After All, Mega-Churching Is a Business.

Mega-church downsizes, cuts non-essential members - LarkNews.com - A Good Source for Christian News:

WINSTON-SALEM — Julie and Bob Clark were stunned to receive a letter from their church in July asking them to “participate in the life of the church” — or worship elsewhere.

“They basically called us freeloaders,” says Julie.

“We were freeloaders,” says Bob.

In a trend that may signal rough times for wallflower Christians, bellwether mega-church Faith Community of Winston-Salem has asked “non-participating members” to stop attending.

“No more Mr. Nice Church,” says the executive pastor, newly hired from Cingular Wireless. “Bigger is not always better. Providing free services indefinitely to complacent Christians is not our mission.”

“Freeloading” Christians were straining the church’s nursery and facility resources and harming the church’s ability to reach the lost, says the pastor.

“When your bottom line is saving souls, you get impatient with people who interfere with that goal,” he says.
Faith Community sent polite but firm letters to families who attend church services and “freebie events” but never volunteer, never tithe and do not belong to a small group or other ministry. The church estimates that of its 8,000 regular attendees, only half have volunteered in the past 3 years, and a third have never given to the church.

“Before now, we made people feel comfortable and welcome, and tried to coax them to give a little something in return,” says a staff member. “That’s changed. We’re done being the community nanny.”

Surprisingly, the move to dis-invite people has drawn positive response from men in the community who like the idea of an in-your-face church.

“I thought, ‘A church that doesn’t allow wussies — that rocks,’” says Bob Clark, who admires the church more since they told him to get lost.

He and Julie are now tithing and volunteering. “We’ve taken our place in church life,” he says. •

Tyrant

Brett Meyer has left a new comment on your post "Deputy Doug Englebrecht Is Accountable. So Is SP Ma...":

When an elected official declares himself beyond criticism, and demands that his handling of public matters be kept confidential, and then threatens to accuse those who criticize him of violating the Law; then that elected official has become a tyrant.

Jeske and Ski, Change or DIE!:
No Answer At This Time

Jeski and Ski are success stories?
They depend on:
1. Taxpayer grants (Jeske).
2. Foundation and Thrivent grants (Jeske and Ski).
3. Daddy Warbucks (Jeske and Ski).
Givest thou me a break. I would not skip a rerun of I Love Lucy to hear them.

Intrepid Lutherans, Change or Die! Update

Change or Die - Update

Since our post last week in which we addressed the ill-conceived Change or Die conference scheduled for March 10th, we have not received any communication from Pastor Jeske or Pastor Skorzewski in response to our letter.

When we approached members of the COP to see if they were aware of this conference, we were informed of the following:
  • The WELS Conference of Presidents had scheduled a meeting concerning this conference even prior to our post on Intrepid Lutherans.
  • The WELS COP has unanimously requested that Pastors Jeske and Skorzewski not participate in this conference.

As of this time, the conference brochure and registration form remain unchanged on the Siebert Lutheran Foundation website.

We'll cross that bridge when we come to it. It is our hope and prayer, and even our loving assumption, that the rebuke from God's Word and the request from their overseers in the Church will convince our brothers not only to pull out of this conference, but to see and admit the error of it. That will be cause for great rejoicing.

I remember another time -- about 12 or 13 years or so ago -- that the CoP requested that a someone not go ahead with something that was causing offense in the WELS. They (WLC) went ahead with it anyway. It will be interesting, to say the least, to see what happens in the next few weeks.

I felt compelled to right my own letter to Pastor Jeske and sent it last week via postal mail. Most likely, a return letter has not had time to come back my way. We leave the results of this to God. Perry Lund Grace Evangelical Lutheran Oskaloosa, IA.

Once one draws a line in the sand, there can be no compromise. If indeed right is right and wrong is wrong, the Intrepids must hold their ground, or retreat into the company of fools comprised of those who sit by the side of the road and wait for someone to do something significant. A "request" by the COP is not the decisive action expected or required; they should not abdicate leadership, they should exercise leadership, and make a clear statement that we untheologically trained laymen can clearly understand. Kenneth Jamka
Rev. Paul A. Rydecki said...
To give our leaders the benefit of the doubt, we (at IL) don't know the form this "request" took. It may well be the decisive action required. It may have been more forceful than a request. And they may be planning on making their judgment public once those involved have been given time to respond. We won't let the issue go. For the moment, we will give Pastors Jeske and Ski a little more time to respond, either to us or to the COP, or preferrably to all those who have contacted them, which would seem to be the loving thing to do. This can't drag on for months. The conference is coming up in two weeks. By that time we should know if the pastors involved have accepted the COP's (and our) admonition gratefully, acknowledging their error (which would be cause for great rejoicing), or if they have accepted the COP's (and our) admonition under protest (which would not yet be cause for rejoicing), or if they have rejected the admonitions they have received (which would be cause for even greater concern).

