Six Inches of Rain - Or More - After I Watered the Front and Back

On Thursday, the clay soil was white from lack of rain, so I watered. On Friday we had at least three inches of rain, plus another three inches on Friday night. More sprinkling followed today and the water was standing in he backyard as the sun was setting.

More rain could come on Tuesday, which is great for roses, mint, berries, Butterfly Bushes, Crepe Myrtle, and Buckwheat.

We may even have enough berries this year to eat. The Triple Crown Blackberries are loaded with flowers, even in the deep shade behind the house.

Tonight I cut roses for the altar. Two Veterans Honor were in full bloom, so I took them to a neighbor.

For the altar I cut Queen Elizabeth roses and Easy Does It. Earlier I was frustrated with the short stems of Easy Does It, because it is a floribunda, more known for color than for long stems. Now the same plants are boasting long-stemmed roses with various degrees of bloom, from opening buds to prune-worthy.

The cover crop is Buckwheat, which I will sow more generously wherever we have mulch. Although Almost Eden told me Buckwheat can suppress weeds, now I understand how to use the plant to attract beneficial insects near the roses while improving the soil and supplanting weeds.

The worst and fastest spreading weed is Bermuda grass, which has the habit of extending itself and planting new plants from tip rooting. Therefore, sun and rain are a bonus for its growth. Now I can see how the shallow roots of Buckwheat simply deny a place for similar plants to grow.

Buckwheat has many virtues
and no vices for the Creation gardener.

The divine engineering of soil improvement is beyond comprehension, with so many complications. Here are some notable examples of God's Creation at work in ongoing soil renewal:

  • Fungus needs organic carbon for its growth, so the value of leaf and wood mulch is infinite. I carry large pieces of bark and wood chunks fallen from trees, simply because daily supplements add up.
  • Every single plant creates a little universe of energy and dependencies: fungus, bacteria, protozoa, nematodes, springtails, sowbugs, pillbugs, centipedes and millipedes, earthworms and moles.
  • Insects and spiders join the birds in an everlasting battle of the prey becoming prey, from the dead earthworm dragged away by the ants to the bird consumed by bacteria, mites, and creatures of decomposition.
  • Plant roots plunge into the soil and expand their network through fungi, adding carbon to grow the fungus that grows the plants in the soil.
  • Plants shed organic matter to feed the soil. Like the earthworm, the slug will shred the plant material, speeding its reduction to basic organic chemicals for the plants. Unlike the earthworm, the slug will merrily chew, disfigure, and destroy the young plants, which only escape by becoming stronger.
  • Good soil accumulates more carbon, more organic matter, and supports more roots that improve the soil and feed the vast soil population, from the microbes to the moles.
Buckwheat for Hover Flies

The adult Hover Flies need plants like Buckwheat
in the adult stage to lay eggs around the pests,
where in a role reversal, the eggs have pest insects for breakfast.

How ironic that most of us grew up and reached Social Security age without knowing or appreciating the tiny Hover Flies, aka Flower Flies, aka Syrphids.

Likewise, the tiny Ichneumon Wasp carries out its duties without our knowledge or appreciation.

Buckwheat, Mints, and the tiny weeds of the lawn provide extra pollen and nectar for adult beneficial insects. Most of us were taught Ladybugs are great and devour bugs while young and in maturity. But there are vast numbers of other beneficial insects that do this work.

Designed for a Purpose
Every single plant and animal has a purpose, which is shown in its design. Scientists often describe this in their studies, by showing the mutual dependencies, now explained by this strange escape clause: co-evolution. Together, in harmony, these unthinking living things developed ways to help each other so that one strengthens and protects the other. I consider that mighty intelligent of the fungus to help almost all the plants on earth. There are exceptions, like Goosefoot, but there are always exceptions.

Likewise, God has given each one of us a purpose and a design to achieve that purpose. Often we long to have the talents, looks, money, or circumstances of another person. We would like to wish away the difficulties, too. But the entire mix of good and bad helps us see our purpose and pursue our strengths.

Few would want my employment history, but that has allowed me to help hundreds of students and adults establish new or improved careers. I will be teaching a class tonight of adults who would rather work in a pleasant environment. Some are worn out by stress. I have done this for years. Suddenly, one university said, "Hey instructors, why not include career planning in your courses. Share some experiences and insights to help your students find fulfilling work."

