Growing up in Moline, Illinois meant going to the park in his honor. They named the junior college after him, streets as well.
I often heard the name Sauk after his tribe, which expanded toward the Northwest and Minnesota.
That is where I found Sauk Rapids on the map of Minnesota, close to St. Cloud - a larger and better known city.
Sauk Rapids has around16,000 for its population. St. Cloud is more like 70,000.
Sauk Rapids is two hours north of Sleepy Eye, Minnesota - which is West of New Ulm (where Christina and I lived) - further East is - Mankato.
