Daily Luther Sermon Quote - Trinity 16 - "Hence, when you have people, who fear sin and condemnation, they are already dead, you dare not preach to these much more of the law, you must show them the way of salvation and preach to them the Gospel. When our Papists meet such troubled souls, they refer them to rosaries, to pilgrimages, to this and that work; but one helps like the other."

The first Baptism hymn in The Lutheran Hymnal is from Rambach the Pietist.

Luther's Sermons - Luke 7:11-17. The Widow's Son.
Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity. First Sermon

 15. Thus God certainly deals also with us. Here we should learn the kind of God we have, namely, he who surrounds us and is about us in our very greatest dangers and troubles. Therefore, if one is poor, sticks deep in sin, lies in death, is in sorrows and other afflictions, he thinks: it is a transition state, it is a drop and a spark; for God has surrounded him on all sides with pure wealth, righteousness, life and joy, only he does not permit him to see it. But it is a matter of only a little time when we shall see and enjoy it. Thus you have here an example, not of faith, but of the pure grace and lovingkindness of God. Now we must also say a little on the spiritual understanding or the allegorical interpretation of to-day’s Gospel.

II. THE SPIRITUAL INTERPRETATION OF THIS MIRACLE.

16. All works and miracles that Christ does visibly and publicly should be interpreted to the end that they may show forth the works which he does among men unseen and spiritually or within them. Therefore this bodily death signifies the spiritual death of the soul, which man must believe. For no one can see into the soul of another while we live; but when we are dead, we then have other eyes, then we see that the whole world is dead. Therefore the Lord spoke to a Pharisee, Matthew 8:22, who first wanted to go and bury his father: “Follow me, and leave the dead to bury their own dead.”

17. This youth who is here being borne to his grave is bodily dead. But there are also some inwardly dead before God who still live here in the body. The soul is dead that does not believe in God and cleave to him. And even though he be in the midst of death, yet he lives, as I said above.

18. This spiritual death occurs in a twofold manner: some are dead in their soul, but no one sees that death as we see bodily death, and this woman herself neither sees nor feels it. So the whole world is dead, but it realizes it not. Therefore some are also spiritually dead, who feel it well enough, as those whom the law has terribly punished. We do not here speak of those who care nothing for spiritual death; but of those who feel that they are dead and that their heart trembles, and who feel in their conscience that they have an unbelieving heart. He is dead quite otherwise than he who does not feel it, and yet always lives in wantonness. Now the one who does not experience their unbelief cannot be helped, for he does not know his sickness, and lives on, cares nothing for God nor the world. But he who feels this death, suffers misery and distress, there is struggling and despair, the world becomes too confined for him, he seeks assistance and advice, he despises neither stone nor wood, when they can afford him counsel, not to say that he should hear anything of man, even of the most insignificant person.

19. Who now gives him this feeling. The law does it, in that it reveals sin. The law says: “Thou shalt have no other gods.” When I hear this, I must and should do it, but I cannot. Then I quickly conclude that I am condemned. When I act thus, death comes immediately and there is such a struggle in my heart, that if I should receive no help I would have to remain forever in this death and struggle. This then is the death of the only son, who lies in the bier, the pallbearers are continually carrying him into hell.

20. The pallbearers are the preachers of the law, who do nothing else than plunge mankind ever deeper and deeper into death; as those here hasten to the grave with the dead they are the more terrified and driven the deeper into perdition. It never becomes better with mankind, yea, it is ever growing worse.

21. This we have thoroughly experienced under the Pope, in our confession of and in our making satisfaction for sin. We allowed ourselves to think we would atone for our sins by good works; but it was only an anxiety of the conscience. Thus we ever sank deeper toward hell. Hence, when you have people, who fear sin and condemnation, they are already dead, you dare not preach to these much more of the law, you must show them the way of salvation and preach to them the Gospel. When our Papists meet such troubled souls, they refer them to rosaries, to pilgrimages, to this and that work; but one helps like the other.

The Big Five - ELCA-LCMS-WELS-ELS-CLC (sic) - All Have Abandoned the Chief Article of Christianity

Luther, Melanchthon, and Chemnitz confessed the Chief Article.

The Big Five - ELCA-LCMS-WELS-ELS-CLC (sic) have abandoned the Chief Article of Christianity. They - One in Thrivent - have united to repudiate and dismiss Justification by Faith. Normally, they do not admit to their deceptions, but they vomit their hatred when someone insists on Justification by Faith.

