Luther's Hymn 260 Illustrated - Reposted from 2014

Luther says this about false teachers:

False Doctrine Tolerated
"And such false teachers have the good fortune that all their folly is tolerated, even though the people realize how these act the fool, and rather rudely at that. They have success with it all, and people bear with them. But no patience is to be exercised toward true teachers! Their words and their works are watched with the intent of entrapping them, as complained of in Psalm 17:9 and elsewhere. When only apparently a mote is found, it is exaggerated to a very great beam. No toleration is granted. There is only judgment, condemnation and scorn. Hence the office of preaching is a grievous one. He who has not for his sole motive the benefit of his neighbor and the glory of God cannot continue therein. The true teacher must labor, and permit others to have the honor and profit of his efforts, while he receives injury and derision for his reward."

Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 110f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. Psalm 17:9.

God Punishes Ingratitude by Allowing False Teachers

"In the second place such teachers are disposed to bring the people into downright bondage and to bind their conscience by forcing laws upon them and teaching works-righteousness. The effect is that fear impels them to do what has been pounded into them, as if they were bondslaves, while their teachers command fear and attention. But the true teachers, they who give us freedom of conscience and create us lords, we soon forget, even despise. The dominion of false teachers is willingly tolerated and patiently endured; indeed, it is given high repute. All those conditions are punishments sent by God upon them who do not receive the Gospel with love and gratitude."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9. John 5:43.

False Teachers Flay Disciples to Bone

"In the third place, false teachers flay their disciples to the bone, and cut them out of house and home, but even this is taken and endured. Such, I opine, has been our experience under the Papacy. But true preachers are even denied their bread. Yet this all perfectly squares with justice! For, since men fail to give unto those from whom they receive the Word of God, and permit the latter to serve them at their own expense, it is but fair they should give the more unto preachers of lies, whose instruction redounds to their injury. What is withheld from Christ must be given in tenfold proportion to the devil. They who refuse to give the servant of truth a single thread, must be oppressed by liars."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 111f. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

Avarice in False Teachers

"Fourth, false apostles forcibly take more than is given them. They seize whatever and whenever they can, thus enhancing their insatiable avarice. This, too, is excused in them."
Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

They Lord It Over Us

"Fifth, these deceitful teachers, not satisfied with having acquired our property, must exalt themselves above us and lord it over us...We bow our knees before them, worship them and kiss their feet. And we suffer it all, yes, with fearful reverence regard it as just and right. And it is just and right, for why did we not honor the Gospel by accepting and preserving it?"

Sermons of Martin Luther, 8 vols., ed., John Nicholas Lenker, Grand Rapids: Baker Book House, 1983, VII, p. 112. Second Sunday in Lent. 2 Corinthians 11:19-33; 12:1-9.

Obnoxious Oddities from a WELS District President - Yet Taught by WELS

The following quotations have been reverently copied from the two convention essays delivered by Jon Buchholz, ex cathedra, at a WELS convention. And yet the California Arizona district voted him in later as a District President.

Buchholz is really serious about discipline. He spent years studying the Jeff Gunn parish before welcoming the Church and Changer. He was "concerned about the souls there," he claimed.

Justification in Mission and in Ministry - Pastor Jon D. Buchholz

The term objective justification never appears in the Lutheran Confessions. Without using the term, however, Luther and the confessors taught that God’s justifying work in Christ stands as an objective, accomplished fact, which is apprehended by faith. It wasn’t until nearly 350 years after Luther that another controversy in the Lutheran church forced theologians to formulate terms to relate the justification completed at the cross to its appropriation by faith.

The status controversiae which precipitated a thorough discussion of the universal nature of God’s forensic act was a dispute among Lutherans in the later 1870s about the nature of faith and God’s eternal election to salvation. Part 2, page 1.

No, Luther and the Confessors did not teach forgiveness without faith, also known as the Easter absolution of the entire world. Nor did Walther's promotion of Halle Pietism create the term Objective Justification. That came from the Calvinist's English translation of the Halle professor, Knapp. Walther adopted the double justification scheme, which actually traveled to Germany first and bounced around before Walther discovered the double justification scheme.

The English translation was published before the Stephanite ships landed in New Orleans,
but Walther learned Easter absolution dogma from Martin Stephan,
the Halle-trained cult leader who found the LCMS.
Walther correctly observed that Ohio’s doctrine of election was synergistic.2 It undermined God’s grace, and it incorrectly made faith—something inside man—into an effective cause of salvation. Walther stood with Luther and the early Lutheran theologians and insisted that there are only two causes of salvation: (1) the grace of God and (2) the merits of Christ. Part 2, p. 1.

Why do these false teachers always begin with Walther? The main reason is their ignorance of Scripture, Luther, and the Confessions. Another reason is clear - they cannot derive their precious Objective Justification from Genesis 15, Romans 3-4-5, Galatians, Luther's Galatians Commentary, or anything else - except the heretic Huber - before the age of Pietism.

Like all UOJ Enthusiasts and Walther, Buchholz treats faith as a work of man and conveniently ignores Augsburg Confession Articles IV and V, not to mention the entire purpose of John's Gospel and the Bible - to instill faith in Jesus through the work of the Holy Spirit.

Walther stood with Stephan - against Luther. Neither Pietist had an adequate education, and both were inordinately proud of their own opinions.

Synergism is "making a decision for Christ," not having faith in Christ. This charge is ironic, because Walther's dogma (JP Meyer, et al) demand that the individual "make a decision for UOJ."