If we can see the purpose of the tiny and overlooked Flower Flies, then we can certainly understand that God has a purpose for us.

Amended filing ramps up claims against Ecclesia | NWADG

Amended filing ramps up claims against Ecclesia | NWADG:

"Amended filing ramps up claims against Ecclesia
It alleges public-funds fraud

FAYETTEVILLE -- Plaintiff attorneys have raised the ante in a Freedom of Information Act lawsuit over documents that Ecclesia College in Springdale is refusing to release.

Travis Story, attorney for the college, in a renewed motion to dismiss filed late last week, contended that the documents sought by Jim Parsons, a former teacher and board member at the college, can't be released because they are covered in a protective order issued by a federal judge hearing the corruption case of former state Sen. Jonathan Woods, Ecclesia President Oren Paris III and Randall Shelton Jr. Former Rep. Micah Neal has pleaded guilty for his role in the case.

Arkansas legislators gave nearly $700,000 of taxpayers' money to the private Christian college in Springdale from the state's General Improvement Fund."

Looked Like Rain,Felt Like Drought on Thursday.
Downpour on Friday

The Cardinal was happy to work on field corn left on the ground.

Yesterday the weather scholars were divided about the rain situation. One site suggested days of rain ahead. The other predicted very little rain. Meanwhile, the clay soil was turning white and even the weeds were drooping.

I am committed to growing a robust Pokeweed in the bird feeding area. Parallel to the nuclear triad - US defense doctrine, this is a plan where the birds and insects will be supported by

  • a large, mature Butterfly Bush,
  • a younger Butterfly Bush with great potential, and
  • a Pokeweed that can grow to a height of 20 feet.

When all three are fully growing for the summer, I should need a machete to reach the two hanging feeders. And. That. Is. OK.

The lack of a waiting room diminishes the activity on feeders. Various do-gooders advise against anything near the feeder that would hide a cat preying upon birds. But we have a wide open rose garden that often boasts a living cat statue, lying in wait, needing no cover, anxious to bring about the fabled balance of nature.

Birds need water, food, and shelter, so I have five birdbaths with fresh water. The birds dirty the water, which I drain onto the bushes on the perimeter - Clethra, Gooseberry, Beautyberry. Every creature is happy.

The birds switch off with each other while feeding all day long. They land on the feeders, the six-foot bird-swing, the window ledge, and the Butterfly Bush. Various bumps and nudges make them hop to another feeder, another place to rest. Some birds with large bills (Grosbeaks, Cardinals) will crunch their sunflower seeds on the spot. Others like Chickadees will hammer their seed in their claws until opened and eaten. The Finches seem use their beaks to knock out 10 seeds for each one they eat. Squirrels, Cardinals, and Mourning Doves work over the ground for the rejected seeds.

The squirrels seldom climb for the food, since they have plenty on the ground.

I watered the backyard yesterday and later gave the main rose garden a thorough soaking. My reasoning - we could get adequate rain, even too much rain, but the new roses had to be soaked again and the mature roses would not object.

Butterfly Bushes and Pokeweed have drooping leaves. I gave them extra water and they perked up right away.

I have been dipping rainwater from the nearby barrel - for the new Crepe Myrtle growing near the kitchen window. The frequent baths have made it the fastest growing Crepe Myrtle of the five twigs I got on sale.

My special project is the young Butterfly Bush in the bird feeding area. I built logs around it, to protect it from collisions when I am feeding the birds. This also creates a good fence for holding organic matter. I raked grass clippings up and packed them around the bush. Then I added coffee grounds, which are not as magical as some pretend. However, they do hold water, so the grounds will increase the infiltration of rain as soil creatures pull them down. More blessings for the little Butterfly Bush are the cantelope rinds upside-down in the midst of the grass mulch. (Google's spell-checker changed cantelope to antelope and can't elope.)

The roses along the fence go some soaker hose water, and the front yard was sprinkled. And it rained hard all night. Plus - the rain started again this morning.

The squirrels ate one corn ear per day
and put empty ears near the bird-feeders,
to remind me of my duty to refill their special chair.

Water Infiltration
As Farmer Gabe Brown has said on his videos, cover crops prevent drought, flooding, and erosion by taking in water more efficiently.

