LutherQueasies Fulminating about the "Short" Ending of Mark - Dealt with in A.D. 2000 in Thy Strong Word , But They Have No Trouble Teaching against the Chief Article of Christianity

Read this out loud without laughing - this is what unites Cascione, Webber, McCain, Harrison, and the Preus Crime Family. These sheep-whisperers are late to the party. What was sacrificed first - Justification by Faith or the ending of Mark?

Excerpted from a November 12, 2019, Reclaim News article, "LCMS Declares God Did Not Write Mark 16:9-20," by Rev. Jack Cascione.

quote:
With the publication and distribution of the Concordia Commentary Mark Vol. 2, by Dr. James Voelz, just before Thanksgiving, the LCMS has become the Grinch who stole the Catechism.

One day, in its magisterial wisdom, the LCMS decided that God did not write Mark 16:9-20. All the Lutheran catechisms, liturgies, hymnals, services, and books on the Sacrament of Holy Baptism will have to be rewritten, new footnotes added to the Book of Concord, and 145 footnotes added to the American Edition of Luther’s Works.

Textual Work: the Ending of Mark’s Gospel

Let us look at one text in Mark and see what the manuscript evidence is. An ordinary Bible will not help. Footnotes mention some ancient witnesses, as if they were people. The witnesses are manuscripts. Details explaining the changes are missing. No explanations are offered. And yet, this is not a difficult matter to discuss.  I was told by my Harvard trained college professor, a Lutheran Church in America pastor, that the early Church noticed that the ending of the second Gospel was rather abrupt, stopping at Mark 16:8, so they made up another ending, Mark 16:9-20. Liberals said, “Thank God we now have better manuscripts than the King James Version had, so we can get rid of the manufactured ending and stop the Gospel at 16:8.”

The liberals could not explain why anyone would end a Gospel with the word “for.” The Greek word gar (“for”) is never found at the end of a sentence, let alone at the end of a book. This adverb gar is post-positive, meaning that it is not used as the first word in a phrase. Like the contemporary question, “And?” it assumes completion.

KJV Mark 16:8 And they went out quickly, and fled from the sepulchre; for they trembled and were amazed: neither said they any thing to any man; for they were afraid.

One theory held that the Gospel was mysteriously broken off at Mark 16:8, letting people imagine death or persecution. Given the value of written texts in the early Church, the abrupt ending is difficult to explain adequately. According to Bruce Metzger, the best known textual expert in America, one 12th century manuscript of Mark broke off at Mark 16:8 with the Greek letter tau indicating the end of a lection and more text following.11 For this reason he rejects that particular manuscript as evidence for the abrupt ending. Nevertheless, Metzger argues very strongly for excluding the traditional ending of Mark, giving little evidence against his view, but he offers three alternative explanations for the ending at Mark 16:8 –
1. The author intended to end his work with “they were afraid.”
2. The Gospel was not finished.
3. The Gospel lost its last leaf before it was copied. (The most probable in his opinion.)12

Justin Martyr used vocabulary from the traditional ending in his Apology, written about 155 AD. Although we do not know exact dates for the New Testament Gospels, it is likely that the entire New Testament was completed before 100 AD. That makes the possible allusion to the traditional ending extremely early. A website about Justin Martyr and other saints made the observation that the early Roman emperors persecuted the Christian Church because they were trying to preserve the old Roman ways. The active persecution of an impoverished and illegal religion might explain the problem with the ending. Justin Martyr was beheaded with six of his students, one of them a woman. My United Bible Society Greek New Testament (Aland third edition) has notes for the variant readings. Similar decisions about which words or sections to include or exclude are made about Shakespeare and all important authors, but most people are not aware of it. The Shakespeare Variorum is an enormous work with variant readings of the dramas. The Yale Shakespeare, in one volume, is the result of many different editorial decisions. Although Shakespeare belongs to the modern age, scholars still argue about the authorship of the plays. Did he write some or all of them? Or did the Earl of Oxford? Or Bacon? If a Shakespeare play began with as much uncertainty as many sermons, no one would pay attention to Shakespeare either. The actor would begin, “Scholars are not sure whether William Shakespeare wrote this play. We chose which lines we would use in performing the play, but no one agrees which words are actually his, or Oxford’s, or Bacon’s, depending on which book you read.”13

