Upcoming Conferences
Dear WELS Called Worker,

Greetings from Wisconsin Lutheran College!

We are excited to announce that Wisconsin Lutheran College is hosting two conferences in the upcoming months that may be of interest to you.
Hearts and Hands of David Worship Workshop
In April, in conjunction with the church band Koiné, the college will host a workshop on modern artistry in Lutheran Worship.

The "Hearts and Hands of David" workshop is designed to connect, encourage, and grow artists and musicians who use modern technology, art, and instrumentation in Lutheran Worship.

For more information on the event, which will be held April 20-21, please visit the workshop's website.
2012 Leadership Conference
In June, the college's Center for Christian Leadership will host the 2012 Leadership Conference, in consultation with the Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary and the WELS Commission on Congregational Counseling.

The conference will facilitate a Biblical and honest discussion of how pastors and lay leaders work together to advance Christ’s kingdom. It is designed for WELS laymen, laywomen, and pastors. The conference’s goal is to provide practical leadership skills and tools applied to your church’s context.

To download a brochure or review the agenda for the June 8-9 event, visit the conference's website.

We hope to see you on the Wisconsin Lutheran College campus in the near future.

Your brother in Christ,

President Johnson

GJ - Readers - please read all the material on Kelm conference and try to identify some names. Perhaps I am blind.

Kelm, the Prince of Darkness in WELS, cannot stand opposition, cannot deal with it. The best way is to keep the information secret so no one can object.

Continued WELS passivity will let the deceit and stealth continue. That helped create the Joel Hochmuth debacle, where multiple heinous crimes against children were being committed at The Love Shack itself, but "no one knew" although "he already had counseling" and "we assured him of his forgiveness" just before he pleaded NOT GUILTY. --- LutherRocks has left a new comment on your post "Don't Fail To Miss This Wisconsin Lutheran College...": And there you go. Laymen, LAYWOMEN and pastors on equal ground when it comes to the ministry; together at a leadership conference no less. They really should totally emasculate themselves of the Lutheran name. Wisconsin Evangelical Reformed Synod would pay homage to the old Prussian Union.

2004 - The Sexual Abuse of Children
In the Archdiocese of Milwaukee.
Cover-Up Artist Archbishop Weakland Spoke at Wisconsin Lutheran College (WELS)

Archbishop Weakland was blackmailed by his boyfriend,
so he embezzled money from the Catholic Church.
WLC asked Weakland and a number of priests to lecture the public,
then tried to deny the facts.

The Sexual Abuse of Children in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee:

The Sexual Abuse of Children in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee
Submitted February 10, 2004 by:
Peter Isely
Jim Smith

"After 1985, all churches in the United States were on notice that they cannot put priests who have had incidents of having sexual abuse in parishes or any setting where they would have access to children.  For the church authorities to have allowed this to happen was sinful, more than negligent, and I believe they should be held accountable."
Father Thomas Brundage
Judicial Vicar of the Milwaukee Catholic Archdiocese

Introduction
Official history, Camus once observed, is written by those who make history, not those who suffer from it.

A recently published authorized history of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee runs some 800 pages.  It is dedicated to the legacy of retired Archbishop Rembert G. Weakland, who served the archdiocese from 1977 to 2002.  Exhaustively and meticulously chronicled, the document reviews thousands of events and personalities that have shaped the character and quality of the Church of Milwaukee.

What the reader will not locate within this otherwise comprehensive survey is a single recorded instance of the crime of clergy sexual abuse.* Absent also is any indication of what Milwaukee’s Catholic bishops knew or did about these terrible crimes.

* Throughout this text "clergy" refers to ordained diocesan and religious order priests, deacons, and vowed religious order nuns and brothers. Pending Wisconsin legislation defines "clergy" as members "of a religious order, and includes brothers, ministers, monks, nuns, priests, rabbis, and sisters."

Has WLC Converted Milwaukee Yet?

The new college chaplain, Paul Calvin Kelm, can relate to non-Lutherans.

rhs (http://rhs.myopenid.com/) has left a new comment on your post "Jeske Rules and Rocks":

I attended the conference monday. WLC's spotlight was a laughable video detailing everything they do except their Lutheran heritage and 'Lutheran' teaching.

Ironic isn’t it that pastors attack self-centeredness and selfishness when they embrace those qualities so strongly and appeal to selfishness of individuals who want to feel saved.

GJ - Mencken said, "No one ever went broke by underestimating the taste of the American people."

WLC is non-profit and non-WELS (when it suits them), but WLC is a business.

I predict most of the WELS/ELS schools of higher education will be gone or radically different in five years.

Jeske Rules and Rocks

"Full speed ahead!" as the captain of the Titanic said on that fateful night.

Garrett has left a new comment on your post "Deputy Doug Englebrecht Re-Elected: WELS Will Cont...":

The Timid Lutheran is spot on. Wisconsinites are all impressed by Jeske's successes, and cloud their vision to look closer at his teachings.

I attended the conference monday. WLC's spotlight was a laughable video detailing everything they do except their Lutheran heritage and 'Lutheran' teaching.

Archbishop R. Weakland - WLC Lecturer

"Archbishop Rembert Weakland was the fair-haired boy of the liberals when he was out campaigning against Ronald Reagan’s policies, when he was doing his anti-war, anti-defense protests, and when he was defending liberation theology in Latin America.

