I Know You Are Reading This, EastCoast

I remember my mother dusting my cheek to make this look cute for the doughnut calendar. I also remember hating the cuteness.
I think it is funny now, 58 years later.


I hear from people who say, "What is the use? There is no way to turn this around." Next I hear the statistics about how few are in agreement and willing to do anything. The statistics may be valid, but they are not relevant.

Only one thing matters - conveying the Means of Grace to people, the pure Word of God.

Thanks to the Internet and computers, we can reach more people with the Word--almost for free--than all the Reformers put together.

But one thing works like a worm in the minds of all Christians, especially ministers - am I doing any good? Some people are especially keen about making that question uppermost, whether through vindictiveness or thoughtlessness. There is no other place where a destructive sadist can find a safe refuge than in a congregation.

I knew one old-fashioned Lutheran pastor who let the worm devour him. He dared to question Church Growth and went public about it. The local pastors undermined him to such an extent, with the blessing of the synod, that he no longer wanted to be a pastor. He said he was a failure.

I asked him, "Have you baptized any babies?" He said yes.

"Have you offered Holy Communion?" He had.

"Have you preached the pure Word of God?" He had tried his best.

I said, "How can you be a failure when you have used the Means of Grace faithfully? You are not the judge of how effective you are!"

The organizations, members, fellow pastors and the world all feed the worm. That is how Satan attacks us, through our emotions, where we are weakest. He does not want a drop of our blood, as Luther warned. Satan wants us to despair, to say, "What is the use of trying?"

Jesus called it bearing the cross daily because the Word inflicts constant pain on the Old Adam. That will not end until we are dead.

Those who escape the cross are many. They delve into the Satanic arts of false doctrine and go so far into darkness that they tumble at the peak of their fame. Robert Schuller is the most obvious example, but there are many others. It grinds us that such fools are adored by the media and rewarded by their robotic followers, but they have the icing without the cake.

The most comforting moments of life are fleeting but lasting in our memories. It may be the funeral services done for the faithful or the counseling session that saved a life. Decades later, someone will say, "I still remember that sermon on..."

I have mentioned to the young ones that no minister will ever say, "That was a great committee meeting we had 20 years ago, this Friday." He will say, "Remember when our four year old said - "You play the organ, Daddy. I'll preach." Or - "Remember the episode of the flapping acolyte robes and the sliding candle lighter?"

A minister has the chance to spend more time with his wife and children than any other professional. He has the opportunity to influence his children profoundly, and future generations as well. If he dies a believer, which is not always the case, he has done very well, as the Word says.

If he doubts the efficacy of the Word, he is saying that the rain comes down without effect, the snow falls without effect. God no longer works through the Word, but through gimmicks.

Luther often experienced despair about his work, which is still celebrated today. No one can doubt that his effectiveness was due to the clarity of his teaching. Nevertheless, his own colleagues did more damage to the Reformation than the pope and Turks put together, he complained.

The Efficacy of the Word
"The Word of God is efficacious not only when it is being read from the Bible, but also when it is being spoken or preached, and when it is recalled by memory. The Word of God, properly speaking, is really not the letters which we see or the sound which we hear, but the divine thoughts, the truths designated by these signs."

I wish pastors are reading this post. This is one of your finest or best post among many.

They should stop reading anti-ichabod propaganda. I observe though that most of those who read the black propaganda are repeat-after-me pastors from the sausage grinder.
