Luther's Sermon about Faith and Love



TWELFTH SUNDAY AFTER TRINITY.


Text. Mark 7:31-37. And again he went out from the borders of Tyre, and came through Sidon unto the sea of Galilee, through the midst of the borders of Decapolis. And they bring unto him one that was deaf, and had an impediment in his speech; and they beseech him to lay his hand upon him. And he took him aside from the multitude privately, and put his fingers into his ears, and he spat, and touched his tongue; and looking up to heaven, he sighed, and saith unto him, Ephphata, that is, Be opened. And his ears were opened, and the bond or. his tongue was loosed, and he spake plain. And he charged them that they should tell no man: but the more he charged them, so much the more a great deal they published it. And they were beyond measure astonished, saying, He hath done all things well; he maketh even the deaf to hear, and the dumb to speak.

PART 1. THE STORY OR EXAMPLE ITSELF.

2. First, the story or example before us is good in itself, for here we see that many persons received the poor man, as though his distress were their own, bringing him to Jesus to be helped. By this, both faith and love are shown to us. Faith, in that they had heard of the Lord before, that he was kind and compassionate, and helped all those who came to him. For the Word must first have been heard, and must first have entered the human heart, showing us the mercy of God in such a way that we depend upon it.

Therefore the Word of Christ must here also have taught these people this; otherwise, where it does not come, there faith and works are all in vain.

3. And though this gospel lesson, like the preceding one, does not state that they had previously heard the tidings of the Gospel, yet we must nevertheless conclude, and the fact proves it, that they must have previously heard the good tidings and Gospel of Christ the Lord, through which they believed. For that is properly the Gospel which is called good tidings, a good report, not that which is written on paper, but that which is proclaimed in the world and becomes known by the living voice. Thus doubtless they had heard that Christ was kind, friendly, and helpful, willing to aid everybody; this was the beginning of their faith. Thus you must earnestly search the Gospel, and you will always find, that the tidings must first go forth and lead us to God, in order that he may’ lay the first stone; otherwise, all is lost. In the next place, you will learn that because they have clung to the tidings and trusted them for their comfort, they went thither, and hoped to receive of him what they had heard.

4. Now you here observe the nature of faith which grows out of the Word.

For the Word first sets forth to us the mercy and goodness of God; then faith causes us to cleave unto it with a firm confidence, and to obey the Word. For we are now conscious of this in our hearts, and are satisfied; for as soon as we believe, we are already with Christ in this inheritance, and are justified.

5. In the third place, this Gospel lesson describes the works of love in this, that these people go and care for the poor man, just as Christ, without their merit, and without their doing, sends forth his Word, and spreads abroad his goodness and mercy. Thus as they have :laid hold and drank from the fountain, they again flow forth freely, and also impart themselves to their neighbor freely and without any merit. Thus love should do its work, not as though it needs it, but devotes itself solely to the benefit of its neighbor, as Paul, among other things, speaks to the Corinthians about love, Corinthians 13:5: “Love seeketh not its own”; and to the Philippians he says, Philippians 2:4: “Not looking each of you to his own things, but each of you also to the things of others.”

6. This we may also learn here in these good people. They do not need this work themselves, nor do they look to themselves, but to the poor man, and think how they may help him; they seek no reward, but act independently and freely. Thus you should by right do likewise; if not, you are no Christians. Therefore consider carefully how love is here described, that it takes upon itself the care of others. If we accept this lesson, it will be well for us; but if not, then God will punish us with blindness, as he has been doing, to our grief, for nearly four hundred years. This much we say briefly concerning faith and love. Furthermore, we must now, in the fourth place, treat of the faith of other persons.

7. You know the fundamental truth is, that man cannot be just and acceptable before God, save alone by faith. So that they have lied and spoken falsely who have taught heretofore that we may deal with God through our works. Moreover it was much more foolish that they taught us to rely upon the works and faith of other persons, pretending that nuns, monks and priests can help other persons by their wailing which they perform in their cloisters at night, and that in this manner they can help other people and distribute their treasures. Therefore, let everyone here remember, that no one dare undertake to be saved by the faith, or by the work of another person; in truth, it cannot be done by the faith or work of Mary, or of any saint, yea, not even by Christ’s work and faith, but through your own personal faith. For God will not permit Mary, or any other saint, not even Christ himself, to take your place, in order that you might be godly and righteous, unless you believe for your own self. If Christ’s faith and work will not do it, you will much less accomplish it by the work or faith of all the monks and priests. Hence our Gospel lesson gives us an occasion to speak of the faith of others.

