Hobbling Down Nostalgia Lane

Norma A. Boeckler's cover for the book.

Yesterday, I produced, directed, and starred in a 25-minute live streaming summary of Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant. The copy I displayed was the first edition, 1993, almost 30 years ago.

Northwestern Publishing House accepted CLP and put it on the printing schedule. Suddenly, they said in a letter that they would not print it until I changed my attitude. That book had to be published by me, and yet NPH heavily promoted it. Seminary professor Brug told seminarians it was a good book. I was already out of WELS at that point.

Designed and illustrated by Norma A. Boeckler

Earlier, NPH published Liberalism, Its Cause and Cure. WELS punished NPH for letting that loose, and it was deliberately delayed. When I gave the last chapter as a conference paper, Kovaciny threw the xeroxed Means of Grace chapter and carried on, but no more than Wally Oelhafen and Fred Adrian, the mission dopes. I needed a final chapter for the book, and those tantrums clinched the essay for that role. Liberalism had at least three NPH printings.

Here is a classic Oelhafen-Adrian blurted statement shouted to the conference pastors - "Just because we went to Fuller Seminary doesn't mean we agree with their doctrine." (Paraphrased) Later, Adrian was kicked out of the ministry for cause, and DP John Seifert welcomed him back in. Kovaciny went to Russia after losing an argument with a utility pole.

I self-published Thy Strong Word, 2002, but switched to Lulu and Amazon after that. Print on demand seemed to be quite an advance at the time, a great way to save money and get books printed faster.

Now an inexpensive web camera and the Internet will get a message across the world. Broadcasts do not replace the written or spoken word, but they provide another medium for weal or woe.

Readers love the full color artwork inside the books. That used to cost a fortune.

“Only one, true Christian Church exists, and that Church is made up of all those who sincerely believe in Christ as their Savior. The true Church, then, is invisible, including members of all denominations, even those without a denomination or formal affiliation. Only God can judge the heart, so one cannot judge whether a person has saving faith from his membership in one denomination or another.” — Gregory L Jackson

We are pleased to offer this book with the express approval of the author.

Without going into a lot of reference works, try the chapter 6 "Doctrines Concerning the Virgin Mary" in Gregory Jackson's Catholic Lutheran Protestant, pages 193-229, and on pages 225 is a handy comparison chart, showing "Doctrine," "Church Action," and :Accepted By."

Free, public domain - at this link.
Someone could easily look up all the references to Mary by downloading the PDF and using control-f "Mary" and "virgin" for a secondary search.

Giving Away Books and Roses

Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant is apparently
the only book of its kind,
comparing three major confessions of faith.

I drove to headquarters to have a meeting with the supervisor of the area I teach - very basic English. I brought along - for show and tell - one volume of The Sermons of Martin Luther. This very kind lady is Roman Catholic, which set off a discussion about Luther versus the Church of Rome. However, the discussion changed when I mentioned how I wrote Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant - primarily so married couples who were Catholic/Lutheran would understand each other's background.

Once again, I repeated my observation that I did not know what priests and pastors were saying to accomplish this, but - "Catholics cannot wait to marry Lutherans and vice versa." She laughed and said, "Like my uncle."

Then she said, "That book. That is the book I want." So I am sending two copies of Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant. Maybe three. Books last and they get shared, too.

That is how all my publishing efforts work. I give away books and everything else written, by blogging and Ustreaming. When people want a quantity of books, I sell them at the author's cost. My supervisor could not believe a huge book like The Sermons of Martin Luther could be printed for such a low cost. Yes, publishers think they are minting money, which is why they want new hymnals all the time.

Veterans Honor is the perfect red rose -
if only the stems were stronger.

Free Roses
Everyone is delighted with roses. I have taken bunches various places, only to see the staff divide them up and take individual ones for their own desks. That prompted two doctors to talk about God's Creation. As one said to me, "And I mean six-day Creation, too." I said, "But of course. Creation by the Word of God. John 1:3." He went to seminary, so he knew what I was saying.

My class last night requested a bunch for the fragrance of the petals. One is planning roses for her engagement and marriage, and she was saving dried petals for the lingering perfume. I began growing roses at the time growers were being challenged to focus more on fragrance. Now there are few with little or no fragrance, many with enough to fill the room.

One student wanted to pay me for roses, and I said "No, I give them away, no matter how many." That works out well. Nothing else promotes a feeling of well being so efficaciously and quickly. One of the four Esses brought over two of my vases. "Mom finally took out the last rose." Our grizzled veteran takes roses to his mother's grave, so he often gets them as well. When he calls my yard a jungle, I ask him how many roses he has.

Easy Does It turns into various orange colors,
more productive than any other rose I have grown.

Roses start conversations in the neighborhood. Every single person is astonished that roses thrive without toxic chemicals. "I just follow the principles of Creation."

Rose season for 2018 has just begun. I will finish installing the collars around them for winter protection. I am already pacing off positions for the most productive new roses. My list includes -

  • Easy Does It
  • Mr. Lincoln
  • A strong, white rose - one that is good in a vase.