KJV Romans 4 - Abraham is the example of Justification by Faith.

20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God; 21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform. 22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness. 23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed (counted) to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

The Walther sects (LCMS-LCMS-ELS) conveniently leave out verse 24, which clearly says "if we believe on Him." referring to verse 21-23 that Abraham's faith was counted to him as righteousness.

The Walther sects shorten and distort Romans 4 on faith, using a phrase from verse 25 - "Raised again for our justification." Lathered up for more corruption, they tie 1 Timothy 3:16 to Romans 4:25 alone, to claim the entire world back to Adam was declared forgiven.

WELS/LCMS chatter-mouths say, "I was saved 2000 years ago!"

The Walther sects have their foundation in Bishop Stephan's Halle distortion (via Rambach), that the resurrection of Christ is the entire world's absolution. Jesus was without sin, but they declare that "justified in the Spirit" definitely depends on Jesus needing absolution for the world. Instead, the Scriptures teach that the empty tomb revealed the righteousness of God because Jesus was without sin

As Dr. Lito Cruz says, "The OJ people suffer from hallucinogenic justification."

Having Fun with Falsehoods

KJV Romans 5: Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God. 3 And not only so, but we glory in tribulations also: knowing that tribulation worketh patience; 4 And patience, experience; and experience, hope: 5 And hope maketh not ashamed; because the love of God is shed abroad in our hearts by the Holy Ghost which is given unto us.

I saw a post on Facebook which was from Romans 5. I was curious because he was an advocate of Objective Faithless Justification and used to be an atheist. He did not include the first few verses of Romans 5, so I could imagine him going over the same nonsense as before, excluding the Apostle Paul verbatim to prop up the OJ of Pietism at Halle University. Most remember that Halle University moved quickly from Biblical Pietism to Rationalism. The Rationalists are the stars of ELCA eggheads. Fortress Press even had a series of books honoring them.

WELS-LCMS-Seminex-ALC: Jungkuntz pollinated the Lutheran sects and as chair of the Concordia Seminary split, sponsored the gay seminary at their location - Metropolitan Community Church. The irony is - WELS tossed him out when they were false exegetes and false teachers on steroids,.

Rambach - Halle University - Easter grave absolution of the world.

If Romans 4 is the perfect discussion of Justification by Faith based on Abraham, the Father of Faith, then the opening of Romans 5 must frame the ultimate conclusion.

The answer is simple - faith in our Lord Jesus Christ is access to grace. That forgiveness gives us peace.

The "former" atheist quoted Romans 5 from verse 5 on, excluding Romans 5:1-4.

The thrice-blessed-holier-than-the-Bible LCMS Brief Statement of 1932 teaches that Romans 4 is Objective Justification! They have been hanging onto this falsehood for almost 100 years. Thanks be to their Father Below, they have consolidated this OJ claim as pure Gospel in the LCMS-WELS-ELS-CLC (sic) and ELCA.

But -

KJV Romans 4:23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him; 24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead; 25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

Ever since, the OJ cults (listed above) have taught verse 25 by itself, excluding what is clearly revealed in verse 24 - the righteousness of Christ is imputed if we believe.

Lenski

Our congregation is very involved in knowing more about RCH Lenski. In looking up his bio in Wickedpedia, I noticed a bizarre form of editing, footnotes without the context in the main part.

By the way, a Google search of Lenski's name picks up the cover of Lutheran Library's Kings and Priests, published by LL.

Lenski is accused of not having sympathy for the Calvinists (James White) and therefore being an Arminian. The humorous definition of Arminian is "someone who disagrees with Calvin." The entire Wiki post is a rave against Lenski, using the label Arminian repeatedly and with rancor.

This is less subtle than the typical OJ repeat-after-me dogmatics (Webber, Rolf Preus, Scaer, etc). Both OJ errors are examples of using a phrase or a concept to obscure what the Scriptures reveal.

OJ Lutherans will toss out the term Arminian as derogatory because they cannot get their lying lips to say "He believes in Justification by Faith - I don't!"

Mrs. Kilcrease is rather fond of this graphic.

Your Abusive Lutheran Sect Preaches Against Faith - WELS, ELCA, LCMS, ELS, CLC - And Against the Bible

 All Time Views9,900,020

The United World Religion Corporation teaches one thing - assuming we are all simpletons who cannot read - Everyone Is Born Forgiven. They have turned the atoning death of Jesus Christ into universal forgiveness, universal grace, universal salvation. While waving their "sola" signs on Reformation Sunday, they are picking your pockets, emptying your purses, and stealing your mother's estate (Irrevocable Charitable Trust, aka, there goes the farm forever).