Weakland was curiously silent in other major issues like abortion. The life of hypocrisy and deceit that Weakland led make him a fitting source for the New York Times. One hopes that he may find forgiveness in God. He should be less fortunate on earth."

---

"The second source was Archbishop Rembert Weakland, retired archbishop of Milwaukee. He is the most discredited and disgraced bishop in the United States, widely known for mishandling sexual-abuse cases during his tenure, and guilty of using $450,000 of archdiocesan funds to pay hush money to a former homosexual lover who was blackmailing him. Archbishop Weakland had responsibility for the Father Murphy case between 1977 and 1998, when Father Murphy died. He has long been embittered that his maladministration of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee earned him the disfavor of Pope John Paul II and Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, long before it was revealed that he had used parishioners’ money to pay off his clandestine lover. He is prima facie not a reliable source." Source.

---

Here is the relevant timeline, drawn from the documents the New York Times posted on its own website.

15 May 1974

Abuse by Father Lawrence Murphy is alleged by a former student at St. John’s School for the Deaf in Milwaukee. In fact, accusations against Father Murphy go back more than a decade.

12 September 1974

Father Murphy is granted an official “temporary sick leave” from St. John’s School for the Deaf. He leaves Milwaukee and moves to northern Wisconsin, in the Diocese of Superior, where he lives in a family home with his mother. He has no official assignment from this point until his death in 1998. He does not return to live in Milwaukee. No canonical penalties are pursued against him.

9 July 1980

Officials in the Diocese of Superior write to officials in the Archdiocese of Milwaukee about what ministry Father Murphy might undertake in Superior. Archbishop Rembert Weakland, archbishop of Milwaukee since 1977, has been consulted and says it would be unwise to have Father Murphy return to ministry with the deaf community. There is no indication that Archbishop Weakland foresees any other measures to be taken in the case.

17 July 1996

More than 20 years after the original abuse allegations, Archbishop Weakland writes to Cardinal Ratzinger, claiming that he has only just discovered that Father Murphy’s sexual abuse involved the sacrament of confession — a still more serious canonical crime. The allegations about the abuse of the sacrament of confession were in the original 1974 allegations. Weakland has been archbishop of Milwaukee by this point for 19 years.

It should be noted that for sexual-abuse charges, Archbishop Weakland could have proceeded against Father Murphy at any time. The matter of solicitation in the sacrament of confession required notifying Rome, but that too could have been done as early as the 1970s.

10 September 1996

Father Murphy is notified that a canonical trial will proceed against him. Until 2001, the local bishop had authority to proceed in such trials. The Archdiocese of Milwaukee is now beginning the trial. It is noteworthy that at this point, no reply has been received from Rome indicating that Archbishop Weakland knew he had that authority to proceed.

24 March 1997

Archbishop Tarcisio Bertone, Cardinal Ratzinger’s deputy at the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, advises a canonical trial against Father Murphy.

14 May 1997

Archbishop Weakland writes to Archbishop Bertone to say that the penal process against Father Murphy has been launched, and notes that the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith has advised him to proceed even though the statute of limitations has expired. In fact, there is no statute of limitations for solicitation in the sacrament of confession.

Throughout the rest of 1997 the preparatory phases of penal process or canonical trial is underway. On 5 January 1998 the Tribunal of the Archdiocese of Milwaukee says that an expedited trial should be concluded within a few months.

12 January 1998

Father Murphy, now less than eight months away from his death, appeals to Cardinal Ratzinger that, given his frail health, he be allowed to live out his days in peace.

6 April 1998

Archbishop Bertone, noting the frail health of Father Murphy and that there have been no new charges in almost 25 years, recommends using pastoral measures to ensure Father Murphy has no ministry, but without the full burden of a penal process. It is only a suggestion, as the local bishop retains control.

13 May 1998

The Bishop of Superior, where the process has been transferred to and where Father Murphy has lived since 1974, rejects the suggestion for pastoral measures. Formal pre-trial proceedings begin on 15 May 1998, continuing the process already begun with the notification that had been issued in September 1996.

30 May 1998

Archbishop Weakland, who is in Rome, meets with officials at the Congregation of the Doctrine of the Faith, including Archbishop Bertone but not including Cardinal Ratzinger, to discuss the case. The penal process is ongoing. No decision taken to stop it, but given the difficulties of a trial after 25 years, other options are explored that would more quickly remove Father Murphy from ministry.

19 August 1998

Archbishop Weakland writes that he has halted the canonical trial and penal process against Father Murphy and has immediately begun the process to remove him from ministry — a quicker option.

21 August 1998

Father Murphy dies. His family defies the orders of Archbishop Weakland for a discreet funeral

— Father Raymond J. de Souza is a chaplain at Queen’s University in Ontario.

***

GJ - I just want to remind readers about the incompetent leadership of WLC. They not only picked Weakland and his priests to lecture at their school, they also picked the worst possible leader in the Church of Rome and heavily advertised their public lectures.

And they lied about it, calling it a "private luncheon," as if that honker of a coverup made any sense.

The only justification for inviting Weakland was that he was just as evil as WELS in covering up criminal activity. ("Never happened" - Tabor, Just, Zerbe, etc - WELS) Perhaps that is what they admired so much about Weakland.

