Legendary television actor Andy Griffith dead at 86, reports say | Fox News:

Legendary television actor Andy Griffith, who made a name for himself with his self-titled comedy "The Andy Griffith Show" and later on the long-running series “Matlock,” has died at the age of 86, according to multiple reports.

Griffith was rushed to a North Carolina hospital by an EMS team after they were called to his Roanoke home Tuesday morning. The actor’s close friend, former UNC President Bill Friday, confirmed the news to several sources, including TMZ and a local NBC affiliate.

The details surrounding the cause of his death were not immediately available.

Griffith first gained prominence in Hollywood after appearing in the Elia Kazan film “A Face in the Crowd.”
In 1960, he played the lead character in “The Andy Griffith Show,”  where he became a household name and a staple of American television. The show ran until 1968.

In 1986, he returned to television with the long-running series, “Matlock.”

He was later awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President George Bush.

The article forgets to mention that Andy Griffith became quite popular as the lead actor in the live TV teleplay "No Time for Sergeants". It was later made into a feature film in which he was not a part of. Some of us Ichabodians are old enough to remember when there was much more live television than just the news.

LOLCat Demonstrating Epic Fail

Hmmmm.. 4 congregations nearby with 1,000+ members; 40 congregations total within 20 miles. Does the CORE think that saturation is an EPIC FAIL for WELS? Let's also look at how many "electric slide, jump-n-shout, rock 'n roll" churches are also within 10 miles of CORE. Two huge churches right on 41 - Pathways, Appleton Alliance, dozens of Baptists, Assembly of God, plus lesser enthsiasts (sic)...

Is the CORE concerned that churches aren't reaching people or the Word isn't working and is returning empty and failing to accomplish what God desires?

Here's a quote from Appleton Alliance website: "At Appleton Alliance Church we practice “believer’s baptism”. Baptism not necessary for salvation, but rather is an outward sign of commitment and a changed life. Baptism takes place after a person believes in Jesus Christ and surrenders to Him as lord."

The Senior Editor of the Book of Concord, Martin Chemnitz -
On Justification

"But when we are speaking of the subject itself, it is certain that the doctrine of gracious reconciliation, of the remission of sins, of righteousness, salvation, and eternal life through faith for the sake of the Mediator is one and the same in the Old and in the New Testament. This is a useful rule which we must retain at all costs: The doctrine, wherever we read it, in either the Old or New Testament, which deals with the gracious reconciliation and the remission of sins through faith for the sake of God's mercy in Christ, is the Gospel." Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 459.

"If anyone says that justifying faith is nothing else than trust in divine mercy, which remits sins for Christ's sake, or that it is this trust alone by which we are justified, let him be anathema [damned to Hell]." [Session Six, Canon XII]
Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 460.

"The Scholastics philosophize all too crassly about man doing what is in him, about adequate merit (de merito congrui), about grace which makes acceptable, about deserving merit (de merito condigni). And concerning justification they dispute without the Scripture in no other way than as if they were philosophizing in the school of Aristotle about natural impulses."
Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 463. see Baker, Fundamentals, III, p. 78

"For the papalists understand the word 'justify' according to the manner of the Latin composition as meaning 'to make righteous' through a donated or infused quality of inherent righteousness, from which works of righteousness proceed. The Lutherans, however, accept the word 'justify' in the Hebrew manner of speaking; therefore they define justification as the absolution from sins, or the remission of sins, through imputation of the righteousness of Christ, through adoption and inheritance of eternal life, and that only for the sake of Christ, who is apprehended by faith." Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 467.

"Therefore God, 'who is rich in mercy' [Ephesians 2:4], has had mercy upon us and has set forth a propitiation through faith in the blood of Christ, and those who flee as suppliants to this throne of grace He absolves from the comprehensive sentence of condemnation, and by the imputation of the righteousness of His Son, which they grasp in faith, He pronounces them righteous, receives them into grace, and adjudges them to be heirs of eternal life. This is certainly the judicial meaning of the word 'justification,' in almost the same way that a guilty man who has been sentenced before the bar of justice is acquitted."
Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 482. Ephesians 2:4

"Yet these exercises of faith always presuppose, as their foundation, that God is reconciled by faith, and to this they are always led back, so that faith may be certain and the promise sure in regard to these other objects. This explanation is confirmed by the brilliant statement of Paul in 2 Corinthians 1:20: 'All the promises of God in Christ are yea and amen, to the glory of God through us,' that is, the promises concerning other objects of faith have only then been ratified for us when by faith in Christ we are reconciled with God. The promises have been made valid on the condition that they must give glory to God through us."
Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 495. 2 Corinthians 1:20

"Therefore this apprehension or acceptance or application of the promise of grace is the formal cause or principle of justifying faith, according to the language of Scripture."
Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 502.