The Aland edition of the New Testament omits the traditional ending of Mark, supporting this reading with Vaticanus, Sinaiticus, and a few additional witnesses. The traditional ending is supported by Alexandrinus, Epraemi Rescriptus, Bezae Cantabrigiensis, and many others. The position of Vaticanus and Sinaiticus looks very lonely, but aha, do not they agree with each other? Are they not better and earlier? Can we not find it in our hearts to forgive that forgotten scribe who added a few verses to Mark, just to improve the Gospel? Vaticanus does not include the traditional ending of Mark, but the copyist left more than a column of space blank. That was long before the days of “this page intentionally left blank.” At the very least we can assume that the scribe knew of the traditional ending. That leaves Sinaiticus stranded. It is one thing to say that Mark’s Gospel ended abruptly, for no known reason, and that an ending was added. But, if two major witnesses against the traditional ending do not even agree completely with each other, then snipping off verses nine through twenty seems arbitrary, arrogant, and deceitful. St. Jerome knew about manuscripts omitting Mark 16:9-20, but he was convinced of the authenticity of the traditional ending. W. R. Farmer concluded: “In fact, external evidence from the second century for Mark 16:9-20 is stronger than for most other parts of that Gospel.”14 Now we have a great dividing line on this subject. Most of the conservatives have surrendered to Westcott and Hort, abandoning the Majority Text. And yet, an author who accepted the modern theories about the New Testament text, said this about the ending of Mark:

J-002
“In favor of Mark 16:9-20 there are a host of witnesses: the Alexandrian Manuscript, the Ephraem Manuscript, Codex Bezae, other early uncials, all late uncials and cursives, a number of old Latin authorities plus the Vulgate, one Old Syriac manuscript, the Syriac Peshitta version, and many other versions. Besides, there is a plain statement from Irenaeus (early Christian writer) which clearly shows the existence of Mark 16:9-20 in the second century and the belief that Mark was its author. In brief this is the negative and positive data on the question. On one hand is the unparalleled reliability of the Vatican and Sinaitic Manuscripts; on the other hand is almost all of the other evidence. J. W. McGarvey wrote a capable defense of Mark 16:9-20 in his Commentary on Matthew and Mark. It was first published, however, in 1875, before the great work of Westcott and Hort on the Greek text was completed. Yet McGarvey’s, with a few minor modifications, can stand with credit today.”
Neil Lightfoot, How We Got the Bible, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1963, pp. 74f.

Vaticanus and Sinaiticus have “unparalleled reliability,” except in one of the most important passages of the New Testament—the ending of Mark. If the claim does not match up with the data, then the claim is wrong.15 In light of the concessions made by Lightfoot above, the treatment of the traditional ending of Mark in the New International Version is worth noting. After Mark 16:8, a line appears in the text, indicating a break. The following heading appears above Mark 16:9-20:

“[The most reliable early manuscripts and other ancient witnesses do not have Mark 16:9-20.]”16

Someone who has not read the research on the ending of Mark—and this material is fairly difficult to find—would conclude from the NIV that Mark 16:9-20 does not belong in the Bible. He would not know that the only major manuscript unambiguously omitting the ending is Sinaiticus and that this “most reliable manuscript” suddenly appeared without a so-called family of copies to back it up. Since Missouri Synod and Wisconsin Synod professors participated with the liberals and tongue-speakers of the NIV translation team, a conservative Lutheran would assume that the bracketed information is in harmony with orthodox Lutheran doctrine. In fact, no other Bible translation is so brassy in disdaining the traditional ending of Mark. If a modern scholar’s training goes against the traditional ending of the Second Gospel, and he still supports the Majority Text conclusion of Mark, then the untrained person can see that the case against Mark 16:9-20 is very weak indeed. For the sake of comparison, consider what Westcott and Hort have done to millions of Christians. The Beck Bible published by Christian News has also omitted the traditional ending of Mark with a footnote, following Westcott and Hort.17 When a faithful Lutheran reads this Bible, after being exposed to the King James Version, he is led to believe that the Christian Church was deceived for centuries. Luther was wrong. Tyndale was wrong. All the Reformers were wrong. How can the average Christian check the facts? In front of him is the latest Bible printed by a conservative Lutheran. He has no way of discovering, apart from a theological library, that the manuscripts favored in the new edition have no history at all. If a farmer bred cattle or pigs without knowing their genetic heritage, he would be considered lazy or foolish.

