Upcoming Books in Order - Calvin, Luther, and the Ichabod Lutheran Dictionary

AKA Martin Chemnitz, aka the Second Luther, aka the Senior Editor of the Book of Concord.

First
Calvin Ruined the Protestant Faith is almost done. The book will be in larger print, full-color, also in Kindle, and later a free PDF. The book includes Zwingli's influence, but try to fit that into a book title.

The author's price will be about $5, so it will be attractive as a book for adult classes.

I am looking into making all my books free PDFs in their most edited form, the level of near perfection sent off to the printers.

Second
We have Luther's House Postils ready for printing next - very close to it. These are sermons for the household, which Ludwig Fuerbringer valued for their advice about marriage, children, and other household matters. There are three volumes, illustrated by Norma A. Boeckler, and to be in color, black and white, and Kindle. Gems will be published a little later (not started yet).

Third
The Ichabod Lutheran Dictionary is being worked on - definitions, trivia, a little fun here and there.

Fourth
Justification by Faith - Exegesis. So many ignorant louts are braying and hee-hawing about their Objective Justification that someone needs to provide the exegesis for Justification by Faith, the Chief Article of Christianity.

The plan is to do this in English and Greek, with English being dominant. Exegesis simply means - to declare, which means explaining what the text actually says.

In John 1 - the Logos is the exegesis - He declares the true nature of the Father. Jesus is the exegesis, so we should not be shy declaring the text as revealed - rather than theses from Halle Pietists and Fuller alumni.

Do Dogs Change Behavior as They Grow Older?
Yes, Sassy Is Definitely More Mischievous

Sassy's missing leg, amputated because of a horse kicking her, is the result of neglect from long ago. We adopted her because we could see her personality on the website featuring rescues.

Someone wrote a story about dogs changing their personalities as they grow older. Yes, they lose their puppiness, but Sassy seems to have more of those appealing qualities than ever before.

For example, she enjoys her little pranks. I was watching the news when she decided to put her claw on my stomach. She communicates with her paws a lot. This time she slowly dragged her claw on my skin. I yelped and she laughed. She does not just grin, but really laughs at the fun. My wife Chris said, "And you laughed." Yes, of course, but I am blamed for encouraging her. That was a one-time trick.

Sassy tolerates her Voyager but loves the Town Car limo.

She returned to getting my attention with strange noises. I look up and wonder if something is malfunctioning. I looked up twice before I noticed it was the claw plucking at the metal shelf.

Some other claw tricks are:

  1. Batting my leg lightly, which calls for something I should do.
  2. Making the touch a little stronger each time.
  3. Dragging her claw across my kneecap with some force.
  4. Triple-dragging her claw, looking fiercely at me.
  5. I often ignore that at first and say, "Watch Sassy." I know - it is my fault for encouraging her.
Once she has established friendship with someone on the block, she sits down on the sidewalk, in their way, until they pet her and talk to her about how sweet she is. I said to one, "You made her day." She said, "She made my day." If they are brother and sister, both have to pet her and compliment her.

One couple demands "love" from Sassy before we go. They cup a hand and Sassy pushes her soft muzzle into it, licking the hand. At that point she backs away and barks sharply. "Do you have something to do?" Bark! Bark! "Do you have an appointment?" Bark! Bark! Bark!!

Sassy is friends with a lot of dogs who bark at her and play tag a bit through the fence. She loves to get three pit bulls barking at her, so she only needs to be nearby to hear them on alert. She loves to walk "innocently" near their wooden fence to start a ruckus. She watches me because I discourage it. That is just as much fun for her as seeing her favorite huskies and shepherds. She has overdone this at times, so she acts like it is just another stroll in someone's  front yard.

Sassy walked into view to be in this photo. Our granddaughter went over backwards and held the pose, laughing and unhurt. Sassy upstaging her made it even funnier.

Experts on What Is NOT Lutheran Preaching.
Don't Fail To Miss These Two Speakers on Universalism in Preaching -
Justification without Faith - UOJ

What happened to Dr. Walter A. Maier (far more qualified that these politicians) and Justification by Faith?

Why do the "conservative" Lutherans continue to yank us around with their Objective Justification and Church Growth?

Wayne Mueller said at the WELS youth conference that evangelism was easy because we could "just say - you are already forgiven."

Rolfie One-Note is so blind to Justification by Faith that he edited his father's last book, Justification and Rome, and never saw Objective Justification repudiated in it. Now that I have pointed it out about 20 times, he omits that from his temple talks. Rolfie One-Note objects to my habit of quoting his father against his one and only dogma.

This settles the issue, but the Preus Clan will not admit it.

Wayne is very good at covering his points with fog, but he seems to be saying that the Confessions welcome a change in Biblical doctrine. He was so slippery in talks that his peers made him write down in advance what he was going to present. WELS is against the Book of Concord. As one member of their leadership said, "The Confessions are boring and irrelevant." A 1987 graduate said, "Zwingli was right about the Lord's Supper - Luther was wrong."