When I pour water onto mature roses, it is like watering a drain in the street. The water soaks in, does not pool, and there is no runoff.

Now I have a lot of groundcover growing in the mulch, much of it Buckwheat.

I am also letting Wild Strawberries have their way in the rose garden, because birds will continue to plant them. The berries spread like weeds, protect the soil, and feed the birds that planted them in the first place.

WELS Features Wacko Covers for Meditations and BORAM

I could do better with Photofunia.

Someone has the mold filter on his graphic editing software.

I am wondering if the thumb is on the cover.
Now the kids will no longer wonder what it is like to have cataracts.

The Sermons of Martin Luther - Volume 1 Is in Production.
Volumes 2 and 3 Are Being Edited

Volume 1 of the Lenker series starts with Advent and includes the Day of Epiphany.

To correct one misunderstanding, these are sermons in one sense, but they were prepared to provide  sermon notes, a foundation for those pastors who did not even know where to start on a sermon. Some were so poorly trained that they only read the Scriptures for the day.

I have always thought that one paragraph of Luther' Sermons had enough insight in it for a complete sermon. I read one and post one for every service we have. The people who read this blog for the doctrinal material and Luther's Sermons - they are my target audience.

A WELS layman, years ago, asked me to write more about Justification by Faith. Those raised on Gausewitz and the KJV know understand that WELS-LCMS are practicing fraud and deceit. They want to have plenty of foundation to remind them of what they first learned as children and teens.

Back cover. Luther rejected "Objective Justification"
before the term was manufactured.

Janie Sullivan is preparing the series for Amazon printed books and Kindle e-books.

Norma Boeckler is illustrating each volume and the covers - working faster than I can keep up.

Virginia Roberts is proofing volumes, helped by various others.

Mrs. Ichabod is helping with the gems from each volume. The ninth volume will be a collection of all eight volumes of the gems, since each volume starts with a selection.

By Request, Some Copies of the David Preus UOJ Declarations

Rolf Preus and his brother Daniel edited
Justification and Rome, by their father,
but they do not want the book quoted.

 http://ichabodthegloryhasdeparted.blogspot.com/2016/02/luther-on-false-teachers-as-peacocks.html

The Calov and Quenstedt quotations come from Robert Preus' book, so he too is a "quoter of other people."

Both quotations are devastating repudiations of Objective Justification, which has various names. Whether called General Justificaiton, Objective Justification, or Universal Objective Justification, the dogma has one evil declaration in common - everyone is forgiven and saved without faith, without the Word, without the Means of Grace.

This single quotation shows the support of Martin Luther,
Melanchthon, and the Book of Concord editors.

Once Again, UOJ Pastors Are Aroused to Impotent Fury

Stormtroopers are known for what characteristic in the first Star Wars movie?

Answer - They fire dozens of rounds but always miss. They do not even wound Luke, Princess Leia, or Chewbacca.

Paul McCain quoted this with approval on his now extinct
Cyberbrethren blog, where he shamelessly plagiarized
The Catholic Encyclopedia.

The troop was alerted last night on Facebook, when Father Weedon, Court Preacher at the Purple Palace, offered a theological question about why some were saved and others were not. I responded that he should consult Paul McCain or Jack Cascione, who claim the entire world was already forgiven and saved.

Weedon did not respond, but ELS Pastor Ron Pederson and LCMS Pastor Tim Roth did.

Ron Pederson began with the old UOJ argument that "I cannot believe I am forgiven unless it is already true."

LCMS Pastor Timothy Roth immediately ordered me to erase my comments, as if Adriane Heins, managing editor of the LCMS magazine, could not bear the thought of people  writing about a question she began as a discussion question.

Soon LCMS Pastor Dave Preus began lobbing questions at me. It was like being stoned by death by popcorn. I suggested reading his grandfather's book, since he called me an OJ Denier and even worse - a "quoter of other people."

As I was quick to point out, Dr. Robert Preus denied the forgiveness and salvation of the entire world in his book. He made his own statements for Justification by Faith  and against Objective Justification, but he also quoted other people.

Confidential to the Preus siblings, who frequently object to my quotations from Justification and Rome - The whole idea of publishing books and essays is to elicit discussion about new or controversial ideas. The concept of a Preus Franchise - that objects to anyone using Robert Preus quotations - is foreign to higher education. theological discourse, and the Geneva Conventions.

