Lutheran Seminary Fires President - Latini Responds

Yes, I was there, interviewed at the Philly Seminary
around 1981. Someone was already hired, so others were interviewed to meet the demands of HEW. Hence, it was called an HEW interview - a free trip to Philly.

Lutheran Seminary Fires President:

"Latini said via email that she was being scapegoated, and that United Lutheran was facing challenges from its recent creation from merging two Lutheran seminaries. "I had been eager to help this newly-combined organization to flourish," she said. "However, given the longstanding, historic divisions between the predecessor schools and what I believe to have been a politically based whisper campaign against me and other members of the board, it became clear that certain parts of the organization were not going to stand behind me and that I could not be effective as president. I have been scapegoated by an historically divided institution resistant to unification, and have been given little chance to respond to the accusations against me.""

GJ - Gettysburg was the original seminary - the General Synod. When that group became too anti-Lutheran, about half split off to form the General Council and establish its own seminary in Philadelphia.

Ironically, the General Synod came from the Pietism of Halle and that ideology led to the split. WELS also came from Pietism and returned to it via Fuller Seminary.

Bergandoff was an icon of the Augustana Synod, Augustana College, and higher education. He wanted the Midwestern seminaries merged at the U. of Chicago campus, which did take place but failed slowly in the decades following.

Conrad Bergendoff wanted the two seminaries united, and plans were made to do that in the LCA merger of 1962. However, that plan collapsed even though land was already purchased for the merger.

That division was always mentioned with some bitterness, even into the 1980s, so it is no surprise that it is still felt decades after that. I was told, "It is offensive to suggest that a Pennsylvania pastor is from the other seminary, so it is better to start by saying - where did you graduate?"

The reactions to Theresa Latini were so hysterical that some began wondering about Union and Harvard taking "tainted" students from United to finish their seminary degrees at those even-more-Left-wing institutions. The idea is to get Lutheran prerequisites done at an ELCA seminary (Do you hate Luther? Yes? Good. We can ordain you.) to be buffed and polished at Harvard or Union. (Are you an atheist? Yes? Good, you can graduate from our hallowed halls.)

Lutheran seminary education is truly pathetic these days, and I am including the anti-Lutheran ones in the ELS, WELS, and LCMS. The micro-mini ones are jokes not worth mentioning.

Lutheran seminary president ousted in controversy over past 'conversion therapy' work | PennLive.com

"Nothing to see here. Move on."

Lutheran seminary president ousted in controversy over past 'conversion therapy' work | PennLive.com:

"A prominent Lutheran seminary with two campuses in Pennsylvania is having a stormy moment of reckoning over the early-career, "conversion therapy" work by its first-year president.

That moment reached a climax at the United Lutheran Seminary Wednesday, with the school's board of trustees voting to end the Rev. Theresa F. Latini's tenure as president.

Latini, who answered some questions from PennLive via email Wednesday night, called the board's action unfair.

"I have been scapegoated by an historically divided institution resistant to unification," she wrote, "and have been given little chance to respond to the accusations against me."

United Lutheran Seminary is the modern-day result of a merger between longstanding seminaries in Gettysburg and Philadelphia. The jointure was approved in January 2016, and took effect this fall.

The controversy stemmed from Latini's work in the 1990s, according to this report on Philly.com, as director of One By One, a Pittsford, N.Y.-based organization that believed and taught that sexual orientation change is possible.

That information, the news site reported Wednesday, was made known to the seminary's board chairman during a presidential search process last year.

But the chairman, the Rev. J. Elise Brown, did not share that information with the rest of the board's selection committee, which subsequently hired Latini last summer.

As word of Latini's past leaked out in recent weeks, students, alumni, faculty and staff have pushed back against the presidential search process, the lack of transparency surrounding it, and related issues.

The pushback continued through a board "listening session" in Philadelphia last week, and culminated in Wednesday's actions."