"We must note the foundations. For we are justified by faith, not because it is so firm, robust, and perfect a virtue, but because of the object on which it lays hold, namely Christ, who is the Mediator in the promise of grace. Therefore when faith does not err in its object, but lays hold on that true object, although with a weak faith, or at least tries and wants to lay hold on Christ, then there is true faith, and it justifies. The reason for this is demonstrated in those lovely statements in Philippians 3:12: 'I apprehend, or rather I am apprehended by Christ' and Galatians 4:9: 'You have known God, or rather have been known by God.' Scripture shows a beautiful example of this in Mark 9:24: 'I believe; help my unbelief.'"
Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 503. Philippians 3:12; Galatians 4:9; Mark 9:24

"For we are not justified because of our faith (propter fidem), in the sense of faith being a virtue or good work on our part. Thus we pray, as did the man in Mark 9:24: 'I believe, Lord; help my unbelief'; and with the apostles: 'Lord, increase our faith,' Luke 17:5."
Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 506 Mark 9:24; Luke 17:5

"But because not doubt but faith justifies, and not he who doubts but he who believes has eternal life, therefore faith teaches the free promise, which relies on the mercy of God for the sake of the sacrifice of the Son, the Mediator, and not on our works, as Paul says in Romans 4:16: 'Therefore it is of faith, that the promise might be sure according to grace.'"
Martin Chemnitz, Loci Theologici, 2 vols., trans. J. A. O. Preus, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1989, II, p. 507. Romans 4:16

"And, in short, the meritum condigni is the Helen for which the Tridentine chapter concerning the growth of justification contends. For they imagine that the quality, or habit, of love is infused not that we may possess salvation to life eternal through this first grace but that, assisted by that grace, we may be able to merit eternal life for ourselves by our own good works. For concerning the meritum condigni Gabriel speaks thus: 'The soul shaped by grace worthily (de condigno) merits eternal life.'" [Kramer note - Scholastics taught that the good works of the unregenerate had only meritum congrui; the good works of the regenerate rewarded as meritum condigni, merit worthy with being rewarded with eternal life.]
Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 541. see Baker, Fundamentals, III, p. 78

"If anyone says that a man is absolved from sins and justified because of this that he confidently believes that he is absolved and justified, or that no one is truly justified except he who believes that he is justified, and that through this faith alone absolution and justification is effected, let him be anathema [damned to Hell]." [Sixth Session, Canon XIV]
Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 551.

"For we do not approve the opinion of the Marcionite Apelles, who, in Eusebius, argues that it does no harm if someone either simply does not believe or corruptly believes the other parts of the Word of God which belong to the foundation, so long as he believes in Christ crucified."
Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 567.

"Faith means to give assent to the whole Word of God that is set before us, and in it to the promise of the gratuitous reconciliation bestowed for the sake of Christ the Mediator." Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 567.

"If anyone says that Christ Jesus was given to men by God as a redeemer in whom they should believe, and not also as a lawgiver whom they should obey, let him be anathema [damned to Hell]."
Martin Chemnitz, Examination of the Council of Trent, trans., Fred Kramer, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1971, I, p. 617.

"Thus when we say that we are justified by faith, we are saying nothing else than that for the sake of the Son of God we receive remission of sins and are accounted as righteous. And because it is necessary that this benefit be taken hold of, this is said to be done 'by faith,' that is, by trust in the mercy promised us for the sake of Christ. Thus we must also understand the correlative expression, 'We are righteous by faith,' that is, through the mercy of God for the sake of His Son we are righteous or accepted." The Concordis Cyclopedia Condemned the Essence of UOJ.
WELS, Missouri, and the ELS Are Heretical Sects

Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel has left a new comment on your post "UOJ Is Not All Grace But All Works. Why WELS, ELS,...":

The universal objective justification diehards will pervert the grace of God. They have a big problem dealing with Ephesians 2:8-9. Part and parcel of their perversion is to accuse others of limiting the Atonement of Christ when they themselves limit the grace of God by not connecting His grace with the Holy Spirit's actions of creating and sustaining faith.

Instead, they desire a cheap grace that is all packaged up in the once for all sacrifice of Christ. They can't see God's grace in the Holy Spirit's action of bringing the soul to faith. [Titus 3:5 ; John 3:3-8 ; 1 Cor. 6:11]

These universalism enthusiasts don't want to admit that the Holy Spirit creates faith in whom He may. To them that is at odds with their brand of universalism teaching and preaching of forgiveness for all without being born from above by the Holy Spirit. [John 3:3-8]

When is the last time you talked with an objective justification universalist and heard him credit the Holy Spirit for His full work? It won’t happen, because they only ascribe grace with Christ and none to the Holy Spirit and His gracious work.

Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel has left a new comment on your post "UOJ Is Not All Grace But All Works. Why WELS, ELS,...":

I further think that while universal objective justification enthusiasts falsely accuse their opponents of limiting the Atonement, they, at the same time don't want to admit that the Holy Spirit (working with the Word) would create faith in whom He may. They can't stand the thought of some souls not coming into their come one / come all, universalist heaven. By so doing so, these universalists deny the reality of God's free moral agency gift, which is exercised by human souls to their own (soul's) eternal destruction.

Pastor Bickel,

This is an accurate assessment of those who cannot accept the fact that the Holy Spirit works only through the Means of Grace. When you point out to them that all of their efforts and programs, by themselves, will not make one believer, their response is "yeah, but .....". Without even thinking about it, they have become small m methodists. They scratch their heads wondering why the pews are not full every Sunday when the Devil's tent next door (Luther's quote) is bursting at the seams.

Their improper use of the Law becomes a treadmill for them. They are blinded to the notion that all of their planning and effort is an exercise in futility. Yet they still clamor for Law based solutions as they attempt to grow the visible church.

Pope taps German theologian to head orthodoxy post
By NICOLE WINFIELD | Associated Press – 37 mins ago

VATICAN CITY (AP) — The pope named Bishop Gerhard Ludwig Mueller to head the Vatican's all-important orthodoxy office Monday, tapping a German theologian like himself to head the congregation he presided over for nearly a quarter-century enforcing Catholic doctrine.

The 64-year-old Regensburg bishop replaces American Cardinal William Levada, who turned 76 last month and is retiring after seven years at the helm of the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith, the former Holy Office.

