What the JDDJ said, in effect, was that the condemnations of Trent and the Lutheran Confessions do not apply to the signatories of the JDDJ. A meaningless consensus if there ever was one. The JDDJ, along with the Catechism of the Catholic Church confirms Trent on every single point. The only place where Rome appears to have moved is in its universalism. No more will they dogmatically assert that one must submit to the Roman pope for salvation. That's because they no longer believe that one must be a Christian to be saved. Pastor Rolf David Preus |
GJ - Poor Rolfy One Note never gets past his confusion about the Atonement and Justification by Faith. He rolls them into one. If anyone objects, he rolfs them - a process of thorough verbal beatings until they surrender. In fact, he agreed with me when I sent him chapter five of Thy Strong Word, and also agreed on LutherQuest (sic) but they buried that in comments and he came back soon enough on his one note.
Rolfy could only sing one note
And the note he sings was this
OJ!
Poor Rolfy one-note
sang out with "gusto"
And just overlorded the place
Poor Rolfy one-note
yelled willy nilly
Until he was bleu in the face
For holding one note was his ace
Couldn't hear the brass
Couldn't hear the drum
He was in a class
By himself, by gum!

Universal Objective Justification is cowardly Universalism. The old-fashioned Universalists were very much like Christians and sang the same hymns, but they came to the same Pietistic - or is it Calvinistic - conclusion as Rolf. Everyone is forgiven, so everyone is saved.
Rolf will not go that far - in public. But by throwing himself at the LCMS-ELCA, he revealed no objections to their bedding down with Rome, Universalism, and all the malarky one gets when abandoning the Chief Article.
The main guy for UOJ was Knapp at Halle University, and he denied the Biblical basis for the Trinity. That did not keep Knapp from writing the most awful book of dogmatics, perhaps as bad as the new LCMS Dogma-tanic.
What made a Calvinist superstar, Woods, want to translate Knapp into English? Rationalistic Pietism was the rage in the 19th Century, and CFW Walther represented that fusion of rationalism (his dad and his university) and Pietism (his first Pietistic guru and his second one - Martin Stephan, STD - whom he raised to the episcopacy). So Woods gave us (or at least adopted) two words for this UOJ nonsense - Objective Justification and Subjective Justification. OJ is universal forgiveness and salvation - Universalism. SJ is acknowledging the truth of OJ, or in the words of Walther and JP Meyers, making a decision for OJ.
Romans 4 repudiates this view, which time and demagogues have made much worse.
Why appeal to Luther when the Holy Spirit has revealed this in so many places, especially in Romans 4, which the moronic Brief Statement, 1932 cites. That is like citing the US Constitution to support Stalinism.
Counted righteous, forgiven, if we believe... |
And Paul transitions to this, hardly an endorsement of Rolfy's Universalism -