The ultimate result of Westcott and Hort enthusiasm has planted doubt about the entire New Testament text.18 Ironically, the Majority Text is rejected by liberals today because of its heritage, its careful preservation in the Christian Church, its thousands of manuscript witnesses, its consistency, its harmony in many different forms. Even the mysterious Vaticanus tips its hat to the Majority Text, by making room for the traditional ending of Mark.

“We must conclude that fidelity to the New Testament text has been abandoned since the publication of the Revised Version in 1881.”19

At Home in the Purple Palace:
Head-Faking the Conservatives

The LCMS replaced Kieschnick with Matthew Harrison, wafted on a wave of nostalgia about good ol' CFW Walther. If only the Missouri Synod could get back to those days of kidnap, robbery, and hand-picked mobs!

Artful Dodger says that Missouri pastors do not adore Walther as much as I claim. I am aiming at the Bronze Age pastors who buy Walther statues and make pilgrimages to his shrine. No other Lutheran sect gets so carried away with a usurper founder.

According to Missouri Synod opinion, the only divine call is a call to a congregation. Paul McCain, Harrison's devoted campaign manager, has artfully dodged a parish call for 20 years. Therefore, he is not a Missouri pastor and should not impersonate one. Nevertheless, Harrison chose the blogger gun-nut to preach an installation sermon in the Purple Palace, with various synod brass in the audience. Apparently all the parish pastors were too busy to preach.

McCain just had to post a photo of himself in clergy regalia, preaching at the service. So I am asking Syn Conference loyalists - Do you think Hopeless (Moldstad), Helpless (Schroeder), or Hapless (Harrison) will rescue the situation?

Universalism Everywhere:
ELCA, Rome, Syn Conference.
Let Us Disbelieve Together in Love

Herman Otten was bewailing Universalism in the Church of Rome but not in the LCMS. I saw an editorial that sound Universalistic, by Scott Murray, LCMS, another UOJ friend of Paul McCain and Otten, the odd couple who elected Al Barry and Matt Harrison.

Scott asked, "What must I do to be saved?" He answered himself, not from the Scriptures, but from his UOJ talking points. The answer is "literally. Nothing. It is done."
Christian News, 8-22-2011, "Nothing To Conquer," p. 4.

Acts of the Apostles
KJV Acts 2:37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do?

Acts 2:38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

The Gospel of John
KJV John 6:26 Jesus answered them and said, Verily, verily, I say unto you, Ye seek me, not because ye saw the miracles, but because ye did eat of the loaves, and were filled. 27 Labour not for the meat which perisheth, but for that meat which endureth unto everlasting life, which the Son of man shall give unto you: for him hath God the Father sealed.

28 Then said they unto him, What shall we do, that we might work the works of God?

John 6:29 Jesus answered and said unto them, This is the work of God, that ye believe on Him whom He hath sent.

The Apostle Paul
KJV Romans 4:24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

KJV Romans 10:8 But what saith it? The word is nigh thee, even in thy mouth, and in thy heart: that is, the word of faith, which we preach; 9 That if thou shalt confess with thy mouth the Lord Jesus, and shalt believe in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead, thou shalt be saved.

The Holy Spirit moves us to faith through the Means of Grace
The UOJ fanatics want to say they are devoted to grace, but they obliterate faith and the Means of Grace. They have to eliminate the Holy Spirit's work in the Word because their foundation is Halle Pietism - not Biblical, Lutheran doctrine.

I know something about modern theology because my professors studied under Barth, Tillich, Bultmann, and Moltmann. Stan Hauerwas, on my dissertation committee, is the best known theologian in America. Martin Marty recommended the publication of my dissertation, and so forth. Marty was good enough to lecture at Wisconsin Lutheran College, so he must be kosher for WELS.