Late Last Night - The Scholars Gave Me Some Homework - Romans 16:17

Examine and avoid. Examine and avoid. Examine and avoid.

The official teachings of the LCMS are: 1) Fellowship with ELCA through Mark and Avoid Jeske, Thrivent; 2) Justification without Faith; 3) Church Growth via the Fuller Seminary Cloaca Maxima; 4) Evolution, 5) Abortion - an adiaphoron.

Romans 16

KJV
17 Now I beseech you, brethren, mark them which cause divisions and offences contrary to the doctrine which ye have learned; and avoid them.
18 For they that are such serve not our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly; and by good words and fair speeches deceive the hearts of the simple.

Verse 17
There are two significant parts to this verse, with word order used to emphasize the point.

I beg you, brothers.
(This is not just a request.)
Examine (or look at) those making divisions and deathtriggers
(skandala are not just offenses; the term comes from deadly triggers in traps).
Against the doctrine you learned, and
Lean away from them (or) - avoid them.

The two parts --
The Synodical Conference types, especially the toxic Cult of Legalistic Conmen (CLC sic) love to repeat "Mark and avoid" until the phrase becomes a monotone chant.

Slogans weaken the Scriptures (five Solas!) and do not help or edify by themselves.

Marking sounds like something we do with a felt pen, so it misses the mark today. That does not weaken my love for the KJV, because a pastor is obliged to study the text and provide paraphrases. Keeping up with the local surfer dude vocabulary is not required, but I digress.

Oddly, the verb for mark is found in telescope and microscope, not to mention medical devices I hesitate to name. All are instruments for careful observation, study, and diagnoses.

The weight of verse 17 is on carefully examine and on the object of that verb form.

Carefully examine whom? - those creating divisions and death-triggers. Paul wrote that there must be divisions, but false teachers create them for their own benefit, and these divisions are death traps.

Objective Justification is one such division, embraced by the radicals in the LCMS-WELS-ELCA-ELS-CLC (sic) and used as a way to get rid of traditional Lutherans. OJ kills the efficacy of the Word, the Means of Grace, and Justification by Faith. The last term is shortened by the radicals to Justification and named as the Chief Article! They are shameless liars.

Divisions and Death-Triggers Against
The key to careful observation is that these divisions and death-triggers (soul killers) are against the doctrine you learned

Lenski:  His injunction is to keep away from believers who are errorists and teach falsely. Not only the exact duplicates of the errorists of Paul's day are to be shunned, as though no new ones could arise, as though new ones do not divide, tear, and set traps, as though all errorists new and old, great and small, are not related, all in the same class; but, according to Paul himself (15:4), "whatever things were written before, for our instruction were they written," his admonition is to be fully applied and not weakened or evaded. Romans Commentary, p. 918.

Conclusions
The Synodical Conference is very much like the Southern Baptists, not exactly what Paul wrote about. The Synodical Conference began in Pietistic Unionism and has followed the Halle University model downhill at an increasing velocity.

The synodocrats are quick to press the shun button for whatever reason. They are good examples of leaning toward false teachers - for the money and their itching ears.

False teachers should be confronted with their errors, given a chance, and avoided.

ELCA gay activist - Let's publish a Book of Concord together!

Waldo Werning - let's use him for distributing Church Growth nonsense.

Wilken, the radio jockey, thinks Justification by Faith is Calvinism! Let's give him tons of money to spread his ignorance. He wants to build a statue of Paul the Plagiarist McCain, too - another giving opportunity.

How Different from the "Conservative" Lutherans Who Crave Thrivent Abortion-Friendly Money

Work with ELCA? No problem. Grab money from abortion-friendly Thrivent? No problem. Stand up for Biblical principles instead of money? Huge problem.
Martin Luther College (WELS) will transform your children!
S/he posted a Satanic symbol on Facebook, too.

Listen to this African Methodist leader about the radical denominational proposal to change its clergy standards, much like ELCA's in 2009. The vote failed, thanks to Third World leaders, but no thanks to American bishops, who backed it big time.

“With all due respect, a fixation on money seems more of an American problem than an African one. We get by on far less than most Americans do; we know how to do it. I’m not so sure you do. So if anyone is so naïve or condescending as to think we would sell our birth right in Jesus Christ for American dollars, then they simply do not know us.
We are seriously joyful in following Jesus Christ and God’s holy word to us in the Bible. And in truth, we think many people in the U.S. and in parts of Europe could learn a great deal from us. The UM churches, pastors and lay people who partner with us acknowledge as much.
Please understand me when I say the vast majority of African United Methodists will never, ever trade Jesus and the truth of the Bible for money (emphasis added).

What is more charming in WELS than children putting female makeup on the pastor and the all male church council?

Church and Change Your Gender - see below.

Start the third sex early, at Michigan Lutheran Seminary.

