WELS Martin Luther College Will Close:
Pastor Track Back in Watertown.
Teachers at Willowcreek's Little College

MLC students managed to make a video even more offensive than Party in the MLC.

Long ago, this blog predicted that three tiny colleges would not continue to exist within one day's driving distance.

After spending $30 million on merging DMLC and NWC, closing Prairie, and building up NW Prep (now Luther Prep), and blowing $8 million on a chapel at MLC - WELS is closing the New Ulm campus.

The two causes are poor enrollment and declining financial support.

The pastor track will return to Watertown, giving hope to the bartenders who cater to minors. That will also re-create Northwestern College.

The teacher track will move to Willowcreek's Little College in Milwaukee.

WELS has accomplished so much with the largest charitable gift ever donated to a religious group - the Schwan avalanche, in case you do not know.

MLC Student from Borneo:

As much as I might hate to say it, that's a pretty viable route for WELS to take. I don't think it'll happen within this school year, but I can conceive it happening perhaps in 2011-2012.

Yet another point adding validity to the claim: Some students at MLC are a lot like unpaid faculty (myself included). For example: suppose I happen to be attending a real college like UW Madison. I could demand about $250 for being an actor in a musical. Being an audio-video technician for a play could get me anywhere from $200-$1000 per performance. Hymn Festival (just earlier this evening) could get me at least $50 compensation for being an accompanist.

I'm doing all of this and more for free. By my calculations, after less than two months of school, Martin Luther College should owe me well over $1000 for services rendered. And don't even get me started on how many thousands in scholarships I didn't get because I'm attending MLC. My freshman year at WLC could have been free.

---

Greg, moving the pastor track back to Watertown should not be a big issue. The buildings are already there. All they have to do is either call it Northwestern College again or even Luther College depending on the legalities of the name. I bet most of the profs that would be teaching the future pastors would love to go to Watertown. I just can not see MLC lasting more than a couple of school years. New Ulm just does not have anything there or around it close for these students to do or work for.

I think by what you are hearing it is in the works.

GJ - Someone told me MLC students are talking about the post - "another lie."

Trevor has left a new comment on your post "WELS Martin Luther College Will Close: Pastor Trac...":

@GJ: The difference between this blog entry and others is that this is a report of news/fact whereas your other entries are commentary. I tend to agree with your commentary because of my understanding of God's Word. But because this report is not supported by any evidence, it has the same credibility as reports in the National Enquirer about Oprah having lesbian relationships with Gayle Kink and Diane Sawyer.

To you (sic) later point, just because the school has contingency plans does not mean that it's failing. As you well know, there are many CG people in the WELS. These people have it in their craw to close ALL of the synod schools. Hopefully those people are kept in check (or better shown the error of their ways) but nonetheless it's prudent to be aware of and plan for many possibilities.

@Brett Meyer: I don't see how your question for me is germane to the thread. That being said, I did not identify as gay at that time.

GJ - It is a fact that this was passed on to me, and the source was in a position to know. If I blabbed about sources, I would not have any, would I? Someone not believing me is not exactly an argument or refutation.

If nothing happens, I will say, this is the person who said it. Since there is a witness, it cannot be denied. Either it is an actual plan or it is a falsehood fed to me through someone. The statistics argue for the campus closing. The need for parochial teachers is declining rapidly. The current SP newsletter has money being spent elsewhere rather than shoring up the schools.

KJV Ephesians 5:15 See then that ye walk circumspectly, not as fools, but as wise, 16 Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. 17 Wherefore be ye not unwise, but understanding what the will of the Lord is. 18 And be not drunk with wine, wherein is excess; but be filled with the Spirit; 19 Speaking to yourselves in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord; 20 Giving thanks always for all things unto God and the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ; 21 Submitting yourselves one to another in the fear of God.

KJV Matthew 22:1 And Jesus answered and spake unto them again by parables, and said, 2 The kingdom of heaven is like unto a certain king, which made a marriage for his son, 3 And sent forth his servants to call them that were bidden to the wedding: and they would not come. 4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: 6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them. 7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city. 8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. 9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. 10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests. 11 And when the king came in to see the guests, he saw there a man which had not on a wedding garment: 12 And he saith unto him, Friend, how camest thou in hither not having a wedding garment? And he was speechless. 13 Then said the king to the servants, Bind him hand and foot, and take him away, and cast him into outer darkness; there shall be weeping and gnashing of teeth. 14 For many are called, but few are chosen.

Twentieth Sunday After Trinity
Lord God, heavenly Father: We thank Thee, that of Thy great mercy Thou hast called us by Thy holy word to the blessed marriage-feast of Thy Son, and through Him dost forgive us all our sins; but, being daily beset by temptation, offense, and danger, and being weak in ourselves and given to sin, we beseech Thee graciously to protect us by Thy Holy Spirit, that we fall not; and if we fall and defile our wedding-garment, with which Thy Son hath clothed us, graciously help us again and lead us to repentance, that we fall not forever; preserve in us a constant faith in Thy grace, through our Lord Jesus Christ, who liveth and reigneth with Thee and the Holy Ghost, one true God, world without end. Amen.

Wedding Garment – Righteousness of Faith
Jesus spoke in parables so the actual followers would be trained in the Gospel. The crowds were enormous, because many people came out of curiosity, or hostility, or the need to be entertained with miracles.
Jesus converted people through the Word, and instruction followed. More than once, people fell away (John 6) because they did not want to hear the explanation of His Word.

This parable is an example of an interesting short story that would fly past anyone who does not understand its meaning. The story makes sense until the end. When the guest is tossed into eternal torment for not dressing properly – that appears to be in conflict with everything before.

Jesus explained His parables to His disciples, who were often puzzled.

The setting is clear, because the King and His Son are the Father and Jesus. The wedding feast is a common theme in the New Testament, with Jesus as the groom and the church as the bride. This is also found in Paul and Revelation.

The Father/Son relationship is especially important in John’s Gospel, but it is also emphasized in Matthew:

KJV Matthew 11:27 All things are delivered unto me of my Father: and no man knoweth the Son, but the Father; neither knoweth any man the Father, save the Son, and he to whomsoever the Son will reveal him.

The wedding feast is the Kingdom of God. The servants (apostles, missionaries, pastors) go out to invite people through the Gospel. The Holy Spirit calls people to faith through the Gospel:

The Third Article.
Of Sanctification.
I believe in the Holy Ghost; one holy Christian Church, the communion of saints; the forgiveness of sins; the resurrection of the body; and the life everlasting. Amen.
What does this mean?--Answer.
I believe that I cannot by my own reason or strength believe in Jesus Christ, my Lord, or come to Him; but the Holy Ghost has called me by the Gospel, enlightened me with His gifts, sanctified and kept me in the true faith; even as He calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian Church on earth, and keeps it with Jesus Christ in the one true faith; in which Christian Church He forgives daily and richly all sins to me and all believers, and at the last day will raise up me and all the dead, and will give to me and to all believers in Christ everlasting life. This is most certainly true.
The Word of God answers clearly how people come to faith (Isaiah 55; Romans 10) and why people fall away (Mark 4 – Parable of the Sower). The Scriptures do not answer why some are saved and not others.

