Not Afraid of a Real Education
Professor Emeritus Rudolph Honsey passes away | Bethany Lutheran College

Professor Honsey was always mentioned with great affection. He passed away some months ago, but I wanted
to note his service in education.

Professor Emeritus Rudolph Honsey passes away | Bethany Lutheran College:

"S.C. Ylvisaker, Bethany’s president at the time, needed new faculty members to teach the growing numbers of students on the Bethany campus. More and more young men were returning from serving in the United States military during World War II and were looking for educational options. Ylvisaker recognized Honsey’s talent and personality and thought it would be a good fit for the Bethany campus. So, before Honsey could deliver his first sermon at a Synodical Conference Lutheran church, Ylvisaker convinced him to accept a temporary call to teach at Bethany. The call was made permanent in 1946. During his years in academia at Bethany, Honsey also studied at University of Chicago, Mankato State College, University of Minnesota, University of Wisconsin where he earned a master of arts in Scandinavian Studies in 1955, and Brandeis University where he earned a master of arts in Mediterranean Studies in 1962. "

Jack and Robert Preus were both at Bethany,
and Robert left his book collection to Bethany's library.

 Carl Manthey-Zorn - devil's horns?
or hookem Longhorns?

Someone asked about Zorn (German for anger), and I looked him up to see how UOJ he was. Given that people sighed like love-struck teens over his name, I guessed he was.

Doug Lindee, WEL-DONA layman, wrote this about Zorn and SynCon history, 2010.

Here is a 2010 post by WEL-DONA Pastor Paul Rydecki - Something To Chew On, citing and linking the mixed up essay by Marquart that Jay Webber adores.

Rydecki's was mercifully short, but both suffer from the same SynConferenceCentric thinking. Everything starts with Walther and his fellow Pietists, but absent their criminal acts in Dresden and America. There follows a verbose history of conflicts started by CFW Walther, BA, and his disciples, examined in obsessive detail.

This navel-gazing approach, which is normative in WELS-ELS-LCMS, displaces the Scriptures, the Book of Concord, Luther, and Chemnitz. Worst of all, the SynCon jabberboxes are like all Enthusiasts - they do not trust the efficacious Word but want everyone to venerate their endless supply of words, a veritable volcano of vowels.

We should not speculate on Election (where is that statement found? Bueller, Bueller, anyone, anyone?) so they spend a century or more speculating on Election.

And they haul out their experts on Synodical Conference history, which makes people wonder, "Have Lutherans fashioned their own Babylonia Talmud, with layer upon layer of interpretation?" Now let us study the Intrepids on Marquart on the Synodical Conference interpretation of Walther, who kelmed Stephan. (Oops, cannot mention except to say the bishop deserved to be robbed and needed to be kidnapped.)

The book cover never designed by Matt the Fatt.

The answer to Justification is found as the summary of Romans 4, by itself a brilliant, clear lesson on Abraham as the first one Justified by Faith in the Savior, making him the Father of Nations and the example of faith.

