Roland Bainton, Yale University

Roland Bainton was the star of the show.
He was delighted to get a photograph of my son's photo!

Once upon a time, Yale Divinity - and many history students - packed the rooms just to hear Roland Bainton speak. The school wired rooms just to hear him. Much later I found his very large painting in their main eatery. Later, a student in my church catechism class later to me, "You actually met him!?"

The class was impressed that the Lutheran insurance company used Yale's history star, Bainton, in their presentation.

A young lady leaned against my diploma on the wall.
Her sister said, "I want that!"
History matters,

The KJV Bible is an excellent source of wisdom for everyone. There is no substitute for regular reading, morning and evening combined. As one church member says, "Every morning and every evening."

Curiosity is bound to excite our brains by energy and repetition. It is good to remember that the KJV is the best and most successful, no matter what the others insist. The latest just keeps changing.

Babies love to hear their moms and dads. What better way to unite both parents, cuddle the child, and build a foundation!

Tatooed Yalie Girl Is Ashamed!
Tik-Tokrasy Alert

"And I'm sure ashamed as a Yaley Girl where at least they know I'm inked.
And I won't forget my Student Loan debt but at least I sure can think..."

The link is obscene, the old Greek saying for things that happen off the stage (scene, get it?) and not on the stage.

The About Mode - And Paul L. Holmer, Yale

Paul L. Holmer's lectures were branded into our minds, because he had so much to say in few words.

Gugenheim Fellow

One of Holmer's enduring statements about intellectual life was the 50-year cycle of the About Mode. Someone has a new, creative idea and everyone copies it for 50 years before they wear it out. The minor figures live and prosper in the About Mode. They have no ideas of their own.

McGavranistan provided the fields of opium.

I am a bit sad that I learned that bit of genius, because I have seen it repeated in my lifetime. I wondered how ELCA, WELS, Missouri, and the ELS could drool over the same terms and methods derived from Fuller Seminary and its copycats.

WELS and Missouri were supposed to be stalwarts of Biblical inerrancy, but they said exactly the same things at their conferences as I experienced first-hand at the LCA/ALC evangelism conferences and training. The Peter Drucker tapes I heard in the LCA were verbatim what WELS/LCMS taught.

The non-secret was that WELS/LCMS leaders were not only trained at Fuller and Trinity Divinity, but also jointly worked with ELCA, excited together about all they were gaining and tapping from AAL/Lutheran Brotherhood/Thrivent funds.

The founder of Church Growth, Donald McGavran, was a pro-abortion liberal Disciples of Christ missionary. His salesmen C. Peter Wagner and Win Arn were unflagging cheerleaders for the dull, verbose McGavran.

We never had transvestite church picnics in the LCA, but that is how WELS picks conference speakers.

All those who followed, adored, and praised McGavran, Wagner, and Arn were perpetually in the About Mode.

The late Waldo Werning, D.D. (honorary) went nuts when I challenged his denial that he ever went to Fuller Seminary. I read that fact from my Day-Timer. Likewise, the WELS Stooges - Bivens, Valleskey, Kelm, Olson, etc etc - denied it too.

Hunter got degrees from LSTC - ELCA and P!U! Fuller. That made him an expert for the LCMS and WELS.

The About Mode is the curse of Calvinism, the font of every modern heresy. The Calvinists do not accept that the Holy Spirit is always at work in the Word and never apart from the Word. They consider the Word of God a dead letter unless they make it reasonable, germane, and attractive. In other words, Rationalism is style of interpretation and the efficacy of the Word is their enema enemy.

No clever can unite the superficial marketing talk of the Calvinist Church Growth salesmen with the Means of Grace taught in the Scriptures.

As long as the red lens of Rationalism is over their eyes, they will see and hear Church Growth Principles! in every Word of the Bible, especially when so much is ripped from the Majority or Traditional text of the Greek New Testament.

And WELS never participated in Church Growth, said Wayne Mueller, CG expert, in the WELS magazine.

The Church Growth and NIV stooges usually deny being nursed on the Fuller sow's teats, but they hate anyone criticizing Holy Mother Sow. One Larry Otto Olson, WELS, is such a genius that he earned a precious D.Min. in Church Growth - I read his Fuller essay - and was never there! (See the Christian News article penned by another sycophant.)

The only way the True Church can grow is by adhering to the true Scriptures. There is no "about" to change, corrupt, or remove the Word from the Scriptures. The lazy, corpulent, alcoholic ministers need to go back to the Word of God and teach directly from the reliable Scriptures, the Majority Text itself or the King James translation.

