as little as we can worship the devil himself as Lord and God, we can endure his apostle, the Pope, or Antichrist, in his rule as head or lord. For to lie and to kill and to destroy body and soul eternally, that is wherein his papal government really consists.

21] And in the treatise Concerning the Power and Primacy of the Pope, which is appended to the Smalcald Articles, and was also subscribed by the theologians then present with their own hands, are these words: No one is to burden the Church with his own traditions, but here the rule is to be that nobody's power or authority is to avail more than the Word of God.

22] And shortly afterwards (517:41): This being the case, all Christians ought most diligently to beware of becoming partakers of the godless doctrine, blasphemies, and unjust cruelties of the Pope; but ought to desert and execrate the Pope with his members, or adherents, as the kingdom of Antichrist, just as Christ has commanded (Matt. 7:15): "Beware of false prophets." And Paul commands us to avoid false teachers and execrate them as an abomination. And in 2 Cor. 6:14 he says: "Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what communion hath light with darkness?"

23] It is a grave matter wanting to separate one's self from so many lands and nations, and to profess a separate doctrine; but here stands God's command, that every one should beware and not agree with those who maintain false doctrine, or who think of supporting it by means of cruelty.

24] So Dr. Luther, too, has amply instructed the Church of God in a special treatise concerning what should be thought of ceremonies in general, and especially of adiaphora, Vol. 3, Jena, p. 523; as was also done in 1530, and can be seen in Tom. 3, Jena, German.

25] From this explanation every one can understand what every Christian congregation and every Christian man, especially in time of confession [when a confession of faith should be made], and, most of all, preachers, are to do or to leave undone, without injury to conscience, with respect to adiaphora, in order that God may not be angered [provoked to just indignation], love may not be injured, the enemies of God's Word be not strengthened, nor the weak in faith offended.

26] 1. Therefore we reject and condemn as wrong when the ordinances of men in themselves are regarded as a service or part of the service of God.

27] 2. We reject and condemn also as wrong when these ordinances are by coercion forced upon the congregation of God as necessary.

28] 3. We reject and condemn also as wrong the opinion of those who hold (what tends to the detriment of the truth) that at a time of persecution we may comply with the enemies of the holy Gospel in [restoring] such adiaphora, or come to an agreement with them.

29] 4. We likewise regard it as a sin that deserves to be rebuked when in time of persecution anything is done either in indifferent matters or in doctrine, and in what otherwise pertains to religion, for the sake of the enemies of the Gospel, in word and act, contrary and opposed to the Christian confession.

30] 5. We reject and condemn also [the madness] when these adiaphora are abrogated in such a manner as though it were not free to the congregation [church] of God at any time and place to employ one or more in Christian liberty, according to its circumstances, as may be most useful to the Church.

31] Thus [According to this doctrine] the churches will not condemn one another because of dissimilarity of ceremonies when, in Christian liberty, one has less or more of them, provided they are otherwise agreed with one another in the doctrine and all its articles, also in the right use of the holy Sacraments, according to the well-known saying: Dissonantia ieiunii non dissolvit consonantiam fidei; "Disagreement in fasting does not destroy agreement in the faith."

The Adiaphora Argument Used Is Invalid - Another Twisting of the Book of Concord

This seems to be good reason NOT to copy Groeschel
and the Catholic Encyclopedia,
but it also explains why Glende and No Call Paul McCain are FB friends.

Book of Concord, Formula of Concord, Solid Declaration, X, Adiaphora

5] Namely, when under the title and pretext of external adiaphora such things are proposed as are in principle contrary to God's Word (although painted another color), these are not to be regarded as adiaphora, in which one is free to act as he will, but must be avoided as things prohibited by God.

GJ - The article on Adiaphora (matters of indifference) is used to advance false doctrine in the SynCon sects. Kudu Don Patterson's wealthy layman said, "Almost everything in worship is adiaphora."

Missouri has plenty of Fuller Seminary emergents, but also a boatload of papal-wannabees.

In all these cases, the article on adiaphora is a staggering blow against their craft and assaults, their deceit and trickery. This is a time of confession, because the Church of Rome is using all its power, wealth, and pageantry to weasel Protestants into the fold. Note the constant promotion of Roman terms among the Lutherans today, the persistent references to the great and wise papalists (like the pope), the obsession with Roman customs, liturgical colors, and lectionary readings (three-year, another gift from Rome).

Missouri, WELS, the Little Sect, and the toxic CLC (sic) have all done things to express unity with Rome.WELS-ELS had a bishop march in procession at a religious service at Bethany (aka The Little Schoolhouse on the Prairie) and an archbishop pedophile teach at Wisconsin Lutheran College. Weakland's priests also taught in that series of lectures. How many were in his harem, no one will ever tell. They have all joined with ELCA (!) to use the Roman three-year lectionary and the gay Roman  liturgical colors.

Need I mention the aping of everything from Fuller Seminary? Fuller doctrine and methods are the best way to get promoted in WELS, Missouri, the ELS, and the toxic CLC (sic). Those yearning to be president of The Sausage Factory better sign up for some Fuller courses, because that is the ticket. Ask Valleskey and Wendland.

Where has ELS Jay Webber, the Torquemada of Ternopil, been during this onslaught of Romanism and Fullerism? He battles constantly against justification by faith, but seems indifferent to the last days of an insane, old world. Has the ELS Bored of Doctrine even noticed the dominance of Fuller thinking in ELS/WELS? the Weakland and Martin Marty lectures? Mark and Avoid Jeske?

The innocent should consider how these noble Pharisees wrinkle their noses in disgust, if anything amiss is mentioned to them. WELS - You studied at Ft. Wayne? How tragic.

  • ELS - You were WELS? I hope you recover.
  • Missouri St. Louis - You only went to Ft. Wayne?
  • Missouri Ft. Wayne - You are a St. Louis snob?
  • CLC (sic) - You were not there when we began. Apostate!

This church building is held together by strands of giant steel dental floss,
but Missouri spends its money on imperial salaries for seminary profs and CPH plagiarists.

In line with your post on Adiaphora I’m sending you part of the exchange with Holy Trinity that highlights their leaving adiaphora behind in favor of a new tactic.  (W)ELS has moved far beyond issues of adiaphora and on to Rome’s version of Principles and Application of Principles.  May be too long for posting but your call.

Pastor, during the third reading today you had a responsive reading of Matthew 6:19-21,25- 34. Can you please explain why you had the women reading two parts of the Scripture? Doesn't biblical doctrine teach that women should be silent in the church, 1 Corinthians 14:34,35. This is clearly prohibited by our Orthodox Lutheran doctrine and should not have been done.

1 Corinthians 14:34-35, “Let your women keep silence in the churches: for it is not permitted unto them to speak; but they are commanded to be under obedience as also saith the law. And if they will learn any thing, let them ask their husbands at home: for it is a shame for women to speak in the church.”

Hi back Brett,
I thought I’d get back to you on your question. Our company from Wisconsin kept us pretty busy the last couple days! Thanks for the question. I’m a bit surprised that you asked this one because antiphonal formats have been used for quite a while in our circles, and have been deemed an acceptable practice that does not violate the man/woman roles God has established. I know that Holy Trinity has used antiphonal formats in the past before I arrived. Also, we sang an antiphonal hymn on Easter Sunday.

As far as the verses from 1 Cor. 14, where it states that women should “remain silent in the churches,” I’m going to assume that you already know that this does not prohibit women from uttering noises in church. Otherwise, women couldn’t pray, confess their faith, sing about the Law and the Gospel, or do any other activities that involved their voice. So then, what does it mean that they are to “remain silent?”

The previous verses give the context for this. Paul writes that there has been disorderly prophesying in the church at Corinth. People intending to teach the group were speaking all at once, causing confusion. Paul therefore gives this command in 1 Cor. 14, which is similar to 1 Timothy 2: “I do not permit a woman to teach or to have authority over a man; she must be silent.” Therefore, it would be a violation for a woman to do things such as hold pastoral office over a congregation, to lead Adult Bible Study over men, or to exercise voting rights. It would not be a valid application of this teaching principle to apply it to every use of women’s voices in worship or to antiphonal formats of worship. If we were going to do that, we would have to eliminate women soloists, female choirs, prominent women’s melodies in mixed choirs, women and men singing the psalms antiphonally, etc. (Our teaching training college, Martin Luther College in New Ulm, MN, has a very fine “Treble Choir” that sings God’s law and gospel to God’s people) In fact, the music pieces and hymns would be even more suspect than reading Scripture, since they contain interpretation of Scripture. We’d even have to condemn women singing in the presence of men, because the men might hear them. These activities, however, are viewed in our circles as acceptable practices that do not usurp teaching authority and thereby violate the Scriptural principle.

Hope you’re having a good week! May God keep our families under his protecting hand,
Pastor S.

Pastor, thank you for your response. You are correct, the same thing has happened at HTLC before. Only once while we were visiting. Pastor Buchholz was asking doctrinal questions of men and women during the sermon and in turn they would stand and give an answer to the entire congregation. My family and I immediately left the service just as we did this past Sunday.

The fact that Synod has accepted this practice and states that it doesn't violate scripture means nothing to me if they can't back it up with scripture. And they haven't provided any scriptural support for it other than to erode existing passages (refer to the WELS question and answer below from the Synod website). I also think this is indicative of the condition of our ELS and WELS Synods.

When women recite the creeds, sing hymns, pray the Lord's prayer they are doing so with the entire congregation and are speaking to and being served by God individually. They are not instructing the entire congregation during those activities. When scripture passages are being read to the congregation then that is an act of teaching the congregation God's words, God's doctrines. They are speaking with God's authority, Holy Scripture, to the church. This is clearly prohibited in 1 Cor. 14:34,35 and 1 Tim. 2:11,12.

It is quite possible that this issue, and others, derive from our first contention which is what is happening during the service. You've contended that primarily we are serving God during the Worship Service and I contend that primarily if not solely God is serving us during the Divine Service. Now if we are primarily serving God, then how we worship and what we worship with becomes adiaphora and subject to personal opinion and tastes. The hymns we sing no longer contain scripture but focus on praise words and songs which magnify how we feel and what we do. This trend toward focusing on us can be seen the change of names from the Divine Service to the Worship service as Divine refers to God and Worship refers to us and what we do. But if God is serving us then we no longer have such wide choices and the liturgy is no longer adiaphora because God has chosen to serve us through only two means, Word and Sacrament. Thus the entire service revolves around God's Word and his Sacraments serving us. Convicting us of our sins and creating contrition in our hearts through the Law, strengthening our faith in Christ's perfect work and granting us the forgiveness of sins through the Lord's Supper and declaring us righteous before God the Father by grace through faith in the Gospel.

Also, doctrine needs to be decided solely on scripture and not on practices or traditions that would have to change because of the decision. For the Catholic Church dictates doctrine based on tradition and they remain damned to this day. There is nothing good in the Church Growth movement. Practice affects doctrine.
In Christ,
Brett

Q: I was reading on a past WELS q&a that it may be possible for women to be lectors during a worship service (especially if the tone and inflection of her voice is proper). I have several questions regarding this viewpoint. 1. This has not been the viewpoint of some WELS theologians as is clear from articles written in WLQ from the 60's and 70's. Has the WELS changed its interpretation of the 1 Corinthians passages dealing with women remaining silent? 2. Does the WELS now teach that it may be acceptable in some instances for a woman to read a Pastor's pre-prepared sermon in front of the congregation since she technically would not be teaching of having authority? 3. Are we witnessing the slippery slope or frog boiling phenomena in the WELS with regard to its stance on women's roles? I ask these questions only because I care deeply for the WELS and the solid doctrinal stance it has held by the grace of God!

A: An article in the 1981 Wisconsin Lutheran Quarterly (an exegesis of 1 Co 14:33b ff.) points out that the matter of women being silent in the church is not the principle but an application of the principle to the unique type of worship service that existed in Corinth. The principle is that a woman is not to assume authority over a man. This principle is not being denied by saying that a woman could serve as a lector. The reading of a Scripture passage with men present is not in and of itself assuming authority over the men. However, reading from the front of the church with a posture and tone of voice that would signal a woman's attitude of lording it over others would be a violation of this principle.

So though it may be technically possible for a woman to read the Scriptures in a worship service without violating her God-given role, there are a number of other factors that need to be carefully considered before this is done. The question that brought this matter up asked whether in and of itself reading the Scripture lessons in church would be a sin for a woman. But since it is not usually an "in and of itself" matter, it would be a practice that involves a number of other important issues that need to be addressed before it is done.