For here we read that they led this person to Christ in their own faith and work; the man did nothing toward it, but merely suffered it to be done.

8. Therefore let everybody mark well, that he can never be saved through another person’s faith. But it of course may happen, that by the faith of other persons you may be brought to a faith of your own. Likewise the good works of other persons may be of service to me to obtain works of my own. Therefore those lie, who declare that we may be saved through the works or faith of other persons, whether we ourselves believe or not.

No, this is not so! Unless you yourself draw out from God’s kindness and mercy a faith of your own, you will not be saved. Thus it must be; otherwise no other person’s faith or works avail, not even Christ, though he is the Savior of all the world; his kindness, his help will do you no good whatever, unless you believe in it, and are enlightened by it.

9. Therefore, by all means beware of the preachers whom you have often heard among the monks, who approach a dying person and say: “Behold, my brave fellow, do not despair; if you have committed sins, be sorry for them; but in order that you may fare so much the better, I will make you a present of my righteous life and my good works.” If now, the dying person accept such a gift, he is as much a fool as the other, and with all these works, he ‘will go to the devil. Therefore, beware of such consolation, and say: If you are willing to serve me with your good works, approach God and speak thus: O heavenly Father, by thy grace I am now believing; therefore, I pray thee, my God, give also unto this poor man a faith of his own. This might help me; but that you would give me your own faith, this you cannot do, neither would it help me. You will have enough to do to be saved by your own faith.

10. This you may see in the case of the foolish virgins, who, when their lamps went out, said unto the wise virgins: “Give us of your oil; for our lamps are going out.” Then did the wise ones answer and say: “Peradventure there will not be enough for us and you.” Matthew 25:8-9. In that case I am in need even of more faith for myself; how then could I share it with another? For my own faith must stand before God’s judgment, and must fight so hard and cleave so firmly to God’s mercy, that the sweat will run down its face, if it is to prevail. That is the true meaning of St. Peter’s words, 1 Peter 4-18: “The righteous is scarcely saved, where then shall the ungodly appear?” For when death makes its onslaught, then such fear and agony will seize him, that he can scarcely with all his strength, stand for himself and be kept in faith. Hence it is greatly to be deplored that they have established so much deception, putting monks’ cowls upon the dead, and inventing other foolish things, by which they led poor souls straightway to perdition. Beware of them.

11. Now this I say, that you may know how far the faith of others may be of use to us, and how your own faith can help you. Other people’s merits will help you to attain a merit of your own, and nothing more. And though all the angels, yea, the mercy of God itself, were ready to stand for you, it would avail you nothing, unless you cleave unto it with a faith of your own. But it may effect this, that it will assist you to obtain a faith of your own, which will help you. Furthermore, even if Christ did die for us, and pledged and gave his body and life, blood and flesh for us, and became our advocate; yet it would avail nothing, unless we believe in him. But he can assist us in this way, that he appears before the Father and says: “O Father, this have I done for mankind; do thou give them faith, in order that they may enjoy it.” This then, will help us, if we feel assured that his works and merit are our own. In the same manner one should also speak of the other saints, that no saint’s intercession and merit avail unless we ourselves believe. You observe this also in our lesson. There lies the poor man, unable either to speak or to hear. They who bring him to the Lord can speak and hear. But they cannot make him speak by their hearing and speaking, and even though they all had come near him and said: “We will speak and hear for you”; yet he would, in spite of this, have remained speechless and deaf continually, and would never have been able to speak.

12. Likewise, if I were to give you a written declaration saying: “Go forth, this is my work; this shall be yours”; yet it will not help you a whit, but it will carry you into hell. In what way, then, will it help you? If I do, as these men do, who come to Christ and say: “O Lord, help this poor man, that he may receive his speech?’ They do not say: “We will hear and speak in your stead,” but they pray that Christ himself would give him speech. Likewise, if you take my part, and use your faith in such a way that it may help me to a faith of my own, this might help me; thus! thus it must be! God be thanked! Otherwise, no work nor any brotherhood, will avail.

13. Therefore say: I must neither rely upon your works nor you upon mine; but I will, by my own faith, pray God to give you a faith of your own. This is what is said, that we all are priests and kings, that we, like Christ himself, may intercede for one another before God, praying for personal faith. Thus, if I happen to notice that you have no faith of your own, or a weak faith, I go and ask God to help, you to obtain faith, not by giving you my faith and my works, but your own faith and your own works; so that Christ may give him all his works and salvation through faith, as he hath given them to us by faith.