WELS funded this Church and Change boondoggle and appointed administrators based on their loyalty to this tripe. But DP Kudu Don Patterson was never a member - I just want to say that for the record, because they are all liars.

From Someone, Somwhere

 Sassy approves this post.

I was wondering how long it would be before you posted on the WELS decrease in giving. I read it yesterday on the WELS site, and it read like a "blame the member for our problems." This decrease comes at a time when many of our Lutheran Schools in WI, even Luther Prep, accept vouchers from the state ( although, I don't know if Luther Prep has any voucher students yet, although they are in the program). And, this decrease is at a time when MLC is asking for a special gift for their 25th anniversary - $70,000 for a statue, and $30,000 for student financial aid. (A little turned around, don't you think?) Keep up the good work. I've been recovering from a few serious illnesses the last few years, but your sermons have helped me through, and the dog articles, and creation gardening accounts, have been extremely enjoyable. Always a fan!

WELS Money Report Not Unexpected

The WELS money report was not unexpected.

For decades, the Church and Change Church Shrinkers and Objective Justification salesmen have worked hard to remove all vestiges of Biblical, Lutheran doctrine and practices from WELS.

WELS replaced Gausewitz, slowly, with the Kuske Dick, Jane, and Sally OJ catechism. A doctrinal reversal? No one noticed. Two farmers in Kokomo objected, and WELS kicked them out for quoting JP Meyer, whose idiotic commentary was lovingly re-published by WELS, the same blokes who accepted Catholic, Lutheran, Protestant for publication and then rejected it.

Since shunning is a sacrament in WELS, they used shunning to get rid of students who saw the light in prep, college, or seminary. The sacraments are normally for individual, but the WELS Sacrament of Shunning is aimed at the individual, spouse, children, grandchildren, and friends, so it works like leprosy on the fears of all.

The Marines have a saying, that 10% are incompetent or criminal. The difference in WELS is that those 10% are raised to positions of leadership, protected, promoted, and given enormous egos.

The talkative, intrepid Judas Goats simply pretend to object to WELS so they can deliver the disloyal into the hands of the SP, DPs, and CPs - angry men all.

The result of all this is not going to be the specific, measurable, achievable, relevant, and timely goals they dreamed about in the bars of Milwaukee and New Ulm. Not even the Niagara Falls of money from Schwan the Home-Wrecker could bail out WELS.

Enjoy the show - it can only get worse. I hope all the leaders live to be 100, so they can view the wreckage for themselves. They had their way, but God holds sway.

Best not to go against His Word.

The angry men of WELS took over, a long time ago, and look at how much they have accomplished. The sect is broke during a booming economy.

CMO totals for 2018 and CMO subscriptions for 2019

Congregation Mission Offerings (CMO) received in 2018 totaled $21,111,878. We are trying to be grateful for this almost generous support of (don't forget of) our synod’s mission and ministry. The total, however, was $246,000 (1.2%) below the offerings received in 2017 and $148,000 (0.7%) less than what congregations had indicated in their CMO subscriptions for the year. More than a decade of flat, and now even decreasing, CMO has made it increasingly challenging to maintain our current level of ministry, not to mention to seize some of the many gospel opportunities that God is graciously placing before us. We can hardly afford our Fuller, Willow Creek, and Trinity Divinity scholarships for mission pastors, staff, and stooges.

In the past, loyal and obedient WELSians knew how to serve and obey.

Adding to that challenge is the fact that subscriptions for 2019 are a measly $20,913,700, nearly 1% less than 2018 receipts. Since our anointed planning forecasted that subscriptions would be met in 2018 and that subscriptions for 2019 would increase by 0.5%, the task to maintain and expand staff salaries and benefits has become even more difficult. The results for 2018 and subscriptions for 2019 are $350,000 less than the forecast and compound to reductions from what was used for planning the next biennium of $454,000 and $456,000 for Fiscal Year 20 and Fiscal Year 21, respectively. This is how you repay us for all those Church Growth insights, NIV Bibles, and plagiarized Pietist dogmas?

Faithful scholars at Mordor have approved our cash cow - the new NIV. We believe in democracy and transparency - don't say yes until I finish talking.

One bit of good news is that offerings for January 2019 were 6.4% higher than the January offerings in 2018.
At its meeting later this week, the Synodical Council will be looking to adopt a Ministry Financial Plan that recognizes these financial realities. All areas of ministry have been asked to look for ways to economize and to plan for less spending than what had been anticipated. Once a plan for the next two years is adopted by the Synodical Council, it will be forwarded to the synod convention this summer for shaming.
As the economy improves, we pray that God will enable congregations to meet—and even exceed—their CMO subscriptions in 2019. And for Ichabod - name it not! - to stop publishing the truth about us. "And all Kelm's people said Amen?" Amen!
Serving in Christ,
President Mark Schroeder

Andrea Grew Strong in the Phillipines and is Home Now

The baby's mother - Ivy - was visiting family in the Philippines when Andrea decided to be born, three months early. She was tiny and had trouble with the most basic nutrition.

