I Shocked Various Lutheran Pastors, Telling Them - "Saddleback is Babtist."
No!

Robert Schuller plagiarized one occultist and was honored for promoting Napoleon Hill, a lying, criminal, self-styled "business genius". Schuller insisted on dropping denominational names so Saddleback went one step more - nothing about "church"! WELS and LCMS went for the apostasy package like a hungry fish for the worm.

Christina and I spotted Saddleback on our California tour. We saw "Purpose Driven Drive" and concluded the church was there. I did not know Warren was a Babtist until I saw the immersion pool outside.

The "confessional, conservative, orthodox, quia" WELS-ELS-LCMS-CLC sects are very fond of Warren's programs and approaches. Other idiots have provided their own spin on Warren's spin on Schuller's spin on Norman Vincent Peale's plagiarism of another book.

A former Peale protege and a Unitarian minister think so.

In the current issue of the journal Lutheran Quarterly, the Rev. John Gregory Tweed of Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and the Rev. George D. Exoo of Pittsburgh write that many of Peale’s uplifting affirmations originated with an “obscure teacher of occult science” named Florence Scovel Shinn. Lutheran Quarterly is a juried academic journal of theology and history, with a national circulation of 1,000.

After comparing his books to hers, the authors cite scores of specific instances in which Peale and Shinn not only think alike but use similar or identical phrases.

Tweed began investigating the Shinn-Peale link in 1990. Friends who credited Shinn for their success had given Tweed her book, “The Game of Life and How to Play It.”

“I came across the phrase, ‘When one door shuts, another door opens’ - one of the great Peale battle cries,” said Tweed.

Shinn, who died in 1940, drew on mystical sources dating to the ancient Egyptian philosopher Hermes Trismegistus and the secrets of Freemasonry, as delineated in “The Kybalion,” published in 1908 at a Masonic lodge."

Rick Warren
"He also studied at Fuller Theological Seminary in Pasadena, California and earned a Doctor of Ministry."

Warren is on the Matt Harrison diet and doing well.

Like his hero Robert Schuller, Warren made his church stance as vague and faith-neutral as possible, much like the WELS-ELS-LCMS today. He published the fact that a conference at Schuller's church (now a Catholic cathedral) changed his life.

Now WELS Is Plagiarizing Church Membership - St. Mark De Pere, Wisconsin

Denver Seminary is the source of his drive-buy D.Min.

St. Mark, DePere - If you search the New Testament for evidence of a formal church membership process, you won’t find it. The reason for this is simple – they didn’t need it. Pretty much anyone who showed up was considered a “committed member” for several reasons: (1) Persecution – The New Testament makes it clear that many of the churches operated in hostile environments. This reality acted as a natural filter that weeded out the uncommitted; (2) Scarcity – There simply weren’t as many churches around back then as there are in modernday America. Today, with dozens of churches in most cities, it’s easy to church “hop and shop” for months, if not years, leading to uncertainty and confusion regarding who is and who isn’t committed to a local church; and (3) Mobility – We live in the most transient society in the history of the world. People move for any number of reasons. In biblical times, people moved around far less, sometimes spending a lifetime in one town or village, thereby making it much easier to know who was – or at least should have been – at church. For all these reasons church membership is a practical response to the very real challenges of our time and culture. It allows the church community to know who’s “in” so that we can focus our time and energy on living as a biblical community, rather than wasting it on trying to figure out who’s in the community in the first place.

GJ - The rest of the St. Mark De Pere contract is almost the same as the website material from Sunnyvale, California - whose head past is a Calvinist. St. Mark is the congregation that posted "their" sermons verbatim from other sources on the church website. (Thou shalt not steal?) Once they were caught, the sermons could only be obtained from the church secretary.

Plagiarism in WELS

In defense of the Babtists - they voted against having the New NIV displayed in their bookstores. In contrast, WELS has made the NIV their official translation, though they may deny it.

The Problem with Pastoral Plagiarism

Plagiarism is pandemic in higher education, so much that online universities have mandatory "plagiarism checkers" for every single assignment. When they post their work, the software starts looking for text-matching, which is not perfect but certainly handy.

Apart from dishonesty and laziness, the problem with plagiarism is the lack of study and reflection on the text of the Bible. The popular sermons are quite shallow and manipulative, so their effect is to take the pastor farther away from the Word than before.