14. That is the meaning of the saying of Christ, John 16:26-27: “I say not unto you that I will pray the Father for you; for the Father himself loveth you, because ye have loved me, and have believed that I came forth from the Father.” This is a beautiful addition, as though he would say: I have prayed for you, and have entreated God that he would give you what is mine. Therefore know my name. For through my prayer he has accepted you and has given you faith, so that henceforth you may pray for yourselves, and I need not do it; provided that you do it in my name. Here he has crowned us, dedicated and anointed us with the Holy Spirit, so that we all are priests in Christ, and may exercise the priest’s office, go before God and pray for one another. This is what St. Peter means in writing thus in his First Epistle, 1 Peter 2:9-10: “Ye are an elect race, a royal priesthood, a holy nation, a people for God’s own possession, that ye may shew forth the excellencies of him who called you out of darkness into his marvelous light, which in time past were no people, but now are the people of God; which had not obtained mercy, but now have obtained mercy.”

15. Hence we may all say: Christ was my priest, who prayed for me and purchased faith and the Spirit for me; therefore I am also a priest, and must go on praying in the world, that God may give faith also to this and that person. So we conclude, that we shall obtain whatever we earnestly pray for in the true faith, as the Lord says, John 16:24: “Ask, and ye shall receive.”

16. But to pray powerfully is not within our strength; for the Spirit does not always vouchsafe to us to pray with power. Paul prayed that all Israel might be saved, Romans 9:1f; why did it not come to pass? The difference lies in the faith, for the Spirit did not give it to him; had he been able to add this faith, it would surely have come to pass. For if Paul had said, “I pray for all Israel,” and had believed and said: “Lord, I am certain that thou wilt do it,” then it would certainly have come to pass. But though he often prayed for them from his heart, the Spirit did not vouchsafe, to him that he should confidently believe it. Therefore it is not within our power to pray in strong confidence; the Holy Spirit does it. Whenever we pray for anyone and are able to add, “It will be done,” then it will certainly be done; but whenever we pray, we must add, “Thy will be done.” If, then, I must let it go according to his will, I cannot suggest to him either the person, or the time, or the manner, but must freely leave it all to him; then, indeed, I am sure of it. In this manner Christ acted also, who himself prayed thus: “O my Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass away from me,” but at once added: “Nevertheless not as I will, but as thou wilt.” Matthew 26:39.

17. Therefore, when I am to pray for an entire city or community, I ought to say: “O Father, I pray for all of them.” Nevertheless, however, I must give honor to his name or will, and say: “Dear Father, I pray for these; I know it is thy will, that I should pray, that I should not despise prayer; but thy will shall be done always; for I might ask something for some one who is not worthy of it before thee; or again, I might possibly east aside some one who is worthy; therefore do thou act according to thy divine will, for thou wilt certainly do better than I could ever conceive.” Thus you see that we cannot always add these words: It will be so. But if we are certain in our hearts that we may add: “It will be certainly so,” then it will come to pass.

18. This we see in our text. These people approach the Lord in strong confidence, praying for the poor man, and their prayer is also heard. In the same manner, when baptism is performed we see this take place in the children’s faith. There are the infants, bare and naked in body and soul, having neither faith nor works. Then the Christian Church comes forward and prays, that God would pour faith into the child; not that our faith should help the child, but that it may obtain a faith of its own. If it has faith, then after that whatever it does is well done, whether it suckle its mother’s breast, or whether it soil itself, or whatever it may please to do. But if it does not obtain faith, our faith is of no value to the child.

19. Therefore my faith can help you in no way except that it may assist you to obtain a faith of your own. Hence, to sum up all, everything depends upon personal faith, as strong as it is, so much does it need the faith and prayer of other people in order to increase in strength. Now you can easily judge, that those people were the greatest fools, who held masses and vigils with the brotherhoods; for the wise virgins have sufficient oil only for themselves, and scarcely have enough. This is a simple explanation of the story of the Gospel lesson. Now let us briefly consider the meaning which our Lord puts into it.

PART 2. THE SPIRITUAL MEANING.