Now Ivy and Andrea are home in California with husband and dad Randy.

They gave me permission to post of a photo of the baby so many prayed for - daily.

Some Insights from Dr. Lito Cruz about Quia and Quatenus Subscriptions to the Book of Concord

Did the Calvinists invent Quia VS Quatenus Forms of Subscription?

Frequent visitors of this blog would know that I toyed with Calvinism when I was a Charismatic Evangelical. Before, coming to the Lutheran Confessions, I was seriously studying the Westminster Confession of Faith. Time and again, I could not dare myself to sign it.

Having the Book of Concord for many years in my library, I begun studying the documents found in it. With a Bible on one hand, I begun to warm to it and today I can heartily say I can sign my name on it. In fact, this is what is meant by subscription.

Not shortly after belonging to a Lutheran congregation and through my readings I learned about what Lutherans call quia (because of) vs quatenus (in so far as) , meaning do you subscribe to the BoC? But what kind? Quia or Quatenus?

I am going to be honest here. Being a former Calvinist, I was quite amazed that the Lutherans were into this debate, for I have always had the lingering suspicion that they were Calvinist categories. For example read this work of Rev Dr Clark's book of how he discusses quia vs quatenus in the context of Calvinistic confessions.

Just a week or so ago, I had the chance to track this down having some time on my sleeves and now being less distracted. So I had more time to chase up my theory and test it.

Here are my findings.

According to Dr. Robert P. Swierenga, a Dutch Reformed layman himself, as early as 1568-1571, the idea of quia vs quatenus subscription came into focus in the Reformed Church because they wanted to know the disposition of ministers who are being ordained in their churches. The actual labels of quia and quatenus were introduced in the Dutch Reformed National Synod of 1816.

This date overlaps with the many goings on with what is happening in US Lutheranism term by historians as Neo-Lutheranism of which the personalities were Hengstenberg, Caspari, Hoenecke, Phillippi and most of all, the venerated and considered by US "confessional" Lutherans as their church father - the Rev. C F W Walther.

Because of the timing, there is a high chance that quia vs quatenus distinctions flowed into Neo Lutheranism for after all for example, Walther was fond of intruding into Calvinistic problems, see his work on predestination that caused a storm in US Lutheranism.

If one notices, either you are doing a quia or a quatenus subscription to the Confessions. This is an all or nothing position. In other words, if you are subjected to only either of this categories, you are not being allowed a middle position. According to Dr. Swierenga, the Reformed in the late 1500s did not like this subjugation. It is too Roman Catholic - a type of zero sum game. However, they reluctantly went for it because they saw the need.

I hope by now, this has made you think and do some reflection. As a former Calvinist,  my testimony is that Calvinists do borrow ideas from Lutheranism after all Calvin signed a version of the Augsburg Confession. In the idea of quia or quatenus, could it be the reverse happened this time? Could it be that the Neo-Lutherans borrowed from Calvinism this time? A good question to ask is this, do we have documentary evidence that the Old Lutherans got into this debate in their circle? For if we have, the likelihood, the Reformed borrowed from Lutherans is high since they have often done that. Or could the reverse be true with the Neo Lutherans?

***

GJ - Sometimes the Walther Fan Club claims their opponents do not have a quia subscription, which is hilarious. Waltherians reject the Chief Article of Christianity, pass off their Halle Pietism as Biblical, and lob stink-bombs in every direction.

Given the ELCA-LCMS-ELS-WELS-CLC sic harmony on universal forgiveness and salvation without faith, the subscription label is irrelevant. They need to return to the KJV and Luther before they can be certified to quote or even mention the Book of Concord.

But it is true - what we believe, we confess as truth. That is why the Lutheran Enthusiasts confess Objective Justification.

Some of Magnus Sørensen's Excellent Research on Objective Justification

The Justification of Christ as the Efficient Cause of our Justification

The Narrow Lutheran Middle in the Controversy on Universal Objective Justification

By Rev. Magnus N. Sørensen

Samuel Huber - the "former" Calvinist kicked out of Wittenberg

"This is the truth and the light of the Gospel, showing to us the work of redemption accomplished  for all, so that we all can apply to ourselves by faith this benefit of redemption and the abolishment and remission of our sins. And so this is the foundation and the description, as of universal remission, so also of universal justification."

Paul Calvin Kelm helped Valleskey with this Church Growth textbook. O-Jay Webber cannot figure out how I connect CG and OJ. Otten promotes the book.

The development of Universal and Objective justification after Huber.

"The Swedish expert in Lutheran Orthodoxy, professor at Lund University, Rune Söderlund has claimed that the doctrine or at least the term universal justification arose among the Moravians.