The only thing they preach with clarity and energy is We Need More Money To Do His Work. But His means - Their Father Below.

The abusive sects - especially the abusive Lutheran sects - teach grace. They sing Amazing Grace all the time, which may explain why everything and everyone is amazing today. How do we get this amazing grace, some wonder. Simple! Everyone has grace, even before grace, called prevenient grace, that grace which comes before grace, like "Your frozen pizza is coming" although it is not there yet and nobody knows where it is.

The Abusive Lutheran Sects, aka Thrivent victims, claim everyone in the world was forgiven

  1. The moment Jesus died on the cross,
  2. The moment Jesus rose from death,
  3. The moment Adam and Eve were forgiven.

That may sound as confusing as it really is, but the key factor in those claims is this - forgiveness without faith = grace = salvation.

Even the greats - Sam Nafzger and David Valleskey and Mirthless Mark Schroeder - agree to the formula handed down by Calvin and Halle University.

Didja know Halle University, founded on Pietism, was the hotbed for moving away from faith in the Scriptures and into pure rationalism? ELCA calls that "Biblical scholarship" and LCMS-WELS-ELS calls it Universal Objective Faithless Justification.

The Real Message of Grace in Romans

The abusive Lutheran sects are hotter than Georgia asphalt for grace, so why not find out how we obtain grace in Romans (the recent site of New NIV apostasy in Romans 3 - all are justified)?

KJV Romans 5:5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ: 2 By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

I realize many in the readership do not have a decent Bible, like the KJV. However, most people understand these two verses.

  • Faith in our Lord Jesus Christ gives us peace through forgiveness of sin.
  • This faith gives us access into this grace.

ELCA and the LCMS-ELS-WELS-CLC (sic) Confuse Justification and Atonement - Part Four of the Blasphemy Essay

Johann Wilhelm Baier was born in 1647 and died in 1695. He taught at Halle University, the mother ship of Pietism, a fact never mentioned when people say "Oh! Baier! Walther edited him!"

Justification/Atonement - Fourth Part of the Blasphemy Essay

Bishop Martin Stephan's pimp, CFW Walther, began forging the dogmatics leg irons of Missouri with his edition of Wilhelm Baier, a 17th century Pietist dogmatician at Halle University. Baier is now largely forgotten, or ignored, or forgotten-yet-praised because he was blessed by the Great Walther Himself and Francis Pieper Himself.

Halle's Pietism soon turned into rationalism, the branch now highly praised by ELCA Biblical scholars and CPH (see the elaborate pratfall of their two volume Gospel of Mark commentary).

Nobody ever says, "Oh! Rambach!" - except Jay Webber rose to support this Halle Pietist on 1 Timothy 3:16. See Steadfast (sic) Lutherans.

The Halle gang is protected by the Pietistic and the Rationalistic strands of Lutheran apostasy and blasphemy. Just to be polite - the doctrinal foundation of Walther and Pieper was not the Lutheran Reformation but the Halle Deformation. That is why Jay Webber so gleefully embraces the Pietist Quistorp to prop up his Objective Justification errors. And yes, Walther also liked and quoted Quistorp.

1Johann Quistorp; quoted in C. F. W. Walther, Justification: Subjective and Objective (translated by Kurt E. Marquart) (Fort Wayne, Indiana: Concordia Theological Seminary Press, 1982), p. 21. 3. Cited by Jay Webber.

Lutheran dogmatics are best summarized by their reactions against the constant yowling pack of Calvinists, who were always trying to pick apart Luther, Melanchthon, Chemnitz, and Gerhard (not to be confused with the hymn writer Gerhardt).

Many are waiting for a retraction from David Scaer. The peacock is a symbol used by Luther - the strutting know it all who makes a lot of noise because its feet (foundation) are so ugly.

Just to be concise and not turn into another batch of verbose dogmatics experts, faithful Lutherans can summarize the error of the Objective Justification fanatics as merging Justification by Faith with the Atonement.

Traditional Lutherans believe in Justification by Faith because they have not been brain-damaged by repeat-after-me graduates and professors of Mordor, Ft. Wayne, St. Louis, and the Little Schoolhouse on the Prairie. The OJ cancer is deeply troubled by the Chief Article, because faith is necessarily individual, not universal.