This just in, as a letter to people in the Lower Susquehanna Synod:

March 14, 2018

Wednesday of the 4th Week in Lent

Dear partners in Christ:

The United Lutheran Seminary (ULS) Board of Trustees held a formal Board meeting on Wednesday, March 14, to address Seminary and Board leadership issues. As you may know, Bishop Dunlop is a member of the seminary board of directors and served as chair of the transition committee leading to the creation of the United Lutheran Seminary.

During today’s meeting, the Board voted to end Dr. Theresa F. Latini’s position as President of the United Lutheran Seminary. This decision was made based on the Board’s concern that the ongoing controversy surrounding her naming as President make it extremely difficult to overcome the issues related to trust as the president of this institution. With the understanding that there is much work to be done in healing, the Board recognized that her ongoing tenure would present a significant obstacle to moving forward. The primary obligation of the Board is to our Seminary and the perpetuation of its critical mission in training leaders for the church.

Also during today’s meeting, the board of directors of the United Lutheran Seminary elected Bishop James S. Dunlop as acting president of the seminary until an interim president is elected by the board of directors. Because of his rich history with the seminary, he feels a deep calling to serve the seminary in this important position at this critical time in the seminary’s short history. Offering full support, Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton encouraged Bishop Dunlop to accept this acting position, saying that he is the person best suited to fulfill this role at this time. A search for an interim president will begin in earnest. (For more information regarding the outcomes of the meeting, read today's Board of Trustees' statement here.)

To successfully carry out this role, Bishop Dunlop will be taking a temporary leave of absence from serving as our bishop. His responsibilities as our bishop will be adjusted and shared with staff. Bishop Dunlop said that he could agree to accepting this position because he has complete faith in our staff. He is confident our staff will be able to continue to perform their ministry tasks and to continue to carry out the mission of our synod.

Vice President Lucinda L. Bringman has called for a special meeting of the Synod Council on Thursday, March 22, 2018, at 6:30 p.m. The purpose of this meeting is in accord with *S8.58. of our synod constitution: “If the bishop is to be temporarily absent from the synod for an extended period, the bishop, with the consent of Synod Council, may appoint as acting bishop for such period an ordained minister of this church.” Until an acting bishop is appointed and confirmed by Synod Council, the staff will continue to function as it has whenever the bishop is away from this synod.

With the help of God and with requests for prayers, Bishop Dunlop has accepted this temporary position. We are a people whose story is centered in the death and resurrection. We are prayerful that out of these recent painful and difficult events will come new life. We invite your prayers for God’s light and guidance for healing, trust, wisdom, and compassion.

Yours in Christ,
Bishop James S. Dunlop
Vice President Lucinda L. Bringman
Secretary Thomas E. McKee

ALPB Forum Notes a Large Number of Resignations from the "United" Lutheran Seminary Board

"In 2018, we have received resignations from several Board members. Robert King and Nancy Dering Mock stepped down earlier this year due to personal reasons. Lisa Leber, Audrey Moody, Phillip Harrington and Elise Brown tendered their resignations in advance of today’s board meeting. Cheryl Meinschein, Charles Miller, Emma Porter and Janet Montelaro resigned immediately following the meeting."

This is mid-March; the "In 2018..." resignations of two Board members may seem to some to imply "oh, so long ago".  That 4 members resigned in advance of the reported Board meeting and 4 immediately after it, bringing the total "In 2018" to 10 Board Member resignations, is extraordinary and cautionary.  All linked to the Presidential issue?  What was the allegiance to prior institutions of these resignees before it became so "United"?  Were they asked to resign?  This appears on the surface to be a personnel matter, thus "closed session", yet a ton of backroom/backyard conversations and actions had to lead to this.

The search for a new President will be extremely difficult, not just because of the unforgiven transgression of the immediate past-President, but in the main because of the boiling cauldron of discontent that the stakeholders may perceive from the Board resignations.  The laundry must be cleaned now.  But, first and always, prayers for all involved, including those who never forgive.