Söderlund points to Norwegian professor Leiv Aalens
doctor’s dissertation as evidence, that even the young Zinzendorf, founder of Moravianism, taught universal justification. Zinzendorf and the Moravians reacted against the legalism of pietism.

While pietism looked for signs of regeneration in the inner life of the believer, the Moravians looked to the cross for assurance.

The Swedish Moravian preacher, Rutström, made the teaching of universal justification popular in Sweden, especially through his songs. According to Söderlund, Rutström might have read Huber directly while also being spread by the German Moravians.

In the discussions about universal justification in Sweden at the time of Rutström, another preacher, Anders Nohrborg defended a middle-way, where Christ was the representative head of mankind, who is absolved from the sins of the world in the resurrection. This middle-way left room for an individual justification as a separate forensic act."

LCMS Walther
Rune Söderlund argues that the LCMS had connections to the Moravians in Germany and that the doctrine of universal justification entered the Missouri synod that way.

Tom Hardt in his essay from the Robert Preus Festschrift however pointed out that the Synodical Conference referred to the Swedish Nohrborg when they began using the term in the 1872-essay of the Synodical Conference.

...

At the 1860-convention, it was also confessed that this universal justification was a representative justification:

As surely as Christ has died, and died for all people, so surely God sees all people as dead for the sake of their sins. Christ's death has redeemed sins as death for all people.

On the other hand, Christ is also raised in the stead of all people, thus all people are declared righteous in Christ; for Christ needed to be as the Righteous One for His person not by resurrection, but this has been done  for our sake, He died and rose again in their place, and thus all are justified in Christ.
Likewise, universal atonement was in no way confused with the justification that happened in the resurrection:
Finally, the following was spoken concerning the first thesis: What Christ has done and what has happened to Christ should not be confused. His life, death, and resurrection was no absolution, but rather His resurrection from the dead.

2 Corinthians 11:19 For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise. 20 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.  21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.  22 Are they Hebrews? so am I. Are they Israelites? so am I. Are they the seed of Abraham? so am I.  23 Are they ministers of Christ? (I speak as a fool ) I am more; in labours more abundant, in stripes above measure, in prisons more frequent, in deaths oft.  24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.  25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;  26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen,in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;  27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.  28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.  29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?  30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.  31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.  32 In Damascus the governor under Aretas the king kept the city of the Damascenes with a garrison, desirous to apprehend me:  33 And through a window in a basket was I let down by the wall, and escaped his hands. 12:1 It is not expedient for me doubtless to glory. I will come to visions and revelations of the Lord.  2 I knew a man in Christ above fourteen years ago, (whether in the body, I cannot tell; or whether out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;) such an one caught up to the third heaven.  3 And I knew such a man, (whether in the body, or out of the body, I cannot tell: God knoweth;)  4 How that he was caught up into paradise, and heard unspeakable words, which it is not lawful for a man to utter.  5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.  6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.  7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.  9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

KJV Luke 8:4 And when much people were gathered together, and were come to him out of every city, he spake by a parable:  5 A sower went out to sow his seed: and as he sowed, some fell by the way side; and it was trodden down, and the fowls of the air devoured it.  6 And some fell upon a rock; and as soon as it was sprung up, it withered away, because it lacked moisture.  7 And some fell among thorns; and the thorns sprang up with it, and choked it.  8 And other fell on good ground, and sprang up, and bare fruit an hundredfold. And when he had said these things, he cried, He that hath ears to hear, let him hear. 9 And his disciples asked him, saying, What might this parable be?  10 And he said, Unto you it is given to know the mysteries of the kingdom of God: but to others in parables; that seeing they might not see, and hearing they might not understand. 11 Now the parable is this: The seed is the word of God. 12 Those by the way side are they that hear; then cometh the devil, and taketh away the word out of their hearts, lest they should believe and be saved. 13 They on the rock are they, which, when they hear, receive the word with joy; and these have no root, which for a while believe, and in time of temptation fall away. 14 And that which fell among thorns are they, which, when they have heard, go forth, and are choked with cares and riches and pleasures of this life, and bring no fruit to perfection. 15 But that on the good ground are they, which in an honest and good heart, having heard the word, keep it, and bring forth fruit with patience.

Sermon Background - Clearing Paul's Name
One of the clever remarks about the Apostle Paul is that he seldom resisted the urge to praise himself. That is good for a chuckle during a seminary class or while reading an article. Today fewer will even get the joke.

Today's lesson is the finest example of self-praise, but many people grossly misunderstand it because of skeptics using it to mock Paul. The message is just the opposite of their caricature.

Point 1 - The Corinthians put up with fools - false teachers. These false teachers constantly boast about themselves even though they have accomplished nothing. They also mock Paul in their effort to become the leaders even though they have done nothing.

Point 2 - Paul asks them, So you put with fools, these false teachers who came in after all the work was done? Since you "suffer fools gladly" - welcome foolishness - I will play the role of fool for your benefit.