The white John Paul II is photogenic
and looks great initially when cut,
but does not last in the vase.

My Classmate - A Roman Catholic - Former Mayor of Stephan's Perryville, Missouri - Ordered a CLP for Herself and One for an LCMS Pastor

My Moline classmate, Debbie Gahan, served as the first lady Mayor of Perryville, Missouri, the town established by Bishop Martin Stephan's order - instead of starting with a much better deal in St. Louis, better land for a better price.

We are looking forward to seeing Debbie at the Moline reunion - our 50th anniversary class reunion - the Class the Stars Fell On.

She hastened to order two signed copies of Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant - one for her and one for LCMS Pastor Thomas Handrick.

Debbie Mitchell Gahan and I were in band, chem-physics,
and who knows what at Coolidge Junior and Moline Senior High.
Our group was creative, fun, and funny.

Poor Little David Becker - Logic Escapes Him.
Christian News Going Out with a Whimper

David Becker is offended that I use Marquart and Otten quotes on the back of the last two editions of
Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant.

He failed to mention that Otten orders CLP regularly - and has - ever since the book was published.

Becker reminds me of WELS calling me a "false teacher" and selling two of my books. Below is their current catalog online.

Catholic Lutheran Protestant

A Doctrinal Comparison of Three Christian

Author: Gregory Jackson

"The purpose of this book has been to provide a way for people to understand, study and discuss three distinctive Christian confessions." The book is divided into three sections: Part One, Areas of Agreement; Part Two, Areas of Partial Agreement; and Part Three, Complete Disagreement. Papercover. 299 pages.
Catalog Item Number: OL-154450
Price: $ 22.00
Quantity:

Otten was offended by the graphic, with him posing as the Pope. I was offended that he promoted a vicious, lying book against Martin Luther for one of his Reformation issues.

Otten, who always demands answers when he emails LCMS officials, would not answer why he was selling that garbage. I emailed him several times. No answer. Finally, he responded to someone else, "I sell to both sides of the issue."

Likewise, he promoted and sold Marquart's essay against Church Growth - and published many of mine, which were free. But Otten gave David Valleskey a rave review for We Believe - Therefore We Speak, and sold it as a doctrinal book. The Valleskey book is a tangle of Universal Objective Justification and Church Growth methods.

Jackson to Otten - "Did you read the last half of the Valleskey book?"

Otten, "No."

Walther's qualifications as the Great Prophet of All Christendom are this:

  • He graduated from a rationalistic university with a bachelor's degree.
  • He participated in Pietistic groups and followed two Pietistic gurus.
  • He became the enforcer for Bishop Martin Stephan, STD, his second Pietistic leader.
  • He looked the other way when Stephan pursued young girls and made them his sex slaves, preferring his main one at the spa to his wife, who walked there to help him with his disease.
  • He led the group that stole Stephan's gold, land, and books, and kidnapped the bishop at gunpoint, because the leader's syphilis became known among his female groupies.

Otten continues to repeat the Missouri Synod myths that have deceived so many, clinging to the dogmas of Walther rather than the Biblical teaching of Martin Luther.

Consider Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant - To Celebrate the Reformation.
Ideal for Adult and Confirmation Classes,
And for Lutheran-Roman Catholic Marriages

Available from Amazon here, and also as a Kindle e-book here.
To get the printed copy at the author's cost, email me

When I was leaving the LCA, I attended
lectures by Kurt Marquart and Robert Preus.
My wife and son were also on the campus at that time.
I began rewriting Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant some time ago, mostly to improve the style and remove typos. The format and content are the same, except Norma Boeckler has added more of her artwork to the book. She designed the beautiful cover.

This is the third edition. One advantage of using Amazon is the lowered cost of the books, compared to Lulu (where people had to wait for discounts). The author's cost is only $6, which I charge when people want multiple copies sent to them to use as gifts or for church study. Since I am under the pan-Lutheran ban for being a Lutheran, I do not expect great sales, which depend on publishing house distribution and promotion. Instead, it is part of our congregation's evangelism and doctrinal study efforts.

The low author's cost makes it easy to send books to various libraries and individuals. The initials after my name stand for Every Day Low Prices, which I borrowed from Walmart.

The retail cost is much higher because Amazon keeps a chunk of it - only $5 is included for profit.

Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant has been used all over Lutherdom - for study, for adult classes, and for confirmation. Christian News (LCMS) and Northwestern Publishing House (WELS) have both promoted the book. Professor John Brug suggested it to his students.

Another reason for re-publishing the book is the Kindle edition. If people want to search a book and quote it with the citation, e-books are great. I use them all the time for gardening. Kindle books are portable for all devices.

I wrote the book to explain differences and agreements among Catholics, Lutherans, and Protestants. I used the vast resources of a Vatican owned seminary in Columbus, Ohio to verify Roman Catholic doctrine. My database of quotations was useful in documenting what denominations taught - in their words.

Our family has always sought out opportunities to learn from others, so this book is a bridge between the old days of Seminex and Vatican II in the old days and our current doctrinal situation.

Some figures I have known, met, heard speak, or studied under include:

and new covers for the book.