The ELS is in denial about their favorite dogma being pure hogwash. The Halle DNA mixed with Calvinist Enthusiasm created an eternal truth - the residents in Hell (Hitler, Stalin, Mao) are guilt-free saints.

Heirs of Knapp-Woods confused people into thinking that the entire world was absolved of all sin - that believing this nonsense was Subjective Justification - two justifications without faith! Walther taught making a decision for Objective Justification was just perfect.

The poorly educated leaders of the synods think they can paste sticky notes all through the Bible - OJ and SJ. "For God so loved the world (OJ!) that He gave His only Son (OJ again!) so that whosoever believed (SJ!) in Him might not perish (OJ!) but have everlasting life."

The man who covered up his bishop's syphilitic adultery until the right time to stage a riot and steal gold, land, and books - that Pietist embraced the Objective Justification taught by Martin Stephan, STD.

Their idea of salvation is exactly the same, with a minor concession from LCMS-WELS-ELS-CLC side - an individual must make a decision, agreeing that everyone is already forgiven and saved without faith.

Is everyone clear on this? The president of WELS' shrinking seminary was an expert on Church Growth and grace without the Means of Grace.

ELCA has reached the obvious conclusion of apostasy - grace means everyone is forgiven and saved, without faith. They say, twisting Romans 4, that it is either grace or faith, and faith is Law.

The whole stack of Lutheran leaders has united around Thrivent loot and quasi-Unitarian dogma - social activism as necessary, faith in Jesus Christ the Son of God, not.

"Our work is done. Pacification is complete. All accept the forgiveness of salvation of all people. Our members are fewer but the dogma is pure.

Blasphemy Part Three -
Who Infused the LCMS-WELS-ELS with Objective (Faithless) Justification?
Answer - Pietists and Universalists

Bishop Martin Stephan, STD and Bishop Randy DeJaynes, LCA.
Parts 1, 2, and 3 here.

Even the most dense can agree that ELCA is the fool's gold standard of Lutherdom today. That  merger of mergers has gathered the LCMS-WELS-ELS under his/her/its wings and laid down the rules for enjoying Thrivent money and programs.

ELCA is the bellweather in declaring that everyone is born forgiven because of God's grace. That comes from two sources - the Pietists and the rationalists.

Rambach was the Halle University hymn writer (see The Lutheran Hymnal, #298) who wrote these words, treasured by Jay Webber, among others. Stephan studied at Halle and was a Pietist.

Walther was a Pietist and his friends followed one Pietist guru, then Stephan after their earlier leader moved away and died. Walther was thrilled with the letter Stephan wrote him and never drifted from that dogma. After losing their earlier guru, they followed Stephan all the way to America, after he was convicted of consorting with young women and misuse of church funds.

Later, Walther was thrilled with the double justification terms used by the Calvinist translator of Knapp, another Halle University theologian, one much admired in America and translated into English, a standard work for over 90 years.

The Reformed-Lutheran union movement enjoyed the peaceful physical and doctrinal merger of the two schools of thought. The Woods translation fostered the use of Objective Justification and Subjective Justification, with OJ dominating.

Rationalism, born at Halle and other places, gravitated toward God's grace acting without means (Word and Sacrament) and saving the entire world back to Adam and Eve.

A Brief History of Objective Justification, Part 1

The modern translations are either owned by the Calvinists - like the ESV - or reliant on Calvinist paraphrasing.

Calvin pretended to be Lutheran, much like the LCMS-WELS-ELS-ELDONA today. He hated Luther's Biblical doctrine, much like the synods today. He separated the Word from the Spirit and promoted a rationalistic perspective of the Bible.

Leyser identified the falsehood of Huber, who had been a Calvinist but was teaching as a Lutheran.

Leyser and his colleagues kicked Huber out. Thanks to Walther, the Lutheran leaders have licked Huber's boots - as they have with their joint approval of Objective Justification.

Classic Walther Quote on Ludicrous Quest -
Luther Seldom Mentioned, Never Understood

 Rick Strickert (Carlvehse)
Senior Member
Username: Carlvehse.
Stephan's lawyers covered up for Stephan's adultery, just as Walther did. Stephan left his dying wife at home with the dying children he infected, and booked his mistress on the same ship, conveniently near his cabin.

The Ludicrous quote begineth here:
Walther's sermon, "Zweite Predigt am heiligen Ostertage," is found in the book, Lutherische Brosamen: Predigten und Reden, seit 1847 theils in Pamphletform, theils in Zeitschriften bereits erschienen, in einem Sammelband aufs Neue dargeboten (Carl Ferdinand Wilhelm Walther
M.C. Barthel, 1876, p. 138ff).