This parable, like many other passages in the Bible, teaches us how often God proclaims the Gospel to the entire world, how patiently He works, and also how ultimate refusal results in His wrath.

Matthew 22:4 Again, he sent forth other servants, saying, Tell them which are bidden, Behold, I have prepared my dinner: my oxen and my fatlings are killed, and all things are ready: come unto the marriage. 5 But they made light of it, and went their ways, one to his farm, another to his merchandise: 6 And the remnant took his servants, and entreated them spitefully, and slew them.

The first stage of the invitation is an exact parallel of the start of the Christian Church. God’s gracious invitation to the Kingdom resulted in persecution in Jerusalem, especially because so many were converted. The Jewish opponents drove the Christians out and killed their leaders. A few years later, the foolish war with the Roman Empire resulted in the siege of Jerusalem, its utter destruction, the execution or enslavement of everyone trapped in the city.

7 But when the king heard thereof, he was wroth: and he sent forth his armies, and destroyed those murderers, and burned up their city.

Jesus warned His followers more than once that Jerusalem would face His wrath. Even though the crucifixion took place there, God called people to faith through the apostles. But they persecuted the Christian Church and drove them out. They decided to take on the Roman Empire and brought about their own destruction, since God uses foreign powers to chasten the unrepentant.

Matthew 22:8 Then saith he to his servants, The wedding is ready, but they which were bidden were not worthy. 9 Go ye therefore into the highways, and as many as ye shall find, bid to the marriage. 10 So those servants went out into the highways, and gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good: and the wedding was furnished with guests.

These verses correspond to the Gentile mission. The first part of the apostolic mission was aimed at the Jews, and it was very successful, in spite of the persecution in Jerusalem. Unlike the so-called mission pastors of today, who only want to gather other Christians from nearby churches, the apostles went to the heart of the opposition. They went to the synagogues and preached to them the way they preached on Pentecost.

KJV Acts 2:36 Therefore let all the house of Israel know assuredly, that God hath made that same Jesus, whom ye have crucified, both Lord and Christ. 37 Now when they heard this, they were pricked in their heart, and said unto Peter and to the rest of the apostles, Men and brethren, what shall we do? 38 Then Peter said unto them, Repent, and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the remission of sins, and ye shall receive the gift of the Holy Ghost.

KJV Acts 4:10 Be it known unto you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom ye crucified, whom God raised from the dead, even by him doth this man stand here before you whole. 11 This is the stone which was set at nought of you builders, which is become the head of the corner.

Through this message of Law and Gospel, they brought many people to repentance and faith in Christ. This only inflamed the opposition, so the synagogues were closed to them. That did not mean that the mission to the Jewish people ended or stopped. To this day Jews are converted by the Word because all their teaching is the foundation of the Christian faith. One of my birthday greetings came from a Jew who became a Lutheran pastor, one of the orthodox confessors in his synod – and pounded for that very reason. We once had a conversation about the liturgy being “invented in the Middle Ages” – an argument from Church Growth. The Jewish worship service today is entirely liturgical, even high church in its own way. The Christian Church simply continued that Word-based tradition. That is why a sincere Jewish believer who looks past the polemics will find the Christian faith the fulfillment of everything in the Old Testament. Everything in the OT prepares him for faith in Christ, because faith in the crucified Messiah is embedded in the books of the Old Testament.

gathered together all as many as they found, both bad and good:
The initial mission was not a failure. It was a roaring success, but opposition and indifference made the Gospel rain move on, as it does. For instance, today in America, very little Gospel is taught, although we have more churches than the rest of the world put together. We have enormous endowments. A little sect like WELS has something like $100 million, not counting individual congregations and separate entities, like Christian Life Resources, which had $2 million the last time I looked.

The gathering of the Kingdom includes “the good and the bad.” As Luther said, more people go to heaven from the scaffold than from anyplace else. They do not have the luxury of denying their sinfulness.

When people are told they are already forgiven, born forgiven, as UOJ teaches, there is no reason for Holy Baptism, the Keys, or faith. Although the Word is powerful, man’s substitution of other thoughts is not. “My thoughts are not your thoughts,” says the Lord in Isaiah 55.

This gathering is shown as all-inclusive because the Gospel transcends all cultures. The reason the apostolic church stretched from England to India was the disciples’ conviction that they were teaching the truth. They followed Jesus in His basic sermon – to convict the world of sin, because they did not believe on Him (John 16).

KJV John 16:6 But because I have said these things unto you, sorrow hath filled your heart. 7 Nevertheless I tell you the truth; It is expedient for you that I go away: for if I go not away, the Comforter will not come unto you; but if I depart, I will send him unto you. 8 And when he is come, he will reprove the world of sin, and of righteousness, and of judgment: 9 Of sin, because they believe not on me; 10 Of righteousness, because I go to my Father, and ye see me no more; 11 Of judgment, because the prince of this world is judged.

God’s grace is shown in the lack of works-requirements and merit in forgiveness and salvation.

Faith in Christ is forgiveness, as Jesus said. Not believing is a sin, as He said Himself in John 16:9.

Christianity grew to be the world’s largest religion because people preached and taught the Gospel Word with abandon. In casting the Word in all directions, they planted faith in the hearts of those who listened with seriousness and sincerity. The large net drew in all kinds, some looking for a way to make money or a reputation from this religion.

This last section seems to turn the story upside-down, but that is only true for unbelievers. Believers can recognize the familiar theme of “putting on Christ” and righteousness as a robe.

The robe image is good because it is outside and covers us. The righteousness of Christ is outside of us and covers our sin.

Some enter the banquet with some knowledge of the Gospel but still clinging to merit, the Law, or works.

Augustine wrote many fine theological works, the best in the Christian Church – next to Luther’s.

When his mother died, he wrote that he hoped she would not point to her merit as a reason to enjoy eternal life but to lay her claims upon Christ alone.

"In the Word of God there is not only a speaking about God, but in and through His Word God Himself speaks to us, deals with us, acts upon us. Therefore the Word of God is also an efficacious means of grace through which God regenerates, converts, and sanctifies man. This efficacy the Word of God possesses always; it is always united with the Word, never separated from it. The effect which God intends through the Word is indeed not always attained, but this is owing to no lack of efficacy in the Word, but solely to the resistance of man; for man has the power to resist God and to prevent His Word from accomplishing the effect which He intends." E. Hove, Christian Doctrine, Minneapolis: Augsburg Publishing House, 1930, p. 27.