WELS has a great formula at Mordor. They hate Lenski for teaching Justification by Faith. The faculty encourages "good sermons writers" to share on a server so the overworked, hungover brothers do not have to write their own. WELS leadersare so full of themselves that they make the graduates think they have reached a genius level of Biblical studies, even though their education has been watered down year after year, following the LCMS-ELCA model.

In the past WELS has paid pastors to attend Fuller and Willow Creek, so they can grow their churches the way Calvinists do.

How you gonna keep them down on the farm,
After they've seen Church Growth?
How you gonna keep them away harm
After they've heard such things from Parlow?

At Gettysburg Seminary, in the good old days, seminary was a series of Greek and Hebrew courses in the Scriptures, with homiletical courses added - German preaching expected.

Many pastors were intellectual giants because of their constant study, as were the leaders of the Lutheran Reformation.

We are not all equally moved to study and write, but this formula is still true for all composition -

"Great writing comes from great research, because research is the energy behind thought and composition." - G. Jackson

I teach that to every class I have whether it is an MA in education or a graduate degree in theology. Those who linger and malinger at the textbook level have nothing new to say. They simply repeat the bromides they have learned from the text.

When I read the verbose volumes of liberal scholars, I usually see the endless repetition of rationalism from the past. The theologians are anxious to prove they have devoured the works of Karl Barth, or more honestly - his mistress Charlotte Kirschbaum. Thus we have Calvinistic human reason on both sides, with nothing to offer from the Word itself.

Halle University launched the Easter Absolution of the Entire Word (without faith, of course). Halle also promoted Biblical rationalism and culminated in Schleiermacher's pivot into modernism - faith without belief. He taught the academics to write enormous volumes where all the words of faith were used, but emptied of meaning. That remains the "genius" of Barth-Kirschbaum, the theology of Fuller Seminary, and the method of the modern Lutherans who ape Calvin so marvelously well.

Barth and his Commie mistress - Charlotte Kirschbaum. He plagiarized the documents/research his colleagues sent him, kind of a Walmart of theology. Charlotte did all of his research and received no credit until very late.

Ow! - I need eye bleach. This is the after picture.

Calvinist Copycats Cleverly Cover Up for Each Other

The Lutheran Librarian sent me a link about Calvinists covering up plagiarism for each other.

https://thouarttheman.org/2019/10/29/plagiarizer-derek-w-h-thomas-offers-opening-prayer-in-u-s-house-of-representatives/

Start of quotation from the article linked above:

Derek W.H. White and Mark Driscoll have proven that plagiarism matters little in the American Evangelical subculture.
Fresh off a slap on the wrist from the Catawba Presbytery for what the nameless group of men classified as “unintentional plagiarism,” The distinguished Dr. Derek W.H. Thomas had the honor of offering the Opening Prayer in the U.S. House of Representatives yesterday.
According to Wikipedia, Dr. Thomas, Senior Pastor at First Presbyterian Church of Columbia, SC and a professor at Reformed Theological Seminary, has yet to make a public statement about his plagiarism. It appears likely he never will, choosing instead to let his good friend, Dr. Ligon Duncan speak for him.
Duncan, Chancellor of Reformed Theological Seminary, appears to be a man of poor discernment, first defending C.J. Mahaney and now Derek W.H. Thomas.
Quoting from Wikepedia: “Reformed Theological Seminary, which he [Thomas] works for as a professor, also cleared his name, saying, “an RTS committee reviewing the Acts incident had cleared Thomas of ‘any knowing and intentional plagiarism.’ He [Ligon Duncan] added that Thomas will continue to teach. ‘From the standpoint of RTS,’ Duncan wrote, ‘the case is now closed.'”
Of course, it is. Who would dare argue with the influential Chancellor?
End of quotation from the article linked above.

GJ - I wrote back that there are many cases like that in Lutherdom, especially among those who want the label only when convenient.
CPH editor Paul McCain copy and pasted material from other blogs and copiously copied from The Catholic Encyclopedia, forgetting the quotation marks and almost completely eliminating the sources. LutherQuest (sic) let McCain post his links for a long time, even after I proved how much plagiarism existed in those LQ links.
No apology. No retraction.
Likewise, though I repeatedly asked McCain's boss about an editor engaged in blatant plagiarism, it was not Kintz' business for some odd reason. The plagiarized blog disappeared.
No apology. No retraction.
Glende and Ski engaged in the same kind of plagiarism, but they were defended by the WELS DP at the time.
No apology. No retraction.
Discipline followed in the Glende/Ski situation. They excommunicated the lawyer who pointed out the truth and spoke to them about it.
WELS Church and Changer John Parlow posted "his" sermons on the church website. They were clearly taken from other sources. He addressed the situation by stating - Copies of the sermon may be obtained from the church secretary.
In one hilarious incident, WELS pastors Parlow/Limmer had the same reaction as the Willow Creek skirt chaser, verbatim. Maybe I can find it in my archives.