While Mueller is considered a conservative theologian — he has penned some 400 academic articles and founded an institute to publish all the pope's writings — some of his less-than-orthodox positions have raised eyebrows in Rome and abroad among staunch conservatives.

Chief among them is his friendship with the Rev. Gustavo Gutierrez, the Peruvian priest considered the founder of liberation theology, the Marxist-influenced one advocating for the poor.

The former Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger, now Pope Benedict XVI, spent much of his tenure at the congregation battling liberation theology, arguing that it misinterpreted Jesus' preference for the poor into a call for rebellion.

Mueller was a student of Gutierrez, wrote a book with him on liberation theology in 2004, and in 2008 was given an honorary degree at the Pontifical University of Lima, where he gave a speech entitled "My experiences with Liberation Theology."

In the speech, though, he stressed that Gutierrez's liberation theology wasn't a political call to revolution, but rather was perfectly in line with the church's social teaching about the poor. It's a distinction he repeated in December in an article in the Vatican newspaper in which he noted that Benedict himself has said not all aspects of liberation theology were problematic.

Yet Mueller has also raised alarm bells among the church's more conservative, traditionalist wings for his outreach work with other Christians. He has served on several ecumenical committees, including being named the chief Catholic negotiator in theological talks with Lutherans.

In addition to handling clerical sex abuse cases, the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith is responsible for negotiating with a breakaway group of traditionalist Catholics, the Society of St. Pius X, which split from Rome over the liberalizing reforms of the 1962-65 Second Vatican Council.

Mueller has spoken out against the society, including a 2009 interview with the German news website Zeit Online in which he said the society's four bishops should resign, keep quiet and "lead an exemplary life as simple priests to repair a part of the damage the schism has caused."

Benedict has made many concessions to try to reconcile with the society, and just last month he offered its members a special legal status within the church, if they were to come into full communion with Rome. But the superior, Bishop Bernard Fellay, has said more talks are needed and that things were at a "dead end."

Naming Mueller as lead negotiator in reconciliation talks certainly can't have come as a welcome development by the society. Yet in a bid to nudge the process forward — and perhaps blunt any negative reaction to a Mueller appointment — Benedict last week tapped a trusted colleague to be the congregation's key No. 2 negotiator.

The appointment of the American Dominican theologian, Monsignor Augustine Di Noia, was accompanied by an unusual statement from the congregation stressing Di Noia's credentials in interpreting Vatican II not as a rupture from the past as liberals believe but as a continuation with the great traditions of Catholicism.
Mueller is a longtime friend of Benedict's and in 2008 founded a diocesan institute, the "Pope Benedict XVI Institute" to publish a 16-volume compilation of the "Collected Writings of Joseph Ratzinger."

Ratzinger attended Mueller's 2002 consecration when he was named bishop of Regensburg, and Mueller hosted the pope during his now-infamous 2006 visit to Regensburg, where Benedict delivered a speech which riled Muslims around the globe. In it, Benedict quoted a 14th-century Byzantine emperor connecting Islam with violence.

At the congregation, Mueller will find a host of unfinished business: In addition to talks with the breakaway traditionalists, he inherits the clerical sex abuse portfolio, which grew exponentially in 2010 with the explosion of cases in Europe, including his native Germany.

The main U.S. victims group, Survivors Network for those Abused by Priests, faulted Mueller for having reinstated a priest who had been convicted for child sex crimes. Mueller has apologized for his handling of the case of the Rev. Peter Kramer, who was convicted in 2000 yet was reinstated in parish work after undergoing therapy.

Mueller also must deal with the congregation's crackdown on the largest group of American nuns, the Leadership Conference for Women Religious, whom the congregation under Levada had accused of straying too far from church doctrine.

Levada, who was brought into the ex-Holy Office in 2005 after Benedict became pope, launched the investigation in 2009 and its findings have embittered many American Catholics against what they perceive as heavy-handed tactics by Rome against U.S. sisters who provide critical health care, education and other services for the poor.

In a statement Monday, the head of the German Bishops Conference, Archbishop Robert Zollitsch, said bishops in the pope's homeland are proud that Mueller would be performing "this important task."
"He is one of the most distinguished theologians of the present time," Zollitsch said, adding that he has led the conference's ecumenical commission for several years "with success and great sensitivity."

We Are Church, a movement that calls for reforms in the church, said Mueller had high-class academic qualifications but that a key question would be whether he has the "necessary intellectual and spiritual caliber" for new thinking — and whether his friendship with Gutierrez might lead to a reevaluation of liberation theology.

Mueller's best-known work is a 900-page tome "Catholic Dogmatics: For the Study and Practice of Theology."

What Is Justifying Faith?

Faith is that my whole heart takes to itself this treasure. It is not my doing, not my presenting or giving, not my work or preparation, but that a heart comforts itself, and is perfectly confident with respect to this, namely, that God makes a present and gift to us, and not we to Him, that He sheds upon us every treasure of grace in Christ.

The Huberites have this to say about the Holy Spirit's faith - the righteousness of Christ.