Here is the particular passage, located on page 143:
quote:

An English translation of the sermon appears in Rev. Joel Baseley's 2008 book, From Our Master's Table: Sermons and Addresses Already Appearing Since 1847 Partly in Pamphlet Form and Partly in Periodicals, Now Offered in a Single Volume of Dr. C.F.W. Walther. The translated excerpt is found on page 73:
quote:

As a result of Christ's having been raised from the dead, it is impossible for a person to think: "When I approach God with my sins what will God do? I wonder if he will forgive me for them?" No. No matter who you are, you may now say without hesitation: Since God has already forgiven them 1800 years ago, as he absolved everyone for whom Christ entered into bitter death, alike, in Christ by his resurrection, only one thing is still necessary to be done on your part so that you also will have what is being given you, and that one thing is - faith.

And this, then, leads me to the second part of today's Easter proclamation, in which I must show you now secondly, that every person who, therefore wants to be saved must now receive the universal absolution actually proclaimed already 1800 years ago through faith as also spoken by him.

Here endeth the Ludicrous quote.

***

GJ - They "prove" their OJ by repeating the same quote I have used numerous times, but there is no Scriptural, Luther, or Book of Concord warrant for this claim. The false doctrine rests on the wrong (Rambach Pietist) explanation of 1 Timothy 3:16. Chemnitz did not explain 1 Timothy 3:16 that way, but ELS Stormtrooper Jay Webber argued Ramach the Pietist against Chemnitz the Book of Concord editor.

Rambach was a Pietist of the Pietists, at Halle. Notice - universal justification/absolution without the Means of Grace.
How often have I used this to show Walther's rebellion against Justification by Faith?

OJ Stormtroopers Jay Webber and DP Buchholz repeat the same bromides as Rambach and Walther.

Worth Reading Again - Lindee, Rambach, Webber, and Objective Justification

The original post is here.

The upcoming Snore-a-Thon, called the Emmaus Conference, will feature Jay Webber promoting his "in Christ" flavor of Universal Objective Justification. All the flavors are toxic and remarkably similar, but there are two divergent and discordant paths they take.

One is making "It is finished" mean that the entire world was justified and saved--without faith--the moment Christ died on the cross.

The other is using 1 Timothy 3:16's "justified in the Spirit" mean that since Jesus was justified, the entire world was justified and saved "IN CHRIST" - without faith.

1 Tim 3:16 And without controversy great is the mystery of godliness: God was

  • manifest in the flesh,
  • justified in the Spirit,
  • seen of angels,
  • preached unto the Gentiles,
  • believed on in the world,
  • received up into glory.
Thus Jay Webber rejected the Martin Chemnitz interpretation of this verse in favor of Rambach's, without mentioning that Rambach was a Halle Pietist known chiefly for writing several hymns in The Lutheran Hymnal.

Intrepid Lutherans, 2011 -
Jay Webber Defending the Halle Pietist Rambach
Mr. Douglas Lindee said...

Rev. Webber,

I've been away from my desk for several hours now, and I notice that I have been addressed in several posts, above, but your last post is foremost on my mind at the moment. I am disappointed. Of course, none of us have ever heard of this theologian you quote with distinction, Johann Jacob Rambach, and use to discredit the orthodox theologian Martin Chemnitz in his exegesis of 1 Tim. 3:16. One of us Intrepids -- not me, not Rev's Rydecki or Spencer, but one of us who does a lot of work behind the scenes -- began feverishly researching this theologian, to find out who he is. You quote Rambach from Schmidt/Marquart, so perhaps you don't really know who he is, either. I assume, in all charity, that you don't.

What our fellow Intrepid found is that Rambach was a confessing Pietist. In fact, several essays from the WELS essay file identify and criticize him as such:

Pietism’s Teaching on Church and Ministry: As Evidenced in its Pastoral Practice
After Three Centuries - The Legacy of Pietism
Agreement on the Correct View of the Authority of Scripture as the Source of Doctrine: The Way to Unity in the Church
A Historical Survey and Brief Examination of the Hymnbooks Used Within the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod
The Confessional Lutheran Emigrations From Prussia And Saxony Around 1839