---

Another comment on the Net:

"What baffles me is why Weakland is made to look like he's some kind of hero for asking Rome to defrock Fr. Murphy. Weakland was my archbishop and I loath the man. He took our donations and paid off an extortionist (his gay lover who threatened to make his affairs public) without telling us about it. Weakland hid news of pedophilia in the diocese, he took extremely liberal stances on issues and hinted that abortion might be ok. Once he was replaced, he has refused to just "go away" and be quiet. He befriended some woman from the New York Times who has written sympathetic articles about him and has written a book about his life and affairs. Ugh, please be quiet is all I can ask of this guy."

Wisconsin's Little College: Jobs Bill at Work

Leonard Sweet-heart Paul Kelm teaches secrets of staying young.

25 March 2010
Second campus pastor

Willowcreek Liberal Wisconsin Lutheran College welcomes back Pastor Paul Kelm, who recently accepted a call to serve as the second campus pastor alongside Pastor Nathan Strobel. Kelm previously served the college from 1979-1984 and 1993-1998.

Pastor Kelm spoke during today’s chapel service, following the week’s theme of The Lord’s Supper.

***

GJ - Kelm is in charge of organizing Pietistic cell groups and contemptuous worship services, both very popular with aging Boomers. The WLC board serves Geritol during its breaks.

Feel the buzz? Enthusiasm at work.

WLC - Wisconsin's Little College - News

Mark Braun is infamous for promoting the Fuller Seminary (Reformed) concept of "soil testing."
Not every Lutheran is convinced.
Some actually read Matthew 13.

Paul Calvin Kelm

1. Kelm will be responsible for and take over the Sunday night praise services at the college. Strobel has been leading the contemptuous worship services. Kelm, who has worked with Ski, will take it much farther into Schwaermerland.

2. Kelm will hold small-group Bible studies, focusing on "Christian Leadership" or "servant leadership," with the goal of eventually helping student leaders to hold their own Bible studies. Will women teach men? They already do in WELS.

3. Kelm will start being Number Two in mid-March. He turned 65 in December. His house is up for sale in Green Bay, so he plans to stay in Milwaukee.

WLC is the synod's center for apostasy. They used to be ahead of the Sausage Factory, but Mequon has gone over completely to Fullerism. Ditto MLC. If the synodical higher education system cannot teach Lutheran doctrine, they ought to sell the campuses to some of the for-profit online schools.

The two most famous lecturers at WLC have been Martin Marty of ELCA, long ago denounced by WELS, and Archbishop R. Weakland, the Roman leader known for his homosexual affair covered over with hush money stolen from church funds. Actually, Weakland followed the WELS playbook quite well, so that is probably why they sought him out and paid him to be a featured speaker.

WELS Shrinkers are featured in FIC. WELS felons are never named.

Archbishop Weakland is grateful.

Close the Two WELS Colleges:
They Are Seminex Reborn

Instead of: Pueri pueri erunt (boys will be boys).
Pueri puellae erunt (boys will be girls - video).
Puellae pueri erunt (girls will be boys - pastors).

The Wisconsin Synod should stop wasting its money on Wisconsin Lutheran College and Martin Luther College. Both schools should be cut loose from all funding and synodical affiliation, with the few good faculty and students moved to Bethany in Mankato.

I am not the biggest fan of Bethany, but the other two make it look like a bastion of orthodoxy in comparison. Perhaps Bethany would not want to be tainted with an influx of WELSians.

Reposting the Withdrawn MLC Video
WLC and MLC think the gay video is just great. In fact, the entire WELS school system is supporting the video with a fan page on Facebook. At this moment, the page has 1,059 fans, drawn from the WELS schools, prep and area Lutheran high schools included. Others join, so they can see how hip the Wisconsin Synod is.

The fan page has linked the Martin Luther College video and the original Fire Island Pines version.

Neither school has shown the slightest interest in discipline, so WELS is supposed to be straight on the outside and gay on the inside. Are the WELS leaders uncomfortable with Martin Luther College on the title of the video and the fan page? Parents? The college will not budge, so why not drop the school entirely?

ELCA is more honest - and falling apart at the seems. That is, seems everyone is heading out the door, as fast as possible. What makes people think WELS is different? ELCA tiptoed around the tulips for some time, but finally came down on the predestined side of apostasy.

Brassier Than the Anglicans
The Episcopal Church began with some illegal women's ordinations - the women were legal but the ordinations not. Consternation! Abomination! They studied it for a long time and found it a blessing, but women could not be bishops. Oh no. That changed with their first woman Suffragen (assistant) Bishop. Purdy soon they had women bishops. Finally The Most Rev. Dr. Katharine Jefferts Schori's mannish hands grasped the crosier with righteous wrath, vowing to make her church into HerChurch, a place for equal opportunity for everyone except straight white males.

And your little dog too!

WELS is brassier than the Episcopal Church because the synod has not bothered to ordain women. No need. They created Women Staff Ministers (no objections)and a College of Ministry (a few bleats from the Little Sect). MLC is the College of Ministry and Ballet Dancing.

They encouraged these Women Staff Ministers to consecrate Holy Communion and distribute them to the shut-ins. The Lord knows the WELS pastors were too busy planning growth to visit their own members with Holy Communion.

The ELS squeaked and WELS graciously imposed a moratorium - WELS-Latin for "We will get this going later. Wink. Wink."

But lo, that was not enough. The Latte Church set up their own Lady Pastor who "administers the Means of Grace" under the watchful eye of the Circuit Pussycat and Doctrinal Pussycat. She is not even certified as Woman Staff Minister. She was hired behind the back of the local clergy, which was unbrotherly, if not unsisterly.

