Only One Driveway Cleared - By the Oldest Resident in the Cul-de-Sac

 Minnesotans and South Dakotans know what a real snowstorm leaves behind.

I shocked the Walmart cashier today - "I am the oldest person on the cul-de-sac, and the only one with a cleared driveway." She was as shocked as I was.

We were responsible for cleared walks in Moline, and my parents encouraged me to do it for free. A pedestrian's slip on ice could have earned a ticket plus a great deal of disgust. "What's wrong with these lazy kids? In my day..."

In Arkansas, shoveling snow is considered a mental disorder. At a group meeting, when we first moved here, one man said, "I grew up in Arkansas. I DO NOT SHOVEL SNOW!" 

I already went to the gym today, so the idea of leaving slush, ice, and snow on the walks and driveway seemed a bit hypocritical. No one did the walks in the neighborhood, so I did mine plus another where the resident had just moved away.

Youth no longer mow lawns or shovel snow.