When I found out about this, I immediately pulled my copy of Loescher's Timotheus Verinus off the shelf, only to discover that Loescher really had nothing to say about the man. But when I pulled Schmid's History of Pietism down, and search for Rambach, I discovered that he was no ordinary Pietist. He was a Halle Pietist, and a close associate of Hermann August Franke. Schmid, on page 319, identifies Rambach as a Halle Pietist and compatriot of Franke, and credits Rambach for his accomplishments in the area of hermeneutics -- which is, no doubt, how it is that we find him prominently mentioned in F.S Schmidt's work. However, on page 320 Schmid qualifies his praise of such pietists, stating that their accomplishments are low compared to the harm caused by them: thee use of such accomplishments was for the purpose of discrediting orthodoxy. And here we are now, treated to the authoritative work of a German exegete of whom we were happily ignorant, who is marshaled for the purpose of discrediting Chemnitz and elevating UOJ, only to discover that this man was a bona fide Halle Pietist, and that he engaged his work, alongside that of Franke and other radical Pietists, to serve the design of toppling Lutheran orthodoxy.
You know, we at IL have been very careful, for the sake of fraternity, to avoid mention of his name or reference to his research on this subject. But the prominent use of a Halle Pietist, who produced his work at the pinnacle of the period of radical German Pietism, to discredit an orthodox theologian like Chemnitz and instead supporting the teaching of Universal Objective Justification, only proves Dr. Jackson's thesis: UOJ did emerge from Halle Pietism. I myself, up to this point, have been skeptical of this thesis, as my own extended and personal contact with confessing Pietists has had me convinced that they are not guilty of distinguishing Objective from Subjective aspects of Justification -- certainly not to the elevation of the Objective! -- as everything for them is Subjective. But rather, I had thought, they are guilty of separating (subjective) Justification from Conversion. You yourself have read Iver Olson's Baptism and Spiritual Life, and know precisely what I am referring to. To me, if there was anything to Dr. Jackson's connection of Halle to UOJ, it was in later Halle Rationalism. But now there can be no doubt. Rambach, a bona fide Halle Pietist, supplied the foundation necessary to topple formerly orthodox teaching on the matter of Justification.
David Jay Webber said...
I knew that Rambach was a pietist. I was not using his observations on this verse to discredit Chemnitz, but to supplement Chemnitz. His exegesis and reflections stand on their own, and should be evaluated on their own merits, regardless of what he might have said on other topics on other occasions. And it is also clear that on this topic in particular, he was not inventing a new pietist notion, but was recapitulating the orthodox teaching of the orthodox theologian Quistorp. Theologians with pietist leanings were not wrong in everything they said, especially when they were repeating the sound teaching of orthodox theologians of earlier times.
---

NINETEENTH EVENING LECTURE, Walther.

(February 20, 1885.)

One of the most important of the many doctrinal differences that were discussed during the first half of the eighteenth century between the so-called Pietists and the Orthodoxists was this: the Pietists — disciples, though not altogether faithful disciples, you know, of Spener, August Herman Francke, and John Jacob Rambach — held that any one unable to state the exact day and hour when he was converted and entered into grace was certainly not a true Christian and could be regarded as such neither by himself nor by others.

GJ
Quistorp - He is even more removed from Lutheran memory than Rambach. Here is what one expert said -
Unquestionably, Mueller, Quistorp, and Grossgebauer can all be counted among the piety movement initiated by Johannes Arndt in the early seventeenth century. All three stressed the practice of the Christian life over doctrinal matters.
(Jonathan Strom, Orthodoxy and Reform: The Clergy in 17th Century Rostock, 1999, p. 244.)
Jay Webber, MDiv, uses "orthodox" twice for Quistorp, but Strom, a PhD from the University of Chicago says otherwise.
Most people would limit the Age of Lutheran Orthodoxy to the Concordists and some immediate successors, such as Gerhard, who worked with Chemnitz, and P. Leyser, who was an expert in justification and helped edit the Book of Concord. Leyser crushed Samuel Huber, the first UO Jay in Lutherdom.
Robert Preus' two-volume work shows that orthodoxy waned after the Lutheran Reformation and the Book of Concord (1580) era. This particular Jay Webber gambit seems to say, "I cannot find UOJ in the Scriptures, the Book of Concord, or the Concordists, so I will keep searching until I can find support at Halle University or cite someone so obscure that Google hardly knows his name.

UOJ and the Resurrection, Rambach, Stephan, Walther, and Webber

Easter Absolution and Pietism < Must read

Brethren: It has been brought to my attention by an LCMS pastor friend that the doctrine of Objective Justification can also be taught under the Second Article, in the explanation of the Resurrection of Christ.