The names are relevant because my studies meant reading hundreds of books of modern theology, not to mention writing essays based on those studies and lectures.

UOJ, mainline theology, ELCA, and modern Romanism all share the same basics of Universalism, expressed with a little variety. As someone said about gardens, "Each one is unique, but few are original."

When Team Ichabod was discussing What Happened To Knapp, the Founder of Double-Justification?, I found the clue. Knapp is largely forgotten, overshadowed by men like Schleiermacher, but the old Halle Pietist is still in print. My English copy is dated from 1830, and Knapp's Halle lectures began long before that. But people are still printing and buying his lectures from 180 years ago.

More importantly, Knapp became the gold standard for mainline theology.

Knapp's double-justification scheme, starting with the justification of the entire world, turned easily into Step One as a solo. Schleiermacher, considered the father of modern theology, studied at Halle and taught at Halle, specializing in Step One Universalism.

I remember many a mainline theology book warning. "We must not make this contingent upon faith." Similarly, Syn Conference types glare and say, "Do not make faith a work of man." Those who are giddy with UOJ love to emphasize unbelief as a virtue.

God creates and nurtures faith through the Gospel in the Means of Grace. Since faith is the foundation for the Christian life, unbelief is the basis for all sin and evil.

Many are in deep pain as they realize their synods teach against Luther's doctrine, contrary to the Book of Concord. The results are everywhere. One friend went to  a WELS service where the congregation was involved in worshiping with the help of their volunteer kazoo band.

When the going gets weird...the weird turn pro...hunter thompson

When the going gets weird...the weird turn pro...hunter thompson

Well, this explains a lot of the cyberstalking, misogyny, and bullying you see on Lutheran message boards and blogs coming from CPH executive and Lutheran pastor Paul T. McCain.
LCMS has some explaining to do if this website is funded or expensed to the Missouri Synod or CPH.
This doesn’t reflect well upon the CPH or the LCMS.
Even if cyberbrethren is his personal blog site, he’s still an officer of the CPH and by extension he makes the denomination look like stereotypical bitter clingers.
I’m from the Midwest not the South, we use colorful metaphors to dismiss this kind of behavior, “redneck hillbilly”--- a throwback to another time.
This is not the appropriate venue to talk about gun prowess precisely because this person is an officer of a publishing house and a pastor who makes frequent mention of it everywhere he presents himself on an international basis.
It’s conduct unbecoming a pastor--especially the VDMA on pistol grips.

“My VDMA 1911 .45 Pistol: An Homage to the Smalcaldic League and the Lutheran Reformation
April 12th, 2011

I received a set of custom grips for my 1911 handgun, and decided to have inscribed on them the symbol that was widely used by the Lutheran princes throughout the Reformation era, the famous: VDMA, standing for the Latin motto Verbum Domini Manet in Aeternum. This symbol was inscribed on swords, cannons and armor used by the Smalcaldic League which was formed to be a mutual defense organization, against the Catholic princes trying to overthrow the Reformation in the various territories of Germany that had embraced it.
Here is a photo of my 1911 with my VDMA grips, following that, another brief explanation of the VDMA symbol, as usual for a really large version of the image, click on it and then click on it again and you’ll have it.”

In this day and age it will cause offense to others as it did to me, despite what our Lutheran forefathers did. I think it might have been better to keep that picture to yourself.

With respect, Pastor, I also found this disturbing.
“For though we walk in the flesh, we are not waging war according to the flesh. For the weapons of our warfare are not of the flesh but have divine power to destroy strongholds.”
There are many who will not understand the historical context of what you are saying, and will see this as an endorsement of using force to bring the Word of God to people.
This image bothered me, even though I’m a fan of Lutheran history and the wife of a gun collector.

It’s creepy because you’re not in the same position as the Lutheran princes in the Smalcaldic League who faced the real threat of Catholic aggression. Putting VDMA on a pistol while living in 21st century St. Louis is just silly and, yes, more than a little weird. It’s like those Goth kids in high school who like to pretend they live in the Middle Ages. It’s a phase you hope they grow out of, but apparently some people never stop playing pretend.