Another Disgraceful Issue of Herman Otten's Christian News

WELS was slow in removing all their Hochmuth videos and graphics, but their speed and thoroughness have both increased. Save everything early or it will be gone in hours.

The March 19, 2018 issue of Christian News is another  long sales-pitch for Roman Catholic book sales. Randy Engel wants to sell us the news that many Catholic prelates are homosexuals, but Luther observed the people worshiped as gods those cardinals who were satisfied with a woman - 500 years ago.

The real news is WELS-LCMS going along with the ELCA-RC stampede out of the closets.

Wisconsin Lutheran College invited Weakland to give a public lecture there - and WELS lied about it, calling it "a private luncheon" as if that mattered. WLC invited the whole community and included lectures by Weakland's favorite priests, who doubtless were also gayer than lavender hose.

“Rembert Weakland quickly became one of the darlings of the liberal hierarchy of the United States” (823).

“A r c h b i s h o p Weakland was one of the first supporters of the forays of the Homosexual Collective into the Catholic Church in America. In Rueda’s The Homosexual Network published in 1982, Weakland’s role in assisting the Collective to advance its agenda in Am-Church is well documented.

“As reported by Rueda, Weakland’s pro-homosexual position including active support for pro-homosexual legislation is a matter of public record and his contribution to the Homosexual Movement has been acknowledged by all major national homosexual groups including the National Gay Task Force, Dignity and New Ways Ministry.

“Weakland’s notorious homosexual apologia, Herald of Hope. The Archbishop Shares: Who is Our Neighbor? which appeared in the Catholic Herald Citizen, the diocesan weekly for the Archdiocese of Milwaukee on July 19, 1980 is filled with vintage pro-homosexual Newspeak. Weakland employs pro-homosexualist Linguistics throughout the text and defends every tenet of the Homosexual Collective from ‘homosexuality is inborn and irreversible’ to ‘gay is good.’ The Archbishop consistently uses the term ‘gay people’ when referring to homosexuals. His essay undermines the Bible’s condemnation of sodomy and debunks the idea that homosexuals prey on young boys. The pro-homosexual article appeared the same year that Archbishop Weakland himself engaged in a homosexual affair with a layman” (824).

“According to writer-researcher Robert A. Sungenis, ‘Out of 36 priests who were named as child molesters in the archdiocese, 21 of them are still in the Milwaukee area and 6 of those have active assignments. Not one of the 36 has ever been so much as questioned, and no parishioners, except the victims, knew the names of these priests.

“While the Archdiocesan public relations department touted Weakland’s model program for handling clerical sex offenders, the Archbishop was shuffling offenders from parish to parish” (825).

WELS SP Schroeder said, "We didn't know!" but the arrest document for Hochmuth said Joel was caught before. Christian News buried the story of government agents raiding WELS headquarters and finding lots of child porn there, courtesy of Joel Hochmuth. The communications director got an easy plea, then re-offended. UOJ means never having to say you're sorry.

Could this CEO be a millennial Bernie Madoff? | New York Post:

"Ever wonder what a modern-day millennial version of Bernie Madoff might look like?

Could it turn out to be Elizabeth Holmes, the 33-year-old Silicon Valley sweetheart who is the chief executive of blood-testing firm Theranos?

Holmes founded the privately held firm at age 19 after dropping out of college like other more famous tech CEOs Steve Jobs, Bill Gates and Mark Zuckerberg."

I AM the Resurrection

John 11:20 Then Martha, as soon as she heard that Jesus was coming, went and met him: but Mary sat still in the house.
21 Then said Martha unto Jesus, Lord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.
22 But I know, that even now, whatsoever thou wilt ask of God, God will give it thee.
23 Jesus saith unto her, Thy brother shall rise again.
24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.
25 Jesus said unto her, I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?
27 She saith unto him, Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world.

