Eating supper as we speak just a couple of miles from Salem! Something odd has happened with the ELCA in Johnson County lately. Three congregations recently closed. Two had been really big until relatively recently with massive buildings, one unceremoniously torn down to make a city park, the other still forlornly sitting empty and for sale. The third had a smaller but quite lovely building bought by the Roman Catholic diocese for a traditional "Latin mass" congregation that is absolutely PACKED for their numerous weekend and daily masses.
By the way, though a half-dozen malls in the metro area have vanished, Oak Park Mall is still open and thriving! In the winter I usually go walking there several times a week.