Those leaders and the various mini-popes can see the crash coming. The question is whether they will bail out and repent or be removed from the True Vine (John 15:1ff).

Still No God or Man at Yale - A Very Long Essay on the Left-wing Radicalism of Yale University

Sterling Library is where we met Roland Bainton for a photo-op. "Still No God or Man at Yale" - an essay about Yale's extreme Leftism is linked here.

Harkness Bell Tower dominates the skyline.

 Harkness bell tower.

Yale Divinity School boasted these Lutheran professors - Paul L. Holmer, Nils A. Dahl, Sydney Ahlstrom, George Lindbeck, and (honorary Lutheran) Roland Bainton. One YDS dean swore he would never hire a Lutheran - "too conservative."

Don't Fail To Miss This Movie - The Tender Bar

Amazon Prime offered "free" one of their films, which was based on the memoir The Tender Bar, which was suggested reading when I took journalism classes online. I do not recommend the movie, which is poorly organized and slapped together. The author is working on Prince Harry's autobiography.

J. R. Moehringer is the Prince Harry ghost - you read it here first. I enjoyed the sections of his book where his mother said he had to go to Harvard or Yale, though his father was missing and they lived just above the poverty level.

Some of his bookstore friends said "Harvard is where someone knows everything about something. Yale is where they know something about everything."

The book friends said, "Yale is your biggest fear? Then you must battle that. Your fears ultimately define you."

That is why I always enjoy hanging around compulsive, life-long readers. Ranger Bob is one. All my friends are readers.

The movie skips the part about the JR graduating from a Scottsdale high school, not a run-down ghetto school. However, I understand his Long Island school is in a nest of highly valued public schools with the wealthy seeking houses there to benefit their children's education.

As most know, Scottsdale is one of the rich cities in the Phoenix cluster, so that high school was probably a good place from which to apply for a Yale education.

Nevertheless, JR's mother was the energy and strength behind accomplishing the impossible. He also benefited from his grandfather's stash of fascinating books and his own innate love of books.

I interviewed future Yale undergrads, who were all exceptionally educated and qualified to attend - but not all the qualified would be accepted. I got to write up whether they were future leaders or not. They all graduated from the private schools of St. Louis, so JR was up against tremendous odds in his application. Given his success in attending Yale, he was prepared for a career in writing.

I doubt whether the digital toy generation, which is 100% deployed in schools, will develop adequate thinkers or writers in the future. When I taught in a tiny Christian college, I was the only teacher to forbid all digital toys in class - and I had permission to hand the gadgets to the dean. The cries of pain were not from Juliet's apparent death in Shakespeare, but from the loss of their tweets, photos, and videos in class.

Several students said, "You stuck to your standards. You were the only teacher who did, and we had to listen." My class rosters were filled the moment they were posted, so the Gameboy faction had no power over me.

When the readers and writers of this generation go to their reward, there will be substance left in in literature, science, history, geography, and religious studies. We can see that now, where seminaries reject the Biblical languages and promote fraudulent Biblical texts. The seminaries want to blend Christianity with Eastern religion, just as their heroes Westcott-Hort did.

I thought Hort was the big Quack in that duo. No, Westcott was deep into teach resurrection as faith, not fact, and the Incarnation really being the god in every single person. He adored Hinduism and helped set up an institute in India to promote his ideas.

The ESV-RSV-NRSV-NIV Bibles, sold for profit and promoted by the Lutherans, are all based upon the cobbled together Westcott-Hort Greek New Testament text.

The problem is, there are not enough faithful clergy to learn this, teach this, and fight for the truth.

Yale University Shuts Down "Introduction to Art History."
Will Woke Students Graduate Knowing Anything?

At the Louvre, Mona Lisa was not pleased.
The famous "Introduction to Art History" is canceled.

Art History Department to scrap survey course

"Yale will stop teaching a storied introductory survey course in art history, citing the impossibility of adequately covering the entire field — and its varied cultural backgrounds — in one course.
Decades old and once taught by famous Yale professors like Vincent Scully, “Introduction to Art History: Renaissance to the Present” was once touted to be one of Yale College’s quintessential classes. But this change is the latest response to student uneasiness over an idealized Western “canon” — a product of an overwhelmingly white, straight, European and male cadre of artists.
This spring, the final rendition of the course will seek to question the idea of Western art itself — a marked difference from the course’s focus at its inception."