Subject: Letter from Pastor Limmer (not sure how Limmer got added, but he was)

Dear St. Mark Family,
I have never been an early riser all my life. And so for someone like me to be tossing and turning two hours before sunrise, after a fourteen hour work day at St. Mark...well that is worth trying to figure out. Jet lag? Nope. I have been in the same time zone for weeks. Family trouble? Nope. My family still graciously puts up with all my quirks. Anxiety? The world has its share of troubles, and I like many of you, have felt the need to pray more fervently for so many who are suffering. But after reflecting on that for a little while, I knew that wasn't the root cause of my sleeplessness.

Being the seasoned spiritual leader that I am, I finally resorted to a formula that has been a secret embarrassment to me for decades: "When all else fails...turn to God and ask for help." When I quietly breathed a prayer for insight from above, the Spirit whispered, "It is old fashioned excitement, Bill. You felt it in years past when Holy Week services were filled with a sense of anticipation and wonder and you are feeling it again now. It is a good thing. In fact, why not revel in the fact that you have been doing something for fifteen years and you love it so much that you can't sleep come ‘game day’." Duh.

Last night I prayed for Scott as I knew he would be putting on the finishing touches for the three Maundy Thursday Services. And today I'm contemplating the final rehearsals for our Good Friday services, and felt a sharp pang of sadness that it is not being broadcast all over the world. It was that touching to me. I was completely convinced that any and all who experience it will be moved to tears as I was, and as irresistibly drawn to the Crucified One. The Tenebrae services are at 12:30, 3:30 and 6:30 tomorrow.

Earlier in the day John, a few others and I reviewed the Easter message. (Remember we are at West High, 966 Shawano Ave. at 7:30 and 9:30 a.m.) As the group left my office, I sat with John and we grieved over the fact that we would only be having eight Holy Week services! All John and I could talk about was the redemptive potential of the next four days. Who knows what God might do--in how many lives?!

Friends, don't miss anything these next few days. Don't miss private promptings from God regarding what He wants you to reflect on this Holy Week. Don't miss a single opportunity to ask additional friends and family to come with you to the services. Don't miss the teaching moments with young children that this season affords. Miss a little sleep...but don't miss anything else. Deal?
Bill

Subject: Sleepless in Barrington (from Bill Hybels)

Dear Enews Family,

I have been an early riser all my life. It goes back to growing up in a family that owned a fresh produce business. But for someone like me to be tossing and turning two hours before sunrise, after a sixteen hour work day at Willow...well that is worth trying to figure out. Jet lag? Nope. I have been in the same time zone for weeks. Family trouble? Nope. We recently returned from one of the most enjoyable vacations we have ever had.

You felt it in years past when Good Friday and Easter services were filled with a sense of anticipation and wonder and you are feeling it again now. It is a good thing. In fact, why not revel in the fact that you have been doing something for thirty years and you love it so much that you can't sleep come ‘game day’." Duh.

Last night I sat through the final rehearsals for our Good Friday services, and felt a sharp pang of sadness that it is not being broadcast all over the world. It was that touching to me. I was completely convinced that any and all who experience it will be moved to tears as I was, and as irresistibly drawn to the Crucified One. The first service starts tonight at 7:00 p.m. (And then we get to do it three more times on Friday--at 4:00, 6:00, and 8:00 p.m.!)

Earlier in the day God had graciously given my Easter message to me, after which the team and I reviewed the Easter program one final time. As the group left my office, I sat alone for just a moment and grieved over the fact that we would only be able to do it seven times! At the end of my workday Greg Ferguson and I did our typical run, but at a ridiculously fast pace, because all we could talk about was the redemptive potential of the next four days. Who knows what God might do--in how many lives?!

So, that's why I'm pecking at my laptop well before the guys with broken exhaust systems deliver the newspapers . . .raw spiritual amperage. And at my age...it is a good thing.

Deal?