WELS Siegbert W. Becker:
"Faith does nothing more than accept the forgiveness proclaimed in the Gospel. It is not a condition we must fulfill before we can be forgiven. It is not a cause of forgiveness on account of which God forgives us. The forgiveness comes first. Faith is merely the response to the message. God says to us, “Your sins are forgiven.” This is objective justification, and God’s message to us is true whether we believe it or not. Faith makes God’s message its own and says, “My sins are forgiven.” This is subjective justification. The whole doctrine is just as simple as that." Page 12, The Place of Faith

WELS Our Great Heritage states, "And yet many Lutherans still labor under the delusion that God does not forgive us unless we believe. Instead of seeing faith as nothing more than the spiritual hand with which we make the forgiveness of God our own, they see it as a reason why God forgives us. They believe that Christ has indeed provided forgiveness for all men, that God is willing to forgive them, but before he really forgives he first of all demands that we should be sorry for our sins and that we should have faith. Just have faith they say, and then God will forgive you. All the right words are there. The only thing wrong is that the words are in the wrong order. God does not forgive us IF we have faith. He has forgiven us long ago when he raised his Son from the dead." (p. 59)" WELS MLC President Mark Zarling, "Faith does nothing more than receive the forgiveness which is offered in the Gospel. It is not a condition we fulfill nor is it a cause of forgiveness. We are already forgiven. God's message of justification in Christ is there whether we believe it or not. Faith then receives the blessings." And, "Faith that accepts the good news of universal justification is the work of God the Holy Ghost." Page 7

Learn Luther's Two Catechisms and the Augsburg Confession/Apology -
SynConference Popes Hate Them All

The Complete Augsburg Confession

What Is Justifying Faith? - The Apology - Part 3

That Faith in Christ Justifies - The Apology - Part 4

That We Obtain Forgiveness By Faith Alone in Christ - Part 5 - The Apology

The Augsburg Confession is so concise that each one of the early articles can be placed, complete, on a graphic.

The Apology of the Augsburg Confession is a series of essays on the disputed matters. We can be glad that the papal faction argued against justification by faith, because that gave us Melanchthon's elaborations on the Augsburg Confession.

I have linked the main material on one page and posted a sticky note link on the left column. No excuses now. I realize that we all tend to read whatever is a click away. That is why I took the time to post most of the Book of Concord on this blog.

Every Lutheran, layman or pastor, is obliged to know these confessions and their catechisms - Luther's Small Catechism and Luther's Large Catechism. Both catechisms are really team efforts, with a genuine scoundrel (Agricola) involved as well. Moreover, they are church confessions, not just the publication of one man.

Luther's Large Catechism is condensed from his sermons, so reading the Large Catechism is the best kind of Gospel summary - sermons around the major themes of the Christian faith.

Everyone should pay close attention to Wayne Mueller's attack on the Confessions. The above quotation is the deposit of faith argument of the Roman Catholics. The infallible bishops (DPs) are free to announce any new doctrine they want, because the Holy Spirit will not permit them to err in doctrine.

Even worse, this quotation is more like the Mormon missionary theme. A pair of Mormon missionaries will say, "The Bible is good, but it is like one nail in a piece of wood. The wood still moves around with one nail in it. The Book of Mormon is the second nail that keeps it in place. Then it won't move."

I got the Mormons to say that the Bible 100% true, and they they believe in many gods. Then I said, "Here O Israel, the Lord our God is One God." They became very angry at that point.

Anger and opposition are two clear reactions to the Word of God. The Lutheran leaders who write the same nonsense as Wayne Mueller are worse than false teachers. They are enemies of the Gospel, infatuated with their own notions and drunk with their ecclesiastical power.

Once the second nail is in place, the Bible translation issue is irrelevant. That is because the second nail determines what is believed in the text itself. The constant undercurrent in the SynConference is not faithfulness to the Word and the Confessions but loyalty to Holy Mother Synod's dictates.

The SynConference attitude (found in ELCA, also spawned by Pietism) comes from the cell group leader as guru. In India, the guru is the spiritual leader who has absolute control over his disciples. He can make them do anything. As court testimony shows, Bishop Martin Stephan, STD, taught his female disciples that he owned them body and soul. He expected them to submit to his demands, and they did. His groupies and his clergy disciples (like the Walther brothers) followed him to America. When Stephan was robbed, threatened, deposed, and kidnapped by the Walther mob, the Great Walther took over the guru's role, reigning as the new pope.

The ELS, LCMS, and WELS leaders are true Waltherians. They are not Lutherans.

UOJ Is Not All Grace But All Works.
Why WELS, ELS, and Missouri Are Bi-Sectsual

The Universal Objective Justification advocates would like everyone to believe they are all grace. Ponder the
ridiculous blabber in the E. Preuss quotation in the graphic. Jack Cascione had that on his website, where I kelmed it, until it began appearing on this blog. Suddenly, that wonderful UOJ essay by Robert Preus disappeared faster than a case of Jim Beam at a COP meeting.

Preuss declared that everyone is forgiven before birth - certainly a supersaturation of grace. And where is the Word of God in this? Nowhere to be found. Faith means believing that this absurdity is true. Even then, faith is mocked because there is really no content to faith when the Promises arrive before the Word or faith.

Therefore, the UOJ fanatics have nothing to offer but works. They are the greatest. Ask them. No, do not bother. They will fill in all the details. They will name their relatives and wait for a gasp of approval. They will point to their glorious achievements for Holy Mother Synod. They will harshly condemn anyone who disagrees with them as heretics, divisive, lazy, and "hurting the synod."

That is also why the UOJ synods have become bi-sectsual. They have no Gospel and cannot explain the simplest concepts of the Bible to their victims. They take shelter in the Babtist faith. Yes, that is a great irony. They spend a lot of time condemning everyone else for unionism, but they salivate at the thought of Babtists teaching them evangelism.

My informant told me that five went with Team Patterson, but doubtless many others from WELS and Missouri also attended. The ELS does some of it, too, while abhorring WELS participation.