But lo, even that was not enough. Mary Lou College made the Lady Pastor a special guest their Evangelism Church and Change Day.

Issues Define ELCA
Most would say that three or more issues define ELCA:
1. Women serving as pastors.
2. Homosexuality.
3. Unionism with Rome and with the Reformed.

Both colleges meet these criteria as ELCA schools. Put them up on eBay.

If you ever wondered what Israel was like when the prophets had to hide in caves, looking at that Facebook page with its members gives you an idea. Even the religious class was hopelessly mired in immorality.

I thought the morality of the WELS schools was bad when I went there, but apparently it has continued its slide so WELS members are only slightly better than mainstream, which isn't very good in this day and age. At least they aren't rappin' and hiphopping while using foul language and misogynistic slurs.

***

GJ - They proudly list their Lutheran schools. The worst German adjective is "shameless" and these fans hardly know what that means.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Close the Two WELS Colleges: They Are Seminex Rebo...":

Yes, I see that under their mug shots and names, they even list their WELS and Concordia schools. I'm not sure why a future Lutheran educator or pastor would even be interested in his bit of pop culture with its relative morality.

***

GJ - Seminex became the official seminary of the Metropolitan Community Churches, whose founder wrote The Lord Is My Shepherd and He Knows I'm Gay. In breaking with the LCMS, Seminex also began training women pastors.

Good thing your little blog has so much weight on what the synod does. I bet they will cut all funding tomorrow because of your genius blog post.

GJ = Mr. Leyrer - I think your comments alone would be enough to make them pull the plugs. Thanks again for confirming everyone's suspicions about the quality of a WELS education.

mjleyrer has left a new comment on your post "Close the Two WELS Colleges: They Are Seminex Rebo...":

Hey, if I went to a WELS school than maybe you would have a case! Hmmm open mouth insert foot appropriate? I think so.

GJ - Did I say Mr. Leyrer went to or graduated from a WELS college? I think it is highly unlikely that he never attended a WELS educational institution. His reading comprehension skills are almost at Mequon levels. Really. That low! And his self-esteem (which we used to call conceit) is that high. Mequonisch high.

mjleyrer has left a new comment on your post "Close the Two WELS Colleges: They Are Seminex Rebo...":

Well, you weren't advocating closing all the WELS schools were you? No, you weren't. Just the colleges. My point still stands. Hey, you almost got out of it though. Keep trying, maybe someday you'll win.

He served as vice-president of the Seminary from 1985—1996, and as president from 1996—2004. He continued to teach courses in evangelism and the Pastoral Epistles during his presidency. He retired in 2004 and lives in San Marcos, California, with his wife Janice. In his retirement he is serving as chairman of the Humanitarian Aid Committee of the Board for World Missions. The Valleskeys have three married daughters, all of whom have been or are involved in the WELS teaching ministry. They have ten grandchildren. [Fuller trained - denies it, brags about it]

Prof. Phil Leyrer: Prof. Phil Leyrer is a 1980 graduate of Dr. Martin Luther College. Prof. Leyrer has served on the faculties of Kettle Moraine Lutheran High School and Lakeside Lutheran High School and as the Minister of Discipleship at St. Andrew Lutheran Church, Middleton, WI.* In 2000 he came to MLC where he teaches in the English Division and serves in the administration. EMERGING CHURCH, JAY BAKKER AND OUTLAW PREACHERS

Apprising Ministries has been warning you about the Growing Gay Agenda In Evangelicalism; therein you will see heretical theologian Tony Jones, unquestionably a leading spokesman for the sinfully ecumenical Emerging Church de-formation of the Christian faith aka Emergent Church—that’s now morphed into Emergence Christianity (EC)—speak of “a shift” toward full inclusion of GLBTQ people within evangelicalism.
Awhile back in Emerging Church To TransFORM Outlaw Preachers I talked about the EC group TransFORM, a network created by Steve Knight of Emergent Village. As I’ve said before, most all of the familiar names in the EC existential rebellion against the final authority of the Bible are to be found within; and it’s very important for you to realize that the EC has now also embraced a bunch self-described, largely gay-affirming, Outlaw Preachers (OP) who’ve come slithering up all around “pastor” Jay Bakker.

In Meet Outlaw Preachers I brought to your attention that this rather rapscallion bunch of largely biblically illiterate, *cough* group of “preachers” is currently working hard at Turning God’s Grace Into An Idol. OPs include such EC luminaries as Queermergent’s Adele Sakler and self-described “Queer Affirming” ELCA “pastor” Nadia Bolz-Weber, who was recently featured at the EC apostasia-palooza Christianity 21 put on by Jones along with his equally heretical quasi-universalist “pastor” Doug Pagitt.

"ELCA is more honest - and falling apart at the seems...."

"seems"?

Hmmmm.... These are the kind of mistakes for which you crucify others...

***

GJ - The previous remark came from Milwaukee or New Ulm. In both cities, college students are reading Ichabod, their lips moving as they try to sound out the words.

I planted that pun just to catch a humorless Shrinker. Notice the second seems. That unites the thought. They probably do not teach this in the WELS colleges, where English is still a first language, and Latin is unknown. Puns can be based on homonyms, words that sound alike but have different meanings. The Old Testament has a number of puns in Hebrew, but I don't want to make this too deep for the college students.

I'm no Oxford, but I admire his plays. He made up more words than anyone else, had a larger vocabulary than John Milton. He also used puns. Some of you know him as Shakespeare, the son of a glove-maker, but that seams unlikely. There I go again.

