Posted on Monday, November 04, 2024 - 4:36 pm:       In this fiftieth anniversary year of the Seminex fiasco at CSL, one name to be remembered with thankfulness is Rev. Herman Otten. In the current issue of Christian News, a publication started by Pr. Otten, a 1974 article from Christianity Today is reprinted and outlines his activities during this crucial time period. Most familiar with Otten know that he was denied certification in the synod even by the conservative administration which prevailed in the struggle. As a student at CSL during the ‘60s he was one of the first voices to point to heresies being taught at the seminary. According to this article, he was ostracized for not following proper protocols in exposing heresies being taught. It seems he should have been thanked, not ostracized for the great service he rendered to the church. Can anyone, such as Pr. Preus, provide a more complete explanation of Herman Otten’s banishment from the LCMS? He served faithfully for many years in a congregation in New Haven, MO, but was never certified by the LCMS. It seems like a terrible injustice was perpetrated on this faithful servant. Jim Craig

Posted on Monday, November 04, 2024 - 5:34 pm:       My son Andrew is now pastor of Trinity Lutheran Church in New Haven, Missouri where Pastor Otten served for many years. Rev. Otten published a multivolume "Christian News Encyclopedia" several years ago that would give you all the information you need about how he was blackballed out of the LCMS. Here is the web address for Christian News: https://www.christiannewsmo.com/ The short story is that he made public what he was taught in the classroom at the St. Louis seminary. The seminary argued he had no right to do that, and he argued he did. The matter was adjudicated and Otten won, but they didn't let him in. He had many supporters and many critics. He was a bold confessor of God's truth, a good husband and father, and a faithful pastor. Yes, he was mistreated by the LCMS, but he was not embittered by it. He just kept on confessing until he died. A good example for us to follow. Rolf David Preus

On LutherQueasy - Rolf Preus, D.D. (Doctor of Dogma) Exommunicated His Father, Quensted, Luther, St. Paul, and Jesus

My favorite quotations against Rolf's Justification without Faith are from his father's Justification and Rome, a book he failed to mention in his North Dakota Fracking Lectures. He wowed them in Williston, but the Judgment Seat is a different venue altogether.

Rolf Preus fulminating on LutherQueasy:

"Denying...objective justification [is a] heterodox position, not to be tolerated in the church of God, much less excused and defended...To deny objective justification is intolerable. Anyone who denies...objective justification...is heterodox and should be marked and avoided according to Romans 16:17..."

Quensted:
"The immediate effect of faith is the remission of sins, adoption, justification."

Is it not enough to weary Missouri, Rolf? Must you also weary the saints of old, who clearly taught with Paul and Jesus - Justification by Faith.

The blind guides of Missouri, WELS, the Little Sect, and the CLC (sic) have energized my attention to their errors and the remedies to their falsehoods.

The Faithless Want to Lecture Us about Faith. Misdirection in the Sam Huber Lectures

Here I Misunderstand - 
The Sam Huber Lectures in North Dakota

More than one person has noticed that the least able are trotted out to defend the creaky, sinking barge known as Objective Justification. Why not feature the men and women with the synodical honors and PhDs? But no - we keep hearing the dogmatics notes from seminary, endlessly repeating the same drivel from Pietism.

"It's all about the Benjies, brethren. I will teach y'all about fishing for funds, for only $100 a month."

One guess is that no one wants to be painted into the corner with synodical elections coming up. True, they never change anything for the better, but some hope to gain or retain power, perks, and the Benjies. Just remember what they say at the car factory - "It's all about the Benjies." Kudu Don Patterson can explain that timeless truth, for $100 a month contributed to his coaching business.

So let's talk about a topic they know nothing about - faith. The faithless opportunists, even smug about their supplies of snake oil,
will talk about faith, but only on their terms.

Notice that Rolfie One-Note lacks the courage to quote me verbatim and give the source. But - since no one else is skewering his claims - one must assume who the target is.

There is no "doctrine of subjective justification," because it is not taught (the meaning of doctrine) in the Bible, the Church Fathers, Luther, the Lutheran Reformation, or the Book of Concord. If anything, the early post-Concord theologians argued against the creeping Calvinism and Pietism of the OJ/SJ claims. This has been proven by Dr. Robert Preus, whose final book is studiously ignored by its supposed co-editor, Rolfie One-Note.