Theology Is the Grammar of Faith - Why UOJ, OJ, and SJ Are Evil Terms Used To Promote or Hide False Doctrine

Paul L. Holmer, Professor of Philosophical Theology
at Yale University,
posed with Little Ichabod on one trip to the campus.
Holmer used the expression - "Theology is the grammar of faith."
I tried to cover the main issues about Universal Objective Justification as a bad paroday of Justification by Faith.

UOJ terms - Objective Justification, Subjective Justification, General Justification - are the same as bad grammar and poor word usage in writing. The reason is - precise language conveys the correct concepts, or at the very least - the intended thoughts to be communicated.

Long ago, many of us assumed that Objective Justification was another word for the Atonement - Christ died for the sins of the world. In fact, before donning the bishop's mitre, Jim Heiser thought the same thing. Heiser was appalled by the actual use of Objective Justification, as quoted extensively and fairly in Thy Strong Word. Nevertheless, Heiser affiliated with the Rolf Synod, which escaped the Little Sect on the Prairie, but have returned to the ELS/LCMS, wagging their little tails behind them. They were and are gung-ho for UOJ.

Likewise, the Easter absolution of the world language, from Walther via Bishop Stephan and Halle University, is a dangerous flirtation with Universalism, whose teaching is almost the same. No better are the ridiculous Objective Justification and Subjective Justification terms, because OJ means "the entire world has been declared by God to be forgiven and saved  - without faith." See the LCMS 1932 Brief Statement on justification.

Likewise, Subjective Justification means agreeing that the absolution of the world - without faith - is Biblical. Subjective Justification does NOT mean Justification by Faith. So we have two sets of terms that are completely alien to:

  • The Scriptures
  • Luther
  • The Lutheran Reformation
  • The Book of Concord
  • The Post-Concord theologians - Gerhard, Leyser, Hunnius, Calov.
  • Modern examples in the LCMS and WELS.

How did the Reformation happen without those odious UOJ terms? and why must we constantly default to OJ and SJ?

The liberal mainline theologians simply dropped their SJ, just as Schleiermacher and Barth did - the entire world is forgiven and saved period. Requiring faith repudiates grace - yes, they really mean that and constantly warn against faith. The reason - they lack faith completely, so that is their subtle evasion, using the words of faith while repudiating faith in the Word of God. As my friend at Notre Dame said, "Faith without belief. They have a sentimental attachment to the Bible." (The sainted Charles Caldwell, Episcopalian conservative)

I used to grieve that I wasted so many hours studying modern theology and Roman Catholic theology at Notre Dame, but that is how I came to recognize UOJ as another form of apostate teaching.

Like the creatures of decay in the garden, the UOJ teachers hide under the rocks and logs whenever discovered. But they go back to their work.

Bivens and Valleskey taught UOJ an d Church Growth at Mordor Seminary in Mequon (WELS). Their deception or self-deception is so complete that Bivens called UOJ "the Chief Article of the Christian Faith."

  • Reactor: The Rev. Prof. Erling Teigen (ELS)

Our Righteousness before God

The theme of the 2015 Emmaus Conference proved a timely topic. “Our Righteousness Before God…Is Revealed in the Gospel. On this Righteousness Faith Relies.”
The lecture was given by the Reverend David Jay Webber in two parts.
  • Part I: Why Objective Justification Mattered to the Reformers
  • Part II: Why Objective Justification Matters to Us

***

GJ - As one person said, if Lutheran doctrine can be explained without OJ/SJ - why use the terms?

If OJ/SJ must be used, why did Luther, Melanchthon, Chemnitz and the Reformers fail to use those terms?

I would add the new extra calvinisticusm - If the terms came from the Calvinist translator of a Pietist theologian, how can they be used in the Lutheran Church without shame and remorse?

 WELS-ELS-LCMS-CLC (sic) today.

My professor at WLS, Otto Heick, a favorite of WELS pastors,
wrote that Spener was the first union theologian,
merging Lutheran and Calvinistic doctrine.
Almost all American denominations came out of Pietism. They all had a great affection for Spener, the first union theologian. The current WELS-ELS-LCMS allergy to the Book of Concord comes from the re-establishment of Pietism in those groups, as shown by their Pietistic cell groups (lay led share, care, Bible study, prayer, affinity, or prayer groups).

Those that use Pietistic methods also employ Pietistic doctrine.

Who Is Left Standing in Egyptology at Yale? From 2013.
Now Being Replayed at Fox News with Roger Ailes

John Darnell was considered the department's Indiana Jones.