I do not remember crucifying anyone over bad grammar, atrocious spelling, and hamfisted sentence structure. To the pure, all things are pure. To the illiterate, all things are just doggone confusing.

Paul Kelm Effect: Freddy Finkelstein on Lutheran Colleges

Freddy Finkelstein has left a new comment on your post "Willow Creek Wisconsin Lutheran College Hires Geez...":

Given the growing expense involved with college education, it is prudent for parents to begin planning ahead of time, so I have been planning for my children's college education for some time, now. For what it is worth, even though my children are 8 years, minimum, from college age, WLC has already been ruled out of consideration. At this point, the only Lutheran college under serious consideration is Bethany Lutheran College in Mankato, MN (ELS). I have visited the campuses and spoken with professors and admission counselors at both WLC and BLC, I have met several students and graduates from both colleges, including students of WLC from my own congregation, and I am far more impressed with Bethany at this point, both academically and confessionally speaking. I am particularly impressed with the Confessional activism of some Bethany professors -- the involvement of some here, being characteristic of those I've met. By comparison, the overt "Schwaermer" activism that proceeds from WLC does not help them, Charis having been one such glaring example of it. These influences do trickle down to the students. In fact, all of the students who have been sent to WLC from our own small congregation in the past six years or so (roughly 30% of our high-school grads), have been lost to these influences, while the students I have met from Bethany seem to be hotly Confessional by comparison. Yes, students, your words and actions represent the primary influences that have shaped you -- your college, high-school, church, family, etc. -- and, based on your words and actions, others rightly form judgments regarding those influences.

Yet, I am not blind to the reality that change is possible. According to my contacts in LCMS, there are two relatively conservative Concordia colleges left, Wisconsin and Irvine, and having spoken with a few Confessional professors from Concordia Wisconsin over the years, and several of their students, I am duly impressed, and am eager to see how the future may shape the reality of Lutheran education in LCMS and elsewhere in America. In the end, if I am going to purchase a specifically Lutheran education for my children, I am not going to be suckered into paying for one that is not calculated to produce, and which does not demonstrably produce, Lutheran confessors. Merely providing an education in a "Lutheran" environment is not sufficient -- that is to pay extra for only an adjective, and for just that I can purchase a positively excellent education at St. Olaf in Northfield, MN. Otherwise, there are many other very fine sources of education available.

So there is my open letter to the WLC Board. I'm not going to waste my time personally engaging fruitless discussion with a group of men whose public decisions demonstrate an undying commitment to CGM and other forms of enthusiasm. Their minds are already made up, the direction their leadership is taking them is evidence of this fact. Instead, I'll point out that WLC is not WELS, per se, but is only affiliated with WELS as an external organization, apparently sharing in a fellowship arrangement with WELS; and I'll suggest that maybe it's time WELS begin independently reconsidering that arrangement -- which would, of course, impact the member congregations of the WLC corporation and prompt them to exert appropriate influence.

I'll vote with my patronage, and encourage others to do the same.

Freddy Finkelstein

+Diet O. Worms has left a new comment on your post "Paul Kelm Effect: Freddy Finkelstein on Lutheran C...":

A few years back, a waitress approached and struck up a conversation after seeing me reading a Bible over lunch. (How's that for efficacy!) Eventually we found that we were both WELS, and that she had just graduated from WLC and was studying further to start a career in substance abuse counseling. GJ - The Reformed emphasis is coming from the WLC board of directors. WLC has been on a unionistic bent for a long time.

Someone asked me today, "Why such a huge board? Is that normal for higher education?" I think the board is huge to give more power to a few people - divide and conquer. Besides, each board member is expected to bring in money or influence. Joe Kennedy (the patriarch) was on the Notre Dame board, but he did not give much money. They threw him off.

Willow Creek Wisconsin Lutheran College Hires Geezer as Second Campus Pastor:
Church and Change Has Its Own College

01/18/10 - WISCONSIN EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN SYNOD - 8:43 am

P A S T O R - C A L L - R E P O R T
01/12/2010 - through - 01/18/2010

Kelm - Paul Calvin, age 65 (DMin, Church Growth, Concordia Seminary, St. Louis) - WLC - Milwaukee WI - 01/12/2010 - Campus Pastor. Resume: recently canned as Perish Services expert, The Love Shack.

Wisconsin Lutheran College (WELS when the mood strikes it) stacked its board of directors with CrossWalk, Phoenix people.

CrossWalk is not even a member of WELS and will not ever be a member of WELS, from what I hear from Phoenix. But CrossWalk is the poster-child for Church and Change: hiding its identity, refusing to have Holy Communion services, relying on entertainment and other gimmicks.

The board put Pastor Jeff Gunn, Church and Change hero, on the board. They hired one of his members to be the new president of the college. They also asked an additional member from CrossWalk to be on the board. Normally a board would not have two members from the same church serving at once, but CrossWalk--lovechild of Willow Creek and Fuller--has three. When I posted this information from the WLC website, they changed the list to hide membership information. Ichabod effect.

Let's face it - Paul Calvin Kelm at age 65 is a geezer. I can say that because I am a geezer at 61. I would never put myself forward as a college campus chaplain at my age. But there is a reason WLC did this - to spite the elected leadership of the Wisconsin Synod.