GJ - The loving thing is to rebuke these clowns for even thinking of such a thing, but no one would touch the Lord's Anointed (Jeske) earlier, when he engaged in various union activities before. No one touched Jeske's sock-puppet (Ski) when he and Glende attended many different false doctrine worship conferences.

Ski and Glende bragged about their conferences, Tweeted about them, and took pictures in Seattle and at Andy Stanley's Babtist worship conference.

Did anyone discipline Kudu Don Patterson for gathering WELS workers like Rev. Spikey-Hair for a pan-demon conference in Orlando, Florida? No. But Patterson and Kelm gave papers at The Sausage Factory about improving education there.

Above is a reference to asking Willowcreek's Liberal College to cease and desist from inviting Martin Marty. They "gave WELS the finger," to quote Pastor Guy Purdue and invited him anyway.

The only cease orders issued and obeyed were the one about the Kent Hunter/Waldo Werning conference and the Church and Change Stetzer invitation.

I may have the details wrong, but I think Missouri dis-invited Stetzer at the same time. I know Stetzer lined up Missouri and Church and Change on his official calender. The Changers tried to deny this, which meant I was a liar and Stetzer was a liar. I gleefully posted the material in the blog, with the link to Stetzer's calender, his Tweets, and his snide remarks about Lutheran doctrine.

WELS even had one of the Intrepids (pre-Intrepid) convinced that I invented the information. That is why I copy and paste and link. The material may go away at the URL, as it often does, but it is preserved here.

Willowcreek's Little Chapel Hosts Mark Jeske, Church and Change Conference

WLC

Keynote Speakers

Pastor Mark Jeske

Pastor Mark Jeske

Time of Grace Ministry

Keynote: “It’s Time!”
Pastor Mark Jeske will speak on the theme of this year’s rally (“It’s Time”) which is based on Ecclesiastes 3:1-8: “There’s a time for everything and a season for every activity under heaven.” God in his infinite wisdom and power fits everything into his eternal plan. We work hard as the Lord calls us but then we trust and leave the outcome to Him.

Pastor Jeske believes our times are in God’s hands. Since 2001, he has brought the Word of God to viewers of Time of Grace through weekly 30-minute television broadcasts on six continents to hundreds of thousands of viewers each week.

Pastor Jeske also serves St. Marcus Lutheran Church, an inner city church in Milwaukee, WI. He did not abandon the inner city when racial tensions caused urban flight to accelerate. Instead, with God’s help, he led the struggling church and its elementary school through those troubled times, not only keeping their doors from closing but also helping both to flourish.

He also recently authored a devotional book with a written message from God’s Word for each day of the year. The book? Time of Grace (Concordia Publishing House, 2010)

  1. “Faith & Reason”

Rhodes Scholar Joe Jewell, currently a PhD candidate in Aeronautics at California Institute of Technology, will create discussion on the struggle and blessings of faith and reason in life and the world of academia. Think about Martin Luther’s comment: “Reason is both the devil’s bride and the good gift of God.” Joe is also a Sunday School teacher and member of the Board of Elders at St. Paul’s First Lutheran in North Hollywood, CA.
  2. “The Importance of Friendship”

Do you have friends who feel isolated and empty? Maybe you’ve felt that way in your life. It has been said, “If you want a friend, be one.” Pastor Nate Krause will lead a discussion on the importance of Christian community and learning the skill of friendship. Church and Change.
  3. “Is There a Right Way to Worship?”

Traditional, Contemporary, Blended? How unified does God demand our worship services to be? What’s Jesus’ view of worship? Bill Limmer, campus pastor at UW-Milwaukee, will lead this discussion. Church and Change, famous for plagiarizing a Hybels email while at St. Mark, Depere - Fox Valley.
  4. “Be Relational”

How do we build relationships so we can share the good news of Jesus? Pastor Jim “Ski” Skorzewski from The Core ministry in Appleton, WI will lead this biblical discussion of how to tell your friends the best news in the world! Church and Change board member.
  5. “Understanding & Witnessing to Muslims”

Dr. Erhard Opsahl, who has a doctorate from UW-Madison in medieval Islamic history and the Crusades, will present the historical background of our Muslim neighbors and compare their view of Jesus with Holy Scripture.
  6. Christ-like Leadership: Shepherd or Sheep Dog?