With reference to the Synodical Conference synods Catechisms prior to 1966, these were my findings when I examined the Second Article in the Catechisms (caps added:)

1912 LCMS (Schwan) Catechism, Second Article, the Resurrection of Christ, "Qu. 163: Why is the resurrection of Christ so comforting to us?  A: Because it conclusive evidence,--1, That Christ is the Son of God, and that His doctrine is the truth; 2. That God the Father has accepted the sacrifice of His Son FOR THE RECONCILIATION OF THE WORLD; 3. That all believers shall rise unto eternal life."

1943 LCMS (Intersynodical) Catechism: "Qu. 152: Why is the resurrection of Christ of such importance and comfort to us?  A: Christ's resurrection definitely proves--A. That Christ is the Son of God;  B. That His doctrine is the truth; C. That God the Father has accepted the sacrifice of His Son for the RECONCILIATION OF THE WORLD; D. That all believers shall rise unto eternal life."

The other Catechisms when speaking of the Resurrection of Christ used terminology which indicated that the Atonement of Christ was being referred to rather than to an Objective Justification of all people, so there seems to have been a difference between the Catechisms about how to teach the benefits of the Resurrection if Christ which has continued to this day.  Of the 16 different Synodical Conference synod Catechisms which I consulted, 8 apparently taught the doctrine of Objective Justification under the Second Article and 8 under the Third Article, the Forgiveness of Sins.  Some Catechisms taught it under both Articles, the rest only under the Third Article.  The 2017 LCMS Catechism was vague regarding both Articles.

I sincerely apologize for not having checked the Second Article before sharing my earlier findings; I have ONLY heard of Objective Justification being taught under the Third Article, and even then--as an adult convert to TALC, then the LCMS--only when I attended the Fort Wayne seminary.  Prior to that I had only been taught JBFA.

A final thought: I noticed in my research that a crucial element in the teaching of Objective/Subjective Justification in the Catechisms was to "move" the IMPUTATION of Christ's righteousness from when a person is brought to faith in Christ by the Holy Spirit through the Gospel in the Means of Grace (JBFA) to the "Easter Declaration," by which God the Father justified and reconciled and forgave the whole human race at the SAME time as imputing Christ's righteousness to them.  --WM

Full Color Edition of The Faith of Jesus: Against the Faithless Lutherans Will Go into Production Today, God Willing and the Cricks Don't Rise

Today I am going to finish fixing the typos found in the black and white edition of The Faith of Jesus: Against the Faithless Lutherans.

Once that improved file is received by the publishing arm of Team Ichabod, the new edition will be prepped for Create Space (Amazon).

Listen up, readers
The color version will replace the black and white edition now in print.

Pretty soon - no one will be able to order up the less expensive version. However, that PDF will remain available free as a public link. Anyone can share the link and spread it around, to infinity and beyond.

If you want extra copies sent (no charge), let me know in the next couple of days and I will send them. If you already received a copy, I have your address. Let me know how many you need. Gifts have already been given to send these books around.

Last night I ordered up 15 copies for one person.

I do not know the price of the printed color version, but both companies charge for color for the whole book, when any color is used inside. But the on-demand books are far less expensive than the old system.

The new version is large format to make it more attractive. Norma Boeckler has used that format a number of times with her books, and these illustrations are all hers.

Color PDF Will Be Free
When the color version is available, the PDF will be linked for free. Anyone may use and share that link. Print it up on your own if you wish.

The idea is not to make a bundle on the book, which is impossible, but to distribute it everywhere, as freely as possible.

The book was written for informed laymen. As one early reader said, much more could be explained. However, this is a start for anyone new to the topic. Justification by faith can be learned by using the best sources (KJV and the Book of Concord) and UOJ can be un-learned by examining the false claims and deceptions used by the synodical leaders.

WELS false teachers Mark Zarling and Forrest Bivens claimed in writing that God pronouncing the entire world forgiven - whether anyone believes or not - to be the Chief Article of the Christian Faith. However, here are two citations that say otherwise.

Who knows better - Zarling and Bivens?
Or Melanchthon, Luther, and the Formula of Concord editors?
One wise guy said, "I agree with Webber."
I said, "I agree with the Holy Spirit, St. Paul, and Luther."

"No matter what you did yesterday -- or failed to do -- and no matter what you will do tomorrow, God has forgiven you."
WELS's Meditations, March-May 2014, for Monday, 17 March 2014.