Here is the summary statement about Romans 4 -

Romans 4 What shall we say then that Abraham our father, as pertaining to the flesh, hath found?
For if Abraham were justified by works, he hath whereof to glory; but not before God.
For what saith the scripture? Abraham believed God, and it was counted unto him for righteousness.
Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt.
But to him that worketh not, but believeth on him that justifieth the ungodly, his faith is counted for righteousness.
Even as David also describeth the blessedness of the man, unto whom God imputeth righteousness without works,
Saying, Blessed are they whose iniquities are forgiven, and whose sins are covered.
Blessed is the man to whom the Lord will not impute sin.
Cometh this blessedness then upon the circumcision only, or upon the uncircumcision also? for we say that faith was reckoned to Abraham for righteousness.
10 How was it then reckoned? when he was in circumcision, or in uncircumcision? Not in circumcision, but in uncircumcision.
11 And he received the sign of circumcision, a seal of the righteousness of the faith which he had yet being uncircumcised: that he might be the father of all them that believe, though they be not circumcised; that righteousness might be imputed unto them also:
12 And the father of circumcision to them who are not of the circumcision only, but who also walk in the steps of that faith of our father Abraham, which he had being yet uncircumcised.
13 For the promise, that he should be the heir of the world, was not to Abraham, or to his seed, through the law, but through the righteousness of faith.
14 For if they which are of the law be heirs, faith is made void, and the promise made of none effect:
15 Because the law worketh wrath: for where no law is, there is no transgression.
16 Therefore it is of faith, that it might be by grace; to the end the promise might be sure to all the seed; not to that only which is of the law, but to that also which is of the faith of Abraham; who is the father of us all,
17 (As it is written, I have made thee a father of many nations,) before him whom he believed, even God, who quickeneth the dead, and calleth those things which be not as though they were.
18 Who against hope believed in hope, that he might become the father of many nations, according to that which was spoken, So shall thy seed be.
19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sarah's womb:
20 He staggered not at the promise of God through unbelief; but was strong in faith, giving glory to God;
21 And being fully persuaded that, what he had promised, he was able also to perform.
22 And therefore it was imputed to him for righteousness.
23 Now it was not written for his sake alone, that it was imputed to him;
24 But for us also, to whom it shall be imputed, if we believe on him that raised up Jesus our Lord from the dead;
25 Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.

5 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:
By whom also we have access by faith into this grace wherein we stand, and rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

Sassy Sue's Goodnight Routines

I post about our three-legged wonder dog Sassy Sue so her foster parents can read the post. I promised photo updates for them, and I know they look for them, from time to time.

One of the Fox Valley sourpuss pastors complained, "He even writes about his dog." If one of them would visit a library or bookstore, it would become apparent that writing about dogs is just as popular as reading about them.

Sassy has an unusual bedtime routine. We are with her about 22 hours a day, and she is a real talker. She makes a lot of different noises and loves to have fun with us.

Sassy is half Red Healer and half German Shepherd.
She goes through the vocal range of both, and the super-smart independent nature of both breeds.

Sassy Initiates
Sometimes, she comes up to us on the bed and taps me with her paw, grinning. That is my signal to pet her and tell her what a great dog she is, how many people love her. Then she turns to Chris and does the same thing. Settling down, Sassy falls asleep soon after.

Sassy lost her leg from a horse kicking her and her family's subsequent neglect. The rescue society provided her operation and recovery time.
Everyone loves her gentle, loving face.

Bad Staff Evals - Sassy Is Upset
On other nights Sassy begins making low, complaining sounds. "What's up with Sassy?" I tell Chris, "Staff evaluations are in, and they are not good." Chris says, "Did we fail you again, Sassy? Miserable howls follow. So we go through things we should have done - food, walk...Frosty Paws. The mention of Frosty Paws ice cream for pets has Sassy barking loudly. Apologies follow and I promise to get the Frosty Paws.

Sassy is kind enough to show us where the food is, so she points with her nose - out the door toward the kitchen, the path to Frosty Paws. I use ordinary ice cream, and Sassy gets one teaspoon per night. But this is a non-negotiable demand, as they say, and it must be delivered for a night's sleep.

Her Head on the Bed
Another way Sassy goes to bed is to get her head under my hand, grinning at me as I pet her. She keeps her head flat on the bed and enjoys her head being stroked. We work over her ears, which really delights her. We also discuss her day and the friends she has made. She loves to hear Sassy stories and gets quite animated about her best friends.

Every dog at the dogpark was jealous of Sassy's fame
with the ball and her retrieval of it, placing it in my hands.
We sang a song about that, and she howled for the chorus.

Must Make My Bed for the Night
Sassy may drop off to sleep in one corner of the bed, but she often needs to scratch up a nest for the night. She scratches on covers with manic glee. We keep a layer of thick old covers there for that purpose. Pillows may fly and blankets may fall off. Sometimes we stop her, but then she starts over. Sometimes she just stops and falls down in place.

Our granddaughter held this pose while I got the camera,
but Sassy came into the frame for the laughs.
No one was hurt.

Making Us Laugh Out Loud
Sassy's funniest moves have developed over the years. She decided to scratch on an antique table to get my attention. Once she realized how funny I thought it was, she scratched and grinned me. That gesture meant, "I need something from you."