Longtime organizational consultant Kerwin Steffen has facilitated more than a dozen weekend Servant Leadership Retreats for UW-Madison students. In this fast-paced, interactive workshop designed especially for the rally, he will help you explore leadership from a fresh biblical perspective. You will take home new tools that can transform the way you lead—right now and for the rest of your life.
  7. “Think Like Jesus – A Biblical Worldview”

“What’s a worldview, and why should I care about it?” Think of a worldview as a set of basic assumptions that shape us and who we are. Today in America, there are a lot of worldviews that aren’t close to being Christian. Those worldviews are even hostile towards Christianity. This workshop will help us identify those differences and how to hold on to a Biblical worldview. Pastor Glenn Schwanke of Michigan Technological University (Houghton, MI) will lead the discussion.
  8. “Leaving the Gay Lifestyle”

In his article “Desperate for God” (Forward in Christ, May 2010), Scott Barefoot writes that “God’s promise of forgiveness is very real—for all of us.” Scott will explain why he left the gay lifestyle and what Jesus means to him.
  9. “Straight Talk About Satan’s Traps”

Maybe you have a friend with a drug/alcohol addiction or sexual struggles to stay chaste or maybe you are apathetic towards the life God gave you…search the Scriptures with Pastor Jon Bilitz, campus assistant at UW-Lacrosse and discover ways to overcome these traps.
  10. “Helping the Helpless”

Jeff Lang (2001-04 Wisconsin Badger football player who played with Heisman winner Ron Dayne) is a firefighter for the Milwaukee Fire Department as well as a servant of the Lord traveling the world helping people in need, like in Haiti and on the border of Thailand and Burma. Hear about his work (through a group called “Operation Rubicon”) helping people medically and spiritually with the good news of Jesus. See Galatians 6:10. WELS CARE will be at the Rally to present specific opportunities for similar services designed for students.
  11. “Here I am, Send Me!”

Learn ways you can exercise your faith and serve with disaster relief and humanitarian aid while sharing the love of Jesus with people in great need. Mark Vance, Director of Operations with the WELS CARE, will share heartwarming stories from past relief projects, including Haiti, and discuss ways you can get involved at home and around the world.
  12. “What’s God’s Will for My Life?”

How does God want me to use my skills? What major should I take? Should I get married? Baseball great Yogi Berra’s advice is: “When you come to a fork in the road, take it!” Campus pastor Charlie Vann from the U of South Florida, will give you biblical (and better) advice.
  13. “Put Your Faith in Action”

Hear about mission opportunities from WELS Kingdom Workers representatives Judy Eisenmann & John Wiederhold.
...Plus seven more workshops! Stay tuned…

A Note from Pastor Trapp

We are delighted if you can be a part of our Chapel family.
At the Chapel we are learning what it means to be a follower of Jesus and to love one another as he loves us.
We hope you choose to visit us, whether you have questions about God, or about being a life-long follower of Jesus, or somewhere in between.

Our prayer is that you find the Chapel a place where you can meet new friends, have fun, and grow in your journey towards knowing God.

GJ - "It's Time" was the political slogan in the LCMS for replacing Kieschnick with Harrison, making me wonder if that makes it easier for dual-synod Jeske to give the same speech at whatever synod he visits.

More Evidence of WELS Hypocrisy and Apostasy - India To Get Staph Infection from Larry Oh!

How many letters have been sent to shut down Church and Change?
None.

"Professor Lawrence Olson has recently received a call to become Missionary Councilor to India."

That's certainly one way to get rid of a man!

Staff Ministry students were quietly chanting "Take...the...call!" in the hallways.

***

GJ - Olson's Fuller DMin, his qualification for teaching at Mary Lou College would not get him a job at any other college - except the Copy Center. Serving as the C. Peter Wagner Professor of Church Growth was preceded by years of no growth in Love's Park, where another WELS mission drained members from local congregations.

What has India done to deserve Olson? Do they not already have a zillion Fuller grads supervising missions in their sub-continent? Perhaps he will just stay at The Guilt Factory (formerly The Love Shack) and make them feel guilty for not growing. Or he may be in-continent. Either way, India's loss is MLC's gain.

WELS Church and Money Changers Takes Their Cues from John 2

Jesus and the Moneychangers (Boris Olshansky, 2006)

KJV John 2:14 And found in the temple those that sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the changers of money sitting: 15 And when he had made a scourge of small cords, he drove them all out of the temple, and the sheep, and the oxen; and poured out the changers' money, and overthrew the tables; 16 And said unto them that sold doves, Take these things hence; make not my Father's house an house of merchandise.

WELS Report to the Twelve Apostles Districts

I knew that Jeff Davis, board member of Church and Change (photo but no bio) was the co-author of Heart in Focus, a money management seminar.

They have their own website - Training, Heart in Focus.

The WELS Commission on Adult Discipleship (Education, until Wayne Mueller became boss) features Heart in Focus in the new report. Rave review. Get it a NPH.

Dave Kehl was also in Adult Discipleship - another Changer.

Lookee Here - Davis Is Also a Fund-Raiser

Hi, I’m Jeff Davis, one of the authors of Heart in Focus. I’m glad that you are learning more about this special program. I always believe it is good to challenge oneself and learn new things each day. Heart in Focus offers a challenge not usually found in today’s resources. It helps the reader to answer, “Who am I?” and “Why am I here on this earth?”