The two Kokomo families were kicked out of their WELS congregation
for rejecting this nonsense, a rehash of Walther. See below.
Walther says - you must make a decision for UOJ.
"The Word of God is not rightly divided when faith is required as a condition of justification and salvation, as if a person were righteous in the sight of God and saved, not only by faith, but also on account of his faith, for the sake of his faith, and in view of his faith.3" Part 2, page 1. Walther, Law and Gospel, Thesis XIV

Does Walther condemn Paul? - faith is the condition of justification
here and everywhere else except UOJ Pietism.

Buchholz pretends to be Biblical, but - like all Enthusiasts - he begins with dogma and searches for scraps to support his opinion. Theological libraries are packed with volumes dedicated to the same method.

Buchholz is infatuated with himself and will listen to no one. When I told him he was getting there with his restaurant napkin exposition on the Means of Grace, he immediately contacted Brett Meyer and said I agree with him - Buchholz - against Brett. That was clearly not so.

I was appalled that Buchholz had a free copy of Thy Strong Word but excused himself from even glancing at it. Subsequently the District President proved to be full of duplicity and cowardice in promising to discuss justification with the congregation in New Mexico and kicking them out with glee while trying to foreclose on their mortgage.

As I recall, he excommunicates by email after having the chance to discuss matters face to face. Walther did the same thing. That may be why Buchholz prefers Walther to Luther, Rambach to St. Paul.

Confessionalism is told to
whisper low in Jerusalem, lest it be heard on the streets of Gath.

Clergy and laity have an obligation to study the Word of God and let the Holy Spirit teach them through the Scriptures.

If anyone is in awe of how many essays and books are written in favor of universal forgiveness without faith - UOJ - let him spend several weeks at a Vatican owned theological library. There he will find hundreds of books on the Immaculate Conception and Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary. One work simply on Mary is three volumes, with elaborate histories and testimonies from world known Roman Catholic scholars.

With that in mind, look at the WELS Essay Files, where selective works are kept for for the poorly educated clergy and laity to study and obey.

Jesus Canceled Your Debt! - By Pastor Jon D. Buchholz  2013
In nomine Jesu Objective justification under attackA dispute has arisen among Lutheran theologians regarding the doctrine of justification. The specific question dealswith the completeness of justification at Christ’s cross and empty tomb, as well as the role of faith in justification. DidGod justify the world objectively, apart from the faith that receives it subjectively?

Augsburg Confession, Articles IV and V
Article IV: Of Justification.
1] Also they teach that men cannot be justified before God by their own strength, merits, or works, but are freely justified for 2] Christ's sake, through faith, when they believe that they are received into favor, and that their sins are forgiven for Christ's sake, who, by His death, has made satisfaction for our sins. 3] This faith God imputes for righteousness in His sight. Rom. 3 and 4.

Article V: Of the Ministry.
1] That we may obtain this faith, the Ministry of Teaching the Gospel and administering the Sacraments was instituted. For through the Word and Sacraments, as through instruments, 2] the Holy Ghost is given, who works faith; where and when it pleases God, in them that hear 3] the Gospel, to wit, that God, not for our own merits, but for Christ's sake, justifies those who believe that they are received into grace for Christ's sake.
4] They condemn the Anabaptists and others who think that the Holy Ghost comes to men without the external Word, through their own preparations and works.

The Apology (Defense) of the Augsburg Confession. Article II (IV) - Justification

This is sufficient to see that justification by faith is the doctrine taught by the Bible, Luther, Melanchthon, and the Book of Concord editors, who considered themselves one with Luther in being “theologians of the Augsburg Confession.”

Calov and Gerhard used to be leveled against justification by faith -
until we had plenty of quotations to show that the theologians were
clearly arguing against a developing UOJ.

Masks for Unbelief

I was away from regular writing, on our recent roadtrip, so I thought about what themes to pursue. Someone observed, "Having a blog is like adopting a pet alligator. You have to feed it all the time." So I have to balance the feeding schedule with other pursuits, like paying for non-durable goods (groceries, utilities, and dog treats).

Apart from important notices on Moline Memories, I am only posting on Ichabod now, although some orphan blogs continue to gather views. One little college blog, which I started to show what can be done, now has 17,000 views. They decided to follow my example, and wrote up a list of procedures and policies, and never did a thing with it. The new editor wrote me, "All the graphics about our college end up being from your blogs."

My answer to her was, "Out-publish me and that will make mine go away on Google images searches." Someone how a team has not been able to do more than draw up a list of policies and procedures. So today - just to check - I googled images for the college and found one dominant link - mine. Similar complaints have been heard from various corners of Lutherdom - from the same sects that spent so much time trying to silence me.

I often look up various Lutheran sources to see if I can find anything worth writing about. The posts remind me of what we used to say at the movies, when most kids came in at random times and left when the movie reached the starting point - "This is where we came in."

Entertainment Evangelism illustrated.

The endless chatter about minor items, the fussing about high church details, and the slavish devotion to Fuller fantasies can be summed up as follows - They are all masks of unbelief.

The high church unbelievers can blog about the absolute necessity of this or that  - chalice, robes, etc. The Fuller unbelievers revel in their endless plagiarisms because they do not have the brainpower to engage in creativity on their own. The road to Rome clergy make a big show of their worshipful master piety while the Shrinkers advertise their passion for growth and reaching out, no matter how deep into the mud they must crawl. That may end up with DUIs and lawsuits, but never mind, they care passionately about this, and passion conquers all.