At first they had only one person on the list for a second pastor - Jeff Gunn, because Gunn was facing unemployment with his funding drying up. Gunn did not get the call, but Ski's pal Buske (Gospel Lighthouse, Drive 09 and who knows what else) did.

The whole idea behind a second pastor is to turn the college into a church, even though the students already have their own WELS memberships. The college said it was specifically to set up more Pietistic cell groups, something Kelm has used to drive his synod into the sub-basement.

The students appreciate their Lutheran heritage, even if Kelm does not. There is little interest in aping the Deformed, which has been the substance of Kelm's entire miserable career.

Some achievements of Paul Calvin Kelm:
  1. His son left WELS for Missouri.
  2. His divorced brother had a Shrinker church in Indianapolis and left WELS for Missouri, with a sweetheart deal where he barely had to show up for classes at St. Louis to pass colloquy.
  3. He earned a drive-by DMin in Church Growth at St. Louis, and fashions himself a "Dr" - even though a DMin is the equivalent of an STM degree, if that. His bud Larry Olson took four courses at Fuller and wrote a paper to get the degree.
  4. He served exactly one parish on his own, a hundred years ago.
  5. His other parish experience was at St. Mark, Depere, where he was also a member of the Willow Creek Ministerium by virtue of the congregation's membership in the Willow Creek Association (broke off - Ichabod effect).
  6. He promoted Deformed theology as editor of TELL, leveraging his influence in false doctrine as head of Evangelism for WELS.
  7. He had previous posts at WLC. Why did he not stay?
  8. He has been a leader of Church and Change, fighting hard for the Leonard Sweet conference and refusing to answer anyone who objected. For Kelm, Matthew 18 is for suckers. Sweet, a notorious New Ager Methodist, was in fact the lead speaker for WELS Church and Change. Do not complain, WELSians - you funded C and C with your offering money.

If people want their Lutheran children influenced by a man who mocks Lutheran doctrine, they should do nothing. They having been doing nothing for 30 years, so they are good at that.

If they want something different, they should write to the WLC board and Synod President Schroeder.

And this has what to do with Paul? Oh, absolutely nothing? That's what I thought. Holding Paul accountable for what his brother does is just asinine.

GJ - Is that your dad on the WLC board? I think you should talk to him about doctrinal problems there. WLC seems to like every denomination except WELS. They had Martin Marty (ELCA) lecture there. They hosted the homosexual, corrupt Archbishop Weakland and his priests for a series of public lectures (and lied about it).

Blood is thicker than doctrine in WELS. That is why I mentioned Dan Kelm. The ELS hissed and mewed about Dan but did nothing. I posted the gushing story about his church in Christian News.

Sorry to see you have to use word verification now. Why the change?

Did some Church shrinkers nail you with a spambot?

I've always thought the current WLC Campus Pastor was a naive but conservative guy. I'm sad to see this evidence of the opposite.

What's your opinion? Do you think (as I do) that he had to have been involved in the decision to call Kelm?

***

GJ - Spam comments have increased, so I put in word identification. I do not blame the Schtinkers for that. They are too dumb to lock down security on Facebook, so I doubt whether they are running spambots. They have trouble with English, so I think code is beyond them. Besides, they want to destroy churches and souls, not computers.

I do not know too much about WLC. There are genuine Lutheran students and faculty there, but the board is pure Schwaermer. They have been behaving like ELCA wannabees for some time. ELCA has a lot of colleges already. They do not need another.

Rich Gurgle's son was posting in a similar vain.

Professor Leyrer's press agent, mjleyrer, has left a new comment on your post "Willow Creek Wisconsin Lutheran College Hires Geez...":

Maybe it could be [GJ - redundant] that WLC added a second campus pastor because they [GJ - plural pronoun for singular subject] wanted to increase chapel attendance and increase a Christian atmosphere on the campus [GJ - Everyone is a WELS member. OK, maybe you have a point there]. I know a lot of people that go there and I know that chapel is poorly attended [GJ - needs rewording, awkward and verbose]. I think it was a good idea to add a second chaplain. [GJ - That settles the question.]

I don't get why you complain about EVERYTHING Jacko. You don't change anything, your words fall on def ears and it's not like you would ever set foot on the campus anyway. [GJ - Run-on sentence] You're like the kid who colors on the wall to get attention. [GJ - What do you call a semi-educated youngster who posts comments almost daily?]

Believe it or not, the people that you disagree with are still saved, they are still going to heaven and they still have faith in Christ. [GJ - Run-on sentence. Everyone is forgiven - except me.] They have the one thing needful. You're not doing anything for anyone. [GJ - I have provided a platform for bloggers who cannot get an audience, so they try to hijack this one.]

***

GJ - That was amusing. I did not find a direct response to my question - "Isn't your father on the board at WLC?"

Evasion is a common tactic among the Shrinkers in WELS. Ask a direct question and they will launch their feeble personal attacks.

If I were his father and serving on the board of WLC, I would quote Nathan Lane in The Producers - "Don't help me."

I am glad someone is willing to draw attention to this latest travesty. I see a replay of the last drama, where SP Schroeder advised Perish Services not to call someone. When they insisted, he advised them not to call a polarizing figure. Bruce Becker, who soon took off for Jeske-land, had Paul Calvin Kelm hired. The call was kept a secret, even though the Love Shack is not a big building. The insubordinate Becker let the Synod President read the news when everyone else did - in the Monday Call Report. I told a friend that WELS was the only synod where the call report was dramatic.