Answers to these questions give our lives purpose and a reason for living. By enrolling in a Heart in Focus course, I believe you will find help in responding better to these questions.

You may also know me through Cornerstone Stewardship Ministry, Inc., a firm that raises dollars for Lutheran ministries by growing God’s joyful stewards. Visit our web site at www.joyfulgiving.net.

Or, drop me a note to let me know what you think: jeff@heartinfocus.com. May your day be a blessing for Jesus!

Joyful Giving
is a WELS-Missouri fund-raising business. Mark Jeske is not the only Money Changer with feet in both synods (and trotters in the trough).

I was trying to find out about the other author of Heart in Focus. Perhaps someone can trace that down. I am googled out at the moment.

Conflict of Interest
Some may see a conflict of interest. WELS sends in overpaid Fuller-trained consultants to help a congregation. They recommend a pop band and a multi-million dollar building program. Somehow Fuller-trained Cornerstone gets called in, and they charge fees plus a commission on the loot taken in. The congregation ends up with a big mortgage, and the Money Changers make a killing on both sides - overcharging for boilerplate consulting (using the same template, too lazy to get the church name right in some cases) and overcharging for money-raising.

The common thread here is WELS' own in-house beehive of apostasy: Love Shack Church and Changers, Fuller-trained consultants who are Changers, and a board member of Church and Change raising money for the improvements urged by a fellow-Changer. NPH sells a product urged by Adult Discipleship, a CGM renaming of Adult Education. Thus the money circulates among the same people, congregations are impoverished, and nothing good comes of it.

The Gurgle clan is thoroughly Church and Change. Look at what they have done for themselves the synod. MilCraft estate? - totaled. Schwan funds gusher - insolvency. Mary Lou Chapel - mysterious delay in finding the lost treasure. Patterson's multi-site misspelling extravaganza - excitement.

Brett Meyer asked if I changed my mind about SP Schroeder's leadership. I just look at the outward symptoms, which tell me nothing has changed. Magic is misdirection of the eyes. The magician gets everyone to look at the exploding ball of flame while he tucks a rabbit under his cloak. If he is quick and smooth, and no one notices, the rabbit disappears. Poof. Gone in a flash.

It is not the fault of one person, but 1000 enablers - the clergy, who think they have nothing to lose by remaining silent.

In the brochure WELS Pastors received a while back, Ron Roth and Jon Mahnke were the featured WELS guys, along with Wayne Mueller, and then the two (or three) LCMS fellas. The WW DP was confronted about this obvious fellowship in ministry, but has not, to date, responded - at least not publicly. So goes the WELS.

WELS church lady has left a new comment on your post "WELS Church and Money Changers Takes Their Cues fr...":

Here are two paragraphs taken from Prof. Mark Paustian's More Prepared
To Answer:

"The usher is looking decidedly uncomfortable. The offering basket has hit a snag in the pew ahead of you. A boy is clutching a nickel in his chubby fist, which Mom is shaking over the basket. She peals back one finger at a time, whispering the sort of whisper that echoes around the sancuary, "Let go!" Finally, the boy, desperate to know why God wants his money, releases the treasure. The nickel drops home, the usher relaxes...and God is five cents richer."

"Just as there was a Judas among the first disciples of Jesus, there are those within the visible church who will do anything they can to get your nickel into the plate. Though I pray they are few, there are those who will lie to you, pressure you, and shame you for the sake of money. I make no apology for them. These things are shameful."

Will do anything they can to get your nickel into the plate? Prof Paustian, you might be right on this point. Another thing that is shameful: Church and Change along with its partner Cornerstone Ministries. Mark, you attended a chruch and Change conference. Do you make an apology for them and are their things shameful? If you are telling the greatest story ever told, how about standing against the Church and Money Changers!

In Christ,

BELIEVE IT OR NOT!
Part III

THE DOUBLE STANDARDS AND HYPOCRISY IN THE WELS
by
Pastor Mark F. Bartling

Ripley’s famous and interesting “believe it or not” oddities, filled with extraordinary and almost unbelievable information, still fascinate us yet today! Recent events in the Wisconsin Synod (WELS) may also seem unbelievable and the oddities will truly stretch your imagination.

In baseball it is only asked that the umpire be consistent. Call a wide strike zone or a narrow one. But be consistent! Don’t call one pitch a strike, but another a ball, when both crossed the plate at the same place.

In politics, when a Democrat moves away from a pro-life to a pro-choice position, it is called “growing.” But when a Republican changes to a more pro-life position, well, that is called hypocrisy.

One can understand hypocrisy and a double standard in politics. That is what politics are all about. But not in the Church of God!!! There one is called to a higher standard.

Believe it or not! The WELS synodical president and Vice president refused to print in the Book of Reports and Memorials a memorial, from 86 pastors and 3 congregations, to the Synod’s convention asking for a study of the Synod’s position on fellowship. But at the same time they made available the synodical mailing list and e-mail addresses to the Church and Change group. This group is leading the way in undermining the Synod’s position on fellowship in inviting heterodox teachers to address their annual meetings. Talk about a double standard! It can now be said that WELS leaders official endorse and approve the modern Church Growth Movement.