Young Preus invited himself to begin questioning me, because the Preus Franchise considers itself divinely called to attack and silence Justification by Faith. But they never respond to germane answers about the Chief Article of Christianity.

Since I am a quoter of other people, I mentioned Paul teaching we are justified by the faith of Jesus in Romans, Galatians, and Philippians, a clear statement muddled by most modern translations, but not by the KJV.

Romans 3:22 Even the righteousness of God which is by faith of Jesus Christ unto all and upon all them that believe: for there is no difference:

May I quote Luther on this subject?

Not All Are Justified

87. And I cannot reject this interpretation; for St. Paul also speaks in like manner in Romans 5:18: “As through one trespass the judgment came unto all men to condemnation; even so through one act of righteousness the free gift came unto all men unto justification of life.” Although all men are not justified through Christ, he is, nevertheless, the only man through whom justification comes.

So it is also here. Although all men are not illumined, nevertheless this is the only light through which all illumination comes. The Evangelist has used this manner of speech freely, and had no fear that some might take offense because he says “all men.” He thought he would anticipate all such offense, and explains himself before and afterwards, and says: “The darkness apprehended him not, and his own received him not.” These words are sufficient proof to prevent anyone from saying that the Evangelist meant to say that all men are illumined; but he did wish to say that Christ is the only Light that lighteth all men, and without him no man is lighted.

Krauth - "Error loves ambiguities." And the Synods Delight in Duping Everyone

The post below deals with one aspect of UOJ versus Justification by Faith.

Missouri and WELS introduced the gravest error into their synods by promoting the rationalistic Halle Pietism of Stephan and Walther.

Now that some people are reasonably well informed about Justification by Faith, the synods are adopting more double-talk to hide the essence of their foul error - Universal Forgiveness and Salvation without Faith.

Here is one LCMS statement:
Faith alone

By His suffering and death as the substitute for all people of all time, Jesus purchased and won forgiveness and eternal life for them. Those who hear this Good News and believe it have the eternal life that it offers. God creates faith in Christ and gives people forgiveness through Him.

This can clearly be taken two ways. The red area certainly suggests the Universal Forgiveness of OJ -  via Stephan, Walther, and F. Pieper. But - if someone is not aware of the brassy heresies lurking in that language, the rest of the statement sounds OK for someone who seldom thinks of Pietism's silence on the Means of Grace, the efficacy of the Word, and the Sacraments.

WELS honors the Augsburg Confession in the breach,
repudiating its meaning while plagiarizing its language.
UOJists are all shameless liars.

The Bible and Lutherans teach that God judged all sinners righteous in his sight when Jesus Christ died on the cross for us. God declared everyone free from the guilt and punishment owed for our sins. The sinner receives this free gift of forgiveness, not by doing good deeds, but only by faith. A person is justified when he or she believes in Christ and his redemptive work. It is a gift from God.
Ephesians 2:8,9; 2 Corinthians 5:19; Romans 3:22-24; Romans 3:28; Romans 4:5; Mark 16:16 (Mark 16:16 is no longer in the WELS OFFICIAL NIV Bible and UOJ has been inserted in Romans 3:32).

WELS has 60+ essays in their files extolling
Justification by Faith and ignoring the
ministry of the Word.

***

GJ - The WELS statement should not fool anyone, but it will. "A person is justified when..." But they just confessed that God has absolved and saved everyone, thus merging the Atonement with Justification.  They contradict themselves when claiming "a person is justified when he or she or s/he is believes in Christ..."

They cannot reconcile their language - a house divided that cannot stand. The WELS unwillingness to cite "Objective Justification" shows their timidity in the face of objections from those who actually read a trustworthy Bible.

The WELS-Missouri-ELS-CLC (sic) combine is destroying itself through their promotion of Universal Objective Justification. The irony is vast - Missouri has never officially declared itself in bed with UOJ. There has been flirting, and yes, plenty of chambering. But there is no official catechism in the LCMS that teaches UOJ. CPH's KJV Catechism teaches Justification by Faith.

But the UOJ Stormtroopers make sure their dogma is enforced and promoted at all times.

