God's forgiveness is not a self-existent abstraction floating around in the supernatural world, waiting to be grabbed by our self-generated faith. God's forgiveness is, rather, firmly rooted in and dependent on the gracious love of the Father, and the righteousness and obedience of the incarnate Son. And this forgiveness cannot be received in faith by fallen humanity apart from the converting and regenerating work of the Holy Spirit. So, a belief in the mystery of the Trinity is always implicit in a belief in God's forgiveness, even if it is not consciously being reflected upon in every moment. No Trinity = no forgiveness.