The first Mrs. Darnell was actually a pioneer in the field
and was listed as a member of the Yale Egyptology faculty.

http://neveryetmelted.com/2013/02/02/scandal-strikes-yale-egyptology-department/

And who’s left standing?

When John Darnell agreed to a one-year suspension from the Yale faculty following numerous University policy violations, he left the Egyptology division of the Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations Department without a chair and with just one full-time faculty member — associate professor Colleen Manassa ’01 GRD’05, with whom he allegedly had the intimate relationship that led to his suspension.

Hat tip to John Brewer.

A little more eye makeup and she will look like one of the musician women on the walls of the Tomb of Nakht. Does her mummy know how she is behaving?

GOOSE GANDER

Nice way to get a promotion – sleep with the boss and get him fired.
If he violated the policy, why is she not also suspended? Presumably she knew about the policy, and the breaking of it, and did nothing to report it. I’m not sure that I see that much difference between what he did, and what she did. (Presuming that it was all consensual.)

The road to Despicable Me | Where They Are Now | Yale Alumni Magazine

The road to Despicable Me | Where They Are Now | Yale Alumni Magazine: "Cinco Paul ’86 was known at Yale for, among other things, playing the ukulele. He’s now a Hollywood screenwriter specializing in animated children’s films. Among his biggest hits are Horton Hears a Who—an adaptation of the Dr. Seuss book—and Despicable Me, about a supervillain who turns out to be not such a bad guy. His next movie, The Secret Life of Pets, opened this summer.

Spiritual Fathers in the Christian Church

Bainton took time to pose with our son twice,
and he helped me with my dissertation, offering to xerox pages for me.
Luther taught OJ, according to Jay Webber.
I guess he never read this book either.

My first interest was church history, so I was very happy to see Roland Bainton on campus at Yale so often. If he was talking, we were there.  He was a socialist and a rationalist, but that did not keep him from being kindly, considerate, and easy to approach. When we asked to visit him at Sterling Library, where he had his own office, he posed with our son the second time and showed off his bands for keeping his trousers out of his bike spokes.

Years before, Bainton posed with baby Marty, after our son broke up the lecture audience at the mention of Martin Luther's son - Martin. LI moved his arm and said "Eep" very distinctly. Bainton loved it as much as the others, who knew the baby was another Martin.

Paul L. Holmer posed with Little Ichabod in his office.
I took continuing education one year at Yale, just so I could hear Paul Holmer again. Mrs. Ichabod threw him a party when he had a one-semester sabbatical. It gave the students and faculty a chance to show him how much we appreciated him. The Left hated him, so some liberals took his class just to argue with him.

Last night I was searching for graphics and found a number of Holmer. I often go to the page for that graphic. I found a summary of his life work and realized even more what a genius he was, how he held that back to let his students thrive. He and Nils Dahl were always in church at Bethesda Lutheran; they even did Swedish services together,  Dall preaching in Swedish - with Holmer on the organ.

Nils Dahl was considered the best Biblical expositor of his time.
Dahl taught Biblical studies unlike the rest. He stymied the class by asking what we knew for certain about Jesus - in his Christology class. He answered, "The text! Do not teach what we do not know, but what we do know." He studied under the famous New Testament scholars of Europe, such as Mowinkel and Bultmann, but he shunned the theories for the text. He wanted us to study the famous scholars but use the text for research.

Meanwhile, the so-called conservative Lutheran professors want everyone to follow the official dogma, no matter how much that contradicts the Bible.
I met Stan Hauerwas at Augustana College, where he was not renewed,
took his advice for attending Notre Dame, and had him for a dissertation advisor.

Stan Hauerwas and Roland Bainton were my examples in publishing early and often. Stan grew up a bricklayer - helping his father - doing a lot of hard physical work, similar to what I did in my father's bakery. However, I had much better benefits and far less to lift.

Stan was the opposite of my official advisor, who was all talk and all forked-tongue. Stan acted tough but he made things happen, without asking or expecting thanks.

He is now the best known theologian in America. His publishing allowed him to be selected for a well known European lecture series and endless opportunities, such as working with the Kennedy family.

Sterling is the main library, where I found a 270 year-old book labeled,  when Yale wasjust the  Collegiate Institute at Saybrook.

This is the nave of Sterling Library - yes the nave.
Baintain said Sterling was a church where education was worshiped,
pointing to the figure of Knowledge above the desk.