"To the Lutheran the sermon, as the preached Word, is a means of grace. Through it the Holy Spirit calls, gathers, enlightens, and sanctifies the whole Christian church on earth. It is a constant offer of pardon; a giving of life, as well as a nourishing and strengthening of life. In the Reformed churches the sermon is apt to be more hortatory and ethical. It partakes more of the sacrificial than of the sacramental character. The individuality of the preacher, the subjective choice of a text, the using of it merely for a motto, the discussion of secular subjects, the unrestrained platform style, lack of reverence, lack of dignity, and many other faults are common, and are not regarded as unbecoming the messenger of God in His temple. Where there is a properly trained Lutheran consciousness such things repel, shock, and are not tolerated." G. H. Gerberding, The Lutheran Pastor, Minneapolis: Augsburg Publishing House, 1915, p. 278.

"Is the success of preaching as a means of grace conditioned by the observance of similar principles by the preacher? Undoubtedly. For it is not preaching itself, but the Word as preached which is a means of grace. This demands not only that nothing be preached but what comes directly or indirectly from Holy Scripture, but also that the contents of Holy Scripture be preached in due proportion and in the proper order." Henry Eyster Jacobs, A Summary of the Christian Faith, Philadelphia: General Council Publication House, 1913, p. 293.

"The doctrine of the means of grace is a peculiar glory of Lutheran theology. To this central teaching it owes its sanity and strong appeal, its freedom from sectarian tendencies and morbid fanaticism, its coherence and practicalness, and its adaptation to men of every race and every degree of culture. The Lutheran Confessions bring out with great clearness the thought of the Reformers upon this subject." "Grace, Means of," The Concordia Cyclopedia, L. Fuerbringer, Th. Engelder, P. E. Kretzmann, St. Louis: Concordia Publishing House, 1927, p. 299.

Heresy
"Paul says that people can, in some way, 'adorn the doctrine' (KJV). Does that mean adding anything to the Gospel, thereby making the Means of Grace more 'effective'? Of course not. But it does mean that a Christian, a Christian slave in the original context, can discredit the Gospel--and thus erect a human barrier--through actions and words that contradict the profession of faith." Lawrence Otto Olson, D. Min., Fuller Seminary, "A Response to Gregory L. Jackson, Ph.D.," Christian News, 3-28-94, p. 23. Titus 2:9-10

"Faithfulness is the standard by which God judges those he calls into the public ministry. That faithfulness may or may not be 'effective' in terms of visible results; results are up to God, not us. But part of faithfulness ought to include striving to be as 'effective' as we can be in the methods that we use to take the Means of Grace to people." Lawrence Otto Olson, D. Min., Fuller Seminary, "A Response to Gregory L. Jackson, Ph.D.," Christian News, 3-28-94, p. 23.

Even More Questions about The SORE

Shrinkers are so cute...
when they are babies.

The SORE continues to raise more questions about its questionable mission.

How can they share the same old WELS church building with another emergent, Rock R Roll church?

Christ the Rock will have services at 10 AM, and The SORE will entertain the teens at 5:30 PM.

Will Ski hang his floozy photos in the hallway, or would that offend the other Rock N Roll church?

Will the popcorn machine and soda fountain move to the old WELS church?

"OuterEdge opens its doors for a four-hour looksy

What: OuterEdge Stage open house
When: Today (Wednesday, June 16) 3 p.m.–7 p.m.
Where: 303 N. Oneida Street, downtown Appleton

Appleton’s newest entertainment venue, OuterEdge Stage, opens it doors to the public today for a four-hour open house; the showing will consist of light shows (from approximately a half-million dollar lighting rig) and tours of the building every 30 minutes. CEOs and married couple Ben and Lyssa King resurrected the church-turned-concert venue, with the goal of drawing musicians who haven’t been performing in the Appleton area.  The Kings’ plan is to book national acts weekly with favorite local acts sprinkled in for good measure.

As for the open house, spectators will be able to envision the Kings’ elaborate plans once they witness the restoration and renovations made to the one-time church. "

In this photo, taken approximately one month ago,
OuterEdge was just beginning to install their lighting
rig. Today’s open house should reveal a much different
look.

“We really wanted to maintain the history and beauty of the original building,” said Lyssa King, “yet we have modernized the proscenium with a state-of- the-art High End System lighting rig, creating an old world meets new technology feel…This is a great opportunity for people to come and get a firsthand look at what the Stage has to offer.”

Reader question: There is a building permit on the door of the old Mount Olive church at the corner of Oneida and Franklin, behind the library. I see some activity. Maybe a new wedding chapel?
Answer: The building at 303 N. Oneida St., Appleton, is coming back to life as the OuterEdge Stage in late May.

It can be used for weddings, recitals and even debates, but its primary use will be for live faith-based concerts, including contemporary Christian groups, country singers and national acts.

Benjamin and Lyssa King are owners of OuterEdge, which focuses on film production for faith-based musicians' videos. They’ve also worked in the commodities business.

“We want to promote independent faith-based artists. We’ve talked to people in Nashville and they said ‘You’re doing this in Appleton, Wisconsin?’” said Benjamin King. “There’s nothing like this in Nashville.”

“We’re both pastors’ kids, so we always wanted to do something faith-based,” said Lyssa King.

The couple bought the building and are currently renovating it to restore the building's rich original details.

“We tried to preserve everything we could,” said Benjamin.

They replastered and repaired the dentil molding, acanthus leaf details and coffered medallion ceiling. Original sconces and chandeliers are being restored and re-hung.

They’ll also boost the building's technical capabilities for filming and doing high-definition live streaming on their Web site, www.outeredge.com. All told, they’ll spend more than $1 million.
Mount Olive Evangelical Lutheran Church was built in 1921, just two years after Lawrence’s Memorial Chapel. The two spaces have a similar feel with their grand stained glass windows.

Mount Olive moved to Appleton’s north side in 1970. This building later housed Christ the Rock Community Church, a theater and the Hmong Alliance Church.

GJ - Tim Glende has been so harsh and unloving about unionism on his cheap, imitation blog. Everyone knows what a farce that is, to practice unionism with every sect in the land while denouncing it.

But this is another step into the land of farce. Jointly operating a building with another emergent church will be a special witness to everyone in town. The old WELS church will need two signs on it, two entertainment schedules, and two sets of Rock N Roll instruments.

Poor old Doug Englebrecht will have even more to explain to everyone.

In for a nickel, out for a dime.

I counted three offices being worked on in the old WELS church. Do they have another one downtown in that luxury office building? Half their membership seems to be on the staff.

"I find it very interesting that The CORE will have their offices on the SIXTH FLOOR of a 12 story building in Downtown Appleton.  http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-172139280652780403#"

Church and Changers need a lot of staff to do the work while the Mequon graduates plans on how much they will grow. More growtivational pep talks will be needed in Appleton.

Remember, readers - this pustule came from Mark Jeske, who stands astride two synods at once:

The SWD and Rev. Jeske - Pastor Reeder

For the past several years in the South Wisconsin District (SWD) of the Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod (LCMS), I’ve noticed a growing number of conferences and retreats where Rev. Mark Jeske of Time of Grace ministries located in Milwaukee (which airs on the net (http://www.timeofgrace.org/index.php), on the radio, and on TV) is one of the speakers.  The SWD endorses him, as his ‘ministry’ is also now a Recognized Service Organization (RSO) of the LCMS
(http://www.lcms.org/pages/internal.asp?NavID=15614).  The program even airs on the LCMS’ radio station from St. Louis, KFUO.