Point 3 - Paul's autobiography shows how much he has suffered physically, and they know it (though seem to forget). "I can boast like a fool, too." He is using the Jewish argument - from the lesser to the greater. That is - If you can be impressed by their empty boasting, I will do them many times better. Maybe you will listen to me.

Point 4 - Paul boasts in his weakness because anything worthwhile comes from God to prove God's power.

The false teachers of today would like to prove that Paul hated women, that he was a braggart and a tough guy to know. The brag passages sometimes show his weakness, which we all have, but also contrast with his boasting of the cross. It is important to remember that when skeptics try to make us dislike Paul on a personal basis, they are really trying to make the Scriptures a book about religion, not the Truth revealed by God. Once the authority of the Word is subordinated to man's wisdom and perspective, it ceases to be the Word of God authoritatively for all believers.

Notice also the play on words in Paul's letters - wisdom and foolishness. The wisdom of the world is foolishness to God, and the wisdom of God is foolishness to the world. That shows how the anti-God forces wean people away from the truth.

God Works in Weakness To Reveal His Power and Grace

2 Corinthians 11:19 For ye suffer fools gladly, seeing ye yourselves are wise. 20 For ye suffer, if a man bring you into bondage, if a man devour you, if a man take of you, if a man exalt himself, if a man smite you on the face.

This is a difficult text at first, because people have laid so much sarcasm on Paul and his language here. That has the desired effect among false teachers - to make others look away from it and miss the extraordinary lesson. That also makes it easier to bypass the conclusion showing Paul had a unique experience even beyond seeing the risen Christ.

These fools are the false teachers that did nothing to start the congregation but now want to take it from Paul. I have known various Church Growth experts, and they act just like this. They thing whatever they covet is already theirs to grab. They never stop boasting about themselves. They write books about how great they are, which make for hilarious reading a few years later.

Paul identifies the false teachers doing the following -
  1. They enslave you.
  2. They consume you.
  3. They demand payment from you.
  4. They praise themselves, world without end.
  5. They slap your face (insult you, or physically attack you).
21 I speak as concerning reproach, as though we had been weak. Howbeit whereinsoever any is bold, (I speak foolishly,) I am bold also.

If the false teachers want to compare themselves to Paul, he is happy to oblige. So Paul is willing to become a fool since the Corinthians welcome foolishness. This is a paradox, a seeming contradiction, and very skillfully done. The critics of the Bible and Bible translations seem to have very little sense of language - including their own. They are largely humorless, too. This is ironic humor, Paul playing the fool to shame the false teachers.

I have heard through the back-channels that I do not know any Greek. That came, in one instance, from a WELS pastor I had never met. Very well, since they know so much Greek and I so little, I will suspend my Greek classes and attend their classes in NT Greek on the Net. Unfortunately, I cannot find any of theirs, and we are on the third set - the Gospel of John, Romans 3, and the Gospel of Mark next.

Paul is almost duplicating the conflict between Jesus and his opponents. We often find that experts are experts because where they belong or where they were born (as if they had something to say about that). The opponents in John said, "We have Abraham for our father." Jesus replied, "Before Abraham was, I AM," identifying Himself as God, the voice from the Burning Bush, Exodus 3.

Paul has claims similar to his opponents, though not one of them has suffered in the least. This boasting is good for us, because we see how much Paul suffered physically in his ministry.

24 Of the Jews five times received I forty stripes save one.  25 Thrice was I beaten with rods, once was I stoned, thrice I suffered shipwreck, a night and a day I have been in the deep;

The Reformation was an era no different from Paul's. Faithful Christians were persecuted, thrown in dungeons, beaten, killed, and driven into exile. Even distinguished leaders like Chemnitz were driven in exile from the place where he was called to be a bishop, just as Paul Gerhardt was expelled from his congregation in Berline for being a faithful Lutheran. (The father of modern theology, F. Scheiermacher, helped promote such actions in his day through the Prussian Union - Lutherans and Calvinists united.)

We should also remind ourselves of many Lutheran pioneers in America who suffered many hardships to become educated, to serve and start congregations. W. Passavant avoided an easy congregational call so he could start charitable institutions and promote faithfulness to Lutheran doctrine (the pledge at Maywood Seminary, merged out of existence. Cubs Stadium is standing on the land he bought with his own funds to start a Lutheran seminary in Chicago. The local blockheads would not listen, so he did that on his own).

Christians are being persecuted and killed today.

26 In journeyings often, in perils of waters, in perils of robbers, in perils by mine own countrymen, in perils by the heathen, in perils in the city, in perils in the wilderness, in perils in the sea, in perils among false brethren;  27 In weariness and painfulness, in watchings often, in hunger and thirst, in fastings often, in cold and nakedness.

