Another reason - This photo of MLC students appears on many gay sites,
advertising their porn.
Just Google "Party in MLC" to find out.
The video is still being played.

Kyle,
I understand why you're upset with people who bash MLC. You likely are taking it personally.
Thoughtful people habitually mock MLC because a large percentage of the school's graduates seem to be missing an important aspect of what it means to "educated". It's hard to define this aspect, but I think I have a way for you to visualize it: Draw three circles, each overlapping the other. (This is called a Venn diagram)
- Label one circle "incapable of critical analysis".
- Label another "unexposed to literature, thought, music, art and science not specifically WELS in genesis".
- Label the 3rd circle: "Being shaped for vocations with 100% job security".
Now, put on your imagination cap and try to imagine the common ground between those three things. How to describe it...hm... "those who plan on surviving in a totally false thought-economy?"
It's not hard to guess why intelligent laymen, professionals in a myriad of differing vocations, find it difficult to take MLC grads seriously.
It occurs to me that MLC grads (more than anyone)should be up in arms about Ski and the other Church-Shrinkers spending all the money. MLC grads won't have any kind of security if the Shrinkers take over. Junkets get higher priority than Lutheran Schools. WELS teachers who can't find jobs in the WELS usually end up working at the 7-11 in Red Field SD (if you get my drift).
They make Paul Calvin Kelm their keynoter,
videotape Martin Luther's statue fighting with the Sprinter statue,
and no one takes them seriously?

I Googled "Party in the MLC" repeatedly, and all the links say, "This video has been removed by the user."
Where is it still being played?
I am just completely curious...why does no one on this blogspot even occasionally promote the Gospel instead of tearing other people down? I am neutral to all parties, and I think it hurts the invisible church when all we do is focus on tearing people down instead of focusing on our REAL purpose...which is to spread the message of Christ's forgiveness. I have no agenda with anyone from this blog or anyone whom it speaks of, but the lack of love and lack of any focus on forgiveness and spreading the Gospel message in this blog is very saddening to me.
If someone's in the wrong, bashing them publicly is the furthest thing away from following Jesus' command to love and to approach them in private. Also, in some of the blogs, I read the phrase "mark and avoid." In no way are you marking and avoiding someone if you continue to bash them and focus on them. Focus on your true goal in life, to spread the gospel. Thank you
MLC students live in another world of their own making.

Anon@4:15, the operative word is excoriate since the church leaders/members in question promote false doctrine and nonsense instead of the Gospel.

I'm not a theologian and I'm no scholar of the Lutheran Confessions (though I believe them), so please be patient with this question:
It seems that a lot of folks now-a-days talk as though the so-called Great Commission is THE focal point of a Christian's life. Not that spreading the word isn't important, but I would say that Evangelism is more of a naturally occurring fruit of belief. I feel like my main purpose on earth is to believe.
You just look at the whole New Testament--Isn't it odd that the last few verses of Matthew have become the précis the Bible? Why not use "Faith comes from hearing the message and the message is heard through the Word of Christ."? It seems to direct everyone back to the whole Word, and includes evangelism too.
It's such a strong human tendency that makes each person want to save the trees, the planet, the children, save the polar ice caps, the gay whales, save the spotted owl, etc.It would makes sense if Satan encouraged Christians to place an unreasonable focus on "making disciples".
Is it the inner triumph-of-the-human-spirit liberal/activist in us or is it truly the central message of the Scriptures as so many would have me believe?
I think Anon 4:15's point was that there are people on this blog that are missing the point. Yes, when outreach is a church's sole objective, it can distort doctrine, but too great a focus on "marking and avoiding" can do just as much damage. Ichabod's outsider perspective on issues at MLC makes it more accurate in many of its assessments of some aspects of MLC life, but also can cause gross generalizations. When people on this blog label all MLC grads as ignorant, unqualified and uncultured, they paint with too broad a brush, and it's hard to see how these accusations are motivated by genuine concern and Christian love.
"100% job security"? Ah.... how I wish it were so. I spent 24 years in the Lutheran teaching ministry, the last 17 at the same congregation. Then I was laid-off. Try retraining and getting a job at 51. It may happen to these kids to some day, just depends on what their last names are!
>>>>WELS teachers who can't find jobs in the WELS usually end up working at the 7-11 in Red Field SD (if you get my drift).<<<<<<
sad but true
Wow, do you think they're hiring at the 7-11 in Red Field? Maybe I should send them a resume. From what I've seen, MLC students who don't have calls or the right last name end up as public school teachers. They're young and they don't cost a school distric very much! (aka cheap).
Scott,
Why were you laid off?
Not that other institutions don't engage in nepotism, but I always thought the WELS was especially bad when it came to "who you know"...
This really hit home during my years in prep school...having the right last name could really make things easier if you ever ran afoul of the system.
As for MLC (back in my day, it was called DMLC), I never once heard of a person, at least from my prep school, MLS, being denied admittance because of academic performance issues. You didn't exactly have bragging rights if you got an "acceptance letter" from Dumb Man's Last Chance (DMLC)...
Well, that's kinda' a long story that I will try to boil down to the bare bones. Congregation decided to build an addition to the church. Surprise, the ecomony tanked. Congregation gets into money trouble. That's the money part. School has a new principal (who I knew from DMLC). I do actually still respect this person! A small group of parents seemed to be unhappy with me. Talk to principal but not to me. (Isn't that the WELS' way?) Principal and pastors seem to feel that I am unhappy after 17 years. Does anybody talk to me? (You know that answer.) However, nobody tells me all this until May! Then I get asked that dreaded WELS question, " Scott, to you still think you want to be in the ministry?" "Take your time and think about it. But, if you do decide to stay, you'll probably have to talk to the Church Council so they'll be assured that you're up to it". After 24 years in the ministry and 17 years serving this congregation, I'd be #@$%^ (thingies mine) if I was going to beg! At this time our Board of Education was making rumblings of having to cut a staff member. So, I saw this as a God-pleasing way to get out of this. I volunteered to have my call terminated. They gave me a buy-out package, and here I am. Anonymous, I'm sorry to give you such a long answer to such a short question. I think I did a pretty good job 8th Commandment wise. If you really want to get me started, I'll tell you my Doug Englebrecht story!!
Dk, I strongly believe in doctrine and keeping one's own faith whetted and strengthening one's own faith as well, but how can you go your life without then, as a believer, spreading the Gospel message? I am not at all a part of the church growth movement, but our two-fold purpose on earth is to come to faith and to spread the Gospel.
Scott,
Yes! Please tell the Doug Englebrecht story. Two exclaimation marks!! Now its sure to be an interesting story. Come back when you have the time.
In Christ,
from WELs church lady
Mr. Jungen,
Thank you for answering the question forthrightly. I have also witnessed this phenomena where the teacher is not consulted when it directly impacts him or her. At my former congregation, we desired to have our special needs son enrolled in their LES. His four older siblings all went through the school. When we approached the Board of Education about it, we assumed that they would immediately approach the teacher that he would have and ask for her input. From beginning to end, they never spoke with her. When my wife asked her, she indicated that she would be willing to do it. She even has a Master's degree in special education. The way that we, as his parents, were treated was bad enough. But to completely ignore the teacher was a real slap to her face. Through it all, they never admitted to their many errors. That is one of many reasons why it is my "former congregation".

I don't run from evangelism, but I don't go seeking it out. God makes some evangelists.
I try to study the word faithfully and trust God will put me in the right place at the right time WITH the right words.
The Oscar Wilde link was hilarious. That was a great morning chuckle!
