But a Missouri Campus Would Be Anathema

Catechesis has left a new comment on your post "Why Does WELS Crave Worship Conferences At ELCA Col...":

The craziness of it all is that there would have been more criticism if the conference had been held on a Missouri Synod campus. Go figure.

GJ - The COP got their Depends in a knot only when a WELS conference was going to feature Kent Hunter (LCMS Shrinker) and Waldo Werning (LCMS Shrinker). When Paul Calvin Kelm hosted Leonard Sweet (Methodist New Ager) for Church and Change, his own list-members went Medieval on him - but the conference went ahead and the COP did not nix it. WELS officially hated Martin Marty in one of their publications, when he was LCMS - reason enough for split. But the same WELS loved the same Martin Marty when he was an ELCA member and spoke at a joint ELCA-WELS-LCMS evangelism conference and at WLC.

WELS breeds a peculiar hatred of the Missouri Synod in each and every Sausage Factory graduate. A typical WELS story will have Missouri hopelessly behind in Biblical languages and sadly lacking in other areas. Or they have a Missouri visitor at a conference expressing awe at the wonderfulness of the Wisconsin Sect, concluding with misty eyes, "You don't realize what you have." Cue violins. Get out hankies. Pause in humble thankfulness that God still has WELS doing the heavy-lifting.
