Autumn Continues with an 84 Degree Weekend
The roses are still blooming well and still delivering buds after the nine inches of rain we enjoyed. The weather cooled, but we will have beautiful days for the next two weeks.
The butterfly bushes arrived, so I planted them just before a light rain, mulching them with newspapers and shredded cyprus, adding some Epsom Salts during the rain to strengthen the roots.
I learned from reading more about fungi that they are the long-distance delivery mechanisms for nutrition at the plant roots. Bacteria and protozoa are local taxi rides, while fungi are cross-country trains in comparison.
The plant roots hand out carbon to fungi and get various nutrients in return, the exchange guided by the roots. I keep adding leaves to the compost, because those are carbon credits for Vanity Fair of composting and growing. Hipster gardeners like me realize that the carbon rich leaves are just as important as nitrogen rich grass and weeds in the compost.
Our gardening neighbor is donating his green trash to the compost, organic cash being invested for the 2015 garden.