[GJ - Next someone will claim that Patterson and Gurgle are Church and Changers. Kudu Don denies it! and I am almost persuaded. Gurgle is organizing their New Age multi-site church. Chicanery, thy name is Gurgle.]

Believe this or not! When synodical leaders are involved in situations concerning appearances of impropriety and improper behavior, -- well, that must be quickly covered up. Recently, one synodical leader was found spending a considerable amount of time alone with a woman in frequent “counseling sessions,” both at church and in her home. But here we are told to put the best construction on it and not sin against the 8th Commandment. But when a young pastor of a small congregation, and with no high synodical connections or relatives, is involved in practically the same type of situation – well, he must be put out of the ministry and his Call, for now he is no longer “blameless.” (I Tim. 3:2)
One is for synodical officials, another is for parish pastors.

Believe this or not! In the WELS today a situation exist that is not too much different from the time of the Reformation, when men like Luther were excommunicated for being “too Catholic,” but the sellers of indulgences were protected and defended, -- for they were bring in the money.

If some pastor talks about private confession, making the sign of the holy Cross in the name of the Triune God, the sacrament of ordination, every Sunday Communion, wearing full liturgical vestments, and publishes a “motley magpie” (all which, by the way, are taught in our Lutheran Confessions) – well, that is being Catholic and such pastors are quickly excluded from our fellowship. But when other pastors completely omit any type of confession, public or private, use no Trinitarian invocations, continuously confuse law and Gospel in their sermons, practice open communion, with women helping in the distribution, have women read Scripture lessons in public worship, and use every innovation of Church Growth methods, -- well, that is to be highly praised and no one even thinks of calling the practice “too Methodist.”

Believe it or not, but the WELS is becoming just another Protestant Church and many congregational worship services are not too much different from the Baptist and Pentecostals churches on the next street. Just read some of the mission statements and tell me whether they are Confessional Lutheran or just Protestant.
A sainted WELS pastor, from a past century, in deep distress concerning the direction of his Synod, lamented:
WELS, oh WELS, wherefore art thou my WELS?
Bewitched, Bothered, and Bewildered
Oh foolish, WELS, who hath bewitched you?

All is not well, in WELS!

Gurgel and Mueller, President and VP of WELS, refused to print this memorial in the Book of Reports and Memorials.

To: The Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod in Convention 2007

Subject: Definition of the expression “Framework of Fellowship”
WHEREAS 1) various groups within the Synod have arranged for speakers not in fellowship with the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS) to address them on matters relating to doctrine and on practical aspects of conducting the ministry; and

WHEREAS 2) some in our Synod question whether seeking such instruction from the heterodox is consistent with Scripture’s urging to “watch out for false prophets” (Mt. 7:15) and “keep away from” errorists (Ro. 16:17) and whether welcoming the errorist may constitute “sharing in his wicked work” (2 John 11); and

WHEREAS 3) groups inviting such outside speakers have defended the practice with the explanation that the speakers were addressing them “outside the framework of fellowship”; and

WHEREAS 4) references to “the framework of fellowship” are appearing more frequently in the literature of the WELS, but there exists neither a clear and commonly-accepted definition of what that phrase entails nor a thorough explanation of how the phrase is consistent with Scriptural principles of Christian fellowship; and

WHEREAS 5) disagreement over this issue is threatening the bond of peace within our beloved Synod; and

WHEREAS 6) it has been argued that a new study of the Scriptural principles might cast doubt on the Synod’s current position of Christian fellowship; and

WHEREAS 7) a review of those principles that aims to supply an element not currently addressed in our doctrinal statements would not cast doubt on the Synod’s current doctrinal position on fellowship; therefore be it

Resolved a) that the Synod instruct the conference of Presidents (COP) to conduct a thorough review of the Scriptural principles of fellowship with the aim of developing a clear and complete definition of what constitutes the “framework of fellowship” and a thorough explanation of how the phrase is consistent with Scriptural principles; and be it further

Resolved b) that the results of this study be published and shared broadly with the constituency of the WELS; and be it finally

Resolved c) That the COP be instructed respectfully to request that, in a spirit of brotherly cooperation, groups affiliated with the WELS defer from employing public speakers from outside the WELS fellowship who will discuss matters relating to doctrine and practical aspects of conducting the ministry until such a study can be completed.

History of WELS Masonic Lodge - Church and Change

They have a plan,
and their thoughts are not His thoughts,
their ways are not His ways.

History of Church and Change

In 1995, a group of about 10-12 men gathered at Wisconsin Lutheran College to discuss current methods of sharing Jesus which were commonly being used in the WELS at that time. Many at the first meeting felt that those methods of sharing Jesus were not “keeping up with” the rate of change in society. The message of the Bible was not, therefore, penetrating society very well.

