Some Kind Words about the Bushes

Our Crepe Myrtle bush can be seen with the flowers
turning to seed, which the Cardinals love.
No, this is not a political post. If it were, the title would be so different.

The proximity of our Eden to Derrick's Almost Eden means I have a lot of bushes to select at fantastic prices and vitality. A neighboring nursery means much healthier plants than those coming from a hardware, grocery, or Internet store. When Derrick went into business, I purchased such bushes as Beautyberry, Cethra, Gooseberry, Blueberry, Elderberry, Chaste Tree, and Blackberry.

Joel Salatin and Gabe Brown have taught me how valuable deep root systems are. "Leave a living root in the ground, as long as possible." I used to straighten my back and heave big weeds out of the ground - thistle, poke, and ragweed. Now I let the roots remain and prune the weed at the base. That is also a good way to treat other unwanted but difficult to remove plants - except maple. Give a maple seedling a chance and it will be rooted to the center of the earth.

There are two major reasons for treasuring berry and ornamental bushes.

  1. Most of the organic matter in the soil comes from root systems, and bushes grow extensive and deep roots that network with the fungi, soil creatures, and other plants.
  2. Rain infiltration is more important than the amount of rain, because run-off simply erodes the soil and goes down the drains.
This experiment shows what a grown bush will do for the soil. Fill a five-gallon bucket with water and pour it at the base of that bush. Unlike the newly planted one, the mature bush will direct the water deep into the soil, with no run-off. The roots and root-hairs are channels for the water, and gravity does the rest.

I used to credit organic matter primarily, because one pound of humus holds four pounds of water. That is great, but plant roots are key in building up the humus. Back to the roots, gardeners.

The promoters of cover crops point out that a thick selection of various plants (not just one type) will hold water in the soil during drought conditions. That seems counter-intuitive to us city-slickers, but the plants are engineered to serve as safety nets snagging the rain and holding the melting snow. Plowing and roto-tilling increase erosion, run-off, and hardening of the soil. Thus it is with all of mankind's follies that run counter to God's Creation.

Man breaks up the soil with expensive equipment, diminishing its value. The Creator breaks up the soil with root systems, increasing the fertility and productivity of the soil.

"The survey also revealed that during 2012-2013’s devastating drought in the Midwest, farmers using cover crops saw an average corn yield increase 9 percent and a soy yield increase 10 percent."

I have planted, Apollos watered; but God gave the increase. 1 Corinthians 3:6
According to one experiment on video, the best kind of cover crop includes up to 20 different plants. That also vastly increases the number and variety of beneficial insects.

Roots are always shedding cells, pushing through the soil, and nurturing all the microbes God designed to make soil fertile.

So even the weedy bushes have value, because they pump minerals up to the surface and drill down into the subsoil. A large weed will either have extensive shallow roots, more like corn, or taproots going down 15 to 30 feet.

The carbon cowboys among the farmers aim at putting as much carbon as possible into soil - just as the Jackson Rose Farm does. They plant crops that punch into the depleted soil, feeding microbes and earthworms. Instead of taking nitrogen away, as grain crops do, cover crops leave nitrogen and carbon in the soil to increase its fertility.

I will be multiplying roses soon, via planting stalks in potatoes, but for now, I am multiplying Beautyberries.

So Many Blessings from Bushes
Where do we start? Insects and birds love bushes. Insects seek shelter and reproduce, leaving the young behind. Birds control the number of insects and use the bushes for preening, resting, and spotting food from a safe place.

I have a fence of bushes on the end of two gardens in the back. In the bird area, I dump their dirty birdbath water on the bushes.

Bushes for Beauty and Food

Clethra is called pepperbush - Ruby Spice in this case.
"This late blooming beauty produces some of the most fragrant flowers in my garden; attracting butterflies, bees, hummingbirds and humans alike. But when most gardeners are out shopping in early spring, Clethra alnifolia is looking a bit scrappy. Lilac, azalea and roses are scooped up at garden centers by the cart-full, while the sweet pepperbush languishes in the corner like a high school wall-flower. It seems like her only fans are horticultural-geeks..."

 Norma Boeckler writes about Gooseberries
in her upcoming book.
We do not have this many Butterfly Bushes.
Their sweet smell attracts butterflies
and birds love to perch in them.

A row of Blueberries borders the Hosta garden,
which is filling in with Hostas as they get established.

Chaste Tree is known for attracting bees.
CT loves the sun and hates being watered.
I planted two Elderberries.
They are now in full bloom and look like this -
giant plants and flowers with tiny berries.
Beautyberry makes visitors stop and wonder, "What is that?
The flowers turn to berries that last all summer.

How Did WELS Extend to Jason Ewart the Left Foot of Fellowship,
After Mark Jeske Anointed the Bloke?

WELS was born orthodox Lutheran,
according to Mark Schroeder, MDiv,
but he is like Jay Webber, calling rationalistic Pietists
"orthodox Lutherans."

SP Mark Schroeder's buddy and classmate said WELS had a scandal blowing up every day, which does not shock me. Forgiveness-without-Faith (UOJ), adultery, Fuller's Church Growth, alcoholism, and scandals go well together.