What’s interesting, as others have noted (i.e. http://steadfastlutherans.org/?p=6919), is that Jeske is:
1)      of the Wisconsin Evangelical Lutheran Synod (WELS)
2)      not an LCMS pastor
3)      Promotes the unscriptural ‘principles’ and doctrine of the ‘church growth movement’ (CGM) (For further study on these, see http://www.ctsfw.net/media/pdfs/huebelcgm.pdf as a starter)
LCMS and WELS are not in fellowship.  Joint ministries here are in the least confusing to members and nonmembers of both church bodies.  Joint ministries here are also conflicting, esp. because the Church Growth Movement so advocated by Jeske is in conflict with our doctrine, and also the official teaching of WELS.

A genuine concern for doctrine asks the question ‘why’?  Since CGM teaches what is contrary to Scripture, why is such teaching given air on the LCMS station KFUO, advocated by at least one district (the SWD), and even now an RSO of the LCMS?

Perhaps the LCMS as a whole has forgotten the concern of God’s people, that of faithfulness to His Word, rather than seeking after acceptance by the world and its ways.  Faithfulness calls for obedience to the Lord’s Word and avoidance of those who teach otherwise:

Note those who cause divisions and offenses, contrary to the doctrine which you learned, and avoid them. For those who are such do not serve our Lord Jesus Christ, but their own belly, and by smooth words and flattering speech deceive the hearts of the simple (Romans 16:17-18)
May the Lord keep the LCMS and her members watchful, observant, and bold in the face of false doctrine and opposition, even with those within her own body!

Deceiving People into UOJ:
Watch Jay Webber Stumble into Another Pratfall

ELS Pastor Jay Webber, Open Communion Advocate, ELS Bored of Doctrine.

Floyd Luther Stolzenburg's Masonic, Church Growth congregation was given credibility
by its worship fellowship with the ELS.
Floyd - You Owe Jay.

Here is the quotation in context, from the Apololgy (Defense) of the Augsburg Confession, IV:

103] Here and there among the Fathers similar testimonies are extant. For Ambrose says in his letter to a certain Irenaeus: Moreover, the world was subject to Him by the Law for the reason that, according to the command of the Law, all are indicted, and yet, by the works of the Law, no one is justified, i.e., because, by the Law, sin is perceived, but guilt is not discharged. The Law, which made all sinners, seemed to have done injury, but when the Lord Jesus Christ came, He forgave to all sin which no one could avoid, and, by the shedding of His own blood, blotted out the handwriting which was against us. This is what he says in Rom. 5:20: "The Law entered that the offense might abound. But where sin abounded, grace did much more abound." Because after the whole world became subject, He took away the sin of the whole world, as he [John] testified, saying John 1:29: "Behold the Lamb of God, which taketh away the sin of the world." And on this account let no one boast of works, because no one is justified by his deeds. But he who is righteous has it given him because he was justified after the laver [of Baptism]. Faith, therefore, is that which frees through the blood of Christ, because he is blessed "whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered," Ps. 32:1,104] These are the words of Ambrose, which clearly favor our doctrine; he denies justification to works, and ascribes to faith that it sets us free 105] through the blood of Christ. Let all the Sententiarists, who are adorned with magnificent titles, be collected into one heap. For some are called angelic; others, subtile, and others irrefragable [that is, doctors who cannot err.] When all these have been read and reread, they will not be of as much aid for understanding Paul as is this one passage of Ambrose.

But Jay chooses to chop the quotation his way, to make Ambrose and Melanchthon appear to endorse his crazy-quilt UOJ opinion:

http://www.intrepidlutherans.com/2010/10/justification-discussion-continues.html#comments

David Jay Webber said...
Recalling that forgiveness and justification are esentially synonymous concepts, the Book of Concord does in fact testify explicitly to the "objective" side of justification - and also to the "subjective" side of justification, with which it indissolubly coheres - by means of an approved quotation from St. Ambrose, in Ap IV:103: "But, when the Lord Jesus came he forgave all men the sin they could not escape, and canceled the decree against us by shedding his blood [Colossians 2:14]. This is what he says: 'By the Law sin abounded, but grace abounded by Jesus' [Romans 5:20], since after the whole world became subject he took away the sins of the whole world, as John bears witness, saying: 'Behold the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world!' [John 1:29] Let no one glory, then, in his own works, since no one is justified by his deeds, but one who is just has received a gift, being justified by Baptism. It is faith, therefore, which sets us free by the blood of Christ, for he is blessed whose sin is forgiven and to whom pardon is granted [Psalm 32:1]."
Rev. Paul A. Rydecki said...
And on that helpful explanation by Pr. Webber, I think it's time (really, this time!) to close this thread here. We'll get back to talking about Justification. But the comment thread threatens to simply become an argument that perpetuates confusion. As I said in a previous comment, it is possible to overcomplicate the gospel message to the point that gospel comfort is lost. When we come back to this subject, we will try to lay out the simple gospel truth in as clear a way as possible, along with the dangers which we must guard against in this article of faith.

GJ - I remember Jay making fun of WELS' repeat-after-me training, calling Mequon - The Love Shack. He even described WELS as standing for Weaker Evangelical Lutheran Siblings.

Funny, I do not see his name on the list of the Intrepid Lutherans. I knew he was bulling his way onto the blog when he began contacting Douglas Lindee and whining about something to Lindee. In case you want to know how WELS/ELS pastors obey Matthew 18, that is how.

The Intrepids (sic) betrayed everyone when they failed to offer any witness to the truth at the Northern Wisconsin (Anything Goes Englebrecht) District meeting in June. They were utterly silent. One witness to their cowardice was completely disgusted. That person provided the information that the manly men were supposed to act upon.

The Intrepids (sic) could have published Englebrecht's letter, but they did not. They could have published the lawyer's 29 page indictment of Glende's conduct at St. Peter, Freedom - but they did not.

I have always enjoyed watching scaredy-cats at work. They hiss and fluff their fur, then run for the trees. Rydecki began with an excellent post on the pathetic synodical sermon, touching on its ridiculous perversion of justification. I believe he is also the one who posted about Luther directing people to the Word, an excellent post and a fine antidote for the poison coming from synodical leaders.

Overnight Rydecki became the expert on UOJ, then Webber's cheerleader for false doctrine and sophomoric argumentation.

In case anyone wonders, WELS pastors are famous for holding two contradictory opinions at the same time. No one double-talks more than they, probably from the years of abuse in the Wisconsin education brain-washing system. Missouri and the ELS have done the same, but WELS would earn the gold medal if there is ever an Olympic event in lying.

Rydecki is simply the front-man for the whole group. Others are no different. They will knock UOJ in one email and defend it in the next.

I like what one old Thrivent salesman said, "If a man has two stories, he does not believe either one."

They are terrified of being accused of Ichabod influence, but they leak information to me to avoid any heat. Meanwhile, I am ordered, "Do not quote our blog."