20. The people bring the poor man to the Lord, the Lord takes him to a special place, lays his fingers into the man’s ears, spits, and touches his tongue with the spittle, looks up toward heaven, and sighing, says, Ephphata, that is, Be opened! This is a lovely picture, and its meaning is good. For by those who here bring the deafmute to the Lord, the office of the ministry is meant. Ministers and the Apostles lead the poor consciences of men to God. This is done in three ways, by preaching, by a godly life, and by intercession. With the Word and preaching, they are brought to God; a godly life serves to show the Word so much the mightier in its power. But the Word itself leads to Christ, though it be preached by a sinner. Yet, a good life serves as an emphasis and a furtherance of the Gospel; while a wicked life dulls its edge. Their third duty, to pray for the people, likewise leads them on the road both to faith and to works.

21. Now if the Word go on its way in this threefold manner, it cannot fail to bring forth fruit, as God says, Isaiah 55:11: “My Word, that goeth forth out of my mouth, shall not return to me void.” This is indicated by the action of the pious persons who carry the mute into Christ’s presence; this signifies the ministers, who bring forward the sinner; then God appears, giving growth and increase, as Paul says, 1 Corinthians 3:7, He opens the sinner’s eyes, ears, and mouth. This happens in a wink of the eye, for God’s Word is like lightning, which in a moment passes from sunrise to the ends of the earth. Thus when such persons are brought to God, he gives them grace to believe.

22. This is signified by the act of laying his fingers into the man’s ears; through the Word he breathes the Holy Spirit into him, making the heart believing, decent, chaste, and holy; for the finger signifies the Holy Spirit.

23. Again, the spittle that is laid on the man’s tongue, typifies the Word of God; this is put into his mouth in order that he may be able to speak it. And this spittle, the Word of God, is a noble thing, but very bitter to the Old Adam.

24. Then they praise God, saying: “He hath done all things well, he has made the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak.” For wherever there is true faith, there the Spirit will not allow you any rest; you will break forth, become a priest, teach other people also, as we read  Psalm 116:10: “I believe, for I will speak.” There the heart is full, and the mouth must run over. Then when they are persecuted, they will not care.

25. But the part of the story, that Christ took the man apart from the others, looks up to heaven, has this meaning: If God do not take me alone to a separate place, and give me the Holy Spirit, so that I cling to the Word which I have heard, then all preaching is in vain. But why does this require so much that he looks up to heaven and makes use of divine power, calling upon God’s grace to come and to act? By this he teaches us that such power must come from heaven, working in the heart of man by divine strength; then help comes to him. Again the spittle which is the Word of God is a noble thing for the Old Adam. Then they go forth to praise and glorify God.

26. Thus have you learned, from the story and from its spiritual or secret meaning, that we must first hear the Word of God and thus, through the intercession of Christ, obtain a faith of our own, and then we come out, confessing this and praising God forever. May this be sufficient on this Gospel lesson. Let us pray to God for grace.

Aftermath of the Nominating Conventions



I have watched political conventions back to 1960 and remember the Eisenhower years with some difficulty.

Each party can legally nominate anyone they want for the presidential slot. One researcher has shown that the primaries winner is the one who will become president.

The GOP convention and campaign have been the most expressive about the Christian Faith in my lifetime. As I wrote before, the denominations were largely comatose during the Wuhan Flu. However, the brazen promotion of violence and destruction has a way of awakening individuals. We know it is not something to answer in public surveys, but it is certainly discussed in private.

When the criminals and traitors are rounded up in one sweep, things will move beyond normal to another way of living. The Wuhan Flu will disappear on election day, along with a host of other pearl-clutching crises.

Con Swervatives - The Game Plan

The Con
WELS makes a game out of lying, which makes Mark and Avoid Jeske the ideal prop for inter-Lutheran fellowship. The game begins with Wisconsin Lutheran Seminary's GA, their abusive initiation rite, perhaps called HB now, but the same malarkey. Tough guys play sympathetic guides. The opposite side plays tough. Due to their constant emphasis on brainless conformity, the Mordor personality is easy to spot. Mordor graduates delight in lying and winking at their friends. "Oh, we drink work so hard at Mequon, boozing studying constantly!" Wink. And it starts in college, the initiation and the studying. Some future pastors study so hard they can barely walk back to the dorm.

First of all, the major players (ELCA-WELS-ELS-CLC sic) are con artists all. "No!" shrieks one of the conswervatives, "Liz Eaton was a radical from the start!" Not so fast - I carefully read her reaction, as a district bishop, to the 2009 convention vote. It was more like this - "Nothing has changed. Nobody has to change, and there will be no punishment of those who disagree with the vote for gay ordination and marriage. So just take a deep breath and relax." So condescending - and a gigantic con job. Liz became the ELCA Presiding Bishop and no prisoners were taken from that point on.