In 1998 two men who had attended the first meeting planned a Church and Change conference in Green Bay, Wisconsin. The next year there was a second conference in Green Bay. About 20 people attended each year.

In May 2001, WELS Parish Services applied for and received a Forward in Christ grant to conduct a three-year pilot program to address the issues surfaced by the previous two Church and Change conferences. The three-year pilot program was designed to be a grassroots gathering of individuals who were pioneering new innovative methods of sharing the gospel of Jesus Christ with a changing culture.

Three annual conferences were planned and held beginning in 2001. At the first conference, approximately 50 WELS members attended. The attendance grew to 150 in the second year and 180 in the third year. By the third year, the attendees included more than just individuals who were actively pioneering new and innovative methods for sharing Jesus. Many in attendance wanted to learn about how to better share the gospel with the changing culture in which they served. In addition to the three annual conferences a variety of other workshops and gatherings were held dealing with specific ministry issues such as leadership, worship, and women’s ministry.

At the final conference of the three-year pilot, held in November 2003, the conference participants enthusiastically encouraged the organizers to continue Church and Change. A steering committee was subsequently formed from among the participants to address the future direction of Church and Change.

From November 2003 until the present the steering committee has met and drafted a proposal that addresses the future of Church and Change.

Plagiarism is NOT a Sin in WELS

Plagiarism is a sin.

Plagiarism is NOT a sin in WELS, because:

1. Known plagiarists are rewarded with calls and speaking invitations to synodical events.
2. Congregations which tolerate plagiarism are given mission subsidies and foundation grants.
3. Anyone who questions plagiarism is treated like dirt under the fingernails.

In higher education, plagiarism:

A. Is good for immediate expulsion from some universities.
B. Results in a certified letter from the school's attorney, at the very least.
C. Keeps that individual from an academic position for life.
D. Ends in a professor's dismissal from his teaching position.

Plagiarism is dishonest and reveals a lazy, deceitful personality - but it is also against the law!

Phony Love and Fake Unity Trump Orthodoxy -
The Pietists Claim

Many identify with the screaming woman,
burdened as they are by Harkey-leaders.

Harkey: "We want love as much as orthodoxy, yes, a thousand times more than what some men call orthodoxy." F. Bente, American Lutheranism, 2 vols., The United Lutheran Church, Gen Synod, Gen Council, Un Syn in the South, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1919, II, p. 121.

"In the Lutheran Observer, January 2, 1863, H. Harkey wrote: 'Some say that unity must precede union. But the Bible demands that we unite. Hence those who magnify these differences [among Lutherans] are the greatest sinners in the Church.' This has always been the view of the General Synod: union, irrespective of doctrinal differences...all endeavors at union which disregard the divine norm of Christian fellowship are anti-Scriptural." F. Bente, American Lutheranism, 2 vols., The United Lutheran Church, Gen Synod, Gen Council, Un Syn in the South, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1919, II, p. 19.

"And Paul commands that godless teachers should be avoided and execrated as cursed. Galatians 1:8; Titus 3:10. And 2 Corinthians 6:14 he says: 'Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers; for what communion hath light with darkness?'"
Marks of Antichrist, 41, Treatise on the Power and Primacy of the Pope, Concordia Triglotta, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1921, p. 517. Tappert, p. 328. Galatians 1:8; Titus 3:10; 2 Corinthians 6:14.

1 Corinthians 10:20 But I say, that the things which the Gentiles sacrifice, they sacrifice to devils, and not to God: and I would not that ye should have fellowship with devils.

2 Corinthians 6:14 Be ye not unequally yoked together with unbelievers: for what fellowship hath righteousness with unrighteousness? and what communion hath light with darkness?

Galatians 2:9 And when James, Cephas, and John, who seemed to be pillars, perceived the grace that was given unto me, they gave to me and Barnabas the right hands of fellowship; that we should go unto the heathen, and they unto the circumcision.

John 1:7 But if we walk in the light, as he is in the light, we have fellowship one with another, and the blood of Jesus Christ his Son cleanseth us from all sin.

"Wherever Lutherans unite with the Reformed, the former gradually sink to the level of the latter. Already by declaring the differences between the two Churches irrelevant, the Lutheran truths are actually sacrificed and denied. Unionism always breaks the backbone, and outrages the conscience, of true Lutheranism. And naturally enough, the refusal to confess the Lutheran truth is but too frequently followed by eager endorsement and fanatical defense of the opposite errors." F. Bente, American Lutheranism, 2 vols., The United Lutheran Church, Gen Synod, Gen Council, Un Syn in the South, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1919, II, p. 68.