Ichabod had so much material about Hope in Oconomowoc that I had to create a navigation page for myself and others. A reader helped me find "What's Cooking, Doc," published in 2009, about the previous and the new pastor.

So here is the problem. St. Mark Jeske is above and beyond reproach, because he is the son of a deceased Mordor professor, the grandson of a Pieper, a buddy of millionaires, and a board member of Thrivent. Like most WELS leaders, he does not give, but takes at every opportunity - from the taxpayers, from the synod, from the Siebert Foundation, and from the Thrivent board - salary, benefits, and juicy grants.

The parable of the Change or Die!r and the Means of Grace pastor.

Jeske was the leader of WELS Church and Change, until he organized the ELCA-WELS-LCMS Change or Die! He sneeringly introduced Ewart  at a Change or Die! coven in 2016. Ewart snarled and fumed about what a great parish he had, compared to that lowly other one - not named. Oh my. Did we just hear the Pharisee and Publican parable, with Ewart playing the Pharisee? I think  so. Justification by Works, but not a word about the Means of Grace.

Sidebar it was not Team Kolander but the Western District of Wisconsin -

Just FYI. Hope Oconomowoc (Jason Ewart) was in the Western WI District, not the SE Wisc. And so the DP who exercised discipline on him was Michael Jensen, not Dave Kolander. You can read DP Jensen's district convention report here: http://welswwd.weebly.com/uploads/1/0/4/1/10412170/wwd_dp_report_-_conference_2017.pdf

Hope, Dousman
It’s with sadness we report to our district conference the suspension of Hope Ev. Lutheran, Dousman, WI from membership in our district. This suspension took place on May 26, 2017 only after having been informed by Hope’s leadership several times that Hope’s voters had voted and were determined to retain Pastor Ewart despite his February 9th suspension from our ministerium. While Pastor Ewart had the right to appeal within 60 days of his suspension, he chose not to exercise that right. Like any other member of the district, Hope has the right to appeal this suspension and 60 days to exercise that right, although they have indicated they will not be doing so. We are saddened by the suspension of Pastor Ewart as our goal was to gently correct and restore a brother who had departed from evangelical Lutheran proclamation in favor of something else. We are saddened by misinformation as that only makes a heart-wrenching situation more difficult. We’re saddened that the district was never allowed the opportunity to speak to the members of Hope Lutheran. And, now we’re saddened by the suspension of Hope from our synod and the hurt this brings to many families. A copy of an Open Letter to Hope’s members has been sent to all district pastors and is available through them to anyone. Having not been allowed to come and speak to the membership directly, it’s an invitation for any member who would like to speak with us. We ask that you distribute this letter to any interested individual. When necessary for the care of souls, Circuit Pastors have additional resources. Regarding the suspension of Pastor Ewart, allow me to quote from that Open Letter to Hope’s members: First, what we say we say before Christ our Savior, who has called us to be faithful to Him, His Word and the precious souls He has purchased with His blood. It is love for Christ, His Word, Pastor Ewart and the members of Hope that has been our motivation from the start right up to the present. The matter is of the utmost importance because it involves Christ, His Church, His Word and His people. We, therefore, call upon Christ as our witness that we have been speaking the truth in love. Next, the suspension was not about traditional vs. non-traditional worship or congregational forms as some have suggested. Nor was the suspension about personal or congregational jealousy as others have suggested. The true nature and cause of Pastor Ewart’s suspension from our district’s ministerium is his departure from the evangelical Lutheran proclamation and his dishonesty in the matter. Please also note that this determination was not made lightly or hastily. This assessment was made by two different district presidiums and suspension came only after over a half-decade of observation, study and conversations. As we strive to be faithful to Christ and His Word, we know this raises legitimate questions of fellowship and pastoral care for those who serve near Hope, Dousman. Our best counsel during the weeks to come is loving patience. Our prayer is that in the weeks to come God grants opportunities for conversations with members from Hope who are seeking answers. May Christ grant and bless those conversations. No longer being in church fellowship with the members of Hope causes heartache. It’s sad not to be able to worship, pray, commune and work together and have a partnership in gospel ministry, especially when it involves family and friends. Still, even as we will no longer be in church fellowship with the members of Hope, the debt of Christian love remains. We continue love them deeply and pray for them, as we do for all God’s children. And, as we continue to meet and greet them in our daily lives may we do so with kindness and Christian love.

Words of Thanks • To Christ • To All of You • To Circuit Pastors • To VP Ewings, VP Brauer, and Sec Riediger Christ’s servant to you, Mike Jensen

 DP Jensen

Pastor Michael Jensen - Coordination - Email

Pastor Jensen was called to St. Mark’s in the fall of 1998 and currently serves as the congregation's coordinating pastor. He also currently serves as the District President of the Western Wisconsin District of our Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod.

Pastor and his wife Jane (Willitz) were married in 1988 and have been blessed with seven children, two daughters-in-law, two grandsons, and a granddaughter. Pastor Jensen is a 1988 graduate of Northwestern College of Watertown and a 1992 graduate of Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary, Mequon. Prior to coming to St. Mark’s, he served congregations in Green Bay, WI and East Brunswick, NJ.