This raising of Lazarus is the turning point in the mission of Jesus. Once this has happened, Jesus has completed His work. In other words, everything afterwards is inevitable. By raising Lazarus from the dead, in front of a crowd of local and Jerusalem people, Jesus confirmed His reputation as the Christ the Son of God. The rest of the Gospel concerns His death and resurrection.

There are several important details about this miracle. Jesus delayed coming, and this meant Lazarus was dead for days, as witnessed by his friends and famil

Another detail was the disciples' fear of consequences if they came near Jerusalem. Doubting Thomas expected to die because of the hostility of the religious leaders.

The fame of Jesus had gone forth across the land, so there was both the anticipation of His coming to see His friend, but also the crushing disappoint of Lazarus' death.

This disappointment brought out the clear confession of faith in Jesus -

24 Martha saith unto him, I know that he shall rise again in the resurrection at the last day.

When Jesus countered by saying "I am the resurrection, and the life: he that believeth in me, though he were dead, yet shall he live:
26 And whosoever liveth and believeth in me shall never die. Believest thou this?"

Jesus tested her faith. Was it simply faith in eternal life (which we see all over today) or faith in Him as The Resurrection and The Life?

She said, "Yea, Lord: I believe that thou art the Christ, the Son of God, which should come into the world."

This is a dominant theme in John's Gospel. First of all, He teaches the necessity of faith in Him as the righteousness of God. Secondly, He elicits a confession of faith in Him as the Savior. Both parts are important - His true nature and our confession of faith in Him, His divine mission and titles of majesty.

This is revealed to us through the Holy Spirit in the Word. I was recalling today about being kidded by a Methodist minister at a meeting. He mentioned our churches being close together. I said, "That important because Wesley has his experience of the warming of his heart after hearing Luther's preface to Romans read in church."

That was a turning point in Wesley's life because he read a clear confession of faith in Jesus through Luther's words. Even then there was great confusion from so many false teachers, but the clear truth struck Wesley. When there are so many confused voices, faith is not clearly taught. He knew he lacked a firm conviction of the truth, and this experience taught him that the Gospel Word has an effect (faith) and affect (he felt it within).

How strange that there are so many efforts to take us away from the very source of faith - the Gospel Word - and entertain us, inspire us, recruit us, or make us feel so guilty we do something really significant, like becoming vegan or joining a social justice warrior group.

Confusion and clamor are worse than ever before, so the need for the stability of the Word is even greater. We can see that where some like Gerhard and Luther have struggled with the Word and the issues of the day, they have spiritual treasure to share with us. The greatest concentration is found in the Gospels and Epistles. The Holy Spirit teaches us so much in them that we can resist any false doctrine and all the temptations of the Evil One.

If anything, the turmoil will increase as worldly wisdom becomes even more radical and more people are confused. But the Word who fashioned the universe is still within the hearts of believers to guide them to eternal life.

Gems Mined from The Sermons of Martin Luther, Volumes 1-8, Lenker Edition .
Initial Draft, PDF

We have been mining gems from the Sermons of Martin Luther, Lenker edition, volumes 1-8.

I just finished the draft of volume 8, so I decided to put all the gems together to see where we were for capstone volume - Gems Mined from the Sermons of Luther.

The final version will have illustrations from Norma A. Boeckler and page references as well.

Virginia Roberts has not only done heroic work in editing but has also picked out gems from each volume.

I think these will be worthwhile for sermons during Lent and Easter, so I am linking the initial PDF for everyone to download, save, and use. I have plans for making more available in the future.

Here is the link to Gems Mined from the Sermons of Martin Luther.

Board chair quits at Lutheran seminary amid controversy over new president

Skeptical Baby asks the tough questions.

Board chair quits at Lutheran seminary amid controversy over new president:

"The statement added, "Dr. Latini explained that she was not a reparative therapist. She did not lead ex-gay support groups or counsel teenagers to stop being gay or lesbian. She acknowledged that she presented basic ideas of a reparative therapist, Elizabeth Moberly, and believed this path was a valid option for those LGBTQ+ persons who wanted to live in chastity in singleness or fidelity in marriage between a man and woman, the Presbyterian standard at that time. She stated, 'I completely reject reparative therapy, and renounce it.'"

