JUST over 4m babies were born in America in 2010, some 3% less than the previous year, according to a recent report from the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention. In 2010 the total fertility rate of 1,932 births per 1,000 women fell further below the replacement rate of 2,100 births for the third year running.

The current Demographic Winter affecting every nation has been a calculated effort. All Lutheran Synods have glibly provided financial support for this through Thrivent Financial For Lutherans, Lutheran World Relief etc. The psuedo Lutheran synods have lulled their laity to sleep, gradually losing Christ centered and doctrinally based discernment. Now many are willingly embracing pagan, occultic new age practices and beliefs.
Canada and Europe are MUCH worse....ironically, southern European nations (including Italy), the historical heartland of Roman Catholicism and the proverbial large Catholic families, are in the death spiral birth rate (under 1.5 vs. the replacement rate of 2.1).
I think Canada is around 1.3 or 1.4...
US population is still growing, primarily because of immigration...although, until the last 3 years, the "native" population birth rate was at least at the replacement level.
If God allows the world to go on for another 100 years...the change in demographics (both racially and culturally) will be mind blowing...
My bet is that if God does allow the world to go on for another 100 years the heartland of the Gospel will no longer be the United States but somewhere in Asia. (maybe S. Korea?)...
But...and I must emphasize...no (WELS) schools will close....

Why does Grumpy's insistence that no WELS school will close sound more and more like the sheer but senseless determination of N Korean and Iranian dictators? For instance, N Korea built a massive hotel it couldn't complete, and it would never have full occupancy since there isn't that much travel there, yet they built the 105 floor skyscraper from 1987 to 2011 anyway:
