More Foods Beneficial to Health

Apples - their benefits include

  • Heart protection and weight loss
  • Lowers risk of diabetes and stroke
  • Bone health

Pears - their benefits include

  • Similar to apples in many categories
  • Good for gut health, which can be good from healthy foods or bad from popular foods

Oranges - their benefits include

  • Vitamin C
  • Lowers blood pressure
  • Good for the eyes and against macular degeneration
We have managed to turn fruits into desserts, but the best qualities come from the raw fruits. The juicer salesmen like to promote their product, but I wonder how many use the pulp, which is a major part of the benefits thereof.

Fuhrman, who aims against high blood sugar, also wrote about heart health.

I suspect that this overlaps the blood sugar book, which often mentions heart benefits. This is likely much more focused because anyone older than 65 has some issues, whether arrhythmia, blood pressure, or pain. I ordered a copy and will write about it in the future.

Fad diet books and named diets, plus their expensive shipped foods, always repulsed me. OK, it was a good excuse to stick to the dessert diet. Fuhrman seems to be balanced and objective in his work.

I accompanied Christina to a weight loss doctor's office. Their entire focus was Opti-fast, a product based on milk. Yes, people lost dozens of pounds and gained all of it back - plus another 10 or 20. What helped her most was having fish (before the nuclear reactor did its job in Japan) and salad. She lost 25 pounds and gained 40.

I believe supplements are good overall, but there are are dozens promoted as incredibly necessary and absolute liberation from all ills. If we eliminate junk food, excess sugar, and fake sugar, we have the appetite to enjoy good food - long on vegetables, nuts, fruits, and seeds.

Brussels sprouts have always been one of my favorites, and I grew them in New Ulm. They are left on the stalk to be sweetened by a freeze. Carrots also sweeten with a freeze, and kale stays green and fresh under snow. Unfortunately, I told the kale tale to Christina, so she had me dig it out from under the Midland snow. She did not have daily supplements of donuts growing up, so she had to fill up on vegetables.