Despite these statements, the controversy is not only not dying down but is spreading to involve other divinity schools.

A joint letter from the Lutheran Students of Harvard Divinity School and the Union Theological Seminary noted that many Lutheran students at those two institutions finish their pre-ordination studies at United Lutheran (and previously did so at one of the two seminaries that merged). The letter said that this tradition has been "jeopardized by the past statements of President Latini and the recent, deceptive actions of the ULS board."

Latini's past support for trying to make gay people stop being gay needs to be taken seriously, the letter said. "So-called 'conversion therapy' is theologically and morally bankrupt, incredibly dangerous, and antithetical to the message of Jesus Christ," the letter added."

Therea Latini taught at ELCA's Luther Seminary, which made her an ideal Presbyterian candidate for the United Lutheran Seminary job. The board seemed to tick off the talking points without aligning their far Left agenda with her moderate Left agenda.

New seminary president's gay-conversion past catches school by surprise - Philly

"Bad optics. That's all I can say."

New seminary president's gay-conversion past catches school by surprise - Philly: "...she has never denied her affiliation with OneByOne, and had disclosed it to a seminary board member before the vote. He also said she has in recent years actively promoted inclusion for LGBTQIA+ people in the church.

Latini’s former leadership of OneByOne is not the only source of anger for many in the seminary community. They’ve also made clear their displeasure with the administration’s handling of the presidential selection process in 2017 and the secrecy shrouding it. Students, faculty and alumni first heard rumors of Latini’s past earlier this year, and the story circulated without an official statement from the school until last month."

Rest in Peace - Stephen Hawking.
He was given an honorary doctorate when I finished at Notre Dame. The audience was struck by his weakness as his nurse lifted his head to allow the stole to be put on his neck.
That was 1982.

Stephen Hawking dies aged 76 - BBC News:

"Stephen Hawking has died at the age of 76, his family has said.

The British physicist was known for his work with black holes and relativity, and wrote several popular science books including A Brief History of Time.

About the Author
About the Author – Egerton R. Young
…It was the comfort of the great apostle to the Gentiles that with a clear conscience he could say, “I have kept back nothing that was profitable for you,” and that when he knew that those among whom he had gone preaching the kingdom of God, would see his face no more, he could boldly “take them to record,” that he was pure from the blood of all men, and had “not shunned to declare all the counsel of God.” However materialists may oppose amid the thickening troubles of these ungodly days; however distasteful it may be to the carnal mind; however scorners may jest and sneer; the ambassador of God must boldly deliver unto the people, all that they have received of the Lord. – From Chapter 20.

“Egerton Ryerson Young was born at Smith’s Falls, Ontario, April 7, 1840. He was educated at the Normal School of the Province of Ontario, after having taught for several years, and in 1863 entered the ministry. Four years later he was ordained, and, after being stationed at the First Methodist Episcopal Church, Hamilton, Ontario, in 1867-68, was sent as a missionary to Norway House, North-West Territory. There he worked among the Indians for five years, and in 1873 went in a similar capacity to Beren’s River, Northwest Territory, where he remained three years (1873-76). In 1876 he returned to Ontario and was stationed successively at Port Perry (1876-79), Colborne (1879-82), Bowmanville (1882-85), Medford (1885-87), and St. Paul’s, Brampton (1887-88). Since 1888 he has been prominent as a lecturer on work among the American Indians, and in this cause has made repeated tours of the world. He has written about a dozen books.

More Luther - From Volume 8, The Sermons of Martin Luther

Fuller Seminary! Wheee.
Synod helps pay tuition.