When the table was moved, she used the room air filter. We repeated the shock and then enjoyed the humor of it. When the filter was out of her reach, she began raising her paw and scratching in the air, a gesture so hilarious that I laughed every time.

Likewise, Sassy has done what all dogs have accomplished. She managed to get rewarded for going outside and coming back in. At first she glared at me until she got a tiny treat, standing still, glued to the kitchen floor. Later I promised a treat if she went to see her mom in the bedroom. So I waited in the bathroom to see what would happen. Each time Sassy stayed just inside the bedroom door and peered out to see if I was getting her treat. I tried not to laugh, but the Reaganesque "trust but verify" was too funny. I peered out my doorway each time - and still do - and see her looking out of hers.

Sassy has been called The Chauffeur
because she waits in the driver's seat and visits through the open window.

Recent Thank-Yous from Readers and Viewers

We had some recent thank-you notes from people who have participated in our Sunday or mid-week services.

One came from the Upper Midwest, when the flu kept the couple from attending their home church. They were pleased we devoted the service to Gerhardt hymns.

Another household was experiencing a lack of mobility, so our service provided an alternative to pain and night driving.

The powerful snowstorms in the East meant that one man did not have to skip worship on Wednesday night - he could be with us.

We have viewers in New York State, Iowa, and Michigan, too, plus a cluster on the Left Coast. Australia? Yes.

Abortion and Child Trafficking Only Hint at the Magnitude of the Evil in America - And the World

I have followed Roman Catholic scandals since 1987. When I look through RC graphics on my computer, I try to remember the story with so many cardinals and the long history of other abusive Catholic leaders being protected and promoted. Two of the worst abusers of all time were honored at the Vatican, as if Rome were consciously copying the style of the Michigan District of WELS.

 Thank Q.

First of all, these scandals are world-wide and much larger in scope - more hideously evil than people could imagine. Keep that in mind when reading the news and watching these overlapping issues boil over.

As bad as the abortion industry is, it has served to numb and blind the American people to the cancerous growth stemming from this fundamental disregard for innocent life.

I am not going to pursue the details, only alert the readers to be following various forms of Internet research. The manic screaming of the established media is useful, but not to learn the news. The howls come from the knowledge they are losing and cannot fool everyone all the time.

Support Abortion, Planned Parenthood, and Christian News with Thrivent Choice Dollars

 March 12, 2018 Christian News.

This disgusting ad for Thrivent should be an alarm, especially since Otten ran a piece about how much LCMS members favor abortion. The cults are more pro-life than the LCMS, home of Walther, UOJ, and bed-fellow with ELCA.

When certain LCMS grandees found out that Thrivent was giving Choice matching grants to Planned Parenthood, they had a snit for several weeks. They never let on that this information was published on this blog five years previously.

Thrivent responded by dropping Planned Parenthood and all pro-life groups. The pro-life groups howled, making me wonder why anyone wanted to be associated with a genocidal "Lutheran" insurance business largely surrendered to ELCA.

Doubtless Team Otten will claim that Thrivent does not currently give Choice grants to Planned Parenthood. But does Thrivent pay for abortions in its health plan, following the ELCA protocol for paying for any abortion for any reason? I am quite sure they do, because the Left maintains its butt-hurt when offended - until and unless appeased. The summer warriors of the right maintain BH for only two weeks and then concede.

And does Thrivent offer abortion-promoting grants through its leaky sieve of grants here, there, and everywhere? I am quite sure money gets through to Planned Parenthood and allied causes.

Otten, WELS, Missouri, and the ELS prove that the more an entity relies on outside funds, the less it has - and the more it begs. The synods have unleashed their Thrivent bagmen on helpless seniors, to sign away their estates with Irrevocable Gift Trusts, the commission going to the Thrivent "Planned Giving Counselor" Ima  Hogg. God has called them into this special ministry, doncha know, as long as they get an insurance and annuity sales license first.

Jeske earns $155,000+ for 10 hours of work per week.

What Would Jeske Do? Would he resign from Thrivent when he reads this post?