Eight WELS workers went to the Andy Stanley Babtist worship festival - Drive. I linked the spontaneous, but organized dance planned for 2009. It was awesome!

Not a Photoshop - Andy Stanley explaining about two men being the new Babtist marriage style.
I think Andy is profoundly damaged by something in his family or his life.

Andy is cooking one up for 2013 too. The LCMS and WELS COPs should meet there - and be honest about it.

Because they have short-circuited the Means of Grace, the SynConference leaders have to substitute something else. Church Growth is always emitting some new fad, so those leaders are a constant source of inspiration for the sterile minds of Walther's heirs.

They are paying the Pied Pipers of Pietism to lead their members into Enthusiasm, hatred of the liturgy, and eventual Unitarian-Universalism. That is where Robert Schuller, Founder of Church Growth, took his congregation. When he was done with them, they accepted non-Christians as featured speakers at the Crystal Cathedral. And how could anyone tell the difference?

Embracing UOJ causes Justification by Faith to fall like a house of cards. The UOJ proponents at first try to defend it with some pretzel logic like "faith is merely the hand that accepts" or "you have already been forgiven at the Cross". The Efficacy of the Word becomes short circuited with this twisted sophistry. Just like that, they jump on the Babtist bandwagon. Besides the conferences that they attend, they want the laity to Fireproof their Marriage or a host of other guilt inducing Law pounding measures.

Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel has left a new comment on your post "UOJ Is Not All Grace But All Works. Why WELS, ELS,...":

I believe that one of the ways in which universal objective justification enthusiasts disrespect the Holy Spirit and his initiating and sustaining work of faith in the individual soul, is by their own limited (thinking) and words. They point out that:

"faith is merely the hand that accepts" [their common explanation]

The Holy Spirit is not at all to be regarded lightly. Nor is his work in the whole faith process "mere."

And, shall we not forget what Ephesians 2:8-9 basically says: "Grace through faith........."

In short UOJ enthusiasts end up attempting to make Holy Spirit faith in the individual soul, something which it isn't.

GJ - Everything they say is contrary to the Christian faith, contrary to the Scriptures, contrary to the Confessions. That is why they seek the out the Babtists - they are Gospel-starved. Some go Pentecostal, like the WELS missionaries (Taiwan) because they are Holy Spirit deprived. If they had been taught properly they would not be going after the Enthusiasts with such...ah, Enthusiasm.

UOJ Is Correct, If the Assumptions Are Correct.
But the Assumptions Are Dead Wrong

The assumptions of Universal Objective Justification skip the efficacy of the Word in the Means of Grace, which is clearly taught in the Scriptures and confessed in the Book of Concord.

I saw how consistent Luther and Confessors were when I began to look into this matter for Thy Strong Word.

The entire corpus supporting UOJ comes from Bishop Stephan, STD, his enforcer and minion, CFW Walther, and the leaders empowered in the Synodical Conference.

Not all the SynConference leaders taught UOJ, nor was it taught all the time in all places. The SynConference elected Gausewitz as their president, a singular honor and sign of respect. The Gausewitz catechism was the not just the WELS catechism but also the catechism for anyone else in the SynConference. No one condemned him as a heretic. No one ousted him for teaching justification by faith.

UOJ solidified in the ELS and WELS because of their ignorant and contentious leaders. Like Walther, they had to kick out and ban anyone who disagreed with them. Pope John the Malefactor (ELS) and Pope Paul the Plagiarist (LCMS) are truth Waltherians.

Bishop Stephan made his clergy obey him in abject submission. Anyone who made the mistake of dissenting was immediately disciplined and forced to pay homage to the syphilitic and adulterous leader.

Pietism goes well with a lack of education. Stephan never finished his university training. He started at Halle University, the fetid womb of Pietism, and did some more work at another school. Walther only had a college degree in rationalism and training in Pietism from Stephan.

The actual assumptions of the UOJ fanatics are:

  • Walther is the infallible exegete of Lutheran doctrine.
  • Everyone who agrees with UOJ is an authority on Lutheran doctrine.
  • If the Bible does not teach UOJ, we can fix that with the NNIV.
  • UOJ is the Gospel - faith is something bad, except as faith in UOJ, which is good.
  • Everyone is born forgiven. Everyone in the world is a guilt-free saint. Everyone is already saved.

Anyone who raises the historical issues (Pietism) or the Biblical issues (efficacy, Means of Grace) is brushed aside, because UOJ dogma trumps everything.

LPC has left a new comment on your post "UOJ Is Correct, If the Assumptions Are Correct.But...":

UOJ is wrong because it is founded on rational grounds not on exegetical grounds. I just read a few portions of Deutchslander's essays on Justification and I could not continue because I soon die in interest. I usually get that way when I encounter an inferior handling of the Sacred text.

GJ - The same things are said repeatedly, with no regard to exegesis. It is just the opposite of what WELS claims about Wauwatosi theology. They wedge their Enthusiasm into the text, no matter how poor the fit.

Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel has left a new comment on your post "UOJ Is Correct, If the Assumptions Are Correct.But...":

I would not doubt that one of the behind the scenes unconscious motivating factors for the acceptance and push for universal objective justification by Lutheran enthusiasts, is, that they cannot accept the plain words of our Lord:

Matthew 7:13 - Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many are they that enter in thereby.

