Short Answer for Official WELS and LCMS - The Leaders Are Calvinists, Not Lutherans

Someone asked me about a history of American Lutherans, and I am working on it in those quiet moments of waiting for the doctor, the pharmacist, and the test results.

The singular issue is the influence of Calvinism, directly through the union movement to unite Lutheran and Calvinist congregations - American Lutheranism.

The secondary influence has been more insidious - the crafts and assaults of Pietism, which is really a Calvinist attempt to undermine and replace Reformation Lutheran doctrine.

A concerted, organized and successful effort has been made to replace Lutheran doctrine and worship in America.

  1. Look around and observe the utter lack of faithful Bibles with a reliable text.
  2. Search for traditional Lutheran worship centered on the Means of Grace.
  3. Listen for references to the truly gifted leaders of the Reformation in Germany and the Concordist era afterwards.
