Stelmachowicz did say that he would poll the board on granting Preus’s request to attend the next meeting of the BHES on April 21–23 at Ann Arbor. Ironically, in a year and a half, the BHES allowed Walter A. Maier III to join the faculty in spite of his father’s newly acquired position as academic dean, and Briel went on to serve on the BHES, the board that had previously rejected him.