Writing a Check for What Is Free.
Regenerative Farming's Lesson

 Gabe Brown is a believer
who argues for reviving the ruined soil.

Gabe Brown is a regenerative farmer whose videos are very well done, combining his experience with statistics to support regenerating the soil.

One of his favorite sayings is exactly what I think, "Why ignore free resources and then write a check to buy the same resources?" After Sassy's walk, I went outside to rake up dead grass to place around the base of the newer Butterfly Bush. I promised Mrs. Ichabod it would grow even higher than the other one, which reached 10 feet last summer. The grass and muskmelon remains will feed the soil creatures under the bush.
My landscaper friend says, "Add sugar to the soil." OK, I added fruit sugar.

Brown planted triticale and hairy vetch together as a cover crop, to gain from both plants. Triticale is a grain for forage, putting phosphorous into the soil. Hairy vetch is a legume, pulling nitrogen from the air and fixing it in the roots, through bacterial nodes. The two plants feed each other through the fungal network and build the soil.

You don't own me
Leslie Gore

Legumes - Wiki
"Legumes are notable in that most of them have symbiotic nitrogen-fixing bacteria in structures called root nodules. For that reason, they play a key role in crop rotation."

Brown is completely against plowing and rototilling the soil, because tillage harms the soil in many ways.

As a farmer, he has to plan his expenses and have a strategy that yields profits. Gardeners have an easier job than farmers, working only a tiny bit of land. But the goal is the same - why write a check for harmful methods that was free and yet thrown away?

Gardeners buy:

  1. Rototillers that harm the soil and while cursing the moles that stir the soil for free.
  2. Nitrogen fertilizers that harm the soil while telling me how they hate clover. And they pooh-poor manure, compost, and mulch.
  3. Pesticides that kill the beneficial bugs that control pests for free.
  4. Fungicides to kill all fungus, including the fungus that forms a nutritional network with plants.
  5. Herbicides that kill a few weeds while harming microbes and beneficial plants like Dandelions.

My basic approach is to build the soil all year, which is why I am fascinated by all aspects of the soil. The simplest goal is to have a lot of active earthworms, although they are merely a part for the whole, a great indication of soil health.

  • Water infiltration rates? Earthworms tunnel and increase those rates.
  • More usable nitrogen? Earthworms increase and concentrate nitrogen from their tiny kidneys and manure.
  • Composting mulch and crop residue? Earthworms are shredders that do this and digest the material via bacteria.
  • Birds in the yard, eating pests? Earthworms are delicious all-protein treats for birds that hunt bugs, and for moles that eat grubs while mixing the soil for free.
The first complaints I hear from gardeners are: clover, moles, and Dandelions.

Luther's Rebuke
One of Luther's best remarks describes the wealthy degenerates courted by Planned Giving Counselors. "They purchase Hell when they could have Heaven for free."

That would not sound so appealing if the Planned Giving Counselors were called Thrivent Salesmen Earning Commissions, would it? "Great news, I have a divine call to sell Thrivent Annuities to unsuspecting hicks and rubes!"

No one was more willing to pay for his horrible sins than Marvin Schwan. The ELS-LCMS-WELS leaders mined that guilt with savage greed and lupine cunning. Schwan donated his estate to his foundation, to fund wild hair projects in each synod and glorify his own name. UOJ is so handy, in erasing the Sixth Commandment to comfort the guilt-ridden wealthy. But Luther says that we cannot pay for sinful works with good works. In fact, the smallest sin cannot be paid for through our merits.

So WELS-ELS-LCMS are in the same state as apostate ELCA, taking away the comfort of the Gospel and replacing it with the false comfort of indulgences. Christ's Atonement is such a treasure that we can say, "He has not only paid for trivial sins, but also for great and terrible sins."

The next post will show how the UOJists are squirming in their own fouled nests, which they feathered with universal forgiveness without faith.

"Fat, drunk, and stupid amkes you a buddy in WELS and Missouri,
but it won't ever advance the Gospel."

Deplorable Plants Have Their Adorable Qualities

Cute, but no, leave the soil alone as much as possible.

Even recently, I saw weeds as deplorable interlopers, taking water and sunshine from the choice, chosen plants.

Gabe Brown changed my attitude by saying, "Keep living roots in the soil as long as possible. They add energy."