This is typical oration style, using repetition to make his points. Paul has endured everything for the Gospel, which has been planted and grown in Corinth. Any of his faults are fatal to his reputation, but the false teachers are forgiven everything. Below is Luther's timely description of false teachers:

---

False Teachers Use Work of Others

J-635.1

"Note the master hand wherewith Paul portrays the character of false teachers, showing how they betray their avarice and ambition. First, they permit true teachers to lay the foundation and perform the labor; then they come and desire to do the work over, to reap the honors and the benefits. They bring about that the name and the work of the true teachers receive no regard and credit; what they themselves have brought—that is the thing. They make the poor simple-minded people to stare open-mouthed while they win them with flowery words and seduce them with fair speeches, as mentioned in Romans 16:18. These are the idle drones that consume the honey they will not and cannot make." Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 110. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9; Romans 16:18.

False Doctrine IsTolerated

J-636.1

"And such false teachers have the good fortune that all their folly is tolerated, even though the people realize how these act the fool, and rather rudely at that. They have success with it all, and people bear with them. But no patience is to be exercised toward true teachers! Their words and their works are watched with the intent of entrapping them, as complained of in Psalm 17:9 and elsewhere. When only apparently a mote is found, it is exaggerated to a very great beam. No toleration is granted. There is only judgment, condemnation and scorn. Hence the office of preaching is a grievous one. He who has not for his sole motive the benefit of his neighbor and the glory of God cannot continue therein. The true teacher must labor, and permit others to have the honor and profit of his efforts, while he receives injury and derision for his reward."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 110f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. Psalm 17:9.

God Punishes Ingratitude by Allowing False Teachers

J-637.1

"In the second place such teachers are disposed to bring the people into downright bondage and to bind their conscience by forcing laws upon them and teaching works-righteousness. The effect is that fear impels them to do what has been pounded into them, as if they were bondslaves, while their teachers command fear and attention. But the true teachers, they who give us freedom of conscience and create us lords, we soon forget, even despise. The dominion of false teachers is willingly tolerated and patiently endured; indeed, it is given high repute. All those conditions are punishments sent by God upon them who do not receive the Gospel with love and gratitude."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. John 5:43.

False Teachers Flay Disciples to Bone

J-638.1

"In the third place, false teachers flay their disciples to the bone, and cut them out of house and home, but even this is taken and endured. Such, I opine, has been our experience under the Papacy. But true preachers are even denied their bread. Yet this all perfectly squares with justice! For, since men fail to give unto those from whom they receive the Word of God, and permit the latter to serve them at their own expense, it is but fair they should give the more unto preachers of lies, whose instruction redounds to their injury. What is withheld from Christ must be given in tenfold proportion to the devil. They who refuse to give the servant of truth a single thread, must be oppressed by liars."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

Avarice in False Teachers

J-639.1

"Fourth, false apostles forcibly take more than is given them. They seize whatever and whenever they can, thus enhancing their insatiable avarice. This, too, is excused in them."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

They Lord It Over Us

J-640.1

"Fifth, these deceitful teachers, not satisfied with having acquired our property, must exalt themselves above us and lord it over us...We bow our knees before them, worship them and kiss their feet. And we suffer it all, yes, with fearful reverence regard it as just and right. And it is just and right, for why did we not honor the Gospel by accepting and preserving it?"
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

We Are Dogs and Foot-Rags

J-641.1

"Sixth, our false apostles justly reward us by smiting us in the face. That is, they consider us inferior to dogs; they abuse us, and treat us as foot-rags." Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

False Teachers Are Peacocks

J-642.1

"The peacock is an image of heretics and fanatical spirits. For on the order of the peacock they, too, show themselves and strut about in their gifts, which never are outstanding. But if they could see their feet, that is the foundation of their doctrine, they would be stricken with terror, lower their crests, and humble themselves. To be sure, they, too, suffer from jealousy, because they cannot bear honest and true teachers. They want to be the whole show and want to put up with no one next to them. And they are immeasurably envious, as peacocks are. Finally, they have a raucous and unpleasant voice, that is, their doctrine is bitter and sad for afflicted and godly minds; for it casts consciences down more than it lifts them up and strengthens them."

---

28 Beside those things that are without, that which cometh upon me daily, the care of all the churches.  29 Who is weak, and I am not weak? who is offended, and I burn not?  30 If I must needs glory, I will glory of the things which concern mine infirmities.  31 The God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, which is blessed for evermore, knoweth that I lie not.

Another part of Paul's pain is the burden of his responsibilities and his deep concern for others. At this point he has moved from external suffering to his inner suffering. So the main point of his proclamation is going to be made.

The emphasis upon weakness is directly related to Paul's experience of being taken up into the heavens. Luther is one of the few who can write clearly about this.

Lenski: "He is using a club to demolish the fake pretenses of the
false apostles who play themselves up as "superlative or superfine apostles" (11:5; 12:11). The task of wielding this club is forced upon Paul. The Corinthians derive no profit from it. They are only to witness what Paul is doing to these fake apostles."