Someone Steve Harveyed me - here is Team Kolander.

"Don we now our gay apparel,
fa-la-la-la-la-la-la-la-la."

Fake News Alert - It was not Kolander, but the rest of this is fun to read.

The new District President, who extended Ewart the Left Foot of Fellowship, was once elected to replace Wayne Mueller as First VP of the Wisconsin Sect. Kolander felt immediate remorse and resigned his post at the convention. Feeling the heat, the convention voted in the very guy they voted out - Wayne Mueller. That was about 2007.

The district Sanhedrin includes two (2) Kolanders.
How long was this tiddly-wink DP?
Mark Jeske was on the district Sanhedrin when he
helped with a Jewish funeral. Note that - kids.
Apostasy is a resume enhancer in the sect.

The old DP, Rutschow, was all in for Church Growth, so it is fascinating that the old boy left and - boom - Ewart was out. As I recall, Rutschow had a traditional, liturgical parish but forced CG on all the other parishes.
The out and in ceremony was rich with WELS tradition. Jon Balge, son of a Mordor professor was MC. Two Kolanders now serve on the district Sanhedrin. Jason Free--as in DP Free and American Missions Free--is the free staffer that Kolander gets for being a parish pastor and DP at the same time. That reminds me of the Episcopalians, where the bishop has a parish, but the staff does the work. WELS is notoriously Episcopal, lax about doctrine, devoted to man-made traditions.

Installation Service Pastor Jason - No longer works.
On February 8th, our new shepherd, Pastor Jason, was installed. The service took place at the Summit Town Hall at 3:00 pm. Many area pastor participated. It was an exciting time for our Hope members and friends to be able to welcome Pastor Jason and his family to Hope.
Pastor Jason is the one wearing the tie.

He is buddies with Rob Guenther, the WELS CP

who was frantic in protecting the Love Letter Pastor.

The former pastor was a chef, who subsequently resigned from the ministry. But Pastor Al Schleusener landed in China and came back to Minnesota.

GJ - Does anyone else suspect there is a database of Growth-Ideas-That-Work?

Marathon - Fennel for the Good Bugs

Fennel looks like Dill, Queen Ann's Lace,
Poison Hemlock, Parsley, Coriander,
and other members of the carrot family.

Yesterday I obtained some Fennel, whose Greek name is μάραθον (Marathon). The famous battle scene in Greek history was the Plain of Fennel. The location sounds more majestic as the Plain of Marathon, where the Greeks defeated the Persians.

The first Fennel runner raced from Marathon to Athens
to announce, "We won! Rejoice!"

This family of herbs and poisons is known for attracting beneficial insects. The plants are called umbellifers, or umbrella carriers, for their umbrella-like flowers. I had an enormous Poison Hemlock growing in the Hosta garden last summer. Once I figured it out, Almost Eden pointed out all the newborn Ladybugs crawling on the flowers. Although I liked having a Ladybug daycare center on the property, I did not like one associated with the death of Socrates.

I recalled one writer claiming Fennel was always crawling with beneficial insects, and one reader enjoyed the herb while in Italy. That sounded like a double blessing. As the expert gardening readers know, the whole carrot family is known for beneficial insects and butterfly attraction.

My method is to read about good additions to the garden - and pick up one at a time when visiting Walmart. I am aiming at beneficial insects (don't judge me). When plants are grown for pollinators in general or the bugs that attack pests, the result is a lot of activity in the garden - bees, butterflies, and parisitoid insects. The butterflies usually prefer one or two plants  which are perfect for their young, so Butterfly Bush may be good for adults, but not adequate for their young. Likewise, the best plants to build up the parisitoid insects are those that feed the adults who lay eggs where the pests gather.

Butterfly Weed is an attractive flower.
More people should grow it.

A famous example is the Monarch's need for the milkweed family, so I have Butterfly Weed growing in the backyard, carefully protected with mulch. Monarch caterpillars can feed on this plant and on milkweed, to grow strong and bad-tasting.

Birds know that Monarchs taste terrible, so Viceroys have a similar pattern to make animals think they are Monarchs. No one has explained to me how the birds all know this and how the Viceroys decided to use color to protect themselves. Instinct? Nature? Evolution? Creation best explains this one example of the millions of micro-miracles around us. The Monarch does not prove Creation to the rationalists, but the Word shows us how this happened - not by accident, but by design.

My mother lived with us in New Ulm. She knew where the milkweed was growing, from her walks, so she brought home several fat caterpillars on a stem of milkweed. We fed them milkweed leaves in their jars until they formed their jade coffins with golden nails. They dissolved themselves in that coffin and formed a butterfly inside. When they were ready to leave, we let them escape.

The Monarch young feed on bitter milkweed sap,
knowing this will save their lives.

The Viceroys skip the milkweed sap
and use the colors to protect themselves from birds.
But they feed on willows, which do make them bitter.
The birds know more about butterflies than most of us,
another conundrum.
