I have been wondering, "How did the all the Lutheran synods and abusive sects become so much like ELCA?"
WELS is a good example, because I had members who told me. WELS boasted about using the KJV when the future ELCA synods - and Missouri - went going over to the modern snip and clip Scriptures.
I know that WELS once taught Justification by Faith. One recent example is the former Michigan District VP Paul Kuske in trouble for complaining about the Mordor graduates leaving school with Objective Justification. I have other sources too.
Gausewitz (Justification by Faith) was used until the Kuske Objective Justification Catechism came out. There are septuagenarians who remember being taught the Chief Article from the Gausewitz.
As I explained to various people, it only takes a few generations of new guys graduating from the seminary to replace the old guys retiring or leaving the synod. That is why they did not want the ministerium to vote on the latest and gratingnest NIV. Their last review was only aimed at recent graduates, all trained in the glory of the NIV, which really was better the even worse trash to follow.
The old NIV has disappeared from printing, denominational religious materials (which should not be called Christian at all), the NIV's own website, and the hymnals. Yes, the ESV is 1% better than the NIV, but that is the difference between spoiled milk and milk crawling with maggots.
On the Missouri side, Walther did everything possible to promote OJ, even rigging an election (WELS take note - oh, you do that too?) to get F. Pieper as Professor of Walther Dogma.

So the LMCS history is roughly Walther-Schwan-Pieper. Walther's OJ, Schwan's JBFA, Pieper's hybrid of OJ hiding among the JBF and efficacy terms.