Thomas, you probably could have made your point, or maybe not, without resorting to silliness, but…regardless…let me assure you that next time I take the 1911 to the range, I will shoot several magazines with great joy, in your honor, celebrating my Christian and American rights and freedom to do so. That you don’t “get it” is unfortunate, but that’s ok. Some people who have an animus over against guns never will. I gladly join the fathers of our faith who placed VDMA on their weapons to remind themselves that their struggle against evil was a struggle for the Word of God’s truth and purity. Precisely because I live in Saint Louis, Missouri, I carry firearms to defend myself and my family, aware, at all times, that while flesh and grass fade, the Word of the Lord endures forever.

What Luther Says.......False Teachers Are Peacocks

J-642.1

"The peacock is an image of heretics and fanatical spirits. For on the order of the peacock they, too, show themselves and strut about in their gifts, which never are outstanding. But if they could see their feet, that is the foundation of their doctrine, they would be stricken with terror, lower their crests, and humble themselves. To be sure, they, too, suffer from jealousy, because they cannot bear honest and true teachers. They want to be the whole show and want to put up with no one next to them. And they are immeasurably envious, as peacocks are. Finally, they have a raucous and unpleasant voice, that is, their doctrine is bitter and sad for afflicted and godly minds; for it casts consciences down more than it lifts them up and strengthens them." What Luther Says, An Anthology, 3 vols., ed., Ewald Plass, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1959, II, p. 642. ( ripped off from Ichabod The Glory Has Departed )

McCain Still Fueling Ichabod Hits

LCMS SP Harrison's campaign manager, Paul McCain, is  charming everyone on Steadfast Lutherans, just as he has on the ALPB Forum (where he was given a time out, banned, and returned to repeat the same blunders).

McCain:
The First Amendment does not apply at blog sites, they are all moderated, in varying degrees. I’m saying the editors of this blog would be well advised to exercise a bit more responsible oversight re. the comments posted here. Kind of what I already said. I’m totally for the ordination of women, just asking (sic)  anyone. [insert big eye roll here]
Vehse: Paul, the suggestion would be mutual except that your posts on BJS and the other Lutheran blogs provide readers the best opportunity to see just what kind of person currently works as Publisher and Executive Director of Concordia Publishing House and calls himself an “LCMS pastor.”

Wallenstein:

And yet you never allow anyone to post on Cyberbretheren the kinds of comments you regularly post on other people’s blogs. Editor McCain: Why not raise the issues in private with the LCMS pastors who run this site. Thanks.

More Wallenstein:

The LCMS as an organization has way too many internal problems in order to be effective. Most of the blog postings are negative. Where’s the good news? Steadfast, ALPB and Lutherquest have convinced me that the LCMS is full of mean-spirited pastors who are constantly at each others throats. Look at Pastor McCain argue in public with Pastor Scheer and with other “Confessional” pastors over on ALPB. Embarrassing. Blogs such as this one have convinced me that the LCMS is a sick organization that needs to be reformed. Koinonia cannot happen soon enough. Call us laymen impatient, but please consider that we have only been waiting 40+ years for the LCMS to re-tool. Ok, carry on………

Rev. Paul T. McCain : I wish they would be more active, and I’d suggest that Carl Vehse be disinvited from bloviating all over this forum.

Timothy Shenks: What’s this with “they” being more active, as if you don’t know who “they” are? Rev. McCain, you know full well that the BJS webmaster is the same person who administers some of your own personal websites.

Wallenstein: Would Pastor Harrison please rein in Editor McCain. He is making a lot of enemies here and over on ALPB. This onetime Pastor does not reflect well on the public image of CPH. The LCMS pays him handsomely to blog all day. HE is yet another reason why I refuse to give a penny to District or Synod.

The “Willow Creek Lutherans” shun CPH materials in favor of Willow Creek (Duh!). “Confessional” Lutherans are your biggest customers, and you spend hours insulting them on various blogs. How pastoral is that? Way to alienate your customer base, Editor McCain.