Matthew 7:14 - For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto life, and few are they that find it. - KJV

These Lutheran enthusiasts, like the political correctness cosmos, cannot conceive that a gracious and loving God who sent His Son to die for the sins of the whole world would then send a large portion of His creation to hell. [Matthew 25:31-46] They go all agog over UOJ but conveniently ignore and forget that the Lord's first gift to mankind in the Garden, was free moral agency [free will].

Hence, the UOJ teaching, exacts and demands an unscriptural [universal] forgiveness for all where there is none; and hence, the works' righteousness infatuation with "church growth" gimmickry to attempt to widen the Narrow Gate.

Did the Lutheran Reformers Even Imagine That "Lutherans" Would Argue Against Justification by Faith?

All the arguments against Universal Objective Justification are clearly presented in the Augsburg Confession and the Apology of the Augsburg Confession. Melanchthon was the primary author of both, and Luther had a great appreciation for his associate's skills.

Martin Chemnitz, the senior editor of the Book of Concord/Formula of Concord, was a student of Melanchthon and Luther. Not one scrap can be found to support UOJ in the Book of Concord. That is why the WELS and the Little Sect on the Prairie only pay lip service to the Confessions.

If we look at three eras of the Reformation, we find this:
A. Early Reformation - Luther and Melanchthon taught justification by faith. 1530.
B. Reformation united - Chemnitz and the Concordists united behind a clear confession of justification by faith, rejecting errors that had crept into the Lutheran camp. 1580.
C. Post-Concord - Leyser and the Wittenberg faculty rejected Samuel Huber's early form of UOJ. Leyser was an editor of the Book of Concord and the biographer of Chemnitz, so he had a direct link to Luther and Melanchthon through Chemnitz.

Samuel Huber, the heretic, advocated saying this to unbelievers, just as Wayne Mueller and many others have. One Mequon professor said it was the basis for world missions:

You have the grace of God, you have the righteousness of Christ, you have salvation.

All three statements are standard fare in the Wisconsin Synod and ELS today. NPH reprinted the famous J. P. Meyer commentary, the source of three Kokomo Statements, and left it as is.

Sig Becker, the favorite theologian of WELS, spent the last days of his life defending UOJ.

The ELS officially hates Sig Becker, but this is their doctrinal statement:

By His perfect life and His innocent sufferings and death Jesus has redeemed the entire world. God thereby reconciled the world to Himself, and by the resurrection of His Son declared it to be righteous in Christ. This declaration of universal righteousness is often termed “objective justification.” One has this justification as a personal possession and is personally declared by God to be righteous in Christ when he or she is brought to faith in Him as Savior. This is often called “subjective justification”. If the objective fact of Christ’s atonement is not personally received by faith, then it has no saving benefit for the individual. We reject as unscriptural any teaching that people can be saved apart from faith in Jesus Christ. See 1 John 2:2, 2 Cor. 5:19, John 1:29, 2 Pet. 2:1, John 3:16-18, 2 Cor. 5:19, Rom. 4:25, 1:17 and 5:1-2.

The resurrection absolution is from Rambach (a Pietist) and Walther (another Pietist).

The Stream of Universal Objective Justification Teaching Continues It's Creeping Flow:

Ichabod -

To my disappointment and continued frustration, I heard more universalism proclaimed from our local WELS (Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod) pulpit. Our (10 years out of the seminary) young pastor was still on vacation, so our local Bethel congregation had a fill-in Sunday preacher. He was [is] the (recent and brief) former Saginaw MLS - Michigan Lutheran Seminary president, Rev. Aaron Frey.

Unless I dozed off during the sermon (and I think not, as the Rev. Frey has a boisterous voice at times; then a quieter one with pauses, at other times) - I again heard the nasty UOJ - universal objective justification creep into his sermon about the Gospel of Mark's account of Jesus calming the sea storm - Mark 4:35-41.

Part and parcel of the former MLS president's emphasis was, "Who starts the storm?" He readily discounted (a) nature; (b) the devil but, credited it to God the Father.

He then went on to ask and answer the question: "If God allows storms [in the life of the Christian] - what is His purpose?

Furthermore Rev. Frey went on to distinguish between "saving faith" and the Christian's "measurement of faith," mentioning that the faith that Jesus was talking about to His disciples (in the boat) was that (everyday type) trust faith - that "measurement of faith."

In the process, Rev. Frey stated [Paraphrase] - "that God goes to any length to remove your obstacles to saving faith."

He went on a little while after that, to assert how God looks upon us - [Paraphrase] - "You are forgiven; you are my son, my daughter - nothing in all creation can change that. No cause to concern; no worry; the Lord will bring you home to heaven." [Paraphrase]

Consequently, [then] am I to suppose that the Apostle Paul was just blowing hot air when he penned the Scripture (under the Holy Spirit's pointed inspirational direction)? - 2 Timothy 4:7 - "I have fought the good fight, I have finished the course, I have kept the faith."

And, if the Apostle Paul was just blowing hot air, it would be a lot less struggle if I and all Christians were to believe what the Rev. Aaron Frey related to the congregation this morning. Then we wouldn't have to struggle and fight the good fight of faith like the [apparent] disillusioned Apostle Paul. We could all then just attend Sunday morning worship; pray the confessional prayer, get absolved and cap it off with Holy Communion. [Oh yes - no mention in the sermon of the Holy Spirit - His work of creating and sustaining personal faith and belief]

Finally, again, I am disappointed in what WELS has been apparently seeding in their present and future parish pastors! In this case (with Rev. Frey), this was the man who was called to preside over a WELS high school and prep school for future parochial school teachers and parish pastors. In another posting to Ichabod I've illustrated (from WELS own educational materials) how the elementary children are being UOJ conditioned, and more recently a Vacation Bible School where personal faith, belief and the working of the Holy Spirit were scratched (eliminated).

