Guerilla Lutheran Asks about Providence

"I thought you said Gorilla Lutheran."

Do you think that when President Obama said that our grandchildren would remember that "this was the moment when the rise of the oceans began to slow and our planet began to heal" he tempted God too much?

Poetic justice certainly seems to be in play with the recent weather and I'm wondering if you'd parse out this theological question:

The Lutheran position is that God only deals with individuals through the Means of Grace. But does God affect history via means beyond the Sacraments and the Word? (Weather, war, etc.) Plenty of Kings, and storms for that matter, not knowing the Word or the sacraments have affected human history, and in many cases, the acts of these Kings have had spiritual consequences. So does God provide for some manner of fate or chance, by which the structure of the world is ordered? Or are some kings (or storms), apart from the Means of Grace, controlled or influenced by God as mere actors on the grand stage? When we say that God only deals with man through the Word and Sacrament, is that Justification-specific, or are we talking about a larger scope?

Martin Luther was apparently trapped under a lightning-struck tree, and promised God to become a monk; the result of this event led him directly into the Word, and the Holy Spirit led him to discover the truth of Justification by Faith alone (but NOT to a Universal Objective Justification…). I can see how one might say that God caused the storm, and that God caused Luther to be there, under the tree that gave its life (so the story goes) for Lutheranism. So how is the storm and the electricity and the tree NOT as much of God’s work as the Word in Luther’s ultimate conversion?

Believe me when I say that I am not doubting the pure Efficaciousness of the Word-that-is-God, but how ought one approach and understand the holistic nature that is God-in-the-cosmos? I suppose I am questioning what seems to be the western tradition of isolating theology from human existence…

GJ - Yes, Obama was displaying his divine self-image. He suffers from narcissism. The majority wanted easy slogans instead of proven leadership.

God certainly acts through history. He uses evil people to chasten an apostate people. He gives grace only through the Means of Grace, but His Hand controls all human events.

Pat Robertson got a big specific when he prayed a hurricane away from his location and rejoiced that it turned and spared his campus and headquarters. That was some years ago.

Luther was a genius who was incredibly productive in his work but also faithful to God's Word. It was providential that Gutenberg turned a wine press into a printing press at that time.

It was providential that the Muslim armies threatened Europe and drew Charles V away from the Reformation for many years.

What I have hitherto and constantly taught concerning this I know not how to change in the least, namely, that by faith, as St. Peter says, we acquire a new and clean heart, and God will and does account us entirely righteous and holy for the sake of Christ, our Mediator. And although sin in the flesh has not yet been altogether removed or become dead, yet He will not  punish or  remember it. And such faith, renewal, and forgiveness of sins is followed by good works.
Luther, Smalcald Articles, III, VIII, 1-2.

Monthly Page Views Already Top Last Year's Record -
Without a Felony Arrest

Last year, the felony arrest of Joel Hochmuth sent page-views through the roof, so WELS could not cover up their scandal. Pretending otherwise is difficult when the FBI comes knocking at the Love Shack and walks away with a few computers and thumb drives.

This year, the page-views top the record, and there are three more days to go.

Thank you - school and synod officials, bloggers, and plagiarists - for the constant efforts to motivate people to read a banned blog.

Students laugh at MLC teachers when the entire classroom is told not to read Ichabod.

Students tell me the Party in the MLC video made the whole campus aware of Ichabod. The WELS KGB will now look for those students!

Stats at 9 AM today. The morning page-reads are now equal to the all-day figures of a few months ago.

Inward Loathing of Luther's Doctrine
Revealed by Outward Actions of Synodical Conference

Someone observed that the Reformation service at Martin Luther College (WELS) was 98% Law. I am only shocked by the 2% Gospel portion, a fairly large showing for a Wisconsin Synod event.

Luther said the sects talk about Jesus all the time, but they tear down the bridge to Jesus - the Means of Grace. Others have noticed that the furious advocacy of Universal Objective Justification ignores the Means of Grace, the efficacy of the Word, and the Holy Spirit always at work in the Word.

No wonder the WELS leaders default to the agenda of Fuller Seminary, Rick Warren, Mark Driscoll, Leonard Sweet, Ed Stetzer, Andy Stanley,  and Brian McLaren. They already have two gay activists among their favorite gurus - Stanley and McLaren.

UOJ unites WELS and LCMS with ELCA. It is so easy to work up materials about grace (without the Means of Grace) and never address the real issues.

The Reformation was a battle in the midst of a Muslim invasion. The war pitted the authority of the Scriptures against the authority of Holy Mother Church. Monopolies are nasty. They know there is no place to go. Holy Father Antichrist could use his own army, or threaten a king with an interdict, to get his way.

Many Lutherans are still in the Middle Ages. They think their own Holy Mother Sect and their own little Antichrist are the only alternatives. But the Word of God can and does gather people in all situations. God will prosper His Word (Isaiah 55) even if that means whipping up a storm for decades, as He did during the Reformation.

Massive bloody persecution drove Europeans across the ocean to find peace and freedom in America. The French Protestants who were not murdered on St. Bartholomew's Day were later driven out of the country or put on slave galleys, the Roman bishops watching with pleasure. One part of my family came from those French Protestants.

England suffered under the idiotic reign of the Stuarts (James I, et al.) who must have inspired No Call Paul and Herman Otten in their advocacy for Rome. My English relatives came over too. The richest man in Scotland loaned money to the king, sued for recovery of the funds, and was ruined by the king.

That encouraged another segment to come to America for a new start, and it was very hard work to get established and prosper when starting with raw land.

People continue to shock me by assuming they are still in the Middle Ages, waiting for permission to think for themselves. Anyone who questions Holy Mother Sect will pay for it - they are a vindictive and unforgiving bunch, addicted to power, seething when they are questioned.

Why make ourselves slaves to the law when we are already freed by the Gospel? The Bible does not say, "Except ye be born in the Milwaukee area, ye shall never see the Kingdom of God."

The synods say, "Trust in us," but the Bible says, "Trust in God."