The 2009 vote decimated ELCA - or did it? Never neglect the money side of the con job. Every closed parish, every divided parish, every tiny breakaway - they had one thing in common - leaving the money and property behind for the radicals to enjoy and spend as they wish. I doubt whether any tears fell on Eaton's Excel spread-sheets.

Missouri and the Little Sect on the Prairie are just as persistent in the con-job as WELS. Missouri teaches a history about itself that never happened. The Little Sect pretends purer than WELS while obeying all orders from Milwaukee.


 It keeps changing, so Jeske keeps selling his solutions.


The Swerve to the Left
Each sect runs its own confidence game, but they have one thing is common - swerve to the Left!

Whatever ELCA is devouring, WELS-ELS-LCMS-CLC are tasting. Yes, they aim the stink-eye at ELCA in conversation. But they are always inching - if not trotting - in same direction. They all have their trotters in the trough of Thrivent, so they are snout-to-snout with the ELCA clergy who wrecked whatever was left of their merger after 22 years of rank apostasy (1987-2009).



The teeny synods have already adopted women's ordination in practice, enjoying small doses at Jeske carnivals and at their own official gatherings. Gay marriage may be over the top right now, but gay ordination has never been scorned. The players may be moved around a bit, but they know how to network. The opponents of these trends form a circle and start shooting, every change they get. Foxes and weather-vanes make it to the top, claiming, "I have to quiet now, but later I will fix everything if you make me synod president. But for now I must be allowed to infiltrate the inner circles."

How Close Was Hurricane Laura to Us? 8-27-2020



Yesterday felt like the storm was going to break on us, with eerie quiet, high humidity temperatures.

The radar from last night shows how Laura turned and headed East. No rain fell.

 There is no substitute for rain, when growing roses.

"We Ran Out of Catholics" - Mark Jeske

Wisconsin Lutheran College invited predator Archbishop Weakland to give public lectures at their college, assisted by priests he knew. WELS lied about it and said it was a "private luncheon."
Mark and Avoid Jeske will substitute for Roman Catholic Vice-President Mike Pence at the commencement of the college.

Jeske's address will be, "We Ran Out of Catholics." He is ideal as an emergency substitute, because no one really knows what he believes.

 "We ran out of Catholics," Jeske explained to a group of MLC students trying desperately to stay awake.

This book is a re-issue of a classic work that was published in 1897. It was produced by individuals who opposed the erroneous doctrines introduced by CFW Walther, who was the founder and chief theologian of the Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) on justification and election. The tone of this book is somewhat polemic.

The book consists of 3 sections, each of which can be read as a stand-alone document:

Part 1 provides a historical background to the predestination controversy that arose in the LCMS in the last quarter of the 19th century
Part 2 is titled “Intuitu Fidei” (in view of faith). The authors provide excerpts from the writings of Lutheran theologians from the 16th and 17th centuries to document the traditional Lutheran doctrine of justification and election which Walther's new doctrines contradicted.

Part 3 is titled “The Blue Island Theses”. This is a statement of 5 principles of traditional Lutheran doctrine on justification and election published in 1881 by theologians who left the LCMS in protest to Walther's new doctrines.

If you are a member of the LCMS or the Wisconsin Synod (which adopted Walther's doctrines in this matter), then you need to read this book. You will see how the peculiar LCMS doctrine of justification without regard to faith (known as Universal Objective Justification or UOJ) came to be. If you've heard your Pastor or some synod official talk about UOJ and you always wanted to refute their claims that UOJ is 'real Lutheran doctrine', and how 'Walther got it right and everyone else got it wrong', this book has all the information you need. It lays out the Biblical doctrine of justification and provides quotes from the writings of Martin Luther and the Lutheran theologians in the 16th and 17th centuries, documenting what the real Lutheran doctrine is.

This book also describes the tactics that Walther used to smear and discredit the people inside the LCMS and in other Lutheran groups who opposed his doctrines. In fairness, we should take the authors' descriptions of Walther's behavior with a grain of salt, since they were his opponents and they ended up on the losing side of the controversy.

The Earthworm and Hurricane Laura


I had a large plastic barrel in the backyard, where the bushes held it captive for at least a year. It could be useful somewhere else, so I pulled it into the sunlight, bagged the paper trash, and looked inside. The remains of some gardening work was at the bottom. The sun was overhead, so I saw large earthworm moving and glistening in the sunlight, as if it had the most peaceful place on the planet to rest and grow.