I know the UOJ thugs began beating up people as soon as they listed their names with IL.

The big joke - IL could be called the Committee To Re-Elect the President. Yes, the idea behind IL was to counter the influence of Church and Change and to support Schroeder's re-election.

Once again, I have to ask - Where is the witness of this supposedly confessional Lutheran? Job security for false teachers is better than ever before. No false doctrine of any kind has been identified. That will never happen, because the Daddy Warbucks might be offended, and the relatives of the false teachers would be outraged.

More Questions about The SORE

I find it very interesting that The SORE will have their offices on the SIXTH FLOOR of a deluxe 12 story building in Downtown Appleton.

Someone in business raised an eyebrow over The SORE moving out of its spiffy building and into an old, abandoned church.

"Only 18 months there? Leases for large buildings are multi-year, not 18 months."

I added that the move seemed sudden, to be completed in a few weeks.

We both asked out loud, "Did The SORE lose its lease and get thrown out?"

Ski's comments suggest an effort to cover up the real story - keeping the same website (!) and the same phone number (!) in a small town. That is the good part.

WELS members should demand a full accounting of the money blown on this "experiment." Hagedorn had a lavish retirement party at a luxury hotel, but he is not about to tell what he knows about The SORE's finances.

WELS follows the Roman Catholic model. Members should "pray, pay, and obey."

The BORE - Kicked Out of the Popcorn Cathedral of Rock By Another Emergent Church - CCV!
Ski/Glende Lies Exposed

Another emergent New Age church has grabbed the Big Picture movie theater from The BORE. The newspaper did not name the church, which seems to be buying the building. Anti-confessional entertainment churches are better at being anti-confessional entertainment centers.

God's justice is only beginning to show His wrath. The BORE decided to compete with 20 other WELS congregations in a rather small city, skimming members in the name of outreach and transforming lives. ELCA has the same non-confessional motto.

Therefore God is smiting WELS with an emergent church pushing The BORE out.

I would rather call the travesty Entertainment Evangelism. There is no evangelism involved, but Ski and Glende are quite entertaining.

Fame is fleeting, as the slave used to whisper to the Roman general during his triumph. Or, as we say today - it is a short trip from The Crab House to the outhouse.

Every story reveals a new lie about The BORE, which was supposedly started as a separate congregation from St. Peter's, Freedom. Wink. Wink.

The local paper says otherwise:

"The Core, a (sic) outreach ministry of St. Peter Lutheran Church in Freedom, has leased the building for the last 18 months and its final service there is Oct. 31."

St. Peter's and The BORE, both known for their deceitfulness, are verbally uniting the "two congregations," as one of its members stated in his blog.

Glende refused to answer questions by email. Perhaps he imagined the answer might be forwarded to others. Or maybe he was just hiding the truth.

Glende claims on his anonymous blog, derisively called Fake-O-Bod, that he is against deception and unionism.

The BORE arranged for new digs. I believe it might have been available when they took over their magnificent and expensive Popcorn Cathedral of Rock. The new location looks desolate and beaten up. A church was there before and failed? And then another operation failed? The BORE is failing. Everyone knows it.

"Meanwhile, The Core’s Sunday night worship service is moving to OuterEdge, a former church building at 303 N. Oneida St. that has been extensively restored and is now a multi-use facility/concert venue with a stage. The Core’s first service there is Nov. 7."

OuterEdge is emergent church, as far as I can tell. They have stage events scheduled, so will The BORE and OuterEdge merge? Both confess the truths of Craig Groeschel, I imagine.

I do not have this figured out. Appleton does seem as topheavy with emergents as it is with WELS.

Meanwhile, Deputy Doug Englebrecht is meeting with the Conference of Pussycats to see how they can silence the hapless, gutless Intrepid Lutherans - who are too busy to post comments. They have stuff to do.

Welcome to The BORE's new old building.

The building the CORE is moving into was the home of Mount Olive Lutheran Church (WELS) from the early 1920s until around 1980. This building is also one block from St. Pauls Lutheran (WELS). Also, the church that bought the movie theater and CORE's old home is Christ's Church of the Valley-- ccvappleton.com

Loving God passionately
Loving each other deeply
Loving our world to Jesus

At CCV we reject the doctrine of baptismal regeneration (that baptism in and of itself causes salvation).  We also don’t believe baptism is some afterthought of our salvation.  Rather, we affirm that baptism is the divinely ordained vehicle for us to express our personal faith and entrust our lives to Christ.  This is why scripture can affirm salvation by grace through faith apart from works and yet portray water baptism as the standard Biblical occasion when the repentant believer would receive from God the forgiveness of sins and enter into a new relationship with Christ on the basis of faith.

WHAT WE BELIEVE ABOUT COMMUNION

Communion (the Lord’s Supper) is one of the ways we worship God as we remember Jesus’ sacrifice on the cross and His resurrection from the grave.  CCV follows the example of Acts 20:7 and weekly engages in Communion.  We believe the bread and the juice are symbols of Jesus’ body and blood and that as a believer partakes, they proclaim the death of the Lord until He comes.  At CCV we do not subscribe to the idea that during Communion Jesus is re-sacrificed - but we do believe that through this sacrament, God meets with us in a unique and special way.

We ask that all who would partake of Communion with us at CCV be people who have surrendered their lives to Christ in faith and that they examine their hearts prior to partaking.

Welcome!

Welcome to Christ's Church of the Valley, an exciting non-denominational Bible believing church here in the Fox Cities!  I am so glad you have stopped by to check out our ministry!  My prayer is that you will be led more and more to encounter God in all of his power and greatness!

Election - From the Formula of Concord, 1580

The Means of Grace are central in the Scriptures, Luther, Chemnitz, and the Book of Concord.
Calvinistic UOJ cannot be found until the era of Pietism.
Bethany Lutheran Chapel, Photoshop by Norma Boeckler.

Article XI - Election
5] The eternal election of God, however, vel praedestinatio (or predestination), that is, God's ordination to salvation, does not extend at once over the godly and the wicked, but only over the children of God, who were elected and ordained to eternal life before the foundation of the world was laid, as Paul says, Eph. 1:4. 5: He hath chosen us in Him, having predestinated us unto the adoption of children by Jesus Christ.

7] However, the beginning and cause of evil is not God's foreknowledge (for God does not create and effect [or work] evil, neither does He help or promote it); but the wicked, perverse will of the devil and of men [is the cause of evil], as it is written Hos. 13:9: O Israel, thou hast destroyed thyself; but in Me is thy help. Also: Thou art not a God that hath pleasure in wickedness. Ps. 5:4.

8] The eternal election of God, however, not only foresees and foreknows the salvation of the elect, but is also, from the gracious will and pleasure of God in Christ Jesus, a cause which procures, works, helps, and promotes our salvation and what pertains thereto; and upon this [divine predestination] our salvation is so founded that the gates of hell cannot prevail against it, Matt. 16:18, as is written John 10:28: Neither shall any man pluck My sheep out of My hand. And again, Acts 13:48: And as many as were ordained to eternal life, believed.

