Christianity declining 50pc faster than thought –

Don't Look Now, Lutherans. It's the Same Story

Christianity in the UK is declining 50pc faster than thought.

Christianity declining 50pc faster than thought – as one in 10 under-25s is a Muslim - Telegraph:

A new analysis of the 2011 census shows that a decade of mass immigration helped mask the scale of decline in Christian affiliation among the British-born population – while driving a dramatic increase in Islam, particularly among the young.
It suggests that only a minority of people will describe themselves as Christians within the next decade, for first time.
Meanwhile almost one in 10 under 25s in Britain is now a Muslim.
The proportion of young people who describe themselves as even nominal Christians has dropped below half for the first time.
Initial results from the 2011 census published last year showed that the total number of people in England and Wales who described themselves as Christian fell by 4.1 million – a decline of 10 per cent.
But new analysis from the Office for National Statistics shows that that figure was bolstered by 1.2 million foreign-born Christians, including Polish Catholics and evangelicals from countries such as Nigeria.
They disclosed that there were in fact 5.3 million fewer British-born people describing themselves as Christians, a decline of 15 per cent in just a decade.
At the same time the number of Muslims in England and Wales surged by 75 per cent – boosted by almost 600,000 more foreign born followers of the Islamic faith.
While almost half of British Muslims are under the age of 25, almost a quarter of Christians are over 65.
The average age of a British Muslim is just 25, not far off half that of a British Christian.
Younger people also drove a shift away from religion altogether, with 6.4 million more people describing themselves as having no faith than 10 years earlier.
Secular campaigners said the new figures showed that Christianity had now dropped below “critical mass” making the case for disestablishing the Church of England stronger.
But the Church insisted that while there had been a significant drop in “nominal” Christians, the core of the Church remained firm.
Prof David Coleman, Professor of demography at Oxford University, said: “This is a very substantial change – it is difficult to see whether any other change in the census could have been remotely as big.
“But I wonder how far it reflects an overarching change in society where it is more acceptable more normal to say that you are not religious or are not Christian.”
Dr Fraser Watts, a Cambridge theologian, said it was “entirely possible” the people identifying themselves as Christians could become a minority within the next decade on the basis of the figures.
“It is still pretty striking and it is a worrying trend and confirms what anyone can observe - that in many churches the majority of the congregation are over 60,” he said.
Keith Porteous Wood, executive director of the National Secular Society, said the long-term reduction of Christianity, particularly among young people, was now “unstoppable”.
“In another 20 years there are going to be more active Muslims than there are churchgoers,” he said.
“The time has now come that institutional Christianity is no longer justified, the number has dropped below critical mass for which there is no longer any justification for the established Church, for example, or the monarch going through a religious ceremony at coronation.
“The expressions of optimism by the church are just completely misplaced.”
But a spokesman for the Church of England said: “These figures highlight the diversity of Christianity in this country today, something which has been increasing for decades and shows the relevance of Christianity to people from all backgrounds.
“These figures once again confirm that this remains a faithful nation and that the fall in the numbers identifying themselves as Christians is a challenge but – as you can see from the stability of Church of England attendance figures – the committed worshipping centre of the church remains firm.
“The challenge to the Church is to reconnect with the nominal.”

A religion of the Law will always appeal to the Old Adam when it lacks the Means of Grace. This is why Islam, Roman Catholicism, and the megachurches always boast of their inflated memberships. This is also why Christians should never make the foundational error that their local congregations must always grow in numbers. Furthermore, when they accept that, they will attempt to use whatever means necessary to achieve numerical growth. This includes, but is not limited to buying an overpriced stinky failed bar, replacing the altar with an orchestra pit, and having greeters wear bright yellow T-shirts which say "Ask Me".

One in five Latinos in the US are now Evangelical. If they leave the Evangelical faith, they typically don't go back to the RCC, but become unaffiliated. However, due to some legal and mostly illegal immigration, the number of Latinos in the pews in Catholic churches remains steady. So just as the RCC Counter-Reformation was bolstered by looted Aztec gold, the RCC is bolstered in America by the influx of illegals. Imagine that!

The article says that the new Hispanic pope (born to Italian immigrants) wants to stem the loss of Latinos to Evangelicals in America and S America:

Evangelicals now number about 20 percent of the Latino population, according to the National Hispanic Christian Leadership Conference.

"We are not picking up any trends of people returning to the Roman Catholic Church. If they don't become Protestant or Pentecostal, they typically become un-affiliated,” said Lugo.

Why Not Try Following the Word and the Book of Concord?

There he goes. Quack. Quack. There he goes. Quack.

narrow-minded has left a new comment on your post "Synodical Conference Junk Food":

Jesus, via Mark 16:16, tells us that belief and Baptism are required for salvation. Conversely, He tells us that unbelief damns. Where the SynCon intellectuals mess up is in saying that JBFAers teach belief as a work of man. That's where the Means of Grace come in. Our belief is passively received through Word and Sacrament. The only part we can play regarding Faith is to reject the Word.