"Truthful separation is far better than dishonest union, and two churches are happier, and more kindly in their mutual relations, when their differences are frankly confessed, than when they are clouding with ambiguities and double meanings the real divergences." Charles P. Krauth, The Conservative Reformation and Its Theology, Philadelphia: The United Lutheran Publication House, 1913 (first edition, 1871), p. 326.

"If one associates much with heretics, one finally also makes oneself partaker of their false doctrine, their lies, and their errors; for he who touches pitch soils his hands with it." Martin Luther, What Luther Says, An Anthology, 3 vols., ed., Ewald Plass, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1959, II, p. 646.

"The orthodox character of a church is established not by its mere name nor by its outward acceptance of, and subscription to, an orthodox creed, but by the doctrine which is actually taught in its pulpits, in its theological seminaries, and in its publications. On the other hand, a church does not forfeit its orthodox character through the casual intrusion of errors, provided these are combated and eventually removed by means of doctrinal discipline." (A Brief Statement of the Missouri Synod's Doctrinal Position, 1932) Francis Pieper, The Difference Between Orthodox And Heterodox Churches, and Supplement, Coos Bay, Oregon: St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1981, p. 2.

"Unionism is characterized by these marks: It fails to confess the whole truth of the divine Word; it fails to reject and denounce every opposing error; it assigns error equal right with truth and creates the impression of church fellowship and of unity of faith where they do not exist." (Wisconsin Synod, Prayer Fellowship, Tract No. 10, 1954) Francis Pieper, The Difference Between Orthodox And Heterodox Churches, and Supplement, Coos Bay, Oregon: St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1981, p. 64.

"We have no intention of yielding aught of the eternal, immutable truth of God for the sake of temporal peace, tranquility, and unity (which, moreover, is not in our power to do). Nor would such peace and unity, since it is devised against the truth and for its suppression, have any permanency. Still less are we inclined to adorn and conceal a corruption of the pure doctrine and manifest, condemned errors. But we entertain heartfelt pleasure and love for, and are on our part sincerely inclined and anxious to advance, that unity according to our utmost power, by which His glory remains to God uninjured, nothing of the divine truth of the Holy Gospel is surrendered, no room is given to the least error, poor sinners are brought to true, genuine repentance, raised up by faith, confirmed in new obedience, and thus justified and eternally saved alone through the sole merit of Christ." (Closing of Formula of Concord, Trigl. p. 1095) Francis Pieper, The Difference Between Orthodox And Heterodox Churches, and Supplement, Coos Bay, Oregon: St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1981, p. 65.

"The real question is not what do you subscribe, but what do you believe and publicly teach, and what are you transmitting to those who come after? If it is the complete Lutheran faith and practice, the name and number of the standards is less important. If it is not, the burden of proof rests upon you to show that your more incomplete standard does not indicate an incomplete Lutheran faith." Theodore E. Schmauk and C. Theodore Benze, The Confessional Principle and the Confessions, as Embodying the Evangelical Confession of the Christian Church, Philadelphia: 1911, p. 890.

"Dr. Luther, who, above others, certainly understood the true and proper meaning of the Augsburg Confession, and who constantly remained steadfast thereto till his end, and defended it, shortly before his death repeated his faith concerning this article with great zeal in his last Confession, where he writes thus: 'I rate as one concoction, namely, as Sacramentarians and fanatics, which they also are, all who will not believe that the Lord's bread in the Supper is His true natural body, which the godless or Judas received with the mouth, as well as did St. Peter and all [other] saints; he who will not believe this (I say) should let me alone, and hope for no fellowship with me; this is not going to be altered [thus my opinion stands, which I am not going to change]." Formula of Concord, Epitome, Article VII, Lord's Supper, 33, Concordia Triglotta, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1921, p. 983. Tappert, p. 575.

Lutheran Allergies - Luther, Chemnitz, Lenski,

Lenski was the greatest author of the old ALC, and they formed a committee to silence him about inerrancy.
Read about him and his daughter Lois here.

I became a Lutheran at the age of 16, when there was great excitement about the publishing of Luther's work. In my seventh grade class at John Deere Junior High, Moline, the teacher mentioned Luther and half the class erupted in cheers.

The typical Syn Conference pastor does not read Luther or grasp his basic teachings. The professors are even worse, passing along their ignorance and veiled animosity.

The Hyper-Europeans of the LCMS seem to read every theologian except Luther.

Chemnitz is ignored. Chytraeus is unknown.

WELS makes a point of putting down Lenski, a man of remarkable achievement. He was a parish pastor, a district president, a seminary professor and dean, and the author of many books beside his famous New Testament commentary.

The authors mentioned above would be the best antidotes to the neo-Pietism buzz of today. No one who read Examination of the Council of Trent would think of joining Rome.

A study of Luther's basic writing would destroy UOJ forever.

The best one-volume companion to Lutheran theology is the Book of Concord, which contains the writings of Luther, Melanchthon, Chemnitz, and Chytraeus.