"That faith, which, as we considered in the preceding chapter, is wrought in us by God (Col. 2:12; Eph. 1:19), is firmly based upon the fact that we are justified, that our sins have been forgiven. Justification, just like its opposite, condemnation, is a judgment of God (Rom. 5:18, 19). It is a judicial act of God in which He, as the Judge of all, pronounces a verdict of acquittal upon all sinners."
Edward Koehler, Justification, Objective and Subjective

"Objectively speaking, without any reference to an individual sinner's attitude toward Christ's sacrifice, purely on the basis of God's verdict, every sinner, whether he knows it or not, whether he believes it or not, has received the status of saint."
WELS Kokomo Statements, JP Meyer, Ministers of Christ

"After Christ's intervention and through Christ's intervention God regards all sinners as guilt-free saints."
WELS Kokomo Statements, JP Meyer, Ministers of Christ

"When God reconciled the world to Himself through Christ, He individually pronounced forgiveness to each individual sinner whether that sinner ever comes to faith or not."
WELS Kokomo Statements, JP Meyer, Ministers of Christ

"At the time of the resurrection of Christ, God looked down in hell and declared Judas, the people destroyed in the flood, and all the ungodly, innocent, not guilty, and forgiven of all sin and gave unto them the status of saints."
WELS Kokomo Statements, taken from an earlier conflict over justification

“When Paul uses the word ‘reconciling’ here, [2 Corinthians 5:19] he clearly means that forgiveness of sins is really imputed to ‘the world.’"
Pope John the Malefactor, Lutheran Sentinel, 1996.

"This is very conveniently expressed by the terms objective and subjective justification. objective justification is the act of God, by which he proffers pardon to all through Christ; subjective is the act of man, by which he accepts the pardon freely offered in the gospel. The former is universal, the latter not."
The Calvinist Leonard Woods translating the Halle Pietist Geoge Knapp, 1831.

There is not one for whose sin and death he did not die, whose sin and death he did not remove and obliterate on the cross...There is not one who is not adequately and perfectly and finally justified in Him. There is not one whose sin is not forgiven sin in Him, whose death is not a death which has been put to death in Him...There is not one for whom he has not done everything in His death and received everything in His resurrection from the dead.
(Karl Barth,Church Dogmatics, IV, 1, 638, cited with approval, Carl Braaten, Justification, p. 140.)

"For God has already forgiven you your sins 1800 years ago when He in Christ absolved all men by raising Him after He first had gone into bitter death for them. Only one thing remains on your part so that you also possess the gift. This one thing is--faith. And this brings me to the second part of today's Easter message, in which I now would show you that every man who wants to be saved must accept by faith the general absolution, pronounced 1800 years ago, as an absolution spoken individually to him."
C. F. W. Walther, The Word of His Grace, Sermon Selections, "Christ's Resurrection--The World's Absolution" Lake Mills: Graphic Publishing Company, 1978 p. 233. Brosamen, p. 138. Mark 16:1-8.

We proclaim boldly, “Jesus Saved,” past tense, finished, certain.
Jon Buchholz, WELS Convention Essay

"The justification of the human race indeed also ocurred, in respect of the acquisition, in one moment, in the moment in which Christ rose and was thus declared righteous; but in respect of the appropriation it still continues till the last day."
Jay Webber, quoting Halle Pietist with approval, Intrepid Lutherans
GJ - The statements above represent what Jay Webber, Jon Buchholz, and the Synodical Conference leaders believe or at least pretend to believe.

The hymn for the Emmaus Conference will be - I'd Rather Have Rambach -

to this tune -

  1. I’d rather have Rambach with silver and gold;
    I’d rather be Pietist with riches untold;
    I’d rather have Rambach with houses and lands;
I’d rather be led by the Halle U. band.
    • Refrain:
And to be the king of a vast domain
      And be held in sin’s dread sway;
I’d rather have Rambach than anything
      The Gospel affords today.
  2. I’d rather have Spener with men’s applause;
    I’d rather be faithful to UOJ's cause;
    I’d rather have Rambach and worldwide fame;
I’d rather be true to Halle U's name.
  3. They're fairer than roses or sauerkraut;
    They're sweeter than Thrivent grants without doubt;
    They're all that my Old Adam needs;
I’d rather have Rambach and let him lead.

Valleskey is a good example of promoting UOJ
and Church Growth in the same book,
which Webber considers "weird."
The Synodical Conference does this inconsistently
but persistently.