I set him free by turning the barrel upside-down. An earthworm in sunlight will burrow down at once, using its bristles like tank treads and opening a path through the soil with its mouth.



Hurricane Laura will pass through Arkansas soon, taking an eastward turn at some point. The edge on radar is at Ft. Smith, 100 miles south of us. Big storms leave the NW corner of Arkansas alone or offer up only a tiny sample of the damage caused. How else would you get your Tyson chickens and EDLP (every day low prices)?

Hurricanes always cause fear, evacuations, and months of repair afterwards. Earthworms do not, but they bury civilization by building up soil relentlessly. They can even change a forest. If earthworms enter an evergreen forest via the boots of fishermen and hunters, the steady calcifying work and their reproduction will change the soil and make it less acid, less pine-friendly.

Christians are the earthworms, literally called New Creations from the Gospel Word converting them to believers in Christ. God does this work through the powerful Word of preaching and the Sacraments - the visible Word.

2 Corinthians 5:17 Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature [ktisis - creation] : old things [archaic things] are passed away; behold, all things are become new.

The thieves and liars from Fuller Seminary promise multitudes of Happy Campers if their products are bought and used. They are more like hurricanes for a few days, noisy and destructive, with repairs necessary for a long time afterwards.

 This all works together by design, in spite of our mistakes, but this web is even more productive by understanding Creation.

Some time ago you wrote in your blog about the book "Errors of Modern Missouri", which had just been re-printed by the Lutheran Librarian.  

I bought the book and finally finished reading it. I found it to be a very effective exposition and defense of the traditional Lutheran doctrines of election and justification, against the doctrines of CFW Walther.

The book also gave me an insight into how UOJ came about: Walther removed faith as a instrument of justification, and replaced it with the idea that everyone is justified by the death of Christ, without regard to faith. One then became saved when he 'accepted' his already justified status.

For when we are baptized, when we eat the Lord’s body, when we are absolved, they ought certainly to assure us that God truly forgives us for Christ’s sake. And God at the same time, by Word and by rites, moves hearts to believe and conceive faith, just as St. Paul says, ‘Faith cometh by hearing.’ Rom. 10:17. But just as the Word enters the ears, in order to strike hearts, so the rite itself meets the eyes, in order to move hearts.  Loy's Church in Delaware, Ohio, north of Columbus, is in the paws of ELCA. Rev. Kenneth DeWalt, a student of Lenski, served the congregation for 30 years. After that, a series of interim pastors followed. Another hymn-writer besides Loy, Emmanuel Cronenwett, also served St. Marks.

But to be… marks of profession among men is not the chief end of the Sacraments. Therefore those who teach that this is their only purpose are grievously in error.
The truth which the Scriptures teach and the Church of the Reformation confesses is so distasteful to many that, in their endeavor to escape it, they can think of no better purpose for which the holy Sacraments were ordained than that of being marks of recognition as Christians. All the power and grace of these divine institutions is thus denied, and the holy Sacraments with their potency and mystery and heavenly comfort are reduced to mere labels by which the observer may know who wants to be regarded as a Christian and who does not.

Is Life Today One Big LARP?

 "Theology is the grammar of Faith," as Paul L. Holmer wrote. Synodical grammar is atrocious today.


LARP stands for Live Action Role Playing. The term is often used today. The idea is that paid members of an event create a false impression by the way they act during and after an event. The LARP becomes a factual news item and part of history.

For example, the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor was real, but the "surprise" part was not. Republicans in Congress held an investigation. Most people will say today that we had no idea that a giant, noisy convoy of ships steamed across the Pacific, using ship-to-ship radio, and remained undetected. Books have written about what we knew then and who was kept in the dark, such as the Pearl Harbor commanders.

There are alternate narratives to many major events in history, especially in the last century. I enjoy reading about them and considering which versions are the most credible. America is not strong on knowing or retaining history facts. I can picture a nation-wide poll on Waterloo coming up with "a famous song by Abba," not the date (1815) and the main characters (Napoleon, Wellington)
involved.

QED, the Wuhan Flu is real, but the response has been a LARP, especially the legendary and imaginary "second wave," a clever way to sell face-diapers in many imaginative designs.

 The ushers, greeters, and ministers must smile, and be Golden Retrievers, not guard dogs of the Faith.