I'm just a dumb layperson, but this ain't rocket science. The above quote from Prof. Scaer is nonsense. What is sad is to see seminarians follow this guy around like a bunch of teenage girls at a rock concert. Try the Book of Concord, Fort Wayne, since LCMS pastors swear to abide by it as the proper exposition of Scripture.

GJ - Faith is that trust which is created and sustained by the Holy Spirit in Gospel, whether it is the invisible Word of teaching and preaching or the visible Word of Holy Baptism and Holy Communion.
The passive aspect is repeatedly emphasized by the Apostle John in using the expression "to receive."

KJV John 1:11 He came unto his own, and his own received him not. 12 But as many as received him, to
them gave he power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on his name: 13 Which were
born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of God.

KJV John 1:16 And of his fulness have all we received, and grace for grace. 17 For the law was given by
Moses, but grace and truth came by Jesus Christ. 18 No man hath seen God at any time; the only
begotten Son, which is in the bosom of the Father, he hath declared him. [GJ - literally, He is the exegete of the Father]

KJV John 17:8 For I have given unto them the words which thou gavest me; and they have received them,
and have known surely that I came out from thee, and they have believed that thou didst send me.
[GJ - The old NIV translates the verb as "accepted" rather than "received." The difference is crucial, since "accepted" is generally used in the sense of making a decision for Christ.]

The SynCons cannot discuss the Christian Faith in terms of the efficacy of the Word in the Means of Grace. Therefore, they capitulate to various forms of Enthusiasm and fall prey to every fad that marches by - off they  waddle.

Synodical Conference Junk Food

Pastor emeritus Nathan Bickel has left a new comment on your post "Reading Chemnitz Two Natures of Christ and Luther'...":

Ichabod -

You correctly observed about the SynCon (the Lutheran synods), the following:

".......They are like grocery stores where the real food is gone, so they substitute candy, junk food, and soda pop to make up the difference - because those food groups are so popular with the young."

Question:

Are you suggesting that one of my former seminary professors, David Scaer, substitutes junk theology for Luther and Chemnitz? How dare you! Shame on you! Don't you know that Dr. Scaer is the epitome of the new and correct teaching of justification?

I will be waiting for your apology.........

GJ - Soon, Pastor Bickel - just after the SynCons retract and repudiate UOJ.

Reading Chemnitz Two Natures of Christ and Luther's Pentecost Sermons

Martin Chemnitz is ignored more than Luther,
and Luther is ignored entirely today.

LCMS President Jack Preus signed my copy of Chemnitz' Two Natures of Christ at the Indianapolis convention.

Chemnitz is like Luther. One can randomly open a book by either author and find great insights about Biblical truths and how to study theology.

The Chemnitz insight that I keep reading over is a simple concept. No one should introduce new categories or distinctions in theology. Nothing describes Universal Objective Justification better than that.

The precious SynCon essays have to admit that

  • General Justification,
  • Objective Justification,
  • Universal Objective Justification, and
  • Subjective Justification

are all new labels. Recent American Lutheran history shows that UOJ is leaven introduced by Stephan, Walther and their fellow Pietists, a minority opinion until 1932, when it was canonized in the Brief Statement.

Two sources prove that justification by faith was a prevalent teaching in the LCMS and WELS in the early days, in spite of Walther's popish rule over the Synodical Conference.

One is the German catechism of 1905, where justification by faith is clearly taught, without any hint of UOJ. That continues today with the KJV catechism still being printed by Concordia Publishing House - "over 2 million sold!"

The other is the original Gausewitz catechism, used by the Synodical Conference and dominant in WELS for many decades. WELS thought the Gausewitz had to be expanded in 1956 and replaced by the horrid Kuske UOJ catechism later.

Pastor Papenfuss himself, Mr. Kokomo, admitted to the families he kicked out that he never heard of UOJ until he got to Mequon.

Recently, Paul Kuske, the former District VP in Michigan, caused a fuss by calling out Mequon for teaching UOJ and turning out another batch of false teachers in the graduating class. DP John Seifert stripped Kuske of his emeritus status at a conference meeting, which really made a big deal of the issue. This recent episode is proof of someone being in the synod structure and yet continuing in justification by faith, which was taught earlier.

Nostalgia buffs claim that the Synodical Conference began falling apart after 1932 because Francois Pieper died. A better explanation for that apostasy is the elevation of the 1932 Brief Statement to canonical status and the insidious takeover of Missouri and WELS by the UOJ Storm-Brownies.

Both synods went through periods of the historical-critical method taking over Biblical studies and no one officially noticing. Both moved rapidly into fellowship with the LCA/ALC. They also suffered from Pentecostalism and now the endless assaults of the Church Growth/Emergent Church screwballs.

Missouri and WELS are so bankrupt in doctrine that they sponsor idiotic Emergent Church congregations as if that were perfectly natural for "conservative" Lutherans.

They also denounce ELCA, gay ordination, and abortion on demand while working closely with ELCA, whose practices they supposedly find abhorrent.

The SynCons have reached the point where they can no longer teach the next generation of pastors or youth because they have no grasp of Biblical, Lutheran doctrine. They are like grocery stores where the real food is gone, so they substitute candy, junk food, and soda pop to make up the difference - because those food groups are so popular with the young.