The Chicaneries began lying about their deceit - a double-whammy from the Schtinkers. They claimed Schroeder knew, calling their own elected leader a liar. I love it when cowards do something like that. I double-checked with several sources and found (no surprise) that Becker did keep it a secret.

I wonder if Professor Leyrer's press agent could answer this question - "Did the WLC board hear similar advice - not to call a second pastor? And did they keep this call a secret from the Synod President?"

Gunn and Hunter on the Short List for Second Pastor at WLC

Jeff Gunn is still the No. 1 pick for the second pastor, WLC.
He is on the board and losing his job in Phoenix.

Randy Hunter is another candidate for running WLC's cell groups.

The students and faculty are already WELS members--not necessarily Lutheran, if you get my drift. Boss man wants to treat the campus like his own church. Like Wayne Mueller, the more people hired, the better for lobbying.

Jeff Gunn's stealth sect is not going to be accepted by his own district, so he is looking for a new soapbox.

The issue is not whether students live there in dorms. I love the way some people turn a doctrinal discussion into something else. Clearly the school wants to build a base of unionistic Pietism while asking Lutherans to study and work there.

There are plenty of fine Pietistic schools around Milwaukee. Why build up another one in the stealth mode?

In other news, my post about Mark and Avoid Jeske was prescient. Stay tuned.

Wisconsin Lutheran College, Liturgy, and Emmanuel

Whenever God builds a chapel, Satan builds a cathedral nearby (reversing Luther's order - these are the End Times).

dk has left a new comment on your post "Is "Our Valpo" A Congregation? - Ripped from the P...":

I'm curious, professor, what you would say about a Pastor who used contemporary Christian music in a chapel service but who used the Book of Concord exclusively as the material for the service and sermon. (assuming that the CCM had words that were Orthodx. Say, like a Luther hymn set to rock music)

You and I personally might despise the music and call it "Whoopee worship", but I don't think there's any legitimate Scriptural/Confessional criticism for such an arrangement. Sadly many of your readers would condemn that hypothetical pastor as if he were teaching false doctrine (without even hearing what he had to say).

The only criticism that would be possible is accusing the hypothetical Pastor of pandering to populism, making worship 'entertainment' rather than worship.

This argument is valid, but it's valid for both sides of the equation. Just as many folks who end up in churches of your preferred flavor do so because of the style and feel. And there are just as many "High Churches" that teach dreck as there are Happy-Clappies. Both sides, Liturgicals and happy clappies, are just operating on their preferred set of cultural memes--not actually drawing on Biblical commands. But if the doctrine is correct, you cannot say a thing.

That being said, I don't think you should criticize Pastor Strobel in the way that you did. I'm not implying that he's teaching the Lutheran Confessions in his Contemporary services. I think not. But I happen to know that he's the kind of person who'd be very interested in hearing that suggestion. Yes, I know that CCM is the smoke of the Enthusiastic fire, but real Confessional Lutherans also need to distance themselves from the idiots who claim that the Western Rite is the only proper way to worship. Your bland criticism of any and all CCM gives the Liturgical Nazis confidence in their misunderstanding. (and a righteously stiff and austere upper lip)

This ain't some generic cry "8th commandment, 8th commandment". I don't think you have or do break it.

It's just a credibility issue.

***

GJ - I was not nominated to the WLC board, so I know little about what goes on there. It would be good for them to have some outside directors. I could be the token Lutheran.

DK misses the point of Contemporary Charismatic Music. The model is entertainment and sentimentality. The Lutherans are aping the Pentecostals with their Seeker Services. Willow Creek may be the training ground, but the Pentecostals are the gold lead standard - an amateur hour fanning hopes for a real music career. Is it an accident that Elvis began by singing in a Pentecostal church? That many Black singers were first church soloists?

"Blended worship" is a bigger farce. The only point of blended worship is to move members by baby-steps into rock services. It takes time for the Shrinkers to do this, but their Father Below is patient. Look at how long it took to bring down the Lutherans.

My question about WLC was this - why is the campus considered a congregation? The honest answer may be this - they want to use the school to train students in apostasy (marketed as cutting edge spirituality). They are local students, are they not? Why would the school be a second church for them, unless more was planned? The agenda was given away in the article. They want to promote cell groups - Pietism. Milwaukee is loaded with WELS Shrinkers. They could volunteer their time to develop conventicles. But wait - the Shrinkers only work for the big bucks. Forget that.

Foundation grants are drying up. Thrivent ain't thriving. Poverty could save the Lutheran Church from the Shrinkers.

TR asked about Emmanuel versus Immanual. For some perverse reason, the Hebrew is transliterated several ways. The m's vary too, whether the name starts with an E or an I.

English is fairly consistent but not with this word.

GJ:

DK,  I know people who worship worship - so high church they would chant the announcements if they could. They are often the same people who turn tail and run away from doctrinal discernment. But the liturgy and creeds and historic lessons preserved the Faith during those awful periods of German Pietism, Unionism, and Rationalism. The apostates today want to take away the last barriers to their program, because the Word of God does stand in their way.

Given the odious choice, between a high church apostate and a Church Growth apostate, I would worship high church, smells and bells, rather than rock and roll with Cousin Brunhilda.

Is "Carry On Wayward Son" appropriate during the Collects?(This happened at an LCMS church)

An accustic guitar with the organ is fine if using traditional hymns.
The harp, trumpet, or string instrument are also traditional.