The Denominations and Synods - One Giant LARP
I read that Mrs. Jerry Falwell Junior was quick to rebuke anyone (via her contacts) who suggested Liberty University was less than perfect. I thought, "Yes, just like like WELS, Missouri, ELCA, the CLC (sic) and the rest." Criminals are absolved and promoted. Those who question Holy Mother Synod President Hategood are beaten like rented mules - their first and last warning.

The Hategoods are simply the fruit of the 150 year old LARP. They should be pitied, because the evil tree will always produced corrupt fruit. When the current crop is finished producing unbelievers, new examples of the same syndrome will replace them.

The Calvinists first - as Congregationalists - became Unitarians at the academic and clergy level. The real truths were limited to the Brotherhood of Man and the Fatherhood of God. I saw that in New Haven, when a church group (Congregationalist in origin) was horrified that I agreed with the articles of faith in the Apostles Creed. Yale Divinity School (Congregationalist in origin) swore that no more Lutherans would be hired to teach there - those professors were too conservative.

The Methodists and Episcopalians joined the parade to perdition. The first steps were Social Gospel activism, aided and abetted by "Biblical scholarship" that treated the Scriptures as one more interesting book, entirely human in all respects. Sometimes the Social Gospel activists were discovered to place all their trust in Marxism...oh no! Everyone got used to the Marxists pushing their agenda at all levels. Lutherans were always "a day late and a dollar short," as Stanley Hauerwas liked to say in his ethics classes.

Lutheran embraced and militarized the same goals as the mainline denomiations, first on the left side (ALC, LCA) then on the right side (WELS-ELS-LCMS):

  1. The KJV is spoiled by relying on a bad, old, unscientific text.
  2. Our genius generation knows how to promote a new, scientific Greek text of the New Testament.
  3. The Bible is just a book about religion.
  4. Jesus died on the cross to free us from lack of success, poor time management, and neglect of socialism.

Not entirely, but for the most part -

  • Lutheran worship is gone.
  • The Creeds and Confessions are "boring and irrelevant" as one WELS leader said.
  • Any old Bible will do since we learn so much from 57 varieties of each verse.
  • Lying, deceit, and slander are the modus operandi in all the synods, serving their Father Below.

Do Not Laugh



I told someone I was facing a complicated paperwork issue, mostly burning up frustrating time on the phone. Today I went to the files and began. Fortunately I had gathered them before and put them in one drawer, but unfortunately some necessary items seemed to be missing.

I went through each manila envelope. Everything fell into place. My outline for how to complete this project had all green check-marks. I can finish in one morning! Time to write again.

Books
Walther the American Calvin: Building a Synod on Felonies is the next book to write.

On the Biblical text and translations - something like Broken Biblical Foundations, Corrupt Translations. I am having a great time reading again the basic books and articles on this topic. The issue is the greatest head-fake in Christian history - the vast majority using a faked text from apostates and miserably bad paraphrases sold as translations.

The result? - no inerrancy and no Justification by Faith. The NIV celebrates with the lupine Lutherans the sudden emergence (from nowhere) of Universal Objective Justification.

 Our translating team is hard at work.

Creation Garden Point Two - Weed Whackers Arrive

Look at the Buckwheat farm growing around the Crepe Myrtle. I overdid the sowing.

'Twas a Springdale day. I took The Sass for a morning walk. She dislikes being brushed, so I finger brush her outside, usually sitting on a curb. She enjoys that and we see fur flying in little bunny clumps, perhaps the lining of a bird's nest in the near future. When we were getting up, an SUV was driving slowly toward us on Scott, which is a quiet street at 7 AM. The driver stopped and rolled down his window, "Are you OK?" Strangers are friendly and helpful in this area. On two separate occasions I was told to wait until they had the Town Car running. "You are NOT calling AAA!"

Later that day, Ranger Bob announced he would weed-whack the Rose Garden if I had plastic collars to protect all the healthy roses. In fact, I had a new box plus almost all the old ones. One ran away during a wind storm, but I got it back. "No more of that!"

So yesterday I heard the usual knock and went outside. Bob and PFC had finished their selective destruction of the garden. As I wrote before, the heavy rains and sunshine had boosted weed growth to remarkable levels, and the more mature Joe Pyes were 8 feet tall.  But I had clipped most of the JPs at the soil level, so Bob and PFC had a relatively conflict-free area to cut down. It was done! All they wanted was cold water, hot coffee, and damp towels.