9] Nor is this eternal election or ordination of God to eternal life to be considered in God's secret, inscrutable counsel in such a bare manner as though it comprised nothing further, or as though nothing more belonged to it, and nothing more were to be considered in it, than that God foresaw who and how many were to be saved, who and how many were to be damned, or that He only held a [sort of military] muster, thus: "This one shall be saved, that one shall be damned; this one shall remain steadfast [in faith to the end], that one shall not remain steadfast."

10] For from this [notion] many derive and conceive strange, dangerous, and pernicious thoughts, which occasion and strengthen either security and impenitence or despondency and despair, so that they fall into troublesome thoughts and [for thus some think, with peril to themselves, nay, even sometimes] say: Since, before the foundation of the world was laid, Eph. 1:4, God has foreknown [predestinated] His elect to salvation, and God's foreknowledge [election] cannot fail nor be hindered or changed by any one, Is. 14:27; Rom. 9:19, therefore, if I am foreknown [elected] to salvation, nothing can injure me with respect to it, even though I practise all sorts of sin and shame without repentance, have no regard for the Word and Sacraments, concern myself neither with repentance, faith, prayer, nor godliness; but I shall and must be saved nevertheless, because God's foreknowledge [election] must come to pass. If, however, I am not foreknown [predestinated], it helps me nothing anyway, even though I would occupy myself with the Word, repent, believe, etc.; for I cannot hinder or change God's foreknowledge [predestination].

11] And indeed also to godly hearts, even when, by God's grace they have repentance, faith, and a good purpose [of living in a godly manner], such thoughts occur as these: If you are not foreknown [predestinated or elected] from eternity to salvation, everything [your every effort and entire labor] is of no avail. This occurs especially when they view their weakness and the examples of those who have not persevered [in faith to the end], but have fallen away again [from true godliness to ungodliness, and have become apostates].

God in His purpose and counsel ordained [decreed]:

15] 1. That the human race is truly redeemed and reconciled with God through Christ, who, by His faultless [innocency] obedience, suffering, and death, has merited for us the righteousness which avails before God, and eternal life.

16] 2. That such merit and benefits of Christ shall be presented, offered, and distributed to us through His Word and Sacraments.

17] 3. That by His Holy Ghost, through the Word, when it is preached, heard, and pondered, He will be efficacious and active in us, convert hearts to true repentance, and preserve them in the true faith.

18] 4. That He will justify all those who in true repentance receive Christ by a true faith, and will receive them into grace, the adoption of sons, and the inheritance of eternal life.

19] 5. That He will also sanctify in love those who are thus justified, as St. Paul says, Eph. 1:4.

20] 6. That He also will protect them in their great weakness against the devil, the world, and the flesh, and rule and lead them in His ways, raise them again [place His hand beneath them], when they stumble, comfort them under the cross and in temptation, and preserve them [for life eternal].

21] 7. That He will also strengthen, increase, and support to the end the good work which He has begun in them, if they adhere to God's Word, pray diligently, abide in God's goodness [grace], and faithfully use the gifts received.

22] 8. That finally He will eternally save and glorify in life eternal those whom He has elected, called, and justified.

27] This, however, is revealed to us in the manner as Paul says, Rom. 8:29f : Whom God predestinated, elected, and foreordained, He also called. Now, God does not call without means, but through the Word, as He has commanded repentance and remission of sins to be preached in His name, Luke 24:47.

29] And this call of God, which is made through the preaching of the Word, we should not regard as jugglery, but know that thereby God reveals His will, that in those whom He thus calls He will work through the Word, that they may be enlightened, converted, and saved. For the Word, whereby we are called, is a ministration of the Spirit, that gives the Spirit, or whereby the Spirit is given, 2 Cor. 3:8, and a power of God unto salvation, Rom. 1:16. And since the Holy Ghost wishes to be efficacious through the Word, and to strengthen and give power and ability, it is God's will that we should receive the Word, believe and obey it.

41] For few receive the Word and follow it; the greatest number despise the Word, and will not come to the wedding, Matt. 22:3ff The cause for this contempt for the Word is not God's foreknowledge [or predestination], but the perverse will of man, which rejects or perverts the means and instrument of the Holy Ghost, which God offers him through the call, and resists the Holy Ghost, who wishes to be efficacious, and works through the Word, as Christ says: How often would I have gathered you together, and ye would not! Matt. 23:37.

42] Thus many receive the Word with joy, but afterwards fall away again, Luke 8:13. But the cause is not as though God were unwilling to grant grace for perseverance to those in whom He has begun the good work, for that is contrary to St. Paul, Phil. 1:6; but the cause is that they wilfully turn away again from the holy commandment [of God], grieve and embitter the Holy Ghost, implicate themselves again in the filth of the world, and garnish again the habitation of the heart for the devil. With them the last state is worse than the first, 2 Pet. 2:10. 20; Eph. 4:30; Heb. 10:26; Luke 11:25.

48] Moreover, this doctrine affords glorious consolation under the cross and amid temptations, namely, that God in His counsel, before the time of the world, determined and decreed that He would assist us in all distresses [anxieties and perplexities], grant patience [under the cross], give consolation, excite [nourish and encourage] hope, and produce such an outcome as would contribute to our salvation. Also, as Paul in a very consolatory way treats this, Rom. 8:28. 29. 35. 38. 39, that God in His purpose has ordained before the time of the world by what crosses and sufferings He would conform every one of His elect to the image of His Son, and that to every one His cross shall and must work together for good, because they are called according to the purpose, whence Paul has concluded that it is certain and indubitable that neither tribulation, nor distress, nor death, nor life, etc., shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus, our Lord.

50] This article also affords a glorious testimony that the Church of God will exist and abide in opposition to all the gates of hell, and likewise teaches which is the true Church of God, lest we be offended by the great authority [and majestic appearance] of the false Church, Rom. 9:24. 25.

64] For that we neither can nor should investigate and fathom everything in this article, the great Apostle Paul declares [teaches by his own example], who, after having argued much concerning this article from the revealed Word of God, as soon as he comes to the point where he shows what God has reserved for His hidden wisdom concerning this mystery, suppresses and cuts it off with the following words, Rom. 11:33f : O the depth of the riches both of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are His judgments, and His ways past finding out! For who hath known the mind of the Lord? that is, outside of and beyond that which He has revealed to us in His Word.

76] Moreover, the declaration, John 6:44, that no one can come to Christ except the Father draw him, is right and true. However, the Father will not do this without means, but has ordained for this purpose His Word and Sacraments as ordinary means and instruments; and it is the will neither of the Father nor of the Son that a man should not hear or should despise the preaching of His Word, and wait for the drawing of the Father without the Word and Sacraments. For the Father draws indeed by the power of His Holy Ghost, however, according to His usual order [the order decreed and instituted by Himself], by the hearing of His holy, divine Word, as with a net, by which the elect are plucked from the jaws of the devil. 77] Every poor sinner should therefore repair thereto [to holy preaching], hear it attentively, and not doubt the drawing of the Father. For the Holy Ghost will be with His Word in His power, and work by it; and that is the drawing of the Father.