Also, there is no "doctrine of objective justification," just a leftover from late Pietism, which was heavily influenced by Calvinism. The idea of Pietism was to blend Lutheran and Zwingli-Calvin theology. From the General Synod to the Missouri Synod, the founders in America came from Halle Pietism or its subordinate branches.

OJ is Anti-Gospel, Rolfie, Not THE GOSPEL

Rolfie One-Note would have us understand that universal forgiveness and salvation - without faith - is THE  GOSPEL. Moreover, God has declared this as a judgment (the meaning of justification) but in a way so mysterious that fanatical adherents cannot pin down when this happened or where this gem is revealed. Yay, more than a gem - it is the Diamond of OJ (WELS).

 The zircon of OJ fools those with no knowledge of the Scriptures and no spiritual discernment.

Rolfie One-Note wants to trade the Biblical concept of faith for trust in the false doctrine of Universalism. Since OJ is universal forgiveness and salvation, OJ is the Anti-Gospel.

The Preus clan and its devoted camp followers want to demand all the time - "What is the object of faith?" Their answer is "The Absolution of the World - without faith." 

They are like the car repairman who said, "Trust me. Your car needs all these repairs." I took down notes and asked for a response from a certified repairman, who said, "He does not know what he is talking about! Nothing he says is correct."

Rolf Really Needs To Study His Father's Book, But He Should Start with the Large Catechism

Posted on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 - 10:22 am:       I should also point out that Jackson has falsely stated numerous times that my father abandoned the doctrine of objective justification before he died. He appeals to his book, Justification and Rome, in which he set forth the historic Lutheran doctrine of justification using the terms that the Lutheran dogmaticians used. Jackson imagines that since the 17th century dogmaticians didn't articulate objective justification by using the same language as the 19th and 20th century theologians of the Synodical Conference, this must mean that the 17th century theologians taught a different doctrine than we who use the terms objective justification and subjective justification teach. He interprets my father setting forth the 17th century theologians' teaching in their own language as my father abandoning his life-long teaching of objective justification. What Jackson demonstrates is not that the 17th century Lutherans taught differently than the 19th and 20th century theologians of the Synodical Conference, but rather the rigidity of his own thinking. To understand theology, we must know how to express the same truth with different words. When Jackson accuses my father of changing his doctrine on this critical topic he bears false witness against him.

 Rolf Preus agreed with Chapter Five of Thy Strong Word, when I sent it to him. Shortly after, he said he had the entire book (when nobody did) and it was full of false doctrine. He was the one who asked for the chapter, and I sent it to him by email. Later he wanted the whole book. Ha!

Let me briefly rehearse Robert Preus on Justification. Robert posted a bizarre and foolish little essay endorsing Objective Justification, which Ft. Wayne bullies Cascione and McCain have cited to prove that Robert Preus taught OJ.

Robert Preus' Shift from Objective Justification
Rolf has a way of amusing people about his doctrinal blindness. The essay which he, Cascione, and McCain adore is pure OJ rubbish - laughable in every possible way. I wrote a critique of it, but I have lost the blog link for now.

At one point I had a Robert Preus typescript essay where he quoted OJ arguments and also the critiques which I copied from his last book, Justification and Rome.

I carefully read Justification and Rome and copied the citations from Quenstedt and Calov and Preus! which destroy OJ.  In his last work, which was probably much better before his sons mangled it, Robert was 99% Justification by Faith and 1% OJ.

 Bishop Heiser and the Pope of All Synods worked closely together - until they no longer did.

Rolf is constantly stirred up because I wonder about him being bedfellows with a self-appointed OJ/JBF bishop and the self-appointed dogma-shifting bishop for being bedfellows with Rolf.

Disagreeing with Rolf is not the same as slander, which he would know if he comprehended the Book of Concord. Nor do I consider his careful, nuanced mistakes as slander against me.

My only goal is to get Lutherans to study Biblical doctrine from the ruling norm (not from Stephan's pimp) - and from the ruled norm, the Book of Concord. (PS - It is not slander if it is true - Walther backed a promiscuous, syphilitic, abusive man as bishop. Recent history tells me that is one way to become a bishop.)

Readers can judge for themselves whether Justification by Faith or Objective Justification without Faith is Biblical. I would write less about OJ if the Stormtroopers did not obsess about it, offer absurd syllogisms to support it, and invent personal attacks to support their grace-filled ministries.
