Today is Luther's Birthday, Robert Felts' birthday (my wife's dad), and the 20th anniversary of my quitting the LCMS in my quest for the mythical orthodox synod. While the ELS had and has some very pious and orthodox members, neither it, nor the LCMS, nor any other synod of which I am aware, is an orthodox synod by the standard set forth in A Brief Statement. I knew this all along, but it is always helpful to learn things by experience.

Most orthodox Lutherans in America are in the LCMS, but they are by no means limited to the LCMS. Where the love of sound theology is greater than the love for the synod, the synod is best served. Luther's birthday is a good day to remind ourselves of what is most precious in our lives. Is it the present outward arrangement of the church? Or is it the gospel from which the church is born and becomes the mother of us all?

Pastor Rolf David Preus

No one has spent more time attacking Luther's doctrine of Justification by Faith than Rolf Preus.

Like Jay Webber, he identifies those who teach Pietism's Objective Justification as "orthodox."

To wish Luther a Happy Birthday on this day, while subverting Biblical doctrine at every turn - and sometimes pretending to support JBFA - that earns The Spatula of Ironic Boldness.

Jay Webber marked the Reformation's 500th on his Facebook page, but has been slothful about congratulating Luther today. Thus he only qualifies for the much less distinguished award, The Frisbee of Fanatical Enthusiasm.