Clyde Nehrenz:
I conclude from all of Mr. McCain's entries on Luther Quest since he imposed himself here, that although holding the prestigious position of Publisher at CPH he is, as a person, simply a nasty little man.

McCain:
Oh, now Clyde, there you go again . . .

For whatever reason, you have spent decades slandering and defaming and bearing false witness against faithful pastors and teachers of our Synod, so you'll have to excuse me if I do not pay much attention to your vituperative remarks here.

SP Harrison's Campaign Manager -
A Man in Full

McCain is busy at two other blogs while posting on his. He has a divine call to blog, unlike those fake pastors who actually preach and teach each Sunday.

ALPB Forum

I am equally concerned about Paul T. McCain's constant demonizing and hammering of the ELCA. Others here actually attempt to engage in dialogue; but Paul T. McCain only sends condemnations and the mean, pompous, ain't-it-awful postings which are as tiresome as his flacking for his employer. Charles Austin, ELCA Pastor. Retired.

Steadfast Lutherans (One of the Lobbying Arms of Team Harrison)

Frankly, PTM, I don’t care about your comment policy. It’s your blog, do anything you please. There.

What I am trying to do is point out to you, that you do, on everyone else’s blogs, what you won’t allow on your own! As enough people have said by now, you contribute a lot of the undesirable behavior here on BJS yourself. It’s embarrassing that you don’t recognize the fact! If you really can’t stand the way this place is run, find yourself another playroom!

Paul T. McCain:
Rick, I know you are a smart guy, so your willful ignorance on this issue is really baffling. You are actually willing to say that LCMS Lutheranism's English Bible tradition trumps the use of the Apocrypha in every Luther Bible since 1534 when it was published?

Seems that the best response to any intelligent information you receive on this point is to respond with silly pictures and comments.

Identify the Author and His Job

McCain loves my Photoshops. He wrote that himself. He is no longer banned by the ALPB hall monitors.

"There were not many calls. There was one issues in absetntia and one issues to one woman who was at the service."

Let's see if he ever fixes it.

Brett Meyer has left a new comment on your post "Identify the Author and His Job":

Taking a blind stab here -

Author: Father Paul McCain
Job: Heretic
Occasion: Preaching on the festival of St. Mary Magdalene as his mother, Jean McCain, was being called into the Pastoral Office by the Grace Lutheran Church in Leslie, MI. (LCMS).

Favorite pastime: Persecuting the Faithful.

Favorite Memory: Father John Neuhaus who left the Lutheran Church, denied Justification by faith alone, and died in the arms and confession of the Antichrist.

"He opened several doors for me while I served The LCMS President, making it possible for LCMS leadership to make direct contact with the Vatican, when ELCA leaders were intent on cutting us out of formal conversation with Rome."

"I felt Richard John brought to the Romanism he embraced a hearty and full measure of the joyful Gospel rediscovery of Martin Luther, for which I am grateful."

GJ - Brett, you get an A for accuracy and a B for brevity. I was looked for: "Paul McCain. CPH Editor and spare room blogger."

McCain told SP Al Barry that Otten refused to meet with the LCMS leader. That was not true. Anyone who knows Otten realizes that he will meet with anyone. After all, Otten met with Kieschnick before the Texan became SP. Otten worked feverishly and secretly with McCain to get Barry elected.

I always wondered why Barry did not get in the staff limo and have his Iago drive him to New Haven, Missouri, 100 miles away. As Luther says in the sermon for this week (Lenker set), the world is ruled by rage and shunning. Barry embraced and mollified the Left in Missouri, but turned his back on the people who elected him.

In Case You Wonder What Paul McCain Does For a Living

Paul McCain - no call, no advanced degrees, no problem.
He has an opinion on everything.
Like all UOJ Stormtroopers, he is the essence of charm and winsomeness.
A graduate of Concordia, St. Louis,
sent me the review of McCain's epic fail.

From Extra Nos

Paul McCain said...

Mr. Jackson is a sad and pathetic character. I believe he suffers from some serious emotional conditions about which we can only but feel a lot of pity.

I've learned over the years that personalities like Mr. Jackson thrive on attention, and so desperate and hungry for it that they will do anything they possibly can to be noticed, recognized and given the kind of respect they think they deserve.