95] From this our explanation, friends and enemies, and therefore every one, may clearly infer that we have no intention of yielding aught of the eternal, immutable truth of God for the sake of temporal peace, tranquility, and unity (which, moreover, is not in our power to do). Nor would such peace and unity, since it is devised against the truth and for its suppression, have any permanency. Still less are we inclined to adorn and conceal a corruption of the pure doctrine and manifest, condemned errors. 96] But we entertain heartfelt pleasure and love for, and are on our part sincerely inclined and anxious to advance, that unity according to our utmost power, by which His glory remains to God uninjured, nothing of the divine truth of the Holy Gospel is surrendered, no room is given to the least error, poor sinners are brought to true, genuine repentance, raised up by faith, confirmed in new obedience, and thus justified and eternally saved alone through the sole merit of Christ.

GA College (ELCA) Feeling the Heat Over Their MLC-Like Skits

GA Video Scandal

"I am a member of the Gustavus Board of Trustees, having just completed a three-year term as chairman.

You all probably are aware of the old saying that those who talk don't know and those who know don't talk. I'm going to violate this maxim, if only just a little.

The student-created skits depicted in the videos were not appropriate. Period. We were not aware of them before a student posted the videos on YouTube. The skits will not be part of orientation again. While they seem to represent the views of some individuals, they assuredly do not represent a college perspective."

GJ - He wrote more and people commented. In contrast, MLC uploaded their video again, after pretending to take it down. In the interim, they created a FB page and played the video there.

This reminds me of a conversation with a WELS member. He told his family, "We have lost the Gospel."

The WELS/ELS approach is to ignore the implications of their apostasy, spin the story with fake contrition or outright denial, and bury any leakers in slime, leaving them in the deep-freezer of shunning.

"26] Therefore true, saving faith is not in those who are without contrition and sorrow, and have a wicked purpose to remain and persevere in sins; but true contrition precedes, and genuine faith is in or with true repentance [justifying faith is in those who repent truly, not feignedly].

27] Love is also a fruit which surely and necessarily follows true faith."
Formula of Concord, Article III, The Righteousness of Faith. SD.

The WELS/ELS response to their lies being exposed is to punish those who tell the truth. Is this godly contrition? The abuse, which is taken for granted and accepted as good corporate behavior, shows they lack the Gospel entirely. In telling everyone they are already forgiven, they deny God's grace in the Means of Grace. They mention the Means of Grace, but the Word and Sacraments are nothing more than a little red caboose at the end of their long train of jumbled opinions.

As one pastor said of the Mrs. Tabor's murder, "That was a long time ago" as if those who mourn the victim could forget. How many have given up on the Christian faith upon seeing the Big Wise Ones cover up adultery and murder? Causing the little ones to stumble - could that apply to synod officials, memory-loss pastors, and get-along-go-along laity?

KJV Mark 9:42 And whosoever shall offend one of these little ones that believe in me, it is better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and he were cast into the sea.

The Righteousness of Faith - Selections From the Formula of Concord

Martin Chemnitz, Formula of Concord, 1580, Article III, The Righteousness of Faith.

4] In opposition to both these parties it has been unanimously taught by the other teachers of the Augsburg Confession that Christ is our righteousness not according to His divine nature alone, nor according to His human nature alone, but according to both natures; for He has redeemed, justified, and saved us from our sins as God and man, through His complete obedience; that therefore the righteousness of faith is the forgiveness of sins, reconciliation with God, and our adoption as God's children only on account of the obedience of Christ, which through faith alone, out of pure grace, is imputed for righteousness to all true believers, and on account of it they are absolved from all their unrighteousness.

6] This article concerning justification by faith (as the Apology says) is the chief article in the entire Christian doctrine, without which no poor conscience can have any firm consolation, or can truly know the riches of the grace of Christ, as Dr. Luther also has written: If this only article remains pure on the battlefield, the Christian Church also remains pure, and in goodly harmony and without any sects; but if it does not remain pure, it is not possible that any error or fanatical spirit can be resisted. (Tom. 5, Jena, p. 159.) 7] And concerning this article especially Paul says that a little leaven leaveneth the whole lump. Therefore, in this article he urges with so much zeal and earnestness the particulas exclusivas, that is, the words whereby the works of men are excluded (namely, without Law, without works, by grace [freely], Rom. 3:28; 4:5; Eph. 2:8-9), in order to indicate how highly necessary it is that in this article, aside from [the presentation of] the pure doctrine, the antithesis, that is, all contrary dogmas, be stated separately, exposed, and rejected by this means.

9] Concerning the righteousness of faith before God we believe, teach, and confess unanimously, in accordance with the comprehensive summary of our faith and confession presented above, that poor sinful man is justified before God, that is, absolved and declared free and exempt from all his sins, and from the sentence of well-deserved condemnation, and adopted into sonship and heirship of eternal life, without any merit or worth of our own, also without any preceding, present, or any subsequent works, out of pure grace, because of the sole merit, complete obedience, bitter suffering, death, and resurrection of our Lord Christ alone, whose obedience is reckoned to us for righteousness.

10] These treasures are offered us by the Holy Ghost in the promise of the holy Gospel; and faith alone is the only means by which we lay hold upon, accept, and apply, and appropriate them to ourselves. 11] This faith is a gift of God, by which we truly learn to know Christ, our Redeemer, in the Word of the Gospel, and trust in Him, that for the sake of His obedience alone we have the forgiveness of sins by grace, are regarded as godly and righteous by God the father, and are eternally saved. 12] Therefore it is considered and understood to be the same thing when Paul says that we are justified by faith, Rom. 3:28, or that faith is counted to us for righteousness, Rom. 4:5, and when he says that we are made righteous by the obedience of One, Rom. 5:19, or that by the righteousness of One justification of faith came to all men, Rom. 5:18. 13] For faith justifies, not for this cause and reason that it is so good a work and so fair a virtue, but because it lays hold of and accepts the merit of Christ in the promise of the holy Gospel; for this must be applied and appropriated to us by faith, if we are to be justified thereby. 14] Therefore the righteousness which is imputed to faith or to the believer out of pure grace is the obedience, suffering, and resurrection of Christ, since He has made satisfaction for us to the Law, and paid for [expiated] our sins.

16] This righteousness is offered us by the Holy Ghost through the Gospel and in the Sacraments, and is applied, appropriated, and received through faith, whence believers have reconciliation with God, forgiveness of sins, the grace of God, sonship, and heirship of eternal life.

17] Accordingly, the word justify here means to declare righteous and free from sins, and to absolve one from eternal punishment for the sake of Christ's righteousness, which is imputed by God to faith, Phil. 3:9. For this use and understanding of this word is common in the Holy Scriptures of the Old and the New Testament. Prov. 17:15: He that justifieth the wicked, and he that condemneth the just, even they both are abomination to the Lord. Is. 5:23: Woe unto them which justify the wicked for reward, and take away the righteousness of the righteous from him! Rom. 8:33: Who shall lay anything to the charge of God's elect? It is God that justifieth, that is, absolves from sins and acquits.