Before I saw weeds as good potential for turning into compost when the life-giving sunlight was cut off. But now I am humbled by the reminder that every plant invites all of Creation to give and take, to bargain for nutrition (debris for bacteria and earthworms) and to receive digested nutrition from fungus. One plant is growing miles of root hairs and energizing billions of microbes. As Brown said, plant roots provide most of the organic matter in the soil. The goal of regenerative farmers is to put as much carbon into the soil as possible, so the buzz-words are:

  1. Carbon Cowboys
  2. Soil Food Web
  3. Organic
  4. Regenerative
  5. Cover Crops
  6. Composting
  7. Earthworms
  8. Teaming with Microbes
  9. Teaming with Fungi.

No one has borrowed Creation Gardening from me, but I am not going to trademark a name so obviously nicked from the Scriptures. Google or YouTube the terms above and plenty of good illustrations will follow.

How the Deplorables Became Adorable
When I see a plant growing where it should not be, it is the abomination of desolation. Here are some that converted my primordial anger into benevolent feelings.

Dandelions
They are herbs brought over. Birds use their seed fluff. In terms of soil health, they puncture the lower levels and bring up calcium. No more useless collecting of egg shells in the false hope that they will add calcium to the soil. I cut them for greens (extra nutritious salad) but let them grow otherwise. They do not spread outrageously, and if they did, their sunny yellow flowers are cheerful, not threatening.

Poke
The Poke plant can be 20 feet tall and opens up its fast-growing branches to reach out in every direction. Pokeweed is prepared as salad in the South, but that means boiling it first - because of toxins. And the berries are also toxic to us. But where is the sin in sincerely, as the Music Man asked.

Poke has devilishly deep roots and is perennial. That is a high energy plant doing the work that fancy, expensive plants won't do. Pokeberries are loved by 60+ species of birds and animals, so it is a living, breathing, soil-improving, free bird-feeder. Secondly, its tiny flowers attract beneficial insects, so it is actually protecting the roses.

Wild Strawberries
I always liked them as little red rubies growing in the grass and thriving under the trees, but they invaded the rose garden too. Then I repented of the evil I said against them. They may surround a rose, but they are living mulch that energizes the topsoil and attracts poopy birds at the same time. If the birds graze and fertilize at the same time, the soil is gaining.

 Sow Thistle is sowicked.

Sow Thistle
I saw this plant growing in the front yard, and let it grow. The young plant looked like a dandelion but not quite. As it grew larger, I saw the tiny bristles, which meant - thistles! Burn, destroy, hack, pull!

This weed was almost shoulder high when I dug it out, along with a few others. The wildest impulses could not get me to let big thistles grow in the yard. Nevertheless, the weed is definitely a soil energizer.

The seeds might have blown in from Almost Eden, where some soil berms are allowed to grow wild, an interesting lab in botany. Sassy and I look it over several times a week, for different reasons.

One way to use a half-grown thistle is to dig/pull it out and compost it. I throw the treasure behind the bushes, where sunlight is blocked, or into the compost pile, which is in the shade. A weed clump is packed with soil creatures, good soil, and plant material ready to decompose.

Dutch White Clover spreads by seed and by the roots.

I Liked These Before the Lawn-lovers Did
Clovers -
They build nitrogen in the soil, feed the bees, and lend a bubblegum fragrance to the air. I have Dutch White Clover in the lawn and gardens, but I also broadcast Crimson Clover in the Wild Garden. Crimson Clover can grow very large, even waist high.

More than a rock song by Joan Jett and the Blackhearts,
Crimson Clover is valued as a cover crop.

Little Lawn Weeds -
They seldom last long. The purplish mint weed covered vast areas of lawn in the area and invaded our little patch of grass in the back. A few weeks later, it disappeared.

Others bloom with tiny yellow, blue, or white flowers. They fade quickly but they feed the beneficial insects, which are tiny and need tiny flowers.

Using broad-leaf weed killer will wipe these out early and leave bare patches in the soil. If the lawn is near trees, the bare patches often remain open, making the top soil too hot and vulnerable to wind and water erosion.
Creeping Charlie. Many weeds annoy us
by cheerfully spreading, no matter what we do.
Most man-made treatments hurt the soil and ultimately
benefit the soil.