Bill

Crossword Puzzle Plagiarism - Stealing Is a Problem But in WELS and the Missouri Synod

A Plagiarism Scandal Is Unfolding In The Crossword World

http://fivethirtyeight.com/features/a-plagiarism-scandal-is-unfolding-in-the-crossword-world/

Agroup of eagle-eyed puzzlers, using digital tools, has uncovered a pattern of copying in the professional crossword-puzzle world that has led to accusations of plagiarism and false identity.
Since 1999, Timothy Parker, editor of one of the nation’s most widely syndicated crosswords, has edited more than 60 individual puzzles that copy elements from New York Times puzzles, often with pseudonyms for bylines, a new database has helped reveal. The puzzles in question repeated themes, answers, grids and clues from Times puzzles published years earlier. Hundreds more of the puzzles edited by Parker are nearly verbatim copies of previous puzzles that Parker also edited. Most of those have been republished under fake author names.
Nearly all this replication was found in two crosswords series edited by Parker: the USA Today Crossword and the syndicated Universal Crossword. (The copyright to both puzzles is held by Universal Uclick, which grew out of the former Universal Press Syndicate and calls itself “the leading distributor of daily puzzle and word games.”) USA Today is one of the country’s highest-circulation newspapers, and the Universal Crossword is syndicated to hundreds of newspapers and websites.
On Friday, a publicity coordinator for Universal Uclick, Julie Halper, said the company declined to comment on the allegations. FiveThirtyEight reached out to USA Today for comment several times but received no response.

The Techlin Case - No One Addressed the Real Issue

 http://welsdocument.blogspot.com/2015/03/synod-appeals-process-what-happens-when.html?showComment=1425594862793

But the congregation itself gave no scriptural or doctrinal basis, either--the Board of Appeals could not "incorporate by reference" (to use a lawyerly term) what did not exist in the first place.

The entirety of the reasoning for the congregation (and therefore the Board of Appeals, since they have no other ground to stand on--the DP's letter also makes it clear that this is the supposed "doctrinal basis"), went like this:

1) Techlin questioned Glende's unusual practices, especially those which seemed to come from heterodox sources and reflect those sources in their doctrinal content
2) Glende is WELS
3) Therefore, Techlin must be questioning WELS teachings

Nevermind that Techlin's entire concern revolved not around "WELS teachings", but specifically actions that Glende took which do not appear to be in line with WELS or any other Lutheran theology. Nevermind that Glende's circuit pastor at the time agreed with Techlin (and still does). THIS is the doctrinal crux of the question and it was never addressed by the congregation, the Board of Appeals, or the DP. No one.

A Clarion Call For Faithfulness To The Word
And
For Faithfulness To The Tenor Of The Gospel
A Presentation And Discussion Of Various Concerns
That Have Been Raised Recently In Our Midst

What is it that has prompted this clarion call to faithfulness, over and above the encouragement that is continually given to all pastors in our synod to “watch your life and doctrine closely.”8 Over the past couple of years a number of issues and concerns have been brought before the District Presidium by various individuals, involving doctrine, practice, and approaches to ministry. Some of them were cleared up immediately, some were the result of misunderstandings and miscommunication and
were resolved through extensive discussion, some fall under the category of legitimate differences of opinion on approaches to ministry, and some called for continued evangelical warnings to the brethren to help them avoid straying from the Word, the Lutheran Confessions, and the tenor of the gospel. It must be stated that at no point in time did the District Presidium find false doctrine being espoused or promoted by anyone. However, through extensive discussion of these matters it became clear that it would be to the benefit of all the brothers in the District to join the discussion, to be the beneficiaries of the fruit of the discussions the District Presidium has already had on these matters, and to receive guidance, direction, and evangelical warning in regard to them, so that we all may continue to be faithful to the Word and faithful to the tenor of
the gospel.
Pastor D.J. Engelbrecht
NWD Pastoral Conference
October 25-26, 2011

From Me (Tony Kubek Jr.) Excerpt from A Clarion Call For Faithfulness…page 2. The document is 18 pages long. If the entire doc is desired, perhaps it can be obtained through a NWD pastor or its presidium. The sentence in the above excerpt that begins with the words (It must be stated...) clarify the misgivings some have. The presentation by the former NWD DP to the district's pastors reflects, precisely, the concerns Mr. Frederick "Rick" Techlin, expressed to his former pastors and congregation. Several pastors and I, who stand with Rick, met with the NWD Presidium, area circuit pastors and WELS President, Pastor Mark Schroeder to discuss the issues highlighted in the paper. The "warnings" and "admonishments" in the presentation validate Rick's concerns.