18] However, since the word regeneratio, regeneration, is sometimes employed for the word iustificatio, justification, it is necessary that this word be properly explained, in order that the renewal which follows justification of faith may not be confounded with the justification of faith, but that they may be properly distinguished from one another. [GJ - This should be remembered in light of people confusing atonement and justification.]

30] In order, therefore, that troubled hearts may have a firm, sure consolation, also, that due honor be given to the merit of Christ and the grace of God, the Scriptures teach that the righteousness of faith before God consists alone in the gracious [gratuitous] reconciliation or the forgiveness of sins, which is presented to us out of pure grace, for the sake of the only merit of the Mediator, Christ, and is received through faith alone in the promise of the Gospel. In like manner, too, in justification before God faith relies neither upon contrition nor upon love or other virtues, but upon Christ alone, and in Him upon His complete obedience by which He has fulfilled the Law for us, which [obedience] is imputed to believers for righteousness.

31] Moreover, neither contrition nor love or any other virtue, but faith alone is the sole means and instrument by which and through which we can receive and accept the grace of God, the merit of Christ, and the forgiveness of sins, which are offered us in the promise of the Gospel.

Apostates Protect Their Own - How Seminex Began at Northwestern College, WELS

Dr. Richard Jungkuntz, WELS, LCMS, ALC

"The chairman of the Theology Department of Concordia Teacher's College of River Forest wrote similarly. That chairman was Dr. Ralph Gehrke, who himself was found guilty of teaching contrary to the Word of God. But that's another story."

"The executive director of the CTCR, Dr. Richard Jungkuntz, urged the board to grant tenure, as did the former President of the Northern Illinois District, Pastor Erwin Paul." (Both quotations, Walter Otten, Steadfast Lutherans)

Two martyrs of the Seminex movement in the LCMS were Ralph Gerke and Richard Jungkuntz.

Both were forced out of Northwestern College, (WELS), Watertown, for their apostate views on the Scriptures.

I was told that Jungkuntz would encourage Gehrke to go out on a limb, then let poor Ralph go it alone. That is typical WELS pastoral behavior. Ralph left first, but look at how well he did soon after. He was chairman of the theology department at Concordia, River Forest, LCMS.

Jungkuntz got away with teaching apostasy at tiny NWC and was discovered only by accident when papers from his class were recycled at Mequon. The substitute professor wanted to know where the students learned all the historical-critical nonsense, and they said "Jungkuntz." That was the beginning of the end for Poor Richard.

Jungkuntz moved from being an embattled college professor, in a tiny college and sect, to being a seminary professor in the LCMS - Springfield. Soon he was chairman of the theology board of the whole synod. When he got into trouble with Jack Preus, a long story by itself, he left for the ALC and became second in command at one of their colleges.

More background to read.

Seminex was more involved than the teaching of two professors from Watertown, but one alumnus told me of NWC alumni meetings where the parking lot was full of cars with Seminex bumper stickers on them. Jungkuntz and Gehrke were icons of the movement, their martyrdom and sainthood frequently mentioned in the tabloid printed by Seminexers. Roger Zehms, divorced Shrinker, now with Mark Jeske Inc, said Jungkuntz was his favorite among all his professors. Zehms almost left for Missouri when the split came.

Jungkuntz and Gehrke taught a generation of WELS/LCMS pastoral students, with their colleagues either comatose or cheering them on. The Boomer apostate church leaders are a testimony to their influence in Missouri and WELS. Both men slid into Missouri and proto-ELCA easily because they shared the doctrine of all mainline apostates - universalism in the form of UOJ - Gospel reductionism. Everyone is forgiven.

Leftists protect their own. That is the takeaway for today. Ski copies down takeaways at his Schwaermer worship rallies, so I wanted to underline one.

Jungkuntz and Gehrke were not stigmatized as troublemakers, apostates, or fired college professors. Instead, they were preached into heaven while still alive, given better jobs each time, and remembered with great fondness - except for the bitterness expressed toward those who extended the Left Foot of Fellowship.

Conservatives surrendered to the Left many decades ago. Now there are too many interlocking dependencies for apostates to be dislodged. The Word could do it, but the Word is not employed. Instead, a new image is marketed to synodical disciples, who have been taught to worship Holy Mother Synod. All is well.

I have searched the vast archives of Ichabod to determine if anything has changed in WELS with a new administration.
  1. FIC became FICKLE but retained the same Shrinker authors.
  2. Shrinker Wayne Mueller was replaced by Shrinker Jim Huebner as First VP.
  3. Paul Calvin Kelm, Leonard Sweet fan, was unemployed for several minutes - until Willowcreek's Little College invented a chaplain's position for him in his dotage.
Bruce Becker, former Perish Services chairman, got hisself a new job with Mark Jeske before anyone could fire him The Guilt Factory (formerly known as The Love Shack).
  4. Mark Jeske joined the LMCS but remained in WELS, while studiously ignoring the ELS convention in favor of celeb appearances with Missouri.
  5. The SORE has served as a visible reminder that WELS pastors need not fear unsafe sects. Only those who object to The SORE are disciplined.

  6. WELS still teaches Enthusiasm, so the rump group organized to oppose The SORE became overnight a cheerleader for the theology of Church and Change.

  7. The last prep standing in WELS, LPS in Watertown, welcomes all the Shrinkers to their campus, where they are hailed as heroes and models to emulate.

  8. MLC and WLC are Fuller franchises, now more than ever before, no less gay than ELCA colleges.

  9. Church and Change continues, unmolested, sprouting new tentacles, as all the activities above indicate.

  10. Nothing has changed for the better, but the SP is hailed as "confessional."

Scandal in ELCA College Is Routine At
Martin Luther College (WELS):
MLC Does Gay and Drag Videos

At MLC we uploaded our gay video to YouTube and did a drag queen video besides.
We are ahead of ELCA on diversity.

Wartburg Annual Drag Queen Contest

Wartburg College in Waverly, Iowa is an ELCA school. On March 20, 2010, they hosted Wartburg College's 5th Annual Drag Show. "The show brings in professional drag queens and kings from around the state of Iowa and also features students, faculty, and staff performers." (see here)

The Drag Show takes place on campus at Neumann Auditorium (see here) and is sponsored by Wartburg Alliance, which describes itself as ". . . a student-run organization that seeks to generate awareness about LGBT issues and advocate for more inclusive environments on campus, locally, and nationally." (see here)

A blogger in attendance during this year’s drag show said the star performer was Serena Michaels, otherwise known as Miss Gay Iowa 2010. (read here)

An ELCA college hosting drag shows for their student body, as well as inviting the attendance of the local community, should not be a surprise. When the parent denomination is rewriting God’s Word and encouraging people to remain in sin, how can one expect the schools they run to uphold Christian values?