41. Christians, however, though obliged to live among swine and to be at times trampled underfoot and rooted about, have nevertheless surpassing glory; for they can look up and intelligently behold their Lord and his gifts. They are not of the pen of swine intended only for slaughter; they know themselves children of God, adorned by him with gifts and graces not merely temporal. They are conscious that, having given them body and life — for these they realize are not of their own obtaining — he will also supply their further needs, providing for them forever.
Luther's Sermons, Volume 8,Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Greatness of God Unequaled

43. Regarding the baptizer — who may be a woman even — and the baptized, we certainly can see nothing wonderful. The humanity in the case does not effect any great work; the work is wrought by him who is God, Lord and Spirit. It is he who gives to the office power and greatness above that of all emperors, kings and lords, however inferior the instrumentality — the occupants of the sacred offices. By these ministrations souls are won from the devil, snatched out of hell and transformed into saints blessed forever. Person and office may be apparently inferior, but the office is of God and God is no inferior being. His greatness cannot be equaled by a hundred thousand worlds. He accomplishes things incomprehensible to the world and impossible to angels. The combined efforts of all creation could not produce baptism. Were the world to unite in baptizing an infant, the infant would receive no good therefrom unless God the Lord commanded the deed.
Luther's Sermons, Volume 8,Tenth Sunday after Trinity

Glory Which Every Preacher May Claim

9. It is a glory which every preacher may claim, to be able to say with full confidence of heart: “This trust have I toward God in Christ, that what I teach and preach is truly the Word of God.” Likewise, when he performs other official duties in the Church — baptizes a child, absolves and comforts a sinner — it must be done in the same firm conviction that such is the command of Christ.
Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

If the Doctrine of Faith in Christ Be Left Out…

In short, there can be no New Testament preached if the doctrine of faith in Christ be left out; the spirit cannot enter into the heart, but all teaching, endeavor, reflection, works and power remain mere “letters,” devoid of grace, truth, and life. Without Christ the heart remains unchanged and unrenewed. It has no more power to fulfill the Law than the book in which the Ten Commandments are written, or the stones upon which engraved. “For the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.”
#36, Twelfth Sunday after Trinity

Efficacy and Bearing Fruit

20. Not only preachers, but all Christians, should constantly entreat the God who grants knowledge to grant also efficacy; should beseech him that the Word may not pass with the utterance, but may manifest itself in power. The prevailing complaint at present is that much preaching obtains, but no practice; that the people are shamefully rude, cold and indolent, and less active than ever, while at the same time they enjoy the strong, clear light of revelation concerning all right and wrong in the world. Well may we pray, then, as Paul does here. He says, in effect: “You are well supplied: the Word is richly proclaimed to you — abundantly poured out upon you. But I bend my knees to God, praying that he may add his blessing to the Word and grant you to behold his honor and praise and to be firmly established, that the Word may grow in you and yield fruit.”
Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

Where the Spirit Is, Faith Must Obtain

36. A third answer to our enemies is: We are certain that wherever the Word of God is proclaimed, the fruits of the same must exist. We have the Word of God, and therefore the Spirit of God must be with us. And where the Spirit is, faith must obtain, however weak it may be. Though visible evidence may be lacking, yet inevitably there must be some among us who daily pray, while we may not be aware of it. It is reasonably to be expected that our enemies should judge erroneously, because they look for outward evidences of Christianity, which are not forthcoming. The Word is too sublime to pass under our judgment; it is the province of the Word to judge us. The world, however, while unwilling to be judged and convicted by us, essays to judge and convict the Word of God. Here God steps in. It would be a pity for the worldly to see a godly Christian, so God blinds them and they miss his kingdom.
Sixteenth Sunday after Trinity