Ichabod - Please continue to highlight this major teaching and preaching heresy of "universal objective justification." This departure from Scripture is truly alarming and very defining! As you stated in a recent posting, this false teaching is one of three major common error marks of those who depart from the divine revelation.

Pastor Bickel on the Present Sufferings

And it came to pass, that the beggar died, and
was carried by the angels into Abraham's bosom...
KJV Luke 16:22.

Ichabod -

You say in this posting:

>>>>>>>>> Once people worried about keeping their pastors, because they saw that as a good thing. Now a minority can work with the district presidents or bishops to get rid of the faithful. This is a regular occurrence. And it is no different, among the Episcopalians, the Baptists, the Methodists, and the rest. <<<<<<<<

NMB says:

Yes! Spot on! I can identify with what happens. I am familiar with having been stabbed in the back and having been thrown off the ecclesiastical bus. It's a type of [attempted] ecclesiastical molestation. But, I thank the good Lord that He gave me the faith to work through it all and move on. I kept my integrity and did not sign away my right to speak about it someday. And, you are correct - it happens across the denominational spectrum..........

You say:

>>>>>>>>When people say they are disillusioned by the visible church, I say, “Good! It was an illusion. Now you see the truth.” <<<<<<<<<<

NMB says:

Yes. So true. Faithful Christians and faithful Christian pastors soon learn when they get hacked up by the visible church, that their spiritual senses become alive. There is nothing like witnessing the flimsy facade and recognizing genuine substance. Those who go through such, are then graciously reminded and comforted with what they confessed many times, - "......I believe in the Holy Christian Church, the Communion of Saints, the forgiveness of sins......"

You say:

>>>>>>>> Lutherans supposedly have no issue with the divinity of Christ, but the leadership opposes justification by faith (while pretending to teach it). <<<<<<<<<<

I recently witnessed this, what you stated, going on before my very ears. This week I attended my grandson's VBS closing [service] program. No mention in this "Christian" Lutheran sanctuary of "God's grace through faith," but what was rather highlighted, was smackings of "universal objective justification." No mention of belief and personal faith and the narrow way that leads to life eternal. And, according to universal objective justification teaching, there is no need, because all have been justified [forgiven] by Christ's sacrifice on the cross. Oh yes, - part and parcel is the usual omission of the Holy Spirit and His work of authoring and sustaining personal faith.

Finally, - Ichabod - I always appreciate the Scripture of what the Apostle Paul was blessed to pen, - and, of which you have highlighted in this posting:

"For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us." - Romans 8:18 - KJV

I believe that the Lord chose the Apostle Paul to write that Holy Spirit inspired [authored] Scripture because the Apostle was no stranger to want, persecution and suffering. Given his religious background at the [then] time, the Lord knocked him off his horse to part with the “ecclesiastical” ways of his time. His emergent influence was not a swift Jack in the Beanstalk Growth, but a faith nurtured relationship with the Lord which brought him through those personal trial tough times. And so the Lord again blessed him to be the Holy Spirit inspired pen to write the following:

Galatians 6:17 - "Henceforth, let no man trouble me; for I bear branded on my body the marks of Jesus." - KJV

Expectation for the Truth To Be Revealed

Lenski:
For I reckon that the sufferings of this present period are not worthy to be compared with the glory about to be revealed in us.
“For” = in order that you may understand the better what has just been said about our suffering together with Christ and our also being glorified together with him. All of this will become clearer when we view ourselves in the midst of the entire suffering creature world which longs for our glorification at the last day. Do not occupy your mind exclusively with the little suffering which you individually endure but see this vast creature world groaning, and we with it, but having all its hope centered in us as the sons of God, centered upon us and on our deliverance. This is a mightier thing than the deliverance of us Christians only; and the more we see its vast proportions and the way in which God has bound up the whole creature world with us, his sons, the truer, surer, greater our own hope and assurance will become. “I reckon,” Paul writes and expresses his own personal conviction with the purpose of implanting the same conviction and insight into his readers.
From our suffering together with Christ, from the cross, the suffering we endure for Christ’s sake, Paul turns to our suffering in general, much of which is not for Christ’s sake, some of which is due only to our own sins and our faults which necessitate chastisement (Heb. 12:4–11), some of which is due to evil men, and some of which is incidental to our earthly existence. The only kind of suffering in which we glory (5:3) and can glory is that endured for Christ’s sake.
Lenski, R. C. H.: The Interpretation of St. Paul's Epistle to the Romans. Columbus, Ohio : Lutheran Book Concern, 1936, S. 529.

This epistle teaches us about the paradoxical nature of the Christian faith. A paradox is a seeming contradiction. There are many passages about peace in the Bible, almost every single one referring to the peace that comes with forgiveness of sin. Many people strive for that kind of peace, so why would the Gospel talk about and promise suffering?

Paul is talking about suffering and the cross. Lenski has divided the topic of suffering into three categories:
  1. Suffering because of the Word – the cross.
  2. Suffering because of our own sins and mistakes, which bring chastisement (Hebrews 12:4-11. Peter distinguishes between this and the cross in 1 Peter.)
  3. Suffering from evil people, which is part of living in this sinful world.

KJV Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.

The current measuring stick for congregations is now entirely material. Are the bills paid and the budget big? Is everyone happy? Are the numbers always improving?

