Rationalism and Pietism/Mysticism
State church –
controlled by Rationalists, did not like Pietists who were called Mystics.
Walther’s father a
rationalist pastor, but CFW was involved in a Pietistic cell group at Leipzig University.
Pietists did not get certified but Walther did. His circle was Pietistic and
they became the leaders under Stephan.
Stephan took over as
the cell leader when the previous leader moved away and died. Previous leader
super-strict, mortification of the flesh.
Stephan a Bohemian –
they had historic ties to Pietism and Zinzendorf. Stephan trained at Halle
where the Easter Absolution (OJ) was taught.
Halle history – born in
Pietism to promote Pietism. Spener the “first ecumenical theologian.”
Stephan’s parish had a
very special relationship with Pietism, Zinzendorf.