Creating Discord - Walther's UOJ and Election without Faith

18. One of the wickedest offenses possible to commit against the Church is the stirring up of doctrinal discord and division, a thing the devil encourages to the utmost. This sin usually has its rise with certain haughty, conceited, self-seeking leaders who desire peculiar distinction for themselves and strive for personal honor and glory. They harmonize with none and would think themselves disgraced were they not honored as superior and more learned individuals than their fellows, a distinction they do not merit. They will give honor to no one, even when they have to recognize the superiority of his gifts over their own. In their envy, anger, hatred and vengefulness, they seek occasion to create factions and to draw people to themselves. Therefore Paul exhorts first to the necessary virtue of love, having which men will be enabled to exercise humility, patience and forbearance toward one another.
Seventeenth Sunday after Trinity

The Christian Treasure

14. The Christian has indeed inestimable treasure. In the first place he has the testimony of the Word of God, which is the word of eternal grace and comfort, that he has a right and true conception of baptism, the Lord’s Supper, the Ten Commandments and the Creed. In addition, he has the sure refuge of God’s promise to deliver us from every trouble in which we shall call upon him, and to give us, as he promised by the prophet Zechariah 12:10, the Spirit of grace and of prayer. And the Christian, by virtue of his enlightened understanding, can wisely discern what are good works and what callings are pleasing to God; on the other hand, his judgment is equally true as to unprofitable and vain works and false services. Before, we had not this wholesome knowledge. We knew not what we believed, or how we prayed and lived. We sought comfort and salvation in self-devised trivialities, in penances, confessions and satisfactions, in self-righteous works of monkery and in obedience to the commands of the Pope. We believed such works to be fully satisfactory and, indeed, the only things that were holy; the pursuits of common Christians we considered worldly and dangerous.
Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity

Whose Fault?
28. And so Paul, when here extolling the Corinthians, has not an eye to the contentious, the Epicureans, or to those who give public offense, as the man that “had his father’s wife;” but the apostle looks to the fact that a few remain who have the pure Word of God, faith, baptism and the sacrament, though some hypocrites be among them. Because of these few — and few indeed there may be — we recognize the presence of that inestimable treasure of which the apostle speaks. It is found as well where two or three are gathered together as with thousands. Neither the Gospel nor the ministers nor the Church is to be blamed that the multitude miss this treasure; the multitude have but themselves to blame, for they close their ears and eyes.
Eighteenth Sunday after Trinity

The Devil Builds His Taverns and Kitchens

2. Well, we cannot altogether prevent inharmony in the Church. Paul says (1 Corinthians 11:19), “For there must be also factions among you, that they that are approved may be made manifest among you.” Wherever the Word of God has a foothold, there the devil will be. By the agency of his factions he will always build his taverns and kitchens beside God’s house. So he did at first, in Paradise. In the family of Adam he entrenched himself, establishing there his church. And such has been his practice ever since, and doubtless will ever be. He who takes offense at differences in the Church, who when he sees any inharmony at once concludes there is no Church there, will in the end miss both the Church and Christ. You will never find any congregation of such purity that all its members are unanimous on every point of belief and teaching and all live in perfect harmony.

Luther on the Seditious Leaders and Self-Secure Spirits

Ah, these seditious leaders and other self-secure spirits are poor, miserable people, who know nothing at all of this conflict! They drown in their own imaginations, and think they are perfect. And some of them are so shameless and without fear as to blaspheme, saying that God himself could not take their virtue from them. The devil simply strengthens them in these thoughts, and hardens them the more. This very thing is a sign that they do not yet know the devil; they are already blinded and taken captive by him, so that he can ruin them when he pleases.

And in the same sermon -

82. When the devil plagues and assails thee with his manifold temptations, refer him to Christ, with whom to dispute about the severe temptations, the death struggle, the anguish of hell, etc. Comfort thyself that thou art one of a great company of sufferers, past present and future. O beautiful, glorious company! All under one lord and head, who took from the devil his power and hellfire. In short, thy affliction cannot prove so great that thou wilt not find it paralleled in the lives of the apostles, prophets, patriarchs and all the saints, especially of Christ himself; with whom, if we suffer, let us not doubt, says Paul, that we shall “be also glorified,” Romans 8:17.