Rob Bell became famous for having one of those huge churches, but he had to resign once his denial of Biblical truths became known. I published about him but had to look up his name. He was trained at Fuller Seminary.

Some obvious flaws in Bell’s thinking are found here:

Luther wrote about this topic, showing that the Bible does not teach about glory, but about the cross. The message of the cross, suffering because of the Word, is a constant in Luther’s sermons, just as it is central in the message of Jesus.

That is the contradiction. People want success for their denomination or parish, but the foundational requirement from God is faithfulness to His Word, which brings the cross.

Doubtless everyone thinks that being a Christian in a Christian country, with freedom of religion, should be rather peaceful. But that is not so.

The reason is plain. As soon as the Holy Spirit takes root in a person, through faith, Satan wants his original disciple back. Children may experience this. Adolescents do, and adults never stop experiencing this warfare. Luther called it Two Kingdoms – the battle between Christ’s Kingdom and Satan’s.

But already in this one verse, Paul describes the situation and offers Gospel promises. The suffering now (the cross) is nothing compared to the glory to be revealed.

19 For the earnest expectation of the creature waiteth for the manifestation of the sons of God.

Even in our sinful state we wait for the time when all truth will be revealed. This is a burden, to belief in this truth and to see it case aside with such scorn and hatred. Where we want to see faithfulness to that truth, we find rejection.

I have learned to spot atheistic posts on the Net. I read a few to see what their line of thinking is. But they are all too predictable and a pitiful lot at that. Their Father Below rewards them for now, but he will have his harvest soon enough.

The hard part, as Luther observed, is to find this same attitude among the great and wise leaders of the church. Luther was a nothing  in the church at the time, easily stopped and killed – like Huss, Tyndale, and Robert Barnes.

Lutheran orthodoxy is clearly defined in the Augsburg Confession, which is little more than a booklet. Anyone can grasp all the important parts. Some later articles are not too interesting to us, because they involve the Medieval Church. But the basics are expressed with child-like simplicity, in brief but powerful statements.

People know that, but where is that taught among the great and wise today? That is part of the suffering today, not only to experience the blindness, but to feel the hatred and scorn for the truth. The Lutheran papacy is no better than the Roman papacy of the Reformation.

Once people worried about keeping their pastors, because they saw that as a good thing. Now a minority can work with the district presidents or bishops to get rid of the faithful. This is a regular occurrence.

And it is no different, among the Episcopalians, the Baptists, the Methodists, and the rest.

I do not agree with them, but I see the same basic battle – faith versus unbelief, the obvious confessions or documents of that group versus the obvious apostasy of the leaders. And they richly reward their apostates with money from…the faithful.

Meanwhile we can easily see a massive retaliation against the Christian faith world-wide, whether in Africa or China. As one member said long ago, “In the West, the persecution takes the form of indifference.”

Although we wait for the manifestation of the truth, the fact remains that this truth will come out at the end.

KJV Philippians 2:6 Who, being in the form of God, thought it not robbery to be equal with God: 7 But made himself of no reputation, and took upon him the form of a servant, and was made in the likeness of men: 8 And being found in fashion as a man, he humbled himself, and became obedient unto death, even the death of the cross. 9 Wherefore God also hath highly exalted him, and given him a name which is above every name: 10 That at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of things in heaven, and things in earth, and things under the earth; 11 And that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

This great confession and hymn and poem in Philippians is clearly expressing the end of time, when every truth will be revealed for all to see.

This is the paradox – that everything in this world was created by Christ the Creating Word (Genesis 1 and John 1). That is what everyone loves – what they see. But they do not like the Creator and scorn the Messiah.

Although the Son of God became flesh to reveal the grace and mercy of God, He was met with rebuke, suffering, and the cross.

When the Holy Spirit has revealed this to people through the Word, everything makes sense, from the beginning of Creation until now. However, we are still weak and frail, easily made timid or confused the difference between the truth we know from the Word and the things we see around us.

When people say they are disillusioned by the visible church, I say, “Good! It was an illusion. Now you see the truth.”

Others would rather have the false peace of protecting the illusion, which leads to ever more absurd statements, such as, “The Holy Spirit appointed him, so I cannot disagree. That is like arguing with God Himself.” That reasoning comes straight from Roman Catholicism but it is current today among Lutherans – and also rewarded by them. (Likewise – Pope Pius IX punished everyone who argued against his infallibility, except his son – the cardinal, and rewarded all those who promoted his divine status. The Ultramontanes, as they are called, have been in control ever since.)

20 For the creature was made subject to vanity, not willingly, but by reason of him who hath subjected the same in hope, 21 Because the creature itself also shall be delivered from the bondage of corruption into the glorious liberty of the children of God.

It seems shameful, that the minority must defend the basic Gospel, justification by faith, in the face of opposition. But there are only three main attacks against the Christian faith:
Against the divinity of Christ.
Against the humanity of Christ.
Against justification by faith.

Many of my counterparts, in various denominations, are arguing the divinity of Christ through the authority of the Scriptures.

Lutherans supposedly have no issue with the divinity of Christ, but the leadership opposes justification by faith (while pretending to teach it).

In either case the defenders have the opportunity to see the Word tested and defined, their own trust in the Scriptures growing with each battle.

Salesmen call it The Takeaway. Tell people, “You cannot afford this,” and they say “Yes we can!” Tell them, “You are not ready to decide,” and they will say, “I have decided.” Salesmen even pull the item or the contract away while saying those words.

The Takeaway works with the Gospel, the liturgy, the Creeds, the hymns. When someone takes away what we took for granted, we hold onto it all the more.