Sassy looked at me, triggered. She always gets a Milk Bone when Bob comes, so she had her bone and then set up her defense perimeter to keep us safe during the coffee hour outside.

 I like giant Aliums (garlic) but most bulbs do not thrive here. Tulips are a disaster.


Creation Garden Point Two
I have tried out many plants in the Creation Garden, which means our rabbits are the healthiest and most fertile in NW Arkansas. They have no toxins in their food and enjoy a wide variety of tender new plants, which I usually never see again.

They ate three Clethra shrubs over the winter. The magical tree, exuding sweetness and cinnamon, probably tastes as good as it smells. Cutting back the Pyes released the shrubs to the breezes that lift the fragrance across the yard and driveway.

 Butterfly Bush does not do as well as Crepe Myrtle here. 


Summing up what can be handled, I decided that the garden is really vertical and can be weeded only by machine. That means:

  • Roses
  • Daisies
  • Bee Balm
  • Clethra
  • Crepe Myrtle
  • Joe Pye
  • Hostas with their stalks of trumpet flowers for the Hummingbirds.
Except for roses, these are bully plants that protect and expand their territory by growth at the base and in their height.

We will put in an ocean of Daffodils in the fall. They will grow up in drifts and in spots between plants, but they will finish their cycle before the rest get going. Staying below, they will repeat this for a long time. Animals do not like them (yay!). Squirrels do not dig them up for storage elsewhere (double yay!). Daffodils are beautiful solo and in large drifts.

New Testament Passages - Apostasy Predicted


1 Timothy 4 4 Now the Spirit speaketh expressly, that in the latter times some shall depart from the faith, giving heed to seducing spirits, and doctrines of devils;

2 Speaking lies in hypocrisy; having their conscience seared with a hot iron;

3 Forbidding to marry, and commanding to abstain from meats, which God hath created to be received with thanksgiving of them which believe and know the truth.

 Almost 100 years ago, Charlotte Kirschbaum and Karl Barth invented the Church Dogmatics that later influenced Fuller Seminary away from any concept of inerrancy, let alone the Chief Article. Nobody knew Charlotte and Karl were adulterers! OK, we knew 45 years ago (at least) from the former president of the Barth society, Frank Fiorenza, now at Harvard. Communists both? - that book has been out for years, see below. But thanks be to God, there is no Church Growth in WELS, as Wayne Mueller solemnly declared. And Missouri only uses a carefully filtered, curated ideas, not one a danger to Holy Mother Synod.
 The author is head of the Barth Shrine at Princeton. I met him and his first wife at Yale.


GJ - Departing from the faith is the most important aspect of our current crisis. The most blatant falsehoods are sold for a profit by the church printing publishing houses (NIV, ESV, etc) and Barth-Kirschbaum's Church Dogmatics, conceived in sin and dedicated to Marxism.

Apostasy can only come from those who were formerly believers. They are far more destructive than outright atheists, because they burrow and corrupt from within, using the language of Christianity but changing its meaning. Thus Barth and Kirschbaum (Du bist zo schoene, mein schnutzi putzi) have the Bible containing the Word of God but not actually the Word of God.

Veering from God's will that men and women marry, the early Medieval Church extolled non-marriage as a requirement for pastors and for the separated women whose groom could only be Jesus. This rebellion against Creation made it easier to corrupt the Gospel and build power for the Bachelor-in-Chief. Now the WELS college makes sure they keep their government loan money by not opposing the rainbow coalition and gender switches.

GJ - Anyone who raises the slightest concern about the worsening crisis will be thanked by losing friends, getting the stink-eye, and being extended the Left Foot of Fellowship. The denominational Threat and Slander Machine will simultaneously cry, "They are ruining us" and "They are slandering us!" Church leaders are very religious - they say, "God have mercy on you, because we won't."

In Lutherdom, the incompetence and shallowness push everyone further into the darkness. Matt the Fatt could not get through a seminary PhD program, the easiest and least challenging. Mirthless Mark Schroeder is the victim of an inbred system where the graduates of his abuse seminary in Mordor become the professors of the next generation, preserving the cultic GA rites and alcoholic abuse and mattress room. Pope John the Malefactor has a very special education - not even a bachelor's degree when hired as a seminary New Testament professor. Only then did he finish a degree, because his students were more advanced than he was.

9 Even him, whose coming is after the working of Satan with all power and signs and lying wonders,

10 And with all deceivableness of unrighteousness in them that perish; because they received not the love of the truth, that they might be saved.