Come on now, Christian Rock Bands?
In "Here I Stand", Roland Bainton discusses this. I will find the page later, unless, Pastor GJ wishes to post it sooner.

For the record, GJ is not against using another traditional instrument.

I'm quite sure JK would like to provide some comments.

GJ - Quoted by Marquart at a forum, on Easter Sunday, three chapagne bottles (Dom Patterson Perignon?) were on the altar.  "Christ is risen." Pop went the first cork. "He is risen indeed." Repeated two more times. I don't know if it was at St. John Ellisville, but that is certainly their style.

Is "Our Valpo" A Congregation? - Ripped from the Pages of The Thword

Roman Catholic Archbishop Weakland paid about $400,000 hush money to his boyfriend, but WLC hired him and some his priests as special speakers for a series of public lectures. WLC's damage control team tried to make this a "private luncheon," something too hilarious to refute.

Call WELS headquarters at 414-256-3888 if you do not want more of the same. Or write a letter to: Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS)
2929 N Mayfair Road, Milwaukee, WI 53222.

Read Charlie Chaplain.

"WLC to call a second campus pastor." Some brief highlights:

"Now, WLC has grown to the equivalent of a congregation of 850 people. Strobel [the current campus pastor] commented that because of this development, 'the WLC student body is becoming hungry for spiritual growth,' and he is struggling trying to meet the spiritual needs of WLC."

"He feels that there is much more that he and his staff should be doing to serve the students, especially small group Bible studies."

***

GJ - They tried to rescue Jeff Gunn from his failing non-WELS congregation, but that was nixed.

Apparently the students are so spiritually starved from their own congregations that they need cell groups to tide them over during the week.

Should WLC determine if they are Lutheran before adding insult to injury? They started Church and Change through Charis. They tried a Werning/Hunter seminar, which was canceled amid great pouting by its leaders. They had ELCA theologian Martin Marty speak at the campus. Are they Roman Catholic, Babto-Pentecostal CG, or High Church Unitarian (ELCA)?

Martin Marty and his voodoo doll,
actually part of a long-running joke.

Anonymous has left a new comment on your post "Is "Our Valpo" A Congregation? - Ripped from the P...":

You just read whatever you want into anything you want, don't you Mr. Jackson?

If a college is growing, do they not need more physical and intellectual resources, such as classroom space and faculty?

Why would a growing institution such as WLC not need more spiritual resources as well?

"Apparently the students are so spiritually starved from their own congregations that they need cell groups to tide them over during the week."

You may be the first pastor I have seen that frowns upon Christians spending time with the Lord and with each other outside the confines of their own congregations.

---

GJ - I am a pastor? The Chicaneries are always telling me I am not. In fact, this anonymous, brave soul addressed his message "Mr. Jackson." I get a chuckle from people changing titles when they disagree with my Biblical, Confessional posts. One wit favored "pastorless," which means "without a pastor." Am I without a pastor? In fact, I have a number of friends who are pastors, and I value their judgment.

This story illustrates what another person observed, that bureaucrats grow their kingdoms, not by being more productive, but by building layers under them. The current campus pastor already has a staff, and now he needs an assistant to generate more cell groups. Wayne Mueller did the same thing, building up a core of loyal and obedient Shrinkers who marched to the mike at every convention and voted for additional loyal and obedient staffers.

Wisconsin Lutheran College (Brigadoon WELS, joining the synod during fund drives, then disappearing again) needs more Lutheran staff. WLC needs to boot the Chicaneries from the board. I am sure the new prez is a fine fellow, but he should head up a Babtist school since he came from Jeff Gunn's CrossWalk.

The rumor I heard is that the current campus pastor cannot get any interest going in his bee-bop whoopee services. Would another attendant at the beehive help? They should try a high church (for WELS) pastor, someone edified and inspired by the Book of Concord. College students favor real worship services, so WLC should be cutting edge with the liturgy, creeds, Gerhardt hymns, Luther, Chemnitz, Gerhardt, Jacobs, Krauth.

There are many reasons why WLC is called "Our Valpo."

Critics Pan Adam Lambert's Witty Parody: Adam Raises Cain

Student Advisor, The Sword

Readers probably do not want to see the NY Post article, but here it is.

Adam defended his performance recorded on the video, “If it’s edited, that’s discrimination,” Adam said. “I will be a little disappointed because there is a little bit of discrimination going in this country. There’s a big double standard, female pop artists have been doing things provocative like that for years, and the fact that I’m a male, and I’ll be edited and discriminated against could be a problem.”

Wisconsin Lutheran College's prestigious student newspaper, The Sword, editorialized that critics missed the point of Adam Lambert's cutting edge performance at the American Music Awards. Denouncing humorous critics who cannot understand a a clever parody, The Sword went on to state:

Repression and censorship have made it difficult but not impossible for us to watch our favorite video. Lucky for us, someone put it on a server so we can watch through a "dark tunnel," as they call it. Far from putting people off, it has done wonders for recruitment at two schools. Before we got very few future fashion designers, ballet dancers, gossip columnists, and flower arrangers. Now they are swarming both campuses.

Among we journalists, parody is an essential art form. You take the essence of a performance and make people smile by taking it to a new level. A truly awesome performance will make people laugh, especially when they imagine the shocked frowns of troglodytes blogging in their pajamas. If I was him, I would download more of the same. Parody is art. This here newspaper itself is a parody of student journalism, an art form.