My favorite Book of Concord symbol is the Large Catechism of Luther, which was edited from his sermons.

A close second is the Formula of Concord, because all the topics of today are addressed in eloquent, clear language. You will never hear the UOJ fanatics quote from "The Righteousness of Faith" or even ponder the meaning of that sub-section. They have far greater authorities to quote, like J. P. Meyer from Cocoa, MO.

The Schwaermer are allergic to these authors because they detect the aroma of pesticide: they are the pests.

Shelby County History

In 1899, the Lenski family took up residence in the Anna parsonage as Pastor Lenski began his duties. In 1907, he saw the dedication of St. Jacob Evangelical Lutheran Church which he helped design and oversee in construction. Today this 92 year old edifice still stands as a testimony to his vision and foresight to build a magnificent house of worship.

In 1930, my father, Rev. F.J. Mittermaier, became the pastor of St. Jacob Church. He had been instructed at the seminary by Dr. Lenski. My father devoted all his energy to the work of the Lord. He loved to read scripture in the original Greek and would often have to be told to "put down his book and eat his oatmeal before it got cold." Receiving an honorary Doctor of Divinity degree as the most outstanding rural pastor in Ohio, he preferred not to be known by any title but that of pastor. Throughout the 33 years of his ministry in Anna, he maintained the deepest regard for his mentor, Dr. Lenski. For him it was a special blessing to be pastor of the Anna church. Often he loved to go to the church, sit in the pew, and watch the rays of the setting sun as it shone brilliantly on the head of Christ window above the altar.

In 1932, the congregation celebrated its 100th anniversary. Dr. Lenski returned to preach. As a small child, I clearly recall seeing this man who had olive skin, a heavy mustache, and intense blue eyes. Dressed in a white linen suit and Panama straw hat, he was a striking figure as he smoked a large cigar. After asking permission of my mother, he took my hand and off we went to the local ice cream parlor.

The Lutheran Confessions - No Middle Ground

Martin Luther is the greatest of all Christian theologians,
but Lutherans hardly read his works today.
Start with the Large Catechism.

But we entertain heartfelt pleasure and love for, and are on our part sincerely inclined and anxious to advance, that unity according to our utmost power, by which His glory remains to God uninjured, nothing of the divine truth of the Holy Gospel is surrendered, no room is given to the least error, poor sinners are brought to true, genuine repentance, raised up by faith, confirmed in new obedience, and thus justified and eternally saved alone through the sole merit of Christ." (Closing of Formula of Concord, Triglotta. p. 1095) Francis Pieper, The Difference Between Orthodox And Heterodox Churches, and Supplement, Coos Bay, Oregon: St. Paul's Lutheran Church, 1981, p. 65. Tappert, p. 632. Heiser, p. 294. FC SD #94-96.XI,

Missouri, WELS, the Little Sect on the Prairie, and the mini-micro-sects all claim to have a quia subscription to the Book of Concord. The Lutheran Church is the only denomination with a common, world-wide, culture-transcending confession of faith. The Book of Concord is also the best Biblical commentary in one volume. The Triglotta provided an excellent history as well.

There is no middle ground for the Lutheran Confessions. They are either the ruled norm for all doctrine and practice or they are not. Many pastors and leaders pay lip service to the Confessions, but they are hardened in their hearts against this great treasure of spiritual wisdom.

All the DPs and CPs need to be examined for their position on the Book of Concord, not so they can merely repeat the time-worn words, the repeat-after-me phrases that got them through seminary.

The leaders of WELS, Missouri, ELS, and the CLC (sic) have gone over to generic Christianity. These apostates imagine that their indifference is the best approach, but a non-confessional Lutheran is really an Anti-confessional unLutheran.

What have the Anti-confessional leaders of WELS accomplished? I can list them easily in WELS, and the parallels in the other groups are similar:

1. They hide or eliminate the Sacraments.
2. They are ashamed of the name Lutheran and avoid it at all costs. They even avoid church.
3. They despise the historic, Biblical liturgy, and substitute entertainment for the Means of Grace.
4. They rely on Pietistic lay-led cell groups because they do not trust the Means of Grace.
5. They study and worship with unconfessional groups who openly mock the Lutheran Church, the Confessions, the liturgy, and the sermon.
6. They copy the sermons, graphics, and even the promotional notes of Groeschel and other non-Lutherans.
7. They work actively to punish and get rid of faithful Lutherans, laity and pastors alike.
8. They rely on their grapevine of slander, but they howl "Slander! Eighth Commandment! Matthew 18!" whenever someone identifies their false doctrine.

ELCA got to its current stage of degenerate apostasy by becoming Anti-confessional. Those changes also began with little steps, each one barely opposed.

GJ - People used to make fun of the Assemblies of God for bribing kids into coming to church. Valleskey's pal Radloff was the mission counselor for this area.

Who might the sponsoring pastor be? Doebler? Doebler? I have read that name before.