Paul is not going to describe what cannot be told, but that fostered a whole line-up of people who got on TV to speak about their journeys to heaven and back. That was started by a fake account from a boy, which the father wrote and earned all the money from it. Soon the flight paths to heaven were busier than O'Hare at Christmas. The modern braggarts rested their glory on story-telling, and that morphed into angel messages later

5 Of such an one will I glory: yet of myself I will not glory, but in mine infirmities.  6 For though I would desire to glory, I shall not be a fool; for I will say the truth: but now I forbear, lest any man should think of me above that which he seeth me to be, or that he heareth of me.

Paul could glory but he is really making a transition to his weakness. This is best understood through the modern examples of glorying false teachers. They say, "Pay attention to me - I have 5,000 members in church on Sunday." The next one has 15,000, and on it goes. They never align themselves with the Sower and the Seed, which gives all glory to the Word. No, they talk about their great results. If they have great results, they must be experts. So they conclude. Everyone is expected to think they are infallible and they are above the Scriptures. They do not say that, but their followers act that way, as expected. Many hangers-on want to share the glory, money, and luxuries too.

I am especially tickled by those who are experts but have almost no experience as parish pastors. We hear from "theologians" with no training and congregational experts who specialize  in grabbing bureaucratic positions.

Many times the congregational wisdom comes from business fads being recycled - or pop psychology - or statistical studies. Yet, in all these years I have not found those methods in the Bible.

7 And lest I should be exalted above measure through the abundance of the revelations, there was given to me a thorn in the flesh, the messenger of Satan to buffet me, lest I should be exalted above measure. 8 For this thing I besought the Lord thrice, that it might depart from me.

Many look for something outward, such a problem with his eyes. However, that kind of problem evokes sympathy rather than scorn. I heard from a speaker yesterday was seated in a chair and interviewing two celebrities. He used his digital device to review his notes, but by putting in his earplug for a few seconds at a time. I did not know with certainty that he was blind until he was escorted away. Then I thought, "That man is masterful in speaking, because he remembered his questions in great detail and never fumbled, as sighted people do when reading with reasonably good eyes.

Our wonder-dog Sassy constantly evokes sympathy and love because she does so much with three legs.

I agree with Luther that Paul's thorn in the flesh was emotional, which is in harmony with his tremendous apostolic efforts, his responsibilities, and his sensitivity. His scattered flocks were in constant danger from all kinds of threats, doctrinal and moral.

This leads to one of the greatest verses for all people, because we experience weakness, exhaustion, depression, and futility. Many of my graduate students suffer and have trouble doing their work because of it.

9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

For example, every parent with a special child - who does not fit the norms for physical or other accomplishments - will wonder, "Why can't my child be like all the rest?" Over time, the special characteristics are no longer problems but attributes. As Luther said in his 1 Peter commentary, they are like jewels. They adorn the child, especially since God gives so much in other areas when certain qualities seem short or missing.

Our neighbor Mike was born with very little in eyesight, strength, and "normal" intelligence. His family worked with him 59 years to help him become strong, sighted, and able to communicate. He helped his neighbors and worried about them. His observations were often brilliant though some conversations were Delphic and needed an interpreter. He was in every way an asset on our little block and deeply missed. We all had to say, "Look at how much Mike did because his mother, sister, and brother loved him." And Jesus, too, because he was a believer.

It is easy to find people who have born with all normal functions, often superior abilities, and yet broken by not seeing those attributes as gifts from God.

I doubt whether this lesson is taught more than a few places, because it does not glorify man and man's works, but God's power and grace.

For that reason, this is the most comforting passage of all for those suffering inwardly, where no one can see. For some, it is grieving the loss of a loved one, which leaves us weak and helpless. Luther said that about losing his favorite daughter. He urged others not to suffer so much, but that loss left him flattened. For others, it is a disposition, which is inherited. Musicians and artists are known for being sensitive, which is both good in perfecting their work but painful in other ways.

In all that we do, this passage should be kept in mind, because all the important work is done by God, to show His grace is sufficient, to show that His power is made perfect in weakness.

Those ministers who really think they do it all are always demolished when it goes poorly for them. Paul said remaining a Christian believer is a good accomplishment when serving as a pastor. I see some humor in that, but it is also painfully true, especially today. There are more forces against the minister (society, denominational leaders) than for him. The biggest apostates I know about (famous, names withheld) said their fathers were poor but respected all over town. They were sad that was no longer true. Both were earning stellar wages (non-believers of the worst sort) leading people astray.

Every congregation, pastor, and denomination drone should study the lesson from the Gospel and realize the living Seed of the Word has the power, not the arm flinging the seed in all directions. We are certainly admonished to be faithful, but we have no idea - nor should we - about the results of our efforts.

  1. We should be careful about the purity of the Word taught.
  2. Secondly, we should be anxious to share it as many ways as possible.
  3. Finally, we should trust the power of the Spirit in God's Word.