Mr. Jackson has moved from Lutheran church to Lutheran church, bouncing from one to another and another and then yet another.

He is now reduced to a fake house/bedroom church and feels a need to lash out and any all real/imagined errors.

His anger and bittnerness oozes out of his every post.

The only thing to do with people like Mr. Jackson is forgive them, and commend them to God's grace and then simply ignore them.

By the way, at its latest convention The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod specifically named and commended "Concordia :The Lutheran Confessions" and recommended it be the edition of the Lutheran Confessions read and studied by the congregations and members of the Synod.

***

GJ - I search the Net for tidbits about Lutheran doctrine. My favorite stop is Extra Nos. I wondered - why does he have so many comments about his proposed trip? Offers of help? But no, Paul McCain wanted to publish his standard rant. Alt-F8 macro, name - Jackson.

I have done everything wrong. I signed my name to articles in Christian News.

McCain did not.

I opposed Church Growth and published extensively on the topic.

McCain ducked, bobbed, and hid from the topic, with St. John Ellisville a few miles from the Purple Palace. And Benke worshiping with anything that moved. "Ecumenical wherever he went," Benke bragged.

I took the time and spent the money to get a PhD in theology, not to mention the money I spent going to see various theologians and leaders - not synod offering money, either.

McCain managed to spend two extra years at seminary without earning an advanced degree. Dyxlexia? Torpor? Too much time politicking?

I have served congregations since 1973, taking a three year break, so that means 34 years of pastoral service.

McCain has no call, served only one parish while running Barry's covert campaign via Otten. Time allegedly in the parish - three years.

I continue to write books about Lutheran theology. In fact, I reviewed a book in CN that McCain suggested and it sold like hotcakes. He reviewed one of my many books, too.

McCain has no bibliography to speak of...

I find myself humming the words from the HMS Pinafore whenever McCain publishes on the Net, hourly, even on Facebook, even on the WELS discussion page. And you know the topic. Here is the real message:

Sir Joseph.
When I was a lad I served a term
As office boy to an Attorney's firm.
I cleaned the windows and I swept the floor,
And I polished up the handle of the big front door.

Chorus.
He polished up the handle of the big front door.

Sir Joseph.
I polished up that handle so carefullee
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Chorus.
He polished up that handle so carefullee,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Henry Lytton as Sir Joseph 1920
Sir Joseph.
As office boy I made such a mark
That they gave me the post of a junior clerk.
I served the writs with a smile so bland,
And I copied all the letters in a big round hand.
Chorus.
He copied all the letters in a big round hand.

Sir Joseph.
I copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Chorus.
He copied all the letters in a hand so free,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Sir Joseph.
In serving writs I made such a name
That an articled clerk I soon became;
I wore clean collars and a brand-new suit
For the pass examination at the Institute.

Chorus.
For the pass examination at the Institute.

Sir Joseph.
That pass examination did so well for me,
That now I am the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Chorus.
That pass examination did so well for he,
That now he is the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Sir Joseph.
Of legal knowledge I acquired such a grip
That they took me into the partnership.
And that junior partnership, I ween,
Was the only ship that I ever had seen.

Chorus.
Was the only ship that he ever had seen.

Sir Joseph.
But that kind of ship so suited me,
That now I am the ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Chorus.
But that kind of ship so suited he,
That now he is the ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Sir Joseph.
I grew so rich that I was sent
By a pocket borough into Parliament.
I always voted at my party's call,
And I never thought of thinking for myself at all.

Chorus.
He never thought of thinking for himself at all.

Sir Joseph.
I thought so little, they rewarded me
By making me the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Chorus.
He thought so little, they rewarded he
By making him the Ruler of the Queen's Navee!

Sir Joseph.
Now landsmen all, whoever you may be,
If you want to rise to the top of the tree,
If your soul isn't fettered to an office stool,
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.

Chorus.
Be careful to be guided by this golden rule.

Sir Joseph.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen's Navee!

Chorus.
Stick close to your desks and never go to sea,
And you all may be rulers of the Queen's Navee!
